Resident Broncos fan, Seaton O'Connor, Marvin the Prince, and Polyester Papps,
as well the backroom guys and yours truly. On this Monday,
we'll talk about Tom Brady's debut. We'll talk about Notre
Dame being Notre Dame. They have one or two of
these games every year where you go, alrighty, why is
(01:35):
Marshall getting staying in this game? Why? Now I'm watching,
you know, the game against Northern Illinois, and I'm going
better pick it up here a little bit, because all
of a sudden, Northern Illinois is like, hey, you know what,
We're staying in this game. We're not in this game.
We're staying in this game. It's just like the Patriots,
the Patriots against the Bengals. I'm watching, I'm going, okay, Bengals,
(01:57):
better pick it up a little bit, and then all
of a sudden, the Patriots we're in it to win it.
Pull question, Seaton, what are we going to start off with?
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Why don't we start with who had the worst weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Get Monday going the right way? All right, all right,
we're going to trend negative here. First hour, So Patriots
beat the Bengals Lions in overtime. Last night, Chargers playing
Jim Harball ball or is it just Jim Harball because
they handled the Raiders there, Vikings look good, Saints look good,
Jayden Daniels goodish Tyreek Hill gets detained and then can't
(02:32):
be detained by the defense when he scores an eighty
yard touchdown and Russell Wilson junior third sits Do we
have a quarterback controversy in Atlanta with the Falcons? Jordan Love,
It's not as bad as we thought. Pokinakua, We're not
sure how bad it is. Texas over Michigan, NIU stuns
(02:54):
Notre Dame, and Nebraska handles Colorado Jets Niners coming up tonight.
Whow crazy weekend? And then Sunday morning. Sunday morning, you're
just kind of going, okay, let me watch the pregame shows.
Justin Field's okay. There were some indications on Friday and
Saturday that he was probably gonna start because Russell Wilson
(03:16):
was not healthy. Then all of a sudden Dak. Prescott
signs his contract going of course he does. Of course,
Jerry Jones does it right before game time. Tom Brady
making his debut in Dak, signs his contract, and then
you see the Tyreek Hill video where when I was
(03:37):
told he was detained, I thought, well, okay, wait a minute,
what does that mean? Detained? And then I realized detained
meant you're on the ground, face first and handcuffs on you.
I would think that most of the security people at
the stadium a home game would have an idea of
what cars players drive, or hey, this is five hours
(04:01):
before the game coming to the stadium, and I guess
reckless driving, I don't know speeding. I'm guessing in his
sports car. But next thing you know, he's on the
ground in handcuffs a home game and then ends up
scoring an eighty r touchdown. What else do you have
their seat? And so who had the worst weekend?
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Yeah, we could actually keep it just to college and
just go with Colorado, Michigan or Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Those are three bad weekends. It's Notre Dame. It's Notre
Dame because I didn't think Colorado was going to win.
Either way, The story should be Nebraska football. It's not
going to be, but it should be, because if I've
said this over and over and over, college football is
about offensive line and defensive line. You can have skilled
(04:49):
position players, as Colorado does, but if you don't have
an offensive line, it doesn't matter. And Nebraska looks like
they have an offensive and defensive line. They got a
good quarterback, and they were the better team and that
place was rocking. So I'm not surprised at that with
Colorado and Nebraska. Notre Dame, I'm shocked because you just
(05:12):
beat Texas, A and M. Your schedule's not difficult. You
have USC at the end of the season. Okay, maybe
you have one loss, but you're going to be in
the playoffs. You can't lose to Northern Illinois. That one
was terrible. Michigan when we had Joel clatt On and
he did the game with Gus Johnson and I'm looking
(05:34):
at that line and it's seven points, and I said,
you know, to Joel clatt is this more about Texas
or more about Michigan. He goes, It's really about both.
I think it was more about Michigan at home a
seven point underdog. They lost a lot of players to
the NFL draft. Texas is a really good team, and
I'd probably say there's maybe five teams that can win
(05:56):
the National Championship maybe, and Texas is certainly one of
those teams. But watching that game, they were far better
than Michigan, and I guess I was surprised because he
was a home game, but they made it look easy.
Nebraska made it look easy, and Northern Illinois just stayed.
We're going to talk to their coach. He's going to
(06:18):
join us next hour, Thomas Hammock, and he's been there
like five years, maybe this is his sixth year, but
he's going to join us coming up. And he was
great after the gang emotional the interview that they had
with him after the upset, So he'll join us a
little later on, we'll talk a little bit more about
Tom Brady's debut. Paul says that there's an issue with
(06:40):
Tom Brady and might not be fixable. Is that am
I quoting you correctly?
Speaker 4 (06:45):
I'm trying to be fair with save it.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Save it, Save it to next segment, Okay, because we
can all give our opinions on Brady. The game with
the Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns and here's the other thing.
Over reaction Monday, But then also what is real? That's
what I try to take away, Like, Okay, it's one game, man,
(07:09):
The Saints look awesome. Is that real? Caroline is bad again?
Is that real? The Raiders? Is that real? The Chargers
their style? Is that real? The Giants? Is that real?
Saquon Barkley? Is that real?
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Like?
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Those are the things that I'm trying to figure out
today because we can overreact, but then there's also the
reality of that's going to be there the rest of
the season. That's not just one game and this is
good and bad? Is Dallas going to be that dominating Philadelphia?
Jordan Love got injured, but there's still going to be
(07:48):
a formidable team. The Lions are a really good team,
sover the Rams. You know, you're just watching, going, okay,
the Bears didn't show me anything. Offensively, they will, but
they didn't. Defensively they did, so you're kind of looking
at it and sorting through and go, okay, do the
(08:10):
Falcons have an issue here? They got offensive weapons, they
couldn't do anything against the Steelers, And then the Steelers
offense wasn't very good. It was just field goals, but
then justin Fields is like you're trying to figure Jacksonville.
Does Jacksonville have a problem already? That's the tricky part.
(08:31):
Like the Titans. You know, Titans did pretty well holding
down the Bears offense, but offensively they didn't look good
at all. So that's the thing I try to take
away from today, like what is real that we saw
that's going to be sustainable? Bo Nicks all right, showed
some promise. I don't think they're a playoff team. I
(08:54):
think Jayden Daniels I said this, he's going to rush
for eight hundred yard. I don't know if that's a
good thing, but he's going to rush for eight hundred
yards this year and you saw that yesterday. But if
I'm Jaden Daniels, I study a little bit of RG three,
and you know the good and the bad because you
(09:14):
start to run, they eventually catch you and then when
they do it hurts. So just sort of watching these
games and trying to figure out is are the Chargers
going to be Michigan? Are they going to play Jim Harball?
And that is justin Herbert's not thrown for three hundred
yards this year. They're going to run the football, defense, defense,
(09:38):
and you know, running the game just like he did,
running the ball just like he did at Michigan. So
those are the things, you know, you're trying to take
away and figure out what is real because we do
overreact all of a sudden, somebody is unbelievable or oh
my god, did they like Cleveland with Deshaun Watson. I
saw an article here and it says Cleveland should pull
(10:03):
the band aid. That's it. They're done with Deshaun Watson.
Like and you know this is described as knee jerk reactions,
but it's you know, you got an issue here. It
says the Browns need to pull the plug on Deshaun
Watson experiment. I don't know if it was an experiment.
(10:24):
This is they went all the way and they I mean,
they commit more than you do to your wife. I mean,
this is a big deal. He threw for one hundred
and sixty nine yards to interceptions, sacks six times in
thirteen games with the Browns. Deshaun Watson is average one
hundred and eighty three and a half yards passing per game,
(10:46):
fifteen touchdowns, eleven interceptions. Passer rating is seventy. They owe
him two hundred and thirty million dollars day Stata Day,
Stannata Day. This is the Stele of the Day. Stat
(11:10):
of the Day, brought to you by Pandi America, the
official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Now, this
was they took a chance on him with his behavior
off the field. On the field, we thought he can
be a top five quarterback. Last time we really saw
him play at a high level, he was a top
five quarterback for a team I think won four games,
(11:32):
so that wasn't really in question. I watch him and
he looks like a zombie. He looks like he is
a shell of who he once was. There's no confidence
at all. He just doesn't look dynamic. He doesn't look excited,
fresh springy, ready to go, like come on, Dak did,
(11:52):
but Dak just got paid. Deshaun's already gotten paid. Like
it's just weird. You watch and you're going, does this mean?
Like do you care? And I don't get that feeling.
But hey, the Browns went in on, all in on him,
and is that going to be? They were a good team.
Joe Flacco took them to the playoffs. They have the talent.
(12:16):
I know that they don't have Nick Chubb but still
Joe Flacco didn't have Nick Chubb. They should be better.
Got Miles Garrett. Defense should be good. I mean, you're
watching and when you see Deshaun Watson, I don't see somebody.
I don't see him really there, and that's what you
(12:38):
want with your quarterback. Caleb Williams didn't play well, but
Caleb Williams was there in the moment. He was excited,
he was yelling. I mean, that's what you want, be
a leader. And I didn't see anything from him, and that,
to me would be what it's already concerning. That you
spent all that money, I'm like you are. Well, they
were desperate. They were That's why they gave him that contract.
(13:01):
He didn't want to go to Cleveland. And then all
of a sudden, we're going to give you an offer
that you can't refuse. Two hundred and thirty million guaranteed. Okay,
I'll go to Cleveland. Well, so what you paid for,
good luck with that. This is the next five years
of your franchise. You guys want a new stadium. Yikes, yikes, yeah.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
Pulley, Yeah, Deshaun Watson. I went back and looked at
his stats in Houston. He was up for Rookie of
the Year before he got hurt. Then he went to
three straight Pro Bowls at age twenty seven to twenty eight,
twenty nine. That's his Cleveland years. That's your quarterback prime
you're entering. He's uh thirteen starts, fifteen touchdowns, eleven picks.
He's a fifty nine percent passer, and his quarterback rating
is seventy eight.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
That's below average. That's like a nice C minus.
Speaker 6 (13:47):
And over the next two seasons, Deshaun Watson, he gets
paid a lot of money.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
He gets paid no matter what.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
But his cap hit on the team, which they could
knock it out of is seventy two million dollars in
twenty twenty five and seventy two million dollars in twenty twenty.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Yeah, that's hampering.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Yeah, Yeah, that organization, those owners, they were desperate to
get a quarterback in there. And see, that's what I
don't understand. There's quarterbacks out there.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Now.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Granted there's only one Mahomes like, there's only like one
of these types of quarterbacks, and there's probably a handful,
but there are a lot of quarterbacks out there, and
quarterbacks who are coming into the league. They're already developed,
they're ready to get I just I can't buy into
a quarterback like that, literally buy into a quarterback like that.
(14:38):
I thought the Cowboys were going to go all right, Dak,
let's just play this out. And then all of a sudden,
now you're all in for the remainder of Jerry Jones's life.
Dak Prescott's going to be your quarterback. They're in it
for life. I don't know how long that contract is.
I don't want Does Jerry Jones know now, I don't
know if he knows, but I'm telling him that this
(15:00):
is your quarterback.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
Man.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Mike McCarthy's not going to be your head coach, but
Dak is your quarterback. And of course they wait till
the very end of the you know, right up to
the start of the season. It's only Jerry cann So
just some random thoughts there over the weekend, biggest surprises
in a negative way. That's our poll question for the
first hour here, and then when we come back, PAULI
(15:25):
thinks Fox has a Tom Brady problem that might not
be fixable. I'll tell you what that is. Right after
this Dan Patrick show.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
Updating the line from DraftKings the Jets getting four and
a half tonight against the forty nine ers. I do
have the over under Aaron Rodgers passing yards? All right?
Who will throw for more yards? The over under for
Brock party or Aaron Rodgers Marvin Niners apologist. I'll go
(16:44):
with you first. Who has a higher over underpassing yards tonight?
Rogers are pretty Aaron Rodgerson, all right? The answer is
Brock Perty, Bye ya, that's my guest. Bye by a
yard two thirty four and a half for Aaron Rodgers
(17:05):
to thirty five and a half for brock Perty. Now
that surprises me with Aaron Rodgers, because I'm thinking, if
you're gonna win this game, I'm assuming you're gonna throw
for two seventy five to eighty three hundred. Rock Perty
may just be maintaining an offense there, not doing anything crazy.
Although Garrett Wilson is expected to have a big game,
(17:27):
his over under receiving yards is sixty nine and a
half and uh, Christian McCaffrey over under rushing yards seventy
two and a half, Breese Hall sixty two and a half.
But the Jets are getting four and a half updated
Super Bowl odds. By the way, it's the Chiefs, then
the Niners. The Eagles and Lions are tied, and then
(17:50):
it's the Ravens and then the Texans. You know, I
watched the Texans in the Colts and uh, Anthony Richardson
I think had eight completions, but two really impressive ones.
He had one that was sixty yards off his back
foot with a defender in his face, and he was
right on the button. There's nobody else I don't think
(18:11):
in the NFL who could make that throw because he
is the biggest quarterback in the NFL off his back
foot sixty yards with just a flick. You know, this
wasn't like Mahomesyan. This was different. This was like crazy,
that throw right on the button, and he made it
look easy. There are times when he does things where
(18:33):
you go if he figures out how to play the game,
and that sounds strange, I'm sure, but you got to
understand picking your moments, you can't have eight completions, don't
rely on running so much. But as far as talent goes, whoop,
he might be as talented as anybody at that position.
(18:54):
I mean there's a Cam Newton type feel to him,
and probably a better thrower or the opportunity to be
a better thrower career wise than Cam. A couple of
things here that I was looking at stat wise watching
the Giants, and I said, you know, the Giants to me,
you let Sakwon go, and yes he does have a
(19:14):
big game on Friday night, but you you kind of
you doubled down on Daniel Jones. That's the problem I had.
And you know they don't score a touchdown, they get
blown out by the Vikings. In the last two season openers,
both at home for the Giants, the Giants have been
outscored by combined sixty eight to nine sixty eight to nine.
(19:38):
They haven't scored a touchdown in their season opener the
last two years. Stat of the day, stat of the day,
but both stead of the day stat of the day
here it comes that what stat of the day? And
since signing that contract extension in the offseason, Daniel Jones
(19:59):
is one in six touchdown passes and three interceptions. This
is what I don't understand. If you're not keeping Saquon Barkley,
you know you're still rebuilding, why do you want Daniel
Jones and pay Daniel Jones if you're rebuilding. It doesn't
It's like the person who is in the middle lane
and can't decide if they want to be in the
(20:19):
right lane or the left lane. Pick a direction. And
that's the problem that I have with this. The Giants
didn't pick a direction because you're kind of still all
in even though you let Saquon Barkley go. And I
would have kept Barkley because of Daniel Jones. He's going
to help him. Now, I don't know if Saquon is
(20:42):
going to stay healthy the entire year. That's usually the
knock on Saquon Barkley. But still, if I'm keeping Daniel Jones,
I would keep Saquon Barkley. If I'm getting rid of
Daniel Jones, then I get rid of Saquon Barkley, and
I would have traded Saquon Barkley in the off seat
or you know, last year before the tradeadline. If you
know you're not going to sign him, get something. It
(21:05):
just giants that organization. Somebod you're going to pay the
price for. That is probably going to be the GM
the Bears first team in history to not score an
offensive touchdown, have fewer than one hundred and fifty total yards,
and rally from at least seventeen down. I don't know
(21:29):
if you're a Bears fan, did it feel like a win? Paully?
Did it feel like a win for you?
Speaker 4 (21:37):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (21:38):
Man?
Speaker 6 (21:38):
I watched every minute of it, and the first half
was so bad. I mean, there's nothing to like in
the first half. Plus Justin Fields is starting for Pittsburgh's
You're like, oh my gosh. If Justin Fields has a
good day. It compounds the issue and the expectation or so.
It was not an offensive win. It was a special
team's defense win. It's one of those. It wasn't a loss,
but I don't feel great today.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
Now.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Do I think Caleb Williams is going to be fine?
Speaker 4 (22:02):
I do.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
But the thing that concerned me the most is I
thought their offensive line was going to be pretty good
this year. And I think that's going to be the
big question here. If the offensive line is not good,
then Caleb Williams is going to have a rough rookie season.
It's just like when I watch you know, Shardor Sanders,
(22:23):
I don't care how good you are. If you don't
have an offensive line, not going to have time. And
their offensive line was terrible last year. And then Shardor
Sanders threw his offensive line under the bus after the
loss to Nebraska. He should be throwing his dad under
the bus. He's the one who brought in these offensive linemen.
(22:46):
But Nebraska was the story. In my opinion, Nebraska feels
like there's something going on there. Matt Ruhl did a
good job. It looks like you got your quarterback, and
their defensive line put a lot a lot of pressure.
Speaker 10 (23:00):
Now.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
I don't know how good they are watching Colorado's offensive line.
But still, you got the two best players who are
going to be first round picks, top ten, maybe top
five picks. It doesn't matter. Travis Hunter is wonderful, Sure
Door Sanders is going to be a first round pick.
If you don't have a good offensive and defensive line,
you don't win in college football. Playing simple. All right,
(23:25):
we'll get some phone calls here, and still waiting to
get an update on Pukinnakua and his knee. That did
not look good. Jordan Love is probably I've had that
injury before mcl spring and obviously not doing anything anywhere
near what he would be doing. But that's a couple
of weeks, probably three weeks maybe best case scenario where
(23:49):
you're going to be you're gonna be kind of not
doing much, and you know, he got hit by two
big guys. I think I think they were trying to
point out that it was the field. Now that field
was not good, but still I just think he got
hit up high and you know, down low and could
(24:09):
have been could have been season ending those kind of hits.
All right, So PAULI I come in this morning, and
I said, uh, so, what did you think of Brady's debut?
And he goes, I think Fox has a problem and
I don't know if it's fixable, and I said save,
so here we go.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
Okay.
Speaker 6 (24:29):
So I'm not gonna be too critical of Tom Brady's
analysis because it's its first game and it's the most
reviewed first game of our analyst of all time.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
He's gonna be fine. He knows football. That's not gonna change.
He'sa be great.
Speaker 6 (24:41):
The problem is, and I remember Drew Brees during the roast,
goofing on Tom Brady talking about his squeaky little voice
and having fun with it. Tom Brady is a very
high pitched voice, and the more excited he gets, the
more high pitched it is. And it doesn't present greatly
on on TV on audio wise, and I think you know,
if you listen to someone like Troy Aikman, even Chris Collinsworth,
(25:03):
his voice is a bit naisily.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
And I'm being kind, it's a bit naisily. Tom has
to have command in his voice.
Speaker 6 (25:09):
You have command in your voice when you're on the air,
and it's different than when you talk in daily life.
But he doesn't he's got to have more gravitas and
command in his voice. It just sounded airy, and I
thought made for a tough listen to that point.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Well, we talked about this last week and I said,
Tom Brady knows football. He has to know television. He
has to understand TV. He didn't understand TV yesterday, the
timing of it. And he's used to people asking him questions.
People don't ask you questions necessarily when you're doing a game.
You got to react to that. Now, Kevin Burkhart may
(25:43):
ask him a question and probably has to ask him
a few more questions to get him in conversational mode.
But Tom, to me was there were pauses. His cadence
wasn't smooth. There was very little synchronicity. He needed to
be more of at the line of scrimmage as if
he's quarterbacking he was back as if he was the
(26:06):
third string quarterback. You got to be in it up front.
You got to be attacking, You got to see everything.
Now that's fixable. He's got to understand you have to
be aggressive. You have to see it, say it, get out.
Let your play by play guy take over, see it,
say it, get out, react, don't be afraid to say,
(26:28):
what is Deshaun Watson doing? Or what's Cleveland do? What's
their game plan? Like, you have to do that, And
he for twenty five years goes to a press conference
and doesn't want to tell you something. Now you have
to go to a game and you have to tell
us something. What is it you see that we wouldn't see.
(26:50):
That's what I want from Tom Brady. And once again,
you can simulate these games. He can practice broadcasting. It
doesn't matter because you never know what's happening in a
game until you're in that moment, and then what do
you do. He's going to go back and listen to
this and he's going to realize that there were moments
(27:12):
like that where he's sort of pausing. You gotta be
you gotta go get it, You gotta tack because if
you don't, then there's going to be some dead air.
Now you're really reliant on you know, Kevin Burkhart, He's
got to fill in all of that. I'm not saying
go Romo, but I'm saying, you gotta tell me something
(27:32):
that I go. I'll be damned and never would have saw.
I've seen that. That's what I want out of Tom Brady.
He knows football, he has to understand TV.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Yes, it was almost like he had too much information
that he couldn't share any of it in some way,
you know. And I think it's like just sort of
a reminder that it's hard to do, you know.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
I think he was over prepared. I do, but I'm
not surprised at that, because I think everybody thought he
would be all in on Tom Brady, I'm gonna over prepare. Well,
sometimes you can't over prepare, and then all of a
sudden your brain freezes up because you're like I got
seven things to say and I can't say anything. Yeh see.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
And I think there might have been a little bit
too much emphasis on dumbing it down a bit too
from Tom's standpoint, because.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
He could probably speak to it at a very high level.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
But you know, the analysis has to be better than like,
you know, you're thrown into tight coverage there, that's going
to be a tough throw. Yeah yeah, yeah, that's right.
Or you know, like, well, Tom, what'd you think of that?
Speaker 4 (28:35):
First off?
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Well, they're going to have to stop with so many
negative plays. Yeah, yeah, that's right, that's right. Well, he
did say you're not gonna win if you keep going backwards. Correct,
that is true, Yes, thank you, actually.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Correct there there were there was a moment where he said, man,
ten yards in the NFL is hard to get. Fifteen
yards is really really hard to get it. Then twenty
yards is really really it's harder than the first. Okay,
got it. It's hard. You know it's hard. Well, we
all think we can do it. We're like, you know,
just just see it. But he's not programmed. Now you've
(29:09):
got to program yourself. You see it, say it. You
got fifteen seconds, now get out, Next play twenty seconds.
Get out a review, controversial play, something you don't like,
something you saw during the week when you did film,
like whatever it is, it's just a conversation, not you know,
(29:33):
let me wait for you to tee me up. That's
you can't do it. Tom's got to be aggressive. Yeah, see, yeah,
you know, I think you guys kind of hit on
it there.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
I couldn't put my finger on it yesterday when I
was watching the game listening to him, but right, he
didn't sound confident, which that's kind of like, there's no
way that that was the guy that was in the
huddle with people and I think people want the guy
in the huddle, not as much the like, well, I
think I'm kind of doing TV right now. Ish you
want to hear the conference where it's the quarterback. You
(30:03):
can't be thinking about doing TV. Yeah, he's got to
be thinking about attacking this as if he was playing
the game. Get emotional, you know, like Colt McCoy in
the Colorado Nebraska game.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
I wanted more emotion out of Colt McCoy. I wanted
him excited. I want him in the game feeling like
he's playing the game. And that's, you know, the critique
I would give Tom. You're at the line of scrimmage,
tell me what you see. That's you know. He did
have a He talked about breather plays for I think
(30:38):
Deshaun Watson or No, it was for Dak Prescott because he's,
you know, all these plays where he's trying to elude
Miles Garrett, so you run, you call some breather plays.
I had not heard that before, but that's to you know,
allowed Dak to not be running around and handing the
ball off. So they're called breather plays. I like that,
but you got to get the specificity of like the
(31:02):
nuance of the game, and you should have that more
than anybody else. Yes, Tom.
Speaker 7 (31:07):
I'm also curious, especially if he's doing a non competitive game,
how open will he be to share stories, whether it
be about.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Well, that was a competitive yesterday, and.
Speaker 7 (31:16):
Is it fair to expect that he'll have some interesting
stories to just keep the broadcast lively if the game
itself isn't going to be excited.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Well, you had that opportunity yesterday, so that wasn't a
competitive game. And yes, you're gonna have to have those
moments where you're bringing up things and and I you know,
he does have a good sense of humor. You know
privately when you speak to him, he's got a good
sense of humor. He's funny, he can make fun of himself.
I just think he was all buttoned up, like he's
(31:44):
he's got that suit and tie and you know he
got hair and makeup, and you're buttoned up. You got
to go out there, you got EyeBlack. I mean, you
gotta be ready to go, tape your ankles like anything,
to just get ready get in the moment.
Speaker 6 (31:58):
Yeah, Paul, And going back to Rady's voice, I'm not
dinging it.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
It's just what it is.
Speaker 6 (32:03):
And I don't know if any producers during the rehearsal said,
you got to bring it up like you're a play
and you're projecting to the back of the room. I
don't know if Troy Aikman in personal life talks like
he talks on the air. He talks with a little
bit more of a GRAVI toss in his voice, and
you could feel and it feels like he's absolute in
control of the broadcast.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
All right, Well, take a break. We got our play
of the day coming up. Top of the hour. We'll
talk to a TV critic, Andrew Marshawn from The Athletic
get his thoughts on Tom Brady's debut and also direct
TV and the Mothership. When's this going to be settled?
And then you got the game tonight on the Mothership
(32:41):
the Northern Illinois head coach Tom Hammock he will join us.
Andrew Whitworth, a former RAMS Pro Bowl tackle, will stop
by as well. So we got a lot of things
going on. Your phone calls are coming up next, Best
and Worst of the weekend.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
After this, be sure to catch the live edition of
The Dan Patrick Show week days at nine am Eastern

play of the day.
Speaker 9 (33:14):
Check this out, love us swallow it up, gets rid

the five to the end zone, ty reach Stephenson for

eat just popped it into the air. The easiest pick
six you're gonna find for tiring Stevenson.

You know a lot of announcers fall into the cliche
pond and sometimes you're in maybe shallow water, then you
(34:22):
go in a little too deep. But when Tom says,
these negative plays hurt you so much in football, so
many of these games I went into, we figured out,
how do you not go backwards? Negative plays really keep
you from scoring? Okay, that just feels like we're filling
up some time there, and Tom Brady is better than that,
(34:44):
and that's what he's gonna Yeah, I mean it's going
to be painful. Do you want to talk about a
film session. This would be painful. This will be as
painful as a bad game when he was playing for
the Patriots with Bill Belichick. Because it's going to hurt,
it does hurt. You don't like to be critiqued, even
when your bosses call you in. And Tom's going to
(35:07):
be critiqued. He should be critiqued. Somebody should be able
to say to him, Tom, what does this mean? Or
why are we saying this? Okay, let's come up with
better things to say. Be aggressive, don't be afraid. And
sometimes you can go into a broadcast. I used to
do this on Football Night in America. I was so
(35:29):
concerned with being perfect that I didn't come off as
having fun because you want to make sure you get
every score right, stat right, you want to have energy,
all of that. And I was so and I did
this at Sports Center. I was so concerned about being
perfect every night, and you can't be. And I think
(35:50):
once we started doing this show, I just realized, Hey,
if you make a mistake, you make a mistake. But
you need to be user friendly, not try to be perfect.
And lord knows we're not. But I think that kind
of held me back in my career. Tom can't go
in to and be perfect. He can't. And if you
(36:12):
think you are, it's going to paralyze you. And I
know that we'll overthink this. He might overthink this. He
just needs to listen to himself and be analytical, critique
himself as if he was playing quarterback, or have somebody
who will do that for him.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Yes, it was a little like Alex Rodriguez ish the
whole Tom Brady right like he didn't want to make
a mistake, which I get, but you kind of you
have to be able to laugh at yourself to some degree,
and so you just kind of have to go for it.
I would imagine and understand that it's not going to
(36:50):
be perfect, then that's okay.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
And I think that's a great analogy because a Rod
tries to be perfect, therefore he doesn't come off as natural.
You got to just have fun with it. You're calling
a game. You know the game. You're the greatest quarterback
of all time. You see something pointed out, something that
you would see at the line of scrimmage, whatever it is,
(37:12):
we only know what you tell us. It's okay, and
tell us his story. Give me a Belichick story, give
me a few of them. You didn't let us behind
the curtain for twenty years. Now open the curtain. Have fun,
and really that's the most important thing. Have fun, And
(37:35):
he probably doesn't know what that is when it comes
to broadcasting. Have fun with it. Don't analyze everything you
say and cliches, and there's nothing wrong with like, oh
my god, like have fun. That's what you would do
in a game. I'm not asking you to react when
(37:55):
you know you had an interception at the end at
the gold line against Seattle Malcolm Butler when Tom was
going crazy on the sidelines, But show some enthusiasm. Nothing
wrong with that. Have fun, Alan, Atlanta, Hi, Alan, what's
on your mind.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Good morning, Dan. I don't really know how to label
this first one, but I'm gonna go with it anyway. So,
catching up on the Gambling podcast this weekend, I was
disheartened to here anyp fading the Falcons and Shaye and
Irving wanting to bet that Raheem Morris is the first
head coach fired this year. Not cool, although, judging by
(38:35):
their betting records, is probably best for me if they
actually think that. And I'd like to challenge Shay because
I'm pretty sure Mike McCarthy will allow longer be the
Dallas head coach and Raheem Morris and we'll still be
the head coach of the Falcons. And onto the definite
works of the weekend. Do we really need to say
(38:56):
anything else? Like that second half? Every time Kurt touched
the ball for the second half, it was just here
you go, may you Steelers take that ball? We don't
want it anymore. It was the worst.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Steelers just kicked another field goal.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
Well, oh and it was to Arthur smith.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Is the didn't work? Yeah, well, hey, I'm in on
the Falcons. I'm not fading them. I like the Falcons.
I liked them too much. I said that Gus in
La Hi, Gus, Oh.
Speaker 10 (39:30):
Good morning, mister patche You go from Allen, Atlanta with
his boat to my Steelers.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
Come on now.
Speaker 10 (39:37):
It was ugly, but it was a win, right, good
god that was I mean, like, I'm watching it and
I'm like, the Falcons are gonna score, right, they got
to score, right, They're good to score. Oh they didn't
score all right, But you know what a great weekend.
My Trojans rolling, notre shame losing, my Dodgers winning. It
was a great weekend, perfect weekend all around. I love
(40:00):
that they gave Dak Prescott the big contract. I can't
wait to see Micah Parsons leave for the Eagles and
free agency.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
I mean, what, it's time.
Speaker 10 (40:09):
To be alive. I love it. Happy you boys, have
a great week No work through the weekend?
Speaker 2 (40:15):
All right, thank you? Gus? Yeah there. You know it's
interesting when you you'll see somebody on Saturday, and then
you may see them on Sunday. And Saturday they had
a great day and Sunday they didn't, or vice versa, like, hey,
are you still feeling good? No, see what happened to
(40:35):
the Bengals?
Speaker 1 (40:36):
Oh yeah, Marlin, Yeah, Monday morning for people that live
and die with their football teams.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Hey, John, how's it.
Speaker 5 (40:46):
Patriots lost by a ton?
Speaker 2 (40:47):
Yeah? Yeah, See.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
I was talking to this dude this weekend and he's like,
he had some parlay going and if you put a
thousand dollars on he would have hit for like fifty
one grand or something, but he forgot to do it
the night before a lot in all these games, and
he's like, You're like, no, no, He's getting text messages
from people like hey, look, so and so just hit
the over or whatever, and he's just losing his mind
(41:08):
because he forgot to put the bet in ouch. Yeah, dang, dude,
that is tough.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
Yeah, all right, we will recap our one poll question.
We'll talk to Andrew Marshawn. He's a sports media critic.
He has thoughts on Tom Brady. I think Gus in
La needs to give Tom Brady a little bit of
his voice, a little bit of that baritone. Also, the
Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock will join us as well.
(41:35):
More of your phone calls just getting started on this Monday.
Fritzy Seaton, Marv Paulie, yours truly
