Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We'll talk about Tom Brady's debut. We'll talk about Notre
Dame being Notre Dame. They have one or two of
these games every year where you go, alrighty, why is
Marshall getting staying in this game? Why now I'm watching,
you know, the game against Northern Illinois. I'm going better
pick it up here a little bit, because all of

(00:25):
a sudden, Northern Illinois is like, hey, you know what,
We're staying in this game. We're not in this game.
We're staying in this game. It's just like the Patriots.
The Patriots against the Bengals. I'm watching. I'm going, okay, Bengals,
better pick it up a little bit, and then I'll
love a sudden the Patriots. We're in it to win it.
Pull question, Seaton, what are we going to start off with?

(00:46):
Why don't we start with who had the worst weekend?
Get Monday going the right way? All right, all right,
we're going to trend negative here first hour. So Patriots
meat the Bengals, Lions in overtime. Last night, Chargers playing
Jim Harball or is it just Jim Harball? Because they
handled the Raiders there, Vikings look good, Saints look good,

(01:07):
Jayden Daniels goodish. Tyreek Hill gets detained and then can't
be detained by the defense when he scores an eighty
yard touchdown and Russell Wilson Junior third sits. Do we
have a quarterback controversy in Atlanta with the Falcons? Jordan Love,
It's not as bad as we thought. Poka Nakua, We're

(01:29):
not sure how bad it is. Texas over Michigan, NIU
stuns Notre Dame, and Nebraska handles Colorado Jets Niners coming
up tonight, whew, crazy weekend, and then Sunday morning. Sunday morning,
you're just kind of going, okay, let me watch the
pregame shows. Justin Field's okay. There were some indications on

(01:52):
Friday and Saturday that he was probably going to start
because Russell Wilson was not healthy. Then all of a sudden,
Dak prescotts his contract go on. Of course he does.
Of course, Jerry Jones does it right before game time.
Tom Brady making his debut in DAK signs his contract,
and then you see the Tyreek Hill video where when

(02:16):
I was told he was detained, I thought well, okay,
wait a minute, what does that mean? Detained? And then
I realized detained meant you're on the ground, face first
and handcuffs on you. I would think that most of
the security people at the stadium a home game would
have an idea of what cars players drive, or Hey,

(02:39):
this is five hours before the game coming to the stadium,
and I guess he reckless driving. I don't know, speeding,
I'm guessing in his sports car. But next thing you know,
he's on the ground in handcuffs a home game and
then ends up scoring an adr touchdown. What else do
you have there? And so who had the worst weekend? Yeah,

(03:02):
we could actually keep it just to college and just
go with Colorado, Michigan or Notre Dame. Those are three
bad weekends. It's Notre Dame. It's Notre Dame because I
didn't think Colorado was going to win. By the way,
the story should be Nebraska football. It's not going to be,
but it should be because if I've said this over

(03:23):
and over and over, college football is about offensive line
and defensive line. You can have skilled position players, as
Colorado does, but if you don't have an offensive line,
it doesn't matter. And Nebraska looks like they have an
offensive and defensive line. They got a good quarterback, and
they were the better team and that place was rocking.

(03:45):
So I'm not surprised at that with Colorado and Nebraska,
Notre Dame, I'm shocked because you just beat Texas, A
and m Your schedule's not difficult. You have USC at
the end of the season. Okay, maybe you have one loss,
but you're going to be in the playoffs. Can't lose
to Northern Illinois. That one was terrible. Michigan when we

(04:10):
had Joel clott On and he did the game with
Gus Johnson and I'm looking at that line and it's
seven points, and I said, you know, to Joel Klatt,
is this more about Texas or more about Michigan. He goes,
It's really about both. I think it was more about
Michigan at home a seven point underdog. They lost a
lot of players to the NFL Draft. Texas is a

(04:31):
really good team, and I'd probably say there's maybe five
teams that can win the National Championship maybe, and Texas
is certainly one of those teams. But watching that game,
they were far better than Michigan, and I guess I
was surprised because he was a home game, but they
made it look easy. Nebraska made it look easy, and

(04:54):
Northern Illinois just stayed. We're going to talk to their coach.
He's going to join us next hour, Thomas Hammock, and
he's been there like five years, maybe this is his
sixth year, but he's going to join us coming up.
And it was great after the game, emotional the interview
that they had with him after the upset. So he'll
join us a little later on. We'll talk a little

(05:15):
bit more about Tom Brady's debut. Pauli says that there's
an issue with Tom Brady and might not be fixable.
Is that am I quoting you correctly?

Speaker 3 (05:25):
I'm trying to be fair with save it.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Save it, Save it to next segment, Okay, because we
can all give our opinions on Brady, the game with
the Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns, and here's the other
thing over reaction Monday. But then also what is real?
That's what I try to take away, Like, Okay, it's

(05:48):
one game, man, the Saints look awesome? Is that real?
Caroline is bad? Again? Is that real? The Raiders? Is
that real? The Chargers? Their style is that the Giants?
Is that real? Saquon Barkley is that real? Like, those
are the things that I'm trying to figure out today

(06:09):
because we could overreact. But then there's also the reality
of that's going to be there the rest of the season.
That's not just one game and this is good and bad.
Is Dallas going to be that dominating Philadelphia? Jordan Love
got injured, but there's still going to be a formidable team.

(06:29):
The Lions are a really good team. So were the Rams.
You know, you're just watching, going Okay, the Bears didn't
show me anything Offensively, they will, but they didn't. Defensively
they did, so you're kind of looking at it and
sorting through and go, okay, do the Falcons have an

(06:50):
issue here? They got offensive weapons, they couldn't do anything
against the Steelers, and then the Steelers offense wasn't very good.
It was just feel. But then justin fields is like,
you're trying to figure Jacksonville. Does Jacksonville have a problem already?
That's the tricky part. Like the Titans. You know, Titans

(07:13):
did pretty well holding down the Bears offense, but offensively
they didn't look good at all. So that's the thing
I try to take away from today, like what is
real that we saw that's going to be sustainable? Bo
Nicks all right, showed some promise. I don't think they're
a playoff team. I think Jaden Daniels I said this,

(07:35):
he's going to rush for eight hundred yards. I don't
know if that's a good thing, but he's going to
rush for eight hundred yards this year, and you saw
that yesterday. But if I'm Jaden Daniels, I study a
little bit of RG three, and you know the good
and the bad because you start to run, they eventually
catch you and then when they do it hurts. So

(08:01):
just sort of watching these games and trying to figure
out is are the Chargers going to be Michigan? Are
they going to play Jim Harball? And that is justin
Herbert's not thrown for three hundred yards this year. They're
going to run the football defense defense, and you know,
running the game just like he did, running the ball

(08:21):
just like he did at Michigan. So those are the things,
you know, you're trying to take away and figure out
what is real because we do overreact all of a sudden,
somebody is unbelievable or Oh my god, did they like
Cleveland with Deshaun Watson. I saw an article here and
it says Cleveland should pull the band aid. That's it.

(08:44):
They're done with Deshaun Watson. Like and you know this
is described as knee jerk reactions, but it's you know,
you got an issue here. It says the Browns need
to pull the plug on Deshaun Watson experiment. I don't
know if it was an experiment. This is they went

(09:06):
all the way and they I mean, they commit more
than you do to your wife. I mean, this is
a big deal. He threw for one hundred and sixty
nine yards to interceptions sacks six times in thirteen games
with the Browns. Deshaun Watson his average one hundred and
eighty three and a half yards passing per game, fifteen touchdowns,

(09:27):
eleven interceptions. Passer rating is seventy. They owe him two
hundred and thirty million dollars.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
Stead of a day, stant of a day, Statuta day,
scant out a day.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
This is the Stele of the Day, stat of.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
The Day, brought to you by Panadi America, the official
trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Now, this was
they took a chance on him with his behavior off
the field. On the field, we thought he can be
a top five quarterback. Last time we really saw him
play at a high level, he was a top five
quarterback for a team I think won four games, so

(10:11):
that wasn't really in question. I watch him and he
looks like a zombie. He looks like he is a
shell of who he once won. There's no confidence at all.
He just doesn't look dynamic. He doesn't look excited, fresh springy,
ready to go, like come on, Dak did, but Dak

(10:32):
just got paid. Deshaun's already gotten paid. Like it's just weird.
You watch and you're going, does this mean it? Like
do you care? And I don't get that feeling. But hey,
the Browns went in on all in on him, and
is that going to be? They were a good team.
Joe Flacco took them to the playoffs. They have the talent.

(10:56):
I know that they don't have Nick Chubb, but still
Joe Flack didn't have Nick Chubb. They should be better,
got Miles Garrett. Defense should be good. I mean, you're
watching and when you see Deshaun Watson, I don't see somebody.
I don't see him really there and that's what you

(11:18):
want with your quarterback. Caleb Williams didn't play well, but
Caleb Williams was there in the moment. He was excited.
He was yelling, I mean, that's what you want, be
a leader. And I didn't see anything from him, and that,
to me would be what's already concerning that you spent
all that money, I'm like you are.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
Well.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
They were desperate. They were That's why they gave him
that contract. He didn't want to go to Cleveland, and
then all of a sudden, We're going to give you
an offer that you can't refuse. Two hundred and thirty
million guaranteed. Okay, I'll go to Cleveland. Well, so what
you paid for, good luck with that. This is the
next five years of your franchise. You guys want a

(11:59):
new stadium? Yikes, yikes, yeah, Pulley, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Deshaun Watson. I went back and looked at his stats
in Houston. He was up for Rookie of the Year
before he got hurt. Then he went to three straight
Pro Bowls at age twenty seven to twenty eight, twenty nine.
That's his Cleveland years. That's your quarterback prime you're entering.
He's uh, thirteen starts, fifteen touchdowns, eleven picks, He's a
fifty nine percent passer, and his quarterback rating is seventy eight.
That's below average. That's like a nice C minus. And

(12:27):
over the next two seasons of Shaun Watson, he gets
paid a lot of money.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
He gets paid no matter what.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
But his cap hit on the team, which they could
knock it out of, is seventy two million dollars in
twenty twenty five and seventy two million dollars in twenty
twenty six. Yeah, that's hampering.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Yeah, yeah, that organization, those owners, they were desperate to
get a quarterback in there. And see, that's what I
don't understand. There's quarterbacks out there now. Granted there's only
one Mahomes like, there's only like one of these types
of quarterbacks, and there's probably a handful, but there are

(13:04):
a lot of quarterbacks out there, and quarterbacks who are
coming into the league, they're already developed, they're ready to go.
I just I can't buy into a quarterback like that,
literally buy into a quarterback like that. I thought the
Cowboys were going to go, all right, Dak, let's just
play this out, and then all of a sudden. Now
you're all in for the for the remainder of Jerry

(13:26):
Jones's life. Dak Prescott's going to be your quarterback. They're
in it for life. I don't know how long that
contract is. I don't want Does Jerry Jones know now,
I don't know if he knows, but I'm telling him
that this is your quarterback.

Speaker 5 (13:41):
Man.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Mike McCarthy's not going to be your head coach, but
Dak is your quarterback. And of course they wait till
the very end of the you know, right up to
the start of the season. A's only Jerry can. So
just some random thoughts there over the weekend. Fox Sports

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
He's Andrew Marshawn, the Athletic senior sports media columnist, and
he's got a podcast, twice weekly podcast and it's andrewmarshaant
dot com. To learn more about bring this goofy business
we call sports media. All right, if you're going to
give Tom Brady a grade, what would the grade be
with his debut yesterday? Go C plus probably?

Speaker 7 (15:12):
Now, it depends how you want to look at it.
If you're just grading him as a number one analyst
three hundred and seventy five million dollars and that's the level,
then it's lower because it wasn't great. But the way
I look at it is you have to give a
little bit of a curve here for his first game,
it's a learning experience. He's never done it. A lot

(15:34):
of rehearsals, but never done it live. And then when
we get to the Super Bowl, when I do my
Super Bowl column after that, there's no curve. That's where
if you sound like a rookie during the Super Bowl,
you're probably not going to put the column I write
the next day on your refrigerator.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
And he is so well known and we've heard from him,
we've seen him. It's, you know, twenty years plus, whereas
Greg Olsen, people didn't know what Greg Olson sounded like.
I know Brady and how he sounds, and it just
felt like Tom was trying to be too perfect instead
of like, he's got to understand TV and it's not football.

(16:11):
He knows that, but understanding how to incorporate his football
knowledge into fifteen seconds. That's the tricky part that separates,
you know, the good from the great.

Speaker 7 (16:22):
Yeah, cant he just be kind of a dude watching
the game. I think when you look at Romo got
out of the gate really fast. That was the reason why,
because he was really relaxed on the air, and you
could tell Brady was sort of thinking a lot. It
seemed pretty obvious Micah Parsons was going to be a
point of emphasis for him. He kept circling on and
then kind of stopping his thought. His syntax was stilted,

(16:45):
and so you got to get to a point where
you're just relaxed. I mean, he's lucky to have Kevin Burkhardt,
who's a really who's a guy who wants to make
his analysts better. So he's going to set him up
and try to, you know, have him be successful. But
it's comfort because it's different. And I think the one
thing that I think was a little bit of a
red flag if I'm Fox, is that the set pieces
that he did first on Saturday during the college football

(17:08):
game Texas Michigan and then in the pregame, they weren't great.
And those are the ones where you know, you know
this Dan, it's very set up right, you can plan
what you're gonna say, and what he said just wasn't
It wasn't detailed enough, it wasn't specific enough. It's had
more like a player as opposed to an analyst. And

(17:28):
that's where you know he can mature in this job.
But that's a little bit to me like, ooh, is
it there? Like I'm not saying it's not. I personally
think he's gonna probably grow in this job, but that
was a little bit of a red flag.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
Well, you know, for twenty years he went to press
conferences trying not to tell you something. Now you have
to tell me something.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
Now.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
He has to act like he's quarterbacking. He's got to
see the game that way. That's what we want from him.

Speaker 5 (17:53):
Now.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
I'm not saying go Romo, but I'm saying, you gotta
be somewhere in the vicinity or the neighborhood of I'm
excited about this.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
Ah.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
You know, there's nothing wrong with off Mike saying something.
If Kevin Burkhart's making a call like be excited, be
in the moment, because when he played the position, he
was excited. He's got to be more like on his toes,
like into it instead of waiting, you know, for something
to happen. You can hear his producer in his ear

(18:24):
a couple of times where he just he needs to
there has to be a little bit more synchronicity there
with his thoughts. Get him out, say something, don't try
to be perfect.

Speaker 7 (18:35):
I agree, but it's also comfort level because I think
a lot of times what's lost, especially a situation like
Brady where you know there could be all kinds of stories.
He clearly did this because the check was so large. Right,
he'd said on the record that he has no interest
in doing this. They offer him three hundred and seventy
five million dollars for ten years.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
He did it.

Speaker 7 (18:52):
It's Tom Brady. It is a big deal and if
he's good, it will be additive. That said, guys like
Tom Brady don't about calling the Super Bowl. They dream
about winning the Super Bowl, so they watch games differently
than you and I, where we kind of pay attention
to the announcers. The announcers are always trending on social media,
especially X.

Speaker 4 (19:12):
You guys like.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
Him generally speaking, and I'm not saying it's possible that
he does. You mentioned Johnny Miller during his podcast that
was somebody he thought he might be like. He was
nothing like Johnny Miller yesterday. But that's something you have
to learn. If you're not comfortable doing that, and you're
not comfortable, when do I get in?

Speaker 6 (19:27):
When do I get out?

Speaker 7 (19:28):
Which they've practiced and thoughts has already shown that they
know how to teach a player off the field to
be good with Greg Olsen, but it's still it got
to be instinctive. It can't be like, Ooh, I'm supposed
to do this. It's too fast to.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Do that, all right, Direct TV, ESPN summarize the situation
and any hope on the horizon.

Speaker 7 (19:49):
I mean, I think tonight's the big night, Monday Night football,
that's Jet's San Francisco. And you know, DirecTV, if you're
going to do a deal, you do it before Monday
night football because uh, there's gonna be this is where
people really start to get rid of your service.

Speaker 5 (20:05):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (20:06):
And so I mean this is where we're going. I
think ultimately it gets settled, and ultimately DirecTV does get
what it wants in terms of what it wants to
do is sell what they call skinny bundles, which is
you know, smaller packages. You know, forever ESPN has been
on basic cable and you know, it's it was worth
the most and it you know, like the bundle actually

(20:28):
was better than people thought dating back for a long time.
But now they want to be able to offer just
here sports, here's entertainment, and Disney of course wants just
to be on basic beyond every cable but for Direct TV,
and you know, their thoughts for them to survive, they
got to be able to compete with the netflixes and
with ESPN going direct to consumer next year and then

(20:48):
if they can start their new service Venue Sports, which
is with Fox Sports and Warner Brothers, Discovery, T and
T Sports. So that's what's I think. Ultimately they get
their number, the number stays high for their their affiliates,
and then they're allowed Directivi's allowed to do these smaller services.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Talking to Andrew Marshawn, the Athletic Senior sports media columnist,
I brought this up when I realized that the NFL
was going to push for eighteen games, that I could
see the commissioner taking those eighteen you know, those extra games,
and they're all international. So you're telling, you know, these teams,
you're going to get X number of home games and
then try to set up shop around the world. We're

(21:27):
going to go global here. Rich Eisen said this on
his show. He could see the international games being sold
separately as a package deal. Are we headed in that
direction in your opinion?

Speaker 7 (21:41):
I mean, it's really kind of be amazing. If the
NFL was like really greedy and went for more money,
I'd be like a kind of a new thing.

Speaker 5 (21:48):
I guess it's possible.

Speaker 7 (21:51):
They have one hundred and ten billion dollars worth of
agreements already with the major networks in Amazon, so yeah,
like they'll sell some high say this, the NFL is
the best AT's selling you a pizza and they say, oh,
you know what, there's a little clause in here. That
half eaten pizza that you have, we're gonna sell to
somebody else now for you know, a couple of more billion.
So the idea of that happening seems very plausible to me.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
Any other sports media topics that we should be aware.

Speaker 7 (22:19):
Of, and you know, I think NFL, you know, we
got the Netflix coming up during Christmas is an interesting
story to watch. And the NBA deal that just went down.
I think when you look at what the future of
media is, I think there's something that's misunderstood by the
general public. In my opinion, this is what it's gonna

(22:41):
be in terms of live sports. This is where your
sports are gonna be on because the only real big
deal that's coming up, you know, NFL could sell, like
you just said, like a sliver of deals. But basically
this is what's gonna be until twenty nine when they
can opt out and then their contracts go for eleven
years if they don't opt out. Is that the NBA
just got done. UFC's out there, but this is where
Amazon is the new player. If you want to talk

(23:03):
about who's gonna fight ESPN for the future of you know,
of being the most dominant, it's probably Amazon. They already
have NBA, they already have NFL. They're trying to get
local rights in terms of the baseball football, I mean baseball, hockey,
and NBA. So I think Amazon versus ESPN is kind
of like an emerging matchup in terms of the in

(23:23):
the sports media game.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
Was ESPN gonna buy NFL network?

Speaker 7 (23:28):
I mean they've had talks, but right now those are stalled.
Now could they restart again?

Speaker 5 (23:34):
It's possible.

Speaker 7 (23:36):
The NFL has tried to sell NFL media for a
long time and they never do it. You know, the
NFL is used to being in every negotiation where it's like,
this is what we're gonna do, and this is how
we're gonna do it. You know, That's why it didn't
really work out with Apple and Sunday Ticket because Apple
is the same way. They're used to just telling people
what to do and everyone has to say yes. And
so it's not right now installed not happening at the moment.

(23:56):
Could happen eventually, still, I think possible, But maybe not
probable ball at this point.

Speaker 2 (24:01):
Good stuff. Great to talk to you, Thank you, Andrew.
Thanks Dan. Andrew Marsha, the athletic senior sports media columnist.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
This is how it sounded at the end of the game.
Is Northern Illinois beach Notre Dame at Notre Dame?

Speaker 4 (24:27):
Five seconds left?

Speaker 7 (24:28):
Then are you up?

Speaker 5 (24:28):
Sixteen fourteen?

Speaker 7 (24:30):
Sixty q yarder snamp hole Jeeters kick.

Speaker 4 (24:34):
That's fucked. It's fucked. It's fucked. Big by you, big up,
bye you.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
The Huskies, they've done it. The Buskies with.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
The biggest upset and AU this story.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
They come to South in Indiana.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
And they knock off the number five team in the country.

Speaker 4 (24:51):
N i U sixteen Notre Dame fourteen.

Speaker 7 (24:55):
The footbuck odds were shining.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
Down on AU. Northern Illinois was a twenty eight point
underdog in that game, but somehow they pulled it off
and their head coach Thomas Hammock joining us on the program. Coach,
thanks for joining us. Congratulations, how would you describe the
emotional roller coaster of Saturday's game.

Speaker 6 (25:17):
You know, it was unbelievable.

Speaker 8 (25:19):
You know, in the moment you thought back to all
the things that we've done to build a program to
what it was, and that was just the joy of our.

Speaker 6 (25:28):
Players getting a reward, the joy in their face.

Speaker 8 (25:32):
And so that was a really motion for me after
that game because it was just an unbelievable experience. The
kids believed they put the work in, and I was
just a proud you know, for our program and our players.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
Take me into the locker room at halftime, I told the.

Speaker 6 (25:48):
Players, you know, this is right where we wanted to be.
This is right where we expected to be.

Speaker 8 (25:53):
You know, we are a physical football team, so the
physicality never bothers me. You know, we're big on the
office of and deeps the blind and so all week
I told them, you know, we're going to be righte
where we want to be in this game from a
physical standpoint, if we handle the environment early and our
first kickoff return we let the ball bounce and got
the ball at the two yard line.

Speaker 6 (26:14):
I thought, hey, this.

Speaker 8 (26:15):
Has a chance to get away from us, but they
stayed in a fight, and when we got the halftime,
I said, listen, and we win one half of football,
we win the game, and we were able to get
that done.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
But you're telling these kids there in South Bend playing
against Notre Dame, most of them probably didn't even get
recruited by Notre Dame, and you got to quiet them
down a little, calm them down a little bit, but
you still want them to be fired up. So how
do you walk that tightrope there?

Speaker 8 (26:40):
Yeah, you know, the night before the game, I talked
to him, I said, listen, the rocket Ismael is not
running down that tunnel. And by the look on their face,
I realized they had no idea who I was talking about.
So then I had to take it a step further.
I said, you know, Joe Montana, Ricky Waters own better.

Speaker 6 (27:01):
And so they understood, those guys.

Speaker 8 (27:04):
But I guess what I wanted then to understand was
we were playing the twenty twenty four not Dame team.
We're not playing the nostalgia of Notre Dame. And they
stayed in a moment from that standpoint, and I was
happy to see it.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
You should have showed them the movie, Rudy.

Speaker 8 (27:23):
You know what I thought about that early in the
week but then I thought Rudy came out when I
was a kid, so I know for sure, you know,
they have no idea what we was about.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
It hits you right after the game.

Speaker 9 (27:36):
You got emotional, Yes, you know, because I talked to
our team before the season about the breakthrough and I
told them a bamboo takes five years to break through
the surface, and when it breaks through the surface, it
grows ninety feet.

Speaker 6 (27:50):
Well, this is our sixth year.

Speaker 8 (27:52):
We've done a lot of watering and a lot of
you know, getting these guys to mature, and that felt
like we started to break through at that moment, and
I was just, you know, flushed with a wave of
emotion that was unexpected. I'm normally not an emotional guy
in that capacity, but I thought about all the players
that have been a part of helping us build it,
all the coaches that have been a part of helping

(28:14):
us build it, and it was a great moment.

Speaker 2 (28:17):
What it feels like the college football nation is surprised.
It doesn't feel like you're surprised you beat Notre Dame
at Notre Dame.

Speaker 6 (28:25):
No, I wasn't surprised.

Speaker 8 (28:27):
And to take it a step further, you know, I
meet with my staff on a you know, game day
in the mornings, and I told him, I said, listen,
I had a dream we were gonna win this game
by a field goal.

Speaker 5 (28:37):
I know.

Speaker 8 (28:37):
I said, I had a dream the game was gonna
come down to a field goal. And I said, I
woke up. So I can't tell you what happened. I'm
not I'm not that I'm not that good, but I
had a dream that it came down to a field goal.
In the week before, we had some issues on you know,
extra point, and so I had that nervousness going about me.

Speaker 6 (29:01):
But I'm glad it turned out the way it did.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
It's Thomas Hammock, the Northern Illinois head coach. You got
a bye week this week. Do you wish you were playing?
Or are you glad you got to buy it?

Speaker 5 (29:10):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (29:11):
I am glad. I am glad we have a bye week.

Speaker 8 (29:14):
First of all, you know, obviously I've grown up watching you,
but like doing these type of things, it wouldn't be possible.
We had a game this week, and getting our players
off of the emotional high that they've been on, this.

Speaker 6 (29:28):
Is a great week we got.

Speaker 8 (29:29):
We got improvement practices, so we really can lock them
back in as a coaching staff to get them ready
for you know, our next game.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
Did anybody surprise you reaching out after you beat Notre Dame.

Speaker 6 (29:40):
Yeah, I'm a huge Yankees fan. Huge.

Speaker 8 (29:43):
I grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Aaron
Boone texted me Sunday morning and you I mean, you know,
for me, that was you know, you can you know
that was just an unbelievable text from him. You know,
he's in season for him to do that, and uh,

(30:03):
you know, being from the East Coast and listen that
that that that one got me.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
What did Coach Freeman say to you after the game?

Speaker 6 (30:12):
You know, he was very complimentary.

Speaker 8 (30:13):
You know, I had a chance to talk to him
before the game and just told him, you know how
five I was of him and you know, having an
opportunity to lead that program. Uh, And he was, you know,
my first time meeting him. I don't know him at all,
and he was very down to earth, very.

Speaker 6 (30:31):
Humble.

Speaker 8 (30:32):
You know, you figure, guys, the head coach, you know,
the Dame, he don't have to talk to me, but
for him to take time to speak to me, and
then obviously after the game, he was very complimentary, which
I thought was pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
Did Notre Dame recruit you?

Speaker 8 (30:46):
Oh no, no, I wasn't. I wasn't Noted Dame material
from a football standpoint. I was not the day material
from an academic standpoint, But from a football standpoint, I
wasn't close.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
Uh, you gotta gotta bring him back on earth today
at practice.

Speaker 6 (31:02):
Yeah, you know, we got to buy a week, so
I gave him a couple of days off. I'm from there.

Speaker 8 (31:06):
I'm from the NFL, right, and so you know, if
you win going into a buy, you give them some
more time off. If you lose, you get them back
on the practice. So, uh, you know, I gave him
a couple of days to get themselves back. But you know,
I'm looking at these emails about academics, so I'm on that,
you know, guys turning in work and different things like that,
because we are we are coaches and teachers, and that's

(31:29):
still a part of the job.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
Congrats, I know it's a long time coming. You've done
a great job there with your alma mater, and uh,
don't screw it up the rest of the season.

Speaker 6 (31:38):
All right, Thank you, I appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
Thank you, coach, Thank you, and go Husking.

Speaker 1 (31:45):

offensive tackle in the NFL Super Bowl champ with the Rams.

(32:15):
Four time Pro Bowler joints us on the program. How
are you feeling.

Speaker 5 (32:21):
I'm doing good, Dan, It's good. Football's back, baby, Let's go.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
Okay, explain your former team hosting the Patriots yesterday and
losing it home.

Speaker 10 (32:31):
You know you wanted to start there, Just just dig
dig in the knife a little bit.

Speaker 5 (32:35):
You know.

Speaker 10 (32:36):
I was heartbroken yesterday. I was so excited. I thought
Joe Burrows had all camp long. Now we're going to
finally get to see this Cincinnati team come out the
gates because it's something they've really struggled with.

Speaker 5 (32:45):
They've started the season really slow the last few years.

Speaker 10 (32:48):
He's been out a lot in training camp with different things,
and man, they look like a team honestly that has
been struggling to get contracts done with their wide receivers,
because that's what the.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
Offense looked like. They looked at a little.

Speaker 10 (32:59):
Lost execution, was bad ball security just unfortunately probably not
really the way they wanted to start it, and not
I think different this year because a lot of these
guys have missed time. Now Toe Higgins is injured, Jamar
Chase has missed all of camp. They've got to get going,
and they got to get going fast.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
I'm watching Matthew Stafford last night in the fourth quarter,
your former quarterback, and it's strange he's had like this rebirth.
Younger quarterbacks are talking about just how great he was,
and you know that c J. Stroud wants to be
like him, Caleb Williams wants to be like him. What
was Stafford like though in the huddle compared to other quarterback?

(33:40):
Is there anything that stands out? And have we taken
him for granted? Maybe during his career?

Speaker 10 (33:47):
I think that's really the last thing he said there
is really top of mind to me. I think we've
taken for granted how special this guy is. How you know,
really the impact he has as a quarterback. Man, he's
one of the rarest. And I think that you talk
about being in a huddle, I've always said Dan to me,
he was like, he's like John Wayne. He's the bad
cowboy dude who you're just like, never says a word.

(34:10):
I don't care if you get him hit. I don't
care if three people hit him. It doesn't matter what happens.
You look at him last night. They are hitting him
every single snap. Somehow he's able to get Cooper Cup.
Somehow he's able to find a receiver down the field
every play. I'm going, man, what a great completion is
Matthew still alive. Let's just hand the camera back over here.
But he never says a word. You never hear him

(34:31):
say a thing. But all he does is walk in
the huddle and say, hey boys, let's go get one
right here. He's just stone cold that way. And I
think it's really one of those things that you see
in in his team. They admire his toughness, they admire
the attitude he has. There's nothing that he can't accomplish
or or do on a football field because he's gonna
outwork everybody. He's gonna be the toughest sum of gun

(34:52):
in the huddle. I think he just gives you a
lot of inspiration to play for him by the way
he carries himself. And I agree with you on the
rebirth something about moving to LA from the Midwest.

Speaker 5 (35:02):
I know it.

Speaker 10 (35:02):
Well, that just gives you a lot of energy and
you know what you decide. Hey, maybe I'd go a
little longer than I thought. And I think you see
that in Matthew Stafford, that relationship with Sean McVay and
what's happening for him in La.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
How often would you get yelled at in the huddle
with other quarterbacks, Well.

Speaker 10 (35:19):
You don't get yelled at much, but you may hear, hey, guys,
what happened on that protection or you know, man, you
may hear a little complaint here or there about the
protection and needing time. With Stafford, it was always just
I'll find a way, and he'll never say a word
to you about it.

Speaker 5 (35:35):
He would just say, you know what.

Speaker 10 (35:36):
Hey, You'd be like, hey, man, you're all right, sorry
about that now, I'm fine. I'll worry about let's move
the next one. You know, like he no emotion about
those kind of things. And so I think that his
fire and his attitude is something you've fed off of.
That he would never complain about a single situation, and
even not necessarily in the huddle, but around the building
or two in a room. You wouldn't hear him ever
talk about those kind of things. It was always demanding

(35:57):
more of himself. And I think that in turn makes
you want to play better.

Speaker 2 (36:01):
Would you rather block for someone like Matthew Stafford or
someone like Josh Allen?

Speaker 10 (36:09):
Listen, you know, I think that that really goes down.
I have this talk all the time. You've been Patrick
mahomes right. He does a great job of avoiding sacks
and those kind of things, but they also move around
a lot in the pocket or hold it at times
to where you know, if you're talking about you as
an individual, like, Hey, if you're a left tackle, you
have a.

Speaker 5 (36:24):
Lot of pride protecting the quarterback.

Speaker 10 (36:26):
You're gonna occasionally have pressures or hits on the quarterback
that really don't have a lot to do with you.
You might have done your job, but then they go
to extend to play and there's just only so long
you can hold a block, and so it starts to
become a thing of Hey, is this about us winning
or is this about me having the best pass blocking
efficiency rate possible?

Speaker 5 (36:43):
Right?

Speaker 10 (36:43):
So I think whenever those guys do all that then
and you win, I think it's hey, that's great. But
when they're doing that and you may not be winning
and it may not be leading to success, I can
see where that starts to become an issue probably for
some tackles out there that hold themselves in that kind
of team that they say, hey, i'll want to be
the best and I want us to have the most
efficient offense possible.

Speaker 5 (37:04):
I think maybe you might get a little upset about.

Speaker 10 (37:06):
Them running around, but hey, when those lead to w's
and they lead the touchdowns, I think that's the only
thing everybody cares about.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Point of emphasis with tackles back a little bit, trying
to get back, you know, further protecting the quarterback?

Speaker 6 (37:21):
Here?

Speaker 2 (37:24):
Is this good? I mean, should we be focusing on
tackles who aren't lined up maybe where they should be.

Speaker 10 (37:31):
I mean it seems like something that's just not that
big a focus for me. But you know, listen, have
Ben playing tackle. I think it's a silly thing because
it's one of those things that you look at it
really it's about their feet being in lignment.

Speaker 5 (37:45):
We've kind of developed this belt thing, and.

Speaker 10 (37:46):
It had a lot more to do with guys in
three point stances. And so when you were down in
a stance, you couldn't back up to get an advantage
to be able to reach defensive ends, to be able
to reach d lineman because you were backed off the
line of scrimmage standing in the past blocking dance. You know,
as long as your feet or even with the centers
or somewhere in line, you're getting zero advantage. So for

(38:08):
us to worry about their helmet alignment, like you look
at some of the snaps with Ronnie Stanley, like his
feet are in direct line with everybody else. We're just
talking about where his helmet is based off how he
stands in a stands. I just for me, I hate
points of emphasis. I think that's a silly thing to
talk about. Like I'm a big believer and if rules
are rules, then enforce rules.

Speaker 5 (38:29):
If they're all of a sudden.

Speaker 10 (38:30):
Now we have rules, and now one rule is more
emphasized than another rule, I think that's a silly thing.
Like let's just have a rules and establishments of this
is the way we want to conduct business. This is
how penalties are gonna be called for every penalty, and
they're no such thing as emphasizing a rule. I just
think that gets to be silly because now you're looking
for it and you're trying to call it, and that's

(38:50):
not really the essence of why there's penalties and rules. Therefore,
you know what, if there's a fraction, If there's an infraction,
then call it.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
Aside from the obvious pick for your Super Bowl the
Rams versus the Bengals, do you have another Super Bowl pick?

Speaker 10 (39:07):
Well, I don't know if I have another super Bowl pick.
As much as based off of tonight, I think you'll
tell us. You know, really, we get a chance to
watch the Niners Jets. There's nothing from week one right
now that doesn't tell me that this might not possibly
be a rematch of the last Super Bowl we had.
And I still think the forty nine Ers is gonna
be one of the best teams in the NFC and
the Chiefs as of right now after Week one, watching

(39:28):
that week, there's nothing that tells me the threepeat is
not possible. I mean, obviously you expect there's going to
be adversity. They're gonna have to face at some point,
but right now, you know, after week one, I think
the Kansas City Chiefs are representing the AFC and still
feel strong.

Speaker 5 (39:44):
This may be a rematch from last year's Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (39:46):
Okay, let's play the Andrew Whitworth max bench press one rep.

Speaker 5 (39:52):
Ever.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Okay, Todd, I'll start with you. What do you think
Andrew's max one rep? Four hundred and thirty pounds or
thirty seating. I'm going four to seventy five, seventy five,
all right, Marvin four point fifty, Paulie for sixty five.

(40:14):
I'm gonna go for seventy five one rep.

Speaker 5 (40:17):
Cool close.

Speaker 10 (40:20):
I was actually at four ninety five. That was college.
You don't lift that heavy in the NFL anymore, you
can't get hurt. But in college, I think at four
ninety five for one.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
Wait, you got to put five really close. You got
to put five more pounds on. You got to do
five HUNDI, you know, I.

Speaker 10 (40:34):
Got hey listen this long reach right here, Dano. These
these thirty seven inch arms, you know, not really the
best bench presser, but you know that's what I got
to four. I'm pretty sure that was the strength. Coach
was like, that's it. We're not trying anymore. So I
barely got it there, and it might have taken about
a minute and a half for the bar to move
all the way.

Speaker 5 (40:53):
Up, But I got it there. That's all.

Speaker 2 (40:54):
Okay, the most you've ever seen was lifted by who
how much?

Speaker 5 (41:00):
Oh Man?

Speaker 10 (41:00):
In college there was we had some great lifters, you know,
but I would probably say, honestly, one of the strongest
guys I've ever seen as far as when you talk
about size weight ratio.

Speaker 5 (41:11):
You know, Aaron Donald, I mean literally, you know, I.

Speaker 10 (41:13):
Know he's great at everything, but I know it shocks
everybody to think that he's really powerful as well in
the weight room. But there was crazy strong. I mean,
what he could move on a bench press bar at
his weight is pretty insane, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (41:26):
Five hundred.

Speaker 5 (41:29):
Oh easily.

Speaker 10 (41:30):
I mean I think he worked out with four or
five or five for reps and five and six and seven.
I mean that guy was crazy powerful. So yeah, he
could definitely hit five hundred dos, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (41:38):
You don't see him coming back.

Speaker 5 (41:41):
I don't.

Speaker 10 (41:42):
He looks pretty comfortable, you know, I think you know
knowing ad listen, he's living in LA The career he
had listen, we're about to We're more likely probably see
him on a movie, you know, in.

Speaker 5 (41:53):
A documentary, a show. You know what. Eighty is the
man he's he's accomplished at all. He's having fun raising
his kids and enjoying life with his wife Erica.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
Good to talk to you. We'll talk to you during
the season. Have fun on Thursdays.

Speaker 5 (42:07):
Look forward to it. Man, Thank you so much.
