Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I don't want to hear the complaints. I don't want
to hear you give it hot. I did because I
love the wild card format. I love the best of
three because I get tension. This is what baseball needs.
It's tension. It's immediate. And if your team got bounced,

(00:25):
I don't want to hear you got one hundred and
sixty two games to alter getting in the or you know,
getting out of the wild card position, and you host
all three games. If it goes to three, you host
all three. Milwaukee gets to host all three, Houston was
going to host all three, Baltimore was hosting all three.

(00:47):
They got bounced. I love it. Tigers advance, the Royals advance,
Padres get the Dodgers. I love it. I think it's great.
You got the Brewers and you got the Mets coming
up later on tonight. And I know it's opposite football,
and it felt like they tried to cram in the
wild card round so it'd be like a week and

(01:08):
then you get ready to start coming up this weekend.
I love it. Baseball needs must see TV needs tension.
You need to watch every game is going to matter.
You win that first game on the road. Now you
got that home team on the ropes, and we saw them.
We got to see the Tigers do that to the

(01:28):
Astros and the Kansas City Royals, who might have of
pitching staffs, the two best starting pitchers on a pitching staff.
Now it gets dicey with every rotation after that. But
it used to be that was the formula. You had
two hammers and then you had some timely hitting, some
good defense, a decent closer. You were good to go.

(01:51):
And you start to look at the payroll disparity and
it's really remarkable. I'm watching the Astros game and here's
the Tiger in twenty twenty four. Their payroll eighteen point
eight million dollars.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
No, no, no, no, no, the whole team.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, their twenty six man roster cost eighteen point eight
million dollars in twenty twenty four. The Astros reliever Josh Hater,
he makes nineteen million dollars a year.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
Who stell of a day, start of a day, start
out a day, scant out a day. This is the
start of the day.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Teams who didn't advance the Astros two hundred thirty six million,
Braves two hundred and seventeen million, the Oriels ninety four million.
The Padres Advance there were one hundred sixty two million,
the Royals at one hundred and fifteen million. You get
these young teams, that's what's fun. They don't know, they
don't know any better. And the fact that you have

(03:02):
the Tigers manager Aj Hinch going back to Houston to
knock out the Astros. I thought it was great. It
was fun. There was tension, there was excitement. There's heroes.
I mean, you got Jackson Cheerio had two home runs.
His bat looks as quick as Barry Bonds, he's twenty

(03:24):
years of age, a couple of opposite field home runs,
and now you have Game three coming up with Milwaukee
and the Mets. I love it. Thought it was great,
it was exciting, and I haven't been able to say
that for a while. You know, the regular season is
so long. And look, we don't complain about March madness.

(03:46):
When the number one seeded team gets bounced in the
second round, we don't go that's not fair. There should
be a best of five or a bet. It's one baseball,
you get three basketball, one and done. If the NBA
did this. If they did a best of three, I'd
be in favor of it. I think it would be

(04:06):
great even best of five. The playoffs take forever. That's
where you get everybody's attention. I mean, you're gonna hear
it in my voice. This was fun. I really enjoyed it.
And yes, you lose the Astros. Would I like to
see them still be in there? Yes, because they're easy

(04:27):
to root against. The Braves were banged up. The Orioles
are just not a good postseason team. But the Tigers
in Royals, the Padres are so dangerous. Now you got
the Dodgers, we get Otani on a big stage. You
get to see Bobby Witt Junior, the third who might
be the fastest player in the game, should be the
runner up to judge for MVP. It's fun, it's fun.

(04:50):
I wish we could have seen Chris Saale. He's gonna
win the cy Young. Scooball with the Tigers, He's gonna
win the cy Young. It's fun, it's good, it's drama.
Loved it. Yes, tod I'm.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
Okay with the best of three in the first round.

Speaker 6 (05:04):
Two, but you like that the home that one team
gets all home field games. Like, what if you're a team,
you're rooting for a team and it's been many years
since they've reached the playoffs. You don't get a chance
to see them one time in game two, and you
still get the deciding game three back at your place.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well, well, if you're good enough, you see him in
the next round, and you can see him a couple
of times in the next round. There's one hundred and
sixty two games. Okay, it this isn't like, you know, hey,
two months. It's it's six months. It's not the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
It's a difference between home field advantage and having all
the games at home.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
To me, I would like to have seen a the
Mets going home to host this game tonight, build up
the tension. I would like to have seen that, But
you would have had to have them play on Friday,
and then you have games starting on Saturday. So I
think they crammed in the wild card best of three,
and yes, what I'd like to have seen the team

(05:59):
that wins two on the road or one on the
road be able to come back home. Yeah, I would
just to build up the tension. But here we are,
you know, best of three. You're at home. You get
to host all three. No excuses, no excuses. Yes, Mark, and.

Speaker 7 (06:15):
These wildcard teams should be grateful because if this was
thirty five years ago, you're not even in the playoffs too.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yes, yes, yes, we've created all of these playoff spots,
playoff scenarios.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Man.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
It used to be if you won the American League,
then you got to go to the World Series, or
you won the National League, you get to go to
the World Series. And we're creating all of these playoff
berths here. So the Tigers close out the Astros, Royals
close out the Orioles, Padres close out the Braves, and
you got the Brewers and Mets coming up tonight. We
do have football. It's the Buccaneers at the Falcons. All right,

(06:49):
I'm good, I'm good. NFC South inter Division Kirk d
Cousins mister Primetime against Baker Mayfield Junior. The third Buccaneers,
according to DraftKings, are getting one and a half against
the pesky Falcons. Marvin, all right, I have a poll question.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
If you could watch.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Wow, this might be a first come on, Get up Wow.

Speaker 7 (07:11):
Marvin all right, So if you can only watch one game,
Mets Brewers tonight's Thursday night football game? Was that Buccaneers Falcons?
It still is okay.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
The fact that you couldn't remember it is very telling
to what you should watch.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Me.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
That's a tough question. You got to completely ignore the
other one. It's not a flip back situation.

Speaker 5 (07:34):
Is it really a question?

Speaker 6 (07:36):
One is for all the marbles to move on to
the next round of the playoffs, and one's a week five.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
It's not the World Series, but it's still.

Speaker 5 (07:43):
Some of the marbles the next round of the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
On the line five one marble, I think, I think,
Oh it to baseball, Yeah, I think so. I think so.
I would tune in just to watch Jacksonurio. I tune
in just to see you get a big He's twenty
reminded me of Andrew Jones. Was that nineteen ninety six

(08:08):
Andrew Jones? I know that's a deep poll, but it
feels like didn't he have He kind of had a
coming out party in nineteen ninety six for the Braves.
Let me see, uh, youngest player to hit multiple home
runs in a playoff game since nineteen year old Andrew
Jones did it in the nineteen ninety six World Series.

Speaker 6 (08:29):
Statam the Dang start him the name start of the day,
Start of the Big Statu to day Start Ding Started.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
The Big Start Stout of the Day. Bronchu buyd Panini
America the official trading cards of the program.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yes, Paul, I'm looking at all the headlines.

Speaker 8 (08:46):
Tigers beat the Astros two zero, uh, Royals two oh
over the Oriols. I don't see the words sweep. Do
you use the word sweep in a three game series
or is that saved for the seven game series?

Speaker 2 (08:59):
I guess you could say swept them? Did they? How
about a well, how many does it take to constitute
a sweep? Four?

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Oh? Is a sweep, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Well, that's what we're down. We're used to that.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
So like a mini sweep a room, but you got
roomba or brushed off.

Speaker 6 (09:16):
Yes, I think it has to be at least a
best of five series to be a sweep. I've heard
the term sweep us they won two games. It seems
short of a sweep. They won, they won and advanced.
I don't know if I would refer to as a sweep.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
So just like a one like a swifter. Yeah, I know,
and nobody knows less about sweeping than you do.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
That is very true, all the more reason why I
try to stay away from the word sweep if possible.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
And you weren't joking that day when you did not
know how to use a broom.

Speaker 6 (09:42):
I was doing it exactly the way I thought it
should be used. I wasn't looking for any comic relief
for it to.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
No, you you gave comic relief. You had never used
a broom before.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
I ultimately got it done.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
It thing.

Speaker 5 (09:53):
I got you the crumbs and stuff on the foot together.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
It was we had confetti and you were using the
broom like a shuffle.

Speaker 5 (10:00):
But it took about two and a half hours longer
than it needed to based on the way I.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
You had never used a broom, and before that.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
I used one of those uh I don't know what
you call it, like a vacuum type.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
But no, I'm saying, once again, yeah, broom. You've never
used a broom up until that point.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
I think that's fair. I don't think I used the boomer.
It was always like a fifty.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Year old man had never used a broom.

Speaker 6 (10:23):
I waited for the dustbuster to be invented, and just
but that thing in and you got the battery operated.

Speaker 8 (10:27):
But you'd never been like in your garage and I
gotta sweep up real quick. You don't use a dustbuster
or like your mom says, a brush off the back deck.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
You grab the broom and just give it a sweet.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
If there's leaves or something, I'll open up the thing
and hope the wind eventually'll blow the leaves out there.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
Let nature and take its course, so I don't need
to do that.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
It's like you were just dropped on this planet.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
I couldn't cut the net with the scissors.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
I had a lot of pubt you. You didn't know
how to use scissors.

Speaker 5 (10:51):
Because they weren't lefty scissors. But that's besides the stop.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
I've never picked up scissors and go are these right
handed scissors?

Speaker 5 (10:57):
They make lefty scissors. It has to be a reason
for that.

Speaker 6 (10:59):
There's no excuse I should have figure out a way
to still cut it.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
It's still of all the things we've done on this show,
all the years we've been together, that might be a
top fiver for me that you did not know how
to use a.

Speaker 6 (11:12):
Bru There's a lot of very bright academics in the world,
and I'd like to consider myself one. As far as
at least I got good grades, that can't really society.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
I can't call you bright. You're not Stephen Hawking here.

Speaker 5 (11:26):
I did very well in school. But then when it
comes to.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
You to memorize things, todd you're memorize it. That doesn't
make you bright.

Speaker 5 (11:35):
I think I'm.

Speaker 6 (11:36):
Intelligent, I'm creative, But as far as you know, just
everyday life, I get confused real quick.

Speaker 5 (11:42):
How could a broom confuse you? Just look like, wait
a second, do I push Paul? Move with this one.

Speaker 7 (11:48):
We can't use left handed scissors as an excuse because
I'm left handed. Yeah, I know how to use scissors
because you're a person and he's got smaller hands than you.

Speaker 6 (11:58):
Come on, I thought about top it's hard to put things.
I was always bad with that. In my elementary school
art class.

Speaker 5 (12:06):
The line I never used a broom, I don't think
I did.

Speaker 6 (12:10):
I await missed the broom being obviously I didn't take
the copper notes about how to do it.

Speaker 5 (12:14):
I wasn't paying close up a time.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
And then Holy's birthday cake. You were cutting the cake
while the cake was still in the box.

Speaker 5 (12:21):
I've been known to make things more compatient.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
You and you destroyed the cake.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
Yeah, I made like a big snowball out of it.
I just kind of crashed.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Absolutely fascinating the work in progress for me.

He turns forty today, Nick Wright turns forty today. How
about a round of Happy Birthday for Nick Right? Happy,
Happy Birthday, Happy birthday, Nick.

Speaker 9 (13:01):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
You know, I didn't know what it would take to
be invited back on the show for the first time
in months, maybe more than a year, I'm not sure
at this point.

Speaker 9 (13:11):
But it took me, you know, becoming an old man
like you.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
So that you were you know, you were sick of
sick of talking to this young up and comer.

Speaker 9 (13:20):
And now that I'm just old and washed. It's fine,
I get it.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Well, you tell me that you prefer to go on
Colin Coward show. See, that's fine. Have you invited me
on your show on Fox Sports One.

Speaker 9 (13:34):
Open invite?

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Wait, but no, that's not that's not him. Tomorrow tomorrow, Okay,
tomorrow what time do I have to be there?

Speaker 4 (13:44):
Well, tomorrow's usually our show's three to five Eastern. Tomorrow
is three to four thirty because playoff baseball something takes it.

Speaker 9 (13:52):
Anytime you want, what time do you want to come on?

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Uh? You know what, I'm going to have to get
back to you because I have to travel into the city.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
Okay, well listen, this is sincere. If you would like
to come on the show, Yeah, I bet we can
send a car. If tomorrow doesn't work, we'll make it happen.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
So it's a different format of shows. I kind of hell,
you didn't have to invite yourself. I just don't know
how good your cowboys takes are.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
And that's a are you talking with you guys even
talk about Oklahoma State cowboys? I mean, any chance to
get in cowboys, Wyoming, Dooming cowboys.

Speaker 9 (14:30):
We just need it on the lower third.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
As long as it says cowboys, we can really see.

Speaker 9 (14:36):
That's the thing.

Speaker 4 (14:37):
You think we're always talking Dallas cowboys. But that's because
our show is probably on where you're at without the sound,
you're just seeing it. So you think we're talking cowboys,
We're actually talking about the racial politics of the WNBA,
we just have Dak Prescott into the lower third.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
In corn Well, I mentioned that though if shows could
somehow work the Lakers into DeVante Adams that and Caitlin Clark,
that they would somehow try to do that.

Speaker 9 (15:05):
Listen, man, it's a business.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
I know you're we're out here, we're out here talking,
you know, trying to capture the zeitgeist. If you want
to spend I don't know how much time you're spending
tonight on uh the Falcons tonight?

Speaker 7 (15:19):
What is it?

Speaker 4 (15:20):
Falcons Bucks tonight? Yeah, like, uh, you know, Kirk Cousins,
how you know, did how how much better as you
looked in week four from week one on the Achilles?

Speaker 9 (15:29):
You can do that.

Speaker 4 (15:30):
We're you know, we've carved out ninety seconds for that
on today's show. But I don't know if you've heard
Tyreek Kills flirting with the Chiefs again. So that's probably
going to be discussed on my on my television show.
And the Royals are gonna beat the Yankees, which is
gonna be.

Speaker 9 (15:45):
Terrible for me professionally but great for me personally.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Okay, that I think Baker Mayfield is an interesting storyline
because I agree we we got a larger sample size.
If I go back to last year, so twenty one games,
his stats are second best to Dak Prescott. If I
look at touchdowns, interception like he I think he's gotten

(16:08):
to the point where we have to recognize him as
he's a is he a very good quarterback? But he
I mean, he's certainly a good quarterback.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
He's definitively a good quarterback. And you did larger sample.
If you go to like week twelve of last year
and now, which is including the playoffs, maybe week thirteen,
it's like ten games, it's elite numbers, like truly elite
numbers across the board, rating yards, all of it. He
also has going for this the guys played four career

(16:40):
playoff games, has gone for three hundred plus or had
awesome games in three of them, even though they did
lose to you know, one of those ones that he
was awesome in, and his story kind of makes sense
to me. Awesome college player comes into Cleveland, is instantly good,
has maybe erupts sophomore season, then is awesome again, and

(17:03):
then his last year in Cleveland, Week one tears his
labram in his showing throwing arm.

Speaker 9 (17:10):
And is really bad.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
The rest of that year, and people were very quick
to kind of throw him out. Obviously he wasn't great,
and he wasn't even good in Carolina, seems like nobody is.
And now in Tampa has had a chance to be
rejuvenated a bit. He also has learned, in my opinion,
his biggest weakness early in his career was it felt
like he thought he was faster than he was, Like

(17:33):
it felt like he thought he was a better athlete
than he actually was, and so he would try to
escape and get run down. I also think there is
a we're seeing it with Baker. I don't really believe
in Darnald, but maybe with Donald. We've seen it in
other instances. The Gino Smith is a great example. The

(17:53):
veteran quarterback who gets the experience of being in the
league five, eight, ten years, but isn't thought of highly,
so he's not paid highly. So you get like the
rook not the rookie contract, but you get a cheap
quarterback but with all this experience, so you can then
have a bunch of great weapons around him that thus

(18:14):
far this season has been a very effective through line
for teams.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, and Sam Darnold, I still maintain that there has
to be a landing spot that makes sense for both
team and player. And Baker signed that deal. Yes, I
mean thirty thirty five million. That's that's a nice if
Mitch Trubisky should have taken that deal when he was
in Pittsburgh because now in Chicago he might still be

(18:40):
their quarterback. If he had had a it felt like, hey,
you're next up, so you got to get you know,
forty five to fifty million. Not everybody deserves fifty million,
sixty million.

Speaker 4 (18:52):
And so that's listen. You know, I'm a big Trevor
Lawrence guy. He's been brutal this year. The team's been bad,
and that contract is going to be an albatross. I
was worried to his contract was going to be an albatross.
There is there are some weird things happening with the
NFL salary structure where so listen, I know it's a

(19:12):
passing league, obviously it is, but it is it's weird
that the market. Someone had a tweet about this, I
think was Mina, and she's right. The market told us
that Alan Lazard brings as much value to a team
as Derrick Henry and no one bats an eye like
that's not correct.

Speaker 9 (19:31):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (19:31):
Like Derrick Henry gets ten million a year and people
are like, oh man, that's a lot for a wide receiver.
Christian Kirk gets fourteen, all right, a lot for running back.
Christian Kirk gets fourteen and nobody cares. So there is
that has touched the quarterback position as well, which is
Mahomes is worth one hundred a year, Josh Allen is
worth sixty a year.

Speaker 9 (19:52):
Lamar is worth fifty a year.

Speaker 4 (19:54):
I'm not sure where Dak is, but that neck Joe
Burrow's worth fifty a year. But that next group of
guys is not. And but it's just where the market
has moved to.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
He's nick right. He turns forty today.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
Happy birthday.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yeah, I was wondering about with this. Yeah, you were
going to say.

Speaker 4 (20:18):
I was just because you mentioned my age. Is the
only person on your staff younger than me?

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Marvin, Yeah, you guys are pretty close.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
I turned forty in April.

Speaker 9 (20:29):
Oh, be the youngest.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
I'm the youngest person in your in your kind of
you know area, in your team.

Speaker 9 (20:37):
Yeah, I'm on the team. Yes, say I'm on the team.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
Yeah, I mean you're invited to come in to the studio.
I got a basketball hoop, we got meat Friday tomorrow.
I mean a lot of things going on.

Speaker 4 (20:51):
Okay, well, okay, I will you know what, I'm going
to a home at home.

Speaker 9 (20:57):
That'll be great. It will be a series recuse Dayton
Home at Home. I can't wait for it.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
That is awesome. I was wondering about this with Andy
Reid since I knew we were going to have you on.
Andy Reid's genius to me is if you look at
the Chiefs game winning touchdowns in the playoffs, Super Bowl,
it's not the stars, correct, That's that's the brilliance of
you use Sky Moore, McCole, Harcole Hardman like. That to

(21:29):
me is the brilliance of Andy Reid. Uh Pacheco Like.
It's not the guys that you think are going to
score these touchdowns, but his ability to find those guys
and use them in the right moment at the right
you know, the right time.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
Well, and it's also so and we can kind of go,
you know, I can go a step further with it.

Speaker 7 (21:47):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (21:48):
The game ceiling play in the AFC Championship game was
a bomb to MBS who had dropped that ball all
year long. The they find had to give up on
Kadarius Tony, but Tony, they gave chance after chance after chance.

(22:08):
McCole Hardman, like right now the Chiefs running back in
wide receiver room because of injury. Here are the guys
Kareem Hunt Cleveland said we can't use you. Cleveland's no good,
samajp Ryan waived by the Broncos they stink. And Carson Steele,
whose NFL prospects were so grim when he was at

(22:30):
UCLA that his sister scheduled her wedding for a Saturday
for a Sunday in the fall in September, knowing he
was draft eligible, so his own family didn't believe in him.
The receivers are a rookie who I think is going
to be good, but Juju who the Patriots said we
can't use you, McCole Hardman, who the Jets said we
can't use you. And Justin Watson who went to.

Speaker 9 (22:50):
Penn and all year long.

Speaker 4 (22:54):
What the Chiefs they have the they have the benefit
of having this great young defense and Mahome who hasn't
played great this year, and because of that they can
all year long get these guys reps and opportunities and
involved in regular season games as opposed to we are
just going to rely on our stars and then in

(23:16):
the playoffs if someone can take one of those stars away.

Speaker 9 (23:19):
These guys have no experience with it.

Speaker 4 (23:22):
I think Andy is the people keep asking me what
would it take for me to worry about the Chiefs,
And even though they're four and oho and they asked
it last year and the enter as long as they
have Andy Patrick and the most underrated player in the sport,
Chris Jones, they are in better position than any other
team week after week after week.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Yeah, I agree. Before I let you go, the Knicks
took a big swing here with Karl Anthony Towns. It's
I don't know where I land on this right now.
I'm not a Julius Randall fan. Ball ends up in
his hands and it stays there. Devincenzo a lot of threes. Uh, yeah,

(24:03):
the Villanova connection. I just I don't know Carl Anthony
Towns if like he's yeah.

Speaker 9 (24:11):
I don't.

Speaker 4 (24:11):
I this was the I don't want to call it
a lose lose trade, but I don't know who won.

Speaker 9 (24:18):
And I'm a little confused by it.

Speaker 4 (24:20):
Minnesota's side of things, I just thought you could have
gotten more for Karl Anthony Towns and I don't love him,
but is he is a good to very good player.
He's an excellent offensive player, and the contract's you know,
a tough But I don't think Julius Randall is helpful
when it comes to winning a championship. And Minnesota just

(24:41):
came off the best year they've had in the history
of their franchise, or second best year, and they totally.

Speaker 9 (24:46):
Shake the snow globe.

Speaker 4 (24:47):
The Knicks, on the other hand, I thought made their
big move with Michale Bridges this track. I would have
wanted to see what it looks like with this group
before I then take this swing as well. Now I
understand why the Knicks. It's like, we gave up Randall,
who didn't seem to want to be here, only one

(25:08):
pick and Dante and we got the best player in
the trade. I don't think it's a bad move for
the Knicks, but it's a confusing one. I agree with
you entirely that it's like it just didn't It seemed
rushed when they didn't need to do it, and I
thought they would want to see what the Villanova crew
looks like together plus Og and Randall before they make

(25:31):
this drastic.

Speaker 9 (25:32):
Of a move. I'll say one other thing that this
signaled to me out West.

Speaker 4 (25:36):
The Timberwolves, right or wrong, no longer feel like, oh,
we have to build our team with Denver first and
foremost in mind. Like the Carl Anthony down to Rudy
Gobert combo was a really good combo to get through
the Nuggets to go off that to me, they're saying,
we don't look at Denver as this ultimate alpha that

(26:01):
we have to build, you know, in relation.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
To Yeah, and we see this a lot of times.
Teams are building their team because there's there's a championship
team that they know they have to go through. The
Lebron James comments and I'm paraphrasing like, don't have expectations
on our season.

Speaker 4 (26:19):
So I think those comments were I'm somewhat misinterpreted. I
think the more interesting comments he made were I have
nothing left to prove, which is Lebron I think trying
to set the conversation of I don't care what you
guys think. I think the goat debates over and when

(26:43):
he said it's all extra credit, he is he is
making it clear to everyone again people can disagree with
him that I'm the greatest player ever. That's that part's done.
So everything else I do from here is just to
see how far I can take it.

Speaker 9 (26:59):
And I know that'll make people mad.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
I know people will argue, but I happen to think
not only do I agree with Lebron on the merits,
I also agree with his sentiment, which is, you know,
it's election season. There aren't any undecided voters left in
this thing. And even if the Lakers won the title
this year, the Jordan folks would be like, oh, win

(27:21):
was five better than six. And even if they won
it this year and next year, they would be like, okay,
so it's six to six, but Jordan's got more MVPs
and never lost in the finals.

Speaker 9 (27:31):
Those people are not reachable.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
I'm not gonna call them deplorables, but they're somewhere in
that vicinity. And so I just don't I think Lebron
is saying, look at the record books. Every youngest ever record,
it says my name, and now every oldest ever record
it says my name, And so I think that's why
he said that. And as far as the expectations, I

(27:54):
just think he was saying it's a blank canvas.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
Well, it's almost like when Jordan went to the Wizard
and I you know, I don't know if there was
this oh my god, he's got to live up to
Eric Jordan. I think we were just happy that he
came back and he was playing. I don't remember expectation
levels where like, oh what a disappointment. It was no, Hey,
we get a chance to see Mike play a little
bit more.

Speaker 9 (28:17):
It's totally true now.

Speaker 4 (28:18):
I mean, I think some people and Jordan went to
the Wizards were like, maybe this is the year he
can prove he can play five hundred basketball without Scottie Pippen,
And of course he couldn't.

Speaker 9 (28:26):
But that's that's five season count.

Speaker 2 (28:29):
Can you say, can you say this one is a
has had a better career, one is a better player
with it?

Speaker 4 (28:37):
I mean, Mike understand the concept of what you're saying,
But the problem is you want me to say the
guy that was a better player is the guy who
is smaller, not as athletic, and a worst shooter.

Speaker 9 (28:51):
So no, I can't say that.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
I think I agree with the idea that you could.
You could say like Peyton Mann, Tom Brady, you know,
I mean one guy at his peak was better, but
the other guy clearly had a better career. I just
think Lebron's career is unimpeachably better, and I think Apex
versus Apex, Lebron was the better player. And so I

(29:16):
get the idea of it. I just don't subscribe to
the thinking of it.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
Well, it's like Aaron Rodgers is supposed to be the
most talented quarterback to ever play the position, but Tom
Brady is more decorated.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
Yeah, I know it exists across sports. Luckily, in basketball,
the most talented best is also the one who had
the best career. We're really fortunate in that space. Like, yeah,
so I just disagree with it on its merits. But again,
this is a great if you don't want to, if
you don't have a hot Cowboys.

Speaker 9 (29:50):
Take when you come on.

Speaker 4 (29:51):
First things first, we can do this for sure, we
don't do Listen the Lebron Jordan debate. I've said it before,
I'll say it again. It's like a pumpkin spice latte.
You don't want it every day, but a couple times
a year it hits the spot you just want to.

Speaker 9 (30:07):
You want to mix it in.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Once again, Happy birthday, sweet butterscotch. Yeah, mocha, Hey, happy
birthday and we'll talk.

Speaker 9 (30:20):
So I'll talk to you.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
That's Nick right. Great show in the afternoon on Fox
Sports One.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific

Speaker 2 (30:38):
Mike Tannenbaum, ESPN, NFL Front Office in Cider, former NFL GM.
You can see him on ESPN programs like Get Up
Sports Center, NFL Live. Good have Mike t back with us.
The Davante Adams situation. I guess the quote was he
preferred a trade. How does the player tell management that

(30:59):
he wants to be traded?

Speaker 10 (31:01):
Dan, great to be with you. As always, they walk in,
knock on your door, either them or they're agent. And
something that's really important though in twenty twenty four is
we saw it recently a couple of years ago with
Jalen Ramsey. He says, hey, I'm no longer a Jaguar
and he doesn't play until he's traded. So Devonte Adams
could hamstring could last a very long time. So you know,

(31:24):
in the past, maybe five ten years ago, you could
try to work things out. But I think the way
it is now with some of these A players, when
they decide on something, they do have leverage under the
rules to say they quote unquote can't play and they're
holding in, not holding out.

Speaker 2 (31:38):
Well, you bring up a great point with Davonte. He's
got the hamstring injury. Well, he's already said he wants
to play elsewhere. So if you're the Raiders, if he
even is cleared to play, are you going to play him? Yeah?

Speaker 10 (31:52):
Well, look I probably wouldn't because if I'm Antonino appears,
I'm in year one Dan of a massive rebuilt I
got to get the quarterback. I'd rather have a second
or third round pick, knowing that if I need it
to trade up in the draft to go get quarterback X,
that's probably better for us long term than having a
guy that's, let's face it, a great player, but clearly
much closer to the end and probably won't help us

(32:14):
in two to three years anyway.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Okay, Davante says the Jets are the Saints, Well, the
Raiders don't care who he wants to go to. How
does that work if all of a sudden you get
a better deal from New England and he doesn't want
to go there.

Speaker 10 (32:30):
I've been in that situation before, like, hey, look, we're
going to try to accommodate you, but we will do
what is best for the Las Vegas Raiders. So if
it's Team X, look we got to get the best
compensation we can. If it's the Jets, if it's the Saints,
as it's been reported as of the Derek car relationship, absolutely,
but we're not going to give you a way to
those teams because we also have an organization to run

(32:53):
and that's who my responsibility is to. So we will
be open, we will be transparent, but we are not
indiscriminately letting you walk to New York, you know, to
Aaron Rodgers for a six round pick him in. You
know what we gave up for you just two short
years ago.

Speaker 2 (33:06):
Is Tyreek Hill trying to flirt with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Speaker 5 (33:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (33:10):
I think Tyreek Hill's savvier than people realize. I think
he's saying all the right things and you want to
take care of your home base, which I think he's
done very well. He's been a great player for Miami. Obviously,
there was a bump in the road with what happened
a couple of weeks ago. But I think he hitled
that situation really well, and it looks like he's really
maturing as a player and as a person. I would

(33:31):
say he is being really pragmatic from a standpoint that. Look,
if I have a chance to go with a title
with Patrick Mahomes and I just got paid again, sure
I'll take my cake and eat it too. I just
would be hard pressed Dan to see Miami move on.
He's been a great player for them. They just paid him.
I just don't see them wanting to do that.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Okay, that brings us to the tooist situation. If you're
at the Dolphins GM. Now, once again we've said that
this is a business. We're looking at this from a
business perspective, trying not to be insensitive. But if you're
the Dolphins GM, do you is there any part of
you that says we have to look at moving on
from our quarterbacking position? Can we move on from our

(34:13):
quarterbacking position?

Speaker 10 (34:16):
I think you know, both things can be true. That
we believe in Tua. We also have to act in
a responsible way. Just give them what's happened. Obviously in
the last couple of weeks and earlier in his career,
and I think the best way to do that, Dan
candidly is probably next year's draft. I just think the
cost when you're paying a guy over fifty million a year,
I think it's really hard to bring in, you know,

(34:36):
fill in the blank, Garda Minshew, Joe Flacco and add
another ten million dollars of resources where you have obviously
a lot of other needs you want to address. So
to me, maybe it's a second round pick. You know,
I mentioned it last year. It's a little bit Apple starrages,
but similar like with Dak Prescott, like at that time,
Dak's setting into the last year of his deal. If
I'm Jerry Jones, I'm drafting Spencer Rattler in the second

(34:57):
or third round just to give me a little insurance.
And those second or third round quarterbacks stand are such
a value relative to the cap that to me, if
I'm Miami or another team that just Trevor Lawrence is
another one. Hey, I'm gonna start hedging, but I got
to hedge through the draft.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out. Do you think
the NFL wants to to be medically cleared?

Speaker 10 (35:20):
That's a simple question and complicated answer. First of all,
just for the audience. The last step for any player,
including to it to be clear to play, he has
to be cleared by an independent neurologist. I've been in
situations where a player went through the other four steps,
we got to a Saturday expecting the player would play,
had no setbacks, and an independent neurologist would clear a player,

(35:41):
which includes things like having contact at practice, having your
baseline tests compared to where it was in the spring.
So I think the league, ultimately Dan, they're going to
stand on we've changed our protocol and process and if
and when two is cleared, it's by a jointly appointed physician.
So be it the Dolphins or any other team. They're

(36:03):
not dealing with the issue of, hey, we're clearing a
player for our interests, not the players.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
I just can't imagine holding your breath, Mike for another
seventy games with TUA when you sign him to this deal.
And what are the odds that he'll never have another concussion?

Speaker 10 (36:20):
Yeah, I mean obviously those are very low. And that's
why to me like their next step is, look, when
he's played, he's played well, but dur Bill, he's been issued.
He played full season last year, Let's give him credit.
But beyond that, be it at Alabama or in the pros,
he's had issues. That's why I think Miami's next step
would probably be in the draft, because you're right, if
you and I were running a team, it wouldn't be
reasonable to think that he's going to play, you know,

(36:42):
seventeen games without another pump of the road.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Can you see a situation where and once again I
have no information on this. I did ask about this
yesterday with an NFL scout that maybe Shudor Sanders would say,
I'm not going to Carolina, Like, do you think we'll
see an Eli Manning situation with any of these quarterbacks
in the coming years?

Speaker 10 (37:06):
Absolutely? And here's why they have a lot more money.
You know, some of these guys are coming in with
eight figures worth of you know, nil deal or what
suon will be revenue share, and so you know, if
you have ten million dollars in your bank account, you're
going to comport yourself differently than if you're coming in
as someone that's just trying to make it economically. So
it's not going to be a lot of players, but

(37:26):
it's a sure Door Sanders certainly, and Arch Banning will
certainly come to mind, not just because of his lineage,
but presumably by all the money he's probably making at Texas.
So when these higher profile quarterbacks are working their way
through the system, without question, Look, Caleb Williams didn't do that.
He probably had the stature if he wanted to for
whatever reason. Hey, I don't want to be a bear.

(37:48):
He may have been able to do it economically.

Speaker 2 (37:51):
And I wonder about this being a former GM. They're
getting paid now, they're professionals in college and they have money.
So does that help you when you're drafting these quarterbacks
of maturity level or you know, they they understand finances
a little bit more. They're not going to go out

(38:11):
and blow their money on you know, Amaserai as soon
as they get there. Does that help in drafting somebody
when you feel like they got a little bit of
a head start in that category.

Speaker 10 (38:23):
Yes, But here's the character that dan I've talked to
a lot of people at the league about this. Here's
what we don't know. And Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels
are just the most recent examples when quarterbacks transfer that
used to be a big red flag. Obviously the world's
different now, but when you've only had adulation and been
able to move situations when you weren't happy, that doesn't

(38:45):
happen in the NFL. So if in one Caleb Williams
has a four game losing streak, he's not going to
be able to go from the Bears to the Packers
and to be able to have the mental toughness and
the resiliency. You know, when you talk to Parcels about
Phil Simms as reviews and what it was like to
develop a quarterback in New York or Eli Manning early on,
like they had a mental toughness that is rare, and

(39:07):
that's something we don't know about these young quarterbacks and
we're going to learn, I think, both good and bad
in the coming years on especially the guys that have transferred,
and how they handle criticism and how they handle hard
coaching when things aren't going well.

Speaker 2 (39:21):
Good stuff, Mike, great to talk to you again.

Speaker 10 (39:23):
Thank you all right, Dan, appreciate it.
