Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's a meet Friday hour two Dan and the Dannet's
Dan Patrick Show down to Danette. Pauli's off for the weekend.
But the grills are fired up, and so are we.
Smoked baby back ribs, bourbon, baked beans, cornbread. Who has
it better than we do?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Nobody?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
I like that stat of the day brought to you
by Panini America. The official trading cards of this program.
Calendars are available. In fact, during the commercial breakout there
autographing the twenty twenty five calendars. The DP show available
Danpatrick dot com. Also you're going to see some Foliage
flannels out there on the website. There gorgeous eight seven
(00:43):
seven to three DP Show email address VP at Danpatrick
dot com, Twitter handle a DP show. We had a
lot of poll questions, suggestions everybody. It was a collaborative
effort with Paulie not being here seat and I don't
know what we went with in hour one, but what
are we going to go with in hour Too.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Many many pole questions we have up there. Who do
you want to win tonight? Jake Paul or Mike Tyson?
Right now, ninety five percent of the audience have Mike Tyson.
Who do you think will win tonight? Right now, sixty
percent of the audience have Mike Tyson. Okay, it's a
pretty serious drop off, but yes, and I thought it
(01:22):
would be. And once again, Jake Paul doesn't care if
you hate him. He wants you to pay to hate him.
He wants you to watch the fight. That's all he
cares about. And yes, is he a social influencer? Has
he handpicked his opponents? Yes, we know all of this.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
It's unfortunate that this is what boxing has become because
boxing used to be well, I mean, it's generational, but
you can go back to the nineteen hundreds and the
importance of being the heavyweight champ of the world. I
don't know when it's stopped. And there had to be
a confluence of the UFC, the rise of star power
(01:59):
and UFC and then all of a sudden and I
don't know if you have boxers who want to be
UFC stars, and I certainly understand that, but it just
felt like being the heavyweight champ of the world just
didn't mean as much. And I don't know when that.
Ariel Hilwani, who was hosting the press conference yesterday with
(02:20):
Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will join us, and maybe
he could tell us sort of when that decline started
to happen, what else? What are we going to go
with an hour two Seaton.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Well, it's a big undertaking because it's such a great question.
But the best one hit wonder in sports, We've got
so many options for it. Don Larson's perfect game buster,
Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson, Malcolm Butler's Super Bowl interception,
David Tyree's helmet catch. Twitter has got a bunch of
them there too. So who else did Twitter suggest? Let
(02:51):
me find some of those tweets for you.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Because what happens is you don't realize it until somebody
says and you go, oh, that's right, or yep, that's right.
Mean Malcolm Butler, that is at one hit wonder. Yeah,
Don Larson. I think the headline the next day was
the imperfect man throws the perfect game. And you know
he wasn't a great pitcher, but he threw a perfect
(03:13):
game in the World Series. Yes, I feel like Malcolm Butler.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
As great as that play was, it gets taken down
a couple of notches because almost everyone universally agrees that place.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Shouldn't have happened. Why the hell did you throw the ball?
Speaker 4 (03:26):
It's almost like that, how terrible the play call was,
how it shines, how great the play actually was.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, David Tyree, you never had another catch. That's the
stupidest thing ever, that one. It's never happened in the
history of the NFL, and it happens in the super
Bowl and leads to a Super Bowl win. That's going
to put Eli Manning in the Hall of Fame and
put Tom Coughlin in the Hall of Fame. Yes, Mark, he.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Caught a touchdown pass early in that game too.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
People forget yeah see, and you like, if you just
say the helmet catch, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
You don't have to say anything else. The helmet catch.
Buster Douglas. I don't know what he did after knocking
out Mike Tyson, but that's how big that punch was.
That was crazy. Yeah, And it wasn't even in the
United States, which made it even more of a are
you sure that happened? And the time of day that
(04:24):
it happened in Japan, you're going wait, wait, Tyson got
knocked out. Yeah, Buster, Doug Buster Douglas. Yeah, seen.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
And I remember I was young at the time, but
being up and just we're there. Our conversation was how
long will this guy last? That was the whole point
of like, let's see how fast Tyson can knock this
guy out.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
It goes back to Mike. Tyson's m O was if
he doesn't get you early, you'll get him late. And
his losses were to actual boxers. If if Mike got
a chance, and he's going to take you out in
the first round, and if he he didn't take you out,
then all of a sudden, the longer it went, the
odds were not in his favor. I don't know, you
(05:06):
know what he has left. I like that there are
two minute rounds instead of three minute rounds. There's eight
rounds here. But I don't underestimate Jake Paul. I think
he is a brilliant businessman. I do because he has
made a whole lot of money and no one, no
one gave him any credit, any really thought that that guy.
(05:29):
He's kind of a side. He's been hand picking his
opponents and he's lost once. But he has shown that
he can handle himself in the ring. Now what I
want to see Mike Tyson shut him up? Yeah, I would.
I just don't want Mike knocked out, that's it. I
don't want him on the ground, on the canvas. I
(05:50):
don't want him looking for his mouthpiece. I mean, worst
case scenario that it goes the distance and Mike loses
by decis I'd be fine with that. I just don't
want Jake Paul to beat up a tiring Mike Tyson,
you know, in the fifth round. Let me get a
couple of phone calls in here, Aiden in Utah, Hi, Aiden,
(06:13):
what's on your mind today?
Speaker 5 (06:16):
Yeah? And hell the hockey club picked up another win
last night? Yeah, yeah, I was. I agree with you.
I think Jake called it. I think he's a great businessman.
I think he's a decent fighter. But I just don't
see what he gets out of this fight. Either he
wins and that what he says, oh it was fake,
it was rigged, or he wins and they said you
beat up at fifty eight year old man, or you
(06:38):
lose and that he said, you lost him an eighty
five year old Mike Tyson. So I don't know what
he gets out of this.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
He gots a lot of money. He gets a lot
of money. I mean, he's been tricking people into buying
his fights and then he'll handpick somebody. After this, when
he was asked about, Hey, when are you going to
actually fight somebody your age and your weight class, he
dismissed the reporter Luke and Charlotte. Hi, Luke, welcome back.
What do you have for me?
Speaker 6 (07:04):
Hey Dan, Happy Friday to you guys. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Turn down your radio? Turned down your radio?
Speaker 6 (07:11):
Sorry about that? Is there music in the background?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Was there?
Speaker 6 (07:15):
I was just wanted to kind of make a point
that I think it's time to stop really talking about
the Steelers as like a flukra or a bad offense.
It's having a couple of good weeks. I think they
look really good.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Wait, wait, who's saying that, Luke?
Speaker 6 (07:29):
I mean, I'm not saying you in general, but I
mean there's there's been this vibe around the Steelers really
for the past three years that you know, their offense
is terrible.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
And well that was true though, right, Wasn't it good?
They fired their offensive coordinator, they got rid of their quarterback.
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Yeah, yeah, but and I just don't know if they've
really gotten the full credit of Russell Wilson.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Good, Okay, Luke. He's only been playing in three games,
and he has thrown the ball up a couple of
times in his receiver have gone up and saved him.
I don't know if it's the second coming of the
Greatest Show on turf.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Yeah, see, yeah, I mean, I don't think it's wrong
to question the Steelers coming into this season when they
had two quarterbacks and not one, and both of them
had been run out of their previous towns. One of
them had run out of the last two towns that
they were quarterbacking in. I don't think it's that crazy
to be like, I don't know if I really buy
into this yet.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
I think that Russell Wilson is a good story, But
I don't know if I look at this and say
that they can outscore people. It still comes down to
Mike Tomlin's teams or run the football, play good defense,
and win close games. And I was thinking about this
with the Chiefs and the Bills because Butcker is out.
(08:49):
He's injured for the Kansas City Chiefs going into this game,
so he's up there as one of the top three
kickers in the league. I wonder if Kansas City is
now on fourth down when they have a chance, let's
say for a fifty yard field goal, that they'll actually
go for it. Now that I don't know if this
(09:11):
changes their offense against Buffalo and I I just it
came to me this morning coming in that without him,
and he's such a weapon that you just get into
field goal range and then you don't worry about it.
And this is going to be a close game, or
it's expected to be a close game. Now does Kansas
City not go for the field goal? But they go
(09:33):
for it on fourth and two, fourth and three? Keep
drives live. Maybe they score more points because they're going
to be more aggressive knowing that every time they get
the ball in a certain portion of the field, it's
going to be four down territory. So you imagine mahomes
with four downs instead of three. Just something to factor in.
(09:55):
Jim in Ohio, Hi Jim, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 6 (09:58):
Good morning, Dan, Dan, Who do you think can topple
the Kansas City Chiefs and who in the AFC is
the biggest threat to do that?
Speaker 5 (10:07):
What do you think?
Speaker 7 (10:09):
Well?
Speaker 2 (10:09):
I would say Buffalo. Buffalo does well during the regular season.
They had him last year during the postseason, couldn't knock
them off. I thought the Ravens got out of their
game plan last year. I mean the Ravens should have
won that game. But you know, I give credit to
Kansas City. They win these games. It's just if you
have them, you must kill them. You cannot. You can't
(10:33):
let Mahomes keep breathing and Andy Reid, Chris Jones. You
just can't. But do I think Buffalo can? You know,
they don't seem as formidable because they don't have weapons.
They have Josh Allen and you'd be hard pressed to
name if you're not in Buffalo, other so called weapons.
(10:54):
I mean they have a couple of tight ends. You
know they have a good running game, but you don't go, wow,
they can light up. Think Baltimore can score points? They
would be the big threat. I don't think the Texans
are great this year. You're gonna win your division because
somebody has to. Now, can they be dangerous in a
one off? I guess. But if you start to think
(11:16):
who's really good? The fact that the Dolphins, Bengals, and
Broncos are playoff worthy playoff contention, Steelers. Can the Steelers
do an? Can they do enough and Kansas City's undefeated'
So the Kansas City is going to be hosting these games,
(11:36):
or at least that's what it certainly looks like.
Speaker 8 (11:38):
Yes, Mark, Yeah, you're gonna need a team to stay
on the field, run the clock like a good defense,
just keep mames off the field. They got to control
the time possession for sure.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
And that's where you have the running game. You know,
you have these teams that are able to run the football.
And Saquon Barkley, he rushed for one hundred and forty
six yards, so he's had six one hundred yard games
this season. Is a career high is seven. That was
his rookie season. And this is a different Philadelphia team
because you must acknowledge Saquon Barklay and then that makes
(12:11):
Jalen Hurts more dangerous. You've got really good wide receivers,
you've got a good tight end, you got a better
a better defense than you saw coming into this season.
When your back end is rookies and they're holding their own,
that's impressive. And it's weird like Nick Sirianni went from
(12:31):
I don't know to I don't know, like he might
be the coach of the year. Here is Nick Sirianni
after the win last night against the Commanders.
Speaker 9 (12:42):
Was great tonight, but that offensive line was really good.
You know, even even on Saquon's touchdown, we got we
got the receivers running off on that play. Smithy's running off,
AJ's running off to that side where he's able to
you know, that's effort. Uh, And I think our guys
have been playing with extreme effort, and good things happen
when you're again when you're doing those things.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Okay, everything's good, yes, Martin.
Speaker 3 (13:07):
For now, there's plenty of time to mess it up.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Do we have the Eagles schedule and the Commander's schedules.
So the Commanders they have the Saints, they have the Titans,
and they have the Cowboys. I believe those are the
next three games for them. Now if they go three
and three, are they in? Who do they have after that? Marvin,
(13:31):
I'll check it.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
Hold on, they got let's see coming up next to
the Commanders have Dallas, Tennessee, New Orleans Eagles Falcons and
then at Dallas.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Hmm, okay, okay, what about the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
It's weird.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
That's like a schedule full of what looked like tough games.
But then when you look at records.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Yeah, but I think it just feels like Dallas is
going to do They're going to spoil something for somebody.
Now they've already spoiled their season. But I at some
point I would just put Trey Lance in there and
just say, you know what, let's see if you gave
up a fourth round pick, Let's just see if he
can do anything. He's you know what you have in
(14:16):
Cooper Rush. He's thirty one. You know exactly who you have,
Trey Lance. Throw him in there. He's not a rookie.
Throw him in there. Let's see if he can revitalize this.
Speaker 10 (14:26):
Yes, don the Eagles are at the Rams, They're at
the Ravens. They host the Panthers, host the Steelers, back
with the Commanders in DC, they host the Cowboys, and
then they host the Giants.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Okay, but that game against the remch So the Rams
play New England in New England. Yeah, and that that's
a weird game. You just lost at home. You'll cross country.
You're probably playing a one o'clock game against the Patriots.
And let me see what's the point spread on that
the Rams. The Rams are favored by four and a
(15:01):
half against the Patriots. If they would lose that game,
you come back home and you got the Eagles coming,
Like we thought they were sellers at the trade deadline
leading up and then they ended up winning a couple
of games. Now all of a sudden, you're like, they
could win the division and then you could get back
to that. Wow, what's going to happen in the offseason
(15:23):
with this team? Like it's that kind of tenuous here, Yes, Todd,
the Rams have.
Speaker 10 (15:30):
To play the Bills, the Niners, the Cardinals, Seattle. There's
some decent teams there.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Yeah, for the rest of the year.
Speaker 8 (15:35):
Yeah, yeah, Mark, But in the NFL, isn't that what
kills your season when you lose the teams that you
shouldn't lose to.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Isn't that always the case?
Speaker 8 (15:43):
Like, Okay, the Jets when they lost to the Broncos,
is like, all right, Sala's losing his job because those
are the games you're not supposed to lose. Those costs
playoff spots and jobs.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Yeah, well, they shouldn't have lost to the Dolphins. They
are at home Monday night and now you play the Patriots.
You should win this game. But yeah, that's where it
gets tricky when all of a sudden you're a no
man's land and then all of a sudden, you got
like five games to go? Now, what do you do?
All right, let me take a break. Ariel Helwane was
(16:12):
right there. He was right there for the slap. He
was hosting the Jake Paul Mike Tyson. That wasn't away
and that was just a Hey, let's get together and
hype this fight one more time.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
What you're gonna do in holcoming.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
So we'll talk to Ariel Heelwanie. There also the most
must win game of the weekend, and the NBA writer
Brian Windhorst will join us. We'll talk to him about
a couple of things, including Bronnie not playing on the
road in the G League. Back after this Dan Patrick show.

and a reporter for Mike Tyson Jake Paul Fight. Tuned
in all of a sudden, I see my guy on stage.
(17:11):
He's there asking questions. Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. Ariel
Helwani joining us on the program. Uh, let's start with
the slap. Your reaction when you saw it.
Speaker 11 (17:22):
Well, first of all, thank you so much, Dan. I
can't believe I'm one of your guys. This is a
massive honor for me. It's always great to talk to you.
Always a huge thrill. And uh, yeah, I was there
yesterday at the UH at the WANs. You know, there's
been a lot of talk about who this version of
Mike Tyson is, what we're going to see tonight, what
this is all about. You've been around for a long time,
(17:43):
You've seen the many different versions of Mike. That was
That was nineteen nineties version of Mike. You know, he
may be fifty eight, but that demon, that beast never
goes away. And when Jake walked up to him like that,
and as we found out later, stepped on his toe,
that guy comes back. He cannot control it. That was noted,
That was not fake, That was not any of that.
And I'll tell you this, the look on his face
(18:05):
as I was trying to interview him afterwards, and I was.
I was standing, you know, as far away as possible,
like I was holding a piece of meat trying to
feed a lion. I have never seen that look on
a human beings face. Forget fighter, I have never seen
that look on a human beings face. For I've never
been in a Tyson broadcast before. That was terrifying stuff.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
But also you have a lot of people are skeptical
about this is it real? You have Mike who's thirty
years older than Jake Paul. Jake Paul is you know,
I guess a professional boxer. When will we know this
is a real fight that will put to rest that
you know is scripted.
Speaker 11 (18:43):
This is one hundred percent of real fight. And look,
I'm not a part of the promotion. I don't work
for the promoter. I have the great opportunity to work
for Netflix tonight. It's a huge deal. It's probably going
to be the most watched combat sports event of all
time by the time everything is said and done. Mike
Tyson doesn't do fake he doesn't play fight. In fact, afterwards,
I spoke to his son, Emir Tyson, who's part of
the broadcast as well, and the look on his face
(19:06):
was so telling as well kept. He was pacing back
and forth because this is the first time he really
gets to see his father in this sort of light
and on this platform. He was so young when Mike
was fighting. He said, people don't understand. He doesn't do
YouTube boxing, he doesn't do this fake stuff. This is
a different type of human being. He is wired differently.
There's a demon inside of him that he just can't
switch off, regardless of his age. And so ultimately, look,
(19:29):
I will be honest. When I first heard about this,
I felt the same way, and I still feel the
same way as everyone else. A fifty eight year old
historically does not fight and shouldn't be sanctioned to fight.
I have no idea what we are going to witness,
what this is all going to look like. But Mike
Tyson isn't coming to play. It may mean that he
lasts thirty seconds in there, but there is nothing scripted
about what we're going to see tonight.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Besides the money, What is Jake Paul gain by fighting
Mike Tyson?
Speaker 11 (19:53):
A lot of fame, a lot of attention. Jake Paul
likes to be the heel and if you don't know
what that term means, that's say pro wrestling term the
bad guy. He likes the idea of everyone saying, poor
Mike is being you know, fed to the lions. He's
being led to slaughter. Oh he's fifty eight. How dare you,
Jake Paul talk about knocking him out in the year
twenty twenty four and saying that you're now the baddest
(20:15):
man on the planet. You're not the baddest man on
the planet if you knock out a fifty eight year
old Mike Tyson. But he he loves that heat. He
wants that heat, and he's got grandiose plans after this fight.
He wants to fight Canelo Alvarez. And by the way,
I'm not going to say that that's not gonna happen,
because every step of the way people have been saying
these things aren't going to happen, and they're happening because
of the money that's attached to Jake Paul right now,
(20:35):
because of the platform. Netflix is getting into this because
it's Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson, not just because it's
the Mike Tyson Show. It's the two of them. And look,
I have kids who are twelve and ten. They think
and I try to explain to them. They think Jake
Paul is Muhammad Ali. To them, boxing is Jake Paul.
And then there's my age who are like, please tell me,
(20:56):
Mike is gonna shut this kid up. And so what
makes this so fascinating is the generational clash between the
forty fifty sixty year olds and the ten twenty year olds.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
I've been telling my audience that I met Mike in
nineteen eighty six. I was there for Marvus Fraser. I
was there for Michael Spinkx. I think I saw between
six and eight of his fights. And the look when
he comes into the ring is the look that you're
talking about. It's my car is running. I'm going to
kick your ass and then I'm going to leave and
go party. And Mike had that moment yesterday. I didn't
(21:29):
know if he was capable of that. During the commercial,
we play archival footage and interviews and Mike in twenty seventeen,
I talked to him and I said, who do you
want a piece of? He goes, oh, I don't want
to fight anybody anymore. But I don't know what it
took to get him financially. Is he is he okay? Ariel.
Speaker 11 (21:47):
My understanding is, yes, the turnaround in his life. You know,
there was a period pre Hangover and all that where
he was obviously in a tough spot. I think the
Hangover the movie, Yeah, yes, movie, excuse me, yes, the
movie did wonders. I mean, we forget that this man
went to prison, convicted rapist, and it's just been sort
of forgotten about. Like the transformation and the comeback is remarkable,
(22:11):
and I think a lot of that credit goes to
his wife, Kiki, who helped get him back on the
right path, so to speak. And so he's fine, and
he's making a boatload of cash. He will be okay.
There's one moment in that Countdown series that aired on
Netflix that I can't stop thinking about. He's watching Jake
Paul call him out after his last fight, and he
looks to the camera and he goes the difference between
me and him is that he's a manufactured killer. TV
(22:34):
made him into a killer. I'm a natural born killer.
And I get chills just saying that, because you know
Mike better than me and better than most. This guy's
different and to see that version of him in twenty
twenty four, I'd love to ask you, if I may,
How do you feel about this? You saw Mike in
his prime fifty eight. You shouldn't be fighting, but he's
a different kind of cat. Do you feel some sort
(22:55):
of way about it? Do you feel uncomfortable? Are you excited?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
Yeah. I just don't want him embarrassed. I just don't
want that because then you're gonna have a whole generation
of going, what's the big deal about this guy? You
know he's thirty years older, this guy is in his prime.
I even asked Mike, I said, how would this go
if you were twenty seven? And he said it wouldn't
go well for him. We know that he wouldn't get
(23:21):
in if they were both twenty seven. Jake Paul would
be in a corner, hiding and probably in a fetal position.
I just don't want Mike to be you know, when
Buster Douglas knocked him down, and we see this with
a lot of people, Once you get defeated, and certainly
in UFC and in boxing, if you lose that one time,
(23:43):
you lose that invincibility, like it's gone now. And when
Mike got knocked down by Buster, all of a sudden,
he wasn't the baddest man on the planet. And the
longer that you had him in the ring, the more
susceptible he was. Because he's not a great boxer, he's
an unbelievable you know puncher and holy Field could beat him,
(24:04):
and Lennox Lewis can beat him. You know, all these guys,
I'll string you out. But Mike, when he got in
the ring and what he did when he got in
there was unlike anything we'd ever seen. And I just
hope worst case scenario Ariel is it goes the distance
and he loses, you know, by decision. Like if that happens, great,
(24:25):
Now don't do it anymore, Mike, because I'm worried he's
going to be calling out Lennox Lewis and go hey
or holy Field again, Like I don't. I don't want that,
and boxing shouldn't be that like it When did it dip?
When did UFC? You know, there was an intersection and
then all of a sudden, UFC took off and then
boxing just became a secondary sport. Can you look back
(24:48):
on when it maybe it happened.
Speaker 11 (24:51):
It's been a slow build. I will say around the
time of UFC one hundred with brock Lesner and whatnot.
The UFC really took a big step when they did
the deal with Fi Box in twenty twelve. Huge twenty eighteen,
they do the deal with the ESPN Gigantic. The pandemic
helped the UFC tremendously. But if I can offer this,
I would love to just say that I hear a
lot of people, especially in sports media, and I'm not
(25:13):
certainly talking about you here, but I hear a lot
of people kind of coming after me and saying this
is a referendum on the state of boxing ruined and
soiled by this event. First of all, these people aren't
watching a lick of boxing each and every week on Dezone,
on ESPN, on Amazon Prime. They couldn't care less about boxing,
So spare me your thoughts on the state of boxing.
(25:33):
I do have a newsflash for everyone. Boxing is doing
actually tremendously well. There is a litany of big stars.
We just had an undisputed heavyweight title fight in May,
We're getting a second one in December, Tyson Furray, Alexander Ussig,
there's not Oya Na in Japan, and Terrence Crawford, and
on and on.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
It goes.
Speaker 11 (25:47):
Boxing is doing just fine, and if you care so
much about the sanctity of boxing, please do me this favor.
Watch the rest of this card because the co main
event is Katie Taylor versus Amanda Serrano, the two greatest
female boxers of all time, arguably Katie Taylor twenty twelve
Olympic gold medalist. They had a fight in Madison Square
Garden in twenty twenty two, one of the greatest fights
that I've ever seen live in person, male or female,
(26:09):
one of the greatest spectacles. They're running it back tonight
in the co main event. So if you care so
much about boxing, do me a favor and watch them
as well, because they deserve this attention platform too.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Yeah, you're gonna get a lot of those people, almost
like Caitlin Clark with the WNBA. People never watch the WNBA,
and then they're only watching and now they have a
referendum on the WNBA. So exactly, I understand what you're saying.
Who do you think wins tonight?
Speaker 11 (26:33):
Well, you know, Dan, I consider myself a broadcast journalist.
I'm from the great new House School of Syracuse University,
and when you're working a broadcast, you try to abstain
from making a pick because I know Mike is a
big fan of yours, and I don't want him to
be watching this right now and saying, oh, you're the
guy who picked against me. As I'm doing the post
fight interview in the cage like my or excuse me,
(26:56):
in the ring, like my hero Howard Cosell would do
back in the day, I'm I'm going to sit this
one out. I will say the winner tonight will be
the fans two hundred and eighty million subscribers, most watched
sporting event as far as combat sports is concerned, and
it's just a massive honor for me to be a
small part of it.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
And will the sunlight have any effect on the boxing
tonight in Dallas.
Speaker 11 (27:17):
Well, the main card kicks off part of the pun
at seventh Central. It's getting dark pretty early these days,
so by the time these guys walk out, it'll be
around oh nine nine thirty or so Centro, So I
would say, not.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
Good luck, have fun, Thank you, Yes, keep keep your
question short, open ended, before and after get them talking.
That's what you want.
Speaker 11 (27:43):
That means the world to me.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Thank you so much, truly, I really appreciate it all.
Right ERL. Thank you. Ariel Hellwane, host of The Errol
Helwane Show's been a guest many many times talking about
UFC and also new Combat Sports Hubcrowned dot com. You know,
you get in those moments and all of a sudden,
you know, game ends, boxing match ends, and you're there
(28:07):
and all of a sudden, here's the winner. And then
you got to start asking questions and then you have
no you know, I mean, Jim Gray is better than
anybody who's ever done it when he's in the ring,
because and Larry Merchant was wonderful too. Like they get
in there and you got to kind of push people
out of the way, and somebody's carrying the belt, and
somebody's yelling and screaming, and somebody could be parachuting into
(28:28):
the boxing ring like chaos expected chaos, and you got
to somehow get up there to that fighter and then
ask a question. Now, I never did anything in the ring,
none of that. And even when NBA after a championship,
you come in, you know, there's fifteen twenty minutes before
(28:51):
you're coming in. The super Bowl is probably the closest
where game ends. Podiums up here you go here's the trophy.
Now you're asking questions. This is right up and these
guys are really trying to kill each other, and you
know for them, they can't turn that off. You don't
just dial let me dial down the volume. I wanted
(29:12):
to take his head off. Hold on, Okay, what's the
question you'd like to ask me? Yes, Marvin, Yeah. How
insane is it when there's somebody in your ear? You
have an IFB, you have an earpiece, like, would you
guys shut up for.
Speaker 8 (29:24):
Five seconds so I can hear what's going on because
there's so much especially after like the Super Bowl and
Europe on stage and you're up on the podium and
you're like, wait, what, who's the MVP? And somebody talking
in one ear? How chaotic?
Speaker 2 (29:35):
Like?
Speaker 3 (29:35):
How do you try to manage?
Speaker 2 (29:36):
It's one of the toughest things that you have to
learn in this business that you'll wear an ear piece,
and if you're on the set, I mean all the
broadcasters use it, and your producer can talk to you,
maybe your director, but normally it's your producer who's going
to say, hey, one more question, go to break. I'm
(29:56):
there all of those super Bowl moments where I'm handing
out the trophy with the commissioner. So there's rough estimate
of one hundred million people watching. Everybody in the stadium
is watching, and I can hear my producer. Now, it's chaos.
There's movement, there's there's people yelling, there's celebrating, and so
you really rely on that producer. And I had a
(30:20):
really calm producer at NBC, very very good did the Olympics.
He was very calm and speaking to me. So it
calms you down. You don't want somebody going, you know,
all right, three questions and that's it. You asked Belichick
and then you got to get to Tom and then
you know it's not it's mister Kraft. You'll have Belichick
(30:41):
for two. You're going to get Tom and Edelman is
up there as well. Then you'll throw it back to
Bob and the booth. I mean, that's what it is.
So you're almost being led, like you can ask one
more question. Don't let him have the microphone. Don't don't
don't give up the microphones. So that happened twice to
me on the podium live in front of a hundred
(31:03):
million people, where the owner of the Giants, owner of
the Eagles and even the pet and Robert Kraft grabbed
the microphone, so they want to do like hey everybody.
I'm like, no, no, no, we don't do that. I got
two questions and you're pulling on the microphone. I know,
I got Brady over here. I got to get to Belichick.
(31:24):
You know, there's all this, there's a time crunch there.
You got like seven or eight minute, nine minutes, whatever
it is, and then throw it back to Bob Costas
and when you're done, you have no idea what just happened.
Now zero first time I did it in Tampa and
I walked off the field and you know, you have
(31:44):
the Steelers and the Cardinals, and I'm like, I don't
know what I just did, but I hope I did okay.
And I went back to the trailer and I just
sat there. No one else was in there, everybody else
was still working, and I'm walking through the confetti on
the football field and I'm like, I just handed out
the super Bowl trophy and I just sat one of
(32:06):
the you know, highlights of my career. You're there for
the Super Bowl trophy and I just sat there and
I went, God, I wish my dad was still alive.
That was it, But it was so it was such
a frenetic pace, and I here like trying to make sense.
I don't even know what I asked Tom Brady. I
(32:27):
don't know what. I don't want what Belichick said, you know,
any of those things. But you know Ariel is going
to get in the ring after that, you know, boxing match,
and you know hopefully both fighters are able to talk,
and you're going to try to make sense of all
of that, and chances are you got to prepare to
be unprepared for what's going to happen. Chances are, all right,
(32:49):
let me take a break. We'll get phone calls coming up,
update the poll results as well. Top of the hour,
Brian Windhorst will join us the Great NBA Rider. We're
back after this.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
Be sure to the live edition of The Dan Patrick
Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Let's Slide into the Weekend brought to you by Kingsawaiian.
They want you to get together with family and friends
enjoy the weekend by making every Sunday Slider Sunday NFL
Ravens Steelers. This is the best rivalry in the NFL.
You have Lamar Jackson, so you have the leading candidate
(33:29):
for MVP, leading candidate for Defensive Player of the Year.
So Lamar Jackson and TJ want what chiefs At the Bills,
Mahomes is an underdog. Uh oh, He's eleven and three
as an underdog Bengals at the Chargers, Cincinnati's four and six.
Somehow they're still alive. It felt like every week the
(33:50):
last three weeks and must win situation for them. Joe
Burrow leads in most passing categories here, and so the
Bengals have maybe the best quarterback statistically passing. You got
Jamar Chase leads the NFL and receiving yards, and they
also have the leader in sacks, Trey Hendrickson. They're four
(34:15):
and six Tennessee and Georgia. It is a playoff game
for both of these teams. Number seven versus number twelve,
Missouri versus South Carolina. I like that South Carolina's in
the rankings. A winning SEC record would be South Carolina's
first since twenty seventeen, just the second time since twenty thirteen.
(34:38):
And I'm thinking about you, Darius Rucker, with your game
Cocks here because nobody loves loves the Game Cocks quite
like Darius Rucker does. Can South Carolina get another win
here with the big season? And you know what, Paulie
is not here today. At your Slider Sunday brought to
you by the great folks at King Sawaiian. You can
slider Sunday your way. There's no wrong way for a
(34:58):
slider Sunday. He was thinking of pea bomb since Paulie's
not here. His pea bombs have not done well the
last couple of weeks. How about this for a pea
bomb this weekend? Does BYU play Kansas? Is that right? Marvin?
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Looking right now? Hold on, okay, yeah, Kansas.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
I'm calling Kansas for the upset? Whoa six Jhawks? Yeah,
I'm gonna call it.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Really yeah, Basketball?
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Is this a DP bomb? It's a DP bomb?
Speaker 3 (35:38):
All right?
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Yeah, I'm gonna call it. By the way, Speaking of
gambling and bad picks, Dan Patrick takes a gamble that's
available at danpatrick dot com. Wild Wild Episode Yesterday, Crazy
Episode Yesterday, Shay and Irving, Dylan the graphicsky bad Larry.
What made it so crazy? D I'll say Shane and
(35:59):
Irving It always starts there, something happened to him with
his wife out of town, and he now has to
go to come home counseling. I'm not sure why I'm laughing,
but the way he tells it, it's funny.
Speaker 8 (36:16):
Yes, Marvin, Hey, during that podcast, we might have a
fight of our own Bad Larry, Oh yeah, versus Ray.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Bad Ray, Bad Larry against Pa Ray and they, I
guess are talking about fighting because Ray is around the
same age as Jake Paul and bad Larry is a
few years older than Mike Tyson. So Bad Larry said
that he would kick Ray's ass, and I think we're
going to try to set that up and we would
(36:43):
have a boxing ring and see if we could get
those two. I've been around bad Larry. I mean all
you got to do is hit him in his beer belly.
I mean that's it. And he's got his new teeth,
so he's got to be, you know, protective of that.
Noah in Indiana, Hy Noah, thanks for holding What do
you have for me? Hey?
Speaker 7 (37:02):
Dan Danett, love the show. Thanks first time, long time
six ' four in a fig three five, Thank you
smaller hands in mars Hey, two things real quick, I
have one suggestion for how to at least somewhat alleviate
the three point issue in the NBA, and that is
on fouls that occur in the paint on the shot.
(37:26):
Foul has occur in the paint on the shots, player
goes to the free throw line for two free throws.
If he makes the first free throw, the second free
throw then can become worth two points if it's made.
If he misses the first, it's Dolvin Boyd still only
works one on the second shot.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
Yeah, but I don't want gimmicks. I mean, I appreciate
you offering up a solution here, Noah, But the NBA,
this is what it is. This is just like the
NFL in baseball. Until somebody comes up with a different
approach on offense, then you're going to continue to have
this fell. They starting to run the ball a whole
lot more than they used to baseball. Now you're relying
(38:04):
on people doing the intangibles, not just hitting a home run.
Until that happens, this is what basketball is. Kevin in Oregon, Hi, Kevin,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 7 (38:14):
Hey?
Speaker 12 (38:14):
Dan, I called you a couple of weeks ago. I'm
the retired surgery he said. I wanted to go out
and tell the family we lost the patient. Anyway, I
was in Iraq in two thousand and three in the
army serving as a surgeon. They had a USO show.
I was reminded of this because of the Tyson fight
against whoever. That Jake Poser or whatever his name is. Anyway,
(38:38):
the USO show was going on there and all over
North was there and he thought, he's not a big man.
He's pretty small. Anyway, I walked up to him and
I said, man, you're a lot smaller you look on TV.
He got right in my face while he tried to
we would have had to get like on a chair
or something you actually get in my face. But he
got right in my face, really angry. He said, I
could still kick your ass, and I believe he could.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
Well, you get that old man power, you know, toughness there,
you know the So he told the story. So he's
a doctor in Oregon and he went out to talk
to the family and he's you know, they're all waiting
to find out whatever happened to whoever got injured or hurt.
You know, Uh, we lost him. And then he wanted
(39:24):
to do this to the family, we lost we lost Tommy.
Oh no, no, no, I mean we can't find him.
We don't know where he is now. He's alive, he's good.
We just lost him, and he thought that would be
a funny thing to say to a grieving family. I
respect him for thinking that that. That's it's kind of dark,
(39:47):
dark humor in real life.
Speaker 3 (39:50):
Though, if you want to do that, like in some
movie or something.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
I'm sorry, we lost Tommy. No no, no, I mean
he's he's fine. He's gonna be a cafeteria. Yeah, we
don't know where he he wondered off here. Not everybody
gets my censium or time. They do, not see. Would
you update the poll results if you can?
Speaker 3 (40:09):
Uh, yes, I can.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
I'm getting a report too. By the way, that the
pea bomb last week worked, Oh it did. I think
Paul might have hit on his peebomd last week, but
I don't know. We have to confirm that. I would
rather say that he didn't.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
Let's see who do you want to win? Right now?
Speaker 4 (40:24):
Mike Tyson is up to ninety six percent of that vote.
That's amazing win an amazing number.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Who do you think will win? Mike Tyson is at
sixty three percent of the vote. Yeah, I apologize to
Paulie if I didn't remember his pea bomb, but I'll
take his word for it. Final hour on the way,
we will talk to Brian win Horst. Wendy will stop
buying this meet Friday. More of your phone calls as
(40:50):
well
