Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
If you buy into the adage when the Cowboys lose,
America wins, you're having a great season. Texans handled the Cowboys,
and the Texans now seven and four. The Cowboys drop
to three and seven after three straight twelve win seasons.
The sky is falling in Dallas, literally and figuratively. The
team came in with playoff aspirations, maybe Super Bowl aspirations,
(00:27):
but here we are ten games deep and it's time
to accept the Cowboys for who they really are. It's
a poorly built team that continues to fail to get
out of its own way. They were embarrassed last night
at home. So they're in the same conversation with the
Patriots and the Panthers. Nobody saw this when coming. The
star on the helmet continues to keep Dallas in the news,
(00:49):
and they will continue to hear about Michael Parsons contract.
We'll hear about the prospects of teams or players that
the team has fallen in love with. With the draft,
Jerry World maybe wanting to tear down the stadium and
build a new stadium. And part of the roof was
falling and caving in last night. But the relationship with
the Cowboys is always interesting because you either love them
(01:13):
or you hate them. There's no middle ground. And what
you're seeing right now, this is a juicy little payback
to all those victories and all the attention that they receive.
For A three and seventeen, we'll start with Ceedee Lamb
talking about what it's like to play for the Cowboys
and when you face these opponents each week.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Obviously everybody is looking to embarrasses, right they have their opportunity.
When they do, they try to, you know, put us out,
and we had so much success over the last few
years as far as in the regular season. It's just
starting about us right now. So for us, we gotta
find ways. You gotta find ways to go together, play together,
and then it's just thing out.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah. You know, the TV executives have to be wringing
their hands because they love Dallas. You got Dallas and
the Giants the annual Thanksgiving Day game, then you have
two primetime games on Monday night. You got Week fourteen
against the Bengals and then you have Week sixteen against
the Buccaneers. We love watching Dallas and those who love
(02:17):
watching Dallas succeed and those watching Dallas fail. You get
a whole lot of one and a little bit of
the other one this season. And Cooper Rush did okay
last night. He's kind of non threatening. I don't know
if they get to the point where they go, let's
just see if Trey Lance can play football. You gave
up a fourth round pick, which doesn't sound like a lot,
(02:38):
but in the NFL that's a big deal. Look at
the receivers who have been traded for fourth round picks
this year. Maybe see if Trey Lance can play and
then if not, maybe you're moving on from him and
Cooper Rush. But you're watching that Dallas team and you
keep waiting for something to happen. It's not going to happen.
And Mike McCarthy is basically just kind of, you know,
(03:00):
twisting in the wind. And Jerry will bring in somebody
next year. But there's bigger pictures and we'll go back
months and months ago, maybe last year. And Seaton first
brought this up. He said, you know, Dallas has a
problem because they have a guy who's going to make
fifty or sixty million dollars at quarterback. They got a
wide receiver going to make thirty million dollars and then
(03:21):
you have a defensive player who's probably going to be
or want to be, the highest defensive player in the
game as far as how he's paid. You would think
that's a good problem, but it's not because of how
the team is built the other positions and they don't
have a running game, and it is you know, I
look at the Texans. Joe Mixon was a great pickup.
(03:43):
Now America is never going to embrace him for what
happened off the field when he was in college. But
he was good with the Bengals, and he was really
good last night. This really helped CJ. Stroud and CJ.
Stroud has regressed a little bit, but the Texans are
still a playoff caliber team in a really, really bad division.
But you're watching last night and the Texans do have
(04:05):
some playmakers there, Nico Collins. When he plays, they played well.
But Dallas has lost five home games, the first five
home games for the first time since nineteen eighty nine,
and they're getting blown out. They're giving up thirty seven
points per game at home. The last time that happened
a team gave up that many points per game through
(04:27):
five games nineteen eighty one, and if you go back
to the playoff loss, you know, we may have looked
at the loss to Green Bay last year as an
aberration in the playoffs, but it wasn't because if you
go back to that loss, the Cowboys have lost six
in a row at home, and they've trailed by at
least twenty points in each of their six home losses.
(04:48):
Like these are numbers that you never would have thought
with Dallas, whether you like him or not. And this
isn't all just hey, Dak got injured. This is a
bad team. They chose to bring back Zeke Elliott. They're
just not They don't They're one dimensional team. And now
with that dimension being Cooper Rush, you're not going to
beat anybody. Now, I'm looking at this schedule and they
(05:10):
have a chance to salvage. What do you guys think
the over under is? According to DraftKings victories for the
Dallas Cowboys. Marvin, I'll start with you. They have three
how many wins over under Cowboys five and a half?
Bloop bloop blue wow wow? Yep, five and a half,
the same as the Jets, the Bears. They're over under
(05:35):
six and a half. How about the Chiefs over Unders
fourteen and a half. And I did want to pick
up on that with the Chiefs because we're going to
see the Chiefs and the Bills probably again. And is
Buffalo going to They're nine and two and Kansas City
is nine and one. If we start to play this
(05:56):
out now with the final, you know, six or seven games.
So Kansas City's at the Panthers, they host the Raiders,
they host the Chargers, they're at the Browns, host the Texans,
they're at the Steelers. Two losses maybe in there. Buffalo
has two losses right now, so Kansas City would end
up with three losses. Buffalo hosts San Francisco, They're at
(06:20):
the Rams, They're at the Lions. Then they host the Patriots.
Jets Patriots, are they going to have one or two
more losses? And if they get to four losses, they're
going to be going to Kansas City probably for the
AFC title game. Seems like a foregun conclusion in the
NFC with the class being the Detroit Lions, and I
(06:41):
don't know if the Eagles are a close second, but
feels like I don't think we're quite sure what to
make of the San Francisco forty nine ers a lot
of talent, they've had injuries. They are generic right now
in last place. A couple other things that happened the
Raven may be bringing in competition for Justin Tucker. The
(07:03):
Giants head coach has to answer a really tough question
on why he's bening Daniel Jones and Doug Peterson on
the hot seat in Jacksonville. All right, he Seaton, let's
pull question today.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Well, I was gonna start with the one here, best
bad team. It is the best bad team right now.
The Dolphins are at four and six. They feel like
they should be better than four and six.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Right, So I like the Dolphins, Yes, I do. I
think they're a good team, kind of disguised as a
bad team.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
We're gonna have to remove some teams from this. Actually,
the Bengals, they're four and seven. They're a good bad team, right.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
They're a high end bad team. Yeah, yeah, who else
would you put in there?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Well, we can put the Cowboys on there, they're three
and seven.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
No, no, we're not going to do that. We can't
do that unless you say this is put an asterisk
by and say this is just for clicks.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
Yes, Well, it doesn't it feel like they should be
a better team than what they are.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
I mean their records.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
I don't think it's different than the Bengals or the Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I didn't like it. They're threatening though, right, No, No, I'm
joking about putting them on there. They're not threatening. They're
getting blown out. They're getting blown out at home. They're
not even competitive. So it's not like they're a good
team that has a bad record, like the Dolphins don't
have a winning record, but I think they're good. The
(08:30):
Bengals are at least competitive. They don't have a good record,
but I think that they can be competitive. Yes, poem.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
Yeah, the Bengals have a top five offense and they're
in every game. The Cowboys offense is ranked twenty fifth
and their defense is ranked thirty first.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
They're non threatening.
Speaker 6 (08:45):
But then I'll throw on a team in the poll,
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at four and six. They've outscored their
opponents by thirteen points this year. But they're four and
six and they've lost four in a row. But they
feel like they could beat anybody on a good night.
They're in every game.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah, okay, I can see them in there any other suggestions.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Yeah, yeah, well the Saints are four and seven, but
they feel much different than the Buccaneers at four and six, right.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Right, The Saints did beat the Buccaneers just recently. Yeah,
we'll put them on pause.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
How about Paul's Chicago Bears, they're not competing. How about
the Colts at five and six.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Well, there's they're still in the playoff hunt. So I
guess I have to I have to be grudgingly acknowledged
that the Colts are maybe a playoff team.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
I think that was one of my preseason hot takes
was the Colts make the playoffs. Okay, well, let's say
we've got five teams right now and we have room
for four. So Dolphins, Bengals, Colts, Buccaneers, Saints, let's take
it takes.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, I'll take the Saints off there. Yeah, they're out.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
My favorite stat of the day, by the way, is
that the US men's national team have won more games
at at and T Stadium this year than the Dallas
Cowboys have.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
Woo cow Stall of a day, day, Stata a day,
scot outa day.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
This is the stat of the day.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Thank you. Melissa Ethard's stat of the Day brought to
you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the
program eight seven to seven three DP shell Operator Tighters
sitting bybe take your phone calls, settle on a poll question. Also,
good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, our streaming partner,
thank you for downloading the app. So Matt Lionert next
hour and former backup quarterback with the Saints Chase Daniel
(10:45):
a little bit later on as well. Basketball Cavaliers against
the Celtics coming up tonight. Also the Pirates Paul Schemes
won the National League Rookie of the Year. And if
you were confused about the Yankees Luis Gill winning the
American League Rookie of the Year, you're not alone. It
was his third year in the majors. He didn't have
enough starts to qualify. He's twenty six years of age.
(11:09):
Remember when each euro came over and I think he
won what the MVP and Rookie of the year. He
was like twenty six or twenty seven, and he had
been playing against good competition in Japan for like five years.
Luis skill was twenty six. Yes, Paul, second only to algebra.
Things I don't understand Rookie eligibility in Major League Baseball
(11:32):
now Luis Skill. Twenty twenty one, he started six games.
Twenty twenty two, he started a game and played a
bunch of innings, not a bunch of a few innings. Then
he was off a year back in the minors, and
then in twenty twenty four he played a full season
with thirty starts. But somehow he's a rookie that seems
I knowe, whatever rules there are, he's eligible. It feels
(11:54):
weird should age factor in to being Rookie of the year. Man,
it's his third season.
Speaker 7 (12:02):
Yes, time, I don't know about age, but once you
get it up to the third fourth season of play,
even if it's not even if you didn't hit a
minimum number of games, it's like college football plays with
the red shirt.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
It's his ninth year playing for the college team. Well, now,
when you watch the NCAA tournament March madness, you'll be like,
wait a minute, that's like the fourth stomp for that?
Is he like twenty five?
Speaker 7 (12:22):
Yes, Hunter Dickinson from Kansas basketball. He's as old as
I am. He's over there like, man, I'm a grown man. Yes, yes,
very much.
Speaker 6 (12:32):
But he's not eligible for Freshmen in the Year in
the Big twelve or something.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
I don't think anymore.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
I think he's past that that riff.
Speaker 7 (12:38):
Wait wait, but it's Newcomer of the Year.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Did he win Newcomer of the Year at Kansas checking
last year? Yeah? Check on that if you can.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
He is the co host of Throwbacks Podcast, one of
Heisman Trophy, a couple of national titles at USC and
now part of the Fox Sports Big Noon Kickoff. But
he's joining us on behalf of Abbott sharing more about
the We Give Blood Drive and in conjunction with the
Big Ten, we'll have Matt explain that coming up in
a moment. Good to see you again. How do you
(13:24):
think your career would be different, if any if you
came out now as opposed to when you did.
Speaker 8 (13:31):
That's a great question. I probably wouldn't have got drafted.
I wouldn't have got drafted Dan because I couldn't fit
in the style of offenses that are played now. So
it's a different world of football, and I see it
at the lowest levels, from flag football, youth tackle football.
Speaker 9 (13:48):
I'm watching my son play.
Speaker 8 (13:49):
High school football, who just committed to SMU in the
last couple weeks.
Speaker 9 (13:52):
Was pretty cool.
Speaker 8 (13:53):
So the game has really shifted from just from my
personal style of play. I think probably I would have
been okay, but you know, you got to be able
to move, You got to be able to do a
lot of other things in this day and age of football,
which was something that I was very limited in.
Speaker 9 (14:11):
Maybe I would have pitched in baseball probably, But.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Are the days of the drop back passer gone or
kind of becoming extinct.
Speaker 9 (14:20):
It's a good question.
Speaker 8 (14:21):
I mean, look, I'm still maybe this is just the
traditional I'm still a believer that you have to win
from the pocket. You have to win from between the tackles.
Speaker 9 (14:31):
You have to be able to.
Speaker 8 (14:33):
You know, pick up or be able to throw when
you're getting blits inside it, take those hits.
Speaker 9 (14:37):
I don't think you can run around and just make plays.
Speaker 8 (14:40):
All that being said, a lot of these guys now,
and obviously Mahomes is a great example, like can do that,
but they can also do more, you know, And that
was that was the biggest difference.
Speaker 9 (14:50):
I think.
Speaker 8 (14:50):
I think if you're looking at today's age, you know,
you look at someone like Aaron Rodgers, who obviously is
at the tail end of his career and never was
considered a statue in the pocket, but he would run
when he had to, and he's a great athlete. He
might be like the last of the guys that just
would really prefer to stay in there and throw from
the pocket. But that's how you win a lot of games.
(15:11):
So it is interesting that that position is just completely
evolved and changed over the last decade and you're seeing
it played at a very very high level. It's just
different than what we're used to. You know, there's no
more under center play action.
Speaker 9 (15:26):
Really.
Speaker 8 (15:26):
Jared Goff, you know, Jared Goff is a person that
I look at and it's like he's he's kind of
one of those like last of the Mohicans who is
not going to run. He's going to make his living
from the pocket, but he's got that system around him
in the way they're doing it. So it's it's interesting
the way it's evolved into what it is.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
And Matthew Stafford, you could throw him in there. It's
how people have fallen in love with Matthew Stafford almost overnight.
Like what you have these younger quarterbacks there, they look
up to him.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
C J.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Stround and Caleb Williams are like, man, I love Matthew Stafford.
What is it about Stafford? Now he was great against
the Patriots, you know, four touchdown passes, But what is
it about Stafford though that maybe is different than these
maybe pocket quarterbacks.
Speaker 8 (16:11):
He It's such a great question because I feel like
he's maybe one of the most underrated quarterbacks that we've
seen in the last fifteen twenty years, at least since
he's playing. I mean, he's the number one pick out
of Georgia. Was was I don't want to say stuck
in Detroit, but was in Detroit for most of his careers,
so one games but never really you know, the playoffs
and all that. But the dude is the toughest, one
(16:33):
of the toughest players you ever meet. He just, you know,
I think he's one of those guys like he has
elite arm strength, he moves, he has all of those
traits and like, I don't know, it's like, you know,
it's one of those guys that all these young kids
are like, oh, we love Stafford and I think it's
like I think it's this toughness.
Speaker 9 (16:51):
I think it's the longevity. I think it's all of
these things.
Speaker 8 (16:54):
I don't think people realize, like he took a beating
in Detroit. You know, you have some of those highlights
where he's playing with like like like he is just
one of those dudes that is like the should be
in the Hall of Fame, Like I hope he's won
a super Bowl and he's still playing. Yeah, I think
so too, And he's he's still playing at a high level.
And it's interesting because in that generation, you know, you
(17:15):
look at kind of like obviously Brady, and then you
look at like Manning's and all of those guys Breeze
and you know, guys that I early in Mike or
I played with and kind of look up to because
that was what the quarterbacks looked like. Roethlisberger was was
a little bit of a different type of player, uh
when he was playing. But Stafford has kind of just
like stood the test of time, you know, part of that,
(17:36):
but also part of this new generation of players. And
I think he's just really when he went to LA
he really started to gain the respect of his peers.
I think you know, and that's why a lot of
these guys like to emulate their game after him.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
If I said you could pick, you can be Josh
Allen or Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 8 (17:57):
I mean, I mean, Patty'd be Patty Mahomes. Give me
a couple of rings, Dan, Come on, you remember we
lost it. We lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Man,
san Antonio Holmes or outside I would have had I
would have had a ring as a backup.
Speaker 9 (18:08):
Quarterback, which had been fantastic. But you know what I love,
I don't.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
I mean, you nervous about getting in the Super Bowl
if you want.
Speaker 9 (18:18):
To hear it? Okay, So Dan, you want to hear
a great story.
Speaker 8 (18:20):
So we're we're in that Super Bowl, right, which was
a great one, and we score. Uh, Kurt throws a
little in route and Larry splits his safety's right runs
for like seventy yards.
Speaker 9 (18:31):
We go up with a couple of minutes left. Ben
just marches down.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
He throws that incredible throw to san Antonio Holmes in
the back of the end zone. There was I don't know,
say thirty seconds. There was enough time for us to
maybe move and I think I think we needed a
touchdown to win. Kurt got I think on one play
Kurt got hurt his shoulder on like a sack and
there was still time left, and I don't it. Basically,
what was going to happen is if it was an
(18:57):
incomplete plat or whatever the clock stop. I was going
in on the last play to throw a damn hell
Mary to try to win the super because he couldn't
throw he like he bangus. I think Lamar Woodley got
him or something on the outside. So I'm sitting there.
I think Todd Haley was our OC at the time,
and I'm like, oh my god, I'm certain to warm
u I'm about to have to throw a fifty five
gyuard ball to win the game.
Speaker 9 (19:18):
Because you imagine if that would have happened and they
got a touchdown.
Speaker 8 (19:23):
But you didn't get easy, I'd be going to Disneyland.
Yeah no, I didn't get in. It was incredible, though, Man,
that was yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
But you know, no warm up. It's not like they
let you go to the bullpen like you're trying to
loosen up your arm. You're on the sidelines.
Speaker 8 (19:37):
You know, in that moment adrenaline, I probably would have
chucked at sixty yards for sure. Any other day, you know,
probably not, but that one just going out there and
to heave it, I would have got it there for sure.
Speaker 9 (19:49):
It was about a fifty five guard throw which I
could have handled.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
He's Matt Liiner and you can see him. The Fox
Sports Big Noon kickoff, you got Indiana and Ohio State.
Now Ohio State. There's been some kind of blowback on
why are we always playing these new games? Now I
understand pre game, right into the game, does Ohio State
have a legitimate beef that maybe they should play later
(20:13):
in the afternoon or in the evening.
Speaker 8 (20:15):
Well, I mean you got to remember too, the you
know again, this is above my pay grade.
Speaker 9 (20:20):
I know.
Speaker 8 (20:20):
The last couple of weeks and getting a lot of
the fans have been upset essentially because it, in their eyes,
gives their team an advantage, whether it's the wide out
Penn State, which which I get as a as a
college football fan as well. You know, Fox in the
Big New strategy started a handful of years ago to
own that window and to be the big game in
(20:40):
the morning when we all wake up and we sit
on the couch for twelve hours to watch college football.
Speaker 9 (20:45):
And it's been a great It's been great for Fox.
Speaker 8 (20:47):
I think I think it has been overall great for
fans in college football because you're getting a big, big
ten game or whatever it is that in that slot
for us as big new kickoff. You know, we go
where we go and the shows and we try to
promote and give a great show and give the fans
what they want. So some of that is a lot
(21:08):
of that is out of my control personally and our
out of our control as a show.
Speaker 9 (21:12):
But the games have been great.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
I think Gus, Joel and Jenny on the game side
do it a tremendous job. Are the best in college
football in my opinion, and we just kind of we
kind of we kind of do we don't so so
I can understand when fans are upset and they want
all day and they want the night game and all that.
Speaker 9 (21:28):
But it is what it is and and it's worked
for us.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
If I said that we were going to play backyard football,
big noon kickoff versus game day.
Speaker 9 (21:39):
Why are you trying to stir the pod?
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Dan?
Speaker 9 (21:41):
Come on? Those are those are my listen?
Speaker 8 (21:43):
I would say a game day, game day is the
staple of college football. They've been doing it for a
long long time. Those guys over there.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Is talking flag football, flag football.
Speaker 9 (21:56):
Oh oh, we're a lot younger than those guys. Remember
we got you know, we got Mark Ingram who just
who could still play? I just hand the ball off
to him. And I'm not sure anybody anybody.
Speaker 8 (22:07):
Over there is is Mark. We want to play tackle football.
I'm sure you know McAfee would want to play tackle
football too.
Speaker 9 (22:13):
He's he's a little crazy.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
But okay, But but are you starting over Brady Quinn?
Speaker 9 (22:19):
You know what, I'll play receiver.
Speaker 8 (22:21):
That's fine, I'll let you Actually, actually I got two
new hips dance. I don't know if I could be
playing receiver. Probably I'll be Brady at tight end. No
one's getting in front of that train either. Hey guess what, Dan,
real quick, real quick. I want to say this because
last time I saw you, I think me and Jerry
were on the show Farra for throwbacks. We got a big,
(22:43):
big shooting competition today.
Speaker 9 (22:45):
Basketball.
Speaker 8 (22:46):
We've been talking a lot of smack online. I just
want to let you know we're gonna be at USC later.
A little three point shot. Who you got, man? Who
you think is winning that one?
Speaker 9 (22:57):
Thank you? I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
Thank you.
Speaker 9 (22:58):
That's all I just wanted to.
Speaker 8 (23:00):
I told Jerry to turn on the show the morning
to watch, so I give him, I give him a
little plug.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Explain how you got Kobe's jersey over your shoulder.
Speaker 8 (23:11):
So that's great question. So Kobe my all time favorite athlete.
I met Kobe in Newport Beach. It's where he lived
and we had a mutual friend So I met him
years and years and years ago. I actually met him
when I was at USC and all those things, but
I really got to know him outside of that world
at like barbecues down in Newport all these things just
(23:34):
on a different level and became, you know, some somewhat friends,
you know. When I saw him and all those things,
and I just I asked for I was like, hey,
would you sign this whatever? And then that's how I
got that, and then it's you know, obviously when he
passed away, I had seen him.
Speaker 9 (23:52):
My son, my oldest son plays basketball too as well
as football, and.
Speaker 8 (23:57):
We were playing in the Made Hoops tournament, which is
the circuit all around the West Coast, and Kobe was
coaching his daughter and that team in the same circuit
on the girl side, and we had seen him earlier
in that month of January at the Mamba Academy over
down in Thousand Oaks for that weekend. It's a weekend
(24:18):
of basketball, and then you play a couple of weekends later,
a couple weeknds later, and I'll like, I've had that
jersey for years, but I'll just never forget. We were
talking for probably twenty minutes. He had seen Cole. He's like, damn, Cole,
you've grown. Like Cole was already like six feet in
seventh grade or something like that. We were watching him
coach his daughter and the girls team right there. And
(24:42):
then a couple of weeks later, obviously the tragedy happened.
Speaker 9 (24:44):
But also to I, you know, I know.
Speaker 8 (24:48):
Vanessa fairly well and his her daughter the youngest ones
playing our flag football leagues down in Orange County, which
is which has been pretty awesome to have them a
part of that too. So Kobe my all time favorite athlete.
I got a chance to know him, and obviously we
miss him and everybody misses him.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Tell me what you're doing with the Abbot the we
give blood drive in conjunction with the Big Ten.
Speaker 8 (25:11):
Yeah, so this is this is really incredible. What Abbot
is doing. So they've partnered with all of the Big
ten schools basically to launch a competition to see who
can donate the most blood and and the school who
donates the most blood gets a million dollars to an
advanced student or health community help. So there's a big
incentive for people to go out there and not only
(25:31):
just support your school and whatever school that may be,
but also to give blood and donate. We have a severe,
severe blood shortage in this country.
Speaker 9 (25:41):
And millions of people impacted by that.
Speaker 8 (25:44):
So it's it's just a really cool campaign and a
competition to get people out there to donate. You can
go to Big ten, Big ten dot org, backslash abbot
to pick a location you donate blood, You upload your
proof of donation, which is really important out there who
are are listening, and you pick your school and it's
as simple as that and the winner will be announced
(26:04):
when the Big ten Championship came to Sember seventh. So
ABA's doing an incredible job with this, and again, as
I said, the blood shortage is real in this country,
so I encourage everybody. I'm actually giving blood this Friday
up in Ohio State, will be out in Columbus for
the game.
Speaker 9 (26:17):
So I'm gonna do that Friday.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Give me sixty seconds on the state of USC football.
Speaker 8 (26:26):
I'm gonna need about two hours, but in sixty seconds.
In sixty seconds, we are And I say we obviously
because I'm a Trojan, but I'm a fan.
Speaker 9 (26:37):
I want to see my school do well.
Speaker 8 (26:39):
It's a challenging spot right now. You know, the expectation
is really high at USC. Lincoln came in three years ago.
This is third year and almost went to a college
football playoff, right, which was a great year. We fell
short in the Pack Pactical Championship game, and then it's
sort of tailed off over the last couple of years.
And we knew going into this year, the first year
of the Big Ten, it's gonna be a challenge and
(27:01):
a lot of.
Speaker 9 (27:01):
New pieces on the team, and it hasn't been this season.
Speaker 8 (27:04):
I think he would want, the team would want, and
the USC fan base, and I would just say, big picture,
you know, like he knows, he knows what he needs
to do, he knows what the expectation is at USC.
And and I believe with nil and believe with the
talent in Southern California that there is there's no excuse
not to be able to build a championship team.
Speaker 9 (27:24):
And I think he knows that. So listen. The pulse
is it's it's tough.
Speaker 8 (27:28):
There's a lot of people, a lot of fans that
are frustrated, and you know, the Mancha Kun is like
it's the same thing week in and week out, and
then that just needs to be changed.
Speaker 9 (27:37):
And I'm not I'm not saying anything anybody doesn't know
but us. He needs to get better. It is playing
and simple.
Speaker 8 (27:43):
They have a chance to beat UCLA this week, They
have a chance to play Notre Dame next week and
maybe knock them out of the playoffs. So there's still
stuff to play for and to kind of create some
excitement going into next year.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
The best team in college football is the best team,
he said, Yeah, I'd say Oregon.
Speaker 8 (28:06):
I know they're number one, but I just I you know,
in the knock with them is like I think it's
still like the perception of maybe what they've been in
the past, like a lot of speed, but don't have
this like this is not that. Like Dan Lanning is
a real dude. Like Dan Lanning is an SEC coach.
Dan Lanning has built a team like that they can
play with anybody up front, and they have the speed
(28:29):
to play with anybody, like in Ohio State and some
of these these teams that have tremendous talent on the outside.
And Dylan Gabriels, I mean, gosh, he's played a lot
of football and he's won a lot of games. So
I think Oregon is is for sure number one, but
it is very This year is fantastic because you have, like, honestly,
like I think you have seven or eight teams like
Ole Miss could win the national championship. Georgia even though
(28:50):
they've been up and down, could win, Bama can win,
Texas could win, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State for that matter,
might have it like you. Just like honestly, I think
anybody could beat anybody right now, which is great.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
He's Matt Liinert and for more information Big ten dot
Org backslash Abbott. Great to talk to you, Safe travels
to Columbus.
Speaker 9 (29:10):
Thanks Dan, appreciate you, buddy.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Chase Daniel Athletics Scoop City podcast. He co hosts that
and also the Chase Daniel Show on YouTube, which is
how we first stumbled upon Chase. He was breaking down
game footage and just loved his football acumen and now
a co host of the Facility on Fox Sports One.
He jones us on the program, are you back on
(29:42):
the Texans bandwagon? Chase?
Speaker 5 (29:46):
I mean, I don't know if I ever left, you
know what I mean. So they had Nico Collins back
last night, and I was doing some digging, and it's
pretty easy to see that when the Texans have Nico
Collins back, they're five and one. Without Nico Collins, they're
two and three. So he's a secret sauce. But I
still don't think that our guy CJ's playing very well.
(30:06):
He's not seen it as well, and I think the
biggest thing is he's having to let go of the
ball a lot sooner because his offensive line sucks, if
you just want to say that, because it is. They're
like thirtieth in pressure rates. So the defense is legit
though two touchdowns last night, but it's just they're a
weird team to get behind. Although I've never really left.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
I'm wondering about this and you being a former quarterback,
how long does it take the league to get a
book on you?
Speaker 5 (30:34):
Yeah, well, look, there's only so many things a defense
can do. They can play cover two, they can blitz,
they can play man, So defenses have way less of
a playbook, if that makes sense to me. I think
what they're doing on defense now to sort of counteract
is they're making him stay in the pocket. Like last year,
what I saw from him is like when stuff broke down,
(30:54):
he was able to escape and he was able to
make these plays down the field because the receivers were rolling. Now,
I think what they're doing a good job of on
defense is they're they're you call it a mush rush. Okay,
so a must rush means you're rushing the passer, but
you're really not rushing the passer and you just want
to stay in your pass rush lanes. Not a lot
of people talk about it, but that frustrates a quarterback
(31:14):
because you're taking away your first and second read and
you're not able to get out and extend the play.
That's what CJ was so good at last year, and
he's turning the ball over more so. I think it's
a little bit of both. I think CJ has to
just I mean, it obviously helped last night you have
Nico Collins, but you just got to go back to
sort of the basics of what you're doing and just like, hey,
you gotta somehow find a way to get out of
the pocket and make those plays down the field because
(31:36):
I thought last year that's what made them special.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
How did the Cowboys salvage this season?
Speaker 5 (31:43):
They can't.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
There's no way.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
How Like, like, where in the world are you gonna
salvage this season? Like your starter's Oh do you give.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
Trey Lance a chance? Like, like you have to start
looking at the future. Mike McCarthy's not going to be
there trade Micah Parson Like, I don't know, are you
trying to figure out exactly what I mean, what is
their identity now?
Speaker 5 (32:06):
They don't have it? And that's the problem, like right,
because that's what Jerry Jones said, Hey, we're all in
In the offseason. You know what they did. They signed
a long snapper, they didn't go out, they didn't get
Derek and they didn't get a run game. They didn't
do any of this stuff. So in free agency from
the start, and then you don't give your head coach,
Your lame duck head coach, Mike McCarthy a new contract,
so why even bring him back that? Like I go
back to that, Like you're a lame duck coach. The
(32:28):
only way you're keeping your job is if you win
the Super Bowl. And this roster is way worse than
it was last year. For me, I was on the
Trey Lance bandwagon, Like you trade a fourth round pick
for Trey Lance and now is your backup. He was
your third string quarterback, Like we know what Cooper Rush
can do. We don't know what Trey Lance can do.
Like he played pretty bad in the preseason, just wasn't
(32:49):
in timing and rhythm. But you put him out there
with Ceedee Lamb. Now, I mean, stuff might change, but
it's still at the end of the day, a quarterbacks
best friend's a run game. Dak didn't have it. That's
why he turned the football over. Cooper Rush doesn't have it.
They're having to throw the ball fifty yards and then Dad,
you know, the season's going crazy and hey wire, when
stuff's falling from the ceiling and Brandon Aubrey's missing kicks,
Like that's how I knew this season is over for them.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Chase daniel the Athletics Scoop City podcast, also the Chase
Daniels Show on YouTube and co hosting The Facility on
Fox Sports One. Josh Allen's MVP to loose.
Speaker 5 (33:23):
Oh yeah, I think so. And people, you know, I
said this on the air the other day, and I
got so much blowback, man, because like Lamar Jackson, like
he's having Like I agree, like Lamar's Jackson's having an
insane season. But you look at the offense around him
and the offensive line. They went out and they secured
and the receivers and he's got an offense around Josh Allen.
(33:46):
He's nine to two. The Bills are nine to two
for the first time since nineteen ninety two. And quite honestly,
he's doing it with nobody. And that doesn't mean any
ill will on their skill players. I think James Cook's
great Dogkin Cave miss last game, key On Coleman miss
last game. Marty Cooper's played one or two games since
he got traded. He's been hurt. So what Josh has
been able to do right now? He's the most valuable
(34:08):
player and people people sometimes forget it's the most valuable player.
It's not the best player. Like I would say the
best player right now even with a bad game is
Lamar Jackson. But what Josh is doing and Joe Brady's
doing is special. So I mean when you beat the
Chiefs too, like, just just sign me up for that
Josh Allen experience.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
If not the Lions in the NFC, then who No.
Speaker 5 (34:31):
It's the Lions. It's the Lions. Like for me, I
like what the Eagles are doing. However, I still feel
strongly that Jalen Hurts is not playing his best football
and the Eagles are doing what they're doing offensively because
of Saquon Barkley and that offensive line. Like if you
take Sakuon Barkley off the Eagles, I don't know if
(34:54):
they are where they're at right now, but when you
watch the Lions play, it's there on the different level.
Like Ben Johnson, Jared Goff. You could put Jared Goff
in the top five of the MVP race even with
a five interception game. You throw five interceptions at a
contender in the Houston, Texas and you somehow find a
way to win, like it's never been done since night
(35:15):
It's like the last time it's been done is like
nineteen seventy you come back from fifteen, you throw five interceptions.
So if I had to pick, and I'm just I'm
out all in on the Eagles. I think they're a
good team. I think defensively Vicvange's not getting enough credit
for what he's doing, especially since the bye week. But
I mean reluctantly, I'll say the Eagles just to appease you.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
I never thought we would read a headline or even
consider the Ravens making a change at kicker with Justin
Tucker like he was the sure thing. If if Marianna
there was a Marianna Rivera of football players or kickers,
Justin Tucker would be one of those names. What happens
to a kicker like this when all of a sudden
(35:58):
he's not who we thought he was.
Speaker 5 (36:00):
Yeah, I mean, look, Justin Tecker is gonna go down
as one of the greatest, if not the greatest kickers
of all time. I heard Eddie Panero just pass them
for the most accurate kicker in NFL history, right, And
it's sort of tough to see, like someone like Mario
and Rivera that you just know is gonna get done
and struggle. He's already missed as many kicks as he
did last year. And it's not even long kicks. It's
these short kicks. It's almost like you have the yips
(36:23):
in baseball, and it just seems when he's kicking the football,
he's not kicking it the way we're all used to.
So for like fans just in general, it's tough. There's
really nothing you can do because, like when you're at
practice with the kickers, like you see him working on
the side in the offensive defensive going, there's always working
out side and they'll come and have one special teams
(36:43):
period and kick. It's almost like more mental. I mean
it is more mental because physically he can still do it, right.
I think you've got to make some long kicks. You
got to make a game winning kick or something like
that to get it back. But what used to be
an automatic three is just not anymore and the Ravens
have lost some games because of it.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Yeah, trying to understand the Caleb Williams situation. Can you
put yourself in his position right now of why is
he struggling? Where bo Nix is lighting it up, Drake
May shows more promise and certainly Jayden Daniels.
Speaker 5 (37:17):
Yeah, I mean, you hit it right like Caleb Williams,
in my opinion, is a fourth quarterback right now in
terms of play, in terms of development. And I don't
want to put too much on coaching, but I do
agree that like the first four or five games of
the year, Shane Waldron, he was calling a very pro
style offense, almost like he did with Justin Fields, or
like what Luke Gtsey did with Justin Fields is like
(37:38):
almost the same offense where you're under center, your play action,
you're trying to do too much at the line of scrimmage.
I think you put too much on the rookie. And
when you do that and you don't have success, mentally
your mind goes to like can I handle this? Can
I handle this league? And he's confident on the outside right,
but you could tell mentally he wasn't seen at the
last few games. But I do like what Thomas Brown did.
(38:01):
He got back. He's running the football. I think they
ran a thirty times in the first half. So while
Bears friends are frustrated because really the whole franchise of
all the quarterbacks they've had has been frustrating. The've never
had a four thousand yard passer they ever had thirty five.
I get that, But when you go to last game,
I am encouraged by what I saw, mainly because he
(38:25):
just took the easy completions. He got the football out
of his hands, he didn't take bad sacks, he didn't
really turn over. And then when you look at the
two games they've lost, right the Washington Hell Mary game
and then this pass game where they get a block
kick when Caleb needed plays the most. In two minute
he made those plays like the last two drives against
the Commanders. He won that game for them if they
(38:45):
just knocked down the Hell Mary. And then this past
game in two minutes, he made an amazing third nineteen throw,
got out of the pocket, he made a crazy fourth
and three backs shoulder throw to Rona Dunda, and then
he checked to the game winning what should have been
the game winning catch to Keenan Allen in the slot.
So he's making progress, and I think this is sort
of where they should have started, and you got to
slowly build his confidence back up.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
Good to talk to you, Happy for your success and
thanks for joining us.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
Hey, I got a question, what's the deal with happy Gilmore?
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Too? Man?
Speaker 5 (39:15):
Are you? Are you in it? And when's it coming out? Like,
where's this whole thing going.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
I'm shooting December fifth, my scene, and I think it's
probably going to be fourth or July, like Summer Blockbuster,
but they're keeping it. I only got portions of the script.
I only got my part of the script. I don't
have the whole script. And Sandler said there's a plot twist,
(39:41):
and he didn't want me. He said, you can't, Danny,
you can't keep a secret. I go, all right, So
they only gave me my lines in the I think
I'm shooting December fifth.
Speaker 5 (39:51):
I'm a huge happy Gilmore fan, man, and it was
cool to see, like watching you watching watch it going
on in that whole movie and now' you know, get
to be on your show.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
So I appreciate it, man, Thank you, buddy,
