Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
In no particular order.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
The Bills roll the forty nine Ers, and you're MVP
candidate right now. It's Josh Allen's to lose, and it's
been that way for a couple of weeks. Christian McCaffrey
out may be done for the year.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Year.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
The Eagles over the Ravens. They are the second best
team in football, and I am including the Bills in that.
It's the Detroit Lions, the Eagles, then the Bills in
my opinion, and don't count out the Steelers. The Steelers
have a two game lead in the AFC North and
they own the tiebreaker against the Ravens. So the Steelers,
(00:40):
they outlast the Bengals. The Bears need a new head coach.
They needed a new head coach when they had a
head coach. The Vikings over the Cardinals, Seatons, Chargers over
the Falcons, and Trevor Lawrence out with a cheap shot,
and the question is will he play again this season?
With college football? Obviously, Ohio State losing to Michigan, Georgia survives,
(01:04):
and then you've got the rest of the situation here
that they're going to try to put together, put it
in a blender, and then tomorrow night we'll figure out
where things stand. South Carolina might be as good as
anybody right now in the country. Syracuse drops Miami. Penn
State might be the second ranked team. I didn't say
second best. I said the second ranked team in the
(01:24):
country when the rankings come out. We got football coming
up tonight, the Browns at Fritzy's Broncos, who almost put
the Bengals in there.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Sorry about that.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Brown's at the Broncos and the Broncos are giving six.
The NBA Cup continues as well, Lakers Timberwolve's Heat Celtics.
So a lot of things going on here as we
get your phone calls ready as well. Seaton Poll question
for hour one is going to be bra what are
you going to go with?
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Man?
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Where do we start? So much happened this weekend? Well
we might as well start on a negative. Who had
the worst weekend? We have to take Ohio State out.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Of that, don't we?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Uh, Dewey, did anybody have a worse weekend than Ohio State?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Well, Matt Eberflus had a bad weekend. Yeah, but that
was you know, we knew that that was going to
be inevitable.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
But even for a guy who we knew was going
to get fired, the way he chose to have his
final act of getting fired was particularly terrible.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
That was like, I don't know why we would hire
you again to do this.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Anybody, Well, I wouldn't hire him to do anything that
had to do with math, anything to do with clock management.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
There, it's weird.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
I thought the Bears organization was more embarrassing than Matt Eberflus.
Matt Eberflus didn't understand clock management. You need to call
a timeout. You had a timeout. You have a rookie
quarterback in that situation. Let's regroup. Regroup here, let's just
go over the basics here. You got two plays. If
(02:55):
you want to call a different play, Okay, we're all
in the same page here. Don't let the clock wind down.
But then to let him go out and have his
press conference knowing you're going to fire him, he's talking
about next week, he's talking about how they're preparing.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I think they play the Niners. What are you doing?
Speaker 3 (03:16):
That to me was more egregious then. I mean, he
hasn't been a good coach. I wouldn't have brought him
back this year. He proved that I think they have talent.
I think Caleb has played pretty well. But you can't
send him out there and go, hey, am I holding
my press conference?
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Go get him, yeah, and then all of a sudden,
two hours later you fire him. So the Bears front office,
to me, was more embarrassed or should be more embarrassed
than Matt eberflu S.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
All right.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
See is that the same Bears front office that hired
Matt Eberflus in the first place.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And kept him.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Yeah, that's really the thing, because now every time I
watch the Chargers do well, I think, see, there's your guy,
Jim Harbaugh.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
He was right up the road. He was right up
the road, and you could have brought him in.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
The fact that they didn't even call him in from
an interview, Oh.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Former Bear quarterback, you know you got him there.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
You definitely don't want Caleb Williams stuttering studying under somebody
like Jim Harbaugh who could maybe help ease him into
the league.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
No, you don't want that. He's got some experience doing it.
I don't want that's.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
All right, So, Ohio State Matt Eberflus slash Bears organization.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, i'd say.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Ryan Day specifically, but okay, yeah, yeah, I could throw
Kirk Cousins in this on that list.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Well, if you throw him in there, he's going to
be intercepting. Yeah, somebody else is catching them. No, no, hey,
I love Kirk Cousins. I'm sorry he was terrible yesterday. Yeah,
he was terrible. He yes, he knows that that was bad.
And I wonder, I wonder how much longer until we
(04:55):
see Michael Pennix Junior the third here? They're too good
to be this bad?
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Wait? That was weird? Too good, too good to be
this bad? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, and she was too good
to be this bad? What else do you have seton?
How about Justin Tucker? Oh?
Speaker 4 (05:17):
Wow, speaking of people, we like that. I don't want
to see him too poorly. But uh, he's having a
horrible year.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, I got to put him on the poll question
got to that was tough to watch. You know, you
see somebody who's so good and then all of a
sudden you're like, what happened?
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (05:39):
And then and then you know just how powerful the
mind is with these things, because these athletes, they all
have great talent. And then you I What separates you,
I think is your your mental approach to things. And
for a kicker, you're always in your head. But when
you're that great and sometimes it's automatic, then you can
(06:00):
see him actually thinking.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
He's thinking, and that's the worst thing you can do.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Sometimes athletes react, they've thought before they get into the situation,
and then they just react and you see him just going,
please make it, please make it, please make it, and
then all of a sudden, he's human. Now, I wonder,
can you do to your kicker what we've seen organizations
(06:27):
do to their quarterbacks. Anthony Richardson sit down for a
couple of weeks, Bryce Young sit down for a couple
of weeks, and now you're seeing those two quarterbacks be
able to play well. Anthony Richardson is a more athletic
Jameis Winston like, I don't know what's happening, but damn
he's fun to watch. And Bryce Young, I'm happy for him.
(06:50):
You go toe to toe with the Chiefs, you go
toe to toe with Tampa, and you lost both of
those games, but those.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Aren't on you.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Can you do that to somebody who is thirty five
years of age as opposed to somebody who's twenty one,
twenty two. Could you sit him down for a month.
I know that seems like, wow, that'd be a drastic move,
But can you do that to him just to say
get away here, get away from here a little bit,
(07:18):
kind of figure out what's going on, just do something.
But it feels like and look, he's the stand up guy.
He stood in there and he was answering the questions yesterday.
In fact, do we have well here's John Harbaugh talking
about Justin Tucker.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
We've been working through it. I mean, you work through
with every single player, every single thing. You fight to
try to help guys to be successful. You know, So
we'll do that. I mean, if you're asking me, ever
we're going to move out from Justin Tucker, I'm not
really planning on doing that right now. I don't think
that'd be wise. But you know, he'll tell you. He'll
be the first to tell you he's got to make
he needs to make make kicks as he can. And
I had to think if you look at Justin Tucker's history,
(07:58):
you'd have to say he's capable of doing that, that
that's something he's going to want to do. And I
know we're all going to want to do it.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
And I don't know if this is the yips that
you see in golf or guys get in their head
and they get to the free throw line. I don't know,
but you know somebody who is going to the Hall
of Fame who all of a sudden forgot how to
kick and missing an extra point. And we've gotten to
the point now where a fifty yarder is not a
big deal. Fifty five yards is not a big deal.
(08:26):
We almost expect you to make those. But Justin Tucker
is now a liability for this Ravens team. Who else
are you going to put on the list?
Speaker 5 (08:35):
There?
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Seeton, Let's say, well, I think we keep it at
those four.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
They've had particularly terrible weekends, Okay, Matt Eberflus, Ryan Day,
Kirk Cousins, Justin Tucker, Okay, those are pretty those are
pretty bad weekends. Yeah, we have a bunch of other
options for pole questions here, most impactful game of the weekend.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Okay, let me save those until the second se there.
You know when you talk about can you bench a
Hall of Famer? Well, Russell Wilson got benched, so I
mean he got kicked to the curb. They paid him
ninety million dollars to go away in Denver, and he
had a great day yesterday.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Great day. You go toe to toe with Joe Burrow.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
By the way, Joe Burrow is going to have maybe
one of the more incredible seasons playing for a losing team.
I don't know how you know they would rank those,
but he's not going to make the playoffs. And he's
been great this year. That defense has been horrible. And
when these two teams to get together, it's always like
when the Ravens and the Steelers get together, like their
(09:42):
crooked scores. It's like, you know, twenty two to eighteen.
Now you're putting up crazy amounts of points there eighty
two points combined. That's the most of any of their
one hundred and two games that they played between these two.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
How Stall of the Day.
Speaker 7 (10:04):
Stant of the Day Statuta day stand outa day.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
This is the Stant of the Day, Out of the Day,
brought to uvon Panini America, the official trading cards of
the program.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Yes, Paulie, going back.
Speaker 7 (10:21):
To Ryan Day and Matt Iberflus, it feels like a
guy like Matt Eberflus will probably get a defensive coordinator
position somewhere on a below average team. Ryan Day hasn't
beaten Michigan since twenty nineteen. It's a long time. If
he do you think his job is in jeopardy or
is that median fan talk.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
The importance of that game? The game? Yeah, and you've
lost four in a row.
Speaker 7 (10:45):
He does have the playoffs to clean up his mess.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Well, yeah, this is a fourteen playoff. Yes, then he
would probably.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
I no, I can't say probably, be I think that
this would be far more serious. Right now, you're a
twenty three in a half point favor, you're at home.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
This is Michigan.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Their quarterback is a walk on cancer survivor. They don't
really have weapons. You know what they did? They played
defense and ran the football. That's the ingredient and it
has been the tried and true ingredient of this rivalry
ever since I can remember. Can you run the football
(11:26):
and can you play defense? And that's exactly what they did,
and they were the better team. You bring in Chip Kelly,
he's your offensive coordinator. You spend twenty million dollars on.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Your roster, and that's what you have to show for it.
Ten points.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
He does have the playoffs to clean up the mess though,
But it might be. I can't think of a coach
who needs to win the championship more than Ryan Deck.
You know, Kaylin de Bor just got there at Alabama.
Be smart, he's secure there. You can go down the
list here. Dabo Sweeney still going to be back at Clemson.
(12:08):
I mean, there's no pressure there on him, like James
Franklin at Penn State, no pressure on him. But Ryan
Day there's a whole lot of pressure on. We'll talk
to Paul Feinbaum a little bit later on. We'll ask
him is it national title or bust for Ryan Day?
Which is crazy to say with their dominance in the
Big Ten aside from Michigan, their dominance, but you know,
(12:31):
beating really good teams.
Speaker 8 (12:34):
You know.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Now you're going to put that to the test.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Could they be on the road opening weekend of the playoffs, Yes, Tom,
but that.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
Robbery is so big and he's been so bad these
last few years.
Speaker 9 (12:45):
Is it even enough to win the national title game
to some crazy Buckeys fans like we won the national
title but we lost a.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
Michigan No, No, that fixes everything. Yes, it hurts when you
lose to Michigan because it used to be. If you
lost to Michigan, Michigan, you know that team was moving on.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
You weren't.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Now, all of a sudden, here you go. You got wounded,
you got embarrassed, you got humbled, and now it's a
question of regrouping going into the playoffs and not getting
left behind. But if you win a national title, yes,
that will clean up what happened over the weekend in Columbus.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
Herm Edwards ESPN football analyst, former college and NFL head coach,
and he works on the Mothership on Sports Center, variety
of other programs. He's been a busy guy this morning.
All right, Herm, you've got more of a problem with
those planting the flag or those reacting to those planting
the flag.
Speaker 10 (13:52):
I think the planning the flag days are over for
college football.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
I do. I think when you see something like that occur, obviously,
the with the emotions of young people, I just think
it was a bad look for college bad look.
Speaker 10 (14:08):
For everyone involved in it.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
I think this will be one of those deals where
they'll get together and say, you know what, those days
are done.
Speaker 10 (14:14):
No more flag planting.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Yeah, but how do you prevent that?
Speaker 5 (14:18):
You just as a coach and as a you know,
college university, you just make sure the head coach speaks
to the players as well as the ADA says, look,
we're not planting flags. If anyone plays the flag, obviously
there's gonna be consequences. We're not gonna do that here
at this university any longer. And it's gonna it's gonna
probably be a part of the NCAA policy.
Speaker 10 (14:36):
That's that's gonna it's not what we do.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
And I know we've had people say, well, Ohio State fans,
what they said to players and how they treat the player.
I understand all of that, but you got the ultimate
scoreboard coach, where you beat them in their place.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Just wave goodbye to them instead of we're gonna put
a flag in aster turf, which you can't do, and
then you know it's going to bring about what it
brought about.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
But there's no doubt and you know, and you know
young people are excited about doing that.
Speaker 10 (15:07):
I mean, it's kind of evolved to this in college.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
Football, we've got to plan a flag and like, right, really,
it's the guys, you know, just let's win the football
game and let's just move on.
Speaker 10 (15:17):
We don't have to plant any flags anywhere. That's just
it's but this part of collegiate you know football right now.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Yeah, well, I mean I still believe you win with class,
you lose with class. But both of those teams, both
of those sides were wrong in what they did and
how they I get Ohio State, Hey, we got humbled.
You're not going to you beat us, and now you're
going to do that. There's no other rivalry like this.
I get that.
Speaker 5 (15:42):
Yeah, but but and Dan, you know this, this rivalry
was going on before these young people even born.
Speaker 10 (15:50):
There was no flag planting.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
So it's just it's kind of evolved in this you
know things of all, and if you allow it to happen,
it becomes oh, you.
Speaker 10 (16:00):
Can do that too. You know, it's a copycat world.
Me know that that. That's cool. Let's go do that. No,
let's stop that.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
As a player, were you ever involved in a fight,
like a brawl team versus team?
Speaker 9 (16:13):
Let me think about that in the years that I played, No,
even not even with the You know what, we had
a little bit of incident one time with the Cowboys
with that star.
Speaker 10 (16:25):
That's playing in the middle of that field. But he didn't.
It wasn't too bad. It was kind of like, okay,
it was like the star, Okay, we get the star. Okay.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
The difference of coaching in snow like last night in
Buffalo as opposed to just regular conditions. As a coach,
what changes.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Well, obviously depending on how bad it gets and how
the field obviously takes the snow, you become a little
bit more conservative. Now here's the crazy part, Dan, And
you know this, you've been around.
Speaker 10 (16:59):
Football, was that man? The thing that sometimes people don't understand.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
They always ask the question about, you know, why are
they so concerned with the.
Speaker 10 (17:08):
Quarterback's hand size? Well, any of.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Them Northern teams that play outside, it's critical the quarterback
has big hands. It's critical when you play outside because
of these kind of conditions. And you watched it unfold
yesterday with Josh Allen, who might be the MVP of
the league. His ability to carry the ball at times
with one hand.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
It seemed like it was throwing.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Everybody else's clipping.
Speaker 5 (17:32):
Around with the ball he's to carry it like, oh man,
we're good for that puts down he ran when they
pushed it to it.
Speaker 10 (17:37):
He had the ball in one hand. He's vomiting it.
And I'm going, there's the big hand deal.
Speaker 5 (17:41):
And because of the wind, the elements, guys with big
hands and you Dan, you know football, you've gone back
as far as you think about all those teams, the
Pittsburgh Seed. There's all those teams that played outdoors back
in the days, right, they had big hand quarterbacks.
Speaker 10 (17:56):
It's just part of the deal. And when the snow
shows up, you get it. I got a guy that
can function.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
He can throw the ball in these conditions, he can
carry the ball, he can get the ball from the center.
Speaker 10 (18:05):
We're good.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Justin Tucker is lost.
Speaker 10 (18:11):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Have you ever been around a kicker who is suffering
whatever he's suffering, the yips or just in his head.
Speaker 10 (18:21):
Yeah, you've seen it. And I think coach is smart
enough to know he's sticking with his guy.
Speaker 5 (18:26):
But during practice, now, unannounced, when you're practicing, he says, ball,
m We'll.
Speaker 10 (18:31):
Say we're gonna kick a field goal right in the
middle of practice. It's not even announced.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
He says, hey, Feiel go, let's go, and you bring
him out to and you put him in an area
where you get it inside the thirty to let him see.
Speaker 10 (18:44):
Him make it. Just you want him to make some
kicks in front of the team. You don't plan it.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
It's kind of in practice.
Speaker 10 (18:50):
I'm gonna go and you tell the coaches.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
We go to practice that week and say, look, in
this period, I'm gonna call or kick, and then this
other period I'm gonna call for a kick.
Speaker 10 (19:02):
And it's kind of unannounced.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
See you catch them off guard and go, hey, line up,
let's kick the ball. And players will talk to look
at what it is about kick the ball. You want
to see him make it. You want to see him
make it right, and that's all you can do. They're
gonna stick with their guy.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
When I was playing basketball, coach would say such and such,
go into the free throw line. If he makes it,
we're done with practice. If he misses, we have to run.
But he wanted to have that element of put some
pressure on you before you get pressure on you, and
then see how you do. We're talking to the former coach.
(19:39):
ESPN football analyst Herm Edwards. When you look at the Bears,
the Bears organization.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
You see what.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
I see an organization and that needs to be relevant
in the fact that they are Chicago Bears. And there's certain
teams in this league need to be relevant. The Giants,
the New York Giants need to be relevant. They need
to be good, they need to be competitives. They found
themselfs a quarterback. They got a quarterback. There ain't no
doubt about it. Everybody who's hollering.
Speaker 8 (20:09):
What kind of guy?
Speaker 5 (20:10):
Oh, he's a quarterback? You got your self quarterback? Now,
how do you fix it?
Speaker 10 (20:14):
Right? They're in they're in the most competitive vision division
in football, the NFC North.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
Right now, they've got three teams over there with obviously
probably going to the playoffs, to be quite honest. And
so now you've got a Chicago team that's looking up
at all those teams.
Speaker 10 (20:28):
You have the key position in place, quarterback.
Speaker 8 (20:30):
They have some good players going forward.
Speaker 10 (20:33):
Now, who's going to be the coach who's going to
fix this? Right?
Speaker 5 (20:38):
Because that's what you know. Every coach is hired. He's
always coming in generally to fix something. You know, how
do you fix it? Well, they have to worry about
the quarterback. He's proven he can play he can play
in any conditions. He can play in the win, he
can play in the cold. He's gotten better as a
season has developed. And they're in a competitive division.
Speaker 10 (20:55):
But you know this, I mean football, it's it's it's
a it's a footing game. All of a sudden, they've
lost some close games.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
That one they lost this week, not calling obviously you
may be a timeout when he could have tied.
Speaker 10 (21:10):
It to what it. It's stuff like that that get you.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
Yeah, I agree with you. They found their quarterback. Now
the question. I thought that they were a playoff caliber team.
But and you know, I bring this up a lot
when we look at the Chiefs, Oh, they get lucky
and they win these games. Close games come down to
coaching and quarterback play. And so you have two Hall
of famers, two of the best who've ever done this.
(21:36):
You have a decided advantage over a second year coach
and a quarterback that's probably a backup quarterback in aid
and no common So that's a decided advantage that the
Chiefs have here, and they take advantage of that.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
Great point in the fact that you've always say this,
when you have a great quarterback, you're going if we
get the last possession.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Yeah, it's over.
Speaker 10 (22:02):
We're gonna win.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
He's gonna find a way to win. That's what the
great ones do. And you sit there and you smile.
You go, okay, we're good.
Speaker 10 (22:08):
We're good.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
The time.
Speaker 10 (22:11):
You're gonna win.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Okay, But what was that feeling like is a former
defensive back? Was there a quarterback when he had the ball,
You're on the field.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
And you go, damn it, we're gonna lose.
Speaker 10 (22:22):
My rookie year when the Dallas Cowboys were rolling. That's Starbacker, right,
We're playing the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Rice.
Speaker 10 (22:29):
You know, I'm all excited.
Speaker 8 (22:30):
I'm a rookie, I'm a starter.
Speaker 10 (22:32):
We're playing the Cowboys and I'm going, hey man, we're
leaving this thing. And I'm in the huggle and it's.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
The fourth quarter and a couple of vetterans looked at
me and said, rook don't start smiling.
Speaker 10 (22:41):
He's got the ball. Rogers tharbacker. I'm going, what does
that mean? Sure enough? Right down the field, like, oh boy,
I see what you mean now.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Rogers Stabach is underrated.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
He really is, because he had that short career because
of the military.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
He averaged eight yards of carry.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
I believe I mean unbelievable like that was when guys
weren't really running.
Speaker 10 (23:06):
No, you're you're right, no, And you know what, here's
another one.
Speaker 5 (23:09):
I'm gonna bring up to another one who got the
ball at the end and you go, oh, we're in trouble.
Frank Turkeeton, Sir Francis, we called him, Sir Francis target.
Speaker 10 (23:18):
God tell you what.
Speaker 5 (23:18):
But unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
How do you explain Russell Wilson.
Speaker 10 (23:23):
Oh, you know what, I'm happy for Russell Wilson. Uh,
because all of the anguish that Pittsburgh Steeler fans had.
What are we doing? Why is he playing? He just
threw for four hundred yards four hundred.
Speaker 5 (23:39):
This is the Pittsburgh Steelers, you know, the one that
turned around to give the running the ball.
Speaker 10 (23:42):
They want to win twelve to six.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
And Mike Common, obviously a Hall of Fame coach, he
knows playing the Cincinnati Bengals with Joe Burrows, who is
an outstanding football player, and it's a shame they let
the runner go and that it's all on Joe Burrow's hands.
Before this week, he had thrown one hundred plus passes.
He was throwing, averaging fifty paths of the game. He
(24:07):
got no shot doing that, You had no shot. Well,
if pittsbirsht tels look at this game, go, hey know what, guys,
we can't win this one thirteen to ten.
Speaker 10 (24:15):
We're got to score some points. And Russell was cooking
with gas. Now, I mean he is getting better every week.
Speaker 5 (24:21):
And this team all of a sudden, it's like, oh,
Pittsburgh Tennis is getting a lot better. Probably the Baltimore
Ravers are getting in their own way. They got one
hundred and one fouls. One hundred and one.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
That kills you.
Speaker 10 (24:37):
It's just it's death to you. I don't care how
good you are. You can't get penalties like that. And
this is what they're doing.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
And the Pitts first deals are quality going okay, Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
Right, It's interesting if the Eagles played the Lions this weekend,
who would you take, that's say, neutral field Eagles lines.
Speaker 5 (25:00):
The way the Eagles are playing in the last two weeks,
two road wins, they're playing pretty good, man. And here's
the key for me with the Eagles. I wanted to
see how they were going to play the Rams on
the road with a veteran quarterback. Some talented receivers, the
way they could throw the ball. Their defensive line dominated them.
(25:22):
That's taking place now that.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Front is going.
Speaker 5 (25:25):
Those young players they have in the back of the secondary,
now they've gotten better.
Speaker 10 (25:29):
The offense is no longer.
Speaker 5 (25:31):
Oh Hurst can run rpl No, you turn around to
give it to twenty six and.
Speaker 10 (25:36):
See what he can do. Now, that's another story.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
The Giants allowed number twenty six to catch a cab
and come down to Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
He caught a cab.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
We'll pay your cab fair.
Speaker 10 (25:48):
We don't need you.
Speaker 8 (25:49):
You go.
Speaker 10 (25:50):
Really, he's gonna run for two thousand yards, by the way.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
More valuable Josh Allen or Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 10 (25:58):
Josh Allen, Josh Allen, He's he might be the m
VP candidate right now.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Oh, I think it's his to lose.
Speaker 10 (26:05):
Yeah, I love him. He's more than a quarterback. He
is as a football player. You don't reminds me.
Speaker 5 (26:13):
Well, we'll take us back there where we want to go.
John Elway right, strong, big ron rugged, right, that kind
of guy.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Who would you rather have to start your franchise?
Speaker 10 (26:28):
John Elway or Alan? You would ask you? I think
either one, You're you're gonna be.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Pretty no, no, no, we don't do either one.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
Okay, Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna pay this because I
played against him and I respect him.
Speaker 10 (26:46):
I'm gonna say, Johnill, okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
Always good to talk to you, you two, my friend.
You'll be well now, Thank you, thank you. That's herm Edwards.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patricks weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
I just walked by Paulie and PAULI goes, there's only
three teams that can win the national title in college football.
I go say that, all right before we get to
Paul Finebaum. I'm going to ask you the question and
then I'll let Paul Finebaum judge your answer.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
Right now, based off who's in who's out.
Speaker 7 (27:27):
I think there's three teams that can win the national title, Oregon,
Texas and Notre Dame. They're the only three teams playing
consistently good football.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
It's bringing Paul Finbaum, host of the Paul Finebaum Show,
Voice of the SEC.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
What do you think of that? Paul?
Speaker 8 (27:42):
It's not a bad answer, I might add, Georgia, although
I realize we all just watch an eight overtime game.
But I think they're capable and I'm gonna surprise you here,
there's one more who could win it. I thought they
were the most talented team a week ago, and then
I forgot who was coaching them, Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
Ohio State's loss at home to Michigan or Alabama's loss
to Oklahoma.
Speaker 8 (28:10):
What was worse in your opinion, it was Ohio State
because Alabama it was on the road. They're not a
perfect team, but I didn't quite spend twenty million dollars
like Ohio State to fill out their roster, I think.
And also the narrative. I mean, we're talking about three
straight losses, all to Jim harrorball in what Ohio State
(28:33):
Michigan fans believe is the biggest game in the country,
and then it happens again. Dan, That's inexplicable. There's no
excuse for it, because I really thought going into the
season that of Ryan day here I get to the lead,
lost that game and somehow was embarrassed or didn't make
it to the championship game, that he probably should be fired.
(28:57):
And quite frankly, that hasn't changed. I know the athletic
director came out last night with one of these word
salads saying, oh he's our guy. That same athletic director,
ross By Yorke, you may remember, two years ago, in
the middle of the season, said similar things about Jimbo
Fisher and then at the end of the season fired
him and gave him a seventy six million dollars goodbye gift.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Okay, if there wasn't a twelve team playoff, Ryan Day
would be what.
Speaker 8 (29:26):
I think he would be fired, and quite frankly, it
would be justified. I am well aware. His record is
sixty six and ten. He's been to the CFP Championship game,
he's been to the playoffs a couple of times. But
in states like that, and then I don't need to
educate you. You're from one of those states, that game
is really bigger than life. And you know, after the
(29:48):
first one, after the second one, after the third one,
but after the fourth one. And I'll tell you the
line that got me more than any other line. It
wasn't his coaching, which is atrocious. It was the fact
that he defended his players for getting into a brawl
that required pepper gas and who knows what else defending
(30:08):
the field. I mean, Ryan, you had all year to
prepare for that game and sixteen minutes and four hours
in real time to win the game. What your players
that after the game was beyond embarrassing. And I know
there's a whole other narrative today, but that single statement alone,
in my mind, was fireable.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
What's happened with the flag planting that all of a
sudden it's become the rage with the kids. What's do
you think the NCAA does anything with this?
Speaker 8 (30:36):
Yeah, I mean they showed. I think ultimately it's up
to the individual conferences, and I feel very certain that
conferences are going to put an end to it. I mean,
it is too dangerous. We both did on fields at
the end of the game. It's chaotic, and then when
you have brawls with players, big guys with your shoulder
pads and helmets, and there are a lot of there
are a lot of idle people on those fields that
(30:58):
could that could really be hurt or killed. And give
Steve Sarkisian credit for Texas coach. He saw this all
day long happening and he warned his team, if you
if we win this game, which they did at Texas,
A and M don't do it, and it's just absurd.
There's no reason for it. I mean, I really like
guys who who lose the home game and then they're
(31:21):
going to go out and try to win a fight.
I mean, where are we? What's what's happening here?
Speaker 2 (31:26):
If Georgia had lost to Georgia Tech dot dot dot,
it would have.
Speaker 8 (31:34):
Not been the end of the season for them, Incredibly,
they would have still gone to Atlanta with a chance
to not only win the SEC, but but get a
a first round by That's how crazy the system is.
But we already knew that it was. What you saw
in that game as the clock strug midnight was why
(31:55):
Kirby Smart is the best coach in the country. I mean,
he finally said, Okay, I know we got a defensive coordinator,
but I'm making every call right now, and and he
dialed it up correctly literally every time. Of course, you
get a time out in overtimes. That's a lot of timeouts.
And maybe we can talk about the over and maybe
the overtime system needs to be chafed if that's absurd
(32:17):
to watch two point conversions over and over again. But
it was really impressive and By the way, I'm not
making excuses for Georgia, but Georgia Tech as it went
over Miami, a team that is sitting on the on
the CFP bubble right now.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
The USC loss. I know you've expressed your thoughts with
Lincoln Riley. Notre Dame look really good, really good. I
don't know if like Notre Dame may be the story
coming away from that as opposed to USC getting really
embarrassed at home. What should be the story what Notre
Dame did or what USC didn't do?
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Again?
Speaker 8 (32:55):
Well, I was listen, I was impressed with Notre Dame,
and I think now they are a legitimate national national champion.
But with someone in California, explain to me why Lincoln Riley,
as of almost noon Eastern time, is still the head
coach at Southern cal What's what has he done? He
had the one season dan with Caleb Williams last year
(33:15):
was I thought that was a disaster. But then again,
I forgot about this season and considering their record is
five hundred that includes a win over LSU in the
opening game. I mean, I don't know when I've seen
a coach underperformed. I was wondering earlier in the year,
maybe somebody in the NFL would hire him, but hire
him as what I mean, I mean maybe a coordinator.
(33:37):
I mean I say, I think I think he is
completely out outlived. He's usefulness at Southern cal He shouldn't
be there any longer.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Yeah, but I can't imagine that they're going to be,
you know, in the business, a big buyouts here.
Speaker 8 (33:49):
I'm not either. I know a lot of people laughed
at me in July when I made that outrageous Dion
Sanders for Lincoln Riley take, which I remember hearing on
the Dan Patrick Show a few times. By the way,
I mean, I've been right and wrong on Deon one
hundred times, as we all have. But I just think
that continuing on, especially now in the portal era, what's
(34:13):
the appeal? Remember remember when he he mosied out there
a couple of years ago, and uh, you know, and
was going to make that place sizzling in in tintral Town.
But I mean, I don't, I don't get it. And
I listen, I know, I get accused of calling for
coaches firings all the time. I really don't. But in
this case I think it's legitimate because they USC is
(34:34):
one of the golden names in college football, and now
it's become a laughing stock.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
Dion's done a really good job here with with recruiting.
I think does that put an end to Dion leaving
Colorado at least this next season.
Speaker 8 (34:49):
I think until the last NFL job is filled, his
name is going to be dancing out there because I
you know, I maybe maybe I just don't believe when
coach to say anything, but the fact that you know
he's happy out there and now that his son and
best recruit ever are leaving to me makes me wonder
a little bit. It's just it's I mean, he he
(35:11):
beat He beat the house this year. I think in
party beat it because he is a good coach. He
had too, not only too, but two of the best
players I've seen in college football in recent years. He
also took advantage of a big twelve that was really deluded.
It was an okay lead, but by no means what
he had last year in the Pac twelve. So he
mastered it. I mean, he didn't get to the championship game,
(35:33):
he won't get to the playoffs, but he still did
a remarkable job.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
He's Paul Fine bamb of the Mothership host of the
Paul Fine baumb Show Heisman Trophy race over.
Speaker 8 (35:43):
I think so, I know, you know, fans and Boise
want to make a case for their man, but I
think Travis Ona wrapped it up Friday, and I mean
he's dynamic. You know. Again, I don't know why the
Jim Thorpon committee didn't think he was one of the
best defensive players in the country. But those are little
things that we make a big deal about. But I
will be shocked if he doesn't win the Heisman Trophy.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Does Colorado try to extend Deon? I wonder.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
I don't know how that works with you know, these
coaches and then we're going to give you like West
Virginia just you know, a year after giving their coach
an extension, they fired him. So I don't know in
the loyalty level there. But I haven't heard anything about
Colorado and dim Yeah.
Speaker 8 (36:24):
What what what these agents do? Now there's a there's
a handful of agents. Now Deon's different, He's got a
whole team. But I mean, you basically blow to rumor
that Deon's going somewhere and then the next day the
athletic director reading the social media goes, goes hyperbolic and
uh and gives them an extension.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (36:42):
I can't imagine they wouldn't extend him. But but I
think Deon's going to figure out what he wants to do.
I mean, I think, I frankly think he would make
a very good NFL coach. Probably not in Dallas, but
there'll be a few openings. Oh actually there may be
by the end of the day, but we have one already,
couple of more to come.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
What do you make of Andrew Luck as the GM
of Stanford football.
Speaker 8 (37:06):
I thought that was a good move. I mean, Andrew
Luck is an incredibly smart guy and that's his school.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
But what is the role of a GM?
Speaker 8 (37:16):
Very important question. The GM does the same thing in
college that they do in the pros. I mean they
are in charge of personnel. They watched the portal DAN
which is now open. They deal with the money however
that works in college football, and nobody is exactly sure.
And they really run the player personnel side of college football,
(37:36):
and that's maybe the most important position in college football
that nobody really knows about or understand. I think he'll
be great at.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Most important game coming up this weekend will be.
Speaker 8 (37:47):
What well, probably the ACC game because you have SMU.
They are now in the ACC, in case anybody missed
that story, and they're playing Clemson, which just got knocked
out of the Sea FP the other day by losing
at home to South Carolina. But then Syracuse beat Miami,
So I think Clemson can literally here we go in
(38:08):
NCAA basketball talking mark, they can steal a bid by
getting that if they lose their out that's the fourth loss.
SMU probably stays alive. Miami is the one that's Miami
and Alabama are probably literally on that bubble sweating it out.
The SEC game will not affect anything the ACC game will.
(38:29):
I mean there's a couple Obviously there are other games
that affect one bid, but this game could affect several bids.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
But I wonder are we getting to the close, getting
close to the point of getting rid of conference championship games?
Because what's at risk if you suffer another loss? And
like Georgia, you're saying Georgia is safe even if they
lose the SEC title game.
Speaker 8 (38:52):
Yeah, because they have two losses and they have the
best win on the board right now in the country.
They have a win over Texas, which will be number
two tomorrow night, so that that matters. I mean, I
don't understand this committee. They value top twenty five teams.
I mean, there's some teams in the top twenty five,
DAN that are just futurred, but they you know, they
get they got any I mean, there's some teams in
(39:12):
the top ten that aren't that great. But ultimately I
think you like, who have you beaten? Georgia has has
a great win. Alabama, by the way, has some epic
losses that you mentioned one Vanderbilts, the other two six
lost teams, but they do have a win over Georgia,
so that will that will put them at least into consideration.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
Good to talk to you as always, Paul, thanks for
joining us.
Speaker 8 (39:37):
Pleasure Dan, thank you.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
That's Paul Finebaum.
