Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Welcome to the program already in progress. It's hour two
on this Tuesday. Todd's here, Seaton's here, Marv Paully yours
truly in the backroom. Guys. Basketball tonight. Can the Pacers
do it again? They're nine point underdogs at the Cabs
and the Warriors. They try to keep the trend going
by stealing game one on the road. There's seven point
(00:25):
underdogs Nix come back beat the Celtics. Celtics missed forty
five three pointers, the Nuggets beating the thunder as Aaron
Gordon at the buzzer, and they take Game one. Joker
by the way, and oh by the way of forty
two and twenty two rebounds. Stat of the Day is
always brought to you by the great folks at Panini America,
(00:45):
the official trading cards of the show. And make sure
you download the app if you haven't done so our
streaming partner Peacock go to Danpatrick dot com. You can
click on these spirits tab and a great off that
we uh well, it's been ten years since it was
last available and we've been working on it for a while.
(01:06):
It's an award winner. Go to Danpatrick dot com. Play
the day We had that with Aaron Gordon. There were
a couple of plays of the day, certainly with what
the Knicks did winning in overtime. And if you're a
Boston Celtic fan, I guess you just have to chalk
it up. Is one of those nights and we won't
have another one of those. But if you're the Knicks,
(01:28):
the Celtics couldn't have played worse in the second half
and you won by three in overtime, and might concern
me a little bit. But uh, if you're a Nick team,
you you'll take any win you're going to get. Uh,
they'll be hard to come by. Do I think Boston
will have another one of these games? Probably not. Can
the Knicks steal another game? Probably so eight seven seven
(01:52):
to three DP show email address DP at danpatrick dot com,
Twitter handle a DP show The Great doc Emrick, the
former hockey play by Play Hall of Famer will join
us coming up a little bit, and Gilbert Arenas, former
NBA All Star favorite of the show. He'll join us
in the final hour of the program. Talked a little
bit about the Ravens cutting justin Tucker. They had football
(02:14):
reasons to cut him. Now we know why they cut him,
but they can't say that they cut him because it's
football related. He spent thirteen years there, probably going to
be a Hall of Famer, certainly has the credentials, but
you have these civil suits that are still ongoing, and
he's under investigation by the NFL. The NFL also announced
(02:36):
the draft in twenty twenty seven will be in Washington,
d C. Next year, of course it will be in Pittsburgh.
Eight seven to seven three DP show pull question Seaton,
what are we going to go with an hour two?
Speaker 3 (02:48):
We have many up there right now. Twinch teen will
advance Nick Nuggets or neither right now with forty four
percent of that vote is neither No Nuggets at forty
two percent. The Nicks only fourteen percent of that vote.
Nobody's got a lot of faith in the next. We
also have which do you prefer analytics or gut?
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Right now?
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Eighty six percent of the audience say they prefer the gut.
I also put up there, which leads to more wins
analytics or gut right now, that's at sixty six percent
say gut. That is the wrong answer. Those analytics right
there are very wrong, and then we also have Aaron
Gordon Hall of Fame, very good or pretty good. Right now,
(03:30):
pretty good is leading at fifty eight percent of that vote.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Six percent have him as a Hall of Fame. No.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
I also think that we need to establish which is
better good or pretty good, because there's a lot of
debate happening right now on social media about is good
better than pretty good?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Or is pretty good better than good? Okay, but let's
say your wife comes downstairs and you're going out, and
you say you look pretty or you look good. Pretty
is going to win out over good.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
I don't that's that doesn't work.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Well, you know, because I could I could easily say like,
oh you look good, and she's gonna like that a
lot more than oh you look pretty.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Okay, but it's pretty, it's good, it's pretty good or good.
Isn't that what we're kind of saying.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I know I was trying to cheat a little bit toime.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
I don't see how pretty.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Good would be better than good, especially using your comparison.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
How about this if your wife cooks dinner and you say,
and she says, how was it? And you say pretty good?
You say how was it good? I think pretty good
is much worse. It's pretty good?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
No, but I could say it. I could sell it
because I'm an actor. Hey, how was dinner? Hunt? Pretty good?
Or if she says how is dinner? I go good.
It's all in the voice, the inflection, yes, Tom, and
I'd say.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Back to what would have made it good instead of
just pretty good?
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Dan after dinner? Well, Paulie wants to come up with
a Hall of very Good All Star game. Of course,
all of very good. Aaron Gordon is not a Hall
(05:17):
of Famer.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
Keeps hitting these shots.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
He's a good player. He's a good player. Sometimes he
has really good nights. Really good. Okay, is really good?
Really good? Maybe we take out pretty good and put
really good. So the Hall of Fame, Hall of very Good,
Hall of really Good, and then the Hall of Good.
So we take out the pretty Okay. Here's Paulie's our
(05:42):
all Star game lineup of the Hall of very Good.
Kevin Johnson, Latrell, Spreewell, Paysia Stoyakovic, Sean Kemp, Germaine, O'Neil, Okay,
Penny Hardaway, Rip Hamilton, Antoine Jamison, Rashid Wallace, Elton Brand, Okay,
(06:06):
is everybody in their Hall of very Good?
Speaker 7 (06:11):
Thanks?
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Don't you have some Hall of famers in your Hall
of very Good?
Speaker 6 (06:16):
I don't think any of those guys have made or
are making the Hall of Fame. I got to check
on Kevin Johnson. I don't think he made it.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Okay, Sean Kemp is not a Hall of Famer. Penny
Hardaway not.
Speaker 8 (06:28):
A Hall of Famer.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Injuries grabbed him. Rashid Wallace, Okay, yes, Marvin.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Now I'll just nod my head because this is a really,
really good list. Okay, I'd replace one of them with
Gilbert Arenas.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
But okay, just because he's joining us next hour?
Speaker 5 (06:46):
No, no, no, no no, he was a Bucky for three
year stretch? Was all right?
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yes? Yes, tom So?
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Who wins that game? And why? I love the rosters?
So let's take it to the next step. Who do
you want? Who do you want to coach?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Who do I want to coach?
Speaker 5 (06:59):
Who do you want to coach?
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Slash, Who do you think you have a better chance
of winning with?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
I don't know if i'd get along with Spree.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
That team is a tendency to choke. Anyways, Wow, come on, stiltily,
that was a long time ago with Peter.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
You're better than that, that much better.
Speaker 6 (07:16):
Yes, Yes, if you look at those two lists, and
I think the answer is obvious. The player you said
he's going to the Hall of Fame someday, it's got
to be Penny Hardaway after his rookie or second year.
Only injuries could have stopped that beautiful to watch.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Or jealousy Sean Kemp jealousy with Shack Penny.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Sean Kemp made six straight All Star teams and had
a run where he averaged like nineteen and eleven for
about six years.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
He should have been better, yep. I just remember that
series with the Bulls in the NBA Finals, and I
thought for most of that series he was the best
player on the floor. He was just and they had
no answer for him. Should have been better.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
Rashie Wallace is on that list to me as far
as like guys that are gifted, He's like in that
Chris Weber territory was like, man, there's nothing that guy
can't do. And he was a stretch. He was an
underrated stretch. Four.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah, he just he was Draymond before Draymond. He was
his own worst eneme great shooter. I mean, that's the
guy who should have been better. Jake in Houston. Hi, Jake,
what's on your mind today?
Speaker 9 (08:31):
Good morning, Dan.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Can you hear me? Okay, Yes I can, Jake, Awesome.
Speaker 9 (08:35):
Hey, I just want to talk about this Hall of
Fame versus the Hall of Verry Good. And I'm really
having a hard time when we talk about Draymond Green
making the Hall of Fame because you're talking a lot
about numbers, and if you look at his career numbers,
it's like eight, six and five. He never averaged double
digit rebounds, and so I'm just really having a hard
time with him making the Hall of Fame. And I
(08:56):
think he's talked his waiting in the Hall of Fame.
I just want to get your opinion on that because
we're talking a lot of there's a lot of good
players like Rashid Wallace, all these guys are talking about that.
I would take over Draymond Green today.
Speaker 10 (09:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
You know, Draymond is a guy you have to watch,
and you know that can be really good and it
can be questionable. But I just think when you look
at the we'll look back on the soul, the heart
and soul of Golden State, and it will be him
for better or for worse. But he's the kind of
guy that you want him on your team, you don't
(09:29):
want to play against. And I think being a defensive
Player of the Year a couple of times, he's the
best passer on the team, has been pretty much throughout
his career. He did all the dirty work. I mean,
if you're putting Ben Wallace in, then you have to
put in Draymond Green. And he won. Now did he
cost them another title, yes, but he helped you win
(09:53):
titles and the numbers in this case, lie, I think
that if he's getting in, and he'll get in, it'll
be just in tangibles. Yeah, paulling.
Speaker 6 (10:05):
Draymond gets in, like all the Pittsburgh Steelers get in.
It's part of a run, and you get credit for
a run, which helps your Hall of Fame case. I
think Clay Thompson has five All Star appearances and then
he missed two seasons. He's going to the Hall of Fame.
But face value, he's not a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Well, they won titles and he was he probably considered
the second best shooter in NBA history, but his team won.
If Clay is by himself and playing you know someone
for Charlotte, then he's gonna be Bradley Beal and be like,
oh man, he puts up good numbers, they don't mean anything,
(10:43):
but he'll be a Hall of Famer. Andrew in Washington,
Hi Andrew, what's on your mind? Good morning, Dan Dennev.
Speaker 8 (10:51):
Thanks for taking my call. I do have a question
about the dan Nets, but I would say Marvin needs
to know his Yukon Husky Graduate Hall of Famers. Rip
Hamill's on Paul's list is a Hall of Famer as
a twenty twenty two, so I can't be in the
Hall of very good. Secondly, I think that the Celtics
just they will stay with their analytics. If you think
(11:11):
about it, they went for fifteen for sixty, well they
would have went for seventeen for sixty they would have won.
They don't want to try a different rhythm before getting
back their rhythm that won a championship. So my question
on the dan answer is this last week you gave
out a lot of technicals. You ran a couple of
dan Nets for some segments. Do they have a limit
of technicals they get before they miss a show without
(11:32):
pay No?
Speaker 2 (11:34):
I mean, if that was the case, then Fritzy would
probably go a couple of weeks without pay. But I
can't do that. It's their boss, and hr can't do that.
Speaker 6 (11:45):
Yes, Polly, just to defend my list, Rip Hamilton is
not in the basketball Hall of Fame. He is an
a collegiate basketball Hall of Fame, Okay, which is so.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
What I'm going to do now is I'm going to
bar Andrew wow from calling in for a week. I'm
gonna run him. If you're gonna correct Andrew, I I
gotta I gotta run you, Okay, I'll accept the punishment.
Ain't fair enough?
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Yes, Yes, tom week seems harsh, you know, like a
player will get a one or two game suspension. Can
we just say maybe tomorrow's show.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
No, I'm gonna run the rest of the week.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
It's only Tuesday, though. That's strong.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
He can appeal, he can appeal to you, Yes, but
he's appealing to you. That's what happens with the commissioner,
Roger Goodell. I'm gonna suspend you. Can I appeal? Yes?
Who am I appealing to me? You're still suspended?
Speaker 6 (12:35):
Yes, it is too bad that Richard Hamilton wasn't taking
off the Hall of Very good All Star team because
Jerry Stackhouse was going to write in take that spot.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Okay, the two guard all right, Nathan in Austin, I.
Speaker 7 (12:47):
Need taking time long time. I gave you a call
about a month ago about my wedding. I answered some
solicit advice about my now mother in law, my me
to tell her how beautiful they looked, and making sure
no one gets too drink at the speeches. I was
(13:08):
actually thinking about your advice as I was waiting in
the groom suite, and before walking up to the altar,
I told her she looked beautiful and she was so happy.
The whole day went really great, with no major hiccups.
We had a great time, and most importantly, I got
her favorite tequila, so she had a great day.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Well, congratulations, Nathan. Yeah. Uh. Matt in Alaska, Hi Matt,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 11 (13:36):
Hey Dan? How are you doing this morning? Hello Dan Eds,
It's good to talk to you guys up here in Alaska.
You guys are on from five in the morning until
eight in the morning.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
I'm already at.
Speaker 11 (13:45):
Work where the rubber meets the road, and that last
segment with Tom Chambers and Good versus Great just had
me cracking. Up, and then the uh the Marlborough lady
called in with her raspy voice. Man, I was dying,
you guys, just keep me saying in the morning. I
have to say Rashid Wallace because I'm originally from Portland
and he was on the Trailblazers in my impressionable high
(14:06):
school years. Lived across the street and one door down
from a buddy of mine, and he let us play
hoops on a hoop anytime we wanted. Great guy. Definitely
a Hall of Famer. Probably a little biased on that one,
but latreuseret. Will you choke out your coach man, You're
probably not getting in the Hall of Fame, but I
would I would definitely put you in the Hall of
It's good.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Thank you, Matt. Thank you. Phone call from Alaska. John
in Albany, Hi John, WIT's on your mind today?
Speaker 12 (14:34):
Hi Dan, First time, long time, really frustrated with this
Thunder coach. I think he totally blew the game yesterday.
They were playing a free throw game when they clearly
had an advantage up three, it was like they were
behind instead. And they also the Thunder also have a
(14:56):
great defense when they foul Joker with twelve points six
seconds left, I was like, what are you doing? Denver's
approven championship team that has been there before. Now you're
taking a young team and you're putting them on the
free throw line and if they miss a free throw
now they possibly could lose the game. When they should
(15:18):
have just played it out and see what happened. The
worst thing that would have happened was they would have
went into overtime and then I couldn't believe my eyes
once with ten seconds left, after Shay Alexander failed them
out with that play with the layup, I'm thinking, Okay,
(15:38):
it's going to be over now. Then they foul Crusoe
fouls Gordon in the backcourt with ten seconds ago.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Yeah, I know. I don't want to do play by
play on this, But that's analytics, John, That's what I
keep talking about. They played the analytics game and it
cost him and Denver hits a big shot, played the
analytics game and it costs them. Normally those teams win
these games, but you start to look at the philosophy
(16:09):
and you look at the numbers. It's situational basketball and
it certainly cost Denver or cost Okay, see last night,
we'll take a break, more phone calls. Coming up one
of our favorites, the greatest play by playvoice the NHL
has ever known, Doc Emrick, will join us. Coming up next.

former NBA player documentary coming out on his life. We'll
talk to him coming up in about forty minutes from now.
Doc Emrick is a Hall of Famer and former lead
play by play voice for NBC's NHL coverage. And now,
I don't know what kind of play by play you're
doing in retirement. Are you doing any play by play
(18:00):
in retirement?
Speaker 10 (18:01):
Doc only describing dog walks and occasional visits to the
grocery store. That's pretty much it.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Give me a little bit of that.
Speaker 10 (18:14):
There's milk. It expires on the twenty eighth of May.
I oh, there's the there's the first of June. I'm
going to take the first of June because it'll last longer.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Okay, all right, so if you're watching hockey, you're not
doing play by play.
Speaker 10 (18:29):
No, no, but I'm sure enjoying it. My goodness, is
it great. We've had some wonderful games to finish up
the last round and it's just spectacular. And I guess
I've grown spoiled. This is what we get every time
at this year. It's It's why Charles Barkley always talks
(18:51):
about sneaking behind the set when he's doing basketball and
watching hockey. It's just engrossing. It's wonderful, and it's it's
what the sport is all about.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
But you get jealous when you look at these incredible
finishes and like you wish you were doing it. No.
Speaker 10 (19:09):
No, I haven't regretted retirement once. I marvel at what
the guys do that are describing games now. But the
sport is so wonderful. I'm glad I had my years
at it, forty seven in total, but I don't regret
retiring the thing. When I was riding buses in the miners,
the one thing that I looked forward to was the
(19:33):
planes and the big hotels. And by the time the
forty seven years was up and we were in COVID,
the thing that I didn't particularly like were the planes
and the hotels. So I had my time and it
was wonderful. I have so many great memories. I met
a lot of wonderful people, including yourself, and I'll never
(19:55):
forget the day that I was with you and the
Dan Netes mcglevin was in gold and I think it
was Fritzy who shot on him. He had a broom.
I believe somewhere in the archives there is tape of that.
But those are memories that I have that I'll always cherish.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
How do you come to the point where you go, now,
I'm going to retire because we see this with athletes.
I'm going to retire from this job in three years.
But you came to that decision? How did you come
to that?
Speaker 10 (20:27):
Well, in any thing where you have a motor skill,
which is in athletics as well, you like to make
your move before somebody makes it for you. And fortunately
with NBC, the hook was not out. But I had
had fifty years covering the sport, and I did forty
(20:49):
years at the NHL. And I think one thing too
that Covid did was just before we took the break
in February of twenty twenty, the league came out with
rules that were very necessary where we couldn't have anyone
between the benches, where we had to be six feet
(21:11):
with a boom mic away from all the coaches and
the players. We could not go into the dressing rooms anymore,
and that was where the fun was for me. In
addition to preparing and doing the games, was actually being
able to learn something more about the players that I
could share with somebody. And so all of those things
sort of came to the four at once. The numbers
(21:33):
of forty and fifty were kind of round numbers that
were even, and it seemed like a good time. I
had so many great memories that it was a great
time to be out.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
I was going to ask you, what's the first thing
to go on a play by play person, and it
sounds like your eyesight was the first thing to go.
Speaker 10 (21:52):
Yeah, I think that would be probably true. You and
I were together in London at the Olympics in twenty twelve,
and the one thing that happened there was that I discovered,
to my chagrin, when I was doing water polo that
I had cataracts, and so those were removed and my eyesight,
(22:15):
of course immediately got better, but you realize that those
are things that happened with age. But yeah, I don't
know that my eyesight was going, but you realize that
that does happen as you get older. But I think
the thing with me was that the travel was starting
to get to me and I wanted to be home more,
(22:36):
and all of those things added up to make for
the right decision and to get to watch these games now,
and especially the finishes that we had in the Game
sevens were you know, the come from behind third periods
in the Game sevens, as well as the come from
(22:56):
behind almost tie last night in Toronto. Those are exciting
and I do envy the guys that are doing the
games now, but I wouldn't want to be there. They
are having the time of their lives doing these games,
and I'm glad for them.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Talking to you, Doc Emrick, a member of the NHL
in Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. If I would have
talked to you twenty years ago, and I would have
said to you, you know, Gretzky's goal scoring record is
not safe. You would have said, what You're wrong?
Speaker 10 (23:29):
I would have said, yeah, I would have said, I
agree with you that it's I would have said it's safe.
But then we had Wayne Gretzky on at the All
Star Game in Saint Louis five years ago and he
was asked the question, can Ovechkin catch you? And he
said yes. And here's why. He's on a good team
(23:53):
that wins a lot of games, and he's healthy. He
rarely gets hurt. This year he did, to his credit,
he came back a bulldozer and he wound up eclipsing
the record in a marvelous ceremony that the NHL had
on Long Island. But the other thing is too, the
(24:15):
one thing that is often overlooked. He came into the
League of bull in the China shop and he would
hammer players. He was often the league leader in hits,
and he was again this year. He never stopped playing
his game, and yet he was the greatest goalscorer of
the modern era and now is the record goalscorer of
(24:37):
all time. And a guy that came in I'll never
forget the first time that we ever had him on
our telecast in New Jersey. Of course, we wanted to
interview Alex Obechki, and so he came in and politely
sat down and we had a technical difficulty on MSG
network and we said, Alex, we're sorry, we can't do
(24:59):
the interview. He said, no, you don't understand. I want
to do the interview, and we told him, no, we can't.
We've got a technical problem in the truck. We can't
do it. And so he got up and left. But
he really wanted to do everything the right way when
he first came here.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
If I said you can start your team with Ovechkin
or Crosby.
Speaker 10 (25:24):
I want them both because I want the playmaker and
I want the goals.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Do work that way, donk.
Speaker 10 (25:30):
Okay Crosby, And here's why, because you do need goal scorers.
I understand that. But Sid is the guy who is
always going to be prepared to play first on last off,
(25:53):
is always going to be a playmaker and a guy
that will lead by example. And that's not to say
that Alex's captain does on We saw what he did
with Mark Andre Fleury and they were arch rivals. Of
course for a long time. He has led by example too.
But here's an here's a story that showed what Alex
(26:16):
has grown into, and it would make that on the rare.
On the total of years Sid has done this in Pittsburgh,
but Alex has picked up that slack in the later
years in Washington. I was talking with Barry Trotz before
what turned out to be the last game that Washington
(26:38):
would play before they won the Stanley Cup championship, and
I said, can you retell a story that you told
me earlier in the year about about Ovechkin, And so
he did, and so I did tell this at the
end of the playoffs when Washington was winning the Stanley Cup.
It was that summer before and the Capitals had disappointed
(27:04):
again and Alex was getting married, and Barry was invited,
and so he went over to Moscow and attended the wedding.
He was invited to the reception, and Barry said, I'm
not going to go to a reception with a bunch
of my hockey players. I'll wait. So he had dinner
with Alex shortly thereafter, and he said, Alex, I've got
(27:29):
to talk to you seriously about what's coming ahead. There
is a lot of unhappiness in Washington, and there are
people who think it's your fault, and there are people
who think that it's the fault of some of your teammates,
and there is going to be change. You are going
to have to train like you never trained before. You
(27:52):
are going to have to be the first guy on
the ice, and you are going to have to be
this team's leader. It's not pleasant to think about, but
that's what's ahead. That fall, he came in and scored
seven goals in the first two games, and even though
Washington fell behind in their playoff series, they were rallied
(28:15):
and went ahead, and they went on and won the
Stanley Cup. And he's been the great leader ever since.
But Sid has been doing that ever since he came
to Pittsburgh. And so when you forced me into that
corner and the paint is still not dried, I choose Sid.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
What is it like when you know the game can
end at any moment, when when you get into sudden
death overtime? So as a play by play guy, what
you know, what is your game plan of how to
call it so you're on time with it or a
little bit ahead of the play as opposed to kind
of cleaning up after that.
Speaker 10 (28:54):
Yeah, you have to be right on it and with that,
and the referees tell me the same thing with that,
you have to be on it. But boy, you got
to be right, and you also have to be in
control of your emotions so that you don't overdo it.
This is about the players. It is not about yourself.
(29:17):
It's not about signature calls or anything else. By the way,
sidestep this for a minute. I need to pay tribute
to the referees who handle Game seven because those games
were thrilling because of them. They didn't want to be
them in the way. They didn't have a steady parade
to the penalty box because they were there on merit.
(29:41):
They didn't leave that behind. And they were nervous too,
I'll bet and you get nervous before and overtime in
a Stanley Cup Game seven. I've had some of those.
But yeah, you need to be on top of it.
You need to be right. And as I heard Larry Coleness,
the caller of the Kentucky Derby interview, you can't have
(30:01):
an eraser on your tongue, you can't take it back.
And so all of those things go into making this
kind of work exciting. And I always encourage young people
who are interested in it to get into it and
stay into it because it is certainly rewarding in a
great way. To make a living By the way, those
names are Wes McCauley, Daniel Roared, Jehanhye Beart, and Gord Dwyer.
(30:25):
Those are the four guys and stripes that handled those games.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
What hockey name gave you fits.
Speaker 10 (30:34):
Saragay nem cheen off, and it sure shouldn't have. I
was working with Bill Clement and we were doing and
I kept saying them cheaen off with an M. And
he said, say, nemknof, nemnoff, nemknoff. You can do it,
can't you? And I said, yeah, I can. And it
came down to where I if I said that over
(30:56):
and over again before the game, that it would it
came out more right than wrong. But it's an imperfect science,
isn't it. I mean, you guys have to talk three
hours in the morning, and it's not totally perfect, I suppose.
But I never did a perfect game. I mean, you
talk over and over all the time, and you do
(31:17):
make mistakes, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
We don't care about getting it right though, Doc. That's
the difference between.
Speaker 9 (31:24):
But you do.
Speaker 10 (31:26):
Is am? I looking at the team that's going to
be on celebrity family Feud?
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Is this the five? Yeah? Yeah, Okay, you've chosen. Yeah,
for better or for worse. Yes, any advice on celebrity
family feud, No.
Speaker 10 (31:46):
I think you should rely on your experience. And that's
my stat of the day. Oh, the number is eighty nine.
The experience that your team has going in, I think
will lead you to You have twenty six years in June,
Fritzy will have twenty three, Pauli has eighteen, Seaton has sixteen,
(32:09):
and Marvin has six. That's a total of eighty nine.
You rely on your experience, and I agree with what
you said last week. You're there to entertain. I mean,
it'd be nice if you could win, but the memory
will come from entertaining who And in gut versus analytics coach,
the coach that I would favor is you because I
(32:31):
think you're going to go on gut not analytics. Yeah, okay,
you guys were talking last week about Giannis and his
poor free throw percentage. When I was growing up, I
watched Wilk Chamberlain and he was terrible the foul line.
I looked it up. He was fifty one percent, and
I think you guys said that's about where Jannis was
(32:53):
last week.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Well, yeah, and somebody I'm sure, they've tried, but it's
it should be fluid. He doesn't have a fluid free throw.
It's it stops. It's almost like a ladder unfolding, and
that you just you got to make it. Start from
your legs and go all the way up and follow through,
you know, being a great free throw shooter that you are.
Speaker 10 (33:18):
Well, it's it's a new decade. So if I get
to New York, it's best of three and we will
try it yet again. I like that left hand bookshot
that I see every so often. Is that like the
koreem skyhook.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
That's fritzy. Ah okay, I thought it was you. No, no, no,
no no, And I'll shoot blindfolded if you want to.
Speaker 10 (33:45):
Okay, yeah, as long as it's best of three because
we've been postponing this now largely because of my logistics.
Speaker 2 (33:53):
But those are you're retired, I mean, there's more excuses.
Speaker 10 (33:58):
You're right, right, you're absolutely right.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Okay, all right, you're welcome to my dojo anytime you
want to. Doc okay, correct, all right, great to catch
up with you again. Thanks for joining you.
Speaker 10 (34:09):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
That's the Hall of Famer, Doc Emmery. All right, when
we come back Fritzy. Uh, let's see you're doing doing
your Kevin Harlan, Harlan Off, Nick Seltons. Okay, all right,
I like this. I saw the script and it looks
like it could be entertaining. And more of your phone
calls as well. People are caught up in the Hall
of Very Good here. They have a lot of submissions here,
(34:32):
so we'll take that. We'll ask Gilbert Arenas his Hall
of Very Good team coming up top of the hour.
Take a break back after this.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio w APP.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Paully just sent me a list of hockey names because
when we had to do the highlights at night, sometimes
if you're not watching that game and then you get
what is known as a shot sheet, the individual play
of a game, and then all of a sudden, I'd
always go, okay, any tricky names, and then usually they'd
highlight it and then they would spell it out phonetically,
(35:12):
like Jean Sebastian Jeguer. But you know, I'm doing the highlights,
so not doing play by play where it's a little
bit harder with those names and trying to, you know, enunciate.
But I remember there were times that you were thinking,
this can't be right, you know, when you're Ilkas Sinsalo
and you're like, okay, sure, I hope I get close.
Speaker 11 (35:35):
We did.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
We had a sports center anchor and he just he
knew everybody knew he was going to mispronounce the names,
but he did it in a way where he didn't
offend the hockey fan. It just sounded like he was
getting through it really quickly, and he would just rush
through it and everything. It was just like he threw
(35:58):
everything in the blender on high and just went right
through it. But we would laugh where you just go,
oh my god, he butchered it. And he would say,
I'm not gonna say his name, but if he came
on the show, he would admit that he sort of
blew through the stop sign when he came to trying
to get some of these names.
Speaker 9 (36:18):
He did.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
He didn't do too well with that. All righty Fritzi,
You ready to go with your Kevin Harlan in person? Okay,
Kevin Harlan on the call last night Celtics and the Knicks.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Cat goes cross caught over the hardheart dish is out.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
To bruns and whoa, there's an extra terresture among us.
Speaker 10 (36:35):
He wears number.
Speaker 15 (36:36):
Eleven and takes the form of Jalen Brunson. It's another
three and the Knicks have come all the way back
from a twenty point deficit. It's their first lead since
early second quarter when the score was thirty three thirty one,
and Reggie a palatable nervous hush has come over t
d Garden. Joe Mizla's gut is sensing this one just
might be getting away from his Celtics. He signals time
(36:57):
out to the rep and wants to talk about it.
To buckle up in Boston. It's a Bronson three party.
We'll step away, but for a moment, this is the
NBA on TNT.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Head looks like it's going to explode. Yes, Polly, I didn't.
Speaker 6 (37:10):
Think he was going to make it through that. Yeah,
he looks like he's gonna collapse.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
I think I would have maybe spaced out the Kevin
Harlan going crazy, high energy and had a little bit
more of a play by play voice. Maybe that's a long,
long paragraph there to try to maintain that.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
Yeah, I was feeling a little pressure in his skull there.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Yeah, yeah, I think you're you're Kevin Harlan is really
good when you simplify it with like maybe two or
three sentences.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
Maybe spur of the moment too. I've been known to override.
Speaker 11 (37:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
But but but you know when you say and it's
nine to eight, like he gets excited, it's nine to
eight and the Hawks are gonna call a timeout and
we will too, you know, like that it's a twelve
eight run for Denver.
Speaker 4 (37:59):
That's not really a big deal. It twelve eight and
that's not a thing.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Yeah, but that's the joke. That's the funny part of
the funny part. Yeah. See once again, as Frank Caliendo
told you, you're not funny when you're trying to be funny.
You're funny when you're not trying to be funny. I
thought your mind, your head was going to explode when
Frank is explaining what makes you funny and then you're going, okay,
(38:22):
so don't try to be funny.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
Then he proceeded to do an impersonation I mean, which
is pretty spot on, which made me very uncomfortable, as
everybody was like, let's.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Just like you he said, he said that you look
like you're eating your face when you talk.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
There's nothing remotely complimentary in a back back description.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
Agree, this is this crazy thing with his mouth.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
I know, I know.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
Raj in Chicago, Hi, Raj.
Speaker 8 (38:47):
One, mister Pattick, thanks for taking my call. All the
very good.
Speaker 11 (38:51):
I just thought of another name too, So my first
name was Ben Baker and also playlock man.
Speaker 8 (38:57):
What y'all think of that?
Speaker 7 (38:58):
Man?
Speaker 2 (38:59):
I don't know if I'd put been in there, but
Mooky had a run, mok was he was great grat
in college. And the fact that Pearl Jam didn't they
name their band Mookie Blaylock to begin with, Yeah, PAULI A.
Speaker 6 (39:12):
Lot of people are asking, what's the Mount rushmore of
the Hall of Very Good, the HOVG, And I was
looking at the career scoring list. If you score twenty
thousand points in the NBA, generally you're going to the
Hall of Fame. But there's like five dudes who aren't
or didn't. Antoine Jamison, Joe Johnson, Tom Chambers, Cliff Robinson,
(39:34):
and Jamal Crawford. They're all at the twenty thousand mark.
They're right by each other as well. And I don't
think any of them are going to the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Tom Chambers should be in the Hall of Fame, Okay,
he should be. Twenty thousand points. Yeah, and one of
the greatest dunks in NBA history. Remember when he put
his foot on Mark Jackson's chest to climb to me,
he went out and dunked on one of the great
dunks of all time. That's a pretty good list there.
Speaker 6 (40:02):
Jamal Crawford has twenty thousand points and no All Star appearances,
which is hard to do it is, but he won
six Man of the Year six straight years, I think, but.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Not good enough to start twenty thousand. Yes, Marvin, you're
gonna argue.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
I'll just say he's an entertainer's Hall of Famer.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
Okay, all right, okay, most entertaining.
Speaker 5 (40:25):
Non Hall of Famer. Yeah him, white Chocolate.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
I was watching some Jason Williams videos over the weekend.
Jay will can still play.
Speaker 5 (40:35):
Oh he kills the forty over Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
No, he's forty. He's killing these twenty five year olds.
They all want to check him, and I'm like, the
dude's got an incredible handle. He's breaking hips instead of ankles.
He leads the league in hip replacements. Yes, mar was
that on Facebook? Yes it was. Yeah, jay Will beautiful Shot,
(40:58):
Beautiful Shot teammates with Randy Moss in high school. Yes.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
I just want to say that your deep dive into
Facebook free retirement is very concerning. Really, it's alarming even really,
and it's I don't want to overstep, but I'm concerned.
Speaker 5 (41:15):
Really.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Wow, coming up for you know, it's gonna you see
those columns under the pyramid. That's crazy, dude, I didn't
know that. Definitely aliens built them. Gilbert Arenas joins us
next
