Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
I hope you had a great weekend. Everybody an extended weekend.
Gangs all here ready to go. We normally do it
on Monday, best and worst of the weekend. Since it's
a Tuesday and we weren't here yesterday, Your phone calls
are welcome. Each seven to seven three DP show Tyler
sitting by to take your phone calls, play the Apole question,
stat of the day, all of that forthcoming.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
If you're watching on Peacock, that would be our streaming partner,
or if you're listening on our great radio affiliates including
iHeartRadio and Fox Sports Radio, Dpadanpatrick dot com at DP
show on Twitter. Running down some of the headlines here.
The thunder go up on the Timberwolves. SGA gets forty
and his MVP tonight. The Knicks are getting two and

(00:47):
a half. Well from the bookies from Vegas. They don't
start out up two and a half nothing, No, they don't.
That would be great though if they did. You know,
are we ever going to get to that point with
gaming that you start out with? That's the point spread
and you know, make it easier on us, so we
can understand when there's, you know, a bad beat.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
You never hear good beats? Do you?

Speaker 2 (01:09):
You always hear a bad beat. Scott van Pelt always
talks about a bad beat. Although if you're a gambler,
and I'm an ex gambler, you do love telling people
about the bets that you won, you normally don't talk
about the bets you lost. Like I can't imagine Drake
or Floyd Mayweather saying, hey, let me tell you about
the time I lost a half a million.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
On the Raptors or something.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
But Nix are getting two and a half of the
Pacers Game four and Tyree's Halliburton's dad gets.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
To come back. How about that? But he doesn't. He
can't go on the floor. He has to be up
in a suite.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
I don't know if they make him sit like in
row eight of the suite, Like he can't even sit
in the front row of the suite, but his dad
will be in the building. The Knicks at the Pacers
Game four, Thunder dominated. At least it looked like they
dominated until you look at what happen and you get
forty from SGA. You got balanced attack from the Thunder

(02:05):
and you hold on to win this one by two.
NBA teams that take a three to one series lead
back home for Game five win seventy five percent of
the time. It felt like every time I covered the
bulls with Michael Jordan? Did I ever tell you that
I covered the bulls with Michael Jordan?

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Did I? Pallie? Do you remember that.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
I'd heard about it sometimes show talked about it?

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, yes, I covered the bulls.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
It felt like every time that they could close out
a series on the road, they never did for some reason,
even though Jordan never went to a Game seven, But
seventy five percent of the time, the team that takes
a three to one series lead back home for Game five,
they win seventy five percent of the time. So Shay
Gilgis scores forty and the first Thunder player to score

(02:53):
at least forty in a playoff game since Russell Westbrook
Junior the third did that against Utah back in twenty eight.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Team stat of.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
The Day is always brought to you by Panini America,
the official trading cards of the program, and for over
forty years they've been helping you get the best tires,
helping customers find the right tires for how and what
and where you drive ship fast and free back by

(03:24):
right Seaton poll question if you would do us the
owners for the first hour.

Speaker 5 (03:29):
Sure we can start in the NBA. Which is more
true the thunder shut Anthony Edwards down or Anthony Edwards
needs to step up?

Speaker 2 (03:38):
You know, it's rare when we will compliment or credit
the defense. We tend to look at the star player
and say, what's up?

Speaker 3 (03:45):
What happened? Now?

Speaker 2 (03:47):
His shots per game have been going down each series.
That to me is a little worrisome. If he plays
at his normal level, then they pull out that win.
But keep in mind his teammates had a great performance,
so they were making shots and I'm going to give
credit to the defense with OKC lou Dort. All he's

(04:10):
doing is trying to stay with uh Ant Man. That's it,
and I think that's the key is he's not worried
about anything other than Anthony Edwards. And Anthony Edwards even
said after the game that he didn't particularly have a
bad game. But here is the Timberwolf's star.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Well, I don't look at.

Speaker 6 (04:30):
It like I struggled or he struggled.

Speaker 7 (04:31):
It just.

Speaker 6 (04:33):
They had a good game plan making us get off
the ball. Well, especially for me, man, it was superan gaps.

Speaker 8 (04:39):
I made the right play all night.

Speaker 6 (04:40):
So I don't really look at it like a struggled.
I didn't get enough shots to say our strogled. So
that's my thing might be how you guys look at it,
But yeah, I'm a stroggle.

Speaker 8 (04:47):
Oh he's just going to make the right play.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah, he had six assists, but I do need him
to score more, be more aggressive. And he said he
was trying to take it to the hoop. But they
played great defense. Help defense, the gaps, they're really tight
with that. Chad Holmgren has done a great job. But
give credit. Ok See is the best defensive team in
the NBA. They're proving that. Now that's not, you know,
a hot take when you go, how about we credit

(05:11):
the defense. It's what's wrong with Anthony Edwards. I'm giving
a whole lot of credit to ok See. I've often
said many, many, many many times, so I very often
said this, don't let the best player beat you. Oka
See did that last night. Now, the other players played
pretty well, and that's the danger in that. But that's
because Minnesota has a balanced attack there. They have depth there,

(05:35):
and they almost pulled out a big win there. But
give credit to the defense for a change.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
Yeah, Pauline, Yeah, I saw a stat on Anthony Edwards.
He drove to the lane like sixteen times, which means
he is being aggressive. But on all sixteen of those
times they rotated over a double team sixteen for sixteen.
They're trying to get out of his hands.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
And that's the way to go. Don't let the best
player beat you, and you know that'll be the philosophy.
It should be the philosophy. Now, I don't know why
Minnesota doesn't do that to Shay Gildus Alexander. How about
we don't let their best player beat us and score
forty points. And you've got the rim protector, Rudy Gobert,
you should be able to shut him down there.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Rudolph had thirteen and nine for you.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
It's okay, it's all right. See, if you want the
most overrated player in the NBA, it's not my guy,
Tyrese Haliburton, it's Rudy and the go bears. All right,
what other poll question were looking at today? First hour?
Seat And by the way, let me do the starting lineup?
Ed guard out of NYU tied Fritz.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Do I do height? And wait?

Speaker 8 (06:43):
Oh boy, now we don't do that.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Oh we don't do anything at guard six foot six?
So I just do your height, don't I don't. They
don't do weight. So your height is what.

Speaker 8 (06:57):
Like five ten and a half? Five ten?

Speaker 3 (07:00):
All right? Ened guard five foot ten out of NYU
Todd Fritten minister forward in the guard.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Because had him more like he's a tweener small forward.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Seaton O'Connor is here, Marvin is here, Pauli's here, Marvin
has his All Star T shirt on.

Speaker 9 (07:21):
I do I live in the crates much like yeah,
much like Pauline and uh, Fritzy, what year is that?
This is nineteen ninety two?

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Of course, of.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Course it is. I've been looking for that. Now I
know where it is. You have my nineteen ninety two
Orlando All Star T shirt on?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Yes, paul, but it is a genius business model because
that's not an original All Star T shirt like Marvin
wasn't at that weekend, no offense, but you can buy
that old stuff. Now there's websites that have reprinted memorabilia
from years in past.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Yeah, it's called Todd Fritz's Favorite gate place to go
buy Maya's wardrobe. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Well it's like distressed. You know, we're we buy distressed furniture,
distressed jeans. That's kind of the sports version of distressed. Yes, yes, Marvin.

Speaker 9 (08:11):
And it's very nostalgic. So you want to try to
go back to your youth or something like that. That's
why retro sneakers are such a big thing. You know what, man,
I couldn't afford those Jordans when I was ten.

Speaker 8 (08:21):
You know, I'm forty. Well I can afford though, So a
lot of people do that.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Well, guys do that with cars.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
You know, if there was a car in high school
that you couldn't afford, then once you get money, then
we tend to revert back and go. You know, I
always wanted that trans Am or Corvette IRAQ.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Alrighty, So we'll settle on a poll question or two here.
Your phone calls are always welcome. Operator Todd Marvin is
going to be running things today, So I just want
you to take your cues from Marvin today.

Speaker 8 (08:53):
All right, Why would you guys do that.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
I don't want to be the bad guy. I had
a great weekend, you know, the sun is out. I
just want to make sure that Pritsy is having fun.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
I am.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
I went fishing yesterday. Yeah, I went fishing. Caught some
small mouth bass and catching release by the way. But yeah,
went out and I roughed it a little bit. I
was out there but kind of like a hab you know.
I'm looking for the big.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
Way, big waves out there.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Yeah, looking for the big one.

Speaker 8 (09:27):
What makes it a small mouth bass? How big is
the big mouth bass?

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Then it's larger than the smar?

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Yeah, it's mount clear like you would be a large mouth,
would be a big mouth pass, it would.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
Be that pain in the bas Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah, yes, Marmon.

Speaker 8 (09:43):
Whenever you're Maine, do you just feel more like a man?

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Oh you can't spell Maine without m an well said
down their license plate, isn't it.

Speaker 7 (09:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
I think it's something like that. Yeah, you know you're
Paul Bunyan here. It's just you're out there and the wilderness.
But you know when it's just you and the dog,
and then you hear sounds at night and you're like.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Scared.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
You know those glowing eyes and the thing what kind
of cats thing about it?

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah, well I have a dog when he's a rescue
but part coonhound, and she is a hunter. She'll hear
everything and sometimes she didn't hear anything, but it certainly
sounds like she did, yes, Paul.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
Now Maine has bears, and you know about bear like
the strategy if a bear walks up on yours near you,
you're supposed to stand motionless and just walk backwards slowly.
Is at the routine I believe. So how does a
person do that?

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Well, I encountered a bear. This is nineteen ninety nine.
I'm in British Columbia. Here's Dan's story time. So I'm
up there fly fishing and we stay for an extra
day because we're on a photo safari.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
This group.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
I wanted to do a photo so far and they
gave me a camera and they said, we're going to
look for the Kommodi bear. Komodi bear is one of
the rarest animals in the world. It looks, you know,
it's an albino bear, kind of looks like a polar bear.
But it's a spirit bear is what it's called. So
people Native Americans viewed it as a religious figure. Well,

(11:20):
we're there and I'm thinking, I'm not going to see
this bear. I mean, it's one of the rarest animals
in the world. Our guide on the boat had lived there.
He was over forty years of age. He had never
seen the bear, And all of a sudden we realize
that there's a sighting for the bear, and we go over.
We're moving closer this island, and all of a sudden,

(11:41):
you see a little speck and then I realized that
might be as close as I get, you know, to
the Kommodi bear. Our guide Native Americans starts crying because
that's a religious figure. We get there on shore, eventually
the bear's gone. I'm like, all right, at least I
got these real small, grainy pictures. And people may not

(12:01):
believe me, but we did get to see sort of
the commody bear. I'm standing there looking through all my
film that my pictures. The bear walks out, and the
bear is and the salmon are spawning. So the bear
walks out. He's ten feet away from me, and the
guys that I'm with moved about twenty feet away from me.
They didn't tell me, So I stood there and then

(12:23):
I did what Paulie said.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
I didn't run.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
I stood there, and then all of a sudden, I thought,
I'm just going to take pictures because this is content,
and if he eats me, I might be able to
get that last picture right before he eats me. Well,
I have a couple of these pictures that are framed
gorgeous bear. But all he cared about was salmon spawning.

(12:48):
So I kind of survived almost a bear attanic. I
guess you could say almost, yes, paulm.

Speaker 4 (12:54):
That's pretty solid though. The fact that you unintentionally stood
there motionless because you're taking picture.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Well, if if I, if I was reading the room
and had the wherewithal to look up, I probably would
have run. But I stood there because I was I
was frozen, just taking pictures. And the bear is eight
feet tall and he looks at me, and then all
of a sudden he goes, eh, that's not salmon, and
he went back in and started grabbing the salmon that

(13:21):
we're spawning. AnyWho, Okay, we have a poll question. We
got play of the day stat of the Day. Our
good buddy Jim Jackson from Fox covering the NBA playoffs.
He'll join us coming up a little bit, and uh,
we got some we got some issues with college football.
We will discuss those best and worst of the weekend.
What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. Operators

(13:44):

Speaker 2 (15:00):
I was wondering Indiana loses to the Knicks, and after
a loss, now they've allowed Tyrese Haliburton's dad to come
back into the building. If they had won the game
against the Knicks, I'd have to have the talk with
my dad. If I'm Tyrese Haliburton, just say, you can't
ruin you know, you can't go against a streak like

(15:21):
we're a superstitious dad.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
You're going to stay at home. Can't have you out there.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Don't want to ruin a streak, and you know you'd
have to have the talk.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Why don't you go up to your room. I'll be
up there. I want to talk to you about something.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
But they lost, so now I can have dad back
in the building for tonight's game.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Yes, Paul, do.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
You think that the Pacers management had to talk of
mister Halliburton directly or talk to Tyresee said here's what
we'd like out of Dad.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
I don't think the Pacers did.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
I would say maybe it's Tyrese who did that, or
you know, maybe they they sent out a memo and
then they could pass it on to Tyrese. Haliburton's dad.
They're just not letting him sit down downstairs, so he'll
be up in the suite in the building. And the
Pacers only favored by two and a half in this game,

(16:13):
and you look back, we might look back when that
last game and say, you blew a.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
Twenty point lead, And.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Once again, you can't say you're surprised at anything with
the number of teams who have come back from twenty
points down and they're doing it in the fourth quarter.
I mean, that's the amazing part. There have been six
comebacks of twenty or more points this postseason. There were
total six comebacks of twenty or more points in the
last five seasons combined. In the postseason I mean, it's incredible.

(16:45):
But it's because you have that opportunity that the three
will bring you in and the three will knock you out.
That's why you have this big seismic shift there. And
the way these guys shoot, they shoot it a lot.
By the way, you know what's more of an epidemic?
Three point shots? You guys want to guess, Marvin, I'll

(17:05):
start with you.

Speaker 8 (17:09):
Three point shots the only thing I could think of.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
Really, Okay, Paul, we're playing guests at epidemic. We've done
that in a while. Yes, yes, I would think carrying,
but this seems like a no thing to you.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
You know, Adam Sandler sent me a video last night
where a guy's carrying and then there it's a TikTok video,
and I said, I don't know why you're sending this
to me. You're the one that needs to watch this,
since you carry the ball every time you dribble it. Todd,
what is my epidemic?

Speaker 8 (17:36):
The step back?

Speaker 5 (17:38):
No, satan passing up an open shot?

Speaker 3 (17:44):
No, I mean those are all legit.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
Yes, Paul, I'm gonna go with lane violations not being called.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
No, we're past that free throw. The number of free
throws and everything that happens in the last five minutes
of a game, and it slows it down and it's
just death. I mean, you can talk about great athletes
and you know, there's so much better than the previous generator, granted,
but the number of free throws and the calls and

(18:11):
the challenges, like after a while, you're just you don't
miss anything if you get up and go get a
beer in the last three minutes, because you'll come back
and you're like, wait, they still challenging this call.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Yes, Marvin, can we.

Speaker 9 (18:26):
Play a drinking game? Take a drink every time somebody
gestures for the challenge when they do a little thing
wooo oh, I know every single time they hate the
foul call.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Uh yeah, it's it's bad. It just slows the game down.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
Now.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Granted, the aesthetics of the game when you shoot threes
and you miss threes not pretty, but at least there's
action with these free throws and challenges, and you're just
it's a snail's pace.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Yes, poem.

Speaker 4 (18:52):
I saw someone on social media, some media guy said,
what if, like the NFL, you know you if you
have a penalty's called, you can pass on it. You
don't have to make it. What if in the NBA
they allowed you to pass on the free throws like
you get fouled, could you instat as a rule? Would
that be better?

Speaker 7 (19:08):
Well?

Speaker 12 (19:08):
No.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
Nick Wright brought this up on his show and he said,
in the NFL, if you want to turn down a penalty,
then you can, like you can't punish the team. But
the NBA does that with these challenges. And I think
that as Nick was saying, you know, if you decide
that you don't want to, you know, take a challenge,

(19:29):
because what's happening is when when I need a three,
you're automatically going to found me guaranteed. Well what if
I say no, you know, I don't want to be punished.
You know, therefore I can't take my three. I can
only take two free throws. And I think what Nick
is saying, and I agree with, is why don't they
let the team that has been fouled decide if they

(19:50):
want to shoot the free throws or go no, we
still want the ball, and you know, but they got
to figure this out the challenge. I'd be fine with
that that, you know, we didn't punish a team where
they go, here's the strategy. We're gonna foul Mitchell Robinson
and then make sure that you guys don't take a
three all right? Eight seven seven three DP show email

(20:13):
address Dpadanpatrick dot com Twitter handle a DP show. I
mentioned college football, college sports right now in limbo, and
there's some real issues here the college football playoffs and
the haves and the have nots. It's gonna get uglier.
You know, my college football source told me this morning

(20:33):
that we are expanding in twenty twenty six, that the
that the College Football Playoff Committee will go to sixteen teams.
But here's keep an eye on this because the SEC
and the Big ten want four teams guaranteed four team
They want half of the playoffs, and then you're gonna
have two from the ACC, two from the Big twelve,

(20:54):
and then we work our way down to one. You know,
per other conferences in there is going to get in there,
like Notre Dame is never joining a conference. If there
was any thought, any hope, it's not happening because all
they have to do is win ten games. They're one
of the sixteen teams and they don't have to share
that money with anybody. But that's what's happening, and they

(21:15):
control their schedule, and now it looks like Lincoln Riley
doesn't want to play Notre Dame anymore. I think we're
going to go to Notre Dame USC. This might be
the last time they play out. Oh a good call. Yeah,
I think we just bring the show to South Bend.
Who's up for that? Who wants to go with a
couple of days? Okay, yeah, I think it's in October.

(21:35):
Does that sound right? Maybe mid October? So yes, yes, Marven, I.

Speaker 8 (21:40):
Just saw October eighteenth.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Okay, all right, that will be mid October. Yeah, maybe
we take the show, we roll on campus there, we
take in the sits and said week eight okay, yes, Paul.

Speaker 4 (21:51):
I saw that on Thursday, so you mentioned a couple
hours ahead of it. The twelve team College Football Playoff
will move to a straight seating model this fall, which
again is reward the heavyweights and keep a team like
Boise State from getting a bye week.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Well, they can't have automatic qualifiers. That's the problem I
had Arizona State. Boise State never should have been they
call me cues. It should be the best teams and
if you want Vegas to handicap that or whatever you
do with the system. But you can't say, well, you
won your your conference, you get an automatic bid. Well,

(22:27):
winning the SEC and winning the Mountain West is a
whole lot different. And I think that's what you know.
Greg Sanke, who is the basically the commissioner college football,
is saying, we get four Big ten gets four. Now
if you cap it at that, okay, Like I'm okay
with that. I mean, let's be fair to the Big

(22:48):
ten in the SEC. But you know, you know the
SEC they you know, maybe there's a ninth conference game. Well,
they don't want to do a ninth conference game if
it means that could knock you out of the player.
If you have a ninth and you're guaranteed four teams
and you're one of the four, then you're going in.
But you know, I saw where Nebraska canceled theirs with Tennessee.

(23:11):
I think they had a game with Tennessee. I want
more of those games. I don't want w Offerd in there.
I want to make sure that. And this is why
I wish that you could have somebody who does scheduling
like the NFL does. And let's say you did scheduling.
Now you can't do it for you know, one hundred teams.
But it'd be great to have that where you have

(23:32):
a schedule release party where you find out who's playing who,
where they're playing, and maybe.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
We'll get there. Well, we will get there, hopefully in
my lifetime.

Speaker 4 (23:41):
Yes, Paul Dan, you said you couldn't have someone do that,
you really probably could with college football because if you
left the nine game, let's say everybody plays twelve regular
season games, nine of them are kind of automated with
the conference. That person who's doing the scheduling is really
scheduling September their release maybe and maybe an extra game
in November.

Speaker 8 (23:59):
That bye.

Speaker 4 (23:59):
We But if you said that the outa conference schedule
will be run by a central office, everybody wins.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Yeah, but I wonder about NIL or the transfer portal
that Let's say I think that this school is going
to be really good next year and they end up
losing five players or they lose their quarterback. You know,
then it's harder I think to say, boy, that would
have been a great matchup last year. But I hope
we get a schedule maker. That would be great. If
you think about it, you know, college football would be

(24:31):
these matchups would not be based on, hey we need
a sacrificial lamb. Hey we're playing our big rival the
following week. You know, if you're playing twelve games, let's
play great. Let's play great schedules here. And I know
that who's going to be hurt most as the smaller
schools because their athletic budget might depend on losing to

(24:54):
Alabama by fifty. I understand that. But college football's got
to decide, like, what are you? What do you want
to be because we keep trying to stay behind this
student athlete mask and it's not there anymore. This is
big business, treated his big business, and then decide what
you're going to do with the other programs. I still

(25:14):
think relegation would be awesome. I think having a major
one person or a group that schedules games for everybody
that would be fun as well. I don't know if
we're going to get there anytime soon, but I do think,
as my source said, we're moving ahead to sixteen teams
in twenty twenty six and no automatic qualifiers. At least

(25:37):
that's what they're hoping for.

Speaker 4 (25:38):
Yes, Paul, if you go back to like what Notre
Dame does, Notre Dame has an interring schedule because they
have some traditional opponents from the past, like USC or
BC or Navy that they try to play every year,
or Stanford, but Notre Dame football. Next year opens at
the Miami Hurricanes. Then they have Texas A and m
at home per do at home, which is traditional. Then
they're at Arkansas, where you're like, well, Arkansas, it's an

(26:00):
SEC school and they're not playing you know, fair Estate.

Speaker 7 (26:05):
MM.

Speaker 4 (26:05):
But that's a pretty tough schedule. It's creative, Todd.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
What did you send me here about bears with salmon?

Speaker 8 (26:13):
Oh, it's not considered spawning.

Speaker 13 (26:15):
In case there's any of someone that's in that kind
of world that might want to correct you when you
were talking about spawning, I decided to look it up
to see if it's called that. But it's not exactly
called spawning. They're just kind of catching and eating fish
the bears, So it was something less than spawning that
was going on.

Speaker 3 (26:31):
I guess that's no, no, no, the salmon are spawning,
not the bears.

Speaker 8 (26:35):
The salmon are spawning. I fail refering to the bears
are spawning.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
Oh the hard left turn there wowne deep in college football.

Speaker 3 (26:42):
Wow. Wow, the salmon swimming upstream where they lay their eggs,
fertilize their eggs, and then they die.

Speaker 8 (26:51):
I appreciate the clarification.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
But yeah, yeah, bears. Bear's a bit thanks for joining us.
Bears do not spawn salmon spawn. They should those bears
and Tod would be right if they did. AnyWho, you
couldn't make this up.

Speaker 3 (27:12):
That sports emmy looks farther and farther away away. Christ
and Syracuse joins us. Good morning, Chris. What's on your
mind today? Hey?

Speaker 12 (27:21):
Thanks as always, Dan, take out the best and worst
to throw at you, and a question for you off
of your college football talk, I'll go worse. First at
the ACC spring football meetings, hearing that Bill Belichick and
his little sidekick there the Belichick showing up late. How
I mean, you're one of your first meetings and you're late.
And I can't imagine all the years at New England
that he was ever late for a meeting. And if

(27:43):
any of his players were ever late, unless they had
a name like Brady or Harrison, they'd probably be cut
from the team. It just doesn't seem like he has
his heart completely into football anymore. And everything you hear
about this girl and what's going on. It just seems
like Bill Belichick has gone from the hoodie to the
hoodwink and my best the NBA Conference Finals and Dan,

(28:03):
I think it's one of the first years I can't remember.
There's no older star, there's no Durant, there's no Lebron,
and there's no current or recent star like Jannis Tatum,
Luca Joker. All four teams have a current, up and
coming budding star. And yeah, I love it and I
think it's great for the NBA. And Dan off your

(28:25):
guys with you guys were talking about a second ago.
Do you think now with the new format, with the
conference championship games, do you think some teams might not
even want that extra game or might even sit players.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
Well, I think that's where you have to find out
if you're an SEC or Big Ten team, is this
going to help or hurt us? If you win the game,
obviously it helps. If you lose, is it going to
prevent you from getting into the playoffs? And you know,
Lincoln Riley and USC have talked about how tough it
is in the Big Ten, which is a shame that
you know you're going to decide to end this rival

(29:00):
with Notre Dame one of the few rivalries we still
have left, and they want to bow out with this.
Jimmy in Chicago. Hi, Jimmy, went's on your mind today?

Speaker 14 (29:11):
Up?

Speaker 7 (29:11):
Dan?

Speaker 14 (29:12):
I was just curious what that Jerry West card on
the left corner of your desk is and where you
got that from, and also the last of your show.
I think it'd be awesome if you allowed the loyal
fans to come to the man Cave. I would definitely
love to fly out. I would definitely fly out to
love them, to be you guys, and to tour all
that awesome stuff in your man cave.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
All right, well we'll take that under advisement there, Jimmy,
thank you consideration. The Jerry West card, it's a pamphlet
that was sent to me by a listener knowing obviously
a big Jerry West fan, and they're just tips on
how to be a better basketball player. And I got
a lot of I don't know, unique pieces of memorabilia,

(29:53):
and I appreciate if somebody really values it something they've
had and people have sent in things and I can
display him, then great. But yeah, that's a Jerry West
pamphlet on how to be a better basketball player. I
skipped the part where it said, you know, talking about defense,
though I like Jerry, that's not for me.

Speaker 9 (30:13):
Yes, Marvin, have you ever given it any serious thought
about having people in a man cave? Just kind of
like our most loyal listeners, like Jimmy just said in
the Fieldhouse.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
No, I haven't. But but but it's not to say
that I wouldn't it, would.

Speaker 7 (30:31):
You know?

Speaker 3 (30:31):
For another day, we could look at this, consider this.

Speaker 4 (30:35):
Yes, we have talked about our friend Darren Ravel from
collect He's an expert on sports memorabilia. He has said
before he would love to walk our studio and give
you the street value of the studio in memorabili.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
Yeah, I don't know if I even care about the
street value.

Speaker 4 (30:49):
Yeah, I guess more so for the curiosity factor.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
Maybe when it's all said and done, I can decide
if I want to fix a price tag to this.
But I mean, this is just stuff I've collected for
forty years, and I don't throw anything away obviously, and
just thought, you know what, we've got an opportunity to
display it. I probably rather not know how much some

(31:15):
of this is worth.

Speaker 4 (31:15):
Yes, going back to college football and scheduling, you're saying
scheduling cupcakes early, it doesn't do much for you. Notre
Dame opens at the Miami Hurricanes and home against A
and M. Those are heavyweight franchises. USC football opens this
year home with Missouri State, home with Georgia Southern, and
then Purdue in the Big Ten schedule. Those two games,

(31:35):
there's no upside to winning them. I know it keeps
your slate clean and you're two and zero, but you
almost get dinged for those these days. Yeah, you get
no credit.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Boy. This is a big year for USC football with
Lincoln Riley. Big year.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
I don't know what that buyout is, but I'm sure
somebody knows what that buyout is.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
They just brush up on this paperwork here into the season. Hey, Sally,
would you bring me the Lincoln Riley payout paperwork?

Speaker 7 (32:04):
Please?

Speaker 2 (32:07):
Oh never mind, I've got it right on my desk.
Let me see Gabe in North Carolina. Hi, Gabe, what's
sign your mind? Hey?

Speaker 7 (32:16):
Good morning guys. Gabriel six foot tall, two forty and
not harderself but a Jim Beheim. But Hey, I wanted
to call you, and I don't want to rehash bad
things with the Emmys, But you don't need them, man,
you guys are above them. I think you guys need
to create a Jimmy and are a Jimmy Jimmerson. It's

(32:40):
a bronze statue holding a pickleball paddle or something like that.
He'd give it away the last year before the show
closes out to all the contributors, good people of the show.
Also real quick. When he comes to Dylan and Marv,
Dylan lopped off the piece of his thumb. Does that
make Marv's hands the smaller ones?

Speaker 2 (33:03):
I'm not, no, no, we even measured him against Marvin.
After Dylan sliced off part of his thumb. I think
he would have to slice off part of all of
his fingers and then he might have smaller hands.

Speaker 8 (33:16):
Pretty embarrassing, I know.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
And Marvin didn't want to ask, but like it was
so obvious. Dylan wan, you know his hands bandage. He
didn't want to put his hand up there. I forget
who said who's got bigger hands now? And then Dylan
put his hand up with his part of his thumb
sliced off, and Marvin lost that one.

Speaker 8 (33:35):
He's got to lose his whole thumb.

Speaker 2 (33:41):
Well, the way he slices and dices onions. You know
there's always a chance. All right, let me take a break.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
We got more phone calls coming up, and our play
of the day is next.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 12 (34:03):
Oh my God.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
Of the day, My God, this is the play of
the day.

Speaker 8 (34:13):
Check this out.

Speaker 4 (34:14):
First pitch they swung out in hammer deep to right fail.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
It is done.

Speaker 7 (34:19):
A home run for.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
A tony Well. Before you even had a chance to
buckle your seatbelt, Otani makes it won nothing with his
major league.

Speaker 3 (34:27):
Leading nineteenth home run the very first pitch of the game.

Speaker 2 (34:32):
That's courtesy of AM five seventy LA Sports Donchers Radio Network.
That's your play of the day. Nineteen home runs for show.
Hey Tani, But how defeating is that for a pitcher?
You spend all this time hours preparing.

Speaker 3 (34:46):
Day of stretching, throwing, going to the bullpen, talking over
you know, strategy there, what are you gonna pitch?

Speaker 2 (34:53):
How are you gonna pitch this guy? And then okay,
what are you gonna do with Otani? You know I'm
gonna throw one right down the middle and see he'll
be surprised. First pitch of the game, and you could
tell off the bat the sound, oh man. And that's
what pictures know too. Pictures know this sound. They don't
need to turn around. Sometimes. That's your play of the day.

(35:14):
Brought to you by Maco. Most cars on the road
could use a little TLC Mako. They bring your car
back to life. Affordable pea chimes, light collision repairs. Get
a free estimate today. Uh oh, better get Maco. By
the way, here's something going on at USC now. I
don't know how big this is. I don't know how
prevalent this is, but there's a USC booster threatening to

(35:36):
take USC out of his will if Notre Dame USC
rivalry doesn't continue. Other boosters reportedly are reaching out to
the board of trustees about the future of the rivalry.

Speaker 3 (35:48):
Now.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
I don't know if this booster is a heavy hitter,
and maybe he's a billionaire, a multi millionaire, but threatening
to take USC out of his will if they're not
going to continue this rivalry with Notre Dad. Let's see
Lance in Nashville. Hi, Lance, what's on your mind?

Speaker 15 (36:09):
What's going on? Dan Dennett? I'm gonna piggyback off what
Jimmy said earlier. You guys got job. You guys passed
the beer test more than anybody on radio. I listened
to sports talk radio all day. You guys are the best.
But in regards to your epidemic that you addressed earlier,
I called it a few times, but I had a
thought and I just kind of want to take your
comments maybe off air, but maybe there's like a two

(36:31):
minute or a three minute warning at the end of
games where if a team is fouled, they have an option.
You can a take the free throws and take the points,
whether it's two or three, or you take a reduced
amount of free throw, say it's one, and retain possession
with a reduced shot clock. So it enables teams to

(36:51):
maybe catch up at the end of the game and
keep things more exciting. I'll take your comments off line.
Appreciate you guys.

Speaker 7 (36:57):
Have a go one.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
Thank you Lance. This can Fisher is willing, I think
to look at a lot of things. He's been very
open minded. If you know you've been with the show,
and you know when he comes on the show and
I've offered up two things, and whether he had already
thought of that, which he probably had or what I
was telling him, and then he adopted those things.

Speaker 3 (37:18):
So, h anything that speeds up the you know, the the.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
Amount of time that we spend reviewing without any action,
that's when I want to get rid of that. I
want to make sure that we continue some kind of flow.
I mean, this is really the problem that we see
with all sports. What did baseball do? There was no flow.
Pitcher would take time, batter would take time. This is forever. Now,

(37:44):
all of a sudden, we're speeding it up, and nobody
has talked about the flow of a baseball game in
a while. With football, you get to the final two
minutes and it takes forever. You want the flow of
the game. Everything's reviewed, okay, I'm okay with reviewing it.
If you have the technology, great, then use the technology.
But speed up the technology.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
That's all.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Keep the game moving and you can tell me how
great these athletes are and they can get forty points
and they're doing incredible things that you know, the previous
generation didn't do. I can acknowledge that the game itself
has no flow to it, and that's the choppiness that
I want to get rid of.

Speaker 3 (38:27):
We get.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
If we do that, I think that that would make
the game far more palatable when you're watching it instead
of oh my god, slowing it down another review and
then and then we're going to foul somebody, and then
he goes to the free throw line. And that's the
problem that I have. The game is beautiful. Keep it

(38:48):
that way, yeah, Pauling.

Speaker 4 (38:50):
And like you said, they're never going to get rid
of free throws or reduce free throws. I'm sorry. Timeouts
in the NBA because that's commercial inventory. Every team has
a truckloads timeouts and they carry over to the second half.
It's like college football. They appear to speed up the game.
You know that the clock continues to run in the
last two minutes, and as soon as they speed it up,
the spat up the game. They added a two minute

(39:11):
warning to get another commercial inventory there.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
Yeah, yes, I mean, you know, TV networks want to
have something that's a static for them, But then they're
part of the problem as well. And it was never
more evident than a few years ago when I went
to see Michigan and Ohio State. And if you go
to a game, it is forever in between plays, forever

(39:34):
because when you're at home, you'll be like, oh, okay,
commercial break, you'll go do something. When you're at the game,
you're going, damn, this has been like five minutes.

Speaker 3 (39:44):
Yeah, Marvin.

Speaker 8 (39:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (39:45):
When you're at the game and you're watching, the guys
are guys a TV timeout. The players are sitting on
the field, they're just standing there. They're standing there and
the rest there's this big guy with big orange gloves
and he tells the refs when the commercials are over,
and he waves and and he starts gesturing our it's
time to go, and then they start playing.

Speaker 8 (40:04):
The players are sitting there for two and a half
to three minutes.

Speaker 2 (40:08):
Yeah, it's just a tough watch. So I will put
up with three point shots. I will put up with
fifty three pointers. Just keep the game moving, that's all
I want. And it seems to slow down in every position.
So important in this strategy that if we foul you,
you can't take a three and I can't prevent I

(40:32):
can't rule against a team that didn't do anything wrong.
You're the one that's creating this scenario with the intentional foul,
and I think you should have the opportunity to be
able to say no we're not taking that. Or you know,
if we do something you know that's a little trickier
where you get one free throw and the ball, you know,
that would cut down on this as well. But as

(40:54):
long as you have bad free throw shooters, you're probably
going to have this intentional fouling. How about, okay, here's
the problem. How about we just work on guys free
throw shooting at work. Lots of tedious I know I'm
willing to do it when I retire, I'm willing to

(41:15):
do it. I'll go team the team and say, all right,
who needs help? And I'm willing to do that just
to make the game a little better for the next generation.

Speaker 5 (41:24):
Professional basketball is a great living, but I don't know
that I got time for that.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
All right.

Speaker 2 (41:30):
One Hour in the Books on this Tuesday, Best and
Worst of the weekend, more phone calls. College football. It's
in limbo right now and they're getting to ready to
vote on some really big issues. We'll talk a little
bit more about that coming up. Also, Jim Jackson covering
the NBA playoffs. Peo will join us as well. One
Hour in the Books two more to go on this
