Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Radio Hour two on this Monday. Great to be back
from vacation and we are fully assembled. We got the
Minister of Humor, Fritzy Seaton, Marv, Paulie, yours truly in
the b rg's the back room, guys. A lot of fun. Uh.
Spent a lot of time fishing, by the way, and
uh and catching. You know, you go out and you're fishing.
(00:25):
I got a few largemount bass, caught a pike and
sent the pictures to the dan Ets. Pretty proud of it.
Now it's catching release, you know. So I'm not gonna
like mount those on a wall or anything in the
man cave. But did think about it, you know, I
just kind of put on a put on a display,
is what I did.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, Pauline, are any of them mount worthy? Are they?
Is there a certain size that's mount worthy?
Speaker 2 (00:49):
I'm not a mount guy. I you know, when you
go into somebody's house and they got like there's a
deer there and a bear, and you know you're there's
a rug and you know it's a leopard ruck. I'm
not into that. But I don't know what is a
mount worthy fish? That you catch and I don't know
if there's a certain size where you go, Well, I
(01:10):
can put that on the wall there. Yes, yes, eaton.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
What if you caught the fish with your bare hands
instead of a hook, then would you want to mount it,
because that's a hell of an accomplishment.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I did catch them with my bare hand. Oh yeah, yeah.
I just went into the lake and wrestled them. Yeah,
that's right, I got them. Yeah, there were a few
that got away.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Yes, Tom, So you don't have a local taxidermist on
retainer just in these situations if you had to quickly
get something mounted.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
No, No, I'm not into that. I just catching the release.
But uh out there on the lake and uh, spend
some time with my brothers, got everybody together and had
a good time. Yes, Paulie.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
What about keeping the fish for cooking or a fire eating?
People always say that's good eating that type of fish.
Is there a certain one that you may keep and
not released?
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Nope. I release them all when I go to Montana
and go uh, you know trout fishing and catch and
release and same thing up here, catch and release and
but it's fun. It's fun going out there. Now here's
the problem. I do have a pontoon boat, and I'm
taking my brothers to dinner. We ran out of gas
(02:19):
in the middle of the lake, and I have to
call my friend, my friend who runs the marina. I say, Zach,
I ran out of gas. Goes, all be there, so
he I mean, this is the ultimate embarrassment where you
run out of gas. Because I'm looking at the gas
gauge and I go, all right, I think I got
(02:40):
enough to get you know, it's a couple of miles
to get to the restaurant. Ran out of it was
one of those where you go and then my brothers
started laughing, and so my friend Zach had to come
out and rescue me and towed me in and we
got some gas and then we we forgot all about
(03:01):
it until the next day when I actually was piloting
the pontoon boat and I hit a rock, and all
of a sudden I was stranded again. So I have
to call my friend Zach, and I said, hey, Zach,
goes what happened this time? I said, well, I hit
a rock. All right, I'll be there. I came out,
(03:25):
got me all set up. I need a new propeller
on my pontoon boat. So then I text him yesterday
and I said, hey, I've broken down emotionally. Can you
come and pick me up? And he said, I'll be there. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
I have a lot of questions right now. Okay, what
was the conversation like between you and your brothers leading
up to that excursion on the boat? Were you talking
about like, you know, I got a boat now, so
I know these waters kind of thing. Were you a
very confident captain of this pontoon boat or were you
more unsure of like, yeah, yeah, we'll see how it goes.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
No, I was pretty confident. I had my captain's hat
on too.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
No no, no, no, no, all that stops oping. We're going
to need a photo of that.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
I dubbed my youngest brother my my first mate, and
uh oh yeah. I was pretty confident there. And then
when we're out and I'm I'm you know, it's it's
a large lake. There's a lot of rocks, you know,
in certain areas, and I was like, I don't know,
there's no boobies here. I should be able to pilot
this right through this. All of a sudden, I held
(04:36):
my breath because I thought, if I make it through here,
we're good and I hear this. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
See, there's a fella who works for the show named
Anthony who goes up to Maine with you typically like
when you do the show like you are now. Yeah,
does he normally take care of these issues and wasn't
with you and that's why this was the thing. Does
he do these types of things happen often and he
covers up for you? What or are these just anomalies
(05:06):
They just so happened to have, Like you had one
weird week.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
This just happened. He wasn't here, and I was up
with my brothers and you know, once again, I'm dominating fishing.
I'm crushing my brothers, which is the most important thing.
And then I thought, I'll treat them to dinner. How
about we get on my pontoon boat. You guys sit
back and I'm gonna pilot this and take you over
(05:31):
to the restaurant. And then we ran out of gas.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yes, Paulie, So I know very little about boats. You
know more than I do about boats because you have one.
You can't carry a spare gas can on a boat,
or can.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
You Well, if you have a gas can, you probably
should have put the gas in the gas can and
then filled it up. Prior to leaving, I thought that
I could get across the lake, which is about eight
miles long, and I thought, all right, and I looked
at the gas gauge and I made a terrible mistake.
(06:05):
But everybody survived. And once again, my thanks to my
buddy Zach who helped me, not once but twice. Yes, yes, Todd,
can you.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Order delivery from a stranded boat in the middle of
the lake where they'll come in their boat and come
bring you the food.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
I don't know if Uber Eats does that, but I
will check on that. I told my brothers to place
their order at the restaurant while we were sitting in
the middle of a lake. And but once again, you
know what happens. It happens to the best of them us.
I mean, we survived. But more importantly, man that I dominate.
(06:43):
When I was fishing, Are we going to show any
of these pictures if they're watching on peacock, I sent
you guys, you know the fish that I caught. Okay, yeah,
somehow we're not going to show that. Yeah, but you
guys are on my team.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
This is jealousy.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
What Yeah, it feels like, Oh we can make fun
of Dan, but we're not gonna catch proudish like that
in my sleep. So alright, best and worst of the weekend.
Once you saw that you liked you didn't like, We
talk some college football coming up. Ross Dellinger from Yahoo
Sports on maybe expanding to twenty eight teams playoff teams,
(07:26):
also the Michigan situation as well. Eight seven to seven
three DP show. Good morning if you're watching on Peacock,
download the app if you haven't done so. Our great
partners there and we say good morning to our radio affiliates.
All right, let's clean up the poll question from our
one season and what are we going to go with
an hour or two?
Speaker 4 (07:45):
Well, we got up there right now putting Scottie Scheffler
in the air quotes Tiger Woods discussion is appropriate or
too soon?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Right now, sixty percent of the audience are saying too soon.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Okay, that's fine, that's fine. It's just he hasn't taken
over the sport in the you know, Tiger had his
way of dominating, whereas Scotty's is just very very subtle.
And you know, Tiger, it just feels like he's not
only going to win, but he's going to embarrass you
(08:23):
along the way. Scotty is just you know here, it
is just what I do. There's a chip, there's a putt.
That's a good drive. Thank you drive home safely? Yeah, poem.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
It's their style of stardom that's most different. They came
in completely different. Tiger was a household name at nineteen
years old, with expectations about his launch on the world
Nike signatures, all that stuff. Scheffler eased in, he had
a great amateur career. I read all about it, but
it's he didn't walk in as a superstar in Watston.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
Would those pole results be a bit different if he
had a more engaging personality or it's got nothing to
do with that. It's strictly just what he's a cop
so far compared to the Tiger's domos.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Oh, I don't know. For me, I think it's the presentation.
Sometimes we'll look at a basketball player and say, man,
that guy is awesome. But he's awesome because he creates highlights.
He doesn't mean that he's a great basketball player, you know,
playing both ends, playing an entire game, but he does.
You know, you can be fooled sometimes when you're watching
(09:26):
Sports Center, where you go, man, that guy he's really good.
Oh you didn't see his other three at bats, or
you didn't see him play in the field. Scheffler doesn't
do anything that you don't feel like you you can't
do Tiger, it felt like you can't do those things.
And now we can't do what Scotty does. But he
doesn't do something where you go, man, he just hit
(09:46):
it three forty or you know, aside from that chip yesterday, like,
how many signature moments has he really had? Doesn't feel
like there's that many where you go, oh, my gosh,
I remember that had a lot of I remember that
and Scotty yesterday. That's that's one of those. But he's
only had a handful that you remember, all right, Seaton.
(10:09):
Let's poll question for hour two.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Let's see we have one here from Paul that is,
who is more dominant in their sport show, Hay or
Scotti or other. We'll throw another there as well. I
have another one too from a vacation that I could
throw out there. This doesn't necessarily apply to you, Dan,
although it could in many other times. This was sent
(10:33):
in via email. Do you recline in airplane seats? Yes
or no. It's a very controversial topic. Do you recline
in airplane seats? When you're sitting in your seat in
an airport in an airplane, do you hit the button
and recline back? Okay, I do halfway, so that would
(10:58):
be a yes.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
I think that counts as a yes, yes, yes, ish, yeah.
I don't go all the way back because I know
how it feels if somebody does that where I'm trying
to get, you know, my tall frame in there.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
It's just a little to take the edge off a little,
just so just a knock back.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Now, if you're in first class, then you know you
can do whatever you want you as far as you know,
moving the seat back. But if you're in coach coach,
then just a little bit.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
Yes to him, Why don't they make the airplane seat
so I can only go halfway back? The U pull
it so it doesn't go so far where anyone behind
you would be uncomfortable by it, or the person in
front of you is doing it. Now it's forcing you
to go that much.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Do you do it? I don't do you do it? Okay,
not never, I rarely do it.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
I just I end up. I'll sit straight up, and
I'll watch what other people are watching across the aisle
and not to use the headset or watch my own programming.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
All right, what about your seaton?
Speaker 4 (11:53):
I have for sure, I don't always, but sometimes I'm like,
forget it. I'm just knocking this thing back.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Don't care always, Okay, Paul, I look back if there's
no one behind me, full recline, if they're selling behind me,
not at all ever?
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Yeah, okay, I mean if you weren't surprising to me,
they wouldn't make them to do it right.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
That is true they but it does feel like there's
times when they'll have their seat back and all of
a sudden, you drink is in your lap, or you know,
it's a little bit tighter than it needs to be.
But I'm gonna blame the airlines, not necessarily the person
in front of me when they do that. Let me
get to Gus in La Hi, Gus, best and worst
(12:39):
of the weekend.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
Good more mispatch there. Hope you and the boys had
a great week. All right, let's get into this. You know,
you gotta love a sport like baseball where one week
you get swept by a team that is statistically eliminated
from the playoffs already, only to come around.
Speaker 7 (12:57):
And sweep a team that is beating you.
Speaker 6 (12:59):
In the vision. I mean, truly a one eighty of events.
I did not expect to sweep. I was just praying
just for us to win the series and how to
sweep it alone. But hey, wins win, and you know
this could be turning the season around for us. You know,
we got people coming back off injury list, so hopefully
that's good. Kind of like, this is like the worst
(13:21):
of the weekend. I was gonna bring this up last week,
but you know, you boys were Ugh Kim Little, the
Jaguars kicker that nailed the seventy yard field goal. This
is not being recognized as an NFL record because it
was preseason. Now I get that preseason, you know, everybody
(13:42):
plays like a series or two whatever. But to me,
I feel that this is a significant achievement because he
nailed a seventy yard field goal with room to spare,
and he beat the record by four yards. Now, they
don't make the.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
Field small, you know, shorter the field.
Speaker 6 (13:58):
Goal like you know, bigger, nothing like day. Why isn't
it being recognized.
Speaker 7 (14:04):
If his cleats and jersey are going to the Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
You boys have a great week.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Welcome back, Thank you, Thank you. Gus. I wouldn't have
his cleats and jersey go to the Hall of Fame.
They might not have tried this seventy yard field goal
if it was the regular season. But you've had guys
who have kicked you know, field goals, you know, mid sixties,
upper sixties. It's just a question of if your coach
(14:30):
is going to allow you to do it, because the
potential for getting a field goal blocked from seventy yards
sixty five yards is greatly enhanced just because you're going
to have to, you know, hit a line drive basically
to get it going. But no, it was very impressive
and room to spare. I think, you know, let's see
(14:51):
if they have an end of the half type situation
this year where you bring him in, that'd be great.
Then you can send his jersey and his cleats to
the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But we can't start
looking at what you did in a preseason game and
all of a sudden those count. It's great if you
hit a home run in batting practice and you hit
(15:12):
it out of the ballpark, they don't take your bat
and take it to Cooperstown. All right, we'll take a break.
We'll talk some college football coming up next. More of
your phone calls as well on this Monday Best and
Worst of the Weekend.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
After this, be sure to catch the live edition of
The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six
am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 8 (15:34):
He's Mike Krmen, I'm Dan Bayern. We have a brand
new fantasy football podcast called I Want Your Flex. Twice
a week every Tuesday and Friday, we come up with
new episodes to not only look back at what happened,
what you need to do at that minute, and also
look ahead of what's coming up in the fantasy football world.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
That's right, Dan.
Speaker 9 (15:54):
Every week we're going to scour the waiver wire to
find the pickups to turbo boost your fantasy lineup, sit starts,
fantasy football players rankings to get you ready to dominate
the competition.
Speaker 8 (16:05):
Listen to I Want Your Flex with Mike Carmon and
me Dan Beyer on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast and
wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
We will give you our best and Worst of the weekend.
Coming up in twenty minutes eight seven to seven three
DP Show spend a little bit of time in the
first hour of the program talking about the penalties levied
against Michigan. We'll talk to Ross Dellinger of Yahoo Sports
about that, also the possibility of a twenty four or
twenty eight team college football playoff that the Big Ten
(16:37):
is proposing. Let's bring in Ross, who joins us. Now,
how would you summarize the NCAA's punishment of Michigan football.
Speaker 10 (16:47):
Ooh, it's a good question, Dan.
Speaker 11 (16:50):
I would summarize it as uh, you know, I guess
it depends on who you asked, Dan. You know, if
you ask Michigan people, right, they say it was too
hard and the penalties financially or too stiff, and that's
probably a point of why they're appealing. Right, if you
ask everybody else in college football and college sports, they'll
(17:12):
say it was way, way too light, right, that the
NCAA should have given Michigan a postseason ban, and they
should have vacated wins in championships, and they should have
added more suspension and penalties.
Speaker 10 (17:26):
To the current head football coach, Sharon more, I.
Speaker 11 (17:29):
Think what the NCAA did, and they're starting to move away
from the vacated wins, right, they're starting to move away
from postseason bands because it penalizes sort of innocent players
that are currently on the team in future.
Speaker 10 (17:43):
Players that will be on the team, So they're kind
of moving away from that.
Speaker 11 (17:47):
So they're just substituting these financial penalties, you know, for
the postseason ban. And if you look at the full penalties,
the cumulative penalties, financial penalties, it's going to be overty
million dollars and probably as much as thirty five thirty
seven million dollars. I mean, that is a historic penalty
that we've just never seen anything like it. And I
(18:10):
know it's easy to sort of roll your eyes that
they have a lot of money and they can pay it.
We're in an age of athlete compensation where they're going
to be everybody's going to be paying, you know, twenty
million dollars to their athletes starting this year.
Speaker 10 (18:24):
So I don't think it's anything necessarily to roll the
eyes at.
Speaker 11 (18:28):
I think it was a pretty significant penalty, but it's
probably not what most people.
Speaker 10 (18:35):
Believed that they deserved.
Speaker 11 (18:36):
And I think and I'll say one more thing about that, Dan,
is that if the NCAA, which was tipped off in
October twenty twenty three in the middle of that season.
That twenty twenty three season was tipped off to this
this sigence. Deealing took a few days to start to
really vet it, realize it was real, and then alerted
the Big Ten, who then suspended Jim harb all those
(18:57):
three games. If Dan, if that does doesn't happen and
they don't suspend and the Big Ten doesn't decide to
suspend Jim Harbaugh, the NCAA doesn't alert the Big Ten
of this, Michigan probably does get vacated wins and maybe
even gets a postseason ban.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Wait to explain why.
Speaker 11 (19:17):
I think the fact that you sort of dealt with
it immediately during that season. I think there's a thought
that the three games that the head coach was suspended,
and you remember he was suspended I think two or
three games earlier that season two for a separate investigation.
(19:39):
The fact that they immediately took action, you know, and
I think Charlie Baker said this after they won the championship,
is that you can't argue that they want it sort
of fair and squares something like that. And and part
of the reason he said that is because of that
three game suspension for Jim Harborough.
Speaker 10 (20:00):
We dealt with it then, right, We dealt with it there, and.
Speaker 11 (20:04):
I think they took that, the Committee on Infractions took
that under consideration.
Speaker 10 (20:08):
And if that wouldn't have happened, I just have.
Speaker 11 (20:10):
A belief that that championship would have been in jeopardy
of being vacated.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
If I asked Jim Harbaugh, did you cheat or not him?
If I ask him did Michigan cheat? What do you
think his answer would be? If I just said yes
or no, did Michigan cheat?
Speaker 11 (20:32):
I can't imagine Jim Harbaugh acknowledging in any way that
the University of Michigan cheated, or that he cheated, or
that anybody on a staff cheated. You know, Michigan as
well as Jim Harbaugh, i'm sure, continues to contend that
they really received not much of a of an advantage
(20:54):
from a sign stealing in the advanced scouting, and that
it shouldn't have been illegal, and that it should it
would be legal to go scout your opponents. And many
times Michigan administrators and coaches have come to me and said, look,
you know, years ago this rule was almost changed to
permit schools to do it, but it's sort of a
(21:15):
cost containment issue, and so they continue.
Speaker 10 (21:19):
To contend that they they didn't get any advantage.
Speaker 11 (21:22):
And again, everybody else writing college sports will tell you
they did get an advantage, and I think the Committee
on Infractions thought they did get an advantage. And if
we were in any other era Dan before this sort
of revshare type of era, Michigan would have received a
postseason ban almost certainly, and they would have had scholarship productions.
(21:43):
But this is sort of a new world, and so
they decided not to do that and go instead with
the financial penalties.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Okay, Jim Harball has a ten year show cause, which
means he can't come back and coach in college. Correct.
If it's now, that seems like a really harsh punishment
for him if he goes back, But he's not going back.
My question though, would be if he was still there,
what would his punishment be If this is his punishment
(22:14):
and he's not there. Ross.
Speaker 11 (22:18):
Yeah. Norman Bay, who was the chief, he was like
the chairman I think of the Committee on Infractions. He
gave a press conference last week after the ruling and
he was asked exactly that. Basically, he was asked what
would have happened if Jim Harball was still the head coach?
Speaker 10 (22:35):
What would the penalties have been?
Speaker 11 (22:38):
And there was like, literally, Dan, there was like an
eight second pause and he just stared at the camera
and you could see the wheels turning, like, oh boy,
what do I say here? Finally he really sort of
danced around the question of you know, it's a hypothetical,
we're not going to get into that, but fairly clearly
the penalties would have been a lot more severe if
(22:59):
Jim Harball was Michigan's coach. There's no doubt about it
that it would have been a lot more severe. I mean,
I say that they have sort of stopped doing the
postseason ban, but if Michigan, if Jim Harball was still
coach at Michigan, you know, if it wasn't going to
be if there wasn't going to be a postseason ban,
there was going to be some kind of like season
(23:19):
worth of suspensions for him.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Talking to Ross Dellinger, Yahoo Sports senior college football reporter,
I saw the story floated by the Big Ten or
the Big Ten has an idea for playoff expansion twenty
four or twenty eight teams, and we're looking at the
Big ten and the SEC that they would get half
the field, and then you have the ACC and Big
(23:46):
twelve they get five bids, and then you would have
two automatic bids for the non Power four conferences and
two at large teams. So that escalated quickly that or
at least we're talking about this now, we're I know
we're headed towards this. Why how long is it going
(24:08):
to take to get there?
Speaker 10 (24:11):
I think it's still gonna take long.
Speaker 11 (24:13):
And I think this idea is just was just an idea,
and it is just an idea, right, it was somebody
kind of described it to me. I thought it was
pretty accurate, back of the napkin stuff, like this really
is like this is very very preliminary. So this was
a we're a week a week ago. So last Monday,
I think our last Tuesday, the Big ten had a
(24:37):
meeting with US its athletic administrators and kind of just
sort of presented this, Hey, what do you think and
everybody sort of gave it the thumbs up, right, and
then they sent it to the SEC last middle last week,
early last week, and there was a preliminate the first
call between Big ten Commissioner Tony Pettiti and SEC Commissioner
(24:59):
Greg Sankie Friday about it, and it was just sort
of a going through it.
Speaker 10 (25:03):
What do we think of this? You know?
Speaker 11 (25:05):
I think the Big Tennis sort of like trying to
get a feel for where the SEC is and there's
really been no answer there from the SEC. But this
week there could be some kind of answer. The SEC
Athletic Directors meet for a regularly scheduled meeting this week
and so I'm guessing it will come up. But Dan,
this is so preliminary, like it's it's on. I heard
(25:26):
about it Thursday. I decided that I wouldn't write about
it because it was so preliminary. ESPN did write about
it on Saturday, which forced all of us to write
about it. But I went to somebody who was very
involved in the process about like, hey, I'm writing something there,
Like there's nothing to write. This is a non story.
It's just starting. We haven't even gotten to the first
(25:46):
step of it. And they are right. I mean, this
is very preliminary, so I think we're still a ways away.
But Dan, I think we always knew when we went college.
When college football went from two to four, and certainly
when it went from four to twelve, we knew that
so inevitably it was going to go to at least sixteen,
And so I think that's still where the focus is.
(26:06):
It's trying to get this thing to sixteen. But there's
a deadline December one where they have to make a
decision on next year's playoff. Obviously, this year's is twelve
and that's all set, but we're trying to decide on
next year and then there and in the next five years. Right,
the new kind of six year extension that starts next year,
so they have to December one. I have a feeling
(26:27):
next year's playoff will be where it is this year.
It certainly will not be twenty four or twenty eight teams. Right,
this is not happening within a year.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Great to talk to you, Thanks for joining us, No problem,
Thank you. Ross Dellinger, Yeah, who's sports senior college football writer. Yeah.
It's one of those things where this story comes out
and then your bosses say, why aren't we covering this? Well,
I'm told that it's not a story. Well, yespn's reporting it, okay,
but still it's not a story. All right, We still
(27:00):
have to cover it, and then all of a sudden,
you're adding credence, credibility to the ESPN report of twenty
four to twenty eight. I just think we need to
slow down. But everybody realizes how much money is there,
and all of these leagues have expansion. Nobody's reducing, they're adding.
(27:21):
Baseball's talking about adding teams. Baseball's talking about realignment, and
they're trying to cut down on the travel, the wear
and tear. You might see the Mets and the Yankees
and the Red Sox and the Phillies all in the
same division that they would have realignment, true territorial and
(27:42):
it would be it's not American League, National League, you know.
And once again this is in the preliminary stages by
Commissioner Rob Manfred. But you might see that and maybe
expansion that maybe two to four cities would get expansion teams. Point.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
It's funny. I hadn't heard this yet, and when you
brought it up, I was like, I kind of like it.
I like teams as physically close as possible for fans
to go to other cities and see games. That would
be a big benefit for the in game experience, I think.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
But once again, if you had the Mets and the
Yankees in this same division, then you had the Phillies
in there as well. You know, once again territorial here
Red Sox would be in this as well. Yeah, se
I am.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
A massive fan of geographical rivalries. To me, it's like,
what makes sports so great is that you're always trying
to be like it goes right back to high school.
You're trying to beat the next town over, and then
you're trying to beat the town. All of the towns
that are adjacent to you, those are the ones you
want to beat the most. I'm I'm a huge fan
of that.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
How about we do our best and worst of the weekend.
Let me get to Michael in Florida. Hey Mike, thanks
for holding. What do you have for me today?
Speaker 7 (28:58):
Hey, Dared worked up for a long time. Six two
three Okay, I am upset, And what I wanted to
discuss is the sense of entitlement that the Big ten
commissioner and the SEC commissioner come with these automatic bits.
What happened with just playing on the field and doing
(29:20):
the you know, top twelve like you're going to have
we only have them top twenty five teams so to
even say you're going to go to twenty eight, how
does that make sense?
Speaker 2 (29:33):
I always, as I've told you many times, follow the money.
It may not make sense, but like March madness doesn't
have to expand, it's going to expand because it's more money.
And that's the same thing with college football. For years
they had one versus two and that was it, and
I just kept pleading with them and I'd say, just
(29:56):
make it four, like more teams, more interest. Well, you
open the door and you're opening more than just a door,
You're opening all the windows, you're opening up the roof,
and all of a sudden, here we go and uh,
it's never enough. But thanks for the phone call, Michael.
It's going to happen. It's going to be a professional model.
(30:18):
At some point, it will happen. Yeah, and then you're
going to have the habs and the have nots, and
it'll be unfortunate. But you know this is you know
we're headed this way. We just are. Let's go around
the room, Todd Best.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
And Worst of the weekend, Best of the Weekend, in
front of his parents and grandfather Orioles. Rookie pitcher Brendan
Young came within four outs of a perfect game in
Houston on Friday night. They're from the area. The last
Oriols picture to come that close to perfection Mike Musina
back in nineteen ninety eight. Worst of the Weekend Charges
Wide receiver Quentin Johnston suffering a scary injury early in
Sally's preseason game against the Rams. Hit hard and the
(30:54):
secondary and a deep ball fell to the turf kind
of violently, but eventually he was able to get up
on his own and into the locker room. They're monitoring
his condition.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Yeah, he got popped, you know, that's one of those.
He didn't have a chance for the ball. Defensive back,
you know, takes a shot at him, and you know,
when you have both teams who gather around a player,
that's when you know things are serious. Seaton Best and Worst.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
My best of the weekend. Premier League is back and
for one brief moment, for just a small window of time,
newly promoted Sunderland was at the top of the table.
They were in first place over Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool,
all of the big guys. I know, it's an hour
or whatever it was, but it's still fun to see.
And that's a hell of a journey if you've been
(31:37):
following everything from their documentary to sort of their rides
back to the top flight has been really great. My
worst of the weekend is Josh Dobbs getting everybody hurt.
Patriots backup quarterback do Every ball that comes out of
this guy's hand is just slightly behind or a little
too high, and you just see these dudes like, oh God,
please just be okay. Brutal.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
Marv invested worst.
Speaker 12 (32:01):
I'm go'a sart with my worst DP because we've been
talking about a little bit. The Padre is getting swept
and now they lost their lead in the n West
after losing three straight to the Dodgers. My best of
the weekend I binge watched this show on Netflix called
Any Given Saturday, and it follows different SEC teams around
from last season. Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Ole, Miss Mississippi State.
(32:24):
Fascinating anything with the SEC. To me, it's the most
fascinating conference anything having to do with college football, especially
the SEC.
Speaker 13 (32:33):
I'm in.
Speaker 12 (32:35):
It's a it just means more.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
I would love to see, you know, the wives of
the SEC. Oh yeah, I mean, if we're gonna have
real housewives of Orange County or Salt Lake City, Yes,
mar Yeah.
Speaker 12 (32:49):
They taught to Shane Beemer's wife, the head coach of
South Carolina, and she's like, I feel it whenever they lose.
I feel like it's my fault. It is serious down
the Pauli Besten Worst Best of the weekend. Little League
World Series. Watched a lot great coverage Francisco, Lindora. The
mets was there. You're sitting in the stands with the kids.
It was really great experience to see him there.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
And another best of the weekend. The LA Rams used
one quarterback the other day, Stetson Bennett the fourth twenty
eight to forty three twenty four and three touchdowns. I
wonder what the record is for most passing yards in
a preseason game. The best I could find is like
Tony Romo had three forty or something. But usually no
one throws for three hundred because they mix up the quarterbacks.
(33:33):
Stetson Bennett three twenty four in three touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
And they might need him given Matthew Stafford's situation that
Stetson Bennett Junior the fourth and did he also throw
the pick to that big lineman and then he kind
of made the tackle down the sideline. Yes, that guy
was rumbling stumbling. That's where you're a quarterback and you
have to make a business decision there. And given that
(33:59):
Matthew Stafford got a tender back, I don't think I'm
going over there to make that tackle. He kind of
got in his way and then got brushed aside, and
then the defensive lineman kind of stumbled. But that was funny.
That was great, all right, Well, take a break. More
phone calls coming up back after this.

Speaker 2 (34:28):
Diana Resini of The Athletic said that the Cincinnati Bengals
are looking for both draft pick compensation and a defensive
player in return for trading Trey Hendrickson. He said, to
make sixteen million in the final year of his contract.
They did say, you want to seek a trade, go
out and they couldn't find a match. And he is
(34:51):
still on the outside looking in for the Bengals. Terry
McLaurin of the Commanders, he's on the outside looking in
as well. The Commanders and the Bengals play tonight or
phone calls by the way. Preseason. This is where, depending
on what your team or your player does, you're either
it's preseason or hey, it might only be preseason. But
(35:13):
if you're a Chicago Bears fan and you beat the
Bills thirty seven and nothing, how are you reacting today?
And if you're a Bills fan, how are you reacting today?
Does this matter? If you're a Bills fan, do you go,
oh yeah, or do you go it's only preseason? Or
if you're a Bears fan, do you go, I know
it's only preseason. And you know Caleb Williams, Oh my gosh,
(35:35):
did you see Caleb Williams is supposed to be good?
This wasn't Shador Sanders out there, Jackson Dart, Dylan Gabriel.
The media reaction to Caleb Williams. First of all, it
was six of ten, first drive with Ben Johnson as
his new head coach. All right, so he completed sixty
(35:55):
percent of his passes and let him do you know
he had a touchdown. He's supposed to be great, Yes, Marvin.
Speaker 12 (36:05):
I think as far as the preseason goes, it all
depends on how good you were last year. If you're
good last year and you lose thirty seven or nothing, ah,
just the preseason. But if you were bad last year
or didn't meet expectations, you're trying to look for any
inkling of positivity going into the regular season.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
All right, you're gonna add more credence to it if
you're a Bears fan as opposed to if you're a
Buffalo Bills fan, because the Bills are a super Bowl
contender and the Bears should be a playoff team. Yes, Todd, what.
Speaker 5 (36:36):
If your team did better than expected last year and
won thirty to nine and twenty seven to seven in
their first two preseason games?
Speaker 2 (36:44):
How excited to Broncos?
Speaker 5 (36:45):
That would be the Broncos being the Niners thirty to
nine and they just beat the Cardinals twenty seven to seven.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Does that any how do you feel?
Speaker 3 (36:51):
You're pretty excited?
Speaker 5 (36:52):
Silly, but I feel it's your team.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
I don't give a damn it.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
Out to go there. A part is like fifty seven
to sixteen in the first two preseason.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Games, is that they're gonna go to the super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Who knows when Nancy West first.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
We'll go from there, all right, pie to the face,
Oh boy, Yeah, see right, I mean it feels better
to win than to lose.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
You cannot lose games in the NFL and still win,
So Trent Dilford, Yeah, it feels better to win than
to lose. So it's kind of like, yeah, your team
just lost thirty eight nothing, but I who gures it's
a preseason No, man, go out there and win, dude, Like,
what the hell?
Speaker 2 (37:31):
Yes, ball, but.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
Maybe last night's game Bill's Bears is two teams going
into the game with two separate mentalities. Josh Allen didn't
play a snap, so you're not concerned about winning that
game or else Josh Allen would have played, and otherwise
you're just looking at the lineup behind the starters. You
have a great starting lineup on both sides of the ball.
And for Chicago, you go in, let's try to set
(37:53):
the tone here that every game matters. Young team. A
lot of disappointments over the past thirty years. So those
two clash last night, so you get thirty eight zero.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Yeah, and you got Ben Johnson, who is you know,
he wants to have his foot on the accelerator that hey,
let's go out there and win these games. I would
want my team to go out and try to win
these games if you underachieved last year. You know the Bengals,
what did I say that first week when they lost
to the Patriots. I said, that'll come back and haunt them.
That could keep them from the playoffs, and it did.
(38:25):
I want you ready to go week one. I don't
want you using week one and week two of the
regular season to kind of ease into the season. I
want my team ready to go. Moe in Arizona, Mo,
thanks for holding best and worst of the weekend.
Speaker 13 (38:41):
Good morning, Dan Dennis.
Speaker 7 (38:43):
I've got two worst.
Speaker 13 (38:45):
One best as the way around. So if my daughter
had eighteen years old he brought a boyfriend home, that's
my worst.
Speaker 6 (38:54):
My best is well, Dodgers.
Speaker 13 (38:58):
Got the sweet and I'm also best is my nephew
and my my uncle were there to kind of just
tie the guy, give him like the third degree.
Speaker 6 (39:07):
Would look like an episode of Bad Boys.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
It was awesome, all right, Well, thank you, Mo. Yeah,
eighteen year old bringing home a boyfriend. I've been there
with three of my daughters and you're like, hey, have
him come up and say introduce himself in the kitchen.
I came in, you know, downstairs, into the basement. I'm
yelling to my daughter, Hey, tell Spaccoli to get up here.
(39:34):
You look like Sean Penn from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
She goes, who's Spaccoli? I said, have your date come up?
Came up, introduced himself. I said, I get out of here. Yeah, pulling.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Do you get nervous if the boy is overly polite?
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Well, if you're old enough to remember, leave it to
beaver with Eddie Haskell, like, I'm on to you already.
If you're trying to go, oh, hello mister and missus Patrick,
it's great to see you. I really like your house.
Oh your dog is so cute. Like, no, you can
save that, you know, just just say enough, introduce yourself
(40:12):
and if you want to throw anything else in there,
that's fine. But the the BS meter it is, you know,
in the red you know, I'm like, I'm on to
you right now, dude. All right, I've been there where
you are, so I got you. It's it's like Meet
the Parents. When de Niro's at the traffic light with
Ben Stiller, It's like, Hey, I'm on to you, dude. Yes, Todd,
(40:35):
that's still got to be better than YO.
Speaker 5 (40:36):
Cool crib like this place. You know, it could be
very much the other way where the kids got like nothing.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
Thank you to that sounds like the exact same thing. Actually,
cool crib, cool crib, nice house. Yeah, exact same up, dude.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Yeah, hey, dap me up a little bit about Yeah,
how about we just shake hands here, That's all I'm
going to be coming down there. Keep an eye on you.
Final hour in this Monday more phone calls, best and
worst of the weekend. The Minister of Humor tod is
(41:13):
here seatin Marv Paulie, yours truly, and the back room
guys who are back after this
