Stat of the Day has always.

buying should be, poll question Play the Day, stat of

(00:47):
the Day, all of that forthcoming. Well, there's only one
left now and it's Micah Parsons. Trey Hendrickson is in
got a little pay bump, but not an extended deal here,
and Terry McLaurin is in a three year deal with
the Commander. So Michael Parsons on the outside looking in.
I still think this is going to get done, but

(01:07):
it does get tricky. A source said to me yesterday.
You know, Jerry may make a statement here and say
you got a one year deal left, and then we're
going to we can franchise you the next two years
unless you want to give us a team friendly deal.
Whether that happens or not, they're on the clock and
the Philadelphia Eagles are waiting for the Dallas Cowboys. All right,

(01:29):
it's an NFL cutdown day. We'll talk about that coming up.
Kenny Pickett got sent to the Raiders yesterday afternoon, and
I immediately thought, Dylan Gabriel is probably the backup quarterback
in Cleveland by all accounts. He has played really well
and has outplayed Shador Sanders, and Shadoor Sanders will be

(01:50):
the third quarterback. Now, keep in mind they had five
quarterbacks a week ago. Now you got Joe Flacco. They
had Tyler Hunley in there as well. They brought him him.
They didn't have anybody healthy. That's why Shador got that
first start. It wasn't a healthy room. Now Kenny Pickett
goes after Aiden O'Connell got injured.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
He'll be the backup quarterback in Las Vegas. Yes, Paul,
I have.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
The Browns current depth chart. Joe Flacco first string, Kenny
Pickett gone, Dylan Gabriel second string, Shador third string.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah, I'm not surprised.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
The Raiders made it be known that they needed a
backup quarterback after they lost Aidan O'Connell, and you get
Kenny Pickett, who's bounced around a little bit. He was
on the Eagles roster when they won the Super Bowl
last year. You go into Cleveland and Joe Flacco has
earned it, and almost by default, nobody really challenged him
that it was going to be Joe Flacco unless somebody

(02:44):
really blew away the coaching staff. But even then, you're
not going to start a rookie. From what I was
told that Dylan Gabriel will probably get a chance, and
maybe Shador Sanders as well. But it's Joe Flacco right now,
all right? Eight seven to seven, three D Show Email
address DP at Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle at DP show.
It's hard to believe, but let's say I came in

(03:07):
today and I told you Josh Allen just retired.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
You'd go why like you.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Wouldn't believe that if somebody told you and Adam Schefter
Ian Rappaport said, hey, I'm hearing Josh Allen is retiring.
What it was six years ago this week when Andrew
Luck shocked everybody and said he's retiring. And when you
think of shocking retirements. Now, I had been in touch
with Barry Sanders and his agent, and the season ended

(03:38):
and he was going to London on a flight overnight
and he was retiring. Calvin Johnson walked away. I mean,
we've seen players who walk away and they still have
years left. But Andrew Luck was a three time Pro
Bowl quarterback, and I think Josh Allen is around a
three or four time Pro Bowl. Now, he did win

(03:59):
an m but I'm talking about the age. The age
of Josh Allen I think is what twenty eight and
Andrew Luck I think was twenty eight or twenty nine, nine,
twenty nine, okay, but imagine that that was his Saturday night.
The Colts were at home, Andrew Luck is on the sidelines,

(04:20):
and Schefty gets word he's at a wedding, and he
breaks the news. Andrew Luck is going to announce his retirement.
I think on Monday or on Sunday, but we didn't
believe it. And so Andrew Luck is on the sidelines
and you can tell with the crowd that everybody is
sort of going, wait a minute, I'm just wait. I'm

(04:41):
getting this from schefter here. So Andrew Luck doesn't know
that the story's out there, and then they had to
walk him out and he got booed.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
That was six years ago this week.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Now he's the general manager with the Stanford football team.
But imagine if Allen said I'm done now. Josh hasn't
battled the injuries that Andrew Luck did, and I said
for years, you have this unbelievable talent and you do
not have a good offensive line. It's like I got

(05:15):
this unbelievable engine, but I don't have tires that are
filled up. That's what you had with the Colts, and
it came back to haunt them because Andrew Luck got
banged up, and I think he just got to that
point where he realized there's more than just football. But
it still surprised us because that's where you go kicking
and screaming that I'm going to continue to play.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
They're gonna have to carry me out of here.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Well, that's not who Barry Sanders was, and that's not
who Andrew Luck was. Calvin Johnson I don't know, but
Calvin Johnson may have just said, hey, I don't like
what's going on with the franchise. We're not going anywhere,
and he decided to retire. I think at the age
of thirty. Barry Sanders around that same age. But you know,

(06:01):
once again, we think we know an athlete when we
see them. How could you walk away all that money,
a chance to be a starting quarterback, a chance to
be Super Bowl winning quarterback. But that's why we are
truly all different, because what our goals are, our motives are.
Andrew Luck had a bigger picture, maybe a bigger calling

(06:23):
than just being a professional quarterback. He struck me as
there's certain players that I've said this before, there are
guys who are really good at their sport, but they
may not love their sport. They are guys who are
in the gym all the time, in the weight room
all the time. There are other guys that they're just
really good at this. And I didn't know if Andrew

(06:45):
Luck loved football as much as he was just really
good at football. And then he may have gotten to
the point where he said I can walk away from this.
But six years ago this week, Andrew Luck in one
of the most surprise retirements in sports history.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Yeah, Paul and Luck was coming off a very good
season in twenty eighteen, sixteen starts ten and six as
a starter, forty seven hundred yards and thirty nine touchdowns.
Both of those were second in the NFL to Mahomes.
And they were coming off a season the Colts where
they had won a playoff game.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
They didn't stink.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Yeah, let me go back to the Trey Hendrickson situation
with the Browns that they doubled his salary and this
is a win win for both. It's not a good
look for the Bengals, but I understand why they're doing this.
You get Trey Hendrickson, who now is going to make
thirty million dollars, which he should compared to everybody else,
and considering what he's done the last two years, and

(07:41):
you're going to make him a free agent, total free
agent the following season, he can go wherever he wants,
and the Bengals don't get anything in return.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
This is where you go.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
I'm going to bawl out and I'm going to have
a great year and then I'll go play for the
Texans or Dolphins or whoever it might be. But the
Bengals they get him, and they get him. Really, this
is a contract year because he wants to prove that
he's a TJ. Watt, Miles Garrett kind of talent there.
But I think you look at the age now. Terry

(08:15):
McLaurin apparently wasn't old at thirty as a wide receiver,
but Trey Hendrickson felt older as a thirty year old
defensive end. But I think what happened with the Commanders
with Terry McLaurin is it's Jayden Daniels. This is his
coming in his second year. He had a great year,

(08:36):
went to the playoffs. You had everything worked for you.
Let's not mess this up. You brought in Deebo Samuel,
but that's a beat up, banged up Deebo Samuel. You
need Terry McLaurin. Terry McLaurin there every day for you,
every game for you. Not flashy. He's one of those
where you see after the game, I'll be damn he

(08:57):
had eight catches, ninety one yards and a touchdown. They
had to have him. Now, the Bengals Bengals had Trey
Hendrickson last year and didn't make the playoffs. This is well,
they got him, which is great. I don't know if
they solved everything. That offense is going to be great.
They'll be fun, be exciting. But you didn't make the

(09:17):
playoffs last year, and this feels like for that coaching staff,
you got to make the playoffs this year. They spent
a whole lot of money on their offense, but Terry
McLaurin got paid, and I think in large part because.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
They needed him.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Jayden Daniels needed him, all right, what's poll question today?

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Seton?

Speaker 5 (09:37):
Yeah, I almost feel like to that Josh Allen comparison
is a little Josh Allen I think is a little
too accomplished, Okay, But at the same time, then the
next person that I would go down to her that
came to mind was Joe Burrow. If Joe Burrow retired today,
I would be pretty shocked. But he's actually Andrew luck
is probably more accomplished than Joe Burrow is at this point,
so he occupies this funny spot there.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
And Joe's been banged up, He's had a lot of injuries.
Oh yes, sure, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (10:04):
They there's a couple of comparisons there that I think
are pretty apt.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
How about most touchdown passes in their first six seasons
in NFL history, Dan Marino one ninety six, Patrick Mahomes
one ninety two, third on the list all time most
touchdown passes first six seasons, Andrew Luck. Then it's Josh Allen, Peyton, Manning,

(10:29):
Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Brett Fav, Derek Carr, Dak Prescott.
That's a pretty impressive list. I look at Russ, Yeah,
Russe is up there.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Cook. Oh, he's cooking Hall of Favor. Come on, let's
get that fireback kid, come on. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
But those guys are sort of you know, Mahomes and
Luck and Josh Allen, Peyton, Manning, Russ, Matt Ryan, Derek Carr, Dak.
That's modern, you know, that's that's the new NFL. When
Marie was doing it, that was the old NFL where
you might throw thirty touchdown passes.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
He threw forty eight. One year.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Farv in there as well at one forty seven. All right,
So the pole question or pole questions that we're considering today.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
Well, we had a conversation before the show about the
value of edge rushers, and if they're I mean, they've
got to be average salary, they've got to be what
like top three or four.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Yeah, positions in the game.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
Yes, right, but they still seem to be somehow undervalued
in a way or maybe not as respected as they
could be.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Well, I think Aaron Donald is as valuable as any
defensive player in the last twenty five years. And I
could even look at his you know, his value to
offensive players, and you'd be hard pressed to find somebody
other than a quarterback. Now there are other positions. You
know McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley and you know Derek Henrier.

(11:59):
I understand that what Aaron Donald did was disrupt everything
and edge rusher if I know bosas over here or TJ.
Watt is over here, Okay, now I can adjust. Aaron
Donald would go up the middle, disrupt everything, and then
he would make the quarterback choose if he was rolling

(12:20):
right or left. The edge rusher might not do that.
Now he's there, we can have two guys on him
and you could still stay in the pocket. Aaron Donald
with what he did, and you know, I'll go back
to you know, when I talk about winning Super Bowls,
it comes down to defense in my opinion. You know
when Chris Jones, Jalen Carter, Aaron Donald. You know this

(12:45):
is just recently. These are guys that disrupt and their
defensive lineman defensive tackles, or they used to be called
nose tackles. Having that guy, to me, is just as,
if not more valuable, than having edge rusher.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
The edge rusher.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
It's great, we get to see you, you get to
do your sack dance, but if you give me because
Jalen Carter had like four sacks and thirty two tackles,
but that's not his impact. Aaron Donald was unbelievable. Aaron
Donald won the Super Bowl for the Rams because if
Joe Burrow has one more second, one more second, he's

(13:25):
got Jamar Chase. Because Jalen Ramsey fell down. It was
a sack off in the Super Bowl. Has that ever
been used? We said sack off the day after a sack.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Off mock headline.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
The headline something about a sack off for shack off
sack off. But Aaron Donald, those guys, Warren Sap, you
know your interior linemen mean Joe Green, those guys who
play defensive tackle or nose tackle. Those are the guys
who I love. And it feels like every year when
I'm watching college football, go man, that Danny Shelton, he's

(14:03):
a great nose tackle. And Dominican Sue. You know, I,
oh man, that dude killer. He should have been He
should have been He should have been great, Yes, he
should have should have been good career, not a great career.
He should have been something more known for the wrong things.
His career ended up being. He it all, it's somehow

(14:26):
it made a wrong turn.

Speaker 3 (14:28):
Yes, PAULI.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
There were times when Dominicansu was at Nebraska it looked
like one of those movies where there's a kid who's
way too big playing with high school kids.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
It was awesome.

Speaker 5 (14:36):
Yeah, like, why does this guy have to play college?
Just let him go to the NFL.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
And I remember talking to somebody who played at Nebraska
and they were like, we were scared of him. You know,
everybody's a football player, but he's got pads on. But
he said, we were scared of the Dominican sue. Okay,
stop me, you know, yeah, I don't know again, all.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Right, let me take a break. We'll come up with
a pole question. Here.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
We got a lot of things to get to today,
and I thought it would be interesting to have Ben
Denucci on former NFL quarterback. If you follow social media,
he posted a picture of him at the airport and
he was having a beer on Saturday, had just gotten
cut for the seventh time. Now, I did have that
one game during COVID Cowboys Eagles and he started for

(15:19):
the Cowboys, and I thought we could talk to him
about what this life is like where you're not quite
sure and you know, quarterback's a great position to play,
but he's been cut seven different times, and I don't
know when you get to that point.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
Where you say all right enough. But we'll talk to him.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Coming up a little bit later on, we'll settle on
our pull question as well.

Speaker 3 (15:45):

stories that well, other shows don't seem to have the

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Final NFL cuts by four pm Eastern today.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
What do the New York Giants just cut? Paulie, I
hate to deliver the bad news.

Speaker 4 (17:05):
Cutlets embrace yourself, Dan. The New York Giants will begin
the season with out, Tommy DeVito, He's been cut. Tommy
Cutlet's cut. He's too easy, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and
Jackson Dart. So if Tommy DeVito's career is over at
least in New York, three for five as a starter,
eight touchdowns, three picks, nice stats.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Day.

Speaker 8 (17:32):
To day, out to day.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
This is the stule of the day.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Roun to you by Benini America, the official trading cards
of the Dan Patrick Show. I could see him being
a local legend there, maybe a set up a restaurant
or a bar close to the meadowlands. Come on out,
tell me, Deviat those where are your jersey?

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Yes? Mormon?

Speaker 9 (17:57):
Do they rename a restop after him? When the new
No Turnpike? No, no, I said, Tommy DeVito.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
You know what I said, right, Yeah, But he's not
Vince Lombardi or bon Jovi.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
You yeah, but it's close. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
If I compare resumes with Vince Lombardi and Tommy Cutlets,
yeah close. But I'm going to say no right now,
I'm needing a little bit more on that resume. Speaking
of resumes, cal rawling it his fiftieth home run, he
joins Mickey Mannle only switch hitters in baseball hit history
to hit fifty or more home runs in a season.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
They weren't even pitching to him.

Speaker 2 (18:34):
Last night he hit one of those, like Manny Ramirez
used to hit some of the like a bad ball hitter.
He was unbelievable, down by his ankles and he hit
the go ahead home run and the third American League player,
first non Yankee to reach fifty before the end of August.

(18:55):
Aaron Judge did it twice, and Roger Maris did it.
This is big time star man. Mariners beat the Padres.
See that more importantly, you're winning big games and you're
putting heat on the Astros the Yankees for the playoffs
spot there. And if you look at the AL MVP odds,
now you got a race going on here because Aaron

(19:16):
Judge at minus one sixty, Cal Raley is plus one hundred,
and he's doing it now at the end of August.
And if you can have this creep over in September.
If he did this in May and June, then his
odds wouldn't be very good.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
But he's doing it now. These are big games.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
NLMVP odds Sho hey O Tani minus eight thousand Kyle
Schwerber is plus thirteen hundred, so that one is over.
But Aaron Judge and cal Raley, I wish he didn't
have the nickname the Big Dumper because it feels gimmicky
like he's he's not a I mean, he's a catcher

(19:56):
doing this.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Now.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Granted, once you heard the nickname, we had him on
and we talked about that, but playing the position of
catcher should I don't know how the voters will look
at this, but I just remember when you look at
great catchers, you got to still catch every single game
or a majority of the game, and the beating that

(20:19):
you take in being a catcher, and then you're going
to hit fifty home runs. That's why when I look
at Johnny Bench, who I think is the greatest catcher
of all time, he was an unbelievable catcher, great arm fielder,
revolutionize the position, but he's also hitting over forty home
runs a couple of times.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Cal Rawley has done.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
A great job, and he's done it in Seattle where
you're not going to get much fanfair, probably not putting
you on Sunday Night Baseball, and good for him and
to do it as a switch hitter and at that position,
that's what's remarkable. So I'm hoping, and I don't know
how much they would factor in. He's doing it as

(20:59):
a catch, sure that should be factored in.

Speaker 9 (21:03):
Yes, Marvin, if you're the Mariners, do you try to
move him off of catching just to save him? I
think you got to get into September. I don't know
what other position he plays. I'm guessing you know, Johnny
Bench could play third base, and he could catch, and
he could play first base.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
I don't know if cal Rawley or make him a DH. Yeah,
I'm not familiar enough with his backstory of other positions
he could play. But you can always park somebody at
first base. Yeah, Paulin.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
I saw a couple of stats the other day about
catchers and why they may have never hit fifty home
runs before. Catchers play the least amount of total games
per season compared to other position players, naturally because of
the wear and tear. So a guy like Johnny Bench
rarely played over one hundred and fifty five games, and
he was as tough as they get. He'd play one
hundred and fifty two, one hundred and forty eight, and

(21:56):
same with guys like Salvador Prez or Cal Rawley. They're
going to get a couple extra days off, which may
keep them from that fifty threshold.

Speaker 10 (22:03):
Yes, Todd, will Cal will always a nickname be stronger
or could you make the argument weaker if he continues
to prove beyond this year that he's not like some
one hit wonder that this wasn't wasn't an aberration, so
it's not as gimmicky. Maybe they get off of the
big dumper thing if he just continues to produce over
the next few years.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
What do you think I.

Speaker 10 (22:22):
Think it would be. I think it would maybe lose
a little bit if it's luster that it's easy to
give something a name for like that one season, and
then maybe they wouldn't be calling him that as much
if he continued to do that.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Thank you to uh. I think I hope that he has.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
I'm not going to see outgrown it, but outperformed that
that he's more than just that great nickname or you know,
an interesting nickname. But to hit fifty home runs and
you're right in the MVP race and your teams in
the playoff hunt, that's a big deal that should not
be forgotten. You know, when it comes to what you

(23:01):
want out of your MVP. That now is when you
want that. And Aaron Judges struggled. Aaron Judges struggled. I
got some numbers here. Judge came off the injured list
August fifth. He's hit two ten, that's his average. But

(23:21):
cal Rawley was plus one thousand to win the MVP
not too long ago. Now plus one hundred and got
a race going on here.

Speaker 3 (23:30):
That's great.

Speaker 11 (23:31):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (23:31):
Let me see Jr. In Indiana? Hi, Jr? What's on
your mind today?

Speaker 12 (23:38):
Hey?

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Dan?

Speaker 3 (23:38):
How are you good? Sir?

Speaker 12 (23:40):
Hey, pleasure to talk to you guys. First time, long
time with him for years. I never felt really overly
compelled to call. I'm driving around and you mentioned Andrew
Luck's name, and explitus was flying out of my mouth.
Let's telling your screener, Andrew Luck is not here in Indianapolis.
Is not looked at it very good light. We all

(24:01):
understand he was beat up a lot, but the way
he retired, you know, right at the cusp of the season,
one of his injuries that he had was we all
do accounts he was snowboarding, kind of lied about that
and then they even drugged you know, Peyton Manning out
to do a little dog and pony show to say

(24:22):
that Luck was looking good, looking great, and uh was not.
And then too, I think on the cake was basically
Jim Rsay gave him twenty or twenty five million there
at the end, and Luck basically took it. And the
reason that was because I think ers thought Luck would
think about it and come back after a year. So

(24:45):
now every year, especially in Indianapolis, two or three times
a year, we got to hear about this Andrew Luto.
We're tired of hearing about it. Number one. Number two
that with the Anthony Richardson debacle, all that set in
motion pretty much set the Nnapolis Colts back at least
a decade. So he's not seen in a real big
light here in Indianapolis.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
Oh well, that wasn't the point that I was bringing up, Jr.
But I certainly understand your frustration. The point was, could
you imagine if Joe Burrow or Josh Allen decided this
weekend they were going to retire, because that's what happened
with Andrew Luck. As far as Andrew Luck and how
he's viewed in Indianapolis, yeah, I've heard the same thing.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
I'm just talking about shocking retirements there, and yes, did
that set the Colts back? Yes, But you know what
set the Colts back. They had a crappy offensive line
for years years, and Andrew Luck took a beating and
that helped lead to that decision there. So what came first,

(25:51):
I'd start with a bad offensive line. Andrew Luck got
banged up. He was a Pro Bowl quarterback. You made
the playoffs, and he probably just got to that point
where he said, I don't want to go through this anymore.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
Yes, Mark, I'm.

Speaker 9 (26:05):
Sure sports media was way different back then. But where
do you rank Jim Brown's retirement as far as shocking retirements?

Speaker 2 (26:12):
Well, I wasn't old enough to process it other than
he I think he led the league in rushing with
like eighteen hundred yards or whatever, fifteen hundred yards and
then he just walked away your league, MVP, you rushed
for fifteen hundred yards and that might have been in
twelve games back then. Yeah, PAULI, Yeah, you're right.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
He was still at his peak his last year in
the league, fourteen games, fifteen hundred and forty four yards,
seventeen touchdowns overall, MVP.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
And he just got bored. He wanted to go make
movies because I don't remember Jim Brown ever being injured.
It felt like he injured people, and he decided that
he wanted to make movies. We talk about Wilt Chamberlain.
You know, Wilt Chamberlain never fouled out of a game

(27:05):
in his career. Jim Brown never missed a game in
his career. So nine years he played every single game,
and then all of a sudden, he goes, yeah, you know,
and I think he was twenty nine.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Maybe that's the.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
That's the number, twenty eight, twenty nine. It's like musicians
who are twenty seven. Uh oh, you want to live
to be twenty eight as a musician. But you know,
sports careers can end at twenty eight, twenty nine and
feels like, yeah, Jim Brown, I just remember. But they
had Leroy Kelly after Jim Brown and Lee Roy Kelly

(27:42):
that thinks a Hall of Famer, but he wasn't Jim Brown.
But the Browns did have another running back who came
in there, and Leroy Kelly was wonderful. But yeah, that
was that was a big deal. Now if that happened,
now that somebody said, hey, you know what, I'm Joe
Burrow walks in and goes, you know what, I'm gonna retire.

(28:03):
Saquon Barkley says, I'm going to retire. I'm going to
be in movies. That's what it would be like. Back
when Jim Brown did it, we were going, wait what, Yeah, Yeah,
I'm done. I've done everything i can do in the NFL,
and now I'm going to go make movies. Uh Dave
in Denver, Hi, Dave, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 12 (28:26):
I want a GP.

Speaker 13 (28:28):
Lifelong Mariner fan here. I've watched most of the Mariner
games this year and we've what we've noticed is that,
like since the All Star breaks, the Mariners have been
putting Kyle Rawly on the DH more often than not,
and so he's not playing first base, and so when
he needs a break, he goes to DH and they

(28:49):
let Mitch Garber catch.

Speaker 14 (28:51):
And so that's what we've been.

Speaker 15 (28:53):
Doing to hopefully save him.

Speaker 13 (28:55):
Hopefully, oh gosh, hopefully we can do make it pay off.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
All right? I love your excitement there, Dave.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
Yeah, so you put him at DH, rest him, maybe
certain games you have him catch. Uh?

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Gerald in Connecticut, Hi, Gerald, what's on your mind today? Hey?

Speaker 8 (29:15):
Good morning, fellas so it's fine. I have a question
about Jackson Dart. But yesterday I turned on the show
when I was on my way to work and I
randomly caught. All I heard was my mom is dead.
So I really knew I was in for a ride
of a show out of nowhere. And uh, But about
Jackson Dart, I'm just curious.

Speaker 12 (29:32):
So I don't know.

Speaker 8 (29:33):
I really think he's poised to be the starter sooner
rather than later. I just feel like Wilson's this inevitable end,
which I think everyone knew, but I feel like it's
gonna happen really, really soon. So I just curious about
your take about him, because he looks really good so far.

Speaker 2 (29:46):
Yeah, but once again, let's just be careful. You know,
the light is yellow, it's caution, it's blinking. There's nothing
wrong with him sitting. As I've said before, there's a
couple of coaching situations I find really interesting because I
think coaches jobs may hang in the balance here, and
that would be Brian Dable with the Giants. If ownership

(30:08):
says you keep your job, you've got it. You know
for this entire year, you'll be coaching next year. Now,
I think my approach is a little different. I have
Russ start, but I have a short leash that I
don't have any qualms. I'm not and there's no trepidation
of putting Jackson Dart in there. I've been a big

(30:28):
Jackson Dart fan. I think Orlovsky and myself were the
two who said early he was he got a first
round grade, he was going to be a first round
draft pick. Now it was at the end of the
first round. But still he's a first round draft pick.
And he is athletic. He you know, played for Lane Kiffen,
played in it, you know, a great offense, and feels
like he's ready to be able to be a starter

(30:50):
in the NFL. But if I'm Brian Dable and I'm
coaching for my job in the toughest schedule in the
NFL this year, I'm not going to play Jackson Dart.

Speaker 16 (31:00):
Not go.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
I gotta win a couple of games here, and I
think he's coaching for his job. Maybe it's in November late,
let's see what their record is going to be after
the first ten games, eight games, then you'll probably get
an idea of what management wants. Do they want to
see Jackson Dart now? You're not going to make the playoffs.

(31:22):
Maybe you're kind of in the conversation for the playoffs.
If that's the case, then maybe still stay with Russell Wilson.
I had somebody who's been to practice. They went to
three practices and they said, Russ looks great. I go,
I said, okay, but you know, I was thinking about that.
Nobody wants to hear that Russ is looking great, because

(31:43):
that's we've seen that. If you're a Giants fan, you're like, hey,
Jackson dart Man, Hey, I'm here in Jackson Dirt. Hey,
Russ is looking great. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, But what
about Jackson dart because that's the future here. And I
think that's going to be a big, big issue for
the Giants coaching staff this year. They are coaching for

(32:05):
their jobs and those first eight games, there's no let up.
There gonna be tough, all right, More phone calls coming
up and uh coming up next though Play of the Day.

Baseball Number fifty Forcal Rowley. He becomes one of only

Speaker 2 (33:05):

thirty from the left side, twenty from the right side.

the poll results. If you can seating for the first
forty six minutes of the program.

Speaker 5 (33:33):
Well, I'm kind of kicking around one right now, but
it might be a little crazy. I had to actually
if you could sign one in their prime Aaron Donald, TJ.
Watt of Chris Jones and Ray Lewis Aaron.

Speaker 2 (33:46):
Donald, no question, Yes, yes, well, ray Lewis now wouldn't
be as impactful.

Speaker 3 (33:55):
Aaron Donald is going to be impactful in any generation. TJ. Watt,
Miles Garrett, all great players. Give me Aaron Donald.

Speaker 5 (34:01):
So I'm going through sort of like the last twenty
years or so, and who are the most valuable defensive
player based on like all of these different metrics, And
the two names that come up over and over again
is Aaron Donald and TJ. Watt are by far apparently
just for value, they are the guys, right. Chris Jones
and Ray Lewis are also mentioned a whole bunch of times.

(34:23):
But then I have another one that if you could
sign one of these guys in their prime, and this
is expanding to different positions, sort of the best in
their group, Aaron Donald, Miles Garrett, Luke Keigley comes up
a lot in terms of valuable or value, and then Darrell.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
Reevs Aaron Donald. Still Aaron Donald.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Yes, Aaron Donald's going to make every other defender better
because he's already putting pressure on the quarterback. He disrupting everything.
You know, Revis is probably one of the few people
in NFL history who is a Hall of Famer. But
we really don't remember any of his plays right, not

(35:06):
during a game. Yeah, maybe you would seem Jos jostling
with a wide receiver, but they wouldn't throw his way.
Who was it that Dion won the defensive MVP? But
there was a defensive back who was bragging that he
had more interceptions than Don that year.

Speaker 9 (35:25):
Yes, Marvin Sante Samuel has more career interceptions than Dion Sanders,
but he probably got thrown to way more than Deon Sanders.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
Yes, that's what I want to know. How many throws
were in your direction so you could get all those inners.
There's a reason why you got all those interceptions. They
they're not throwing to revs. They're not throwing to Dion.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:45):
Paulie Durel Reeves's third year in the NFL, he had
six picks and he was AP first team second for
Defensive Player of the Year. His next season, he had
zero interceptions and was first team All Pro. That's got
to be a record. Oh my, zero.

Speaker 1 (36:07):
Out of the day.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
It brought to you by Panini America. Luke Keighley is
one of the more underrated players in NFL history, certainly
modern era, because I think he played eight years. But
he was great and he was really good in coverage
as well, and had to retire due to concussions. But
he was twenty nine years of age when he retired.

(36:31):
But Luke Keighley is a Hall of Famer. He was
a great player, great player. All right, A couple more
phone calls Bill in Washington, Hi, Bill, what's on your
mind today?

Speaker 14 (36:41):
Well, hey boys, you guys yourself a sweet six six
three twenty So I just want to wait on the
Andrew Luck situation. If he would have played a full career,
there's no doubt in my mind, he would have been
one of the greatest quarterbacks to play. He would have
won super Bowls. They would have built a team around him,
they would have give him an O line. He would

(37:03):
have succeeded. However, we all play this game called life.
So if you have a chance to become a millionaire,
walk away, provide for your family, still stay healthy. Why
the hell not? All right?

Speaker 3 (37:15):
Well, thank you, Bill.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
It's you know, we wonder why somebody does something or
doesn't do something. You got to know how Andrew Luck
is wired or Barry Sanders is wired. It's just different
because what we think would be really hard to walk
away from and it probably was for them. They have
to have they have to be at peace when they

(37:38):
make that decision. And I remember talking to Barry because
he always wanted to play for the Raiders, and when
I had a chance to talk to him after he retired,
and he said there were teams that reached out and
wanted to see if he would play in a different location,
that maybe that would spark his interest, that he would
be excited to play for a good team. And Barry

(37:59):
was he was like, nope, made my He made his
mind up and that was it. He was not coming back.
Tim in Vegas, Hi, Tim, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 15 (38:09):
Hey?

Speaker 16 (38:09):
Dan, I just want to touch on the Jim Brown
retirement a little bit. He was in London filming the
iconic movie The Dirty Dozen when he gets a phone
call from Art Modell that says you need to come
to training camp or you're out. Jim Brown at the time,

(38:29):
an activist, very big personality, said you know what, Art,
I'm out, Thanks again, Dan?

Speaker 3 (38:36):
All right, thank you? Tim? Who is it Lee?

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Marvin? Was he in The Dirty Dozen? And who else
was in that movie? There were some big time stars
in there.

Speaker 4 (38:49):
Yeah, Paulie, Lee Marvin Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Ernest borgnine
and Charles Bronson.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
Ooh okay, ass yeah, I like that. Wow, Jeff and Denver? Hi, Jeff,
what do you have for me?

Speaker 15 (39:03):
Moren DP?

Speaker 3 (39:04):
How are you good?

Speaker 1 (39:05):
Sir?

Speaker 3 (39:06):
Good? Hey?

Speaker 15 (39:08):
First time Long time sixty two and the Firm one
ninety five. I got a suggestion for a pole question
this morning. Should Keegan Bradley call his own number in
the Ryder Cup? Last person to do it was Arnold
Palmer nineteen sixty three. If Keegan wasn't captain, he would

(39:28):
for sure be on the team, probably should have been
on in twenty three. Just wanted to get your and
everybody else's thoughts on that. Thanks very much.

Speaker 2 (39:35):
I hope he doesn't pick himself. I think it's a
great story. But you're kind of setting yourself up if
you don't win. Were you devoting your time to what
you needed to vote your time to? And if you
don't play well in the Ryder Cup, is your head elsewhere?
I just and I like Keegan In fact, I think

(39:59):
do I still have that belt?

Speaker 3 (40:00):
Paul?

Speaker 2 (40:02):
I think it's a red belt I have to check
I have when he won the what PGA championship. He
sent me that red belt and I thought I had
it up front. Here you see it, and Pauli's coming
in to see. Let me see there it is. Okay,

(40:25):
if you're watching on Peacock, that's uh, that's an Oakley
red belt there, Kegan Bradley, I got somebody silly pieces
of memorabilia, but that's uh.

Speaker 3 (40:37):
He might have put on a little weight when he
was Yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
Yeah, so I have the belt from when he I
think he won the PJA championship. But I just don't
want him to be set up for failure that if
they don't us doesn't win, you know, and he's playing,
then he should have been just coaching.

Speaker 9 (41:02):
Yes, Marvin, sorry, going back to Santi Samuel, e me.
Dion has more career interceptions, but Sanci Samuel had more
interceptions in a single season than Dion.

Speaker 3 (41:12):
No, okay, clear that up.

Speaker 9 (41:14):
Yeah, thank you, No, no trust me because hey, well actually
social media will be on me if I got it wrong.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
Okay, good, thank you. Yeah, we sometimes get it right sometimes.

Speaker 1 (41:30):
What's it?

Speaker 3 (41:30):
What that just changed our pole question for hour two?
I'll tell you that.

Speaker 2 (41:34):
What's it like to get cut seven times? Ben Denucci,
who did start a game for the Cowboys during COVID
against the Eagles, and he got cut over the weekend.
He'll join us coming up. One Hour of the Books,
