Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We did it.

Speaker 3 (00:05):
We made it to a Friday football coming up tonight.
Last night, if I would have said these things are
going to happen, you would probably said, wait, guy gets
injured on the first play of the game. Then their
star defensive player ends up getting tossed for spitting on
the quarterback, and the Cowboys look great Ceedee Lamb looks
great in the first half, bad in the second half.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Cowboys have a chance to win this game.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Jalen Hurts was the best player on the field. And
then there's lightning, and then there's an hour long delay,
and somehow the Eagles held on. All of those things
happened last night. A lot of things in between we'll discuss.
But it's a meat Friday. And in case you're wondering,
meat ball subs brought worst bacon cheeseburgers. And we want

(00:53):
to thank our new sponsor, Heartland Steaks Company. They provided
everything and and it looks good. Who has it better
than we do? Nobody merch store. It's open, open for business.

we say good morning to our radio affiliates. Eight seven
to seven three DP Show Operator Tyler sitting by taking
your phone calls. There was a lot to take in
last night. I thought that the Cowboys would keep it close.
I thought it was going to be a three point game.
Ended up before point game, and Dallas probably should have

(01:57):
won that game because if you look at the first half,
back and forth and Dallas was kind of holding its
own no Jalen Carter, they took advantage of that. Ceedee
Lamb looked great. You know, it's probably hard to say this,
but it's true. Ceedee Lamb had seven catches for one
hundred and ten yards and didn't have a good game
because in the second half he cost them dearly and

(02:21):
coming into this season, he has had four career games
with three or more drops. That's more than any player
since twenty twenty. Stat of the Day Rod hubon Panini America,

(02:41):
the Official Trading Cards of the Dan Patrick Show. This
is one of those games that if you put it
in a time capsule and people go, how good was
Jalen Hurts? Now aside from the Super Bowls? But if
you said just a regular season game, let me see something,
let me see why he's the top five quarterback have
been the game last night because Saquon Barkley was good,

(03:04):
AJ Brown non existent. DeVante Smith had a couple of
catches in there. But if I combined all their yards,
I don't even think they have one hundred yards total.
That was Jalen Hurts. So you have your best defensive
player who's out and he seemed to take over the moment.
He did the right thing at the right time. First
in completion was in the second quarter. He played great,

(03:28):
and he took advantage of the middle of the field
when he was running when he was back to pass,
and then decided to get out of the pocket and
ran for a couple of touchdowns. That was all Jalen
Hurts last night the best player on the field, and
he's now I know his odds to win the MVP.
I don't even think he's a top five MVP candidate

(03:51):
because he's not going to put up incredible numbers. This
is a guy who played quarterback last night. This wasn't
a guy who was passing. He was a quarterback last night.
And this goes with game managing, which I know that
there are quarterbacks who think that, you know, this is
a disparaging remark, and it's not. It's understanding what you

(04:11):
need to do, and he did it. If I said
game master instead of game manager, is that better? Because
that's what this is.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
To me.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
That was old school football of I don't care what
my numbers are.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
We're going to win.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
And he proved that whatever you needed him to do
last night, he did, and that's what you want out
of your quarterback. Now I've said on record, I didn't
think he was a great quarterback. I just think he's
great for that team, and we're going to hold it
against him that he's got maybe the best front office
in football. And you got Saquon there, you got an

(04:48):
incredible offensive line, you got two good receivers, a good
tight end, and it's almost like, yeah, well, Jalen Hurts
kind of had a head start here. He's got a
lot of talent around him. So did Patrick Mahomes. Yeah,
the best coach in the NFL, A great GM Hall
of Fame tight end, Tyreek Kill, you had, you know,

(05:10):
good offensive line. I'm like he had a head start too.
I just I think we grade Jalen Hurts on a
curve that somehow Yeah, but yeah, but watched last night.
Yeah but last night he did what you want your
quarterback to do, and it was wonderful to watch.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Brilliant, surgical, Yes, Marvin, I.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
Think the main reason why it's going to be so
tough to him for him to win League MVP is
because he's gonna get dinged for his team being so good,
because somebody's gonna say, oh, if I had that team,
of course, I'd throw thirty touchdowns in rush for ten
touchdowns two.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, I get it.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
I don't know if we hold him to the same standards,
or maybe we hold him to a higher standard than
we do other players. You know, Josh Allen. We don't
talk about any around Josh Allen. It's just Josh Allen
being Josh Allen. Lamar Jackson now has Derrick Henry and
he's won two MVPs. But you start, you know Joe Burrow,

(06:10):
well he doesn't have a defense. Well he does have
maybe the best wide receiving cores in the NFL. But
we look at Jalen Hurts differently because this is a
stats driven league, stats driven award, and it's ought to
say that Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen
didn't have wonderful years. I'm just talking about value, and

(06:31):
I think you could say this with all sincerity. You
get to the playoffs. Give me, how many quarterbacks would
you take over Jalen Hurts in the playoffs? Okay, because
that's where I see real value. Regular season, Okay, Lamar
is gonna be great, Josh Allen's gonna be great, Joe
Burrow's going to be great. How many of those quarterbacks

(06:53):
are you taking over Jalen Hurts. You're gonna take Mahomes.
I might take Josh Allen. Josh Allen's been a good
performer in the postseason. He hasn't been able to get
by Kansas City. We've seen Joe Burrow make a run
Lamar Jackson. I'm not taking Lamar Jackson over him. Run

(07:14):
down the list of other quarterbacks there, I'm probably going
to have Mahomes and then Jalen Hurts, Jayden Daniels.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Hadn't shown me enough yet.

Speaker 6 (07:24):
C J.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Stroud hadn't shown me enough yet. I mean, this is
a guy who outplayed Mahomes in two Super Bowls. He
won one, but he outplayed him. He could have two
super Bowls, two MVPs. If you look at what he
did in those Super Bowls.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
I know it's high.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Praise, hyperbole, probably overreaction, but I did see it almost
felt like the game was slowing down for him. He
just saw everything in a different way. And sometimes it,
you know, crystallizes with quarterbacks. You know, your first year
or second or third or fourth. But if you look

(07:59):
at and Chris Collinsworth brought this up, the guy plays
for championships, whether it's you know, college or the NFL.
He's in championship moments there and it didn't seem too
big last night, and his demeanor doesn't change. He is
pretty cool and it was on display last night. Now

(08:20):
the headlines will be what happened to start the game
when Jalen Carter spit on Dak Prescott, and I, you know,
you got to have context with this. Now it doesn't.
I'm not exonerating Jalen Carter in the moment. I didn't
have any context. Nobody did because I didn't know that
Dak Prescott was spitting when he was in the huddle.

(08:41):
You know, they're waiting for the you know, the official
has to say, all right, you can break the huddle.
Now we can get started, and Jalen Carter is probably
five feet away maybe from Dak Prescott, and maybe his
interpretation was, wait a minutes, he's spitting in an hour direction,
and then Jalen Carter comes over and then all of
a sudden, you see him spit on Dak Prescott.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (09:04):
The thing that does make that a little funny is
they're clearly drawing at each other, I think, because Jalen
Carter is all by himself waiting there, and Dak walks
four or five yards in order to spit between those
two his two teammates. Yea, so it's not like he
was just standing there and spit. Dak walks almost five

(09:24):
full yards. That's further than you think in order to
spit between those guys when he could have just spit
right at his own feet. Instead, he walked and approached him.
That some of the video does start to make it
look like there was a lot more going on there.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Here is Dak talking about the spitting incident.

Speaker 8 (09:39):
I was right here by the two linemen, and I
guess I needed to spit and I wasn't gonna spin
on my liman and I just.

Speaker 9 (09:44):
Spit a head.

Speaker 8 (09:45):
But I'd say he was back there where Joelry was
in that sense, and he asked, or he goes, you're
trying to spin on me? And at that point, I mean,
I felt like like like he was insulting me, like
I don't I wouldn't spin on somebody. I'm damn sure
not trying to spit on you. They're about to play
a game. I'm I was wondering why you're trying to
mess with the rookiets. When I stepped through, I actually
say the words like what the hell would I excuse me?
But I'm probably even more colorful, what would I need

(10:06):
to spend.

Speaker 9 (10:07):
On you for?

Speaker 8 (10:07):
And he just spent on me in that moment and
was more of a surprise than anything. Refs obviously saw
it through the flag. I was like, hell yeah, we
get fifteen yards to start the game off, and the.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Rep is right there. Really easy call. I mean, Dak
kind of goes, uh, hello, he just spent on me.
Here's Jalen Carter talking about his side of the story.

Speaker 10 (10:29):
You know it was a mistate I have on my
on my side. You know, he just won't happen a game.
I feel bad for just my teammates and the fans
out there. You know, I'm doing it for them. You know,
I'm done for my family also, But depends. You know,
they saw the most love you heard them my day.
You know, he's just not being able to finish and
start the game, even defends the game.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
Just up you getting better.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
I won't having a gag.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Okay, the NFL has placed a large emphasis this year
and that this was a topic in the offseason with
teams and players respect for the opponent.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
That's a big factor.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Ross Tucker, who was doing the game on Westwood One,
talked about that as well. It's a really really big
point of emphasis. So the next question will be will
Jalen Carter be suspended? And I think I think given
the context of this now once again, he got suspended
for the entire game, and I think the league may

(11:30):
factor that in. Now do they find him. I would
be surprised if they suspend him for another game. If
he did this in the second half of the game
last night, then maybe he would be suspended for the
following game. But he got suspended now. In my opinion,
it might be a fine, but I would be surprised
if they're going to suspend him again.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Doesn't exonerate him for what he did.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
I understand what he's doing in the moment, and it
wants got to give these things context because obviously you
see it at the moment, and I'm going, why would
he spit on him? To start this season? And once again,
these guys are hyped up. They've been in the locker room,
they're ready to go. It's Opening night, Banner night playing

(12:14):
the Cowboys, ready to go?

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Wait are you spitting at me?

Speaker 3 (12:18):
And then he approaches Dak and then all of a
sudden he gets tossed.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
What a wild start to the game. Wild start.

Speaker 11 (12:27):
Yeah, I'd barely even settle down. I don't really even
have the sound up, and I see a flag going
the air. I'm like, did they run a play and
it was like that scene in Slapshot, the hockey movie
where the guy punches the other guy during the national
anthemic how's the flag going on?

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Before the game started?

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Philadelphia is lucky to get a win, really lucky. Now,
I always look at these losses at the beginning of
the year. We tend to look at losses at the
end of the year. Remember what I said on that
Monday morning when the Bengals lost to the Patriots. I said,
that's the kind of loss that comes back and keeps

(13:05):
you out of the playoffs. And that's exactly what happened.
You're gonna have sloppy football this week and probably next
week because most of these players haven't played, and if
they have, it's just a little bit. And last night
was kind of sloppy, or as Paul he would say, choppy.
But I thought Dallas did enough to win that game.
I just didn't understand why there wasn't And I'm sure

(13:28):
Dallas had a spy on Jalen Hurts. He didn't do it.
I mean, he wasn't James Bond. I mean he didn't
do a very good job. He was really good at
hiding the fact that he was the spy on Jalen
Hurts because Jalen Hurts felt like he had room to
run and this wasn't a tush push. He was able

(13:48):
to score legitimate touchdowns. But Saquon he played okay. AJ
Brown had a couple of targets, DeVante Smith Scoddard had
some catches there. But this was one of those games
where if I'm Dallas and Brian Schottenheimer, that's his first
NFL game as a head coach, and I thought he

(14:11):
did a pretty good job. I thought they made enough
plays to win that game, and that's one of those
if they had stolen that game, man, what would we
be talking about?

Speaker 7 (14:22):
Yeah, seton last night watching the Eagles, it was kind
of like a perfect example to me of why you
need name brand players at skill position at the skill positions,
because you can't. Saquon Barkley is a name brand, right,
and he's a guy I.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Thought he looked great. Right.

Speaker 7 (14:41):
You have two superstar caliber wide receivers you can't. And
then plus you have Jalen Hurtz who was killing him
last night. How are you going to cover everybody? You
kind of can't. That's to me, it was like the
Ultimate View again into like this is why you pay people,
this is why you have stars at those positions.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
We'll get to phone calls, we'll settle on a poll question.
All of that forthcoming south palm Antonio, he was there
last night in Philadelphia. He'll join us, and the NFL
Network analyst Steve Smith Senior will join us a little
bit later on as well, just settling in on this
meet Friday.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
I know the Clippers owner Steve Ballmer denied knowing about
any of this with Kawhi Leonard with Ramona Schoburn last
night on The mother Ship. Pablo Torre, who is doing
the investigation, sent out a tweet saying that that he
can now confirm that Aspiration the company that gave Kawhi
Leonard a secret twenty million dollar side deal, combined with

(16:24):
Kawhi's secret twenty eight million dollars no show endorsement deal,
that adds up to forty eight million dollars. Pablo Torre
then says, we previously reported Steve Baumer's personal Aspiration investment
was fifty million dollars. A lot of smoke here, A

(16:47):
lot of smoke. Now, maybe Steve found a loophole. Maybe
that's what this is, found a loophole, and maybe the
NBA closes these loopholes. I'd be curious if Steve introduced
Kawha to Aspiration, one of the sponsors of the team,
what other players has he introduced to other sponsors of

(17:08):
the team. Is this commonplace? Is this commonplace with other
NBA owners and players, maybe other sports as well.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
Hey, we're going to get you a side deal.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
Well, a side deal might be maybe a five million
dollar endorsement deal, spokesperson, something that's forty eight million dollars.
And Steve Bamer invested fifty million dollars. It's not a
big leap to go forty eight fifty circumvent the salary cap. Well,

(17:41):
we'll let you know when we get more on this.
Southpal Antonio, ESPN national correspondent covering the NFL soupal.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
How are you, buddy, Dan, Great to.

Speaker 9 (17:51):
Be with you this morning, Thanks for having me on
the show.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
Let me start with the bigger picture, the actual performance
of the game. Then we'll get to Jalen Carter. But
what did last night ten tell you about the Eagles?

Speaker 13 (18:03):
That Jalen Hurst can get you out of anything? I
think you know that's been talked about for the last
twelve hours, but it's true. So here comes Matt Eberflus,
the new defensive coordinator of the Cowboys, and he decides
to play Matts Zone, and they take away AJ Brown,
and they limit Devonte Smith, and they stack the box

(18:25):
on sae Quon Barkley. But you know, it's sort of
a pick your poison thing. With the Eagles offense, because
if you don't have some kind of spy operation, effective
spy operation, or spy who can match up to Jalen
Hursts as a runner, you're dead. Your d IW you

(18:46):
got no chance. Because this guy's too strong, too smart.
He understands how to decipher it pre snap. He gets
that snapshot, that Peyton Manning snapshot pre snap. Then the
ball is snapped and he's got another snapshot and he
is recognizing and deciphering what defenses are doing. He did

(19:08):
it against Steve Spagnolo a Super Bowl fifty nine. It's
one of the more unheralded stories about Super Bowl fifty nine.
And the reason why Jalen Hurts won the MVP in
Super Bowl fifty nine is because he's really become an
effective recognition guy.

Speaker 9 (19:27):
And I mean, I disagree with Tom Brady.

Speaker 13 (19:32):
I think Jalen you know, he's got great athletic skill,
but he's really great at deciphering what defenses are doing
pre and post snap.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Love was Brady's criticism.

Speaker 13 (19:44):
Well, Brady said that I think last week he was
doing one of those media tours and he said that
right now quarterbacks are not as cerebral as they once were,
and that may be true in a general sense.

Speaker 9 (20:00):
I think the two guys that were in the.

Speaker 13 (20:01):
Super Bowl last year, that's not true Patrick Mahomes and
Jalen Hurts. It's certainly not true for Lamar Jackson, Joe
Burrow and Josh Allen, and certainly not true for Jayden Daniels.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
Yeah, that feels like it's you guys get by on
your athleticism, whereas you know me and Breeze and Peyton,
we got by on out smarting the opposition. And you're
right with Mahomes. Mahomes in any generation. And I thought
Jalen Hurts last night, aside from the two Super Bowls,

(20:34):
like that's a game that you I'm gonna pin on him.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
He won the game last night. He won the game
by making smart decisions.

Speaker 3 (20:41):
They take away everybody, and when they needed a big play,
they got it and I loved it. And I've said
before I didn't consider him a great quarterback. I think
he's he's great as the quarterback of the Eagles. He's
the right guy for that team, and I might have
to upgrade that to being a great quarterback. I don't
know if he cares about where he's ranked in those

(21:04):
kind of lists.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
But man, a guy.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
Wants he's a winner, I think, and that might be
the ultimate compliment that you give any athlete.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
He's a winner.

Speaker 13 (21:13):
I was in Brazil last year for their opener. As
you remember, he turned the ball over three times. They
still won the game last night, super efficient didn't turn.

Speaker 9 (21:24):
The ball over, and you know they had.

Speaker 13 (21:28):
Thirty eight rushing attempts. If you have thirty eight rushing
attempts in the National Football League to go along with
twenty three completions, you take those two numbers, that's the
vermial formula. It is rushing attempts and completions, and you're
gonna win a lot of football games if you don't
turn the ball over because of the efficiency. I agree
with Sirianni's postgame comments about that. But the dovetail to

(21:52):
the Jalen Carter deal. If I'm Jalen Carter, Dan, I
walk across the locker room and I say to Jalen Hurts,
let me write a big fat check to your.

Speaker 9 (22:04):
Charity for bailing me out.

Speaker 13 (22:06):
Because if Jalen Hurts doesn't bail out the Eagles last night,
and bail out by me, I mean Jalen Carter. We're
all talking about only the Eagles losing because Jalen Carter
was thrown out for spitting before the ball was snapped.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
There's a lot more to that, like giving it context
of looking at it, and you know, I've had the
benefit to look at it all morning long of seeing
Dak Prescott's role, because Dak does play a role in
this now and now it doesn't exonerate Jalen Carter. But
if you look at Dak where he is and he said, wow,
I couldn't spit on my alignment, Well, he's like seven

(22:44):
yards back and then walks up in between his linement
and then spits, and then I think there's a wink
to Jalen Carter. Jalen Carter then goes way a minute,
what's going on? They're drawing back and forth and he
spits on it. How do you think the NFL well
will assess Jalen Carter any punishment after this?

Speaker 9 (23:05):
Good question. Don't know. The forensics are obvious. You just
laid it out.

Speaker 13 (23:11):
They're going to go through that, and they're going to
go through that with an eye towards their point of
emphasis in the offseason, which is we want to cut
down on the unsportsmanlike behavior of NFL players.

Speaker 9 (23:24):
So there's that lens that we have to put on it,
and we.

Speaker 13 (23:28):
Also have to put on it the fact that Jalen
Carter has been penalized what fourteen times in the last
two seasons his first two years with four personal fouls,
which is tied for most in the league. So this
is an NFL problem right now that they have to
figure out what to do. I don't think they should

(23:48):
suspend Jalen Carter. I don't because he already really served
the full game suspension in my view, by getting ejected
before the ball was snapped. I think he's already it's
time served. Yeah, I'm saying so, and looking at Dak
Prescott's role, I agree with you. Both of them will

(24:10):
probably get fined a big fat fight and maybe there'll
be a suspension. But I don't think that Jalen Carter
should be suspended. But the other thing, too, Dan is
big picture. Widen out the lens here. Jalen Carter wrecked
the divisional game against the Rams, wrecked the NFC Championship game,

(24:32):
wreck the Super Bowl, and allowing Josh Sweat and Milton
Williams to climb all over Patrick Mahomes the second in
that football game. He's the And I study some film,
not as much as my colleagues at NFL Films, and
I get the numbers from our guys. He's the most
double team defensive tackle in the NFL last year, So

(24:54):
that allows so many other things to operate because he's
on the field.

Speaker 9 (25:00):
I'm gonna throw the name out there.

Speaker 13 (25:02):
He's Jerome Brown two point zero because of the way
he occupies the middle of the field. And as Nick
Sirianni said last night, we gotta have this guy on
the field.

Speaker 9 (25:15):
So it's up to the.

Speaker 13 (25:16):
Eagles front office, the players council. I talked to Lane
Johnson after the game last night. He said, the players'
council is gonna get involved figure out how to fix
Jalen Carter, who, by the way, Dan, he's on a
track to be one of the highest paid defensive players
ever at the tackle. The Eagles let a lot of

(25:38):
guys go because they know they got to pay Jalen Carter.

Speaker 9 (25:41):
But if this continues, what do they do?

Speaker 3 (25:44):
Talking to South pal Antonio, ESPN national correspondent covering the NFL, Yeah,
I picked him as my Defensive Player of the Year.
He has entered that Aaron Donald category of yes, he
is going to disrupt and you're right, you know those
kind of players they're few and far between, but he's
almost going down that in Dominican Sue path where you know,

(26:08):
it's it's not the opposition, it's him. It's the personality
that he brings onto the football field.

Speaker 9 (26:15):
Well, you know, I've been around him a little bit.

Speaker 13 (26:18):
He's a tremendous player. But they've got to figure out
how As Sirianni said last night, and I agree with
Nick about this, he said, I want my players to
play with passion, but within the rules, and so now
they've got to make sure this guy gets it right.

Speaker 9 (26:37):
However they're going to do that, he.

Speaker 13 (26:40):
Has to get it right because you know he's You're right,
he's on the doorstep of Defensive.

Speaker 9 (26:45):
Player of the Year.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
I guess everybody would say the same thing watching the
game that if they had a spy on Jalen Hurtz,
that spy did a good job of staying undercover because
we never really saw him. Does Micah Parkerson's make that
much of a difference last night? If they have him
and they don't have Clark.

Speaker 9 (27:05):
Yes, one hundred percent.

Speaker 13 (27:08):
They they're you know, Michael Parsons is just so athletic
and so smart.

Speaker 9 (27:13):
Light him up anywhere and he disrupts his speed.

Speaker 13 (27:16):
His speed, he can track down guys including Jalen Hurts. Yes,
one hundred percent Michael Parsons. I mean, imagine you're Matt
Eberfluss and and you're head coach, and they're saying, we're
going to have this guy on the field week one,
and then all of a sudden, he poof, he's gone.
By the way, I'll have what Howie Roseman's having because
the Giants just sort of give up on Saint Quon

(27:38):
Barkley and then the Cowboys the next year trade Michael Parsons.
I mean, how he didn't have to lift the finger
and two division rivals got rid of the best two players.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
Dan, great to talk to you as always. Congrats. Contract extension,
that's correct, contract extension.

Speaker 9 (27:57):
I'm still here, Dan, still here?

Speaker 2 (27:59):
How many years?

Speaker 13 (28:00):
This is year thirty at the mother Ship as you
like to call it, and listen, as you know, you
have great support and love here and it's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
Thanks for joining us, Soel.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
Congrats sal Palatonio, ESPN national correspondent overring the NFL thirty years.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
I survived eighteen.

Speaker 11 (28:23):
Yeah, Pauline, Sal dropped the phrase dead in the water,
diw because he was in the Navy years ago, and
that reminds me of the Houston Super Bowl incident where
you and that guy and Sal was right to the
right of you.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
Wait, did we find out if Sal was a Navy seal?
Is Sal still up there?

Speaker 1 (28:40):
Sal?

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Were you a Navy seal?

Speaker 13 (28:41):
I was not a Navy seal DNA. We actually talked
about this in Scottsdale. I was a surface warfare officer. Okay,
I do remember that incident in Houston, and this is
where I get out of the zoom call right now.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Okay, it wasn't an incident. It could have been an incident.

Speaker 9 (29:01):
Yes, that's true.

Speaker 11 (29:02):
Okay, thank you Sal. Yes, Paully, I had to be
complimentary Sal. As a wingman. This guy was in your
face a little bit in a bar, and it was
a lively bar and it felt like something might happen.
And Sal was right next to you. He had his
arms cocked like he was going to make a tackle,
like he was ready if an incident happened.

Speaker 3 (29:21):
But yeah, he was. This guy was upset about something.
I don't know, like you guys make fun of or
why don't you cover?

Speaker 6 (29:28):
I have no idea.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
And I realize it's starting to get serious. And Sal
is right next to me, and Sal has got his
eyes right on this guy, right right on him, and
if it if the guy lifts his arm up, Sal's.

Speaker 2 (29:46):
Going after him.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
And I was like, damn, this is getting a little
little tense. Sal's right here to my right, and I'm going,
all right, if the guy hits me, then you know,
Sal will take care of him, and uh, I just
for some reason, it kind of quieted down a little bit.

(30:08):
Now there's part of me that wanted to see Sal
in action here because I'm like, all right, I'm here.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
He's a Navy seal. I go, he's a Navy seal,
all right.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
So I always if Sal was going to be out
or i'd see Salad, I don't you know, I'd hang
out with Sal. I think probably more so that he
was a Navy seal than I enjoyed his company. It
was like anything happens, I got Sal Palantonio here. Maybe
not as much now because he's not a Navy seal.
But whatever he was, it sounded pretty important there South,
So thank you again for having my back or my

(30:40):
front or my side or whatever it was.

Speaker 11 (30:43):
Yes, Pauline, I also heard that Ed Werder was CIA
Black Ops Day.

Speaker 6 (30:46):
Is that true?

Speaker 2 (30:47):
I heard that.

Speaker 6 (30:48):
That's going around lately.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
John Clayton worked for a masad. He was a massad agent.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
People don't realize that, but yeah, Johnny and Johnny good times. Yep,
that was the good old days there. Dave in South Dakota, Hi, Dave,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 4 (31:07):
Hey Dan? Thanks Tagan to call nobody I have. I
want to widen the lens even further on Jailen Carter
and ask why was Jalen on the Cowboys side of
the ball in the first place? Where were the Eagles coaches?
Where were the officials? Jalen and the Cowboys are out there?
Nothing good can happen.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
You're right, You're right. He was three yards on the
other side. You're right.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
And that's where somebody has to know. There's certain guys
where you go keep an eye on him, like in
Dominican su Yeah, got to keep an eye on him.
His teammates, keep an eye on him. And that was
the situation where you know, now maybe you're saying to yourself, Okay,
we haven't even started yet, what's going to happen? But

(31:56):
if he's approaching, then all of a sudden, it's like
I got somebody got to grab him and just say,
get what are we doing?

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Let's go? You know? How about how about the proactive
here not reactive?

Speaker 8 (32:10):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (32:11):
Chris and Maryland? Hi Chris, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 4 (32:15):
What's going on?

Speaker 9 (32:16):
Then?

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Hey Chris?

Speaker 9 (32:18):
Okay, quick question.

Speaker 4 (32:19):
So after an incident like last night, when the refs
get ready for the next game with Jalen Cardo, will
they talk about him specifically and be.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
Like, hey, we got to be on the lookout for
that guy.

Speaker 4 (32:30):
Or does that create a bias?

Speaker 6 (32:33):
No?

Speaker 3 (32:34):
I think that, you know, maybe subconsciously, Like if I'm
going to look at this honestly, I would say maybe subconsciously.
But do I expect Jalen Carter to be in a
situation like that?

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Again? I do not. But this is about his team
with him. Now, it's about him, but it's about his
team as well, not about the officials. Yes, Marvin, I
have a strong inklin at Nick Sirian.

Speaker 5 (32:57):
He's going to really give him a good pet talk
about not going over the other side of the line
of scrimmage.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Just wait until the game to go on the other
side of the line of scrimmage. Yes, yes, all right,
we'll take a break. Best week in sports. We will
have Super Bowl picks coming up. Steve Smith Senior. We'll
join us a little bit later on more of your
phone calls as well. We're back after this. Fox Sports

eighty nine Show, co hosted by Bleacher Report and the
Athletic Reporter James Palmer. Unfiltered football insight, great stories, and

(33:50):
a veterans perspective. You can continue to catch Steve on
NFL Network. Good to talk to you again. Now we
booked you before the incident last night with Jalen Carter
and Dak Prescott. So's it's just a coincidence that I'm
having you on.

Speaker 14 (34:11):
I know that that's yes, that's the coincidence. We already
had this plan. This is this is not super random.

Speaker 6 (34:17):
Can I tell you something, dam though? Yeah, when he
did that, I said, damn, I gotta talk to damn
Patrick tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
So let's go back to the Super Bowl. What is
that twenty one years ago?

Speaker 3 (34:31):
Hey, Yeah, and you're playing the Patriots. You're with Carolina
and Tyrone.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
Pool spits on you. Yeah, brought what brought about that?

Speaker 14 (34:44):
I'm not sure, you know, I'll be honest, I'm not
sure what brings about any man to feel that it's
okay to spit on another individual. But you know, I've
been thinking long, in hard about which angle you would
come at this with. You know, I've been on you

(35:06):
for years, and you you go. You don't beat around
the bush. You go straight there, right point A to
point B. And man, when I saw that first, if
you break it down, he's a damn good football player
and is about to get paid, right, he is the

(35:28):
difference maker and we saw it immediately in his absence,
But he got kicked out of the game before the
game technically even got started, right, So I wasn't there,

(35:49):
So I don't really know what I would do, And
I'm glad because I think it's pretty gross to spit
on someone, and I'm not really sure what the content
text is, and it may he let's say, Abidak, Dak
says something super duper inappropriate.

Speaker 8 (36:08):
Man.

Speaker 14 (36:09):
In my list of reactions, which could be a short
list or a long list, let's say a thousand things,
I can respond to one of them, maybe thumping someone
in an Adam's apple, But spitting is not on my
list of a thousand of my natural reaction.

Speaker 6 (36:29):
When someone says something to me that I disliked.

Speaker 3 (36:33):
I thought Dak baited him. I keep using the word
baiting because.

Speaker 14 (36:37):
I don't I don't see here's the problem. Football games
are a bait gain from the jump. But I don't
think Dak baited him into.

Speaker 6 (36:51):
Spitting on him.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
Yeah, yeah, I think he did because Dak spits in
the direction of Jalen Carter. Now that doesn't mean Jalen
Carter should have done it in front of the official,
but I think Jalen Carter, you know how you get
prior to a game are amped up?

Speaker 14 (37:06):
No no, no, no, I don't know how I get
two spit in someone's direction.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
No, no, you're just amped up. You're amped up and
then he thinks Dak is spitting in his direction. Now,
this is the guy who's been triggered. You know, when
it comes to personal foul penalties. He leads the league
in that. I mean, and that's that's all.

Speaker 6 (37:29):
Yeah, that's all. That's great.

Speaker 14 (37:30):
But you also got to understand too, he was in
their huddle, right, so that's not baiting. That's actually, uh,
I'm the leader of this huddle. You don't need to
be in here.

Speaker 2 (37:41):
Where are his teammates, Steve what.

Speaker 6 (37:44):
They're exactly where you saw? They were his team, his teammates.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
That they should have grabbed. They know that he can
be he can be baited.

Speaker 14 (37:55):
Okay, well man's well again, I wasn't there. I think
it's a disgusting act. But the unfortunate part is he's
an act of a football player. And everyone is going
to start now writing articles of when he was late
to boy scout camp right when when he you know,

(38:19):
they're gonna find all these stories now and unfortunately he
is gonna be trolled and people are gonna be saying things.

Speaker 6 (38:25):
That's the one thing, right, just the empathy.

Speaker 14 (38:30):
Level of just being a human being, of how our solar,
how our social media is today. That's all we gonna hear.
You know, he's somebody. Some idiots gonna walk up to
him one day and go, oh, don't spit on me
like they're they're gonna be saying things, and I and
I and I feel bad for him because he's a
young player who's in a very uh success who's on

(38:51):
a very successful team. They're gonna be well covered and
he now is gonna be the butt end of people's
jokes or maybe six months, but for that individual that
it's about, it's gonna feel like eternity.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
Does the NFL discipline him further? Would you.

Speaker 6 (39:12):
Again, Dan, I'm being honest, man, it's so nasty. I
don't want to touch it.

Speaker 14 (39:17):
Bro, Like, I got four kids, I wiped all their butts, right,
This is a This is the blow up diaper like
it's rock paper scissors.

Speaker 6 (39:29):
Who deals with it? Right? And a blow up is
like when they have pants on?

Speaker 2 (39:34):
Yeah? And oh I know again, I passed.

Speaker 6 (39:38):
Down the legs.

Speaker 2 (39:41):
I got four kids too.

Speaker 6 (39:42):
Look, I don't want to.

Speaker 14 (39:48):
I'm just saying I don't want to deal with it.
It's disgusting. I feel bad for the kid.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
He's Steve Smith, Senior, NFL network analysts played sixteen years
in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (39:58):
Did you ever run in to tyrone Pool?

Speaker 5 (40:03):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (40:04):
No, I haven't run into him yet. Even if I did,
I wouldn't say anything. Now it's done and over with him.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
Now you know what you told me after the Super Bowl?

Speaker 6 (40:13):
Absolutely, I know exactly what I told you.

Speaker 14 (40:15):
And that's also a place of you know, maturity if
people want to believe it. Where Man, I don't have
time at forty six years old to be sitting here tallying.

Speaker 6 (40:29):
Up all the people who have pissed me off. Bro,
that's that'd be. That's a long day.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
Come on, let's run through all the guys you're mad at.

Speaker 6 (40:36):
Oh you know sometimes you've pissed me off. Dan. If
we're gonna start right.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
So good.

Speaker 6 (40:42):
But I mean, it's it is what it is, bro.

Speaker 14 (40:45):
But at the end of the day, I'm a lot
of things, but spitting on people, No, sir, you don't
have to worry about that.

Speaker 3 (40:53):
You told me you were going to set aside fifty
thousand dollars. Yeah, yeah, for the fine if you hit
tyrone Pool.

Speaker 6 (41:01):
I mean I would sit that. I would sit aside
every year.

Speaker 14 (41:03):
I would sit aside a certain amount of money, Uh,
for my finds because I knew I was gonna give.
It's called you know, financial literacy. You know you gotta
you know, it's three things. How you divide your money up.
You gotta treat yourself. Uh, you gotta save, and then
you have to invest in yourself.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
So you know, Uh the CD Lamb first half, CD
Lamb second half.

Speaker 6 (41:27):
Yeah, man, that was tough for CD.

Speaker 14 (41:31):
You know, I've been one of those receivers or you
you I've been one of those football players in the
game and you feel like nothing you can't get out
of your own way. Nothing you can do, can can
can make it better. It's only worse. But I give
him credit. He didn't quit on his routes. His routes
weren't sloppy. He was running. He was running some of

(41:53):
these outstanding routes that he does. He just didn't finish.
I would expect that we will see improved CD Lamb
moving forward, but I mean, he's still a hecking a
football player, and it just it just sucks because if
he makes those catches, I think we're talking about this

(42:14):
game and the Cowboys possibly win it.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
But how does that happen? When do drops?

Speaker 3 (42:22):
Does it drop lead to another drop does it?

Speaker 6 (42:26):
It's so it does, but it also goes to what's
your reset? How do you reset your mind? You know,
what is your routine to get out of that.

Speaker 14 (42:37):
We all are gone to experience those those moments in
a game where you know, it's like, man, I just
I can't get out of my own way.

Speaker 6 (42:47):
I just can't. I can't get right. And that happens.

Speaker 14 (42:52):
And I mean, I remember, you know, playing in Carolina
and we had a game one time. I'm sitting on
the sideline Marcus Cooston. He dropped a few passes and
I was like, man, he's done.

Speaker 6 (43:03):
He's done.

Speaker 14 (43:05):
Because when you drop some key passes and they're still
going to you.

Speaker 6 (43:12):
And you're dropping them, that's worse.

Speaker 14 (43:15):
Because usually when you drop a few and they stop
going to you, then now psychologically you could be pissed
off that the coaching staff shut me down or they
didn't give me my opportunities. But in this one, Nah,
they kept feeding them. They kept giving him opportunities. Unfortunately,
he couldn't make the catch. So I personally think, my

(43:37):
humble opinion that it was worse for him psychologically, and
I think he's gonna he's gonna Uh, he's gonna work
on his craft so that that doesn't happen again this year.

Speaker 2 (43:47):
Who's your Super Bowl pick?

Speaker 6 (43:49):
I actually don't do Super Bowl picks.

Speaker 2 (43:53):
I don't Who will be the best team in the AFC.

Speaker 14 (44:00):
I'm excited to see how this Baltimore and Bill's game
goes because it goes down to the wire and these
two teams, and we could throw a third and fourth
in there, but Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen Man their
neck and neck is the guys who can really and

(44:21):
Joe Burrow who can challenge Patrick Mahomes with whomever Patrick
Mahomes has that receiver and tight end, he's gonna make
them better.

Speaker 2 (44:32):
Who's the best team in the NFC?

Speaker 6 (44:38):
I would saying until they proved, until their dethroned.

Speaker 14 (44:42):
I believe the Philadelphia Eagles, even though they stumbled into
the game.

Speaker 6 (44:50):
Some people saying offensively they struggled, Yeah they did.

Speaker 14 (44:54):
And they're no different than all these other teams are
gonna struggle because this is sloppy September. They haven't done
any think in August. All they've done is run around
in underwear and jocks and uh, you know, training camps
aren't what they used to be. That's why you're having
a lot of soft tissue injuries. You're seeing guys blow
hamstrings because now you're running full speed versus tempo speed.

(45:17):
In practice, you're now running against an opponent who's running
full speed as well, and the competition they're adrenaline.

Speaker 6 (45:24):
And so you're just gonna have a You're gonna have
a sloppy September.

Speaker 14 (45:29):
You know it's gonna be an awkward October, and then
all of a sudden, they'll get it right in November
and then you'll start to see teams start to cruise
and establish himself. The Philadelphia Eagles last year started off
rocky right. There were some they need this, but the
difference I think this year that really is is is
a good thing. Aj Brown didn't get going. Slim Reaper,

(45:54):
Devonte Smith, he didn't get going right. They have some
guys that were backups who are not the starters got going,
got her, Dallas got her.

Speaker 6 (46:03):
He hasn't got going.

Speaker 14 (46:04):
Sae Kwon Barkley, even Shipley coming in as as sparing them,
he got going.

Speaker 6 (46:09):
They got the.

Speaker 14 (46:10):
Running game going, so they haven't gotten the past game
tightened up completely. It's not firing on all cylinders, and look,
I think that's great. If you're not following firing all
cinders week one, that's not a problem when you have
the type of players that the Philadelphia Eagles have. But
when you're firing on all cylinders and you have these
type of players and they're not producing, that's when it's problematic.

(46:32):
I think we are sometimes complaining about how a team
wins because we're expecting a blowout instead of appreciating the dub.

Speaker 3 (46:44):
Yeah, they started out two and two last season. Is
there a hit that you took that still hurts?

Speaker 6 (46:53):
That a great question.

Speaker 2 (47:00):
No, I don't think so psychologically.

Speaker 3 (47:03):
Is there one that you just you've thought about?

Speaker 6 (47:07):
No, I'm man, I'm done football. I don't you know.

Speaker 14 (47:11):
I On my podcast in A nine with James Farmer,
we talk about, you know, things I experienced, but.

Speaker 6 (47:18):
You know that I don't miss football at all.

Speaker 2 (47:21):
But is there a hardest hit you took?

Speaker 6 (47:24):
No?

Speaker 14 (47:24):
I mean I have so unplugged as far as my
career that there are sometimes I would see something that go, oh, yeah,
that did happen because I'm just so past it and
looking at it as I'm a paper pusher man.

Speaker 6 (47:40):
I'm I'm a stat junkie that I'm a film watcher.
I don't, I don't.

Speaker 14 (47:44):
I'm trying not to put myself in their shoes because
I'm not there anymore. That time has passed, and frankly,
I don't want that time anymore.

Speaker 2 (47:54):
Could you talk to you again? You're still mad at me?

Speaker 14 (47:58):
No? No, we were just going down the list people.
I'm not still manage. If I'm still managed you, I
wouldn't have come on your show. I don't have a
problem with you. You do a great job. It was more
or less uh me being in my feelings of being
sensitive and not necessarily wanted to deal with criticism.

Speaker 6 (48:12):
But hey, we all grow.

Speaker 15 (48:14):
Good to see you again, to see you look good man,
Thank you, thank you. I'm ready to go go for
where wherever you want me to go? Oh okay, special
teams you want to go around? Uh you know, kind
of a I'll come back round. I'm kind of like
Ricky prol No you're not.

Speaker 2 (48:37):
Yeah, yeah I am, I know.

Speaker 6 (48:39):
I know Ricky Ricky was.

Speaker 14 (48:41):
Uh yeah, Well we say what we would say about
Ricky though, unlike you, Uh Ricky was he was raised
by some black guys.

Speaker 6 (48:53):
We'll end on that. Thank you, Steve, Thank you, sir,
appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (48:58):
Steve Smith, Senior NFL Network candlasts quite an appearance there.
