Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We did it. We made it to a Friday. I
was taken the under but we are here. It's a
meat Friday at that and we are fired up, and
so were the trigger grills. We have grilled ribbis, we
have strip steaks, we have filet mignon, We have garlic
butter lobster tales. We have cea scalps with pumpkin risotto.

(00:27):
Who has it better than we do?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Oh body?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
All meat and seafood provided by Heartland Heartland Steak Company.
All right, come on in, stay awhile Dan Orlovsky the
mother Ship will stop by. We'll recap what we saw
with the Ravens. And I've been telling you this the
last two weeks. Vegas is all over the Ravens to
win the AFC North and they were saying this prior

(00:53):
to these last two games that they won. Lamar Jackson's
back in a big way in the Miami Dolphins. Charles
Barkley will join us coming up a little bit later
on as well. We'll have the most most win game
of the weekend. We got baseball tonight. It's Game six
in Toronto. We'll preview that as well. College football this weekend,

(01:17):
Penn State, Ohio State, Vandy, Texas is probably the spiciest one. Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee,
USC and Nebraska. Speaking of Nebraska, Matt Ruhle, their head coach,
got an extension. I love when coaches or their agents
flirt with these other schools and their so called openings

(01:37):
and Matt rule. Penn State guy good friends maybe best
friends with the athletic director there, but they decided that
maybe they were going in a different direction. Perhaps, or
Matt Ruhle put it out there that maybe he was
interested or they were interested in him. But Nebraska said, well,
you're not going anywhere. I think he's locked up to

(01:59):
twenty through twenty thirty two. But I gave him of rays,
maybe a couple of year extension. None of these things matter,
and it's like, man, how long are you going to
be there? Man? They signed me up for ten years.
He's not going to be there for ten years. I
don't think he'll be there through twenty thirty two. None
of these guys stay ren, don't buy shuck around and

(02:22):
find out, yes, the T shirt's available. As the New
Orleans Saints have turned to Tyler shuck against the Rams.
They are like thirteen or fourteen point underdogs against the Rams.
But you can be the first on your block to
get a shuck around and find out t shirt a
happy Halloween. By the way, Dylan, I believe is the

(02:42):
only one in the building who got dressed up. Todd
was flirting with getting dressed up.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
I've had a little something. I meant to put it
on before the show started. It's not a whole outfit
or anything. It's something basic, but I'll work in it.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
How did you forget to get dressed up?

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Because I have it in the bag behind me, and
I meant to have it for the very start of
the show. It's something that's facial item. But I can
put it on an now, or I could shug it.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
No, no, okay, yea, yeah, put it on. Let me
see what you got here. Yes, Marvin, I'm gonna snitch.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
Early this morning, Fritzie was in the back room trying
out his poll questions in a stand up routine on
the brg's Today.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
All the backroom guys, they all said, oh, okay, so are
you Jason from Friday the thirteenth.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yeah, that's Jason Vori's Friday the Thirteenth's very simple hockey
mask thing.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
Okay, well, my wife thought I was han.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Able lector for some reason, so like that's kind of
disappointed me that you didn't get to who I was.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Okay, so I'll keep.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
This on until I feel like, you know, I'm starting
to not be able to breathe it and have one
of those Milwaukee situations.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
I don't take it off.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
I'm shocked that you have something that could make you
clust your folks.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, this won't be on very long because I'm already
be done, Like the oxygen's not getting through the holes.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Okay, well, I'm glad that you got dressed up. Nobody
else did, but that's okay.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
This character's not supposed to talk, which I know you
would all love if I just could not say anything
the whole.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
It's not possible today, it's impossible. I've been warned by
a couple of the backroom guys that look out. Mario,
who's the director, said good luck, good luck with Todd.
It's a Friday fritzy, but it's a Halloween Friday fritzy,
and I welcome it with open ORMs. Ton do you

(04:16):
have poll questions?

Speaker 6 (04:17):
Here?

Speaker 2 (04:17):
By the way, if you're watching on peacock, you get
to see this. Download the app if you haven't done so,
and we say good morning to our radio affiliates around
the country. Operator Tyler is sitting by. He'll take your
phone calls seat, and we'll do the poll question, honors. Okay, Todd,
Halloween related poll questions?

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Do you have on the spot?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
You have Halloween pole questions?

Speaker 5 (04:36):
I got to go out a couple of things.

Speaker 6 (04:38):
If you can hear from me.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Are you handling the pole questions or sea seating this?

Speaker 3 (04:42):
But this is just a hollow couple of Halloween ones.

Speaker 7 (04:44):
If we want to do that or we could not
do it, that's up.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
To you guys.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Okay, you can do the poll questions, Tod.

Speaker 7 (04:52):
When do you buy your Halloween candy a week before
a few days before that day?

Speaker 6 (04:57):
Never?

Speaker 7 (04:57):
I don't answer the door for trick or treat as
I pretend I'm.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Home one of those families.

Speaker 7 (05:02):
Okay, when buying Halloween candy, to what extent do you
take into accomped peanut allergies or a choking hazard? Very
much a passing thought. I don't I get what I like,
So I can consume the leftover treats.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
It's a little insensitive.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (05:16):
Scariest movie character Carrie Carrie White from the movie Carrie,
Chucky from Child's Play, Damien Thorn from The Omen, Freddy
Krueger at Nightmare on Elm Street, Hannibal Left through the
Silence of the Lambs, Jack Torrance from The Shining Jason
Vori's Friday the Thirteenth, leather Face, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Michael
Myers from Halloween. Penny Wise is hit the clown or other?

Speaker 6 (05:35):
Okay, and I had a few others.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
If you have time, well take off your mask again.
It's starting to annoy me.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Are you getting scared?

Speaker 5 (05:43):
Yes?

Speaker 7 (05:44):
Very What do you think of people who just leave
candy out in front of their door saying please just
take one or two.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
That's just playing lazy the honor system with kids in candy?

Speaker 6 (05:53):
Are you stupid or something?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Or it's refreshing to see such trust in today's youth.

Speaker 6 (05:58):
Seeton.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
You got any pull questions? I do. Okay.

Speaker 8 (06:03):
Let's say the Dolphins need a new coach, a new quarterback,
a new coach and a new quarterback or a fresh start.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Well, this is what we were talking about before the
show started. If you're the Dolphins and you're the Dolphins ownership,
do you start to sell off pieces even though you
still have two under contract? You don't know if Tyreek
Hill is going to play again. Are you going to
get rid of your best receiver in Jalen Watdall, You're
going to get rid of your edge rushers? Is this

(06:30):
a complete rebuild with a guy who's making fifty four
million dollars? I don't know what the upside is. If
I'm a coaching candidate and you're going to try to
entice me to go to the Dolphins, You're not enticing
me by getting rid of your best receiver and or
some of your edge rushers, because the Dolphins do have talent.
And that was a game. For at least one half.

(06:52):
After that, it just felt like the Dolphins were sitting
around going, eh, lamar's pretty good. When's this game over?
It just felt like, let's put a stamp on it
and mail it in. But I can't see taking the
wrecking ball and saying we're gonna rebuild, because you can't

(07:13):
get rid of Tua for at least another year. And
if you're gonna fire Mike McDaniel and you're gonna bring
me in. I'd be like, h man, this looks pretty
pretty sparse. What else do you have seton?

Speaker 8 (07:29):
Let's see, we also have Lamar Jackson running less. Is
a good thing or a bad thing? Well, we were
looking at the numbers here. I think it's a good
thing because I think he's a better passer than people
give him credit for. If you look at quarterbacks rushing attempts,
Jayden Daniels has he averages over eight carries a game

(07:50):
justin fields seven and a half. Jalen Hurts a little
over seven, Josh Allen seven, Drake May a little over six,
Jackson Dart six, Kyler mur Mury under six, Patrick Mahomes
just under six. In fact, Kyler Murray patrick Mahomes averaged
the same number of carries five point eight yards. Lamar
Jackson is down to five point two carries, Caleb Williams

(08:12):
at five and Bo Knicks at four point nine. He
is running less, and I think given the injuries here
and certainly this hamstring, I think these numbers are going
to be lower the second half of the season for him.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
But he's he's finally being given credit for being a
better passer. He loves his tight ends. You know, that's
usually his go to guys, and I think he had
three touchdown passes to tight ends last night. It's a
different offense obviously with him in there. I don't think
it's as explosive because I don't know if you can

(08:47):
rely on him to be that kind of quarterback at
least this year. But passing wise, he's he was great
last night, four touchdown passes.

Speaker 8 (08:57):
What else do we have? Got one here from Paul?
Which team's situation feels the most helpless? Browns, Dolphins, Jets, Saints, Titans.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Oh my goodness, take your pick.

Speaker 8 (09:16):
Well, let's see, I wouldn't say the Dolphins for the
reasons you just said. They have a lot of talent
on that team. It's just not working. They obviously need
to restructure a couple of things, but they got some guys.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
The Titans feels really dark, sad. I mean, you got
cam Ward, but what else do you really have there?
The Saints, it doesn't feel like that's a mess. Like
have you said, Okay, what's a mess? The Jets prior
to beating the Bengals was a mess. The Dolphins feels

(09:51):
like a mess. The Browns mess ish. But the Saints,
you know, I didn't expect anything out of them, and
it feels like, let's try Tyler Shuck, see if we
have anything here. If not, we draft a quarterback. I mean,
you just got Kellen Moore. They do have some pieces there,

(10:17):
So I would say the Titans, I mean even Carolina,
even though Carolina has got some wins. I just don't
know if you're sold on you know, Bryce Young.

Speaker 8 (10:28):
Yes, I don't know if we gave Spencer Rattler enough
of a chance, just saying I felt bad for the
lad Well.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
He did get a win, he finally got a win
as a starter for the Saints. But I want to
find out what they have in Tyler Shuck And did
they go to him sooner than I thought? Yes, I
thought he was going to be like a back half
five game, six games. You know, everybody is on the

(10:57):
fast pass, everything's expedited. It's like, we got to find
out about our quarterback and if not, we got to
move on, move on after two years.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
But I.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Titans feels pretty tough because if you look around, you
see what Mike Brable's doing with the Patriots. Like I
start there and I go Oh, like you had a
great coach and you got rid of it. You had
pieces there that you got rid of, Yes, Marvin, only if.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
They had a franchise wide receiver to throw the ball to.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yeah. Yeah. See that's the hard part with this is
it felt like they had some pieces and then all
of a sudden you start over. And I don't know
if cam Ward is good. I've seen glimpses, but you know,
I'd love to see him be able to play with
you know, if I had cam Ward in Chicago, I'd

(11:50):
like to see what he does with Ben Johnson as
his coach and all those weapons. Now it doesn't work
that way, but I don't know how you assess how
good he is. And that's the hard part because with
these teams that are struggling, you know, you got to
find out if you got a quarterback, and most of
these teams don't have a quarterback. I mean, I'm not

(12:11):
sold on tour with Miami obviously, for a variety of reasons.
Wouldn't have given the contract extension. You're going to have
a new coach probably next year, new system it put
in place, Carolina. I'm not sure about Bryce Young. I
love the kid when he came in and visited us
at the Super Bowl. You know that doesn't mean he's

(12:32):
a franchise quarterback. I'm not sure about Jacksonville. Trevor Lawrence
should be. And Paulie reminded me that Kirkirbstreet joined us
prior to that draft when Trevor Lawrence was taking number
one overall, and Herbie said at the time, this is
right before the draft. They said, now there's some questions
I have here. Now I get it. Most of your

(12:54):
quarterbacks are going to have questions. Caleb Williams had questions,
cam Ward had questions, but Trevor was supposed to be
a sure thing. That's why it's tricky. It's tricky when
you go we got our guy because some of the
some of these how many franchise quarterbacks do we have?
Not starting quarterbacks? Franchise quarterbacks.

ESPN Football Analysts. You can catch him on NFL Live
every weekday at four Eastern on ESPN. Good to see
you again. How many franchise quarterbacks are there in the NFL?

Speaker 5 (14:09):
I'd probably say twelve right now, would be my guest
off the top of my head. I mean, you'd have
to say, no question. Josh Allen at one, Drake may
Is two, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow three four. I'm not
gonna put Rogers in there just because of his age.
You know, I'm talking a little bit of longevity. C. J. Stroud,
no doubt. Mahomes what's that?

Speaker 2 (14:30):
Mahomes?

Speaker 5 (14:32):
Yeah, Mahomes Herbert. I think bo Nix is trending there,
but it's probably too early to say without a doubt.
I'll say that because I'm putting Drake May in there,
so I think Nix has done enough. Jalen Hurts, no question,
Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Jordan Love, Jared Goff, Matthew Stat.

(14:54):
I'm not gonna put Stafford in there once again because
of age, Purty Arnold. So yeah, you're probably at fourteen
to fifteen.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Man, you're friendly.

Speaker 5 (15:05):
Well, I mean depends on what you want out of
the franchise quarterback. I mean I would put the franchise
quarterback into two one group that has two tiers. The
first tier would be we win games because of you,
and that's a very small group. That's Lamar, that's Patrick,
that's Josh. Joe's probably in there. And then there's the

(15:27):
group that we win a lot of games with you,
and that's probably the group that fills up that another
ten bodies. Jaden Daniels would be in there as well.
So I mean, I'm under the belief, Dan, that this
is the best and deepest quarterback the NFL has ever seen.
I mean there's I just routed off fifteen Baker Mayfield
fifteen sixteen really really good quarterbacks that you know, Again,

(15:52):
there's only three or four that they erase everything, but
there's a ton that you win, just a bunch of.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
Games with Lamar Jackson last night. I've always felt like
the critics are analysts, maybe under rate his passing, or
they did early and he became more of a runner.
Now he's running less. It's you know, five carries a game.
With the hamstring injury, he's probably not going to run
as much. But what's that do to the offense. If

(16:22):
you're a defensive coordinator and you know Lamar is not
going to be taken off ten times a game, maybe
five times a game, how does that change your philosophy
against them?

Speaker 5 (16:32):
Yeah, I would say right now, it wouldn't. Lamar is
always a threat. You know, I don't believe there's any
defensive coordinator out there that's, you know, still not focusing
at a hyper level of Lamar and his ability to
make plays. You know, I'll go and when you sit
in these production meetings for Monday Night Football and you
talk to these defensive coordinators, one more often than not,

(16:55):
one of the things that they will bring up is
we got to make sure that we can't allow this
guy to be a scramble. And this is not Lamar,
this is most quarterbacks nowadays. I think this is the
most yards run for by all quarterbacks in the NFL
through eight weeks that we've ever seen.

Speaker 6 (17:10):
So.

Speaker 5 (17:11):
But I don't think that there's a defensive coordinator saying,
you know, or in the under the impression you don't
have to pay a ton of attention to it. It's
still such a huge part of his game. It's still
the threat that is such a huge part. Might be
a little bit different now, Dan in comparison to maybe
three four years ago, because I mean, this season's a

(17:31):
little unique because of you know, the injury. But earlier
on it was more designed runs, more runs where he
would be one of the two real options to carry
the football. Now it's more likely for him to scramble,
you know, a second down pass situation, third down pass situation.
So I still think he's equally as impactful. It's just

(17:52):
a little bit more of a secondary play rather than
a secondary option carrying the ball.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Vegas loves the Ravens. They love them to win the division,
as they should, but okay, what's missing with the Steelers?

Speaker 6 (18:06):
Then?

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Why are the Ravens going to be that much better
than the Steelers?

Speaker 5 (18:11):
Well, I think the way that Vegas sees it is,
this is the roster that for the most part won
fourteen games last year. They were historically great offensively in
Baltimore last year, and everybody on that offense is back essentially.
So part of the reason why their schedule is or
the record is what it is is because the injuries
early on and then obviously the first game in the

(18:32):
year Derek fumbles all that. But last night was the
first time we saw that group fully healthy. So we're
taking a team that last year broke historical records in
their offensive performance in production. Most of that group is back,
so they should be a very good offense. I don't
know if they'll replicate last year. And then that was
a defense last year that once again for the most

(18:53):
part back half of the season, was a top five unit.
Most of those pieces are back. It's one of the
reasons why many of us thought this was a no
brainer super Bowl contender. Matt a bk being injured is
a big deal, and so I think the understanding of
this is what the roster had accomplished last year. This
is who the roster is this year. It's relatively the same.

(19:13):
This should be a team that you know should win.
Even at sitting at three and five right now, I
mean they should sniff getting into getting to eleven and six,
ten and seven at worst, and so it's a better
roster than the Pittsburgh Sties. I still give the Steelers
the edge to win the division. I'm not panicking over

(19:34):
the two game losing streak. It's still Rogers. I wouldn't
be surprised if Baltimore chased them down because those two
losses are you know, two that they should not have allowed.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
If you ran the Dolphins. So I'm not going to
say if you were general manager, because he might not
keep his job. If you're Steven Ross, what do you
do at the trade deadline? And what do you do
by the end of the season.

Speaker 5 (19:58):
Uh trade deadline. I think Waddle's an outstanding player. I
would see if I can get real value for Wattle.
I like a lot of the things that Dolphins have done.
You don't build your football team over the long haul,
by the perimeter players getting paid a gajillion bucks. It's
just very difficult to do that unless you're ridiculous at drafting.

(20:20):
So I would see if I can get really good
kind of compensation for Wattle. I would absolutely look into
trading both of my defensive ends. Both those guys are
good players, but they've got a little bit of an
injury passed and it's obvious that that roster needs a rebuild.
That roster is devoid of talent. So both Phillips and
Chubb I would look to see if I can get

(20:40):
really good value out of them. That's probably what I
would lean on when it comes to like the trade deadline,
and think people that I would entertain moving for value.
What would I do moving forward. I'm a fan of
Mike McDaniels, I really am. I don't think my perspective
is this Dan two years ago, this offense was flying high.

(21:02):
I called the Monday night football game in Miami the
first week of December when they were playing for the
one seed two years ago, and then injuries derailed the season,
and they really have it recovered. I don't think the
guy forgot how to coach. I don't think for Tua
forgot how to play. It's easier said than done. It's
not my job on the line. But I still think

(21:25):
he can coach, and I still think that quarterback can play.
But that roster really has a lot of voids talent wise,
that would need a significant uptick and ability.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Yeah, but you didn't put Tua in your franchise quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
Yeah, I didn't. Jaden as first he either, I ran
out of names. I would put two in that group. Absolutely.
As far as ability to play. Now, the caveat the
asterisk with Tuoa is one, there's a very specific scheme
that he can only play in. It's this one. It's
the only scheme that he can really thrive. And now
I think he's one of the only guys in the

(21:59):
league that can play in that way because of the
space of their passing game and the anticipation. So that
does that, you know, hinder the coach that can be
his coach, no question. And then the two is you're
always going to have the health issues kind of looming
over the top of to it. But I would put
him in that group, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
Talking to dan or Lobski of the Mothership NFL Live
every weekday they start at for Eastern, we make a
big deal about the Chiefs and the Bills, and it
just feels like we want this to be a rivalry. Sure,
I don't know if it is a rivalry.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
Why because the Bills haven't won. Yeah, well the Bills.
I want a ton in the regular season right. So
in that regard, there's no doubt about it that it is.
They obviously haven't gotten it done.

Speaker 2 (22:48):
It's like the Colts and the Patriots when Peyton was
playing Tom. It's like the Red Sox and Yankees before
the Red Sox finally won. It's a great regular season
and then it comes to you know, nut cut in
time and they fail.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
Yeah, I think the way that the games go in
the postseason make me think a little bit more towards
this as a bonafide rivalry. Both quarterbacks have been exceptional
in those games. We don't have, you know, the the
journey of Mahomes and some of the really kind of
moments that he's had. We don't have that thirteen second

(23:28):
dump off, the Kelsey kicked field goal unless we have
that Allen performance two years ago. We don't have, you know,
the Mahomes journey unless we have Josh being unbelievable and
then the drop and the missed field goal. We don't
have that last year again with Patrick's run to the
super Bowl, unless we have that unbelievable game in Kansas City. So,

(23:49):
you know, I think because of that perform I mean,
to your point, I understand that they haven't gotten it
done in the playoffs, but they're still great games and
the quarterbacks have been great, and so I think that
bonafides ivory.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Have the Chiefs gotten into the Patriots category of their hateable, Oh.

Speaker 5 (24:06):
Gosh, yeah, they've been there. I mean, I have four kids.
We're a sports family. Part of this is because my
wife is a Philly girls. So my kids are diehard
Philly sports fans. And I say this, and I love Patrick.
My sons hate Patrick. They can't stand them, you know,
because he's not good. Yes, yes, that's the reason why.

(24:26):
I mean they are Patrick Mahomes Jalen Hurts, you know,
so much better. And I'm like, guys, Patrick's ridiculous, and
so yeah, I think there's a lot of people that
dislike them because of their success. No question.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
Do you break down Patrick Mahomes for your boys to
understand the time.

Speaker 5 (24:43):
All the time, but they don't want to listen to it.
Like they don't want to listen to it. I'll be like, guys,
Patrick Mahomes can do stuff that no one can't. The
first person out of their mouth, first name out of
their mouth would be like Jalen Hurts could do that,
you know, and I'll be like, no, Jalen's a great player,
but he's not this person, you know, and so I
break him down all the time to him. I think

(25:04):
I do that for a lot of the quarterbacks. But yeah,
Patrick is a guy that I'm aaron playing so well,
I'm like and Matthew Dad used to play, you know
with these guys, and then they make fun of me
for being old, but yeah, they're into it.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
It feels like Jalen Hurts is more of a rival
to Patrick Mahomes than Josh Allen.

Speaker 5 (25:23):
Yes, because he's gotten it done in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Yes, that's what I want to know. What do you
do when you have to win a game, when I'm
relying on you to win a game. Josh Allen's a
wonderful talent, so is Lamar Jackson. But you don't want
to be Charles Barkley or Patrick Ewing to Michael Jordan, Sure.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
Well, I would tell you that Josh and Lamar, while
in the same group of not getting it done, one
has not had it happen. Not because of his performance.
I mean, Josh has been great. Lamar is the guy
that we would sit there and go, exceptional player. He's
the one who is falling a little bit more flat

(26:03):
in those matchups and or in the playoffs than Josh has.
So I agree with you, they got to get it done.
I mean it's everyone. I think there's a vast majority
of NFL fans that look at Buffalo and look at
Baltimore and go, we hope you get it done. We
want to see you finally win it because both franchises

(26:23):
have been so good for the past five or six years.
Both quarterbacks are great. There's nothing else for either quarterback
to accomplish other than that, and so, and both organizations
are very well run. So I think there's a huge
group that would love to see a Baltimore Buffalo get
it done. But they got to get it done.

Speaker 2 (26:40):
How challenging is it on a daily basis? When you
go into the mothership you see the rundown and you
know the Cleveland Browns and Shador Sanders or the Cowboys
are going to be on there, and you got to
come up with something new, something French.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
Yeah, it's hard, I mean especially, I mean I always
say this next month is the hardest month for me
at my job. I know who like the playoff teams
are for the most part, or at least of a group.
I know what they're good at, I know what they're
not good at. I can only go on TV so
much and tell these people this team can run the ball,

(27:17):
this team can't, this team's quarterback's really good, this team's isn't.
And so you get into a little bit of a
monotony in that element, and then I know that, Okay,
the Cowboys are going to be on there. Shador is
going to be a talking point. I think being on daily,
I think the people behind the scenes know me well enough.
What do you have to say about the Cowboys?

Speaker 6 (27:37):
Nothing.

Speaker 5 (27:37):
I don't have to say anything about the Cowboys. Guys,
I don't and I don't want to talk about the Cowboys. Well,
we have to talk about the Cowboys. No, we don't.
We can go one day without talking about the Cowboys.
I mean, you know how it is at ESPN. I
always say, like some of the reality is there's so
many programs at ESPN, and it takes so much manpower

(28:00):
or to operate each program as well as they do that,
like there's a little bit of a silo reality, like
seven o'clock Sports Center is really concerned about seven o'clock
Sports Center and so they're trying to make their version
of that show as good as possible. They don't care
if eight o'clock get Up is getting you know, the
first thing out of their mouth is the Cowboys. They're
focused on theirs, and so it's challenging. I try to

(28:22):
find different ways to talk about the teams or educate
the teams or the situations. I think you just I've
learned it. Then I have to be very disciplined, you know.
I have to be very disciplined, because I think when
I was younger, you fall into the mindset if you
have to say something and then you ten minutes after
saying it, you go, why did I just say that?

Speaker 6 (28:42):
That was stupid?

Speaker 5 (28:42):
I don't actually think that way, and so I've tried
to get very disciplined about it all.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
Yeah, and look, I understand there are times when you
talk about the Cowboys that offense and Dak was playing
really well. It's a shame they don't have an average
defense because they'd be a playoff team. The Brown sit
youuation is it feels like, you know, everybody is pushing
for this Shador Sanders moment. Social media wants this badly. Yeah,

(29:09):
and I don't I hope he gets a chance to play,
you know, Dylan Gabriel, give him, you know, six seven,
eight starts. There's your sample size. Can he play? Same
thing with Shador Sanders, but being a rookie and you know,
getting pushed in there with a bad team. I don't
know if we like cam Ward. I don't know how

(29:30):
good cam Ward is because it's on a bad team
and you're gonna put him in there and then all
of a sudden it's going to be well, you put
him in there and the team's not any good either way.
It feels like you can't win in this situation.

Speaker 5 (29:44):
Yeah, I agree. I think the thing that you know
with the cam Ward thing, I think you can unequivocally
watch cam Ward throw and be like, yep, we could
do that. There's a lot to work with there. I
think your point with the Shador situation is totally fair.
The men that Shador has gathered and earned in some
ways we know why. I mean, he was a high

(30:07):
end high school recruit that went with his dad to
a small school. They were super successful. They go to Colorado,
they do a lot of successful things at Colorado. He
was a controversial draft prospect because of stories and play
and talent and how good is he and whatnot and
all that. You know. I think that Shadoor is eventually

(30:27):
going to play this season. I would not be surprised
if he plays within the next three or four games
unless things drastically change with Dylan Gabriel and his performance,
because he's just been okay, if you know, probably at best,
it's not going to be an ideal situation for Shaudor.
It very rarely is for rookie quarterbacks, certainly ones that
are drafted late, and so Shaudor is going to have

(30:50):
to make the best of it when he gets out there,
if he gets out there. But I agree, it's not
going to be the ideal situation to truly evaluate how
good he is. But that doesn't mean he can't take
advantage of it and really start to raise some eyebrows
in the building.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
What's the fan base that has a problem with you
the most?

Speaker 5 (31:09):
Whoo oh man, I'm I mean kids, I feel like
I go in stretches. Last year Pittsburgh hated me, but
I was right Kansas City, But Kansas City twists my
words more than anybody, like I'll say again, I'm trying
to I'm part of my job is to talk about that.

(31:30):
I'm not a cheerleader, you know. Part of my job
is to be critical of either performances or potential. And
so if you say something somewhat negative or you know,
foreshadowing a potential hiccup for a team, you hate them. No,
I don't. I feel like the Eagles have gone up
and down with me and some the Cowboys fans always

(31:51):
hate me. But again, I've always been right about the Cowboys.
I feel like I've been pretty dead on about the Eagles.
I've been pretty dead on about the Chiefs. Buffalo fans
for the most part, Lovey Baltimore fans hate me because
they think I stole the MVP from Lamar last year,
which I literally voted for him the year before. So

(32:13):
it's ebbs and flows, man, EV's and flows.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
That's good. Gotta be careful when you're walking through the airports,
oh man.

Speaker 5 (32:19):
No. But the funny thing is, I mean, I would
tell you that nine percent the interaction that I ever
have in public is like overwhelmingly humbling, you know, it's
very nice. And then social media, I'm like, yo, these
people are out of their mind, man. But it happens

(32:40):
most I get text messages from people. I get text
messages from family or friends saying like, stop bad mouthing us,
and I'll be like, I'm not bad mouthing you. I said,
your defense has to play better. Like you guys gave
up thirty what do you so?

Speaker 2 (32:57):
Thanks for joining us. Have a good weekend. I appreciate it.

Charles Barkley, Hall of Famer inside the NBA on ESPN.
Are you an ESPN employee? Do you get invited to
the Christmas party?

Speaker 6 (33:24):
I don't know. I didn't know they had a Christmas party.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Yeah, yeah, it's a big one. Now, I don't know.
You have to go to Bristol, Connecticut Open bar I
mean it's a big deal.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
Well, you know, you know, I was talking to Matt
Barry and Michael Eves. I've actually never been to the
ESPN studio. I want to do that before our relationship started,
and I just got busy playing golf every day this summer.
But it looks amazing. On television and campus. So but no,
I haven't got invited to the Christmas party, but I

(33:57):
do want to go see I talked to Matt Barry
and Michael Leaves and my girl al Duncan. At some point,
I want to get to see that studio on an
off day. Not that I want to work or anything.
I just want to go see you.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
Okay, how is your schedule? If you go there, they're
gonna put you to work.

Speaker 4 (34:12):
Well, that's why I'm gonna go doing the summer. Well,
I can just it. There's nothing going on except football
every day. I'm gonna make sure there's no basketball or
anything going on.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
It doesn't matter if you go in that building, you're
gonna be on ESPN News or two or NFL Live
or you know.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
I'm bussing up. I'm brushing up in my Spanish so
I can do this. I gotta get ready for I
gotta get ready for the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
You guys haven't missed a step though. Seems like you know,
gangs all back together and now has your approach to
the NBA changed at all since you're now on ESPN.

Speaker 4 (34:50):
No, it's been great. You know the guys at ESPN.
Dan I said this, and I wouldn't kissing anybody. Ass
you know, I ain't gonna kiss nobody, as that's the
best thing about having mine to listen to anybody. It's
an honor and privilege to work for ESPN because every
kid grew up wanting to be on SPN. They did,
like every kid who's ever touched any type of ball.

(35:13):
If they're being honest, if you go on ESPN, you
feel like you've made it. So it's an honor to
work for him. And we've only did three shows and
they've been great. They left us alone.

Speaker 6 (35:23):
You know. The only thing is that sucked about it is.

Speaker 4 (35:28):
In Game one on NBC, we had a great double
overtime game, which was awesome. Then the next night we
had Winby go crazy. We had Steff go crazy for us,
and we didn't even get to talk about that because
of this gambling BS and that was the only downer.
But other than that, it's been fantastic.

Speaker 2 (35:51):
Now. I know you guys talked a little bit about it.
But what bothers you the most about this investigation, whether
it's the poker games or prop bets or you know,
did anything stand out that would would alarm you? A
little bit more being a former player now an analyst.

Speaker 4 (36:10):
Well, it all alarms me first and foremost. Number one,
if you're rigging poker games, especially some of the guys
are your friends, that's a bad thing. But obviously when
players are out here points shaving basically what it is.
You know, you can come up with prop bets or
gamble that lesson. Man, if you're out here shaving points,
that's just bad. You know, we've all then, we've all

(36:32):
been so blessed to make We make more money in
one month than most people are gonna make the entire lifetime.
And all you got to do is play basketball. You
we're the luckiest people in the world. I say this
about sports man. I love sports, but we are so
lucky and blessed. We get to do something so stupid

(36:55):
and we make more money. Think about Dan, We most
of us get paid back. Then you get paid twice
a month, and you make more money during that period
than most people are gonna make in their lifetime. The
mone of these guys are making today and to do
something hopefully, like I said, I'm hoping all these allegations
are not true. But if you did something that's stupid,

(37:18):
it's just it's just it's just stupid playing and simple.

Speaker 2 (37:20):
Do you get in these poker games that are held
outside of a casino.

Speaker 4 (37:26):
I'm not a poker guy. First of all, I would
never gamble at somebody house. I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 6 (37:30):
Okay, I'm not.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
Gonna Charles froze up there, yeah gear me, yeah, now, yeah,
you froze up again.

Speaker 6 (37:37):
Yeah. I don't.

Speaker 4 (37:38):
I don't believe in gambling at people houses. And I
and I I don't go to casino. I love you know,
you know, I gamble a lot, but I don't play poker. Uh,
but no, I don't go to people house and gamble.
Dan and nobody's coming to my house to gamble either.

Speaker 2 (37:52):
Talking to Charles Barkley NBA on ESPN, I almost said, TNT, it's.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
Been Weirdie Ernie screwed it.

Speaker 6 (38:02):
He said he only did.

Speaker 5 (38:03):
It one time.

Speaker 4 (38:04):
Yeah, I knew that was going to happen, but he
only did it one time in three shows, So it's
been pretty good.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
If Austin Reeves was the let's say that Luca and
Lebron weren't on the Lakers and it was Austin Reeves team.
Are these numbers sustainable for a player.

Speaker 6 (38:22):
Like that, impossible because he could.

Speaker 2 (38:27):
Get froze up again. Yeah, he froze up a couple
of times there. All right, let me take a break.
We'll come back with Charles Barklay after this. When I
last spoke to you, I asked if Austin Reeves could
he be the number one guy? Could he put up
these numbers on a team?

Speaker 6 (38:46):
No, because they're going to make adjustments.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
He froze up again.

Speaker 6 (38:53):
That's crazy, isn't it, Dan?

Speaker 2 (38:54):
Yeah, Okay, you're good now.

Speaker 6 (38:57):
Yeah, teams are going to start making adjustments.

Speaker 4 (39:00):
His forty gonna come down to twenty five or more,
you know, because I don't think he's that type of
guy who's gonna get forty a knight. Like now, he's
got like a triple yellow caution, like can shoot anytime
he wants to. But as teams are adjust they're gonna
make adjustments on him. He's a really good player. But
also to go out there and get forty to night

(39:22):
is really hard. I mean, well, because nobody's ever done it.
I mean, I mean, nobody's ever averaged forty points in
the NBA other than probably Will Chamberlain back in the day.
But teams are gonna make adjustment to make him pass
the ball more, which.

Speaker 6 (39:35):
He's comfortable with. But he's the health of a player.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
Is there any basketball player's future you would trade for
Victor wimbin Yama's future.

Speaker 4 (39:45):
Well, the only question about Victory's health, there's never I mean,
there's never been a question about him playing. It's just
can he stay healthy? You know these guys who have
these very unique bodies, I mean, and he probably got
the most unique body we've ever seen in the NBA
other than Shaquille. Like Shaquille when me and Kevin McHale

(40:08):
talk about it, when the first time we saw Shaquille O'Neill,
we couldn't believe how big and athletic he was. He's
probably and I met Will but I never got to
see him play. But Shaquille had the most unique body
I've ever seen in the NBA because how big and
strong and fast than he was. But Victor's different because
you look at minut Bowl, Jeorge Morrison, Mark Eden, guys

(40:31):
who are like seven three seventy four, they didn't have
this type of athletic ability. They couldn't shoot threes and
dribbling things like that. So He's probably the most unique
player we've had in the NBA, and we never had
anything like him.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
If Ralph Samson was playing today, Ralph Samson could be
maybe a Winbin Yama kind of player.

Speaker 6 (40:54):
Yeah, but Ralph never had the dribbling skills.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
Well, they didn't let him. Now they're saying to do
a big guy you, we want you to handle the ball,
shoot the threes.

Speaker 6 (41:04):
First of all, my note, I forgot the todd Why.

Speaker 2 (41:08):
Don't we see if we get Charles just on the
phone here because I don't frozen. No, there you are again.
Let me try it one more time and then if not,
well I'll just we'll try another another day.

Speaker 4 (41:21):
So if raph Sampson played in the NBA today, would
he be compared with the Victor only if he was
able to dribble and shoot threes like Victor does. But
Victor is the most unique player we've had in the
NBA since your kiel.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
Can you see where Steph Curry would be the second
option on the Warriors a couple of years from now
that that would extend his career, but he might not
be the number one guy.

Speaker 4 (41:49):
Well, they would have to bring in a big time
free agent. I think right now, they're stuck with the
team they have. The only question is Victor Kaminga.

Speaker 2 (41:59):
Is that his name, Victor Jonathan Kaminga.

Speaker 6 (42:01):
Jonathan Cominga? Excuse me?

Speaker 4 (42:03):
So he's the only he's the wild card because we've
seen how far that team can go with Draymond and
Jeremy Butler their first round team. The only question is
can Jonathan Kaminga take the next step? Because in the West,
you're gonna have to be OKC, you're gonna have to
be Houston, You're gonna have to beat the joker. So

(42:25):
can he grow enough to get them past the second
round of the playoffs. That's the only question with the
Warriors because Steph is clearly he's on the down side
of his career. You can't expect him to play like
he did that game last week in June. I mean,
that's just physically impossible because everybody's fresh right now, Dan,
everybody's fresh.

Speaker 6 (42:47):
But you can't expect a.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
Thirty seven year old to go to November, December, January
averaging thirty five points a game. That's just not gonna
happen and get through three or four rounds in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (42:58):
Michael Jordan in his interview with Mike Tariko was talking
about load management. Back in the day, you guys took
great pride in playing every single game. Uh, what do
you how do you think today's player will react to
what Michael Jordan said about load management?

Speaker 4 (43:15):
Well, first of all, we don't care what they think. Dan,
men and you have discussed loads of manager on this
show for years. It sucks load management. These guys can
play basketball two days in a row. We played basketball
two days in row. They got better equipment. They got
they got better equipment, they got better medicals, they got

(43:37):
cold plunges, they got hyperbaric chambers, they got private planes. Now,
if we can play back to back games and Chuck
Taylor's and things like that and fly commercial.

Speaker 6 (43:50):
I flew commercial my first four years in the NBA.

Speaker 4 (43:53):
We didn't have ice plunge, we had ice ice bags,
we didn't have hyperbarrack chambers. So if we could do
that for two million dollars a year, they damn sure
can do it for forty million dollars a year. And Dan,
we said it before. It's interesting how it took up
a life of its own because it was Michael Jordan.

(44:14):
You asked me last time I can't remember. I love
doing your show. First of all, I must love doing
your damn show. You make me get up, and damn
six o'clock in the morning, I want to kick you
in taz ass. I just want you to know that
it's six o'clock in the morning. But you asked me
what was a bigger problem in the NBA. All the
threes are load management, and I said to you, quite

(44:36):
as load management, it said. When Michael says that, it's
like just turning into a wildfire. It's been a problem
for years. And let me tell you some Dan, it's
gonna really be a problem going forward because we got
guys making seventy million dollars a year, God bless them.
That's just on them. But when we start having guys
making eighty ninety one hundred million dollars a year and they, yeah,

(45:00):
I played last night, I can't play tomorrow. We can't
just keep crapping on the fans saying that that that's
just disrespectful. Number one is disrespectful to the game, But
it's really disrespectful to the fan base. If I saved
up all my money expensive as tickets are, some of
these star is only gonna come to East Coast, West

(45:21):
coast one time a year, and you're making ninety million
dollars and you can't play basketball two years, two days
in a row.

Speaker 6 (45:29):
That's one hundred wrong.

Speaker 2 (45:32):
I agree with you. I said the same thing. My
reaction to Jordan was, this is obvious. Of course he's
going to be against load management, and it makes his reputation,
you know, stand even taller because he didn't take games off.
He tried to play in every single game, so there
wasn't any news in this. And you're right if Mike

(45:52):
says it, all of a sudden, load management's a topic again.
And I'm like, these guys today don't care. They don't
care what Michael Jordan says about all. I'm gonna play
every game now because Mike said so well.

Speaker 4 (46:06):
And the thing that bothers me, I wish they would
tell the truth instead of just saying you hear people
saying well, it's not healthy or things like that. Just
say I want it and listen, this is a fair thing.
On their point, if I'm able to play basketball two
or three more years, I'm probably gonna make an extra
fifty to one hundred million dollars.

Speaker 6 (46:28):
I mean, depending on who you are.

Speaker 4 (46:30):
Even if you like I say, if you're a star
who like, if you play an extra three years, you're
gonna make a minimum of probably one hundred million dollars. Dan,
if you can add three years at the end of
your career, you're probably gonna be making thirty to fifty
sixty million dollars. And I understand that, But just say, Hey,

(46:52):
I'm trying to extend my career. Don't just tell don't
try to tell me it's not healthy. I've seen reports
out there saying it's not healthy to player, dude, But
for guys that played basketball back to back their entire life.

Speaker 2 (47:07):
Yeah, I'm with you, and I understand this because if
you said to Larry Bird, hey, why don't you do
load management? You might be able to extend your career
three more years. Or I said that to Steve Nash,
you know, would they do load management if they knew
I got a chance to play a few more years here?

Speaker 6 (47:26):
And I understand that argument.

Speaker 4 (47:28):
But what Michael said, Man, these people are only gonna
get to see the great ones every now and then.
Like Michael Jordan, Carl Malone was only gonna come to
Philly one time a year, he's only going to go
to New York one time a year. Maggie Johnes has

(47:50):
only coming to Philly one time a year.

Speaker 6 (47:53):
That's not fair.

Speaker 4 (47:56):
Like, Yo, you got to play in New York, you
gotta Can you imagine in the day if Magic Johnson
had a said, Hey, we played, I'm gonna pick some
crap and okay, I shouldn't say that.

Speaker 6 (48:06):
I know I'm gonna get in trouble.

Speaker 4 (48:09):
Can you imagine if Magic Johnson said we played, I
played in Brooklyn last night.

Speaker 6 (48:17):
I'm not gonna play against the Celtics the next day.
Can you can.

Speaker 4 (48:21):
You just think about how stupid that sounds. I played
in Indiana and I apologize to Brooklyn. Now we played
at the Pacers last night. I'm not gonna play against
the Celtics tonight.

Speaker 6 (48:34):
Can you can? Can you imagine? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (48:38):
Can you imagine if Larry Bird said, Hey, we played
the Clippers last night. I'm gonna sit out this Lakers
game tomorrow. Can you imagine how that's stupid that sounds?

Speaker 2 (48:49):
Uh, you won the MVP in nineteen ninety three. Yes,
if I said you could trade in the MVP but
the Suns win the championship.

Speaker 4 (49:01):
Yeah, I would rather win the championship. But you know,
nobody can take away what I accomplished that year.

Speaker 2 (49:08):
You know the reason why I bring it up. Cam
Newton said that he would rather win the NFL MVP,
like he wouldn't trade his MVP for a Super Bowl win.

Speaker 4 (49:20):
Well, well, we all have our thing, Like I wanted
to win a championship for the people of Phoenix. That
I've said, that's my only regret not winning the championship
in Phoenix, because you know, this is where I live.
These people have always treated me amazing, Like Philip, that's
no disrespect to Philly, but they've already won a championship.

(49:43):
That's my only regret in my career is not winning
a championship for the Phoenix SUNNS fans. But yo, man,
that year I was the best basketball player in the world.
We had the best record in the world. I like
these That's the one thing that annoys me about ESP
and I'm not gonna lie there. They have this stupid
argument every year about the MVP that Michael should have
won more, or or Lebron should have won more. It's

(50:06):
not who's the best player, it's the person who had
the best year. It's like because let me use an analogy.
You're trying to tell me. When Magic and Bird were
going back and forth on MVPs, one of them was
better than the other. Note is whoever had the best
regular season. But now guys like to start like Lebron
should have won, Like David Rose was the best player

(50:28):
in the world.

Speaker 6 (50:28):
That year he won MVP, the.

Speaker 4 (50:30):
Chicago Bulls had the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Uh the years Karl Malone won the MVP, the Utah
Jazz had the best record in the NBA. Like Jack
Chack always gets annoy that Steve Nash, well, Steve Nash
as good as Shaul Quill. No, but the Phoenix Suns
had the best record in the NBA both years he

(50:53):
won MVP. I don't think Steve Nash would Steve when
nas to tell you, No, I was not better than
Kobe Bryant, but those two years I had a better
regular season.

Speaker 6 (51:02):
It's a regular season award.

Speaker 2 (51:05):
Did you think you were better than Jordan? Not having
just a better year than Jordan in ninety three, but
you were better than Jordan.

Speaker 4 (51:12):
I did not realize that I was not as good
as Michael Jordan, so I played him in the Finals,
because when I got traded to Phoenix, I told the guys,
we're going to the finals and we're gonna play the Bulls.
That's the first thing I told them when I got
traded the Phoenix, and I said, the only reason Michael
Jordan I felt like it was just as good, I said,
the only reason he's better. He got Scotti, Pippen, Dennis,
Robin Harrs, Grant, guys like that, Packson, BJ had a

(51:36):
hell of a team, I said, But now I got
Kevin Johnson, Dan Marley said to borows Mark West. And
it wasn't until after Game two that I realized that
he was better than me because I had fifty he
had fifty five. I told the guys, we're gonna win tonight.
We're gonna win the game tonight, and I did. I had.
I think I had forty seven, to be exact, but

(51:57):
he had like fifty two. That was the first time
because like even when I played against Magic and Barry,
I'm like, I'm just as good as these guys. But
they got James Worthy and Kareem and Barry McHale in
Paris and Dennis Johnson. But I don't think any great
player I think Carl Malone thinks he's the greatest. I
think Patrick Ewing, I think all you can't be a

(52:20):
great player unless you think you betting everybody else, because
you have to have supreme confidence. But like then, there's
a lot of guys who are delusional. They're just good,
just alright, good player. They think they're beat and they are.
But there's no great player. There's no Hall of Fame
type player who don't think he's the best player out

(52:40):
there every night.

Speaker 2 (52:42):
Lebron's not out there. You said that he's got an
old guy injury.

Speaker 4 (52:46):
He's just old. Everybody gets old. Yeah, he says a
side attica. You know what that means. Yeah, I know.

Speaker 6 (52:54):
It's back hurt. All old people back hurt. Then all
old people back hurt.

Speaker 4 (53:00):
You can you can dress it up like a sciatica.
You can come up with all these medical terms. Lebrun
is old.

Speaker 2 (53:09):
Ah, your froze up again. Thank you, Charles. We'll talk
to you soon, all right, man, have a great one, okay.
