Speaker 1 (00:00):
This Gentleman Being podcast. Hey that's us, brought to you
by Hello Fresh, the Experts and Tastes that kiwis love
and Sandy very lovely to meet you. Thanks for coming
all the way to see us. Well not I know
you haven't come just to see us, but it's great
to have you in New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Well, thanks for having me. I've never been here before.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
I thought you'd come just to see us.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
I told John.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Lovely to have you here. Now you've been doing this
gig for over thirty years.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Long time. It's a great journeys.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Stressful job. I imagine captaining a huge ship.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah you know, well you know there's perks and there's stress.
It comes with any job, right.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Because I wanted to know, like we knew because we
all watch We love watching the show, but when like
how much do you see or do you know what's
going on? Until the show maybe comes out, you're like, oh,
the crew were doing what.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yes all the time, Like when the viewers see it,
I see it for the first time. They're always on
their best behavior with me.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, right, and then do you reprimand them on the
show goes to it? No, No, what's under the bridge?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
That's right, that's you know, they got to live with
it now.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
You kept in the vocal the Wellington, Yeah, I did did,
because we were Wellington here in New Zealand. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Really, yeah. You know they changed the name for the show.
It was the Wellesley.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
What they changed the name so no one knew what
the boat was security reasons.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
I don't know about security, but sometimes they just change
the name. No, the owner wants it changed, but it's
not for security, just for the bad behavior that's on board.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Ah yeah right. And so you would get very affluent
guests on board, I imagine, do any of them have
what's the wildest demand a guest has ever had?
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Well, they're not. I don't know. In my opinion, when
you're paying that kind of money, there's no wild demand.
It's just a request that it's an expectation that we
should be able to provide. Unless you know, we've had
people want us to fly truffles in from Paris, fresh truffles.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
So did the truffles get flown in?
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Of course they have the money, the budget. We're like, sure, no.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Problem, she's really gonna want treffles.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Don't you read like fresh lobster or fresh you know,
but the wild requests are not They're attainable most often
times if they have the budget for it.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
There's nothing that show money come by flying a helicopter
to pick up a couple of traffles doesn't rettle you.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
No, I mean, because that's part of the business, isn't it.
So that's what they're used to. That doesn't really happen
since you know, that's kind of cost.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Of living crisis.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
You can't fuel prices, not every.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Day, once a week maybe like that because like as
glamorous in people's minds when you're working on the boat,
as it would be.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Of course, but there is like I was just sharing,
when you see us drop the tender in the water
and people go, oh my god, your job is so cool.
We get to see all these places. We take the
guests ashore and come back to the boat. The only
way we see the shore line is if we do
garbage runs. So we all like, I'll do the garbage run.
Why were you gone for three hours? But we go
(03:03):
in so the guests go to lunch, like you know,
before below deck I would say everybody in the water,
we'd play with the toys, and after we would you know, dock.
But because usually you stay around where you're you depart from,
you go explore.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Do you find when you come to New Zealand and
we say below dick, But does it have different to you?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
You know, I've had a lot of Kiwi crew over
the years.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
You've got used to them saying Dick, but right, And.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Like all nationalities, everybody has their thing and you learn
to train your ear and say wait a minute. So
and I've learned a lot like.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Is there anything in particular you know about Kiwi stuff?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Just Asia series? Yeah, so know just how much she
loves it here, that this is her base and she's
never going to leave it, which I love. Which is
such a beautiful representation of a country. So many people
that do the show don't want to live in their
country and they want to move wherever, but Asia comes
(04:08):
back here to live. So that speaks volumes about the
quality of life here.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
This is a beautiful country. Okay, what's the worst nationalisty?
Sandals with us from below dick? Dick is with us?
If pirates if you've come across cut across.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Really a few times like yeah, you know, pirates are
thieves at sea. So between Cuban and Haiti. We were
chased by pirates. That's called windward passage because they came
from Haiti and we tow very expensive boats and they're
just going for the boat. Now in the Red Sea,
there was a threat of pirates. When I had a
fire in the Red Sea, we had security on board
(04:46):
and he goes, uh, the pirates also heard your call
for help. So let's see who gets here first. You
have to really tell me that who did get there first?
Speaker 3 (04:56):
The warship, Oh, thankfully, And next stations when pirates are
on the way, like what what's the what do you do?
Speaker 2 (05:04):
We train, We have training, we know what to do,
like you know, we're taught how to how to deal
with pirates. We don't have guns, you know, we don't
carry guns on board. We have fire hoses, we have
other means to keep them off.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
And so because they generally come along like a little
dingy with a motor on the back of it.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
With these we have a lot of fire hoses.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Like when they actually do get to the boat, like
how do they climb up.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
These suction cups? But a lot of boats put bob
wire around, just like you know, around their boats.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Before you go because so nice to have you there.
The people say the term mouth like a sailor sometimes
means you know, I swear words, which I'm sure it
doesn't happen too much. Well, what we've done is we've
beat the word from some of your interviews you've done
in the past. I want to see if you can
work out the word that you've said. Okay, of course
we're on some firstly, some amazing up like a seiler,
some amazing show. Well these are not sweet words, okay,
(06:03):
but this first one comes from Ellen DeGeneres.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Now, before we play this, did Ellen bully you when she.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Was a huge fan of yours? And I think she
starts by talking about it. Her and Porsche watched the
show all the time.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
Have listen, Captain Fanny, it's so nice to meet you.
I just we're portion and I are huge fans and
we watch every week. Like I said, where are you
right now? You're on a boat that's right.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
In the middle of the Mediterranean and I'm a huge
fan of Okay, yours, Yeah, yours, well done.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Okay, let's go to the next one. This was a
UK show, huge UK show called This Morning, a breakfast
time show on TV.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Were you worried about taking part in it in the
first place, because it's quite a secret industry, isn't it. Oh, yes,
it's very What Bravo has done for our industry has
en it up, yeah, and has showed people, hey, you
can get a job in the maritime industry. There are
careers for people.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
So what have they done?
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Well, they's something it up.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Incredible, No blowing it up. They're blowing it up.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
That's what you've seen. They're blowing it up and a
good way.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
And finally this was Watch What Happens Live, a great show,
Andy Cohen, you were on.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Seeing the dinner that resulted in Lexi's firing.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Who do you think Chuck Lower blows Matt or Lexi?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I mean, Matt was an active participate in that.
Speaker 4 (07:16):

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Matt's a he's good at the bear. And you know
you're seeing the dinner that resulted in Lexi's firing.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Who do you think Chuck Lower blows.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Matt or Lexi?
Speaker 2 (07:33):
I mean, Matt was an active participant in that. Matt
poked the bear.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
I'm thankful you said we had to clean it up
for mett streets credibility.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
I wanted to kick him on his other knee.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
He kept in Sandy. Lovely to meet you. We could
talk to you all day, but you've probably got other stuff,
so I thought you're just coming to see us. So
