Speaker 1 (00:01):
With the Johnoyan Ben Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Cheers to Dilma making the world a bitter tea famous.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Good morning and congratulations.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Thank you thanks for having me on. Guys.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Oh it's great to talk to you.
Speaker 4 (00:12):
You're on your way to the closing ceremony right now,
is that right?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yes, yep, yep, doing a little multitaska.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Who's surrounded you at the moment? Who's beside you?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
How we got we got David Liddy? Oh yeah, we've
got a couple of couple of pole volters. Yeah, we've
got a few support stars, mostly athletics team and yeah,
obviously Finn and a couple of sailors as well at
the top.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
So, so, has everyone been here the whole time or
people have come and gone or.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
I think they're kind of coming gone, Like obviously Team
Sports have kind of left now, I think, and then
we actually came in quite late, just as Athletics is
in the second week. But yeah, I think I think
the swarmers have kind of stayed on. Looks like they've
been having a good time. But yeah, I think I
think for the most part everyone sort of stayed.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Around classic swimmers, classic swimmers always wanting a good times.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
It has it sunk again.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
I mean, a gold medal on the world's biggest stage
at the Olympics in the high jump.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Has it sunk in for you?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Oh no, no, it hasn't. I mean, look, I mean
I'm obviously amazingly stoked with two did and I'm over
the moon with my result last night. But I think
it's going to take a few few weeks to process
what actually truly happened. But yeah, all I know is
that I was just so stoked to be there and
it was just so much fun being out.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
There in the moment it was it And you know,
you guys, you could have you could have shared gold.
You're in the USA competed it, but you guys decided
to go for a jump off that seemed like a
bit of a risk at the time.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
It's still I guess you're back in it now.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, yeah, no, definitely paid off, I think, know, to
be fair, like, obviously the boys shared the gold in Tokyo, uh,
and that was something that was so amazing, and you know,
it was such an amazing part of Olympic castory. But
I think at the same time, you know, as as
we're competitors and as we all want to win. I
think that you know, all the all the athletes decided
(02:02):
that it would be cool if we did get the
opportunity to to actually see what would happen and play
out the jump off. So yeah, I had no doubt
in my mind when when I knew that was gonna happen,
that we both agree to it and get on with it.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
When when you have the conversation, you're like, is it
a jump off? He's like, you had to jump off
to jump off, it's agreed to jump off.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
That sounds pretty cool. That's better.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Definitely, we definitely could have drawn out the suspense a
wee bit more. It was pretty much more like me
just looking at him, going let's jump.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Let's cats jump. It's a good care trace. There was
one there was one moment and you kind of went viral.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
There was there was one moment that you sort of
came up and you sort of you sort of jumped
straight onto the mat under the bar, and you kind
of went viral as well. People were saying online it
was like you were playing like PlayStation and the controller
died or something like that. What actually happened there was
it just you just didn't feel it. And then you
decided to bow out.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, yeah, look, I think I was just pushing a
little bit hard in the first a couple of steps
of my run up, So you usually can kind of
tell mid curve whether you're in a good position or not,
and every so often those kinds of jumps come out.
But yeah, it is quite funny to see the memes
going around with the old the old failed jump. I'm
not sure a lot of the people commenting on them
as well realize that I actually got the one. So
(03:18):
it would be nice if we could try and sort
of push that as well.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
You want us to sway the comments section, do you?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
But not only did his controller die, but it actually
turned it back on and yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Exactly, Well, at least you're not a breakdancer for Australia.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
I mean, like.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Hamish cool with us this morning, what is it like?
I mean, you have been training probably longer than four
years for this, But let's just take this four year
period leading into the Olympics and then you finally stand
on that podium the national anthems playing, talk us through
that moment.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, I think you know, it's just it's just confirmation
that all the sacrifice and hard work starting pay off.
I think that that's what's what's so cool is you know,
I've worked so hard for this. I've you know, I've
I've put some some pretty hard conversations with some some
you know, loved ones. You know, I've had to do that.
I've had to change around my coaching team. I've had
(04:09):
to you know, change some technical stuff and really look
at myself and be honest with that's what my what
I am capable of doing. And so I think that
you know, to to know that I've done all that
hard stuff and then you know, get such an amazing
result from it. It's just it's just during come true.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Well, because you're my wife went to a breakfast that
you spoke at and and you did say that you
had to change the team around you, like your your
dietitian and your coach.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
You even setting up formal meetings. I think, you know, see,
everyone was held accountable.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
It was like take someone's saying in the minutes and
things like that.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah. Yeah, look, I mean I think that's just you know,
it's just increased professionalism. And I think that's the thing
is I I love the sport and I definitely see
it as something that I love and have a lot
of fun doing, but it's also it's also a job,
and it's also something that I want to make sure
I'm doing the best at. So I think that in
the last couple of years, I've really had to look
at myself and and how I've sort of worked and
probably been a little bit casual at times. And so
(05:02):
it was just around about just just being really really
conscious on being as professional as possible and getting the
right result from that.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Is anyone going to lose their job now you've got
the gold? Oh Dietes, mate, you've been dragging the chain?
Anyone like that.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, we haven't had that conversation yet. That's more of
a post Deech thing. But now don't tell anyone. I
think they're probably pretty safe. They want to do it again,
it's probably more up to the end, to be honest.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Loop us in on the minutes and it was incredible.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah, so many great moments, but I managed a big
part of the Olympics have been incredible. I mean there
was that moment where the freach pole Volda has sort
of bits and pieces hit the pole and knocked it off.
Were ever worried about that could be an option for
you and the high jump that your your you're junk
could actually knock off the bar.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, we go over backwards. So not really an interest
for me, unless unless I've got it. You know, I'm
doing really really well for myself.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
We ever tail or something.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
In the closing ceremony, which you're you're just walking into. Now,
what are we looking forward to? We had that that
unusual gentleman painted like an Avatar character with his goolies
out in the opening ceremony.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
What can we expect?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, well, I mean hopefully not too much more religious slander,
but we will see. I think, yeah, I think. I
think the big rumor around us as who's going to
be performing. It seems like it's potentially Snoop Dogg he
is in town. But but yeah, also maybe Taylor Swift.
There's there's just so many people saying so many different things.
So wow, go out there and actually see who's out there.
(06:30):
But yeah, we'll see.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
So it's a genuine surprise. No one knows.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, I don't know. To be fair, I probably haven't
been painted too much kinch last week for hours. We
will see.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Pretty sure someone would know someone someone is to know.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
I think the person performing probably knows. Yeah, the good hope.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
I was so good to jet. Yeah, we're New Zealand
is so proud. It was such an effic moment. It's
been such an epic game. So congratulations Jesus.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, thanks, it's been awesome to have New zeal On
behind us as well.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Can I just say too, we've called join your number
here in your profile picture, is you playing golf? Do
you think?
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Do you think you might want to change that?
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Mate?
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Got to keep it casual, okay, yeah, maybe you high
jumping or something.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
I don't know, just part time high jumper, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Also, if you google yourself in the last twenty four hours,
but if you google yourself, it comes up with a
little gold medal emblem as well, and you can click.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
On it years. Actually yeah, Seamus plug, I did actually
google myself.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Yeah, you'd better be googling yourself, mate, What a day
to be googling yourself Aimus.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Congratulations, so proud.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
You deserve all the success and I hope you enjoyed
the rest period too.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Mate.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
