Speaker 1 (00:00):
We have a number of SAMO files for you this
hour that I think you will enjoy. That SAMO file.
I'm sorry, I don't know what that word means, but
it's spelled psa mm mm wow o phili as the
winning word from the scripts National Spelling Bee last night,
won by a kid. I'm looking up what the TV
appears to be an Indian American child shocking. That's surprising, right,

(00:24):
And I only bring that up because, yeah, culture of
various groups matters to education outcome. So you can say
out loud that clearly Indian Americans or Asian Americans studying harder,
doing better. But if any other group, including white kids,
are doing less, nobody ever says because you don't try

(00:45):
hard enough, It's got to be something else. So here's
a question for you, Jack. Do you think you Jack
Armstrong of the Radio, are or are not a SAMO file.
Let me look at the word of the way it's
spelled again, trying to come up with a root word
out of there.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
M psamm oh file.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
It seems like too many ms.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I know it.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
I think I am soon unnaturally attracted to something salmon.
I think I am a samophile, and probably so well.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Then you're well, is that included in one of the
LGBTQP for SAMO files. No, it's an organism that prefers
or thrives in sandy soils or areas.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Ah, so that'd be like what a crab or something. Now,
we talk about this every year, and I don't want
to be mocking hard work and achievement, but it's it's
just a dumb trivia contest memorizing how to spell words
nobody is ever going to use ever in a million years,
and if you ever do need to use it, you'll
look it up. It's just I wouldn't want my kids

(01:53):
to spend their time doing that.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Right, It's like memorizing I don't know the names of
towns in foreign countries. Name the town just east of
Blacksburg in southern Austria. Uh, Witchstein, that's right. The hell
look at a map? Kid?

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah, watch Spellbound, the documentary. I say it is every
year or too about what it's like for those kids.
Does it look like what you want your kid to do?
And I kid up there, God, I'm sure he's going
to be successful.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
But wow, well, we have a lot of stuff to squeeze.
In the final hour, of the week. But first let's
turn our gaze to the rear view mirror.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
I'm just happy that a semophile didn't turn out to
be somebody sexually attracted to piglets or something.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Let's see what was I saying. Ah, Yes, let's take
a fin look back of the week. That was it's
cow clips of the week. Ron. We are barreling towards
unlimited debt in this country.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
This is fabulous.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
I'm Ron de Santis, cold as pandit I'm retired to
There were two doors. They both led to hell.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
We chose the one that was least bad.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Come on back to San Francisco, where he's like less
likely to be victimized. Yeah, white women are one of
the most dangerous groups in the United States and abroad
that you know. It's not fair to my kids or
yours to see a dead body on the side of
the road as we try to leave the house for

(03:29):
hot cocoa. It seems irresponsible to throw someone back out
into the street who has just committed a violent felony.
The migrants being in those hotels have destroyed them. There's
a lot of alcohol in these rooms. Housekeeping is there
all week.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
We will be forced to sell these goats to slaughter
and to the option yards, and we'll be forced out
of business and probably file for bankrupts. Fifteen months into
the war and Russia still striking terror in the hearts
of locals. Moscow hit by a squadron of eight drones.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
An advisor to President Zelenski said, they were watching with pleasure.
We don't tell them where to strike, we don't tell
them we're not to strike. Not one Republican should vote
for this deal.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
It is a bad deal, one of the sides, so
to speak. I would like to see with this sandwich.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
I had no idea that we would see a plan
as ephemeral and as malodorous as this plan.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
I thought it would be hard.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
I thought it'd be almost impossible. There's going to be
a reckoning about what just occurred.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
You know, it's not a victory, it's a surrender, but
it grooves the ball in our direction. I'm Rand de Santis.
Everyone knows my husband, Rond de Santis. I'm Rond de Santis,
Ron de Santis.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
By the way, I with who those guys that fly
over shortly?

Speaker 1 (05:02):
You heard them having three of the more women. That's
when he stumbled and went down, landing on his right hip.
He pointed at something that had caused him to trip, but.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
I said, I'm not falling.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
There's no way, so I'd go tiptoe down the thing
that was a mistake, Ye dude. It sogging them back,
but they tugging in your kids.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
They don't even need to ask because you love what

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
