Speaker 1 (00:00):
China and Cuba have reached a secret agreement that our
spooks obviously got wind of for China to establish an
electronic eavesdropping facility on Cuba in what's being described as
a brash new geopolitical challenge by Beijing to the US.
According to US officials familiar with highly classified intelligence, but Cuba,

(00:21):
as most people realize, about ninety miles off of Florida.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
China has given Cuba a whole bunch of money for this.
But Jonah Goldberg said part of the agreement was they
have to change their name to spy Balloon Island.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
That is funny and wildly inappropriate. There's no matter for joking, Jonah.
Officials familiar with the matter said China agreed to pay
cash strapped Cuba several billion dollars to allow it to
build the eavesdropping station. Wow, I could scoop up electronic
communications throughout the southeastern US where many military bases are located,
and monitor US ship traffic as well.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
So I don't know how far can they reach with
whatever the most technology is there. I mean, you're only
seventy miles from Florida, but you're a lot further from Washington.
D c or where else.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yeah, well, they cite the southeastern US specifically in this
Wall Street Journal piece. They don't explain why, but obviously
there are some limits. I guess. Obviously the Biden administration
is concerned because it's right next to us and incredibly
bold for China to build this station on Cuba. I'd
so far the statements from the government or we're monitoring it.

(01:31):
We remain confident we can meet our security commitments. Blah
blah blah.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
China is not interested in coming off as too provocative,
are they No?

Speaker 1 (01:43):
No, indeed they're big on saying this is escalatory, as
they escalate every damn day. It's been you know, as
a guy into political science, has been so interesting to
watch a country go from pretending to be a friend
to saying, okay, that jig's up. Here are true colors,
and their true colors are extremely aggressive.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
I feel like if you had a president with a big,
thick tom Selig mustache, they wouldn't do this. Boy, just
when you thought it was over, folks.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Oh, one more China note, if I may, exports and
imports both fell in May in some economic numbers that
most of the world are. You know, most normal folks
are ignoring, but among the movers and shakers in global economics,
they're really concerned that China's post reopening recovery is sputtering

(02:35):
in that global trade activity is cooling rapidly
