What are the dos and don'ts of using home security cameras? Apparently you should disclose their location to guests and let them know they're on camera. Awkward.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
I thought this was interesting from the WAPO. We've posted
a link under hot links at Armstrong and getty dot
com the dos and don'ts of using home security cameras
that see everything. And it's a little long and a
little technical. It's the sort of thing you ought to
just keep around. But print that out and keep it
or whatever, and certainly go with simply safe for your
home security simply safe dot com slash Armstrong. But they

(00:20):
talk about how hackable systems can be, and how you
need to be careful where you put your cameras because
they're so hackable, and how to use encryption and change
the default passwords and set up a separate why find network.
It's all sorts of really good advice. So anyway, that said,
Armstrong and getty dot com.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
What do they mean by need to be concerned about
where you put your cameras? Is that the walking around
naked concern? Yeah, and if you want to see me naked,
knock yourself out, it's not gonna be what you were
hoping for.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
But talking about positioning it so you know it doesn't
catch bathrooms, for instance, or into your kid's room because room,
you're really a weirdo yeah, you really are, but some
people don't think about that. Are into your kid's room
is not good because hackers are big into blackmailing kids.
If they see the kids doing something, the kid would
be embarrassed to be seen that, they'll blackmail the kids.

(01:16):
Kids have committed suicide over this.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Oh ah, I just just s popped into my head.
How many parents have put cameras in their kid's bedrooms.
So it's more of a keeping an eye on my
kids than it is keeping an eye on crime. You know,
the old mannycam that right was a thing for a while.
Do people do that? I haven't done that, but is
that a common thing? Do you know?

Speaker 1 (01:36):
I don't know. I don't know. I'd imagine it happens.
Of course it happens.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Be super easy now for me to have a camera
in the corner of both my kids' bedrooms running constantly,
and if I get a question about some I could
go back and roll through the tape.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
I'm not going to tell anybody how to raise their kids.
But unless you have like a serious problem with they've
been arrested a couple of times, or there's a serious
substance of you is problem. Oh that's a bad way
to go. I wonder if it's a bad way to be.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
I wonder if it's the future. Though, as we get
no more and more on all the time.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
No, I reject that I rejected, and I reject you
even asking the question.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
That's a quick question. You reject the question. So is
that the opposite of I take your question. Uh, yes,
that is exactly I reject your question. Okay, that's a
question of an ask
