I had no idea that this was cought thing. Oh
my god. Yeah, if you've been caught or anything like that,
we always, you know, can talk to you in a
voice described disguiser, sorry disguiser as well if you if
you would like to do that eight hundred four O

want to talk to you if you were a secret shopper.
Actually you worked at where I worked off.

Pay less but after payless.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Uh. One of my friends who worked there with me,
she ended up leaving the pay lesson going next door
to J. C. Penney's because she was making more as
a secret shopper. And I'm like, well, what exactly is it?
Because I wasn't aware aware of what it was. And
she's like, dude, I literally just get paid to act
like I'm shopping around the store and.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I look for shoplifters. I was like, are you kidding me?
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Dude?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
What sign me up?
Speaker 5 (00:59):

Speaker 2 (00:59):
I got to do is walk around the store.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
You have to literally just make sure you're just you know,
looking through clothes. Maybe you're going in the dressing room
and trying on clothes and you're literally just looking for shoplifters.
And right now it's a holiday season, so people are
probably shoplifting more because they have to buy gifts. And
I just think that if I was in in radio,
i'd be a full time secret shopper.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Why wouldn't you be? It'd be so much fun. I know,
literally like, are your own detective. Yes, I can finally
feel like I purpose in life.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
And then when you catch them, you're like, yeah, I
did that.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
I did okay, maybe like searching through the coach and
I see him grabbing and then I come out of
the inside of one.
Speaker 6 (01:47):
Yeah, that's exactly what I like.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
I don't even shopp here no more.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Be a racket hats and they'd be pulling them off,
and they pulling off it's just by the top of
my head is right there, Oh my god, Hey, who's
this Alissa Alyssa?
Speaker 6 (02:06):
Are you a secret shopper?
Speaker 1 (02:09):
No?
Speaker 5 (02:10):
I actually was a couple of years ago, actually a
really long time ago. I was with a friend shopping
and I was like in the dressing room with her,
and I wasn't paying attention and she was stealing stuff
and I was like, all my phone, she was stealing
stuff and I had no idea. And I walked out
(02:32):
of the dressing room with her, and we walked out
of the of the store, and the lady like this
lady like ran after us, and then these police.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Like and the lady was in regular clothes though, right, No,
she looked like.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
A normal person. And I was crying hysterically because I
was so young and confused, and I'm like, what's going on?
And this lady basically was a secret shopper and we
in trouble actually got arrested and stuff.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah, so they can handcuff you.
Speaker 5 (03:05):
No, they call the police that were like nearby, and
they come and.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, you don't do anything, you just like yo.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
They still, She's going to go back in there with
her normal clothes on and look for other people stealing
the easiest thing.
Speaker 6 (03:19):
Well, hold on, how does that work? Are they done
for the day?
Speaker 2 (03:22):
No, I wasn't done for the day.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
If I was a thief, though, I would look for that.
I'd see who the secret shopper is.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
And I know people are still inside shopping unless you
know they.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Yeah, you don't know that they're there.
Speaker 6 (03:34):
Oh I would know, Oh I would know.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
And you're like, hey, I would put it around on
the criminal network, like, hey, this is the secret shopper
for Macy's. Although no, if anyone does that, especially in Macy's,
you should.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
You should be jailed in obey. You should not steal.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
Right bells and largo marm like, what are we doing?

Speaker 4 (04:08):
No, but I have been caught by them before. So
when I was younger, I was a little bit of
a klepto, and I got caught a couple of times
shop lifting. So one time I got caught at Walmart,
and like you said, it was just like a regular person.
I technically wasn't the one stealing. It was my egg.
Speaker 6 (04:30):
Toxic.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
And so I walked out the door. I was trying.
I thought he had already left, but he hadn't, And
so he caught me when I was walking out the
garden section, and he put his arm around me and
we walked out together, and this girl grabbed my arm
to stop me because it was a secret shopper, but
I didn't know who it was, so I punched her
and I took off front, and when you they did
(04:59):
because I I went back because they told him that
they wouldn't charge me if I brought him his his
ID and stuff. And they lied and as soon as
they walked in the door, I got arrested.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
No, dumb, how old are you because now I need
to know how old you were when this happened.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
I was like seventeen.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah you didn't, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
I learned.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah, when's wait, well, when's the last time you stopped stealing?
What's what's the last thing you stole? Because you said
you used to be a klepto? Yes, what all have
you stolen to?
Speaker 4 (05:27):
Yes? Well now I have a bunch of kids, so
I can't do it anymore.

The Burden
The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay.
