Eckhart Tolle discusses two of his key concepts which he calls the horizontal and the vertical. They could also be called the everyday and the transcendent. Eckhart describes the horizontal as the place of everyday life: our egos, identification with our thoughts and our personalities. The vertical he says is connected to the source of all life… which some also call God. He says it’s also where the transcendent dimension of us lives which is beyond space and time. Eckhart says the primary purpose of our lives is to become aware of the vertical. Eckhart says it’s our destiny to live with a foot in both worlds. When we embrace the vertical, we transform the horizontal.
