Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk Podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk z'b.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
T twenty World Cup. It started, it's underway and it
will start for the black Caps tomorrow. Jake Moorem, assistant
coach to the side it joins us. Now, welcome to
the show, Jake. Pressure is all on right from the
get go. Afghanistan are certainly no easy beats and it's
a team. Well you kind of need to. You need
to win against these guys, don't you.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, we do.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Yeah, I mean it's a tough start our first two games,
you know, two out of the four pool games, Afghanistan
and then the West Indies, so pretty much we've got
to be straight into our work.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
And you're right, Afghanistan will not be easy. I mean they.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Had I saw a stat the other day that they
had I think it was nine individuals, nine players at
the IPL this year. So they're not the team that
probably think they were or the thing they are from
years gone by. They've got some really quality world class
players and you think of their spinners, but it's also
their seamers and their betters now, so they're a sight
(01:11):
on the up and absolutely we are not taking it
lightly and we need to get that win.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Like you said that the nature of the draw, Jake,
you've got to beat one of these next two teams
with all due to speak to Papua New Guinea and Uganda,
you should have them in the bag. So one of
these next to in order to qualify. That is absolute key.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah, we need to start this tournament well, we've obviously
prepared with that in mind. We need to make sure
there's no ruskkers Afghanistan and the Western is we need
to win one. We're obviously gunning for both of those
to be wins, but we need to win at least
one of those to go through within that top two
and to the next stage. So there's no time for
(01:50):
feeling our way into the tournament. We're the last team
to actually play at this tournament. Everyone else seems to
have played. I think this is about the fifteenth game
by the time we play, so we've got to make
sure we had the ground running and it's against a
pretty good sight in Afghanistan.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Jake.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
There's been a lot made of the lack of builder
up for this team. Coach Steed has been pretty adamant
that practices single wicket practices are going to work, fine,
we need to give these guys some time away. We
need to give them a rest before we drag the
best out of them. So I suppose in retrospect, do
you lose a couple, you start going, what have we done?
But how comfortable are you with the playing condition of
(02:26):
these players so late into the fix.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
I'm fine with it, I really am.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
I mean we've had what have we had six or
seven trainings over here, and I think all but two
of them have been in sort of open wicket scenarios
where yep, it's not a game, but it's as close
as you're going to get, and you're able to get
that simulation of being in the middle, you know, seeing
how far the ball's getting hit, you know, seeing how
you're bowling with Carrie. But at the same time you're
(02:53):
able to get the volume, so it's not like if
you're out, you're out stuff. So I think it's been
the best of both worlds. I understand that the perception
if we were to lose one game or a couple
of games, that it will be the finger will well
and truly point at the lack of warm up game.
But I think that's a little too short sighted, and
I think when you look at the bigger picture, the
context is, you know, most of our squad, or more
(03:16):
than half of our squad are at the IPL. Granted
they all went starting every game, I know that, but
they have been in cricket mode and training their butts
off for a long time, so I'm still pretty confident
will be up for it.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Expectations around gun on what the picture is actually going
to provide have you crystal balled it yet, Jake.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Well, we've had a number of trainings here.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
We've trained in the day morning, sort of afternoon, and
also had a night training under lights, which is what
our game will be.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Due fact is not too bad.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
There is rain forecast around, but to be fair, it
has been every day and it seems to just bypass us.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
So we'll wait and see what we'll get.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
The pictures do tend to be a bit slow suit
the slower bowlers sometimes, but you know people will look
at their spinners and think watch out for that. But
you know, when we've got the likes of sand Michael
Bracewall has been so good for us in the past.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
He showed it. We've got plenty of options with our
spin attack as well.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
You're not going to let us know what the team
is till just before you play. But are you settled
on the playing eleven to a degree? Is there any
areas where you've still got some debate to unfold before
you name them?
Speaker 4 (04:20):
I think that the playing eleven is probably as close
to as it's going to get this far out.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
I think the guys who are will and truly in there.
You know, I could just tell it training earlier that
you know they are heading more balls than others. And
I think that most of the playing level will know
what's going on. But it's all about that balance of
making sure everyone's kind of still eager and key than
chumping at the bit to get going. But I think
based on the opposition but also the conditions that the
playing levens fairly well said really.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Really interesting article of recent times stack of Borum someone
saying that basically, watch out for the black cats because
they have ability to bore people out of the game.
They will just strangle anything out of you, and if
you think you're going to get on top of them,
that's going to be very, very hard. It's kind of
a backhanded compliment is it. But I like the way
they're thinking because look, the Batsman one thing, but restriction
(05:09):
of runs through the bowling attack absolutely key.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Yeah, when you were saying that, I was like, how
do I take that? Is that a good or bad
thing if you're in New Zealander? But I think it
is a good thing. But I also think it's at
the same time it's a little disrespectful of you know,
the likes of Locky Ferguson, who can bow one hundred
and fifty klong as our Trent Bolt, who's absolutely well classed,
and you see him playing in every franchise around the
world because people know how good he is, Tim Soudy
(05:33):
with his experienced, Matt Henry's quality, and then the spent
spinners I mentioned before, you know, Sam's playing around the
world and the IPL one hundred and others. So I
can see what they mean. I look at it like
we are boring because is that because we're kind of
pretty street smart and we work things out, you know,
as opposed to just relying, you know, just playing on
natural talent. So yeah, we can board teams, but I
(05:56):
also think we've got the firepower to blast away if
need be.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
I'll take a boring victory over a fascinating and stunning
loss anytime. USA. Wow, the US tipped things up a
bit like being Pakistan. I don't say you wouldn't see
that coming, but after their first game, it's like, well, aps,
hold on, these guys can play yep.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
I mean sometimes it's hard to gauge, you know, when
the associate members play each other.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
But you're right, they did look good.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
But even you've seen it, you know, like Oman against Australia,
you know they fought hard for most of that first
part of Australia's innings. Papa New Guinea I think it
was Pappa New Guinea against the West.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Indies fought really well. So maybe the gap is closing
more than we thought.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Maybe a bit of complacency on the likes of Australia
West Indies, I don't know, but yeah, great result. I
think for the tournament, considering the US as a host,
I think that all goes well.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
It will keep them into it.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
I mean it kind of feels in a way like
there are two different tournaments going, you know, with US
down in the Caribbean where there's a bit of rain
around and spinning slow wickets, and then up in the
US you've got this big blue, bright sunshine with wickets
that seemed to be favoring seamas. So game tournament of
two halves. But I think it's pretty cool how the
US have got a couple of victories under their belt.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
The New York purchase coming under a bit of criticism.
You guys looked at that, and you come in to
make about that. I suppose the nature of what it's there,
because it's dangerous from time to time.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
You don't really need that, do Yeah, we were training
when that game was on, and so I didn't see it.
I mean I've read some reports, you know that people
calling it dangerous, you know, but then others I see
Hyrid class and came out and just said, you know, basically,
suck it up and get on with it.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
So it depends which if you're a better a bowler, maybe,
But yeah, I didn't see it.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
But I've read that the purchase was favoring the seamers
and just doing a little bit too much. But I
think you're going to get those teething problems when you you.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Know, start at a venue or started in a country.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
You know, the US won't have the infrastructure that Australia
or England or even New Zealand would have with crickets,
so you're always going to you know, to expect perfectional,
real top level stuff was always going to be a stretch,
I reckon.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
And finally, Jacob Wurram, system coach of the Black Captain,
thanks so much for joining us on the eve of
your first up match. How's security looking over there, because
you know, once say scare tactics, but there's been a
few worries around the nature of it. You're obviously in
the West Indies now you're not up in America, but
the conversation around that, you're comfortable the set right now
(08:31):
in that space.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
We feel pretty good here.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
I mean there is a bit of security around, you know,
and it's not like we go out just walking the
streets and you know, doing our own thing.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Most of the time. You just be sensible and you know,
you be smart about what you're doing. You let you know,
we have.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Sort of a security manager here with the team, know
where you're going and what you're doing. But to be fair,
you know, it's being pretty busy with trainings and a
whole even meetings and planning and scouting all those things.
So basically, when you get downtime, it's just rest and recovery.
So I haven't thought much about the security, to be fair,
It's kind of just normal part and parcel of these
ICC events nowadays.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Anyway.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
You're there to win cricket matches, not to stroll around
the streets drinking margaritas, now, are you? Jacob? Always a pleaser? Thanks,
Thanks so much for your time, friend, we'll talk again soon.
Go well for the tournament, mate, Super super exciting.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Thanks Darcie, appreciate it.
