Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldergrave
from news Talk zed Be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
And it brings me a great pleasure to bring to
the program format Warriors Farwena, Welcome to the show. Gee,
it's been a long time, mate, How are you.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
I'm good mate, Yes, there has been a long time.
And how have you been brother?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I'm very very happy. Still on the same job, still
annoying people like I annoyed you just recently to get
you on the air. Thanks for joining us. You were
back and arguably one of the healthy periods of the
New Zealand Warriors under Daniel Anderson. You guys had great success.
You're the team that people wanted to go and see.
This is happening again now from what you've seen over

(00:49):
the last year or two. What do you think is
encouraging people back into the wires again?

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, well mate, that's a that's a pretty good assessment. Obviously,
you know I was part of that Daniel and scen
era when you know we had a little bit of success.
Obviously didn't win the Grand Final, but we were playing
some really good food. Fast forward to now, it's it's
almost reminiscent of that time. But I think what's played
a really big part is social media. I think social

(01:18):
media the Warriors social media has got to be one
of the best in the NRL. Add to that the
performances that the boys have put in, and you know,
across the board as a whole organization, everything just seems
to be jelling.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
So they're basically a trait that they've tapped into their
market of that era, even old buggers like us, and
now they backing it up with the play as well.
It's not just one thing.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah, yeah, no, you're right, it's you know, I was
at the club last year when they're on that you know,
really good streak and and putting in some good performances
and just the whole vibe at the game after the game. Yeah,
it's it's hard to explain, but I got a sense
that that Andrew was definitely building something special. And then

(02:07):
this year, obviously that they had suffered a few losses,
but as opposed to previous years, even though the boys
had put together, you know, strung a few losses together,
this year, there was still like confidence. I don't think
the public fully was like oh here they go. It
was like, oh, no, they're going to come right, that's
never happened before in this club. And then what do

(02:29):
you know, three on the trot and three on the
trot with a really underestimated roster at least be honestly,
these aren't the rock stars. These are the second guys
coming through. So in situations like that, when and guys
arerinted and out and the next guys are coming through,
how difficult is that for the coaching staff.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
To go, hold on, what do we do now? We
have a problem here?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah. I think if you look at from the outside,
and that seems to be the case, I've been in
sort of you know, in the circle, I guess in
the club this year, and that's not the case from
within the club. So they've got a saying and a
core that's that they put together during preseason was next

(03:14):
man up. So basically they hammered that home throughout the
whole of preseason, which is like, hey, who's the next
man up? Anything's going to happen in terms of player personnel.
So I think we'reb and the coaching staff had one
hundred percent confidence that when they had that stream of
injuries to the top line players, they were fully backing
the boys that were coming in to replace it.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
And it showed the fire in the billities of these
bikes too, as you said, to be next man up,
but to prove a point up against some very very
powerful teams. It says a lot about the coaching too,
and the energy there.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Oh it does, it really does. And I think that's
just another attribute that that Weby has brought. And you know,
the way that those boys stepped up is nothing short
of phenomenal, especially against those top teams, and a lot
of that has to go to we'by and his coaching staff,
but so to the whole club.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
So invited back into the fold again. One of the
younger players been asking you first and foremost, well, you
can actually share with these guys to typfully lift them
and improve them.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah. I don't know about whether it will lift them
and improvement because a lot of the questions seem to
come back to Mate. I heard a story that you
did not is that true. I'm like, oh, mate, that's
a myth.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
But any particular story talking about this because I got
to listen to Mate, So to let them go.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
We've got a we've only got a couple of minutes left,
so yeah, you know as well as I do. How
many headlines I ned back in the day. So nah,
but look you're in all honestly, you know, I was
there when was it their last home game?

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
And then I went down and I was chatting with
Tomighty and and a few other boys, and I just
sat there quietly and I was just listening to their conversations.
And all they were going through was really dissecting their game.
And I just sat there just listening to them dissect
their game where they could have improved. And I was like,
fire up. You know, back in my day, it was like,

(05:17):
hey where we got club? We had each.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
I saw you with a few back in the day.
When I'll leave that one alone. Hey see, Honny, thanks
very much for joining us. I'd like to touch on Fame.
The form a team comes out today, some huge decisions
for Andrew Webster. We look at what Tomighty Martin did
last week. We look at Sean Johnson, the effect that
had on the side. When you're filtering guys back in again,

(05:44):
what do you look at as far as the effect.
I mean, it's all about next man up. But a
guy like Sean Johnson instrumental, but to Mighty Martin has
shown how good he is. That's quite a juggle, isn't
it is?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
It is a juggle. But I think there has to
be you know, like you said, I hate to be
and wear his shoes, but longevity. But you know, in
regards to sew obviously he was instrumental last year. He's
finding a little bit of form this year. And then
you've got other players that are coming back. You know,
I think you got to go with the experience and

(06:18):
I guess the top line players that started the season
give them another crack and then but also have the
confidence to know that, hey, if you're not performing, we're
more than capable of covering your position. So I think
that's yeah. But mate, I wouldn't have a clue. If
I was a coach, I wouldn't Yeah, I wouldn't even
know where to begin.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
What does it think like on the team though, when
you've got a seasoned professional that young guys playing really
well and then they just dragged this bloke back in again,
does that have a disruptive presence in the team from
what you remember?

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Look from what I remember. I know for me, when
I was that young guy that got given a shot,
so my shot came off the back of Ali. Having all,
he had an injury operation he was out for four months,
so I took that as an opportunity. But you know,
I happen to sort of string together a few good games.

(07:11):
For these young guys, they've only you know, put together
two or three games, so ideally that's probably not long
enough to cement a first grade spot over the top
of our first line players. I think it won't cause
much disruption because as a young player, you sort of
know that, hey man, you know I'm doing what's best
for the team, even though I may have performed. But
you know, our star players or our first line players,

(07:33):
they're back from injury, they were always going to go
back in the team. That's what That's what first line
players are. They get injured, they come back straight into
the team because that's what they're getting paid to do.
But yeah, for me, I don't think it really is
disruptive in the team. It just pretty much they've put
their hand up to say, hey, here's what I can
do when you give me a chance, and rock.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
It up their backside too. By the way, these next
generation and coming through one last thoughts only five mo Wina,
Thanks so much for your time. Up against the competition
leading the perennial favorites, the albourn Storm. How are they
going to go?

Speaker 3 (08:10):
It's going to be a tough one over the last
three years sort of. Yeah, it's been a big spag
against Melbourne. But I think writing off the back of
these three wins, I think it's a fifty to fifty.
I think it's a coin toss. Yeah, and that's sort
of my prediction for the game.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
It's the only film, Moena. It's been so good catching
up after so long. Glad to hear you're in a
good space mate. Thanks for yours.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Thanks rite.
