Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldergrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good evening, Welcome to sports Talk. My name's Darcy Waldgrave Yellow.
I'm here at to night o'clock. Were you taking your
calls OZ one hundred and eighty to ten eighty. It's
the purpose of the program. Take a text two nine
two ninety two that ZBZB that will attract the standard
text charge. But a rugby union, bert a rugby league,

(00:37):
no cricket, although I am still laughing at Afghanistan rolling
Australia and then qualifying for the top eight. Oh that's magnificent.
Our two guests this evening Richard Aga, assistant coach of
the Wars. That team came out a couple of them
one hour ago, not really a team where people have

(01:01):
felt the brunt of the acts of the selection panel
by Andrew Webster and the crew. We'll ask Richard Agar
about that some stage the next forty five minutes or so,
we'll get him on the air. We'll talk about the
fact that no one felt the wroth after what was

(01:22):
can I say disastrous performance up against the Titans. I
just did so there you go. Mark of the Beast
kind of game. But before we go anywhere there that,
we're going to talk a bit of a rugby union.
John Hart joins us. He's a former head coach of
the All Blacks. We take a quick look at the
team that Scott Robertson announced to a hungry public yesterday

(01:44):
ahead of the start of his tenure. It was the
start of his tenure as All Black coaches. This has
been a long time coming. He's been a long time waiting.
And once we've talked to John Hart, will talk to
you about the expectations of that around maybe some of
the knee jerks around the selections that he's made, where
he's got it right or wrong. And I suppose the

(02:05):
big one is sat But I have some opinions on
that and I'll share them with you shortly. However, before
we go anywhere, I know those two characters, let's stay
right here, right now with a bit of this today
and in sport today, as touched on Afghanistan. Fresh from
embarrassing the Black Caps then embarrassing the Australians, have I
overcome rain, a crappy deck and a bristling bungledesh side

(02:27):
to qualify over the T twenty World Cup Super eight. Yeah,
back from come to.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
This celebrating team.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Absolutely fantastic scenes here. Okay, I take that back. You
can't say embarrassing the black Caps and then the Australians.
Now they just beat us, they're a better team. There
you go. I feel much better suddenly. It's when you
go to bunch right the way through the World Cup.
I just got to ignore the fact that they're run
by talibun. That is another story for another day. Warryors

(03:04):
head coach Andrew Webster has spoken around his team's malfunction
against the Titans on Saturday night.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
That's what it was, right.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
It was a case of stink judge and it's on him.
Nothing to do with his steamrolled emotions.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
It was hard to watch and it was hard to take.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
But it's also not about me.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
It's not about how I feel.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
My job is to make the players better and I've
got to take ownership around them.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
I'm happy to wear that.

Speaker 5 (03:28):
I'm going to get them.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Excited about this week.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
So it's type you felt angry for just a small
amount of time. All Black coach Scott Robertson that's spending
a lot of time defending his debut team announcement. Here
he is on Rake George Bell.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
He's going to drive in our environment. He's got all
the attributes that we believe to go a long way
and play a lot of on in the Jewsey. And
again another tough call because number howkers had put their
hand up.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
And here he is again on the oddly controversial sou
the stiti call.

Speaker 6 (03:59):
The Cupa's call brought hard and deep change. Myself looked
at all the reasons and why I picked players, and
that's where we fell. We believe Wallace is an incredible
young talent on the heart of the game, the high Rose.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
And what's sport today. And we're joined now by a
former All Black coach, John Hart, as we take a
look at the men that have been anointed as the
All Blacks for the season, the first pick the first
roster under new coach Scott Robertson. John, Welcome as always.
I suppose first up, your initial reaction to that naming.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
I think it's, you know, largely as expected as a
couple of surprises. Obviously with the Hurricanes prop Tossy, I
think that's probably is a little bit of a surprise,
but probably the omission of hoskinstitute, who is the biggest
surprise given that I think he's probably been one of

(04:56):
the players of the year in Super rugby.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
What does that say about the relationship between Robertson and
Stituctu or more's the point what Robertson want out of
this team, because, as you know, being a coach, you've
got to fill the team with players you know are
going to respond and are going to work with the
plan you've got ahead. So taking that into account, what
do you think Robinson makes of Statuti? Why didn't he
get in?

Speaker 5 (05:19):
I've got no idea, And hopefully, you know, they sit
down with him and tell him because I think you
know that was that he deserves that, and I'm sure
they will. But you know, they've a very strong squad's
got a lot of depth in it.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
A little surprised, to be fair.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
They've said it's thirty two plus four, but it's really
thirty six because the four they've named sort of covering injuries,
Like I assume that you know Sam Dowry is the
fourth block rather than being named he's he's sitting there
covering the potential injuries to tu A Palodo and to
Scott Barrett Bauer possibly covering off a tour Cafarsi who

(05:56):
went off in the weekend. Reuben Love just gives them
that to cover of fallback, which you know they've gone
a bit short just with the three three options play fullback,
fall back and keen. But look otherwise, I think it's
quite a predictable selection and generally is rewarding form in
the in the Super Rugby competition.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
You mentioned any other players that you feel made might
not have been hard done by that, we're probably right
on the cusp that possibly may have gotten that not Oh.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
Look, I think there's always those players, and you know
that's the beauty of our competition and the depth of
the competition. So I mean, I thought, I thought Peter
Larkeye I liked him. I thought his performances this year
were slightly different from what they've picked. There's a bit
of a sameness to me about the loose forwards that
they picked, and I think lark House or too to

(06:50):
bring a lot of difference. But look, they know what
the key thing then you mentioned it. They know what
they how they want to play, they know what skills
they need, and they picked that team to do that.
And now we've got to all get behind it and
wish them well because it's a big year and it's
not an easy year, and it does not easy. Starting
with two tests against England.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Try by fire. What an extraordinary way as opposed to
your general soft touches maybe playing a Pacific team, are
touring not so sharp team from Europe. They're really going
to hit the ground running. From what we know of
England and this all black team, very very close to
expect these exchanges.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
Yeah, I mean, I think this is a surreal challenge
for the coaching team. A new coaching team, new captain,
you know, a number of new players, but not too
many new players, you know. I think the really good
thing which says something about the selection process of the
former panel that they really have picked most of the
players that the former panel picked and we're very successful
in this in the World Cup. So I wasn't never

(07:48):
really expecting too much change. But obviously there were some
gaps caused by the injury to Camroy guard for instance,
opened up a third half back option and there's always
those opportunities, and the injury to the chiefs Howker, who
also opened up an opportunity. So outside of that it's
a pretty pretty much a side that was at Mirrors.

(08:09):
Mirror's very much a two thousand and twenty three World
Cup with the obviously with the exception of the all
back sort of left.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Do you mention the halfback situation courties Rotima has made
every post winner so far. What do you think he brings,
because of course you'd expect that become the next selection
or the next team named, providing roy Gard's right. Toward
the end of the season, he'll drop away. So he's
got a fever on his plate, hasn't he to not
establish himself but to keep that position.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
Yeah, but it's an opportunity and you know, look, there's
always injuries, there's always opportunity, and you've got to make
sure when you give to get your chance to take it.
You know you've got I think when Christie's probably moved
to the front of a queue.

Speaker 7 (08:52):
I think t J.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Perrenardo has had a good season and he will be
very valuable and probably pretty good to come off the
bench and close out a game. But you know, I
expect Radama to be probably just in behind those two initially,
but you know he's shone with the Chiefs. He's got
an explosive speed, he's got a good work rate, you know,
so I think, you know he'll get a chance, and

(09:15):
you know, the halfback depth is you know, Roy Guard's
a real myss for me because he had progressed so
much that you know, I saw Roy Guard and Christy
being a really good combination.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
In the form of Billy Proctor. John Hart joins the
program in the form of Billy Proctor. He's been around
for a couple of years and this time he's solidified
and starting to put out what we all know he
is capable of. But the consistency is there, so that's
not only him, but it's the coaching staff of the
Hurricanes drawing the best out of him. Surely.

Speaker 5 (09:48):
Look, I think he's been one of the standout our players.
I thought he had a wonderful season. I think his
combination with Jordy Barrett is very good and that wouldn't
go unnoticed. So you know, I think, you know, he's
a really deserved selection. I think he's worked really well
and he's added to his game and he's one of
the players of a year I think in terms of
Super rugby, so very deserving of a spot. And you

(10:11):
know it it gives you know, gives us some good
midfield options, you know, with Barrett Lennart, Brown, Ricco, Yuani
and Proctor.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
It's strong right across that we talked about. He was
arguably shifted to one side by Wallace SETTI he's putting
a lot on this guy. He's very young for a
loose he's only twenty one years old. A lot of
pressure on his shoulders. Do you think maybe he stood
up to that when he played over the weekend. Not
that that was the wet hand in deciding his selection,

(10:41):
but how do you think he went on the park
even though the Chiefs were well beaten.

Speaker 5 (10:46):
I thought he started well and then I thought he
was a bit quiet, to be fair, I thought, you know,
the loose forwards there was you know, one team's going forward,
one's going back. It's always makes it a lot easier
for loose forwards to stand out. But you know, I
thought he had quite a quiet game. You know, he's
been picked on the back of a very good semi final,

(11:06):
but they've obviously seen a lot. I haven't seen a
lot of them, so okay, you know, I've got to
be careful. I haven't watched a lot of them really
impressed with his game in the semi final down in Wellington.
But you know it's a big challenge. It's a big
move for him from where he's been to you know,
have had watched seven or I do know what he's
had seven or eight games starting games for the Chiefs

(11:28):
and now he's potentially an All Black number eight. So
that's a that's a huge step up. So they obviously
see a lot And one thing the selectors have is
a benefit of spending a lot of time and with
players as well as researching them. So you know they
obviously see a lot there.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Forget the refs call.

Speaker 8 (11:47):
You make a call on.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Sports Talk on your home of.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Sports Talks are he is mister John Hart, former All
Black coach, commenting on the team makeup of the team
selected by Raiser Robertson and his group his cartel it's
cruel word, isn't it up? Ahead of the start of
his very first season as All Black coach, HMM made

(12:17):
some interesting comments this morning he did with Mike Hosking
on the Mike Hosking Breakfast around the side around his
attitude moving into this, there's been issues around situ v STITI,
issues around some other players that maybe you think should
have been picked.

Speaker 6 (12:37):
But weren't.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
I disagree. I've said this on a number of occasions
over I don't know how long now I forget what
I say sometimes, but it's been a long time. Saying
goes with the captaincy debate around Scott Barrett, and long
time listens to the show of Memories better than mine
will know that Scott Barrett me was the inside line

(13:03):
because he has a relationship with Scott Robinson's pretty simple.
He knows how to get the best out of Scott
Barrett and he knows damn well that Scott Barrett's going
to apply what Scott Robertson wants on the park to
the players. It's a line of communication that Raiser has
confidence in. So it makes perfect sense to me that

(13:26):
they're going to pick rasor roberts The same goes with
the players that he's selecting. You take a group of
men and you work through them. After Look, there are
probably fifty players out there that, given the right amount
of exposure and coaching, could be very good all blacks.

(13:49):
We have a high standard of rugby union player in
New Zealand, very high standard. A number of these guys
made in New Zealand Marty today as well. The job
of a coach is to find a combination of players
that will respond to his coaching. You may have twenty

(14:11):
three of the best players in the world, but if
they don't respond and they don't listen, what's the point.
There is none. If you've got a whole lot of
mavericks that run around doing whatever they want to do
and don't pay any attention to a structure or a plan,
or a concept or an idea, there's no point. So

(14:34):
Scott Robertson has sifted through after being given the job,
and I'd suggest he'd been doing this through the off season.
They probably even gone to trainings if you're don't to
find the players that he believes not only a going
to provide a huge amount of spine, huge amount of
mental strength, a huge amount of discipline. Yeah, I know

(14:54):
there's an argument. Scott Barrett says he doesn't have his discipline.
Sometimes it'll change and find those players and mold them
into an effective unit. That's his responsibility, that's what he
does his career. His place in all black coaching history
will be defined by his results. Where do his results

(15:17):
come from? They come from the players that he selects
and puts on the park. So I'm not entirely sure.
In fact, I'm reasonably positive that anyone actually has a
leg to stand on around complaints of his initial selection
for this team. I just don't think you can justify
that his team, his legacy. The results will reflect directly

(15:44):
on him, and he is such a proud past Remember
a guy out in the international experience that everyone dislikes
so much. He has so much to prove that you've
got to give them the privilege of picking the players
he believes he can mold into the best bunch of
rugby players as a team. He can provide that. To me,

(16:06):
that's simple. Tell me I'm a liar. Tell me why
you think Satutu should have been over Satiti. Tell me
why you didn't like a particular selection in the midfield.
Tell me why you didn't like the way the locks
were put together. Tell me why you think you know
more than a multi time winner of a super rugby

(16:30):
competition on his first step. When we start seeing the
team play and we start seeing how they mold together,
on how they form a unit, by all means we
can start throwing barbs at them, but at the moment, no, no,
you can't. Oh, eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. This

(16:50):
is news talk z eb You're on sports talk, I
mean talk and sport Alright.

Speaker 1 (16:59):
You hear it from the biggest names and sports and men.

Speaker 9 (17:02):
Have your say on always hundred eighty ten eighty sports
Talk or more your home of sports news talks.

Speaker 7 (17:08):
It be.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Six sports talk here on news Talks EBO. One hundred
eighty ten eighty lines are open. Handful of texts. I'll
relay those two shortly, but let's get to the telephone
line free phone that nationwide talking all black selections, gleam,
good evening.

Speaker 8 (17:41):
Good evening, to ask squat chest love The squat.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Chest doesn't happen much, doesn't.

Speaker 8 (17:48):
It doesn't happen much, So I'll try and keep it brief.
Just the surprises for me. So I was very surprised
as Bell is the third hooker. I thought tok yahoo
would be. I thought he was probably a head of omer.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
To be fair, he's broken, he's broken, He's broken, right yeah,
and he's.

Speaker 8 (18:09):
Broken right yeah. Okay that makes total sense now, yes, okay,
that is the logical solution. World, aren't the second one?
As only Stephen Pirefita is the is the only first
choice full beack, the only guy who's tetually playing fullback
starting at fullback.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Yeah, he's drifted though, has and he's drifted between ten
and fifteen for the Blues. And you've got a form
of You've got Damien McKenzie and Bowden Barrett who can
both play fullback and first five eight.

Speaker 8 (18:37):
Yeah. The pointer is though both of them prefer to
play first five. All three of them prefer to play
first five. And yes, I guess it's going to be
interesting to see how they put that together with benches
and things. I think it'll probably be t next starting
and then Bowden and the boot butt. It'll be interesting
to see how that goes down.

Speaker 7 (18:51):
Well.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
I think the interesting to Meaglen is the combination about
remember when they try to use Mwonga and Barrett in
the same game, and it took them quite a lot
of time to work out exactly what their roles were
and how to stick to those roles. So that's work
in progress.

Speaker 8 (19:07):
Yeah, exactly. And for me, the most unlucky man the
Dwayne Monthly of twenty twenty four Hoskins setutu of free
or sorry for the poor bugger, but you know, like
the other he has been absolutely on fire. So yeah,
I'll have you with you that, But I do feel
really sorry for the guy. You want to work. You know,
you win your big final first time in twenty years,

(19:29):
you think here we go, and then boom you not
on the team. It's it's pretty taper again.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah, I get it, and I would feel a little
crest falling fire with him as well. I mean, it
happened to already I knocked out of the World Cup squad,
and if he's fought his way back. I think the
telling thing here, Glenn is the comments that Scott Robertson
made around I think it tended toward his defense. They
want players that can do both things equally as well,

(19:53):
and maybe he leaned towards Satiti thinking you are going
to provide more. There's another text that come in and
said that Satuti blew up with his F word comments
the sky after the same and the final twice it's
not good enough for the Orblas. I don't think that
would bother a raise of that as well, but he
would have gone through the stats and looked at it
and gone I think for what I want to do

(20:14):
this young Wallace guy suits me better. Now the question now,
at Glenn, I'm interested in your response to this one.
How does he respond? How does Hoskins respond now? And
his response will say so much about him like it
did when he got dropped out of the World Cup squad.
How he gets through that response in New Zealand, A
side or an the NPC will have to see. But

(20:36):
it's up to him now to carry that disappointment and
then drop it off and keep going.

Speaker 8 (20:41):
I think he needs to retain his fitness because he'll
be the first phone call any loose food injury. So
he needs to keep his pecker up, keep his fitness up,
and there's going to be some very very very sore
boys for any poor bugger who is playing in the
loose or in the midfield playing eat aw. He's going
to say, here's book Sheldon, it's.

Speaker 7 (21:02):
A while ago.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Yeah, Hey, Gleen, thanks very much for your phone call.
Eight hundred and eighty han eight if I like to
call through. It is half past seven. All Black selection
team came out yesterday. I have a zero problem with
what Razor Robertson has done. After a handful of games.
The things aren't going so well, and some of the
selections have proved to be underwhelming and haven't fit in

(21:25):
with it concept around how he wants to win the game.
They haven't gelled him with the way he wants to play.
Then maybe sure up for criticism at the moment. I
don't think you can tell me I'm wrong.

Speaker 7 (21:35):
Hi, Paul, I'll tell you you're wrong Darcy. First off, though,
fist off, though I do want to. I haven't heard
Graham Patterson phone up and congratulate the Blues on the
tidle yet, So we haven't.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
Heard from Graham Patterson in quite some time. Paul. Someone
actually rang up the other day or messaged and said,
has someone checked on him? Is he okay?

Speaker 7 (21:54):
I heard I heard him on General Talk back about
midnight the other night about something that happened in christ yet,
but it wasn't about rugby. Look. To be fair, I
do have some issues with some selections, and I know
the Crusaders haven't played for so long that it's hard
to remember, but it was long enough for me mate

(22:16):
George Bell. To be fair, you know, I'm not happy
with that Leach and he's a promising player and I
think there's a good future for him, but reality wise,
he's second string at the Crusaders. Obviously, Cody Taylor came
back late, made some changes to the way they played

(22:37):
for me in the loose forwards. And this is my
concern to start with. I think raisers come in with
some preconceived ideas about Crusaders players. I wouldn't. I couldn't
have Ethan black at it in the side ahead of Hoskinstituto.
I can see the upside for Satiti, but Ethan Blackadder,

(22:58):
what did he play maybe five games in a team
that didn't make the top eight, and Hoskinstituti has been
the player of the season. He's responded to getting kicked
out of the All Blacks last year. He's responded the
only way he could by playing great rugby. And I
would and I haven't got statistics on misstackles. I don't

(23:20):
recall him having an issue with tackling this year, and
I certainly don't have an issue with his line outplay
or his front foot play as a try scoring number eight,
or the way he contributed as a number eight. I
think it's a devastating selection that he's not in the
top six loose forwards, three players from the Chiefs in

(23:43):
the loose forwards, and they are all promising. I don't
mind any of them as a player for the future.
But the reality is the player who was the player
of the year in Super Rugby, not just in my opinion,
has missed out. Something's got to be happening back there.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
You're not alone in this. This has been their general
call it. Hey, this is not right now. I don't
know if he said he maybe have meant offense the defense.
I hate saying defense, but talked about both ends what
that means precisely, not entirely sure what he's going to
try and find some audio around this. I think that
black added And you said your terminology at the start

(24:23):
there Paul was misplaced faith in Crusaders players. No, no,
never said that preconceived. All right, well there, so I'm
glad I asked you. I think, as the coach of
the Crusaders for seven years, they're not preconceived. They're based
on firsthand knowledge.

Speaker 7 (24:44):
Surely exactly so he doesn't have first hand knowledge of
Hoskin Statuto. We're saying, then, and so.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
You're saying comparably, he knows what he's going to get
out of Crusaders, Lucy, so he plumped for them over Stutu.
Now Satiti is not a Crusader player.

Speaker 7 (25:03):
Only one, Lucy, Yeah, only one, Lucy. I think I
do like I do like Ethan Blackett. I do like
him as a player, but you couldn't pick him for
this squad. You just couldn't.

Speaker 2 (25:13):
But based on the fact he hasn't been out there,
you know what my primary concern. I think he's one
of the He's all knees and elbows and shoulders and horrid.
I hate to try and tackle that guy. He's absolute.
It's his carnage on legs and he will not die.
The problem I've got with black at it, and I
really hope this doesn't raise its ugly head, is he

(25:34):
breaks too easily. He breaks too easily, and I and
that I struggle with. So I get you on that
side of things. And as far as George Bell, I
think if you're looking across the board and you want
to talk about possible leaning towards a red and black
player he knows more of you could argue that Ricky

(25:57):
rick Attelly has had a very good season since he's
been elevating, He's played a lot, spent a lot of
that time in that starting role, so there may be
an argument there. But again I go back to it's
raisers team and he's going to live or die by
that sword. I mean, probably need to give him some
some room, Paul. But I think you for your calles mate,

(26:20):
Oh look at this, get a graham.

Speaker 7 (26:25):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (26:26):
People are worried about your mate.

Speaker 10 (26:28):
Oh, I don't think they're worried about me. It's going
to clear something up. I actually did ring other forums
about the and said well done to the Blues. I
didn't ring the station because a lot of it was
talking about the final I mean Crusaders. I rang up
after all the losses and we had ten of them

(26:49):
this year, and I rang Jason Pine up and some
other places, you know, after everyone. So it's good to
hear from done to the Blues.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
People get all that, and I think what they did
is they simply looked at what the Crusaders did two
years ago, and when I think we can learn from this,
and they applied it. They just smashed them up the guts.
They were extraordinarily accurate, they were quick, they were very,
very aggressive. They didn't give the chiefs room to move

(27:20):
or breathe, which is what the Crusaders did to them,
so they learned.

Speaker 10 (27:25):
Well that's right. And yeah, on the selection, yeah, I
mean yeah, well it was one. It was a one
horse race and Wallace ATSI was one of the I
thought Leonard Brown or two of the standout chiefs. Mackenzie
was taken out of it, largely because he just didn't
get the ball. And that's what you do is he
got a staff players like that. But you know, on

(27:45):
the All Blacks, I'm delighted Ethan Blackhead is there. He
did play at the end of the year and he
put in a twenty seven tackle performance against the Blues.
And you know about the second penultimate round. If he
hadn't played, I doubt you know, they hadn't come back
from injury. I don't think that depicked him. But he
went back to the automatically to what we know he

(28:07):
does best. And yeah, and well.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
What raising those he does best because he's experienced to
me understand, but you'd agree with me that with a
guy like black at it because he throws everything into
every run, every tackle, every clean at every breakdown, he
can snap and that is something that I hope we
never see again. But it's something that surrounds him. Does

(28:29):
it not great?

Speaker 10 (28:30):
Well? Yeah, well last year particularly, yeah, he had a
rotten Yeah, and it was the aim of horrible as
as well, they call it.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Has nothing to do with your bum And.

Speaker 10 (28:44):
You know what I'm saying, Yeah and yeah, I mean
the thing is yeah, but a lot of people are
now almost willing that to happen because they don't like
the fact he's here. And I've read comments where they're saying, well,
you know, he won't last, but I think he will
last on backing them, And I thought, like I say,
so TC and he's not from the Crusaders. I was

(29:06):
very happy that he's there. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (29:09):
You know a couple of players that definitely aren't from
the Crusaders that you thought might have had a look
in but didn't have any kind of sitting around as
a backup player. Isn't he kind of in that? Who
else got selected in the midfield that scream selection right
the way through the year, has been around for a
couple or three hours, has learned their lesson. There you go.

(29:32):
I mean, I think that is an amazing selection.

Speaker 7 (29:35):
It is.

Speaker 10 (29:36):
No. I don't think anybody really complains about that I
thought they might not pick him. You don't know, but
you know, I don't think David. You know, he got
moved around it, but then he was in and out
a bit within rough time. Yeah, and he didn't get
the Yeah, he showed a bit of form near the end.
But you know, he's there or there abouts. He'll probably

(29:57):
play for Tasman and the Fallback. It'll be interesting to
see what happens about Rubert Love. Yeah. I mean he's
sort of his heart said in this. They're sort of
in the squad, but they're not like Sam Dowry was
I thought would go. But he's he's sort of there.
He's not there, but he is, He's nearly there. Yeah,

(30:19):
So those guys are floating about. So yeah, they I'm.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Sure I disagree with this a gram more. And it's
it's very exciting. The energy and excitement around this all
black side. And I think we've pointed out by John
Hart too, is that hasn't deviated a huge deal from
what Ian Foster and his selection panel came up. Well,
there's a few new guys, which there always is, but
they're trying to continue that momentum and that knowledge of

(30:47):
these players and their knowledge around what it means to
be an All Black and he'll suffer from the hurt
of that World Cup to apply that to the future.
So it's it's a lovely balance I think anyway.

Speaker 10 (30:59):
Yep, no, you're right, and yeah, but he'll bring a
fresh approach, as you've said many times and and stuff.
And then they did very well at the World Cup.
We all know they were unlucky. But yeah, I think
this it's going to be interesting because I think the
team will there's going to be a lot of jocking
for position and then I wouldn't like to be at

(31:20):
their practices, I think, and a lot of those guys,
like for Tooto, you know they're going to keep there.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
They'll come back. Yeah, they'll come back. I mean it's
a combat. Graham, thanks for you cool. Great to hear
that you're okay, And thank you for congratulating the Blues.
I'm sure a lot of very happy Blues fans out there.
You can't not congratulate them. I was lucky enough to
be there on Saturday night and that was one hella
hella performance. It really really was. There was I don't
think ever a chance of the Chiefs doing anything. They

(31:49):
simply were not allowed to choking out, not literally figuously
choking out. Damian McKenzie. I'll tell you one other thing.
The box that I was invited to go to. Yeah,
that's part of the perchs of the job.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
Cool.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
It was warm and dry, and there was beer. A
wonderful place to be. Rico and Kurri Yowan his dad
was in the same box. I don't think I've seen
a prouder man in my entire life than that guy
sitting out there watching his boys play for the Blues

(32:22):
and winning the first title in twenty one years. That
absolutely ripped. I'd say that would be the highlight of
my night watching that guy. So good, so very very good.
Seven forty one is the Sports Store? Coming up next?
We took the wires. Richard Agar joins the show. That
didn't really punish anyone.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
Why not? What were you doing? It was pants?

Speaker 2 (32:45):
It was the mark of the devil. That game sixty
six plays six right? I'm right, aren't I? This Newstalk's
eb We'll join now on news Talk's EB by assistant
Coachure of the one Warriors. Richard Agar. First that Richard,

(33:07):
how are you mate? After what happened on the weekend.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Are you good?

Speaker 4 (33:10):
Oh yeah, yeah, well sometimes you got to roll with
the punchers and it were a tough day and certainly
a tough trip back.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
But focus is very much on getting the wind this week.

Speaker 4 (33:21):
You know, we we got review turned around really quickly
while we were still in Australia. We wanted to address it,
face up to it, look at how we move forward
from here and get on with you know, playing in
front of our fans at home this week and turning
the performance around. Yeah, usually disappointing, very flat performance, you know,
with no physicality from the word goal. And yeah, we

(33:43):
had a really tough and disappointing day at the office
and a day that you know we we not really
had too many of them in the eighteen months we've
been here, so.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
Yeah, disappointing on a lot of fronts.

Speaker 4 (33:55):
Leisure, feeling really deflated and sick to your stomach. But
at the end of the day, we've got to pick
ourselves up, just ourselves down, get a smile back on
his face, face what's coming our way and getady for
the Broncos this week.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
The review on the way back must have been tough.
How many players actually stood up and went, hey, not
good enough? Was it from the coaches to the players
that players facing out? What was the gats of the
conversations as uncomfortable as they must have been, Richard, Now,
not really.

Speaker 3 (34:24):
I wouldn't say I'm coomfortable at all.

Speaker 4 (34:25):
I think listen to pitchers, don't lie, and I think
we've got a pretty good group of players who were
has disappointed, frustrated, feeling let down, as I guess anyone
at the weekend. So now there's plenty of ownership, plenty
of accountability, plenty of players. I guess you know that's
not good enough. You Am'm embarrassed by what I did there.

(34:46):
So there were no blame, complain, hiding, shining away from it. Yeah,
we sort of faced it head on and left ourself
in a position that we feel we could move forward.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
This week.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
The team has come out. There's been nothing punitive around selection.
Obviously you've lost to Sean Johnson, but there's been no punishment.
And when you this young girl or the second string,
it is for one of a better phrase and what
they do when they came in, when some of the
rock stars were out and the results they had, it's
hard I think for people to go, why are you living?

(35:17):
These guys having another crack. That's a couple of times
now they've they've let the side down. Do you see
where we're coming from, Richard.

Speaker 3 (35:24):
Yeah, I do.

Speaker 4 (35:25):
But I think you know, our team will have a
different look to our look last week in certain positions,
and I think looking at you know, looking at where
we're at at the moment, I'm not too sure which
positions you're actually talking about.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
To be fair, there's been no one punished for a
display you haven't like rolled in and obviously have you
got You've got Tomardy Martin's coming for Shawn Johnson. Now
Harris has come up there. That's a that's a major change.
But there's no thought process around setting some guys down
like a Vanilla Blake or a Nia Coore and saying, look,
we weren't happy with that. Is that not the way

(36:01):
Webster rolls. I don't think it is, but it must
have been considered.

Speaker 3 (36:04):
I think all things are considerable.

Speaker 4 (36:06):
Well, also considered the fact that probably for three or
four weeks before and we've played some pretty good footy
two so I know the team for Magic Weekend and
Penrith and the Dolphins. But I still think that, you know,
we're going pretty much with the crooks of the side
that had our best win of the season less than
two weeks ago at North Queensland. So you know, I

(36:26):
still think we've got plenty of confidence in the players
and a couple of guys you mentioned. You know, I
just don't think Martinier Coori were best player again Melbourne.

Speaker 3 (36:36):
And you know we're probably the pick of a bad
bunch at the weekend. So that's what I'm saying. I'm
sort of which specific areas are you talking about?

Speaker 4 (36:45):
And I think there's a couple of players that are
there on the periphery retained to a picky is one
NTE that I think has played really well and has
been in all conversations this week. But I think, you know,
everybody gets another chance, and I don't particularly see any
harm in shuring some faith and giving the guys opportunity
to right some wrongs and put it right this week ideally.

Speaker 2 (37:07):
And Rich tod Agar, assistant coach of the Wise, joins us,
if you've got the Broncos this weekend, they're hardly retiring players.
It's a very good team. If you were to isolate
some of the areas because ideally you want to pick
up right across the board. I mean, first team fifteen
twenty minutes is okay? Then and then it fell apart.
What are the areas where you are primarily concerned about

(37:30):
that you believe need more work. You've got trust in
the players to not do this again. That's great. I'm
sure they'll respond to that. But from a coaching point
of view, what do you look at is an attitude
and defense? Is it play reading? Is there anything particular?

Speaker 3 (37:45):
Yeah, physicality.

Speaker 4 (37:46):
We felt that we just weren't at the races physically,
and I'd probably disagree where you get that.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
I say that the first fifteen to twenty minutes.

Speaker 4 (37:53):
You know, I thought the signs were there from the
first couple of sets, if I'm perfectly honest, that we
felt that we lacked that physicality and I guess attitude
to defend and to want to defend in.

Speaker 3 (38:07):
You know, in a in a tough manner.

Speaker 4 (38:09):
And I think that you know, that set the tone
for us really really early doors, and I think it's
a very difficult one. When you don't have that physicality,
there's plenty of other cracks that will start to appear
in your game. You know, your lack of root control
and your lack of investment and intent in those areas
will lead to poor decisions, poor defensive numbers, lack of

(38:33):
line speed, and it's spilled over into you know, a
lack of application around a lot of discipline areas too.
So look, I think it's easy to spend a lot
of time talking about this one. No, nobody within the
camp is absolutely trying to brush it under the carpet.
You know, we feel we've faced up to it early
doors and we're very much about putting right some wrongs

(38:55):
this week and return into probably two weeks ago we
thought we had our best performance and with for long
periods again Melbourne, we thought we've performed okay as well.
So you know, we hope that this is the one
off and everybody gets a shot at redemption this week,
and we'd like.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
To think so in front of a pecked home crowd,
I'm sure that it's going to lift the spirits. I
just carry use some slight there, Richard, because they didn't
start scoring to what was at the fifteen fifteen old
minute the minute things gidding a bit dodgy after at
the twenty minute.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
So yeah, look'd try. I'm trying to be honest.

Speaker 4 (39:27):
We'd so you know again we felt that are you know,
not putting people on the ground meet has come into
way too easy, you know, poor poor Aeros from as
we felt our intent and application we're missing from the
get go. So yeah, it's it's a real difficult one
to put your finger on, you know, without offering up excuses.

(39:49):
But as I say, I think everybody gets to trust
and an opportunity this week to put it right. And
I think there's a couple of guys absolutely banging on
the door, but to sort of feel like it's almost
we're dropping them for punishment or are we sort of
trying to get the best out of you know what
is a pretty decent team when you look at it

(40:10):
on paper.
