Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks'd.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Be Warriors up and running tonight they're taking on Canberra Raiders.
It is over there kicks off at ten o'clock tonight.
SEWNI five Mowina joins us now former Warrior, as we
take a look at the prospects. SOERNI, welcome to the show.
I suppose, first up, your initial gut response to this
team that again has been whacked by injury. How do
(00:31):
you think they're going to go after that in a
week off?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, hey, thanks for having me. Look, I think if
you look at the last time they did this, actually
put on a pretty good show, So you'd have to
sort of take that into consideration, and I think it's
going to be exactly the same. I think these boys
that are getting another opportunity are just kind of rise
to the occasion.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Well we've seen that yet historically, and now the guys
have got a game like that under their belt, so
they know. But there are some positional changes that possibly
might freak a few people out. When you look at
two of us as sheck, he is coming out of center,
he's onto the wing, good, bad, and different. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Look, I think when you were talking about someone like Roger,
he could pretty much fit anywhere in the back line,
So I think that's that's not going to be too
much of a hindrance on his performance. Put him out
on the wing. But obviously Whereby he's done that for
a reason, and I'm sure he's yeah, he's he's definitely
got faith and Roger doing the job out there.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
We've got to a picky coming in at fallback, but
he's proven us worth before. He looks like a player
for the future, so it's hardly new for him. But
it's still a bit of stretch considering where they are
at the moment on the table right, were not must
win yet but getting close.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, that's true. But like you said, topic has been
outstanding when given his opportunity at fallback. So you know,
obviously they bought Roger and as a center. Now he's
playing wing tonight, but they're leaving their faith into a
picky to come up with the goods again.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
How Keen is the combo in the halves Martin and
Harris to Vita and Sean Johnson sitting on the deck game,
I'm not really comfortable about this, but it's looking the goods.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah, look, they just seem to be jelling really well.
I think they both compliment each other. What you'll find
with I Guess Tomorrow and Sean the last time is yeah,
like there the sevens at heart. So it's almost like
running with two sevens where you've got Chanel and Tomorrow,
you've actually got a genuine seven six pairing. And that's
(02:38):
what I think that, you know, So I think they're
going to have a really good game tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
And when you look at that, that natural pairing of
a six and seven, some people would say, wow, they're
kind of doing the same thing, one on each edge.
What is the big difference for you around how that
actually matters that you've got specific players and specific roles.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yes, it's not. It's not as simple as as you know,
one on the left, one on the right. You know,
the seven is is basically the short called the seven
dictates the flow of the game and attack and so
the main responsibility lies with him. The sixth then plays
a backup role. So if you look at I Guess another,
(03:20):
a perfect example of a six and seven, a genuine
six and seven is Cleary and Loui. So yeah, so
it's not as easy as just, you know, saying one
half on either side. The seventh still has to be
able to control the game and attack and pretty much
run the show.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
No, I mean you've got two sevens as well. There's
probably a natural inclination, isn't there for them to play
that leadership role. So it becomes difficult to separate that, like, actually,
who's wearing the pants here?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, and I know that there were a few comments
made in the game when you had to Marie and
Sean playing and it looked as if neither wanted to
run the team and it was like you be the
seven and now you be the seven. But I think
what you'll find is when Sean comes back, I think
they're going to really sort of solidify. Hey, who's got
(04:09):
the seven? I'm going to be running the show.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
So the pack looks good. However, there are a couple
of players coming back from origin duty and what a
match that was. I'm surprised there on one piece. Quite frankly,
when you look at Capel and Barnett coming back again,
how much of that would they carry with them into
this Fixturecause it's pretty short turnaround.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
SOOHNI, yeah, it does a short turnaround, but you know,
the way that they recover these days. Obviously back in
when I played as the technology and sort of advice
that was given back then, it's totally different to how
these boys are today. So you know, I dare say
(04:47):
that they'll be almost pretty much fully refreshed and ready
ready to go, even though it was only you know,
less than seventy two hours.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
When you look back at what happened in that Golden
Point shocker which lost and I hate Golden Point. I
just don't think it should be there unless you absolutely
need a victor. That's another story, doesn't matter. I'll get
that hobby horse. But a big lesson out of that
for the Warriors, what would it be? What would they
take out of that and go, Okay, this is good,
this is bad, don't do this again.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Oh man, well there was a heartbreaker. But I think
it's just basically the one percent when it comes down
to a Golden Point. I think the Warriors can take
away just that, maybe just going that extra while in
the one percent things so and then make sure making
sure that they're probably never getting in that position again.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Confidence levels where are they? Because they're very good last
season it's getting tighter and tighter and tighter the further
the season progresses. Are you seeing positives here with the
coaching staff in which the players they think they're on
the lift?
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yeah, they are, man like. You have to remember the
whole of New Zealanders behind them, and they're almost at
that stage where they don't want to let let their
fans and supporters down so that their confidence live was
you know, in my opinion, they're still high, and that's
off the back of the support the crowd and in
the momentum that that they've garnered even though they're not
(06:17):
sitting in the eighth I think I just saw earlier
today that they just sold out another home game, so
you know, it's it's crazy, but you know, in my opinion,
I think the confidence levels are definitely still high.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
You look across the stripe, there's some pretty full on
players and a lot of Kiwi players in that team
and the Raiders team, and you look to the likes
of Rapana for example, there's there's a few of them
in there. This is not a sit down team, but
they've been.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
In chocking form.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
They've i think they've had four in the bounce to
the negative.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Yeah, and it's it always seems to be around this
time of the year, obviously, origin some some teams can
manage with the players that are out and some sort
of struggle a bit. There's just hope that they don't
decide to bounce back tonight. But at the same time,
I'm also a former raider, so you know, I've got
(07:14):
to sit on the fence on this one.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
I know you don't come on, mate, climb up it
as well. Of course I didn't mention Sebastian and Chris
as well. There's a guy to look out for it
and guy to be freaked out about as well. Hey,
on our side, SIONI a really exciting character. I think
he opened quite a few eyes when he played up
against the Bulldogs. He's been rewarded for that performance. And
Liquajlasima finds himself on the interchange. That's someone that I'm
(07:40):
sure everybody's going to be looking at, especially someone like you.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Yeah, definitely. I didn't know of him until I think
we had our old boys game old Boys round and
I was there for the reserve grade side, and Jerry
sort of said to me, he goes, hey, man, you know,
watch this kid, and he's playing on the web and
that was liquor, So I think everyone knows who he
is now.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
And how would he work with that? Because when you're
coming out of nowhere, no one's expecting it. Now, I
expect there'll be targets on the blow. They'll be looking
at him, going, actually, there's something special about you. So
how does he react to that? And how do you
react to that as a as a young man suddenly
getting compared to some of the greats, because let's face it,
people have been.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah for him. He just needs to keep a level head.
Nothing needs to change. He doesn't need to change anything.
You know. I've seen so many young players that start
to get a whole heap of praise on them and
then they start to sort of change the way that
they go about things. All Nicon needs to do is
just carry on what he's and doing what he's been
(08:44):
doing and he'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
And one last thing, so on fum win and thank
you so much for joining us. Where's the pressure at
for the Warriors? Is there a particular player you believe
who maybe is carrying more than they need to, that
might be looking over their shoulder? Who do you look
to you think there's pressure on you.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Oh man, you can't make me answer that question.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Well, I'm going to go on, is there anyone out
there he thinks a bit touch and go.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Oh man, mate, I think I think you know the
answer to that. If we're being totally honest, you know,
I think there are at least one or two boys
who would be looking over their shoulder, a few of
the seasoned players. But at the end of the day,
(09:30):
I think Webbie knows what's best for the team and
he'll make the right call.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Look at that avoided like the plague. SNA. Thanks very
much for you mate. You enjoy your night, enjoy the evening.
We'll catch up again, seeing I'm sure.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
It's just.
