Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk zed B.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're talking football now here on news Talk a zed
B and that we're joined by that Getta, the manager
of Auckland FC's we look at the new signing for
the club on international Finally, his name is Helky Sucker
and Steve Corica what about him that made you want
to sign him up and drag him over here?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Well, he's a fantastic player. He obviously fits into the
position that we were looking at. He has tremendous experience.
You know, he's played played seventy four times for Japan,
played in three World Cups, two Olympic Games. He's played
in France, in Germany. You know, he's a wonderful player,

(00:55):
but wonderful experience abroad as well, and he's going to
be fantastic for the club, for the young players as
well coming through and trying to learn what a preferational
footballer is. I think he's a perfect model role model
for that.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Were there any concerns about the vintage of him, He's
what thirty four years old? Does that present an issue
long term or not?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Steve? Well, not long obviously long term with you know,
he's he's a little bit older, but you know with
that comes a lot of experience, a lot that he
can bring to the team. You know, players these days
are playing a lot, a lot longer than what they
used to. So I think, what he you know what,

(01:40):
he's going to be fantastic for you know, Auckland Football Club.
It's going to bring in a lot of Japanese people
hopefully to the to the games as well. He's got
a lovely family. He's a nice guy, which is important
as well that we bring the right people to the
to the football club. But yeah, he's he's he's going

(02:00):
to be a great signing for us.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Multi talented and defense. Does he play right across the
back Steve.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
And he can play right or left fullback. He's played
center back before as well. So it helps in a
salary cap league that we get players that can play
you know, different positions and he covers or all the
positions at the back, which is great for us.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
So when you go looking for an import like this,
what do you determine first, who's available, who's the best
out there? What position you need to cover? Is there
an order of import when it comes to looking for.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Your Obviously the positions we're looking for is the most
important thing. Then you know, we want to we want
to sign obviously good footballers, good people, but also you know,
foreigners that have had the experience. We've got a young side,
so I think, you know, we we do need a
few experienced players. We've got Tommy Smith, I think with

(02:52):
Hierarchi now as well as another one, he's going to
be a good leader as well, I think. But yeah,
we look at the positions you know, we want, we
want top quality players as well as we look at
the you know, the top five leagues around the world
and if we can find any players that are coming
out of them kind of leagues. So I think we're

(03:13):
doing pretty well. So yeah, there's a lot of things
that we factor in before we make any decision. But
I think Hierarchi fits the bill.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
As far as length of contract, how long have you
got them for.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
He's on a one year contract at the moment. Obviously
he he has friends here in Auckland, a player playing
for United. They used to play with it in the
national team. So he's obviously spoke about Auckland very highly,
and you know that was one of the reasons as
well that I think he wanted to come out here.
That is such a nice place for his family and

(03:54):
for him to you know, to hopefully stayed longer than
one year and you know, have a good time out here.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
So open ended based on how he feels and what
he provides.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
For to go a bit of both. Yeah, if you know,
obviously we want him to have a very good season,
but you know, and he's got to be comfortable here
as well, so we'll see how it goes in the
in the first year. But yeah, I'm sure he'll be
here for longer than one one season.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Bit of excitement around the club. She's getting awfully close.
We're talking to Steve Karaker. He's the manager of the gap,
of the head coach whatever you want to be called Steve,
I'm not sure. Probably Steve's just as good of the
Auckland Football Club. But it's approaching. The shadow must be
on you now, so we'll hands the pump all on
and having this signing hugely important. But there must be
a few more in the tube before you actually get

(04:46):
your team together and start practicing year wins.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Our next announcements, Yeah, definitely, you know, we've actually we
started training. We've we've played our first in the house
game yes yesterday, which was which was great to get
the boys together. We've still got a few players still
to come in, still go to sign, you know, still
another five probably five six players, and four of them
will be foreigners as well. So yeah, there's still a

(05:12):
little bit, a little bit to do. Work very hard
on them players as well, because you know, they will
be very important for us because we have a young squad.
I think if we bring in the right foreigners. Now
we have a lot of key replayers. We have three
or four Australians and you know, I think the foreigners
will just top us off.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
It talks positionally, where else are you're looking to plug
gaps or sorry, plug gaps a bit unfair, isn't it.
Where else you're looking to bring expertise and professionals and
wonderful players. What are your possees?

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, we try, we try and get to two players
for every position. So obviously we're a little bit short
in the in the midfield at the moment, you know,
in the wide areas as well. Center back is another
spot that we need to need to feel. So yeah,
it's still a little bit of a little bit of
work to do there, but you know it's coming along nicely.

(06:05):
You know, we've still got to a very long preseason.
Normally in my previous club when we bring in and
around the league, really when they're bringing foreigners, it normally
takes time, and it'd be normally August, middle of August,
sometimes the end of August by the time you know,
you have all your foreigners here. So and that still

(06:26):
gives you six seven weeks to lead into the season,
which is which is enough, but sooner the better so
they can get to meet the players, and you know,
we've got a couple of trips away and you know
it's good to get them, you know, here as soon
as possible, but it all takes time with visas and
all that kind of stuff as well.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Feeling good energy behind the side now it's slowly falling
into place. And are you feeling more comfortable in your
role because it's not just about your players. The blake
who's calling the shots has got to feel like he's
in position and belongs as well. Is that working for you?

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Yeah, we've had a good three where we're almost in
our fourth week now is training. We haven't had our
full squad together that you know, we've had a few
away with Olympic Boys, a couple of way before with
the national team, a couple of way with the under
twenty teams. So it will be good when we could
get the whole squad together and that way we can

(07:20):
gel a little bit a little bit more. But I'm
very happy with where we are at the moment. And yeah,
I'm just excited as well about you know, Hierarchi coming in.
He coming yesterday to meet the players and all the stuff,
and you know, everyone's very excited about having him here.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Yeah, and last night for some of those younger players.
You've got away great result early this morning for the
Olie Whites, which is which is fantastic news for them.
And of course he's the other soccer controversy, football controversy
as well. You haven't had a drone floating around your training,
have you, Steve.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
That was great obviously for the for the Olympic Boys
to have their first game and a win. We had
lim Gillian getting on as well, which is which was
great for him. So we'll be watching that closely to
see how they go in the next couple of games.
They have a couple of big ges coming up.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Brilliant Thanks very much for joining us, Steve Croker looking
forward to the slightly bit. Surely this team taking a foothold,
getting some traction before a league gets underway. Thanks for
your time, Thanks Darcy.
