Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talk ZB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Ten minutes after seven. This is News Talk ZB. I'm
Darcy on Sports Talk. Were joined now by Ethan Black
added the All Black Flanka. You're starting, Ethan, and welcome
to the show. You must be pretty happy you got
through that FIGG and came without breaking in the half.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yeah, yeah, well see mate, Yeah, it was good to
get back out there and put the black jersey on again.
Over in San Diego. It was we had a great
week and we got what we went over for and
that was the one. So it was a great truck.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
I talked on air about the possibility of with all
these debutants, maybe the FI gen scaring you and what
happens bringing all these debutants on, and you guys blew
that one out of the water. You really had controlled
that game, didn't It was only going one way?

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah? Yeah, absolutely the Yeah. You know, it was six
Sports making their first appearance in the Blake jersey, and
you'd say maybe it was I've been cold, but I
think it's the caliber of how they conduct themselves and
how they play the game just showed.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
It did right onto what's happening this weekend, because that's
the most important thing. You've retooled, you've regeared what's been
the flavor in Wellington so far around the coaching staff
and the players. What have you touched on you.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
We've just touched on We're expecting a Nali kind of
Argentinian side. Like you look at games over the years
against them, that's always a bit of a grind and
a physical game against them. So yeah, we're just cleaning
reset zero and we're expecting them to be at their best.
So we respect that, but we know that we're going

(01:51):
about our best. So I think, was that.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Second time you've been in the open side jersey for
the All Blacks? Did you feel comfortable there? And you
think with the ability to play in a couple of
positions in the loose that you're on a prime posey.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah, there was a second start at seven for the
All Blacks and yeah, I enjoy anywhere really, but yeah,
it's six and seven. It seems to be the positions
I've played with the All Blacks and probably, well, yeah,
that's my options. I believe pretty.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Heavy competition all around the loose forward. So are you
thriving on that amongst training.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yes, great, there really is. You've got seven seven loose
forwards at the moment, all competing for a jersey and
helping each other out, and yeah, it brings the best
out of all of us. So yeah, that's great.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Honestly is You've got relationship planning with a couple of
the coaching staff, which is always good. What have they
told you about what you provided and feed gen what
their expectations of you are moving into the next the
next few weeks into the championship.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah, we're constantly having chats and what have you. So yeah,
just keep sharp and the contact areas and where there's opportunities,
are you looking up? Are you calling for it? You know,
it's all those little things. It's all the things people
probably don't see that and where we dive deep into

(03:17):
those the little areas of the game. So yeah, coaches
are constantly on me and constantly on us about that stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
You'd be harder on yourself than the coaches will be, though,
Where do you think you need to lift?

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah, yeah, we're all we're own harshest critics, and that's
just because ultimately we've judged on performance and we want
to perform for the team. So yeah, I'm constantly looking
at the areas where I can improve and where I
want to improve and where I have to improve. So yeah,
just constantly trying to work on the physicality and the contact.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
So that's the key thing for you is the contact,
is the accuracy, it's the power behind the contact. What
specifically do you look at where you can pick yourself up.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, it's just like I don't know, if you're looking
at tackles, it's how you're finishing your tackles and then
the next job after post tackle, you know, and then
it's all carry it. You're wanting the contact, getting your
shoulders through. Yeah, it's all that stuff. I bore you
with detail, but that's just a little snippet and what
I'm looking at.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
It's not boring, mate, It's what you guys do for
a living. You got there's quite a few fans out there,
and you realize you're an All Black mate, We're all
pretty keen on what you do out there.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Right, Yeah, that's great and we appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
When you played, was your first game since twenty twenty
one for an All Black, tell us about how it's
changed and what it's like under Razor Robertson because high
expectation for Scott and what he brings. Did you notice
anything particular about the All Blacks under him.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yeah, it's just it's it's different in terms of because
we've got we've got different coaches and different kind of
ways they want to play the game and how they
structure it. So yeah, it's always it was always going
to be different. But yeah, I don't really yeah, I don't.
Like it's still still rending the All Blacks. It's just

(05:11):
a different coaching group that's taken the reins as such,
so it's been a fresh page, but it's still still
the New Zealand All Blacks.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
You know'd be great having that connection that only with
Scott Robinson, but with Jason Ryan as well, because you've,
you know, you've built great relationships with both of those guys.
So to have Ryan cracking the whip in the pack
how good?

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yeah? Yeah, no, no, no, Razor and Jason pretty well
and Scottie Hansen. So yeah, but but nothing changes, you know,
like just because you know someone doesn't mean it doesn't
mean it's going to be easier or anything like that.
So I know how they coached and they help me
to be my best.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
How pointed your shoulder at the moment. We know that
you like to drive and run basically straight through people
with arms, legs, elbows, heads, everything else. It's a big
part of your game, isn't it. No one wants to
tackle you, mate, and when you tackle someone, they'd probably
rather get up and hide.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
I don't know about that, but yeah, now that's the
bread and butters of a loose forward. I believes carry
and tackle and clean out and stuff. You know, it's
basic game and it requires skill. Basic skills done well.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Plumber, Harry Plumber into the side, maybe only for a week,
maybe a couple of weeks, huge reward for him. Had
a cracking year with the Blues, of course, ended up
in a championship title. Happy days. I know you all
blacks love it when some new blokes get into this club,
So support round him a massive Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, it's been Yeah, it's great here he isn't it.
He just really him this week and he's a heck
of a nice guy and he fully deserves it. He
had a great Super season and he's been selected on
great form. So just shows if you're not packed in
the initial squads. It's all you still went with a snuff,
aren't you. So it's shown time and time again.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
For yourself after being out for so long with various
injuries and twists and breaks and there like this. I
suppose that comment personifies what you were up to because
you were out and you were busted, but you never
gave up. So working through that tough it probably puts
you in a better place as a player, knowing that

(07:28):
you had to struggle to get there.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Yeah, yeah, it's spot on. Really. Yeah, you never really
want them to be injured, but it just they can
pop up from anywhere and then it's how you keep
your vision and keep your goals in mind and you
just never know what will happen. But I think if
you're just always trying to strive to be back on

(07:53):
the grass and a better player than that can serve
you well.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Athan Blackad it joins and Nathan rhyme me such of
your dad, because back in the day said rugby's not
a complex game. You just run your tackle, you get up,
you run your tackle some more. Nothing changes. So plainly
you spent a bit of time with him talking because
he's a field full of what made him so good.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, it's it is a simple game, but it's sort
of not at the same time. Yeah, that's the bread
and Butter's are carry tackles and clean outs, but there's
lots that have lots going on. Don't think you noticed.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
One last thing, Ethan before you go, and thank so much.
Have you been on the blar with the old man?
Had been talking to him much about what you're facing
this season, Not so.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Much about the season, but just constant chats, you know,
just father the sun chat with constantly talking about bloody antient, boating,
farming or so. Yeah, and nothing changes really and.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
He might be giving you some advice around your look.
Are you going to keep that sick lid for the
rest of the.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Season, Yeah, I'm I think because we got stuck here,
he's probably about putting on here so you can't drive
out like me. But yeah I don't. I don't keep
it too fancy, mate, yes, but rough you just.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Keep it like your playmate, nice and simple, very direct
and straight to the point, Ethan blackhad. Thank you so
much for joining us. Really looking forward to seeing what
you can bring to the pack over the rest of
this season. Thanks for your time.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Hey, thanks Darcy's Top Man Mate.
