Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Ticken six minutes up seeing one went to sports Talk.
It's Tuesday nights that in August twenty twenty four. Good evening.
My name is Darcy Waldgrave. I'm here at eight o'clock tonight.
We're talking sport. Name of the show. After all, we'll
be taking your calls on eight hundred eighty ten eighty
(00:57):
free phone number nationwide. It's not free, but it's a
minor TEXS charge nine two nine to if you're going
to flick a message into the studio. Up in the
program form O NZOC President our chief executive aut Millennium
Mike Stanley on the news that Glasgow could be confirmed
as the host of the twenty twenty six Commonwealth Games.
(01:18):
How important is that? Well, I thought that was essentially
a dead corpse. It's obviously shown some shines of life
and hemlok maneuver. We're back in again. Mike Stanley joins
us to talk about the relevance of the Common Games
should its return. We're gonna kick things off. Excuse the
part with Jason Holland, Will Black's assistant coach talk about
the loss to Argentina Eden Park and that wonderful record
(01:43):
on the line over the weekend against Argentina, and what
does it feel like to play against half a stadium? Okay,
twenty five thousand people if you believe the official rolled
out number. Didn't look like it to me. But that's okay,
only my eyes. So after that we'll take your calls
on that. It's really simple. Why didn't Wellington sky Stadium
(02:03):
sell out for the All Blacks Test? Why tell me
hundred eighty ten eighty. But before we do that, let's.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Do this today.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
And in Sports Today, Warriors coach Andrew Webster has stated
the obvious ahead of naming his team to Bottle against
Manly on Friday.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Night, who plays on the weekend might not necessarily look
how it looks one to seventeen. But because we're in Australia,
we want to get players on the ground here that
aren't here at the moment. Give you ourselves an opportunity
to have two good training sessions. A capptains run in
the descent session tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Good some summarizes team list tuesday, doesn't it. We'll just
throw at our names out then we'll do what we
want come the weekend. The seventeen named include a return
for Shawn Johnson out of Pompey. Masselo Montoya. Nick mccalfe
has been named in the reserves. Stacy Waker remains in
talks about a possible return to the Black Ferns fifteens
for next year's World Cups. She's already won one, so
(02:56):
she got seven's gold medal as well. Twenty eight year
old made a debut in League over the weekend when
the Warriors, sorry the Broncos excuse me, NRL double team
beat the Titans. Coach Allen Bunting doesn't want in her
straying too farther. We've had conversations all year and he
just wanted to kind of leave me alone and focus
(03:16):
on the Olympics, which is cool.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
And then he knew I was coming to lead and
he was all for it for a different challenge.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
So I'm sure he's going to be in touch as
soon as I get back home.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Former National cycling impresario Ron Cheatley has a rough idea
how this current team could boss it at the LA
Olympics in four years time.
Speaker 6 (03:34):
Then, and I was on the coaching platform, they have
had some up and down times with coaches, but you know,
if we can keep the stability there, that's there at
the moment, we've got a good coaching structure. We can
only be stronger in four years time.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And stand out. All Black Locke Sam Darry can no
longer ignore his mum's best intentions. See they're in camp together.
She's still black nutrition iss. So Sam needs to open
white for the joto.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
When she is your moments, you know, you kind of
rush it off. And now that I'm in here, I've
got a serious manustricianists.
Speaker 7 (04:09):
I've got to take take a little bit more important.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And who doesn't open up for the Chu chu train?
I mean really, it's just part of one of the
long standing traditions of being a child anyway, and that's
sport today and to touch and the capitol purse continues
for you. All Blacks lose again in Wellington.
Speaker 8 (04:28):
We're just from thirty eight thirty the third even defeats
to Argentina.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
We're joined now by Jason Holland, assistant coach for the
All Blacks ahead of the second Test against Argentina coming
up at Eden Park on Saturday night. Jason, welcome to
the show look as opposed to reviewing what happened in Wellington,
because I'm sure you're over that. Let's start previewing, Let's
start looking ahead, because I'm presuming that's where the coaching
staff are at the moment. You would have recycled what happened,
(04:56):
but now it's about what's next? Am I right with
that one?
Speaker 5 (04:59):
Yeah? Hundred percent. Monday it was pretty important that we did.
Speaker 9 (05:03):
We do have a really good look at what has
happened in the weekend on Monday, and you know, we
have some really good conversations around how we have will
be better. But from this morning, You're right, Tuesday morning
has been look forward, get excited and look forward to
the challenge and on Sutday night.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
So the most pressing lesson for this week what do
you have to apply? I suppose what are you going
to address in camp and the lead up to this match.
Speaker 5 (05:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (05:27):
One of the big rock says come out of it
is how every time we got into the Argentina's half
we're able to apply pressure.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
We scored a lot of points.
Speaker 9 (05:34):
So the thing that led us down was the fact
that we scored points and then we couldn't get out
of our own half. So it's been a big, a
big focus of us on how we make sure that
we can you know, stack moments so to speak, and
score a try and make sure we get down the
other breend again and rather than putting pressure on ourselves.
So yeah, exits and how we get out of our
own end to have been a massive focus and in
(05:55):
just skill sets, making sure that we're accurate and what
we're trying to do.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
So the exits, did you identify a particular part of
the exits that were problematic for you?
Speaker 9 (06:06):
Because there's a little bit of a little bit of
execution stuff and a little bit of what we're trying
to do. You know, we need to especially from kickoffs
in Argentina kicked and got us in corners and we
went good enough to get out of corners and get.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
A kick on our tombs away.
Speaker 9 (06:19):
So we'll look at how we addressed that and a
couple of little small variations in how we play.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Do you like, start doing something direct like start kicking
the corners and practice so people get a handle on
what happens there. I mean, are you that do you
reflect that fast to react that quick?
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (06:36):
I know, Look, you have to you have to look,
you on a you need to be fast learners, and
you know we you know we've there's exactly what we've
been doing, making sure putting the boys under pressure, putting
them in tough spots and training this morning and making
sure we have the composure and then the skill set
to to run or kick to get out of our
own end.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Who's in charge of that? Because there's a lot of
coaches floating around, I know there are, so is there
anyone that particularly that carries the can for that one.
Speaker 9 (07:03):
Yeah, there's a little bit of a little bit of
a mix of a couple of people who know around
our seat piece and then around our system strategy, around
our rock.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
So between two or three coaches, they have a we've
got chat.
Speaker 9 (07:13):
Around that and and then it just comes down to
the individual skill sets of the players and how we
work hard at that.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
During the week you mentioned Jason holland rock is that
your term for things that went pear shape? Is it?
Speaker 9 (07:25):
Actually did say no rocks. Rocks are it's a bit
of terminology for stuff. So that's that's what I was.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
What you said around the rock, although that's what it
was like the rock under your beach.
Speaker 9 (07:36):
Towel Yeah, a little bit of that when you score
a try and then your next thing is you've got
to line out on your own twenty two.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
So that's that's a bit of a rock under your tail. Definitely,
it shouldn't be.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Lying out a towel at this time of the season. Mate.
Trust you've got some work to do around that attitude.
You said, look, you've got to you gotta drop it
or leave it behind. You got to look to the future.
So what are the positives at positive attitudes that the
players are taking. Is it's easy enough for them to
drop last week pick something up fresh.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Yeah? Everyboys good, mate, They're outstanding.
Speaker 9 (08:07):
They've been really honest around, honest around where we were
at and really keen to get in and get excited
about playing.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
You know, there was a lot of good things around
the game.
Speaker 9 (08:16):
You know, we put them under lots of pressure at
times and towards some good tries and and didn't quite
you know, ain't got denied in the last minute and
a few.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
So yeah, we're excited.
Speaker 9 (08:24):
We know there's two or three little simple things we
have to get right to make.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Sure the rest of our game flows, and boys have been.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
Great at that.
Speaker 9 (08:31):
I'm good and honest and now I had a good,
good training this morning and looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Not many people get to see Scott robertson after a loss.
How was that well historically right?
Speaker 8 (08:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (08:45):
Oh no, I didn't notice. I didn't notice.
Speaker 9 (08:47):
I wasn't wasn't taking too much notice for that, to
be honest.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
But yeah, you know, that's a fair point when you.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Talk about looking at the corners your training throughout the week,
how much of that takes into account what happened and
how much of that is pre planned, organized and knowing
what you had to do. I mean, there's this on
the fly, you've got to be reasonably nimble. How's that
structure work?
Speaker 9 (09:09):
Jason, Yeah, it's a good question, because you have your
systems and structures around how you in any part of
the game, and then within that you have the little
bits that you have to tweet. So in this example,
the systems and structures are an exit and making sure
we were clear around how we get out of those
sidelines and just giving little variations, giving boys thoughts around
(09:31):
how we can do that, and small little variations. But
it's not she's not a major, she's the systems and
structures are there. It's just around making sure we execute
within its.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Sistant coach of the All Blacks, Jason Holland joins us,
what about what the Argentines bring? How much of what
you're doing do you work into looking at what they
put for? Because plainly they did well, they scored a
bunch of points against you, and they look like they
are the business. So do you focus a great deal
on them. It's a lot of modern athletes like it's
all about us as opposed to the opposition. Do you
(10:01):
take that into account?
Speaker 5 (10:02):
A definitely, definitely.
Speaker 9 (10:04):
Well, we believe it's important to underst seeing your opposition
really well. And as you say, though they are quality
quality side, they put us under lots of pressure at times,
and you know there's things around their mentality, you know,
the Argentina mentality, around the emotion and how when you
give them a bit of a sniff and they get
you know, the emotion starts that are pretty hard to stop.
So yeah, the technical technical things, we we think we
(10:27):
know them pretty well.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
We've just got to make sure everything's on our terms
as much.
Speaker 9 (10:31):
As possible to to keep the confidence levels down and
make sure that we just keep keep the pressure on
them at all times.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
You're expecting much in the way of personnel changes leading
into Eden Park because we know the history there. This
is not exactly a minor test match. I mean, none
of them are, but this is a This is a
massive pressure point, isn't it Eden Park with that history.
So do you envisage people getting changed, players being changed
based on what happened in Wellington?
Speaker 5 (10:56):
Yeah, look, there's you know, boys are alway under pressure.
Speaker 9 (10:59):
There's so much competition for in the squad around a
good number of positions and boys are will be aware
of that. So you we'll confirm that in the next
few days and make sure that you know if guys,
if guys deserve to be picked. So we'll see what
happens the next few days. But yeah, guys are the
competition within the squad is massive and you need to
(11:20):
be performing week in and week out to stay there,
just to keep playing.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
And coming out to Eden Park get expected to be
a sellout as it always is at Eden Park. What
about looking back to Wellington? How much does that affect you,
guys when you run out there and there's pretty much
a what a very sparse crowd and that and that's
being polite. Does that slap you around a bit as
players and coaches.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
Yeah, I don't think it. I don't think it. I
don't think the boys noticed it at the time.
Speaker 9 (11:46):
I suppose the other side of the coin is when
it's full, their boys really feel it and love it
and it helps.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
So yeah, it was.
Speaker 9 (11:53):
There was a few too many yellow seats down and
Wornington wasn't there. And I don't know if it's a
sign of the times of Warnington or we're at with that,
But looking forward to filling the filling the Eden Park
on Saturday night'd be great and and hopefully hearing them
and helping helping the boys get over the line.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
It wasn't surprising to you, Jason Holloman. You spend a
bit of time in and around that region coach and
the Hurricanes. Obviously you did stand around on what's going
on here, because I know I did.
Speaker 9 (12:18):
Yeah, I was a lot. I was surprised during them
during the week when I heard you know, it's twenty
thousand tickets or something you've been sold. But you know,
it's a great She's still pretty good occasion to come
to the footy and yeah, I don't know, you know,
let's just hope that that gets better and I'll be
pretty sure that come let us low time in a
few weeks to back down on wanting to they saw
(12:38):
that stadium.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
And one last thing on that is management talked much
around the crowd. Has that been part of your discussions?
Speaker 5 (12:44):
No, not really, not really. Well, you appreciate and love
it when.
Speaker 9 (12:47):
The when the crowds are there and up until the
up until the weekends, she's been four houses, so yeah,
luck we it's more appreciative the people that come.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
Really and we haven't really had too many commos.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Around it, to be honest, really, forget it, what's going on.
I think there's a great in the machine. Quick kill it,
kill it with fire. Okay, not the case. Nineteen minutes
after seven sports Stalk Care on News Talk z B,
Jason Holland there all Blacks assistant coach, Well, I suppose
(13:18):
they didn't sell the ticket. It's what would they care?
This is a really interesting discussion and the reasons behind it.
I've got plenty of opinion on the sparse crowd and
what is going on through there, on the sparse crowd,
On the sparse crowd that we saw. I tweeted a
picture of that. When I saw it, I was stunned
(13:41):
at the start of an all black game, how few
people had turned up great swathes of yellow for a start.
It's the stupidest thing to ever put yellow seats in
the stadium. That should never happen again. When you look
at that, you question the wisdom. And there's a few
(14:02):
of my theories and I'd love you to share yours
with me. Eight hundred. Calling it a disaster is a
little too much, because it's not a disaster. They claimed
twenty five thousand people knew, not that it did an
individual headcount, but it didn't like it. But it wasn't
sold out right, that's the main thing. So that's hardly
a disaster. But when you pull any disaster apart, it's
(14:25):
always a series of contributing factors. It's not one particular
factor that drives said disaster. In this case, there were
several reasons. I'd like to know what your region was.
If you're in the Wellington region, you're around or close
and you considered going, what stopped you from doing? A
(14:45):
lot of people have said we're in an economic disaster
zone at the moment. The government of weighe In and
cost people's jobs. So there's not a lot of money
floating around in Wellington. That's why people didn't go okay, fine,
that's one. Two. The ticket prices were lit all over
(15:08):
the top. I mean they dropped them toward the end
of the week when they realized people thought they were
extracting the Michael right. So that's another reason it's Argentina. Now,
whether you like it or not, Argentina are responsible for
more beatings of the All Blacks of recent times than
any other team. Take them lightly at your peril. But
(15:30):
that's another reason it's Argentina. Save my money for Australia,
which is the fourth reason. Australia coming to town. Probably
us like cop so you're thinking, I'm going to peel
off for the whole family. I don't know, four or
five hundred notes to go and watch a game of rugby.
What I'm going to do it up against the traditional rival,
the Australians, who are unlikely to provide the stern opposition
(15:51):
that the Argentines did, or Argentina, or you're probably going
to say, I'm going to go and watch the Australians.
So that's another reason. Too many tests in a small
town close to each why would you The lists go on,
so I don't think it's one particular reason why there
(16:13):
was such a lack of people bodies or warm props
as we like to call them at Wellington. The number
of reasons, what was the biggest one for you? Was
it cost? Was it too many all black games in
Wellington like a couple in a year? Was it the opposition?
Tell me what drove you away from that ground? A
(16:34):
eight hundred eighty ten eighty Nothing drove me from the
ground because there's no way I'm flying to Willing for
a Test match to fly home again. Broadcaster, I'm not
a millionaire. Twenty two minutes after seven lines are open, Oh,
eight hundred eighty ten eighty. Oh, there are more reasons.
I had them for you. But I thought i'd throw
(16:56):
a through it, throw a few out, get it out,
water Grave, I thought i'd throw a throw I thought
I thought i'd throw a few out seven twenty three oh,
eight hundred eighty ten eighty. Give us a call. I'd
love to hear from your thought i'd throw it out, And.
Speaker 10 (17:24):
You hear it from the biggest names in sports, and
have your say on eight hundred eighty ten eighty sports
Talk or on your home of sports news talks it
be I'm a.
Speaker 11 (17:34):
Dumblet shide of wishes.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
They I mean, Ja Down's gut his fish.
Speaker 12 (17:39):
There's a party downtown here, fish streish, everybody had.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
A part in more country rints. Actually, that Nelly track
it's getting height in here, you know, the one I'm
talking about. Isn't a country version of that? It's hysterical.
Maybe one listen only then it becomes a bit grim.
Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty? Why why didn't you go?
Why do people not turn up to the All Blacks,
(18:05):
our national team, the pride and enjoy of our tierrolla, Hey,
twenty five thousand people, that's about average for an Argentine crowd.
But like it's the All Blacks sell it out? Man,
Thank give me that. You tell me why I'm really
keen to know, Brendan high What what are your reasons?
What are your thoughts?
Speaker 12 (18:23):
Well, datsy, have you ever been to the stadium and
not been in a corporate box?
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Yes, I'll tell you something, Brendan. I don't like corporate
boxes because what happens You go there and you're basically
like an animal or the zoo. You're there to entertain
the corporates that turn up. They're like dance. I've given up.
I don't cert in the crowd. It's much, it's a more,
it's a real experience. Anyway, carry on, Brendan.
Speaker 12 (18:48):
So you know, having been to some stadiums over and US.
Today we're THEUS. You know how to build the darn thing.
You've got to clamber over everybody else to get to
your seat.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Yep.
Speaker 12 (18:59):
The food, The food's extensive and it is crap. The
beer is really expensive and barely o.
Speaker 7 (19:06):
Yep.
Speaker 12 (19:08):
They put it on on on a week when people
could stay at home, eat their own food and drink
and beverage, stay warm and watch the Olympics. We were
doing pretty dawn well. And the stadium should have been
built with a roof in the first place.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Okay, have you missed any out there?
Speaker 11 (19:25):
I think you.
Speaker 7 (19:27):
Yes. Yeah.
Speaker 12 (19:29):
There's also the other problem of courses that with the
financial crisis and a lot of news that the Walmentonians
are under because they've lost their jobs for public service,
spending seventy bucks to go and freeze your nuts off
to watch a game that you expect that all blacks
to win. It's probably not good vally for money.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Seventy bucks sounds awfully cheap. Where would you find those tickets?
I think you have to be a child to bit
seventy bucks, don't you. I'm not in town.
Speaker 12 (19:51):
I think they were doing some budget budgets for seven dollars.
You know, I don't think it's you know, you said
that All Blacks have probably trashed the heck out of
the Cions. So it's not like you were going to
go watch your Blacks have a good match against South
Africa or Australia.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Isn't it a good match when the All Blacks are
actually pushed and god forbid, actually beaten, doesn't that represent
the best of rugby? Look, the game is a spectacle.
Was pretty poor. I get you, but I think too
many people thought they didn't. They chose to forget recent
history and thought of the All Blacks will run straight
over these guys. While they didn't.
Speaker 12 (20:27):
No, they didn't on the line. But you know the
expectations from the All Blacks is that they shouldn't lose
to the bee in city grade teams and you know
we probably still we probably shouldn't rate that is tendas
B grade.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
But no, they finished third at World Cups. They beat
us in Christians, they beat us up in Australia. They
are not a third rate team.
Speaker 12 (20:48):
But the history is still there that we usually just
run them over.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Find that odd though, Brendon, that that's what we carry.
Isn't that strange because people go all the Australians are
you know, there are real and devastating presence and an
effect with them. We just run straight through them every
now and then they'll turn up and do something amazing.
But basically they're whipping boys.
Speaker 12 (21:13):
Yeah, but it's it's a mythos, isn't it. It's the mythos
of the all black shouldn't lose to teams like Argentina.
Speaker 7 (21:18):
We should lose.
Speaker 12 (21:19):
We should occasionally lose to good teams like the South
Africans and maybe Akadi, the English and everyone's in a
blue moon the Irish.
Speaker 7 (21:28):
But you know, we.
Speaker 12 (21:29):
Probably don't have enough respect yet for Argentina because of
their past history whipping.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
I'm just interested why people didn't go and Brendon, I
think you've had a number of them and let's hope, yeah,
let's hope there are lessons taken from this around all
blacks playing, where they where they play, where they set
up camp. Brendan, thanks very much for your call. So
there was a and lines are open it give us
(21:56):
a ring eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. Why didn't
you go? What was the kicker? What pushed you over
the edge? We're joined now by so Gordon Tensions of
all people?
Speaker 7 (22:08):
How are you good?
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Mate? What's up well now?
Speaker 13 (22:14):
Just listening to you guys just right now on and
I put oh, I'm just run out, f haven't haven't
talked to you. That's quite interested in your conversation around
Wellington and the organics.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
So where do you sit on this? Why do you
think we didn't fill the place up?
Speaker 13 (22:30):
I think we underrated underrestorted the Undrestians, to be honest,
I think they're a very very good team and I
just felt that we've got an all right team that'll
count of these guys quite easily. And also there's a
huge so you know, the Olympics for my view was
a real success and that probably took a lot of
(22:52):
viewers as well, so perhaps that's the reason. But yeah,
disappointing for sure, and even as a player going outs
in some cases playing your first test and not having
a full stand there to set the play.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
That's what I asked Jason Holland how devastating that is
when you look at young players coming through and they
look around and go, what am I playing the MPC?
With all due respect to the NPC, but that's not
what we believe. Do you think Gordon? The fact there
are two test matches in Wellington this season and people
had to decide which way to go that one of
them was going to have less maybe they should have
(23:27):
moved that to Hamilton, because I'd suggest they didn't sell out.
Speaker 13 (23:32):
Yeah, I've had it. It's a really hard I mean,
I'm just at the spating. People have thought Argentina would
read Argentina, and you know, the first two games in
this championship are oppost Argentina, and obviously we're all being
expecting a two callsh I suppose that the championship and
it's not to be. We need to voters. So obviously
(23:54):
in Partner, We've told and they questions there and I'm
pretty sure that Will will bounce back and perform pretty well.
But you know, there could be a lot of reasons
why the crowd system two. I'm thinking that my one
first view are that we own a restaurant age, and
I think that's my main reason.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
That's awesome. Hey, Gordon, it's great to know that you're listening.
Thanks very much for making the call a one hundred
and eighty ten eighty that was said good and Kitchens.
The people that are listening, Hey, you never quite know
with his idea and underestimating the strength of the Argentines,
figure would run through them and the commentary team before
the game started. We're all comfully suggesting a victory over
(24:38):
and it shouldn't be a problem when they got that
one wrong, didn't they get Ian? How are you.
Speaker 14 (24:44):
Coolre? Have you gone hello yourself?
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Hello? Yeah, good mate? What's up?
Speaker 15 (24:49):
Listen, I've got a I've got a real big problem here.
I'm going to start telling you any ray, the story
of this whole thing is I hear the same thing
every Tuesday night with all these callers that call in
Saturday with Jason his you know, his session. I often
(25:14):
ring Jason. But a lot of this is to do
with all this all black stuff. It's it's starting to
get into my head now that these guys, I don't know,
they got too many people running around after them. You've
got so much for the backs, You've got so many.
For the wings, you've got so many, for the locks,
(25:35):
You've got so many for somebody I don't even know
what raisor Robertson's running there.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Well, I'm sorry, and I'm not quite sure what you're saying.
What do you mean you've got so many just in
the team's too big, They've got too many people. I'm
a bit lost.
Speaker 15 (25:51):
No, it's all these coaches. They don't know what they're doing.
There's half of these guys that make out their good
coaches and everything else. But as far as I'm concerned,
nothing's going right. And this is going to happen for
how many more years to go ahead of this, This
could go on for years, and he and the.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
Last coach has just finished. This is this guy's fourth
test and he went seven championships on the bounce. I
think he can coach.
Speaker 15 (26:19):
Yeah, but how did he get this coaching? You know
with the Crusaders dart so well that he won all
those games. He's lost the game to Argentina, which is
probably the sloppiest team and all around the world.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
To me, No, no, they're not. They're one of the
best teams in the world. They've beaten us a couple
of times, they regularly finished semi final time in the world.
Can't you can't keep thinking this. Argentina are not a
bad team.
Speaker 15 (26:46):
And I mean the thing is, why are they losing Darcy?
Because this is the thing. Everybody that listens to the
game on the radio or TV wherever, this is all
you hear. They've lost the game. And I mean, if
it's not to do with the coaching set up, what
is it really to do with. I mean, these guys
are professionals, they get big money, terrific money, and this
(27:09):
is what goes on it. It just doesn't get to me,
you know.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
I mean, yeah, no, I think you really underestimate the Argentines.
And as far as Scott Rose Robertson got, he's a
very successful coaching career. It was one game, but I
wasn't talking about that. I was talking about one who
wouldn't turn up to the match. We'll pick that game
apart at some stage if I really want. It looks
(27:32):
a bit unsavory. It looks like the corpse that game
is already lying on the ground and the raven's taking
its eyes out. Anyway, tell me why he didn't go
to the game. There are plenty of texts or bang
through some of those later, but I'd rather have your calls.
It one to hear your voice and eighty ten eighty
lines are opened. It at seven thirty six. This is
News Talks. If you want.
Speaker 13 (28:07):
The money, we need your money.
Speaker 9 (28:10):
Money.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
Oh, we need your money, all right, roll up, roll,
I'd give us all your cash. We're skint. It's twenty
eight minutes to eight. Sports talk here and used talk
z B. Let's get back to the phones. Alistair, Hello,
okay here, you doing not so bad? Why didn't you go?
Speaker 4 (28:28):
I did go? Well, you're just going to I was
just going to chuck in an extra thought for you
because I nearly didn't. And the reason is that I
was going to take my children, my three children.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
Yeah, you see, Look at this is that we've got
that I reckon. The injured are running interference. They heard that.
They stop the line. That's a joke. They don't have
the power to do that.
Speaker 14 (28:52):
Right.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Let's go back. Joe. How are you?
Speaker 7 (28:56):
Yeah? Good?
Speaker 11 (28:57):
Good?
Speaker 16 (28:57):
How are you mate?
Speaker 2 (28:58):
That's a bad what's up?
Speaker 7 (29:00):
Hey?
Speaker 16 (29:00):
Look, I just wanted to give the kudos to Argentina.
I think you know we talk about I guess the
shortcoming of the All Blacks, But when you look at
the way that they played on Saturday, they they were
so organized that their ball running was great. They're they're
carrying was was really great. But also I think at
the breakdown they really dominated. I think a lot of
(29:20):
that is because of the size of the forwards that
they chose. You know, they had a huge open side
and they you know, and and just the way that
they played their lineouts and there and and just they're
just ball playing was just so superior. And I think
the passion that they brought to the game was the
biggest point of difference between the two sides. It was
it was end to end. But at the end of
(29:41):
the day, I think Argentina came out with a really
good game plan.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Well, they stuck to their game plan and they keep
the reason me simple, and they made the All Blacks panic. Now,
how many times do you see an All Black Dean
panic down the streets. That doesn't happen much. And some
of the decisions that were made. The line out throwing
was awful. I don't know why you'd throw the line
out deep when you're throwing like an absolute dog I mean,
don't there are a number of things. I think we're
(30:06):
pushed into that and they were panicked by an Argentine's
side that actually had and you know why they did, Joe,
It's because they know they can beat the or Blacks,
that they've done it twice before. Y.
Speaker 16 (30:16):
Yeah, And what I saw on the or Blacks is
that there wasn't a plan B. So there wasn't a
contingency to the way that the Argentinians were playing. So
even the kicking was a little bit woful, but there
wasn't anything that was different from what the game plan
was in the first three tests that the All Blacks
played this year. So what you need to think about
is what do they bring to the game this Saturday
(30:37):
that's going to be different to combat the Argentinian style
of play.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Absolutely, and Joe and I think you're right, And thanks
for your cor We've gotta fly and we've got plenty
of people who want to vent Brian, what's up?
Speaker 11 (30:49):
Gooday?
Speaker 14 (30:50):
There was another big game in Wonnington on Saturday, Darsie
that a lot of people went to at Jerry Collins
Stadium and that was a Tasman Ladies first to Wennington.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
Right, how many people went there.
Speaker 11 (31:04):
Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 14 (31:06):
I didn't count them by head, but I mean I
got two thousands of suppose. But the thing is starts
he was at twelve o'clock midday. The sun's out, sun's out.
And the school factor, I mean women's rugby.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
I mean I.
Speaker 14 (31:23):
Was breth ignorant. Was it into the school factors? Either
it's made on and they're going to the all so
people have had therefore they don't want to go back
at at night. And and the other thing is people
it's not the all black players per se, that's sick.
It's the rugby union.
Speaker 15 (31:42):
Now.
Speaker 14 (31:43):
Two weeks ago South and couldn't afford South Camby couldn't
afford to come up for the game. Why didn't the
union get them up to do the curtain raiser for
the you know, Hawk's baby b even for the shield.
They're just making all right.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
But you see that's not going to attract people to game,
is it. I think that's what we're worried about here
when you have an all Blacks game and it's our
national team and apparently we're full of pride for them,
and we twenty five thousand people showed up in the Capitol.
Shouldn't these be alarm bells? What's the biggest concern there? Hi? Rachel?
Speaker 4 (32:20):
Hi?
Speaker 8 (32:20):
How you doing?
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Not so bad? What's on your mind?
Speaker 8 (32:23):
Well, just reasons why I didn't go to the game.
I'm a rolling Tony and I'm a rugby day hard
and it was kind of like a string of thoughts
that just kept backing up my decision not to go. Initially,
we had tickets available to our rugby club and I thought, oh,
and I'll just wait and see who else is going,
and decided a bit closer to the time, and then
(32:45):
eventually saw the public prices and saw that's a bit much.
Then I sort of thought about the way your blacks
are playing, and I'm not really enjoying them this year
like I normally would, as much as it pains me
to say, I don't have a huge amount of confidence
in the way they're going. I mean, we very easily
could have lost those two games to England, Yes, and
(33:09):
I wasn't really sure how we were going to go
against Argentina. Yes, there was the fact that there's a
Ledderslow coming up in Wellington not far away. Do I
hold out for that?
Speaker 2 (33:19):
I think that's a lot to do with it when
I think when you look at the people who's complained
of it, they sent a game to San Diego, what
about looking after the people at home. This is a
guiltied opportunity to take that game and stick it in Hamilton.
And I don't think they would have been short by
thirty percent of the gate, would they?
Speaker 14 (33:36):
No?
Speaker 8 (33:37):
And then I was one of the unfortunate Valentonians that
got made redundant, not in the public sector, so it's
not just the public sector that are being impacted. But
to flow on, I've got a role now. I've only
had of work for two weeks, thank goodness. And then
also this might be a controversial opinion, the last or
black game of that was the lost to Ireland in Wellington.
(33:59):
And I've been to a number of tests over the years,
but I went to the Warriors Bristin game in Auckland
this year and that entertainment package was street ahead of
any rugby match I've ever been to. And so when
I compared the price and the total package and the
Wellington weather risk and all these different factors, I just thought, no,
(34:20):
I'd just want to stay home in the comfort of
my home, have a couple of quiets and hear the commentary,
which is.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Another reason as well, because like I pay a sky
fee and so like I already paid to watch the
All Black, so I do it at home. I can
drink quality craft beer it's knowing near as expensive, watch
constant replays, and be cozy. There's so many reasons, aren't there, Rachel.
And we're going to go because we've got to. I
got a pile of people online alistair year rang before.
Speaker 11 (34:45):
Right, I did, I did before.
Speaker 4 (34:48):
So what happened, Well, all I was going to say
is that I the tickets were very expensive, and so
I said to the kids, I don't think we're going
to that. And when I gone online it was it
appeared to be chopper, and so I gave up because
it was, as I said, going to be over six
hundred dollars. And it was only when a colleague said, hey,
I think they've done another lease of tickets. So I
then popped online and found that they had done that
(35:11):
and picked up some tickets for us, all at a
sort of seventy bucks each. So I don't wonder if
it was a tickening issue, because as I said, I
just thought it was choker and then they did this
release and if it wasn't for the colleague telling me,
I wouldn't have known about it. And I thought it
was sold out, So I wonder if they got that wrong.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
I don't know. It's again where it's several reasons, isn't it.
It's not just one outstanding reason. I put it on Twitter.
Most people complained about the prices, but there's a number
of other reasons.
Speaker 11 (35:37):
Still.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
I think that's a really interesting one. You actually didn't
think you about to get a seat? Crazy?
Speaker 4 (35:41):
Yeah, well, I definitely went online and it was all
grayed out as being choker and I said, oh, well,
I've messed out, been too late till dealt it with
the kids, and said, anyway, I'm not doing the expensive tickets.
But then they did another release, but it was only
in two or three days before the game.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Okay, interesting, Alisa, thanks very much for calling back through.
It's twelve minutes to eight sports Talk. Do you want
to have Mike Stanley talking calm game. I'm going to
stick that online NEWSTALKZB dot co, dot en Z. We're
gonna carry on with your phone calls next though. I
eight one hundred eighty ten eighty context nineteen ninet two.
That is z B z B. Why didn't you go
(36:17):
and watch the All Blacks play Argentina? Oddly it's not
sold out for Saturday either. Don't you want to be
there to see the cursor for everybody else eating bike
broken like Hugentina of all people?
Speaker 11 (36:33):
No, no, no, no, no no.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Time eight and half away from eight. This is sports
Talk on news Talks Eb hundred, eighteen ten eighty Marcus
slash up after the news package evening.
Speaker 11 (37:04):
Colin spar of the Olympics for me, okay, yep, I
mean I like to watch it on my rugby, but
I hadn't seen a lot of the Olympics and just
been able to It was because of Lisa and Lidia
time that night.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Yeah, and it's a once in a four year occurrence,
isn't It doesn't any weekend exactly.
Speaker 11 (37:27):
And as much as it hurt me not to go
to the game, I just felt I wanted to be
a part of that if it came off, and it
came off well, I.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Was playing at home and out in the grim eden
of western west Auckland, and I paused the game when
the Olympics started proper and so and went back to
it afterwards. See the end of it wasn't compelling enough
for me to sit there. I wanted to see some
world competition. And I don't feel dirty saying that, but
I think there's a lot of it. There's a not
a really good.
Speaker 11 (37:55):
Reason, I think. I just think it is once in
four years, fourteen piece this year, recorded this week. I
know I could have gone and said in the stand
and watched the atmosphere, but I just feel I wanted
the heat, big part of the atmosphere. I suppose it
was coming through the Olympics that was starting to bo.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Did you do your video and most that afterwards?
Speaker 11 (38:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (38:17):
Yeah, nice Colin, thanks very much for your calling.
Speaker 11 (38:19):
Listen to me.
Speaker 2 (38:20):
You videoed it can tell I'm in my fifties. I
recorded it on my sky. Isn't it what you're supposed
to say?
Speaker 11 (38:28):
How are you?
Speaker 7 (38:30):
Uh? Why did they go? Oh, there's a cost there,
This is a cost that's too expensive.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
How many people are going to go?
Speaker 15 (38:42):
What?
Speaker 5 (38:42):
What?
Speaker 2 (38:42):
What kind of money we're looking at here?
Speaker 7 (38:45):
I think it cost about fifty dollars towards what vision
one hundred dollars ago and the stay No, I think
not only didn't ask, But it's only the other thing age,
it's the players want. I want you to be on
the team. That's not honest him, just like I'm an
(39:07):
example reaching Alma. You know, I think I think the
reason was was that watch. I think that you should
ought to allow to see the player anywhere. And I
want to pay for the blacks. And if you and
I think there will be still bring you people to
come and watch, because when they are gone, I don't
(39:27):
want to go and watch because it's not pay.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
That's all I have to say it, right, Okay, So
you basically want to see the best and you don't
consider what happens if there's open slather around slipping all
blacks from offshore. Look, I understand something.
Speaker 11 (39:45):
I really do.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
You want to see the best of the best. You
don't think they're there, Why would you pay the extreme
money to go? Gotcha, it's as good as five minutes
to eight, So let's call it. Let's just run through
a few ticks. Wellington didn't sell out because government ministry
is had to make budget saves. They can't afford to
shout after staff tickets. Thank you very much for that, Steve.
Why wasn't there sell out? Crowd rights and other it's
(40:09):
too expensive to get their flights from Nelson were crazy.
It was one hundred and twenty return on the ferry
plus picture to drive from Nelson. I was the lead
up time. Possibly the advertising event was too short, limited
views watching TV, marketing platforms reduced. The list goes on
and on and on. Eden Park apparent has not sold
out because of the darts. Oh come on mate, the
(40:29):
dancers at Hamilton take your phone. Watch the darts on
your phone. At the game. You can multitask, can't you.
Surely very very different quality crafts beat craft beers are
there and you can, but it's the financial squeeze. I
thought they only sell bottled sold bottled sywerget games of
rugby these days. I had no idea they actually sold
(40:51):
decent beer. Maybe I'm wrong. Remember game when I was
in San Francisco to watch the Giants play. I've got
a delicious eight percent craft bear a double ip A.
Oh it was so lovely. It was eight dollars fifty American.
That's like thirty six dollars. I had one surprise. Surprise
(41:13):
keeps people sober, Darcy. It's pre game. We want to
hear the thoughts of the coach. Foz did it on
One News with Eveythen's guy Hands and new Z e
Barnesy's an assistant coach. I don't know. We do what
we can do. I can't believe you a lot. They've
given the Archie's credit when they only won on ab mistake.
So on about that Walter. They put so much pressure
(41:35):
on the All Blacks. The All Blacks started making horrible mistakes,
some of the decisions down the stretch wire woful. Wuldn't
insult the NPC by saying they are of NPC qualities,
backing the ball over the shot, random kicks, throwing the
ball crooked, crooked? Where you got that, Darcy? The or
Blacks spend too much effort on the hacker. I'm sick
(41:57):
of it. I got a good idea for you, mate, Herman.
Don't watch it. I find that things like that don't
trigger me if I don't watch them. It's like the pregame.
I don't watch. It doesn't upset me. Pretty simple. I
don't like US ten and laugh. The Olympics are on.
It's only Argentina. There are two tests in Wellington. It's
(42:18):
too expensive. It's better on the TV so many reasons,
and don't ant me with the cost of food. It's
like complaining about the food at the cinema. You're in
a game of rugby for two hours, right, two hours?
You can't not eat for two hours? What is wrong
with you? Have a meal before you go. You can't
(42:42):
drink for two Oh God forbid kill me now. Do
not use as an excuse. It is irrelevant. You're greedy.
My name is Darcy Watergrave. That's Sports Talk, any Duff,
thanks for a much producing texts, for all the calls
