Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldegrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We'll join on news Talk GB now by kim You
order POI who's the ex captain of the Mainland Tactics,
and I say X because she's dropped and she's run
off down south. Gooday, Kimny, How are you what a
decision that one is? Drive it for us? Why did
you make that call?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Yeah, obviously it's been a tough decision because yeah, been
in christ Huts for the last seven years, making it
my home, enjoyed my time. No, nothing against the Tactics
at or just purely just thought, I don't want to
get to the end of my career and have the
worst thought of never having experienced anything new. So just thought,
next year, with the unique season, shorter season, shorter gate

(00:52):
or shorter round only ten games, why not go challenge
my staff, try something new, get out of my comfort
zone a bit, play with some new people, experience new coaches,
and yeah, that's kind of where my decision came from.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Personal challenge around lifting the steel from where they sit
right now. This is quite a task to take on.
I know they've got a new coach, Wendy Frew, and
she comes with a lot of money, and I think
she probably dragged this team on the art but she's
pretty hard ride that one.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, I guess they still haven't had the best of
seasons and they're probably luck with injury. The last couple
of years has been bad. They've had bad luck with injury.
But yeah, I guess I just wanted to go down there,
bring a bit of energy, maybe a little bit of
leadership experience, but a fun and yeah, just see what
we could do next year.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
So what was Wendy Frew's reaction when you told her
that you were leaving the tactics and coming down to
the Steel Did she whoo, hoot and holler? And what
would she do?

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Well?

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Actually, to be fair, that sort of hadn't been finalized
at that point. So when I had committed, I didn't
know who the coach was. But yeah, I guess she's
kind of talked to her since then and she's ye
pretty happy that I'm coming down.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
That's a big commitment to make if you didn't know
who the head coach was going to be. So it's
kind of beyond netball, as you said, it's more about
your personal growth in your development as you age. I
like you sound like an old woman. Sorry, Tommy, I
am old.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, yeah, I think it was just, yeah, refresh up
a bit, kind of getting a bit comfortable in christ
Church and one of my values as a person is
taking on challenges, and yeah, I just thought, why not
go take on a challenge down there, see what will happen.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
And Marianne she's not there anymore because Donald Wilkins has coming.
A lot of changes came on the premiership. What was
her response to your decision?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
I think she was a bit shocked to start with,
because yeah, obviously I've been here for so long, I've
been the captain in the last few years and I
don't think lots of people would have expected me to
make a brave and bold move like that. But yeah,
very supportive, understand that, Yeah, people need change sometimes change
of environment is good for people. Yeah, and she's yeah,
supportive and just kind of happy and wished me well.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Caim we or a boyd joined us. You mentioned that
the short season, that's short games and there's an uncertain
future around the ain said premiership with the possible combination
going to Australia, the reduction of teams. Look, we don't
know how much did that consideration work through into your
decision to go down South.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Not too much, to be honest, I guess a little bit, maybe,
just because after next year we don't really know what's
going to happen, and I just thought, have a move now,
see what happens. Yeah, and see what happens with a
new thought. If there is going to be a competition
in the year after, what are.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Your considerations beyond that? You can put as much thought
into your want. But it's fairly open, isn't it. Would
you consider going to Australia for example? Would you consider
hanging up your bid?

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Boy?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
What do you look to in twenty twenty six?

Speaker 3 (03:47):
I honestly haven't thought that far ahead. I've just thought
about next year and that decision and making the most
of that opportunity next year. So yeah, I like, honestly
truly have never not really thought about beyond next year.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Wendy Frew has said that, and this is you're not
part of this, but she said that she's openly targeting
He's going to go rustle some decent players from all
around the MATSU and having a player like you on board,
I'd say that there'd be other players attracted to the
franchise based on the fact you are there. Is that
a fair thing to say.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
I think there's probably a lot of other players as well,
and not just players that attract players. But I guess
the environment down there, they have been a winning culture
in the past, and it'll be nice to see that
come back next season. Yeah, but I guess that's a
bit of a compliment the way you've put it like that.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Don't you just to tell it? I mean, you know,
you're a very talented and respected player. I don't thin
there's any doubt about that. What about your international career
because it's kind of stopped and you know what, how
many tests? Teen tests I think, and you'd like.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
To around there around there exact number.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
So continue that at an international level?

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Does it?

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Does a black dress still invite you? He's still keen
on that, Yeah, and there's something.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
That I want to get back to. But I'm not
really putting pressure on myself because I think that's kind
of me and in previous years, having been in the
squad for a couple of years in a row and
then being dropped and kind of going a bit into
overdraft thinking well, what can I do more to get
back in there? But yeah, the last year or so,
I've just kind of taken a step back in that

(05:19):
sense and just kind of really started playing freely and
just not really caring about expectations and yet just enjoying it.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Well, you're proud of what you did seven years the Tactics.
Was there any particular moment or season or time that
stands out to you? And you go, that is killing
your report? That's what I stand for.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Oh, there's too many. Seven years is a long time
to pinpoint one favorite moment. Yeah, too many. Obviously, the
people are great, That's the reason why I stayed for
so long. And yeah, I can't put one.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Sorry, what did your friends and family think? Do they
even care what you're doing? Do you even care what
they think?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah? I actually got a lot of family and friends
advice on what to do because it was a hard
decision for me. I'm quite a people person and care
what people. Yeah, not care what people think, but how
I make other people feel. And yeah, the Tactics they've
given me plenty of opportunities and yet have just been
there for me my whole career. And yeah, I just
didn't want to let them down. But yeah, family obviously

(06:16):
played a huge part and oh helping me make my decision.
But yeah, they're all for it. Go for it, make
a change, do something different, Challenges stuff worth that can happen.
Is not really anything. You lose a couple of games that, oh,
well you've experienced something new.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Well that's the spice of life, isn't it The variety.
You've got to think beyond your sporting career. It said,
your own personal challenges and your life not based on
how you throw a netball, and am I not it's
important to you. But it's bigger than this, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Kemiora, Yeah, definitely bigger than just netball, playing with different people,
experience a little bit of lifestyle outside of netbilk done
and the cargo Dunedin. So looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Thanks very much for your time. Congrats on the decision.
We're looking forward to seeing you tearing it up and
lifting the steel come next season.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Thanks for your time, so thank you.
