Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildegrave
from News Talk ZB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We'll join now on the program by Mia Matsu. She's
the currently the IBO super Bantomweight World Champion and she's
looking to collect some more straps for herself. Good A, Maya,
how are you more titles on the way?

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Yeah, more turtles. I'm doing bloody awesome and it's the
best news I've heard all day. Finally going to collect
all those belts.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
So how many are they in total across the division?
Because I'm you've got super bantom weight, but you've got
a number of different spits, similar title belts, if you
know what I mean. There's a lot of them around,
isn't there.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
There's five five in total that are in the top
high sanction. So the all five the WBC, WBO, IBF,
w WBA, Ring Magazine and then IBO.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Right, okay, and this is all on the super Bantom
w class because I think the weights kind of vary.
You can superbandon white is the same as another division.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Or superband numbers. That's my division. That's only one minute class,
which is fifty five point three and under. Anything over
then you move up to see the weak.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Right, You've been trying to get this fight for quite
some time. How long have you been calling out for
this and going, oh, give us a shot.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
I've been calling myself for all about a year now
and been just been keeping active, keeping fighting and trying
to meet their requirements. And I've been meeting their requirements
every time, and they keep holding us off and keep
making excuses. But now they can't make excuses because I
became number one in her in the IBF and it
had to be mandatory and she had to fight me.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Her name was Ellie Scottney. What do you know about her?
What does she bring to the rings?

Speaker 3 (01:59):
Alice honesty from the UK. So she's the best in
our division as well. Apparently she's very skillful, not really
a power punch, I don't guess, but she's really tactful.
She's a smart fighter, and it'll be a tough fight,
but I ain't losing.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
What do you take into this? How do you approach her?
Do you? We've talked about this before. It's all about you,
not about her.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Right, yeah, correct, It's all about me. The focus is
on me, and as long as I'm executing everything and training,
then I can execute it in the ring.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
You haven't lost yet, so obviously that methods worked really
well for you. But if you thought about maybe upping
the ante and looking more about what your opposition does,
does that come into a tour or not?

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Me?

Speaker 3 (02:47):
No, I just keep it the same. It's always worked
and that's what's worked good for me, and that's what's
kept me calm, and that's what's taught me, that's kept
me a dangerous fighter.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
You got to go to Manchester for this scrap? How
does that feel for you?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
I side of that ill with underdog, which is even better.
Just gives me a more energy.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
So as far as you're prep to that, what do
you have to do from now on in? You got
yourself as sed you worked out. Now that you've got
the fight, do you know roughly how you're building up
to this?

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Man?

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Yeah, definitely. My frainding's picked up, it's got a lot
harder and we'll be going overseas for swirings, so I've
got he's a siring line that which is good sharp,
good quality sparring, which is will be more suited for me.
So I'm definitely mentally prepared and physically prepared. We're ready
to go.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
How can you spa were here at the moment? Do
you have someone that you spend a bit of time
in the ring with, anyone there that you you rate
as far as that time speed?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Over here, there's only probably young ones, like a young
boyfriend Rota or Mutty Honey. He's one there is really fast,
quick and slick. He's a lot faster and stronger than her.
Anybody's a young boy. But he keeps me honest and
sharp and he makes me work, so he's definitely better
than her. And if I can catch him, then I
can definitely catch you.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Do you predominantly spa with men?

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah? Definitely, Well, because it's not really I don't really
have much sparring. The only sparring I have is in
my own gym, which is Imminez and Aaron Welsh are
the only two females that I get to spy, and
that a female.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
So you get better preparation fighting the tona than you
do with the wahni out there.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yeah. Yeah, unless I go over these then yes better.
But even that's the hard work to try to get
into star you got. I want to spa.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I understand that you've got quiet power. I wouldn't want
to do it either. As far as what this means
for you, should you peck these belts up? Where do
you go from there? Where does this left you too?
As far as reputation, as far as money is potential
for what what does this do for you?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Oh? This is this is just this is not just
not what it does for me, what it does for
our people, for us in New Zealand, That's what it's for,
you know. I'm going over there to be the voice
and the courage and strength for all our kids, for
the next generation, to show them that even though we
just come from a fall little town or country of
New Zealand, with bloody greatness right here. And it's to

(05:25):
show that we are living proof and we do breed
the best talent here.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Me and Matyi he's going to be fighting Alie Scotney.
She's nine and oh she's a relative newcomer to the sport,
but she's done particularly well. Does that give you any
form of advantage? Do you think the massive amount of
experience you've here, because what you're nineteen and zero.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Now she's yeah, I'm nineteen over. She's got experience in
the amateur careers. She's had lead to fight there. She's
definitely an experienced because she's fought top fighters, so it's equal,
but she's just had less fights than me.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
But.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Or overall in the Amazon amfroys, so she's probably had
more than me, so we've both got the same experience.
It's just that I done on the night of the
fight is going to come down to who wants it
that much and who's more determined, and that's me because
I ain't going away with a loss.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
That's what we like to hear. We're seeing the best
for that one. Die a room on pay per view
and see if you can't clean out Ellie Scottney and
pick up a few more straps for your collection and
your representation of a me and Mottu. As always, thanks
for your time. Now you train hard.
