Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
That'd be We're joined now by its just to go
to the All Blacks, Jason Ryan on the back of
the All Black team name to play the second South
African Test in Cape Town. Jason, thanks for climbing on board.
A number of changes in that lineup, a couple of
injury and forced I believe, and welcome.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yeah, thanks, so, yeah, a couple of niggles, but we
you know, we believe we've picked a good team that's
probably got a good balances, some new blood in there,
you know Wallace the TV obviously getting a start and
the Test match, and some good young lads across the
board that won over Crack and if anything, it's a

(00:52):
hungry team. I know that.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, I used the word before and I use it again.
A little embarrassed, I'd suggest by what happened last week
in that last ten to fifteen minutes, so there'll be
a lot of focus around maybe not making those same errors.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Jay. Yeah, Look, to be honest, it's fair. It's a
fair question. I think that you know, we did enough
in that Test match to win it definitely, and you know,
we put four trives off spring Box, which is a
first and a lot in quite a few years to
be there. So it's important you don't focus too much

(01:27):
on the negatives too much, but you can't overlook some
issues there that we should have got on top of
and close that came out and that's a mix of
I guess that the age group that are coming on
finishing matches quite new to the arena, you know, so look,
we you know, we learned from it and it might
sound cliche, and but we've picked a team this week

(01:49):
that got a bit of experience coming offense, which we
think we'll need, but we want to play some footy.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Primary concerned. You said at the start of that line
that that's what you're looking at. The primary issues for you?
What were they that you can adjust as opposed to
your players that they're coaching team, What can you.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Guys do well? Just a balance of how we do
our training of you know, we always have our starting
test twenty three or the starting fifteen and how we
do our Thursday blox of training. They more often not
we'll get more reps then the boys coming on and
that that's sometimes just the way it is, you know,
but we sort of work out that balance as a

(02:26):
coaching group of what that might look like, what the
mix might look like, of how we finish at trainings
and just combinations. And look, that's the best you can
probably replicate, Darcy, to be fair, But you know, until
they experienced it out there will see they'll be better
for it. And I know we will be replacements, and.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
I know you don't want to dwell on last week
and I'll get away from it shortly. But when the
Reserves came on struct as, they came on a little
late and maybe didn't have time to warm into their roles,
and we're taken a little by surprise because the bomb
squad weren't all that when they first started. They worked
into it. Is that a concern to you about the
I suppose the lack of engagement early doors? Did you

(03:05):
put them on too late?

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Well, we thought the boys that were on were going
real good.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
You should have left them there. You should have left
them there.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Yeah, that's contradicting your question. We just look, it's it's
a fine line and it's and it's a real real
art of when you do bring lads on, you know,
like hindsight, it's a great thing and when you sub
and when you don't. But you know what, the boys
were going pretty good. They were for what you look
at someone like Katie Taylor was unbelievable, but then he

(03:39):
was really guessed at the last minute, you know. And
that's what elder dude can do. That can shift on
you quickly. It depends how much you know running sets
has been, how much andy set piece, what the ball
and play has been. You can look at the boys
and then they can look absolutely cough and they just
come back straight away. So it's a fine line.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Yeah, And I've spent a lot of time in your
black coaching box, so I know what I'm talking about,
Jason Ryan, right, I.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Love you honestly.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Some of the changes there lot, some of them enforced
by injury plainly. And just before we go to the
next bit of this question, can you tell me how
long Caleb Clark and black out of the second they're
going to be out for?

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Well, definitely Blackhead. I've got a bit of an overstretched
hemmy just checking at the ball, and Caleb a little
bit nicol Wana's tailbone just landing on it. But he's
bounce back really good. There's you know there's no tear
in the hemi and there's no real there's no fracture
in all the skins and that are fine for Caleb,
so we've got no doubt that he'll they'll both be

(04:40):
suspictable for any excess match being one we've got a
week off, but it's just a matter of assessing that year.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
So those changes are enforced around that. It's great to
see Satiti come in. This is a big call getting
him straight in. What does he bring to the starting
side that gives you so much faith because huge tests
in South Africa. For this guy to roll on in
such a brutal position.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Top carry, one of the top carriers and Super Rugby
best defender, best carry meters in the Super Rugby final,
tough both sides of the ball, dynamic, he's explosive and
he's quick, so we yep, it's a big one for him,

(05:25):
but we've got every confidence in him. That's why we've
picked him to do the job.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
So a couple of the positions that have been adjusted
or not through injury. I suppose you look to court
SAtma who's coming in is a direct swat for TJ
who goes to the bench can you talk us through
that decision.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yeah. Again, it's a little bit of what we've been
talking a little bit on this call Darcy around the
experience finishing games. So we believe TJ's you know, he's
he's some closer and he's done a lot of games
where he has finished maxes for the all backs and courtiers.
We believe, you know, he's he's on the up and
he's he's game streaming in the right direction, and I
guess there's a little bit of future in there. Well,

(06:07):
Will Jordan's been brave. You've got to be brave.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
You do you get rewards for bravery? I believe so,
I'm told, not that I've ever tried it myself. Well,
let's look at Boden Barrett in off the bench. He's
been very effective off the bench. That was obviously forced
by Caleb because you wanted to stick Will Jordan at fullback. Finally,
there'll be a lot of happy people out there going right,
he's in his rightful position. How's he dealing with this?

Speaker 3 (06:33):
He is Will Jordan or Boden.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Will Jordan and Boden Barrett will first, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Yeah, Well, you know he'll be really looking forward to
chomping at the book in the crack at fifteen and
you know we're at every confidence. You can play play
right wing for us, no problem at all as well.
But again it's sort of sort of repeating myself here,
the experience off the bench, and you know we've seen
what Boat he's done when he's come off and test
matches for the All Blacks, and you know we believe

(06:59):
that's exactly what we need. So that's why we've gone
for that. Max. Never easy, but it is what it is.
We can't keep everyone happy and we have to make
calls and for what we believe is the best of
the weekend. That's what we're fantastic.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Hey, Jason, thanks very much for joining us and dealing
with some of my dodgy questions. You know, we know
you can be short time to time with media. I'm
glad you kept.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
On talking to me.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
It means a lot, so thanks very much for your time.
Really looking forward to the exchange. Should be some good
fresh energy to overcome some of that embarrassment, as I
coined it, Mate, Thanks for your time.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Thanks Darsy, never short, just honest, good Man.
