pittance send a text charge does apply nineteen nine two

your calls and thoughts on the changes in the All
Black side. It came out a couple of hours ago,
a number of changes, some of them injury and forced,
others not so, and to talk about that and the

(01:23):
logic behind these decisions. All Black assistant coach Jason Ryan
joins the program shortly after we've spoken with him. I

Speaker 3 (01:48):
He'll let us know.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Any changes if there have been in that side and
as we look forward to the second test three o'clock
on Sunday morning in Cape Town. Elliott Smith with the live.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
Call of course on News Talk z B.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
That's our plan, that's what we intend on doing. Whether
it happens, no idea. But before we do any.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Of that, let's do this today.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Well, I actually know we're gonna have Jason Ryan now,
like Smith, I just don't know if you guys are
going to climb on and or not. That's the only
care anyway in sport today, All Black coach Scott Robinson
has addressed the next bench issues whilst naming his team
today to take on the mite of the box.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
Obviously we've looked at it and writes it's really important
to have experienced at the end of games. Got a
couple of names to put on there with a lot
of tests and a lot of experience, and you know,
I come on and finish a job for us.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
David Nika has a new dude to punch in the face.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
I wasn't even overly shocked, to be honest.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
That's like the nature of our sport.

Speaker 6 (02:47):
You know, people want to get that edge and obviously
Blake's trying to look out for his family, you know.

Speaker 5 (02:52):
So I'm flattered by it, but I don't see how
that was going to help him to beat me in
the ring.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
You know, skills, play.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
The bills, kids, don't take drugs, namdo Pinaka. Auckland FC's
latest recruits is the Phoenix versus City In turn chat
on the All Whites current tour is all good. There
are plenty of players from both A League teams currently
on national duty.

Speaker 7 (03:16):
There's so many of us now from Alford and Wellington.
So yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 6 (03:20):
We're still friends at the moment, but we'll see what
happens later.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
And ins our President of Matthew Cooper understands the fans
love affair with the South Africa the New Zealand classes,
as he commented on the proposed and almost confirmed quad
journial tours between the Springboks and the All Blacks.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
He also knows its lane.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
They just love seeing the you know, the Black jerseys
and the Green jerseys at each other. I think we
just got to keep focusing on the special robbery and
and and capitalize and I'll let all the high people
above my pay grade work on that. Old to stick
to being president.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Yeah, good man, stay in your lane and that's sport today.
We're joined now by sister coach the All Blacks, Jason Ryan,
on the back of the All Black team name to
play second at South African Test in Cape Town. Jason,
thanks for climbing on board. A number of changes in
that lineup, a couple of injury and forced I believe

(04:16):
in welcome.

Speaker 7 (04:19):
Yeah, thanks so, Yeah, a couple of niggles, but we
you know, we believe we've picked a good team that's
probably got a good balances, some new blood in there,
you know, Wallace the TV is getting a start in
the Test match, and some good young lads across the
board that won over Crack and if anything, that's a

(04:40):
hungry team. I know that.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah. I used the word before and I use it again.
A little embarrassed, I'd suggest by what happened last week
in that last ten to fifteen minutes, So there'll be
a lot of focus around maybe not making those same errors.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Jay.

Speaker 7 (04:55):
Yeah, Look, to be honest, it's fair, fair question. I
think that you know, we did enough in that Test
match to win it definitely, and you know we put
four trives of box which is a first and a
lot in quite a few years to be there. So
it's important you don't focus too much on the negatives

(05:16):
too much, but you can't overlook some issues there that
we should have got on top of and close that
came out. And that's a mix of I guess that
the age group that are coming on finishing matches quite
new to their inner you know, so lo we you know,
we learned from it. And it might sound cliche, and

(05:36):
but we've picked a team this week that got a
bit of experience coming offense, which we think we'll need,
but we want to play some footy.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Primary concerned. You said at the start of that line
that that's what you're looking at. The primary issues for you?
What were they that you can adjust as opposed to
your players that they're coaching team, What can you guys do.

Speaker 8 (05:57):
Well?

Speaker 7 (05:57):
Just a balance of how we do our training of
you know, we always have our starting test twenty three
or the starting fifteen, and how we do our Thursday
blox of training. They more often not we'll get more
reps than the boys coming on and that that's sometimes
just the way it is, you know, But we sort
of work out that balance as a coaching group of
what that might look like what the mix might look

(06:18):
like of how we how we finish at trainings and
just combinations and look, that's the best you can probably
replicate Darcy, to be fair. But you know, until they
experienced it out there will see they'll be better for it.
And I know we will be there replacements.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
And I know you don't want to dwell on last
week and I'll get away from it shortly. But when
the Reserves came on struct as, they came on a
little late and maybe didn't have time to warm into
their roles, and we're taken a little by surprise because
the bomb squad weren't all that when they first started
they worked into it. Is that a concern to you
about the I suppose the lack of engagement early doors.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Did you put them on too late?

Speaker 7 (06:56):
Well, we thought the boys that were on were going
real good.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
You should have left them there. You should there, You
should have left them there.

Speaker 7 (07:06):
Yeah, that's con dedicting your question. We just look, it's
a fine line and it's and it's a real real
art of when you do bring that on, you know,
like hindsight, it's a great thing and when you sub
and when you don't. But you know lot what the
boys were going pretty good. They were for what you
look at someone like Katie Taylor was unbelievable, but then

(07:27):
he was really guessed at the last minute, you know.
And that's what elder Tude can do. It can shift
on you quickly. It depends how much you know running
sets has been, how much andy set piece, what the
ball and play has been. You can look at the
boys and then they can look absolutely cough and they
just come back straight away. So it's a fine line.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah, And I've spent a lot of time in the
all black coaching box, so I know what I'm talking about.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Jason Ryan, Right.

Speaker 7 (07:51):
I love your honestly.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Some of the changes there a lot, some of them
enforced by injury plainly. And just before we go to
the next bit of this question, can you tell me
how long Caleb Clark and black Out of the second
are going to be out for?

Speaker 7 (08:07):
Well, definitely Blackhead got a bit of an overstretched hemmy
just checking at the ball, and Caleb a little bit
nicole One's tailbone just landing on it. But he's bounce
back really good. There's you know, there's no tear in
the hemi and there's no real there's no fracture in
all the skins and that a fine four Caleb, so
we've got no doubt that he'll they'll both be suspictable

(08:30):
for any excess match being one we've got a week off,
but it's just a matter of assisting that year.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
So those things are enforced around that. It's great to
see Satiti come in. This is a big call getting
him straight in. What what does he bring to the
starting side that gives you so much faith because huge
test in South Africa for this guy to roll on
in such a brutal position.

Speaker 7 (08:54):
Top carrier one top carriers and Super Rugby best defender,
best carry meters and Super Rugby final, tough side of
the ball, dynamic, he's explosive and he's quick, so we yep,
it's a big one for him, but we've got every

(09:14):
confidence in him. That's why we've picked him to do
the job.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
So a couple of the positions that have been adjusted
or not through injury. I suppose you look to Courtima,
who's coming in is a direct swat for TJ who
goes to the bench. Can you talk us through that decision.

Speaker 7 (09:33):
Yeah, Again, it's a little bit of what We've been
talking a little bit on this call Darcy around the
experience finishing games. So we believe TJ's, you know, he's
some closer and he's done a lot of games where
he has finished maxes for the all backs and courtiers.
We believe, you know, he's he's on the up and
he's he's game streaming in the right direction. And I
guess there's a little bit of future in there as well.

Speaker 6 (09:55):
Well, Jordan's been brave.

Speaker 7 (09:57):
You've got to be brave, you do.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
You get rewards for bravery? I believe so I'm told,
not that I've ever tried it myself. Let's look at
Boden barrats In off the bench. He's been very effective
off the bench. That was obviously forced by Caleb because
you wanted to stick Will Jordan at fullback. Finally, there'll
be a lot of happy people out there going right,
he's in his rightful position.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
How's he dealing with this?

Speaker 7 (10:21):
He is Will Jordan or Boden.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Will Jordan and Bowden bear at Will first?

Speaker 7 (10:27):
Yeah, yeah, well, you know he'll be really looking forward
to chomping at the book in the crack at fifteen
and you know we're at every confidence you can play
play right wing for us, no problem at all as well.
But again it's sort of sort of repeating myself here.
The experience off the bench, and you know we've seen
what Boat he's done when he's come off and test
matches for the All Blacks, and you know we believe

(10:48):
that's exactly what we need. So that's why we've gone
for that. Max. Never easy, but it is what it is.
We can't keep everyone happy and we have to make
calls and for what we believe is the best week
and that's what we're fantastic.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Hey, Jason, thanks very much for joining us and dealing
with some of my dodgy questions. You know, we know
you can be short time to time with media. I'm
glad you kept on talking to me. It means a lot,
So thanks very much for your time. Really looking forward
to the exchange. Should be some good fresh energy to
overcome some of that embarrassment. As I coined it, Mate,
thanks for your time.

Speaker 7 (11:21):
Thanks Darsy, never short, just honest, good man.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
You hear it from the biggest names and sports men.

Speaker 9 (11:27):
Have your say on eighty eighty Sports Talk or more
on your home of sports news Talks.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
It be never short jouster. Honest, there you go. Jason Rehin,
assistant coach of the All Blacks, talking about the team
that was named a couple of hours ago to take
on the All Blacks and that all important second Test match.
They don't want to fold to the spring box yet again.
A lot to talk about in these selections. Yes, some

(11:56):
of them were enforced, and it's nice to know that
black out of the second and Caleb Clark should be
back and running again in a couple of weeks time,
so that's nice to know. But there's some other calls
there as well that might raise an eyebrow or two,
And I'd like to ask you the one that sticks

(12:17):
out the most in your mind. I wouldn't say there
knee jerk changes. They seem to be reasonably sensible changes.
But I wonder how much of the lack of traction
that the bench delivered last weekend be they were shouldn't

(12:38):
have been substituted at all, or got substituted too late.
It wasn't contradictory. It was two questions, but that's okay.
Jason Ryan heard what he heard, Colors m he comes
in and TJ is coming off the bench. It's a
good move, It's an exciting move.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
Do you think it's a sensible move?

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Boden Barrett was forced to go there. But I think
most of us agree that Bowden Barrett has been at
best this year when he has injected himself at the
end end of the game around tiring bodies and made
a mockery of them. I think the ten to fifteen
axis of Mackenzie and Barrett not necessarily what the team needs.

(13:18):
So Caleb conveniently gets injured, incomes another winger, and the
other winger back to fall back Boden Barrett eventually. In essence,
it's a good looking team. SATITHI, that's probably the one
that jumped out at most of us. Your thoughts O
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open, you
can call through, we discuss that all black team. You

(13:42):
a bit more comfortable now, are you my? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:46):
This is more like it?

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Or do you still have the horrors? Because I think
that last fifteen minutes last week that slapped a lot
of people around and it eroded some trust not only
in the selections, but the game plan and the ability
of our bomb diffusal squad itself up. Oh, the Irony

(14:08):
E one hundred eighty ten eighty lines, I Ravens NEWSTALKSB run.

Speaker 9 (14:14):
The right call is your call on eight hundred eighty
ten eighty Sports Talk call on your home of Sports
News TALKSB.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Because you walk up in the miner with the initiatives
seven twenty three Sports Talk are on Newstalk's eb oh
eight hundred eighty ten eighty lines are open. Reflecting on
this All Black twenty three, it's been named to play
three o'clock on Sunday morning, Cape Town Elliot Smith with
the call for News Talk ZB. Indeed, Eli will join

(14:56):
us Slater on the program to pick apart the South
African team that was released around about twenty five minutes
to go. We'll jump to your call shortly eight hundred
eighty ten eighty just running through that All Black team
first as requested, coming in at fullback as will Jordan
seev Reese on the right wing, Ricky Yuanni and Geordie
Barrett at the center pairings Mark Tully are coming in

(15:18):
on the left wing. Mackenzie Ratima, are you nine and ten?
Ardisavia Sam Cain at open side and what was sititi
of the blind side That is your back three to
Scott Barrett. Are the locking pair in your front row
consists of To Lomax, Condy Taylor and Tom Mighty Williams
off the bench, A Suffol Moor off, a tot of

(15:39):
Fussy Fletcher, New Sam Darry Luke Jacobson, DJ Bettinara Bowden,
Barrett and Anton Lennett Brown. I'll run that South African
team for you later in the piece. Right, let's get
to the phones now they get a Graham Sorry Graham kine, Hi,
how are you?

Speaker 8 (15:56):
How goodness is? I haven't really felt above since the nineties,
That's what I reckon. D two or four South African
were pretty to nine team was pretty good. But this
is for real, mate, This has got that feel taking
us back. Got on the offers too, because you know

(16:16):
they're won three in a row, but our discipline is
killing us. Man tooking the red card Wild Cup final
red card. This one the other card in the last
you know, the most important end of the match and
the business in that he can't afford to lose a
man to the bin. That was fifteen on the clock
and we should have closed that out. So there was
our own fault and blackouted just needles offloads of bloody candle.

(16:37):
Clark on the left and Prime Time said we we
got ourselves the playing in the Saints, man, I mean.

Speaker 2 (16:42):
Who we had, But that was our fault, That's what
I said, embarrassed to Jason, right, it's an embarrassing before.

Speaker 8 (16:48):
It's I mean, they're twenty thirteen. It can off forget
their twenty thirteen. We held onto the Boy against Island
at the Stadium of Evy, I think, and we held
onto the phases about twenty five phases before Dane Coles
offloads through Ryan. Yeah, and that was through phase after
phase and what is both what is Blo bear doing it?

Speaker 10 (17:11):
Kids?

Speaker 8 (17:11):
Sit away twice for a bit of a hail Mary
and but you know it's a few bad mistakes made.
But back onto the So this is good for Raby, mate,
this is good on this efforts because they're really good,
you know, because they got boring there for after a while,
din't it, you know, because we keeps on winning all that.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
I wasn't board of constant victory.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
I remember having this discussion on it.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
You tell me when we start losing all the time,
it was still boring.

Speaker 8 (17:36):
Look, I mean if we just tied out their discipline hedron.
But onto the selections. Now, you wouldn't believe I was
just trying to look for the video on YouTuber. I
posted comments. You know you can post comments, and I
had I think the game is changing through a seven
to one split, and actually, and I actually think you

(17:57):
want proper experience coming off the bench, then you probably
would throwing the newbie on you and he's head at
the moment. So my selections, I actually hit Wallace a
TV starting, but I had him at number eight in
his favorite position, and I had Sam Kine open and
I don't know about Tod Black, but Black Ana and
number six.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Now Todd hasn't played for years.

Speaker 6 (18:18):
It's Athan Ethan.

Speaker 8 (18:20):
I felt that someone else did to one of those commentators.
But how I kept one half pick is is us
the as the only back and that's Cortez. And because
Damie McKinsey covered number nine and against France in twenty seventeen.
If you remember, you like the.

Speaker 3 (18:41):
Look of this team, and you'd think I.

Speaker 8 (18:44):
Nearly did that hanging with me and so I've gone
from my battery. Yeah, I've told you about it. So
I started with Ethan, Sam Kane, Wallace, the t T
because I think we need it, Yes, for a punch
like that. Number eight last week was mainths broken kin,

(19:04):
How could you go pack? Just trying to compare my
selections that I I win the seven one split mate
and h so I've told you that in the course
he's in Dmac to cover number nine and off the
bench would have been as well as Hardie coming in
Dalton Papa, and I'll go for.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
I think it's magnificent. You spend all the time picking
the team, but your team never has to play. And
that's something that Grant Fox is to say to me
all the time is that among our select teams, my
team doesn't have to play. These guys select the team
that has to play. Thanks Caine for that. But we'll
move on to Graham. How a gony pale?

Speaker 3 (19:47):
How are you?

Speaker 8 (19:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (19:48):
Good?

Speaker 11 (19:48):
Garcy very good? Yeah? On the selection. Yeah, I'll disappointed
Ethan Blackadder out obviously because he played a great game
last week.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
And do you think it's fair for me to describe
him as a burlap sack full of crank shaft So
that's how hard he is to tackle and when he
hits people they feel like that.

Speaker 7 (20:07):
That's right.

Speaker 11 (20:08):
Yeah, No, he's a workaholic, and but yeah, I would
have had I would like Cana out of it's a
TV possibly at eight. But yeah, he's a good player.
I'm glad you know he's made it into this. That's
why said that. It's it's via one of the better players.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
But it's well, it's disruption, Graham, it's disruption. You're already
making a number of changes. So to suddenly put Ardie
Savilla will take him out of the eight role who's
become comfortable would probably not be the best idea as
far as continuity within the side.

Speaker 3 (20:39):
Is that is that fair?

Speaker 4 (20:41):
Oh?

Speaker 11 (20:42):
Yeah, yeah it is. Yeah, yeah, but I suppose you know,
he's said the argument is he's probably he played pretty
well last week, but yeah, he's probably not playing as
well as what he did out of the World Cup
last year. But but you don't leave a player like
that out either because he's wild player of the year
like the last two years. Whatever it is. But I'm

(21:03):
pleased to see Will Jordan at fallback at last. Yeah,
that's yeah. I think it's great, you know, because I
think Boden's best off the bench, and then I think
Will Jordan is the best fallback. I know people the
argument rages about him on the wing too, but he's
scored lots of tries. But I know how good he
is at fallback. But yeah, I just the midfield stays

(21:27):
the same. It's probably there'll be a lot of people
with comments about that. But Jordi Barrett had a great
game last week. He had to stay. But yeah, Rico's
there at thirteen, so we'll see what happens.

Speaker 12 (21:39):
You can things.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
You can't make too many changes because it becomes a
side show, a distraction. You need to stick a lot
of the core in there if you're going to be
messing around, especially if you're changing your half back up
as well. I think that's reasonably big, and also the
outside backs.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
That's hard.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
And Graham, I'll leave you with this text saying two
points three the AB's team. It would not be better
off Teity was number eight and Savia on the site.
So that backs you up there, Graham plus South Africa
will see the back three is defensive weakness. Tartalia and
Reese often caught out of position, and with Jordan not

(22:19):
playing number fifteen for a long time, I can see
a lot of South African kicking going their way. Probably
Mackenzie will drop back as cover, but we've got the
attacking potential under control. More of your calls up next.
Hundred eighty, ten eighty. This is sports talk on News
Talk ZB.

Speaker 12 (22:40):
More of you up next, twenty.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
Five eight Sports Talkhound News Talk ZB can tell when
and some military is producing their program. There's no country
Western music.

Speaker 12 (23:14):
This is a little bit.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
I've just conveniently ignored that it's been grinding my gears
of recent times. But that's all right, let's get back
to the phones. Before we do that, a couple of
quick texts will Jordan folds under pressure and is only
good when put in the clear.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
Ouch.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
This other character said, I think saying embarrassing is way
too harsh. A four point loss the red blue fourteen penalties.
We've got a dodgy yellow card and just lost to
the World Championships. Sorry mate, but not embarrassing, disappointed bit proud. Well,
I'm glad you are. But to me, when you're leading

(23:52):
by ten points and you change the way you play
and you deliver a series of aimless kicks, get penalized,
don't take the three points on off it and get
run over to me if I'm an all which of
course I'm not. I would find that embarrassing. All blacks

(24:14):
of old don't lose test matches with a teen point
lead betwenty to go. It doesn't happen. So maybe a
harsh task master. But so gooday Carl, how are you?

Speaker 8 (24:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (24:27):
Good duskie, So mate, I was watching a different dame
to all of you guys. I saw Tommody Williams touched
the ground several times the fussy incident can had already
passed in that there's no way that that was a
north side. So that's that's in itself. The next issue

(24:50):
was Lomax definately shepherded when the try from Cody Taylor.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
Right at the very start.

Speaker 2 (24:59):
I don't thanks any argument overer that, and I think
that's kind of comes back from when the ball was
dropped over the line.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
I think that the referring was a little on a
shoddy side.

Speaker 6 (25:07):
Carla, I'm trying to point out a few other things.
I don't know if any of you guys listen to
nast Water talking to one of the local reporters. I mean,
these guys are they've been playing this game since they're
six years old, you know. I think if we see

(25:29):
anything Jason Ryan was telling us that there wasn't enough experience,
but yet they've put less experience onto the field. I
don't see the same game as you guys.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
Well they I think maybe they when they selected the
team that was may be a ride for their own
back and they said, look, we didn't have the experience
to put on the bench, and our benches suffered a
recent time, so they needed to adjust around that, which
is why this next team, even though injuries have aided
and a bit of what we're seeing, there's more experience

(26:01):
coming off the bench that won't freeze when put under pressure.

Speaker 6 (26:07):
That is true.

Speaker 8 (26:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (26:09):
I mean for me, I think I've been carrying the
front the pack and that's that's just my own point
of view. The two best players from last week, both
of them are broken.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
Now.

Speaker 6 (26:24):
I think the whole thing is just a problem of debt.
That's the biggest problem. And I think when we look
at what's going on right now in the game, what's
happened in Australia and now you know we've got the
same lady running sports here in New Zealand, Mate, it

(26:46):
doesn't look right, doesn't look bright.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
I think that's the beauty though of having Scott Robertson
in that role for four years, knowing what the target
is and then it's the World Cup and as opposed
to being dominant every year except World Cups years, which
is a problem the all Black's head.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
Not too long ago.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
They now understand where they are and he now understands
I've got to work this through. I'll take some losses
on the chin to develop. You just don't think it's
the naturally.

Speaker 3 (27:15):
The people aren't there anymore, mate.

Speaker 6 (27:18):
I think that Wayne Smith was the most dynamic coach ever.
If you look at what he did for rugby in
this country, there is no doubt he set up the
Canterbury situation that carries them for so long. I think

(27:44):
that what we're seeing is the end of those guys.
There are nobody else that have had that experience of
what he brought to the game. That's my point of view.
The only reason blackadd has got so much is because
his dad is a factor in all of this. Was

(28:06):
rock solid, you know, and his.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
Dad was always a big fan of discipline, which I'd
like to say leak more onto that side. Hey, cal
thanks for sharing opinion. Always appreciate it. We won't always
agree that. That's the whole point of talk back. Discuss
different concepts, of different ideas, and you know we might
learn something, right David.

Speaker 10 (28:31):
Yellow, David, Oh sorry, yeah, no, I'm just middle of
cop and tea.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
Sorry you what?

Speaker 2 (28:37):
Put your dinner down, David, talk to me?

Speaker 10 (28:40):
Oh, I am I talking it. Everything's on alone. I'm
not going to burn the house down, so fair enough. No, listen,
I think our centers number thirteen. I think we should
be starting with.

Speaker 12 (28:59):
Well.

Speaker 10 (28:59):
I don't really like Yanni, he died against the ball off.
I mean he was a bloody great winger. But I
think Anton Lennet Brown is their main man there. That's
just my person. I mean, I'm only one of four
and a half million all black coaches here.

Speaker 2 (29:20):
Well, so is it not with Lennard Brown? Hm, is
any more suited to coming off the bench because he's
got the ability to play. Can you can stick him
at center at second five eighth? So he's a lot
more malleable.

Speaker 10 (29:36):
Yeah, I know what you're saying, but start with him.
I mean, and all these guys, guys, you know they
can play eighteen minutes. Christ this chopping and change is
I think they just tend to give it test jumpers
these days like Raffles Bloody take it to himself. He's
a bit of old school.

Speaker 2 (29:55):
But yeah, no, I think that the way the game
has developed, though it's now the twenty three is a
significant That eight and off the bench are just as
significant as the fifteen that South Africa have stolen the
march by the way they approached that.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
And look if you start.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
With Lennard Brown and you know, the inside of the
outside gets busted depending on where you're starting. But he
can move to the other position if necessary, right, so so.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
It could be there.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
But in this case, I think a number of changes
have been made and you cannot make do much.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
There's no control in my experience.

Speaker 10 (30:31):
So I can't think of his name. But who's the
other center? The young fellow has come on? I can't
Billy Proctor.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
B Yeah, I think a lot of people would like
to see. Yeah, his direct game.

Speaker 10 (30:43):
Oh sure he was. He was the best sad in
New Zealand last year. This year and I said, as
Luke Jacobson injured.

Speaker 3 (30:54):
He know he's on the bench.

Speaker 10 (30:57):
Oh sorry, Luke's on the bench here, But why Wilson
sattis there? I'll put him at number eight. Put are
they at seven and even save at six?

Speaker 2 (31:11):
Again? I go back to and David, thanks for your time,
your old school time. You don't need more disrupt There's
already plenty of disruption or tweaking in that twenty three.
Sometimes in other positions there needs to be some consistency
just to help keep the structure as opposed to Lilly

(31:36):
scrambling it. Then you don't know what's actually worked and
what hasn't. What do they talk about in science and
said it before? And it's cool, you know, kind of
a control in your experience. But thanks for your call, David.
More texts and they keep rolling on and I encourage
you too. Standard text charge does apply in nineteen ninety.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
That is z B z B.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
Steve writes Darcy. How refreshing is it that the new
AB coaches give proper answers to questions instead of a
media trained word salad the end of Jason Ryan not short, honest,
fair enough, you said it. I named the team for you, Steve,

(32:18):
Thanks very much for asking. Though another guy here is
still talking about the Canterbury Mafia, saying are the apparent
lack of geographical knowledge by the AB selectors is shocking.
Apparently the country stops at the white puckey and if
you play for the Crusader's form is irrelevant until they
lose their blinkers, the selectors will keep picking the wrong team.

(32:39):
And one last thing, because Elliott Smith's going to join
us from the Republic shortly, Mike writes Darcy Jason talking
Kaka re Satiti's carries.

Speaker 3 (32:49):
Sotutu was the form carrier.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
Thank you very much for your texts, Thanks for your calls.
Up next we'll take a look at the South African
twenty three for the Test match on Sunday morning. Elliott
Smith is our man on the spot. We go to
him in South Africa in about three minutes time. Here
on news Talks, ebrol Away from eight Sports Talk on

(33:33):
the Newstalks AIRB Marcus Light's getting busy on it from
eight through twelve, looking forward to that one.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
It's my company on the way home.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
Quick text before we go to Elliott Smith and the Republic.
My two cents less kids play rugby in New Zealand.
Now the under twenty ones are constantly beaten. Other countries
are taken rugby more seriously. Ab fans get used to
becoming the fourth or fifth in the world. Ouch, it's
going out to Elliott Smith hanging around spring Box naming,

(34:09):
which I believe is a hop, skip and a jump
from your appalatial accommodations.

Speaker 3 (34:14):
Elliott. Welcome to the show, Darcy.

Speaker 13 (34:17):
Good to catch up as always, right.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
So what happened? What's the team looking like?

Speaker 2 (34:20):
I've got it right in front of me and I
can see there have been some changes as well. It's
not only the All Blacks have chopped and changed for
this fixture.

Speaker 8 (34:28):
No, exactly.

Speaker 13 (34:28):
And look the spring Box first and foremost will have
their captain Sexleisi for Saturday nights match local time here
and Sunday morning in New Zealand. A facial fracture he
took against the All Blacks last weekend as a result
of that tackle made by Samkin. I just heard from
Russy Erasmus that it's sort of a nose fracture at

(34:50):
the moment, and See has decided to push himself to
play this weekend. It sounds like he might needed to
get a reset at some point in the future, probably
against He probably take the weeks off against Argentina, but
he's going to play through it this week. He's pretty
confident they can do no the damage. So see I
Calisi is going to give the old schnozz a workout

(35:10):
against the All Blacks. So that's the headline I suppose
of the team. They've changed up plenty else elsewhere as well.
Last week's nineteen combination who I thought were pretty impressive
in Cobas Rhynach and Sasha at Feinberg in Gomezulu, well
for the latter he's on the bench, but Grant Williams
in the familiar phase of Hondre Pollard at nine and

(35:31):
ten this week even It'sabeth back into the run on side.
Peter stephany Toy moves back to the blind side, but
it's the number seven jersey in South African parlance, and
Canaan Moody comes on the right wing and Willie LaRue
at fullback, so he changes a plenty from both signs,
as you say, Darcy, So.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
Tell us about the change at nine and ten and
what triggered or initiated that move after what you said.
They weren't exactly run over, were they last weekend? So
Williams and Pollard, I mean Williams very effective off the bench,
but what's the rationale behind.

Speaker 13 (36:04):
This, do you think, Yeah, I think just a sort
of a rotational thing as well. Hendra Pollard exceptionally good player.
SA should find Berg Gon Miszulu very very good as well.
And I think there's a feeling from Russia Erasmus that
they can add an impact off the bench and Pollard's
sort of direct things for the first sixty or so minutes.

(36:26):
I think it's a horses for courses approach from Russia Erasmus.
I don't think in his mind from what I can
gather just listening to him below before that there's a
pecking order necessarily. It very much feels like he sees
them equal both the Nines and Ten's rumoring Fuff to
clerk out with injury as well, so they've got him
to come back in the mix in terms of their

(36:47):
half backs. But Pollard experienced head feels like it's the
right player for this week. And I guess that Feinberg
and Gobazuli I thought was very very good. But some
of the attack, I think Russia Erasmus just wants to
tidy up a little bit and feels that Pollard might
be the man to pull the strings this week as well.
The other interesting point Darcy is the reverted to a
five to three bench, which is very real, Pour South,

(37:10):
and we're going.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
To ask about that. Just looking to the ass going
hold on, that looks almost traditional.

Speaker 13 (37:16):
Yeah, they have five to three benches is what they've
gone with. So interesting there there's a lot of speculation
that this week they might go to a seven to
one after doing a six to two last week, but
they've gone back to five to three. So Russia Rasma
is doing his best to keep the All Blacks and
the selectors guessing is to what they put out. But
make no mistake, this is a very experienced spring Box side.

(37:37):
I mean you can call on the kind of players
in bringing Pollard back into your run on side. That
shows the kind of experience that you've got a very
very strong, loose forward trio with Kalisi fit again or
still fits and and Peter stated Toy moving back to
his preferred position, and it feels like you don't lose
much by changing around some of these pieces in the

(37:59):
Springbox team, such as the depth that they've built in
recent times as.

Speaker 2 (38:04):
Far as the All Blacks are concerned, because of course
you were covering off both sides in this exchange. That
team came out a few hours ago, and you think
that jumped out at you in particular because there are
again a number of changes there, some of them injury enforced,
some of them not.

Speaker 13 (38:20):
Yeah, plenty plenty of that jumped out Darcy. I guess
you look at the bench and that was where I
was always going to direct my eyes as soon as
the team came out and you see t J. Pettinawer
and Bowden Barrett the I think that's a good move.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
T J.

Speaker 13 (38:32):
Petter and now has played the bulk of his Test
career coming off the bench. He knows that role very
very well, and I think that's probably where he maybe
should have been in recent weeks as well, that you
know he's in the twilight of his career, he's leaving
after the season. That's the bench roll he's perfected and
been so good at for so long. So I would
have put him there on the bench in recent weeks.
I know why they didn't with Ratzima and the inexperience there,

(38:54):
but they've gone for that this week in Boden Barrett
as well. He played that bench roll to a plumb
in both Tests against England, and you know then was
elevated to run on side with Steven Peter Fetz are injured,
but you look back and go away. Actually that was
the bench working exactly how you wanted to and it
hasn't quite worked that way since the other one that
jumps out. You know, obviously injury and force as well.

(39:14):
But Wallace to Tt earning the trust to start a
blindside flanker in against the spring box in Cape Town,
you know, pressure environment. This is his first test start
and it's position that he hasn't played so far this year.
He played all his rugby exclusively at number eight, had
a couple of games for Harvard there at blindside last year.
But this is a real acid test for Wallace to

(39:37):
Tt and the possibility what he might be able to
add to this loose forward going forward.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
But I really like it.

Speaker 13 (39:42):
I think the All Blacks have needed another ball carrying
in the Titan recent times to help out Ardie sav.
I think even Blackhead has been exceptional. I was an
advocate for Ardie sav moving back to open side and
a TT at eight, but with the injuries and things
like that, they've put in a walle it's on the blindside.
Sam Can remains an open side in Ardie sav at

(40:02):
number eight. I think it's a It's a big opportunity
for Speci. He was to stand acclaim on the state
of Claim rather than this All Blacks team.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
What does this say, Ali Smith about summer Penny Fee.
Now he was knowing that the instrumental last week, but
this is he's been sat right back down again.

Speaker 13 (40:20):
Yeah, I think exactly that. And I think we probably
haven't seen him at test level and do what he's
done at super rugby level. I think the jury is
still out for him on his test prospects. Last week
coming off the bench, was hoping to add impact penalizes,
just didn't quite get into the game, so I think.
And he hadn't played a role in the previous couple

(40:41):
of TC either, so I think it's a bit of
a work in progress with any Fee now may just
need to go back and get some NBC under his
belt maybe than play the bledders Low. It's going to
be interesting to see what they do there. The other
one is well Darcy Dolden Papa LETI fit again, not
in the twenty three. He's been the starting seven for
most of the tests so far this year. Had a
thumb injury last week that ruled him out and then

(41:02):
he hasn't in the twenty three this week, which I
think is also an interesting selection with Luke Jacobs and
are prioritized over the bench, so a real question mark,
I suppose over what they want to see over Dalton
over the next week, while as well to get the
All Blacks Jusy back for him.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
Last sixty seconds Elliott, what's the general atmosphere being like
in Cape Town? What's the talk being like around this
exchange spring Box the South Africa. I'm presuming that they're
very happy with their side, but they have expectations that
the word might turn.

Speaker 12 (41:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (41:34):
Look, I think the spring Box very complimentary before around
the All Blacks and what they expect from them, and
very complimentary of the efforts last week. I think they
expect another physical and tough test match and Russia. Rasmuds
was a quick to point today he said they won,
but it was you know, it was a tough test
against the All Blacks and especially back to Sea Levely.

(41:54):
Things that might help the All Blacks as well and
in their first game at d h L Stadium in
Cape Town with the old Newlands no longer in operation.
So I think the sense they expect the All Blacks
to come at them hard and reference to the Argentina
loss at Wellington, they bounce back and thresh them the
week after. So they're expecting a bit of an All
Blacks backlash in Cape Town this weekend.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
And we're expecting one.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
How I hell A call from yourself three o'clock on
