Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildegrave
from News Talks it Be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
And it's after India. We go now with the well,
I can only use one word, really, the shambles that's
happening with the Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand.
We go to senior assistant editor of Sports Star, Shanna Cherrier,
who's over there watching it unfold. Shine, welcome to the program.
Can you just cover off what's happened today, let alone

(00:35):
yesterday today? Because it looks what's a mess, isn't it?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (00:40):
Absolutely, I mean it's like you said, right, it's in
the shambles because we are in the second day of
the Test match and we still haven't had a toss.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
The biggause outfielders war.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Now they are trying to dig up one pund one
corner of the outfield and they're trying to instill fresh
grass so that it still holds up.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
And you know, it's a mess, and by the looks
of it, it doesn't.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
There's no indication that we'll have our game today for
show and tomorrow and day after we don't know yet
whether the match can go ahead or whatever. But yeah,
what happened. To put things into a little bit of perspective.
It did rain and bits and pieces. Last week it
was a little drainy in this part of the world.
But since yesterday and there before there were you know,

(01:25):
very very very short spells of sharp but strong spells
of sharer. And this stadium which is being you know,
which was suspended by the BCCI two time seventeen, doesn't
have that in a facility. It doesn't have the state
of art infrastructure and obviously the drainage is not up
to the mark. So obviously with this little bit of rain,

(01:45):
the entire outfield is soggy and and we have missed
out on two almost two days of testing.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
So just explain there to Yan. They got taste status
taken away because it didn't have a warr and of fitness.
It wasn't fit for purpose. So what changed? How did
it suddenly get the nod from on presents naming the
b CCI.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
No, actually, so this ground was suspended by the b
CC in twenty seventeen, not for the ground grated stuff.
It was suspended because it hosted some unaffiliated tournaments by
the b CCI. So ever since it was more of
the more on the anti corruption grounds that it was suspended. Okay,
and now this this ground officially is not under any

(02:29):
local state associations. It is managed by the Britainoid Development
Authority and they are the one, I mean, they look
after the ground and as far as Afghanistan is concerned,
they had requested b CCI for an alternative home venue
and whatever we heard, whatever we know and whatever. Mister
the CEO of the Afghanistan Triket Board had told me

(02:50):
earlier that BCC had given.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Them two grounds this time around.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
One was this facility and the other one was in
campor in the Green Park in campor the Kanpore ground
obviously can't be used because India is scheduled to play
a Test match against Bangladesh later this month, so obviously
that is out of bounds.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
So the pass and Triket Board was given an option.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
To play here and they chose here because this used
to be their home until four years ago before before
the COVID pandemic struck. So and this closed, uh, it's
it's in closed vicinity to the national capital of Delhi
and the airport's in here everything, so obviously the team
shows here. So and now the there they had to
sign a member of memor and of understanding between ACB

(03:33):
and the Retaduct Prede Development Authority.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
So that's now between the between the two years.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
So what happens next. I don't know if this taste
is actually going to go ahead and well we'll talk
about that shortly. But as far as being recompaigns for
this or where does this go? Who's faults this? Who's
hands does this?

Speaker 4 (03:53):
This is?

Speaker 3 (03:54):
This is?

Speaker 4 (03:55):
This is clearly on the this the owner's falls definitely
on the local management authorities who are the brown brown people.
I mean, I think, going by whatever we have understood
over the last couple of days, there's acute miss management
because obviously you have to understand that the CB people
they are not based in India, so they come on
a two to tour basis and they coordinate with the
local authorities and they are as far as the MoU's concern,

(04:16):
they are the ones who need to look after and
ensure that the cities are correct. And since this ground
doesn't hold any international ticket matches, it hasn't conducted one
in the last four and a half years, so the
overall infrastructure is in the shambles.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
So going forward it is highly unlikely that we'll.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Have a play for at least today, and maybe it's
the first surf of tomorrow. If the wead that remains
the same, and if there's against, it's agains it against,
If it against us brizzling out slight slight, heavy showers,
then you know, one wonders what happens because at this
point in time it is not in a state to
hold any you know what I mean, you know, hold
in any sort of game, at least for today because

(04:54):
as I as we speak.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
One corner and the midwicket as there has been dug up.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
They are bringing in fresh patches of glass from the
practice for city and putting them here. This is not
an ideal you know, picture or ideal advertisement for Test
match ticket, but it is what it is.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
It's insane. I I don't believe, when I've seen the
pectures coming back provided by yourself of Twitter, that they
could even even consider playing any Test cricket there. It
looks out now dangerous. I'm shine a chariot, joins us.
He's a senior assistant editor for Sports Stuff. Right from now,

(05:31):
I'd say just pull the plug, but it looks dangerous.
You've been out there walking around. You don't want to
play on that.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Do you?

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yeah, and and and you know what happened. You know,
the sad bit is when the in the on the
eve of the game UH.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
You know, if Rahaim Zadran suffered an ankil injury and
he was ruled out of the tournament, he'll be missing
out on the UH one day as scheduled in later
this month. So so you know, it also puts the
pressure pressure on the players because they obviously the New
Zealand has five matches, five test matches on the trot
after this in in this part of the world, they're

(06:04):
playing Sri Lanka and followed by one FEMAX series against India,
and that's obviously a w World Test Championships final spotters
on the line, so nobody would obviously want to risk it.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
So I mean, going by these conditions are not.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
An important part is that the teams neither Afghanistan nor
New Zealand have turned up to the ground today.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
They're still at the hotel.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
So that is an indication, like you know, I mean
that that that that has a clear indication that you know,
things are not fit for the players to even even
train here.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
China we took before about the possibility of another ground,
but that was being used for a taste mench involving India,
but not for a few weeks. Is it strange that
they weren't given the opportunity to go there and play
because I'd suggest it'll be a bit bit of conditions, right.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
No, I think, I think, I think whatever I heard
from the AGASA officials uh yesterday of the record, of course,
they were telling us as a chat that when they
showed the ground, they were also not really sure about
the logistical issues of Campoor, whether because it doesn't have
a five star hotel and all that facity. So they
were also not very sure that they can have host
the match in Campos. So it was not business his
fault at all. I mean, they were also given the

(07:15):
option and this guy's also didn't want to go ahead
in Carport because they thought with a lot more facilities
here the national capital prog at a close up proximity
some of the five star hotels around, so this Returnoida
will be a better option than Carpos.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
So that was one of the reasons.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
I think I think they chose here. But yeah, but
you also need to keep something in mind and a
lot of local tournaments. This is the affiliated tournaments are
happening around that time. Local leagues are happening, ye know.
Lucknow and there are the own the centers where Afghanistan
had earlier had their home venues, so it's not that
they also had a plenty of options to go around.

(07:49):
And it's also peak you know, monsoon in some parts
of the country, so the options are actually limited.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
But yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (07:57):
It is also a little strange that when it rains
in this part of the world, why do you have
a testmach around this time.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
I was just gonna ask why would you do there?
And a mom soon is wad you mentioned that? Because surprised?

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Is it? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (08:11):
Yeah, absolutely absolutely, I mean that that that that game
as us a surprise for a lot of us.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
But yeah, I did. I think they have to go
by the FTP and whatever.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
So yeah, because if if if I remember correctly, earlier
uh Afganastani scheduled to play I think Bangladesh they had
proposed uh huh limited over series and end of July
and early August that at the same ground, but that
was called off. Bangladesh didn't have the you know, the
benefit Bangladesh's calendar, so it is called off.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
So but now this series, this not this team was agreed.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
I mean this this game was you know, I didn't
say another chaste mature Greater Noida for quite some time.
And and finally, Shannon, thanks so much for taking the
time to speak with this time. Wise, what happens how
long before they do pull the pen on this next year?
What are the state of play the conditions of for

(09:06):
this taste.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
I don't think there's any hard and fast rules in
terms of when they can call it off. It obviously
depends on the ground stuff and the match referee. They
have to eventually take a call.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
And as we speak, I.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Can see some of the support staff of New Zealand
there have I hear they are taking a close look
at the outfields and U and I think they'll have
a word with the curators and the other stuff also.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
So it's if the owners is obviously on the match
referee now he has to.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Take a decision and maybe in consultation with the ground
staff and obviously the two captains and kick a call.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
I mean maybe we have to wait for another day
or so.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Wow, something else And honestly, those those pictures, is said,
as they're almost comical, what's going on there in the middle,
but look so it is. Shana Cheriot, thank you so
much for joining us, seeing your assistant editor for Sports Star,
the pleasures being ours. Look after yourself and I feel
for you suffering the bottom of this taste, mate, for

(10:05):
as long as it goes.
