Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk ZEDB six past seven.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Very good evening to you, Welcome along to Sports Talk
Adam Cooper and the chair for Piney. Tonight's a pleasure
to be with you. Thanks for your company. Well here
we are again reflecting on an All Blacks win I think,
a scare that was far too close for comfort against
the Wallabes and that Bleaterslow Cup opener on Saturday nights
(00:34):
Early's a few things to be discussed, I think as
we look at selections and the way forwards with one
test to go at home for twenty twenty four for
the All Blacks and of course ahead of a very
tough end of year tour that will feature the likes
of England, Ireland and France. So what do we need
to see from the All Blacks and the final home
(00:55):
test of twenty twenty four and Wellington this weekend and
just a moment will chat to the New Zealand Herald
Rugby correspondent Liam Napier, but would love to hear your
thoughts as well, especially on what we do at first
five time for Damien McKenzie. Maybe to be pulled back
and have some more experience in the number ten jersey,
the likes of Bowden Barrett's. We'll discuss that through the
(01:16):
hour and get Liam's thoughts on that as well. Also
today Sri Lanka have needed less than four overs to
claim both the black Caps final two wickets to wrap
up a sixty three run win Test and Test one
and Gaul so yep Chilunka get the honors. I think
we had a very small glimmer of hope, didn't we
on what could happen on this final day for the
(01:37):
black Caps with Rutch and Revenger there in the nineties
not to be. Andrew Allison will join us later on
the hour for his assessment and how do we rate
some individual brilliants up against the overall performance of the
team and where do we go for Test number two
with any possible changes. Looking forward to chatting to orders
a little bit later on in this hour, and Piney
isn't here, but don't fret. We will have your Monday
(01:59):
Night Power rankings just before eight. Look forward to that that.
I'm at a call us O eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty. The text is nine. Great to have your
company on Sports Talk this evening.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Na gets it in, Savia gets it out, catch it
over the touchline. The All Blacks hang on to win
the match. The All Blacks hang on to the Bledislow
three tries in the opening sixteen minutes and then got
the fright of their life, the All Blacks thirty one
Australia twenty eight Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Three points in it in the end, far too close
for comfort for many, and the All Blacks do get
the bledders Low Cup for yet another year, the twenty
second straight. But still plenty of questions around this team's
performance for twenty twenty four as a whole, and where
the coaching staff should go this weekend for their final
chance at home before embarking on a pretty grueling end
(02:50):
of year tour. Look forward to debating some of the
possible selections with you through the hour, but first let's
head to Wellington and then New Zeland. Herald Rugby correspondent
Liam Napier joins us now, Liam, evening to you. You've
obviously just returned back following both sides in Sydney. You're
with the All Blacks in Wellington today. What was the
biggest talking point around the All Blacks camp today among
(03:14):
everything else that's going on at the moments.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
Yeah, evening coops. Great to be back in the nation's
capital your hometown. Went out to Upper Art today and
saw Wayne Smith floating around. I think it's his first
time in camp with the All Blacks. He's the I
think his official title is performance coach with the b
and Black Ferns. So interesting to see him flowing around.
No form what day on Jeordy Barrett, but he's certainly
(03:40):
out this week with his medial ligament injury. He had
scans today, so we'll hear later in the week about
that and then I guess while the All Blacks have
locked away to Bedslow Cup, there's certainly no shortage of motivation.
Everything from the Wellington Hudoo having won here for six
years could be Sam came into j Pennaro's last home
tests and of course the last quarter second half failings.
(04:05):
Five tests in a row. Your Blacks haven't scored a
point beyond the fifty second minute, so plenty for us
SKO Robinson's meant to improve on.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, exactly, and that was obviously a big talking point
straight after the game as well. From your perspective, how
much of the All Blacks and the coaching staff worried
about this. What kind of either poker faces or genuine
answers have they given in the last out of twenty
four to forty eight hours around that, that final twenty
minutes of games.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Yeah, I think poker face is probably a good way
to put it. They're certainly projecting optimism and no sense
of panic as such, but it is an unsolvable curse
for the All Blacks these last quarter failings, whether it's
the bench, whether it's blowing am for opportunities. They had
the Wallabies on the rack and Sydney led twenty one nil,
(04:53):
twenty eight to seven and then twenty eight to fourteen
at halftime and should have really blown them away but didn't.
So finishing those attacking chances is a very pressing concer.
But you know, Jason Hollands speaking today about backing their
skill sets, continuing to be positive and Will Jordan also
(05:17):
talking about, you know, things like refining support play and
just continuing to attack. But it is a major issue
because we've seen Neil Blacks blow big leads against Argentina
here in Wellington, the spring Box and Johannesburg. They had
ten point lead and then again in Sydney, so it
(05:38):
is a major issue for them to try and solve and.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Hearing Scott Robertson used the term mercurial to describe Damien
McKenzie's performance. Is that a sign that has consistent backing
and confidenced him and him so far this year is
possibly starting to wane a little bit?
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah, I think it could be Coops. Boden Barrett was
late withdrawal last week Wildorne City, only had about two
hours prior to kickoff, noticed that he was switching from
the wing to start at fallback. But by all accounts
there was a bit of sickness in the All Blacks camp,
but Boden is said to have recovered, so I wouldn't
(06:16):
be surprised if we saw a change at ten. I
don't expect to see widespread changes from the All Blacks
this week. I think they haven't put out the performance
that they want, that everyone expects from them, so I
don't think they will feel comfortable enough to have widespread
experimentation as such, even though the blood is locked away.
But ten is a major talking point, isn't it. Damien
(06:37):
has been backed consistently this year started all eight tests
and hasn't stamped as authority on that position. It's fair
to say there's been questions about this game management as goalkicking,
which was actually very good in Sydney, but there was
the audacious flick path and just the game management in
the final quarter. I think the All Blacks had about
(06:58):
thirty eight percent of territory in the second half and
that contributed to them being under pressure and conceding too
late yell cards. So if the All Blacks are going
to make a change at ten, if they do want
to see some other options, whether that is Boden Barrett,
maybe Harry Plummer, Stephen Perfetter is injured, you'd think it
(07:19):
has to be now before they head north for the
end of the tour. They do play Japan before confronting
England Island and France up north, but if they're going
to have another look, you would think it has to
happen sooner rather than later.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
On the other side of the scale, could they benefit
from giving Damian McKenzie another shot here, build that confidence
before they head to Europe.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Yeah, it's a fair points. I guess the more time
he spends at ten, the more backing he has from
the coaches. The more comfortable he should be in that role.
He hasn't prior to this year had a sustained run
for the All Blacks at tennis. Of course played there
for the Chiefs, but Richard Muonger was the first choice
(08:02):
ten you know, for the All Blacks, and there's also
of talk that he's going to return potentially next year,
if not next year, of the year after. So every
minutes Damien gets of experience as incredibly valuable. So I'm
sure he'll want to retain those rains and continue to improve.
(08:22):
But we've seen elsewhere, you know, there's been players punished
to a degree for like a form or eras Riquewane
was dropped and brought back. Well Jordan you know, started
one test at fallback and then was pushed back to
the wing before the late change last week. Others have
fallen out of favor, the likes of Dalton Papa Lee.
(08:43):
So Scott Robinson has shown that he can use selection
to try and evoke performance, but just not with Damien
McKenzie to day.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah, and on the other side the positives, obviously Wallace
the TT court is at Artema very much the ones
you know, newb's on the team being credited for great
consistent performances in the last month or side. Do you
expect them to continue to be given the time in
the saddle again to just build that confidence, you'd think so.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Ethan Blackheader is back fit. He's been out for the
past two Tests with a hamstring injury. So there's great
depth in the loose forwards and it would be very
harsh to drop Wallace the way he's playing. And Cortez
at Artima was for me the best All Black on
the park in Sydney. His distribution, his sniping game, his
(09:34):
defense is kicking or exceptional, so I think he's really
growing into his work. You've got cam royguards Hurricanes halfback
who's obviously missed this whole season in camp well the
All Blacks this year. I think he'll play for Conte's
Monaco next week before possibly joining the All Blacks for
the nd year tour. So it is really the youth
(09:55):
that shine here for the All Blacks at the moment.
Tupu Vis another one that's playing out of his skin.
He was one of the best performers in South Africa,
so I think there's a real case to be made
that Scott Robinson needs to promote this youth and back
them more because he's been a wee bit reluctant to
do that. And it is as you say that, like
(10:15):
the Tt and Ratima, that have really been the shining
lights in recent weeks.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
And what's the mindset from Australia crossing the ditch for
this return test? They got so close. Was it disappointment
from them or was there more encouragement you felt the
sentiment around them post the game as to just how
close they got to the All Blacks.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
It was interesting to hear Joe Schmitt talk postmatch. He
was a realist, I would suggest he felt that bill
Blacks would have should have been ahead by a lot
more had they taken those chances we talked about, but
he was heartened by the character and the fight back
that his team showed. It couldn't quite get over the line.
(10:55):
Bill Blacks had some very big turnovers on their own
line to escape and the final wall turnover to save
their blushes. Really, but look, it was a vastly crew
of Wallaby's performance on the whole. They were blown away early,
came back late, and it's easy to forget the week
before they suffered their second worst defeat in history against
(11:17):
the Pumas in Argentina. I think it was the most
points they had ever conceded, sixty seven. They conceded sixty
four points in fifty minutes and only scored three. So,
you know, to respond like that on home soil and
get within three points of the All Blacks, I think
they will take a lot of heart from that, but
they've got to back it up now be those not
(11:37):
on the line. But there's certainly everything to play for
for the Wallabies.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah, and just finally, Liam, you mentioned obviously at the
start that t J. Pettinata Sam Kane, that final test
for them does loom. At some point, you know, does
that get made public? I guess during this week if
it is likely the last game in the Black Jersey,
we know it would probably be their last on New
Zealand soil. When does that kind of picture become a
bit clearer.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
I don't think any of those things that we discussed
public because I doubt that those decisions have been made.
There are some very big decisions for the Blicks to make.
As you cast a head beyond this game to the
India tour with as we mentioned cam Rougo coming back
and someone like Peter Luckeye waiting in the wings. You'd
(12:21):
have to think both those guys will be on the
India Tour squad and which is normally enlarged, which does
give you a degree of flexibility. But this will be
Sam Kine and TJ's last home game. Sam Kine, provided
he plays, will play one hundredth tests, so a massive
occasion for the former captain. But yeah, there is a
(12:42):
chance that those guys get squeezed out by the future.
So there's some big decisions for Scut Robertson to make,
but I doubt whether they've actually made them to this point.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Liam always good to chat mate. Thanks for your time
here on New stok zp and enjoy your week in
the Capitol.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
Yes coops anytime.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Cheers Liam Napier with us Leni Zealand Herald's main rugby
correspondence here on Sports Tour. So interesting, isn't it The
term mercurial I found really interesting from Scott Robertson yesterday,
kind of describing Damien McKenzie hardly the greatest endorsement of
his number ten in the wash up of the team's
mad survival act, you know, and you just look at it,
(13:24):
twenty one nearly head after fifteen minutes twenty eight to
fourteen up at the break. There's absolutely no way the
side should have been forced to frantically fight at the
death for that eventual thirty one twenty eight win. The
finger naturally gets pointed at your playmaker, right when for
a fifth straight game your team doesn't score any points
in the final twenty minutes of a test. In this case,
(13:46):
the final points came in the forty fifth minute. We
know that McKenzie's game management has been found out while
under pressure this year, although at the same time some
of his brilliant individual attacking moments are always the very
first on an All Blacks highlights. Reil and I think
it was a shame for Damien mcain. Arguably his best
(14:07):
moment of Saturday's Test was sparking the eighty meter breakout
for that quarter as at Are to Matri, but was
subsequently pulled back for a forward pass. And we know
that so far Scott Robertson's remained defiantly loyal to McKenzie
through the peaks and troughs of the rugby year. Any
of troughs they've gone through, but the use of the
word mercurial and admitting that things are still a work
(14:30):
in progress just makes me wonder is a change likely
for Saturday's return Blederslow Cup test in Wellington? Is that faith?
Is that confidence and backing running out? It's an interesting
balancing act for the coaches here with the Bledders, though
already locked away, the team's pretty much playing for pride,
for credibility, for you and for a strong launching pad
(14:54):
for the end of year too. I actually think giving
Damien McKenzie another shot in the ten jersey is the
right move here. A healthy again Boone and Barrett would
oviously be the main placement. We already know what he's
capable of. We know what he can bring should he
be required to front at pervot on the end of
(15:15):
year tour. So in the meantime, why not give Damien
McKenzie one final chance to respond to the increased scrutiny
push for that eighty minute performance. And I don't think
you can deny that an improved Damien McKenzie from where
he is now, with one more game under his belt,
with maximum game time and increased confidence from not being
(15:36):
dropped would be more of an asset in just a
couple of months time, when the All Blacks are heading
to London, to Dublin and Paris. Would the All Blacks
actually get anything out of dropping Damien McKenzie right now?
I don't think so. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten
eighty is the number, though the text is nine two
nine two. Love to hear from you. Plenty to talk
around the All Blacks, any other ideas on the game.
(15:59):
Love to hear from you. Have a great discussion this
hour twenty two past seven. Back after this here on Sports.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Talk, You've got the breakdown on Sports Talk call eight
hundred News Talk said.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Twenty five past seven, Adam Cooper with you tonight. We
are talking the All Blacks. Obviously, one more chance to
impress on home soil this year before heading on a
pretty grueling and challenging end of year tour. So a
few selections I think to be debated between now and
the team naming on Thursday. Obviously plenty of thoughts around
what is causing this lackluster final quarter consistently for the
(16:38):
All Blacks. There's you know, chat of the week bench,
there's slight imbalance maybe in the back threes, the back rows,
some poor goalkicking. Didn't see too many mistakes from Damien
McKenzie with one hundred percent the other night, and then
obviously his performance running to cut it in those final
(16:59):
twenty minutes of games is also coming under the microscope.
So can you get your gauge on where you feel
this all black side sit heading into test number two
of they blitters, low cup kine, good evening.
Speaker 6 (17:09):
Mate, good, good coops. Can I just say, first of
all this is bloody good for rugby mate? Really the
four games that are just awesome? Man? What about the
argies those their first two tries was was just unreal?
Just the war handling and what about public down the
silid big mat and how he scores a try and
(17:31):
then he sort of gives old been Dixon a bit
of a bit of a shower, you know. And I
was watching that quite too, but thanks to the all
blacks man. First, first of all, less to talk about
the elephant, right idea? Was it to take it to Wellington? Yeah? Well,
(17:52):
of all the places in New Zealand you guys could
have thought of to go, you going back to Wellington?
I mean all the all their bad losses happened in Wednington.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Yes, it's a pretty worrying, pretty worrying record, isn't it.
Kind of well what twenty seventeen, twenty sixteen, or yeah,
very long time since they they want a test in
the capitol.
Speaker 6 (18:13):
Wow, all right, unreal when you think about it. But no, mate,
I think I said before, I think they the making
Will Jordan working together. They've just seen the alarm bells
through the defense line, especially when they come around from
the back. They're so slippery, both of them, Jordan, Will
(18:34):
Jordan's a bit of a throwback to Colinae. Soon he
hits the camp eachs hits the ammad DNA and he's
just gone. He's awesome to watch. Actually, both of them together.
I think it'd be unjust sort of split them at
the moment. And as you say, Cortez, Ratma, what a
little tiger they do. They like a little pit bull way.
I mean, you lose Aaron Smith and then this dude
(18:55):
comes out of nowhere, tough as nails too, you know,
and he's only young, but he's solid as hell, and
he's the way he smashed called of Betty and I
think a couple in the South African game. He stopped
Big Malcolm Marks about five meters out and everyone talks
about testing Colby's bump off on Scott part. But but
CORTI has stopped Big Malcolm markx five meters out from
(19:17):
score to dry. So he's a tough man and he's
he's on every time he plays. I wouldn't mind seeing
Hope and Todd, Noah, Hop and Todd coming half off
the bench because he's a sneaky little sniper around that
you run around the rack, say and together, I think
at this time to give the newbies a bit of
a shot. You know, Al'm a chiefs men and alb
(19:38):
has been awesome you know, over the years. But I'd
love to see Brocter ross the Brent bench. We're actually
given a shot at twelve. Right now. I think it's
flotten perfectly at twelve with him and Reeks working together,
you know, and keeping d making cortis there. Caleb's got
a steak because Caleb's just gone fire. Caleb Klarke, you know,
(19:59):
I mean unreal and there's a bit of a you know,
bit of a a juggle face will tell you in
sebber Reese and pretty in other Worlds and still around
because that dude done real too. But the forward pack went, Yes,
he's definitely he's a second coming obviously only Lowaki in
he Yeah, he's been awesome. Then Sam Kane, you know,
(20:23):
the thing is of the Sami when he finishes, I
reckon they should get him in this defense coach, because
he's actually quite inspiring, you know, because they know that
there's one guy that's going to bleed for their black
jersey at Sam Kane, So why not why not get
him in there somewhere in the defense side as a
sort of inspiration to the team. More so because when
(20:44):
they look at him, you know, you know, he's one
of those guys that you know, he doesn't say much,
but he just threw the shows in his actions and
the way he bleeds for the Dizzy. So I think
I think if he had been acid in the All
Black management, especially on the defense as a coach assistant coach.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Yeah, you're right, Kane, I agree. I mean you can debate,
you know, with the Sam Kange warrants the number seven jersey.
I think he does at this very moment in time.
But you know, regardless, you can't fault that presence that
he clearly has brought back to this team and the
experience he holds, the passion for the jersey, and yeah,
maybe that is an option for him down the track.
He's obviously off to Japan at the end of the year,
(21:24):
but certainly as someone worthy of keeping in the environment.
He was obviously a part of the environment I think
when the All Blacks were here preparing for the England
Tests at the start of the year, when there was
a bit of uncertainty around his future, and then here
he was fit again and back as a major and
important contributor to this All Blacks team. Thanks to you
call Cain, Carl.
Speaker 7 (21:43):
Good evening, Yeah gooda. How are you doing, Adam?
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Yeah good, thanks, how are you hey?
Speaker 7 (21:49):
Yeah good good, Hey, I'd be dropping d mac give
gifty guy from the Blues to crag Harry Plumber.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Yeah, pretty excited enough, pretty excited after a couple of minutes, didn't.
Speaker 7 (22:02):
He Yeah, oh that was a bit like he gets
a couple of minutes, Did he touched the ball? You
should have been on there, you know, long before. He
was the form ten right throughout the Super Super season,
totally outplayed them in the final and g just that
(22:25):
last caller and knew a little bit waxing lyrical about
Sam Kine. Hey, he's a good player, but far out
he fell off that tackle, didn't even when that Australian
guy scored. That was soft as from the you know
that's Gee. I can remember there was a Hurricanes guy.
Oh Gee, IM just trying to think blindside flanker, very good,
(22:47):
very good player fell off one tackle in a in
a tour match at the end of year. Tour boy,
they dropped him like a hot break. I don't know,
we're just getting soft on this, allowing these sort of
mistakes and not Gee changing these guys or or is
Sam the best we've got? I don't know. Yeah, I
(23:07):
certainly don't think's the best we've got. Give someone else
a crack worse than them.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Well exactly, and you think now is the right like
can they actually get much out of dropping Damien McKenzie
now knowing that he is in the stocks for the
interview tour and there's no there's no denying rather drop him?
Speaker 7 (23:24):
Would would you rather drop him?
Speaker 8 (23:25):
What?
Speaker 7 (23:26):
When when we're lining up against who is it the
Irish or the French? It's true, isn't this the best time?
To blood someone like Harry Plumber, or would you rather
wait till G. D. Mack hasn't performed again? Sorry, Harry,
you're up against France. Oh okay, yeah, Well I'd argue that.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
We know that Boden Barrett is probably the one for
those tough tests that would slot into ten if need be.
We know what he's capable of. Would we actually get
anything out of having Damien McKenzie with less game time
unless it's less confidence, probably from being dropped by by
making a change this week?
Speaker 7 (24:02):
Welly, aren't you flogging a dead horse's head? A fair
crack at it, isn't he? Yeah? No, fa, Yeah, I
just think he's had a fear Craik. Good Harry Plumber
a crek.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
No, I totally agree with you, Carl. I think Harry
Plumber has earned his chance, and you know, maybe we'll
see him obviously sort of through sheer luck. Was was
given a chance on the bench to come on for
a couple of minutes last weekend, and who knows he
might have impressed enough to be given a tilt on
the bench again for this week one hundred and eighteen eighty.
If you'd like to join the discussion, Graham. Good evening.
Speaker 8 (24:36):
Gooda Adam, how are you good?
Speaker 6 (24:38):
Good to hear from you.
Speaker 9 (24:39):
Long time since we spoke.
Speaker 8 (24:40):
I know, while you worked down in christ here's many
years ago, even though you're Wellington, but you're backing Wellington there,
aren't you.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Yeah, I am, but no fond memories of a couple
of years down there.
Speaker 8 (24:50):
Yes, good on you. No, you're honorary cant everyone for
a year, No, no doubt. The All Blacks. Yeah, that
last guy made some good points. I mean, I really
think that Will Jordan has to stay at Fallback to
start with, don't. I can't see them like I think
of the I just really, like Caine said in the
(25:11):
first all the start of the program, yeah, I mean,
he was just so good at Fallback, and I like,
I think he's the long term there and the first
five eighths. Yeah, I sort of take that. I mean,
Mackenzie does highlights real brilliance like he does for the Chiefs,
but often, and this happened in the final last year
(25:32):
and this year against the Crusaders last year and this
year against the Blues, he does make crucial errors at times,
and that's the problem there. Wait till the end of
the year tour. I mean I can imagine, yeah, or
you bring in Baden Barrett he's a no, we'll do something,
and you're Harry Plummer, who I wouldn't be upset if
they gave him a shout. I don't think hopefully Richie
(25:54):
Maloney comes back, to be honest, but I think germs,
that's not happening this week. So yeah, i'd like I'd
like that sort of that that change made the forwards
obviously most of them will well, no, maybe I think
they'll probably make a couple of changes there. I mean
they've been rather conservative Adham so but I think it's
(26:16):
time to give somebody else, you know, a couple of
other players a chance because I think the end of
year tour there's a big gap now and some of
them has to come back, might play Bunnies Cup because
they're short of rugby, but they need to possibly give
two or three players a chance. Was not with the
all of time left to the play again, but it
(26:39):
was a great game on Saturday. I think the Australians showed,
you know, very admirable steel coming back the way they
did it after their first half.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Yeah, no, totally. It was very exciting Graham, and you know,
I almost had memories of that year two thousand tests.
So the all that got three quick tries and then
the Wallabes fought back, and then it was a bit closer,
and it was hard to predict, and it took much
close for comfort though on Saturday, just gone, thanks for
you call Graham. Good to hear from you. Tim got
a couple of minutes evening to you.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
Kin occasionally right or in fact often usually makes sense.
But are you kidding that Sam Kine as a defensive coach?
What he's more of a flagman to go? Here's the
try line. Yes, he believes he bleeds for the jersey,
but only does he defend well when he's got a
strapping number six right and a blockbusting number eight. That
(27:32):
that was. Can you find me a worse tackle by
a loose forward in recent history that gifted that try?
Speaker 7 (27:43):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (27:44):
I can't argue with you, Tim.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
So other question is right, why cantabs who have screamed
and begged for Robertson to come in? Where are they now?
What has he done to ever improve on Foster? Nothing?
Foster was a gift to world rugby in terms of
okay promoted Argentina b Ireland beat US. We started losing
(28:09):
all sorts of teams in order, which made World Rouge
be much more competitive. Well done for us. What's Robertson
done better than that? In terms of contributing for the
All Blacks? I don't see it. I really don't. Where's
our hope, Cain? Where is it?
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Yep, there you go to. I appreciate your call, and yes,
I think there are a lot of questions around Scott
Robertson and what he has done so far. We're heading
towards the final test of the Rugby Championship and you
can't really look at the year so far for the
(28:48):
All Blacks and say anything on the whole has improved
in twenty twenty four from last year. Wouldn't go as
far as to say things have necessarily gone backwards, but
we've almost got more questions than answers and we're two
thirds of a way of the way through the international year.
(29:08):
So selections which could be interesting come Thursday morning and
then the game on Saturday. The Bleederslow Cup slightly Lere's
pressure on now that the Bledderslow has been one, but
certainly credibility pride on the line for one last time
on home soil in a topsy turvy twenty twenty four
(29:28):
year for the All Blacks will be interesting. Which range
tacked a little bit now and let's talk cricket. Black
Caps have wrapped up Test number one with a loss
in Sri Lanka. The hosts needed less than four overs
this morning their time to claim both of the black
Cats final two wickets to wrap up a sixty three
(29:50):
run win in Test one. It's got to Andrew Orlison,
our cricket guru here at news talks. He'd be orders
well around now, we thought we'd be maybe still watching
a bit of a black Caps fight back, but not
to be on this Monday evening.
Speaker 9 (30:03):
Well, that's right, coups. I think we will probably hope
that we'd be sitting the maybe in a feet up
in front of the fire or whatever and munching if
you you know, good he's out of the fridge or
something in watching great competitive Test cricket at the end.
But just disappointing I suppose that Ravendra was lost so
early in the day. Really the key to their whole
the numa for one of a better term in you
(30:25):
know we're getting out for ninety two, and that left
New Zealand pretty much short. I mean, I think they're
always going to be struggling there on that goal wicket
on the final day given its nature for turning, and
the Sri Lankan spinners didn't disappoint in that regard for
their fan base. So yeah, it was a tricky one
and I think I think just in the history with
(30:47):
Gaul over time, just two teams have chased over two
hundreds in that time. I think it was a freakish
Pakistan before was getting three forty four in twenty twenty two.
I think Sri Lanka against New Zealand back in twenty
nineteen with two sixty eight. But other than that New
Zealand chasing two seventy five, it was it was going
to be a tough art.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
And over all, how do you sort of assess the performance?
Though there obviously some individual moments of brilliance will I
Rock shining again with the ball, ajas Ptel's heroics yesterday
and obviously Ruts and Ravender with the bat, But the
overall what kind of assessment do you give the Black
Caps for the fight they put on?
Speaker 9 (31:21):
Yeah, I think it was promising for each of those
three factors that you mentioned there. Of course Ravender getting
ever so closely he hears played five times at No.
One's in a score of Test century. I'll get another opportunity,
of course in the second Test, away from Columbo staying
with Gaul. But I thought there was a couple other
elements as well. I mean, I thought the banting, for instance,
in the first and things was pretty solid, but just
(31:43):
no one really going on with it and nailing that down.
If you think that Tom Watham top scoring with seventy
came in in some and there on, which was just
getting over the half century mark, I think then Philips
was forty nine not out, and it just left them
that little bit short. And they had good partnerships to
them in four partnerships over fifty, but again nothing that
really cemented the game in their favor, and that at
(32:06):
once in that well type scenario, and of course at
a thirty five a run lead, I think they probably
lost it with I mean, Peter Bill them back into
it with that third innings against Srilanka, but she linking
him too. Three o nine was a fairly effective tally,
I thought in the context of things but as you say,
I mean, will I raw. I thought that was an
outstanding display his opening test in the sub Continent, eight
(32:29):
for one hundred and four of his return. He really
is a bowler of some considerable promise and you can
only just hope that maybe him and Kyle Jamison will
get on the park at some stage, maybe in the
not too distant future. That would be a fairly useful
attack to take over from the Saudi Bolt and the
Wagoner years. So that would be something to perhaps look
(32:51):
forward to. But I thought just that application against spin
probably cost New Zealand as well. On the fourth of things,
it was getting pretty tough there was. It was started
to know, it was like facing chainsaws. By the time
they put pictures in that rough towards the end, he
really didn't know. You're fending off et cetera. And once
it gets hits you on the back pad, it was
(33:11):
you know, you're flicking those balls up to the close
in the fielders. It's it's a tricky proposition.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
Yeah, And AJS Patel, his bizarre kind of career continues
more success and great success. It is on overseas pitchers.
He just continues to deliver in the subcontinent, doesn't he?
Speaker 9 (33:28):
Oh, he does, And he's a joy to watch at times,
isn't he?
Speaker 6 (33:31):
Patel?
Speaker 9 (33:31):
Just the way he's able to just nag away and
he's he's just got such rhythm and is just tests
bad as the whole time with his line and length
et cetera. You know, no great pace or anything like that,
just keeps floating it up. Lovely flight from from Patel,
and I just I do feel for him that he
(33:52):
hasn't been in New Zealand. Conditions are vastly different and
you have to you pick your players according and your team.
But basically hasn't had a more consistent spot in the
side as a spinner over over an old paer when
you think, and I think too that well, the real
one that gives me when he was brought back from
getting ten wickets in Mumbai and anything has got in
(34:13):
just so few players that have done that over a
period of time in tests and then wasn't picked for
the next Test at home and even just as a
marketing exercise. It was a bit rotten for him. But yeah,
you just feel like, have we actually seen the best
of them over the.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Years exactly given where this result sets now, a loss
to the black Caps name obviously on the back of
the summer where they had the struggles against Australia, the
success over this at a South African beat team. What's
your expectations over the next couple of months Obviously India
very much on the horizon too here.
Speaker 9 (34:45):
Yeah, well, I think what I love about Coops is
it's in context now is the World Test Championship. Effectively,
I think they've just got to win this next Test
against Sri Lanka to stay in contention neal or to
give themselves a decent charge. I think they might have been.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Pushed back to fourth as a result of that match.
Speaker 9 (35:01):
Today they were in the third behind Australia and India.
But then yeah, just again crucial in India. You've got
to make some inroads there. That's going to be a
tricky proposition of the New Zealand side. I think the
spin element to the team, there's a bit of promise there.
With the way Senters developed his Test game. Likewise, Phillips
is a real competitor in that regard as well, to
(35:25):
back up AJS Patel and if a Rock can hold
his fitness has still got sears and Henry in the
ranks as well if they need some more pace to
be as ammunition for for all the Tests to come,
if they need to rotate. But then of course you've
got the England series at home and there'll be some
mushroom games there as well, if New Zealand want to
(35:48):
maintain their place or at least give themselves a chance
of making that World Test Championship Final again, you know,
backing up their achievement in twenty twenty one, be able
to do it at lauds this time I think during
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
And indeed's all right, we'll putting a Test cricket to come.
Thanks very much. Andrew Aldison there with his thoughts on
the caps first Test defeat and gaul as orders mentioned
another chance for them to get that long awaited first
ever win at the same venue when Test two gets
underway next week. Quick break here on Sports Talk Your
Monday night power rankings to come.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Next, Dadies Power rankings.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Yes, Monday nights of course, time for Piney's power rankings.
Of course it's not Piney here, so it's Coops's power
rankings this week. I'll try not to let you down, Piney,
if you're listening the best and worst of the sporting weekends.
Let's crack on into it. Ten ten the White Ferns.
Is there any team more predictable in New Zealand sport?
(36:49):
Right now?
Speaker 9 (36:51):
And run out?
Speaker 10 (36:53):
So in the end lea to who who run out
on the very last delivery?
Speaker 11 (36:58):
So in the end New.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Zealand fall short. Another series defeat to Zip for the
game to spare in the t twenties against Australia. That's
nine twenty twenty losses in a row for the White Ferns.
What more can we say other than this is a
continued embarrassment. Nine Staying with cricket, the Black Cats ball,
(37:21):
that's it, the top of the bell.
Speaker 10 (37:23):
Sri Lanka come back this morning and Dawn wears any time.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Didn't take long? Did It's some encouraging moments, say Jaspttel
will I Rock with the ball, Rutch and Revenger and
Tom Lathan with the bats. But those individual efforts just
not quite enough to get the job done. And Test
one and at Sri Lanka at least though we got
some cricket where they didn't come into things, which is nice.
Speaker 6 (37:42):
Eat the All.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Blacks gets it in Savia gets it out catch it
over the typelighte. The All Blacks hang on to win
the match. The All Blacks hang on to the Bls
low three tries in the opening sixteen minutes and then
got the fright of their life. The All Blacks thirty
one Australia twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Okay, yes we'll win. Yes, the Bleader's look up for
a twenty third straight year. But another poor final twenty minutes.
That's why you're eight All Blacks seven. Chris Woods on
the Premier League score sheets yet again would and he
dispatches it with the minimum of fuss. Nottingham Forest lead
at the ax. Her penalty in the thirteenth minutes helped
(38:21):
Nottingham Forest eventually to a tool draw with brighton the key.
We still got it, hasn't he? Six Lando Norris.
Speaker 10 (38:28):
Lando Norris can stop hearing about his starts and start
enjoying his finishes. For the third time in Formula one,
Lando Norris takes the checkered flag and dominant drive complete.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
It's just chewing closer and closer into max verst up
ins Formula one lead, another win and Singapore today. Who
else is excited for the end of the season? There
five by stay about the Wellington Lions.
Speaker 5 (38:51):
Roony Higgins, who's on the left hand side.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Check kicks are true? Wellington are chasing. Can they get
near the half back? Preston possibly gets there. I think
he's called at the.
Speaker 10 (39:02):
Chimes cards while I was brilliantly chased by Kyle Press.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
It's the games of Wellington. Yeah, no Ramfhilly Shield, no worries.
The Lions bounce back to consolidate their NPC leads, needing
golden point to do it though, and a thriller against
Bay of plenty four were head to the FARA Palmer
Cup Championship and the money were two Cyclones.
Speaker 11 (39:24):
Poor seasoneen in the final, No doubt about it, best
time around and the singer titled asking the.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Panawa te Cyclones win the FIA Harmer Cup Championship. They
earned promotion to Monao two, up to the top tier
next year. They were really a force to be reckoned
within the championship this year. Congratulations three Argentina, Los Pumas.
Speaker 12 (39:47):
Over the ball, lost Boomers. They got the job done
in dramatic fashion, an unbelievable crowd, an unbelievable test match
drama to the dead. The rugby championship will be decided
in Nelsprate next weekend.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
A one to win over the spring Box Argentina. They
are definitely the most passionate team in rugby right now.
You'll love to see US two number two Liam Lawson.
Stars continue to align for the Kiwi to get a
full time drive next year. If Daniel Ricardo's interview today
is anything to go by after his eighteenth placing in Singapore,
(40:26):
an exit seems near. Possibly.
Speaker 10 (40:29):
You know, I have to acknowledge that.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
It's obviously it's been a little.
Speaker 11 (40:32):
Bit of a race by race situation and I would
have obviously loved the weekend to have gone better it didn't.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
I have to be prepared for Yeah, this may be
being it one. There is really only one lydia Co.
Speaker 8 (40:46):
And that's just kept coming for lydia cole.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
Here, lydia Co came from two strokes back at the
start of the day to triumph by five strokes at
the latest LPGA event in Ohio with a nine underpar
final round sixty three. She finished at twenty three under overall.
That's three back to back when's starting with her Olympic
gold from last months. What more can you say about
the sublime at kiw Golfer, who again is just in
(41:14):
the form of her life and clearly loving it too,
even better, and she'll be heading back on tour next
year in a bid for a career Grand Slam, needing
two more majors for the feat.
Speaker 11 (41:24):
It's always been a goal of mine to do the
career Grand Slam, but I just thought that would be
so out there. But you know, I feel like I've
already been part of this fairy tale, so why not?
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Wonderful stuff? Those are your Monday Night power rankings. It's
six to eight. Back to rap next here on Sports Talk.
One final text to wrap up the All Blacks are
lacking grunt up front to your light and locks without white,
lock and metallic who could play both eight or could
both play eighty minutes? Darry will be good in time
to come. They also seem to be playing like it's
super rugby, where mistakes don't get punished as much as
(41:57):
they do it international rugby. If Mackenzie's passes had stuck,
it would be a different discussion. Thanks very much for that, Nick,
And that's where we will where we will leave our
discussion for a Monday Night plenty more on that front
to come through the course of the week, or Wax
continuing to train in Outington through the course of the
next few days. Team naming Thursday and then the final
(42:18):
Bledderslow Cup Test fought the year in the Capitol at
a sold out sky Stadium on Saturday night. Looking forward
to it. Thanks for your company, Thanks to everyone who's
called and texted through the evening. Thanks to our guests
Liam Napier and Andrew Ordison. Big thanks as always to
producer Andy McDonald as well. Heavy Elves a wonderful Monday night.
(42:38):
Marcus Lush is next. We'll catch up again soon.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
