Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk zed B johin Us.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Now on the show is All Black Sam, Darry look
thrown and I won't say at the deep end, although
you don't get much deeper than All Black tests rugby.
And he's found himself an integral part of the side.
Five tests, two starts, three off the bench like he
was off the bench over the weekend and that hear

(00:33):
him scare him game of rugby, Sam, welcome to the program.
The end of that game, she was a bit a
bit touch and go.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah it was, it was appreciate it. Yeah, you know
we probably fell. We had them right last about twenty
five minutes and then for whatever the reason, kind of
I guess at the game get waste us or even
onto another tie one down the stretch. So I guess
they'll work on but I'm going to come over the winds.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
You're not supposed to say for some reason. Come on, Sam,
you're supposed to know what happened that when you guys
pulled the type of part or not. You're not got
to that yet.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
No, No, we have we've had we've had a good look.
You know, there's a lot of things that go into it,
quite small margins, I think, you know, obviously somebody finishing.
We went there happy with We feel like we created
a lot of opportunities and you know, whether it was
through bad passes or you know, left excusion in that
kind of second half or whatever. You know, we probably
left about howl that we left about three or four

(01:29):
tries out there, so you know, we have those passes
stick and finish those at a different game.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
How's the pressure on yourself when you roll in knowing
that in the last twenty minutes of games the all
Blacks in the last five haven't scored a try. Do
you do you feel that when you're rolling in with
fifteen to go.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Definitely feel I think regardless of whatever the stats are
or whatever, I think there's always pressure around it and
fishing because you're usually going to be coming on in
a test match when you're in the in the kind
of deciding moment. So you know, that's something that I've
just had to learn and I probably haven't quite got
right yet, is that every little moment matters, So any
little mistaken or whatever can have massive invocations on the

(02:09):
outcome of the game. So he did right. It's a
tough role to come on off the bench and they're
definitely pressure, but it's also exciting, you know, because you
get an opptunity to be there. As I said in
that I guess game any moments.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Sam there, You've started a couple against Argentina, you've come
off the bench in three What do you like more
starting or muffing it up? Being a spark plague?

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Oh? Mate, I just enjoy being out there this year.
I think I think I'm far earlier in my career
to have been complaining about how I'm evolved. You know, obviously,
you know, as everyone does, rather be out there from
the start. But whatever my role is, with it starting,
coming off the bench or helping pair the boys throughout
the week, I'm just loving being in the environment.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Been a bit of pressure at Lock, and I think
what we've seen so far through the year the results
have been up and down, is that Tuple has been
absolutely fantastic. Must give your heart to see the way
this guy, because he's been pushed into that role with
that other injuries, the way he stood up and what
he's done. You keeping a keen eye on Twople and

(03:07):
how he's coked and how he's developed.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah, no, he's he's been incredible away. You know, we're
not a good relationship all of us lots and obviously
with Petty and Scoot going down, Scott's astill the role
of court and the line out and about the film
of a couple for a couple, and he's just taking
mess of Skip. So I haven't been totally. It wasn't
before coming in here, but something incredible and been one
of the this year, I think. So. I guess a

(03:31):
couple a couple of players moved on last year and
he's just kind of slippings.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
You called them Paddy, Scoot and Toops a Scooter, Scott,
Barrett and Patrick to through Petty two ups what's your nickname?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Uh days or just saying to be here with his dairy,
nothing too original.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
I'm sure someone will work on it through there as well.
So yourself, obviously you're keen to you want to start more.
You've had a good start, You've had five test matches,
not a wings grunted. When you look back at what
you've been up to and how you've develop where do
you think the areas are that you've really stepped up
to the plate and conversely, where do you think you
could probably do a lot better and lift from from

(04:15):
Super Rugby, which is a very different game.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, it's a great question. I think I obviously came
and been fortunate at the game time I've got so
it's been, it's been awesome. I've learned heaps. I think
that I'm been pretty happy with my reality and the
stuff around the set piece. You know, very fortunate. They
have great greats around me to help with there. But
as I say, especially coming off the bench, I think
that the accuracy is probably just a bit of work

(04:38):
for myself. As I say, you know, any any little
year or whatever in those last kind of fifteen to
twenty minutes in a tight game can have masisification. So
you know, we often talk about it about being kind
of like just clean and decisive when you come off
the bench, inaccurate, So that to work on for me,
it's something of a continual wonder. I'll get turn away,
But you know, it's been, it's been awesome just being.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
What's the step up being like Sam Darry from Super Rugby,
how much of a step up is it when you've
got a black jersey on and you're playing Internationals. It's
a good level super rugby. But the next step, how
great a jump is.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
It's a big jump, but I feel like it kind
of it kind of happens quite naturally. You know, you
obviously in for a couple of weeks training and you
kind of start to lift your level through there, and
you know you're kind of surrounded by all these players
that you're almost forced to just kind of either lift
your level or you'll probably pretty quickly for yourself on
the outer you know, so if we step up, you know,

(05:32):
the civicality, the speed of the game, everything happens very quickly.
And if I say there's such fine margins things you
a lot better get away with or you might drop
a ball and it might you know, so out You know,
if you drop at test level, the other team's cracking
it up, shifting at a couple of passes and likely
making it making the breach. So be the physicality and
those fine margins are the three things that I've noticed.

(05:53):
A big steps up and kind of having to lift
to that level.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Are you settling in do you feel like you belong
as an All Black? I know it's only early days,
but do you feel like you deserve to be there.
Have you the ability to beak up and contribute to
what's going on out they that's a.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Good question, you know obviously when it came in, you know,
it takes a while to kind of sink in and
feel real. But I think now that I've got a
couple of tests on on my belt and seeing that,
you know, I feel like I can't compete physically, you know,
you can't start to realize that, you know, so I
can put a few more things together, you know, I
feel like I can really start to impose yourself on

(06:31):
the game. So now you're right at first, it kind
of does take a while to sink in and feel
how you belong. But the boys are awesome taking you
under their wing and kind of bringing you along with
them and making you feel really comfortable in the environment,
and that kind of build your confidence and it helps
you see that how do you.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Deal with criticism? Because planning, when you all blacks lose,
people do like to pile and no one likes it.
They're vested, They've got vested interests in the team to
do well, so they really feel a part of it.
And as a direct result, you're going to wear a
bit of flaked. Do you have any ways of dealing
with that? Do you avoid the print media, do you
listen to the radio, do you suck at all in?

(07:07):
Do you look at social media? How do you go
about dealing with that criticism approaching that scene.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
It's a good question. Obviously, these things, if they're a
lot more heightened it you know, it's it's still here,
but it's probably not as prevalent. I'm not I'm not
too much of one to be watching news or TV
or radio or anything. Obviously, see a wee it on
my phone. But it's all part of it. You know.
We we feel it as well. Obviously if you say
the public doesn't like us losing, but they start out,

(07:34):
we we hate it a lot more than I'm sure
they do. So you know, we we are very honest
in this environment. You know, whenever we have a loss,
or even if we if we get a win and
we don't don't quite play it, but we want to.
We're very honest and we look at everything and we
and we have some great honest conversations and as you say,
it can be tough sometimes, but Jason Ryan's got a great,

(07:54):
great quote that it's for you not about you. So
if there's anything that's, you know, criticism of yourself and
your game, it's never personal. It's always always gaimed trying
to here and get the team better. So as he
kind of look at it from from that approach, I
think it definitely helps stealing with the criticism.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
And finally, tell us about Scott Robertson and how he's
carrying this, because if anyone's been under the pump, it's
been raised. After the good times he's had with Crusaders,
things have changed somewhat. How do you see him coping
with this and developing as a coach of you even
noticed much about.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
That sent Yeah, it's been awesome. All the coaches have
been great obviously to say it's been about so I
appreciate it. But as I said, there's also been a
bit of pressure from ourselves. You know that we feel
like we haven't quite played the way we want to,
but we also know that we're not far away. You know,
we don't like to make excuses, but we've put to
give us some great i'd bit fast. It's just about
a consistency and they're taking the opportunities when they present themselves.

(08:52):
We feel that we're stringing to give us some phases
creating opportunities, and they said, and they're just not quite
executing those last final ones and really putting teams to
the sword. So now the coach, I think great. You know,
they're constantly developed our game, working on growing our game.
That's constantly what we talk about, regardless of results. So yeah,
you know, we all we all want to be better

(09:14):
and we want to we want to turn things around,
and we're getting closer. So hopefully this will give me
to be able to put out a performance.
