Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News talks'd be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're joining it now on Sports Talk by Christopher Kens,
longtime New Zealand cricketer of course, very successful all round
player and a guy who I suspect is still sitting
back after what happened in India going what on earth
just happened there?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Cansy.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Great to have you on board. That was quite the
turn up. They haven't won their what two victories in
thirty six shots and now they haven't won yet, but
what a way to start. What happened?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Yeah, Hi does? It was crazy, right?

Speaker 4 (00:45):
I mean we had a similar thing in ninety nine
actually made where there was it was that the wicket
was gluggy, like really unusual. Flem won the toss and
we bowled right. I think it was the first time
a captain had won the toss and bowled in India for.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Decades and so, and I don't remember what the score was.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
It certainly wasn't for sex, but yeah, we sort of
managed to make inroads, but then the game sort of
peed it out, mate, I mean it's just the wickt
just died literally from the second or two and a
half days and so the only concern now is that
New Zealand will have to put on, you know, a
significant score, which they've laid the foundation for off the

(01:26):
back of some beautiful bowling in helpful conditions. And Rohert
Sharma said he got you know, he got the toss wrong.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
I don't want to detract from what happened, but I am,
after all part of the bloody media. We can't help ourselves.
India didn't help themselves, did There was some superb bowling,
without a doubt, But the Indians to would agree they
gifted some wickets, didn't they And they'd be absolutely devastated
by that.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Well, I think made it's just a modern patter, right,
I mean, you know we we see the in a
in a bygone era. That movement is something you would
get on the first morning of a test, you know,
in quite a few in quite a few countries, and
so that that requires patience and requires good judgment. Leaving
the ball as much of a skill as hitting the

(02:12):
six mane. So you know that's what was required yesterday.
But you know the pressure that Saudi put on, he
didn't He was unlucky not to have picked up a few,
but it was tailor made for Henry and willow Wick
came on and he is, he is. We've got a
real up and comer there. I mean, he is going
to be a very very good test baller.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
On about up and comer. I think he's already stood
up and he's already arrived the way and what gets
me about him christ And I think you'd appreciate this
as well. The rage and the anger that normally surrounds
fast battles doesn't exist with this bike. He turns up
balls and pages of delivery, some very aggressive chin and
throat music, and then he turns around and wanders back
to his mark.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Again. It's quite unusual, but he does. He's quite he's
sort of.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Quite West Indian and his build, his action, his style
because he's the West Indian guys never really used to
say a lot either. But they were nasty, you know,
really nasty and from a bowling perspective, I mean not
from a personality perspective, and so they would you know,
they would just they would bowl heavy, heavy balls, aggressive deliveries,

(03:16):
put pressure on you, constantly, bounces, so and Orok seems
to be cut from the same cloth. So he you know,
he just he just gets on with his bowling and
does what he does. But you know it was laid.
It was look, the foundations were. Look, there's been a
lot of talk about Tim Soudy and you know I
thought he bobbed beautiful yesterday and he was unlucky. I mean,
he beat the bat numerous occasions and it just wasn't

(03:36):
quite his day. But Matt Henry wicket to wicket wobbles
that seems so you know, he's got no idea whether it's.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Going to dip in or it's going to nip away.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Right, So he's got no idea when the batsman's got
absolutely no idea. So that's what makes him so dangerous
mate in those conditions is that you know, you just
do not know which way the ball is going to seem.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
And also, and Chris Kens joins the show, the guys
had such an astonishing weight behind the likes of Sauvie involvet.
He makes the most of every opportuit tunity he gets
without complaint, and he's done that for the last few
Test matches. To go, fine, leave me on the sideline,
but look at what I can do. I think this
is so well deserved for a guy that's bited.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
His time so much.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
No, you're right, and he's and he's you know, you
never hear anything complaints from him or mate. He just
gets in and does his work. He's super competitive as well.
You know, you see the way that he just keeps
running in. But he's he's going to be an excellent
leader of the tax of the attack. So I sort of, look,
we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves here.
We've got this test to play well. But you know,
looking forward over the summer, you sort of see Soudy

(04:39):
perhaps fasing out and he deserves the series at home,
you know, and it may well be that that times
in with Jamison potentially coming back. So man, if you've
got Henry leading the attack with o'walke and Jamison, that's
a that's a hell of an attack. So you know,
that's exciting for new Zeller Credit fans.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
The captain. See how much of a relief and a
release was that that for Tim Soudy to have that
hand that over walk away from that and give that
to lath them after the what we saw him do yesterday.
Is it too easy to say that's part of the
issue here. He no longer has that weighing him down.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
No, I don't think so, mate. I just think he's
you know, what happens to all great players. And look, Tim.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Saldi is a great Test cricketer.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
You just you know, he's he's bowling in the low
one thirties, high one twenties whereas he used to bowl,
you know, mid one thirties. So just that, just that
little reduction and pace, you know, makes a big difference
his you know, he's been unbelievably resilient health wise, you know,
so he deserves every bit of credit you know, in

(05:49):
the accolades that I'm sure that he will receive. You know,
are we talking about the end of them? Yeah, we
probably are. But you know, the attack that's coming through
now behind him is in good hands, so you know,
it may be, you know, it may well be that
we see the last of of Tim Saldi over the summer.
And as I said, he deserves to play here for
the summer. But those guys that are coming through, Matt Henry,

(06:14):
you know, the way he's producing things, you know, you've
got a good two to three years at least with
that trio throwing another young Seema as well, who's out
there and it's you know, the bowling stocks are looking
very healthy, you know, and you judge it by how
you go in Australia man, And that's the sort of
attack because of the height and the bounce that they'll
get on those wickets that you can actually begin to

(06:36):
put the Aussies underpressure.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Chris Ken's hallmark of the New Zealand team for a
number of years and recently it has wobbled is their
fielding and their ability to take the catches when required.
Now that's been a bit sloppy recently, but they pretty
much short of problem behind the stumps with one. But
they possed everything, didn't They The catching more superb and
that was a huge, huge advantage to them. And you

(06:59):
look at Devin Conway and what heated outrageous?

Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, and you're exactly right.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
And it's one of those basic things that I think
New Zealand has always pride to itself on and and
if you if you're not giving the opposition that you know,
the opportunity to have a life. And that was again
whenever you know, in our time through that nineties and
two thousands worth adam PERORI behind the stumps, Stephen Fleming
first slip, Nathan Astell second slip.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Those those folks didn't d anything.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
And that's and that's why we had some success during
that time because the chances that we were making were
being taken and so but that just comes down and
I know that those guys worked unbelievably hard. I mean,
and that was off the back of Steve Rickson really
pushing the slippers, really making sure he.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Just drilled them and drilled them and drilled them.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
And if you're able to take those catches, and that's
what Australia does so brilliantly, well is it? They just
they just don't let you off the hook. And New
Zealand's capable of it. But it just means that you
have to do that extra bit of work at training.
You know, that's the only thing you can you can do.
It's just hard work.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Weather pending. It's going to be very interesting next three days.
How in a perfect world would they go about doing this?
They've got a healthy lead now of one hundred and
thirty four. I think that was off the top of
my head. There's still three days to play. What happens
now when you consider it, well.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Hopefully there's no rain.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah, well, you know what, I wouldn't mind a bit
of rain. If we can keep the covers on intermittently,
then that's not a bad thing. Because if you're able
to eke out, you know, two or three quick ones
from the Indian side of things, you know, then you
know they don't have a huge amount of depth and
so to get you know, knocking that top order off

(08:45):
will be will be critical.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
However, New Zealand will.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
Be looking just about as long as they can. But
what I did, like, go man, is that and Devin Conway,
I thought sort of refound I think a little bit
of his his identity and test because he had sort
of gone a little bit defensive. And I think he's
a beautiful player, beautiful touch player, and so he just
looked to dominate a little bit more.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
But he does it in his own way. Man. He
sort of does it with you know, nice he's sort
of a he's a bit of a surgeon really.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
And and and so he does it nicely, but he's
he was aggressive nicely, and so he sort of got
back in the flow of things.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
And I think that's his game. And and you know,
revenger is is he's going to be a superstar.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
And you know, whether whether he stays around long enough
to sort of, you know, be the next King Williamson,
that's a big moniker to put on him. But he's
you know, he's showing all the all the hallmarks of
being a superb player.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
So Mitchell knows how to plan in that subcontinent. And
then you've got Phillips and Blundle to come. So look
New Zealand.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
I mean they'll be pushing for four hundred and five
hundred here and then with a view that it's just
about time and they just have to boil balls and
they just have to keep going and going and putting
pressure on them and you know, and set and set
up what would be a remarkable victory.
