really feel like long enough tonight, because name me a
(00:47):
better sporting weekend than this one. I certainly can't remember one.
Highlighted and headlined by the White Ferns.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
You Zemen have done it. They have climbed their interest,
name each names and history.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
The White Ferns t twenty World champions, a sentence that
even the most optimistic and passionates of cricket fans couldn't
possibly have dreamed of, let alone expected to happen a
couple of weeks ago. We're going to get in the
morning after reaction from White firms. Captain Sophie Devine standing
by to chat to us in just a moment, the
only other captain to lift a women's cricket World Cup
(01:26):
for New Zealand Emily drum is also along to give
her reaction. But that is just the start of our
sporting success in the last couple of days, black Caps
Team New Zealand, Silver Ferns, Liam Lawson, hat and Wild
And that is by no means an exhaustive list of
the sporting success by Kiwi's these past seventy two hours
or so, so much so that I'm going to need
(01:49):
your help with our regular Monday night feature, Piney's Power Rankings. Now,
this is where we rate the best and the worst
of the sporting weekend, and when it comes to the best,
we are quite honestly completely spoilt for choice. So we're
going to open the lines of communication pretty much immediately
to chat about this wonderful sporting weekend and get your
guidance on how it all stacks up and what gave
(02:12):
you the greatest joy the greatest enjoyment over the last
couple of days. So please join the show in particular
tonight as we celebrate KIWI success. Oh eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty is the phone number nine two ninety
two if you'd like to get in touch by text
or send your emails to Jason at Newstalk SB dot
co dot nz. It is eight past seven. No need
(02:34):
for the TMO.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
We've got the breakdown on Sports Talk cal oh eight
hundred news talks.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
They have done it in their way, they have done
it with humility. They had fashed through cramps tonight. This
team has never stopped believing. They've paid each other's bags
all the way through.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
They've done it for the firm.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
What a moment for that team.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
What a moment. Indeed, White Firm's captain Sophie Divine is
with US T twenty world champion White Ferns captain Sophie
Divine to give you your correct title. How were the
celebrations last night, Sophie.
Speaker 6 (03:17):
Hey, pai, Look, I think some of the girls are
still going this morning, sue that I haven't been to
sleep yet, but it's a good shift from them. But look,
I think it's been a pretty special occasion, so right,
we deserve a good celebration.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
With it, absolutely right. So having given it the overnight test,
presumably you've had a couple of hours sleep. How do
you reflect back on the final? Yeah, let's start with
the final. How do you reflect back on the win
in the final and New Zealand's performance in it.
Speaker 7 (03:44):
Oh look, I think certainly.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
That I'm really proud of is that we're able to
perform in a way that we've spoke about at links
that you know, we want to be aggressive, we want
to take the game on and to be able to
do that in a World Cup final. It's one thing
to do, I guess during the pool stages, but to
put it together like we did last night against a
South Frican side that you know, just the match before
had absolutely demolished Australia, I think that just shows just
(04:07):
the strength and resilience and this group to be able
to back it up and find a way to put
it together. So just incredibly proud of performance from the group.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
One fifty eight at the innings break. Did that feel
like enough you felt like you could defend that?
Speaker 6 (04:21):
Yeah, definitely. I think obviously the scores and the tournament
have been pretty low, just with the touching conditions and
things like that. But last night's working I thought was
a really good cricket work at so for us, we
were always targeting one forty one fifty over that we
were really pleased with. So yeah, like absolutely we would
have guessed out to defend anything. So it was it
(04:42):
was a really competitive score and obviously ended up being
too much with chaut Africa.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
And when you look at the way the bowler is
bold to defend that total and get your home comfortably
in the end by thirty two runs. What are your
what was your assessment of the way the bowling unit
attacked their task in the final?
Speaker 6 (04:59):
Well, I think not just in the final, but I
think they've been fantastic sure, and I think we've seen
spin has obviously done needed that. I need to give
a shout out to the quick bowlers in terms of
leader to who who enrose me miror and what they've
been able to achieve. I'm pretty tough slow slow wickets,
but I guess we always knew that the power play
was going to be really important, and Jettisfica came at
(05:20):
our hard and to be able to hold our nerve
and I thought, leader to her, who's over? I think
is the night's over? To her to go out and
really start to tie them down. That shifted momentum and
from there we were just able to squeeze to be
able to build that one rate, which you know in
finals is really important because that pressure is magnified. So
(05:40):
again the bowler is accident and to be able to
throw any one of them the ball and know that
they can do a job is makes my life a
hell of a lot easier.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
It's well documented that you came into the tournament with
no form to speak of. What was it about the
last two or three weeks and the way you played
your cricket that allowed you to go all the way
to the final and win the whole thing.
Speaker 6 (06:01):
It's interesting you see that because you talk about form
in terms of results. Absolutely we were bit of a stinkers.
We're being completely honest. Obviously, teen losses in a row
that we knew that the performances that were starting to
put together were you know, there are glimpses of it
and for us to then be able to pull that together,
I think obviously the India game through staff was always
going to be a crucial game for us. We've been
(06:22):
tagging it for a very long time. But we also
knew that the way that we had to play that
we knew that we couldn't be reserved and you know,
in our show, we need to go out and take
the game on and that really set the home for
the rest of the tournament and how to play. Obviously
the game against Australia was disappointing, but I mean looking
back now, it did it matter too much? Probably not,
(06:42):
But yeah again, these last couple of weeks, the way
that we've been able to roll that performances and the
thing for me is it's been a real team effort.
We've been someone different every game and stood up obviously
nearly here winning Player of the Tournament as well last
night as outstanding. But the support she said from you know,
his fellow spinners, but also the other bowlers people would
back Georgia Plumber has been outstanding.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
You know.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
It is so many people that we could call out
that have done a job and being asked for the
World Cup trophy.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I heard you and your postmatch interview. Will one of
them say that, I think it was the night before
the final. You'll let yourself think about what it might
be like to hold that hold that trophy. I know
you've always been very measured in the way that you
approach your cricket, but what were the emotions like when
when you won.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
It's funny because it was it still hasn't really sunk
in to be here. I mean it's sort of twelve
hours since Sintu one, but it still hasn't really sunk
in the magnitude of what was been able to achieve,
I think because it hasn't just been the last couple
of weeks, sort of in the last couple of years.
If not, you know, my whole career building up to
(07:53):
the toy being able to win a World time. Every
cricket's dreams is to win a trophy like this, So
it hasn't spunk in. But to be able to spend
it with the seen, with the group, with a huge
family and friends last night was it was really special
and it's going to ye take away well to soak
in and we'll certainly do that. But we've also got
(08:14):
another assignment in a couple of days times, so it's
just the nature of the international schedule at the moment,
but yeah, we'll take the time to yeah things so
Ken for what was a pretty special couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Are you going to reconsider your decision to step down
as T twenty captain.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
No, he's not a chance. I mean it's a pretty
good way to bow out, but yeah, a lot this
decision has been a long time coming to me. And
I think it's just a great way to sign off
and hand over to who the next step is going
to be. So yeah, obviously still really keen and still
have a lot more to give, both in the fifty
over format but also t twenties as well and just
(08:51):
a playing capacity. So yeah, I think it's a great
way to sign off.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
And what was the actual highlight spelling out Tawer with
the Curse Sisters and Georgia Plumber up on the podium afterwards.
Speaker 6 (09:03):
Well, in thing was was how long it took us
to figure out how to stall it. It was a
little bit embarrassing from us, but no, look, I think
it was so cool to be able to share that
with people from Tawa, to be able to have it
bond as pretty cool in the middle of stadium.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, well, a lot of people with two three two
in their phone numbers enjoyed that very much. We all
enjoyed watching the White Fans become world champions. Sophie, thanks
for having a chat to us the morning after a
year off to India. As you say now, but congratulations
to you and the team and what you've achieved. Absolutely sensational.
Thank you, Sophie. Sophie Divine joining us there out of
(09:46):
the UAE. Yeah. Look, I think you can forgive them
all for staying up and not going to sleep. Man,
not every day you become world champions. Heeps are called
social media footage coming through the team and the changing
room afterwards. And yeah, I haven't seen anything from from
the Shenanigans overnight. Maybe that's best that they keep that
(10:06):
to themselves, but man, they absolutely deserve it. All right,
help me out here. I do my power rankings every
Monday night, and normally Andy and I sort of, you know,
get our heads together and say, okay, we'll put that
and that's going to be in. We'll have that, et cetera,
et cetera. Andy sent me, I think it was seventeen
things today to go into into the top ten. So
(10:29):
I said, I'm not that great at maths, but that
gonna work. So help me out here. White Ferns black Caps.
They're third of a test when in India. The team
New Zealand three peat at the America's Cup, Silver Ferns
thrashing Australia and Constellation Cup Test one, Hayden Wild clinching
the season ending World triathlon event. Liam Lawson from the
(10:51):
back of the grid to ninth in his Formula one return.
Put that into context for us, Oh, eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty nine, two ninety two on text, give
us a hand here, angers, you'll probably say, Liam Lawson,
I would imagine absolutely.
Speaker 7 (11:07):
Your Formula one correspondent going back.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Good to have you with us, Good to have you
with us, my friend.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
That's a cret interview on Sunday you said, by the way,
I gave you a text afterwards, but it was a
really goodness views that your actual properly correspondent.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Oh, Bob, Yes, I got Yes, I got your text.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
You know.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
I mean, he's he's just so good, isn't he. Bobby
just just so knowledgeable. I always always love getting him
on because I always arn hates.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
Yeah, it seems like a pretty good boy. And he
articulates it well too, which is probably one of a
really good thing about being a good Formula one corresponding
because it is so technical and people don't understand it.
So I think it articulated. My dad was actually really good.
I think fearlessness. So yeah, look, I think Leam Lawson
obviously is going to point pretty biased. I think that's
that's that is huge. I think it's difficult because it
is pretty hard to kind of quantify what he has
(11:50):
actually done, the fact that he was to go far back,
and the other thing too. I mean I watched the
whole race this morning. You know, he raced people like
Fernando Longslo who's a three time world champion, and other
people around him, like like you've been on the great
all season, and it was just it was just so
cooled to watch. It was awesome. So yeah, yeah, I'm
really tired over the weekend. I've had bugger all asleep
as worth it.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
That's so good. I Bob was saying yesterday that that
one thing he liked watching about Liam was that he
didn't seem to really care about the fact that, you know,
he's on there as the new boy h And I remember,
I can't remember who he talked about. Might have been, No,
I can't remember who it was. I'll say the wrong name.
Somebody who got annoyed.
Speaker 7 (12:31):
Yeah, no, that was Alonzo.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
So it was Alonso.
Speaker 7 (12:33):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he did a perfectly racing move on
in the shrimp race, and he probably he repeated that
in the actual Grand Prix itself. And yeah, like you say,
I mean, the thing is the probably the thing is
though he's been he's been around here to he's been
around super Formula, he's always been like that. I mean,
if you think back to last year when he stepped
in and the Japanese com pree his opponent, so his
teammate was Yuki Snowder, who was of Japanese descent, and
(12:56):
he's like the home favorite, and he raced him like
it was you know, like you've been racing him all season.
I shouldn't. He doesn't care, but he just, like you say,
he just kind of his ability to step in and
just you know, he could have raced around finished in
be fourteen p. Fifteen and they would have been like, yeah, okay,
past mark fair enough. I think that he's got points.
It's just it's unbelievable. So I think you know that
that's obviously that's my highlight and you know, you go
(13:17):
a lot going on, but yeah, that's where I'm at
with that.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Good man, Angus, good stuff. I hope you're get a
bit of sleep in the next little while, mate, because
there's more to come obviously in Formula one. Good to
chat to you, man, and thanks for your call yesterday.
And your text. I really appreciated that callback to chet
Formula one or anything else anytime you like, oh eight,
one hundred and eighty ten eighty, only one team for me,
says Paul. The White Ferns absolutely brilliant. Yep, White Funds
all the way, pint he says Kevin. I tend to
(13:42):
agree it'll take something well because it takes something special
and knock them off top spot tonight. I don't think
anything's going to happen in the next thirty minutes that's
going to do it, But I'm keen to hear how
you rank some of the other things that have happened
over the weekend. Hello, Dave, I've.
Speaker 8 (13:56):
Got a lot of the black Caps were or now
is coming as Isn't.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
He Absolutely good? Absolutely cool India a bowling attack.
Speaker 8 (14:07):
We've got some good paste bowls and in our trick
at the writing stars anywhere that can not thrive. The video,
the bit and the crowd seem to like Revender, don't they.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
They absolutely love them. Yep, they just love him over there.
They he's some I think his grandparents are from Bengalaru
where they played this Test match, so he's got a
bit of an affinity with with that place in Particket.
But honestly, he is, he's I'm not saying he's as
popular over there as such intent Dolker and Ruld rather
and him as Doney, but he's he's he's getting to
(14:38):
the stage where he won't be able to walk down
the street anymore over there.
Speaker 8 (14:42):
He's a riding star, isn't he know? The Black Caps
the bowl them out for a small, small school like that,
and that's that's going to be pretty good and chase
that total down, you know that to beat India. That's
that's that saying something and really makes feel good, you
know for the Black black Caps. You know they haven't
(15:04):
got them, Study hasn't got them, burden of the captaincy
on on them. And you know they've got some bowlders
that get pretty tall and get pacing, bounce in a
couple of wickets.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Yeah, no, David was it was awesome to watch, mate,
it was, and I I look, I thought Henry and
Iraq were terrific. The interesting thing about Saudi Ihard it
suggested as well that yeah that Saudi without without the
shackles of the captain c was a bit more relaxed
when he batted. He's always he's always batted that way.
He is never not battered that way when he's captain,
(15:41):
when he's not captain. He just goes out there and
bats that way all the time. And this time it
came off when he gets sixty odd. It was great
to watch. But yeah, I don't think we can put
that down to being unencumbered by the captaincy because because
of that that I don't think is the case at all.
John says Piney. We spoke Friday night about the risks
(16:01):
of the reverse sweep. I think there was a wicket
from that. But still, of all the success on the weekend,
I the White Friends the highest when you consider the
terrible loss record they had coming into this event. Was
it twelve on the trot So as a former skeptic
of women's cricket, their win rates right up there with
the best. Good on you, John, I agree, I totally agree. Agree.
Glenda says easy Jason, women's cricket number one, men's cricket
(16:23):
number two, Liam, number three. How do you have it ranked? Phil?
Speaker 9 (16:30):
I got the White Friends. Yeah, the woman's cricket for
me is number one.
Speaker 8 (16:34):
Pointy.
Speaker 9 (16:34):
I got up and watched it what's the whole thing
right through to the presentation and the end, and I
was just, yeah, I thought, you know, to come into
it with the ten losses or whatever whatever they had,
you know, and to not be expected to have basically
a shit show, and hell, I'm winning it. And then
(16:58):
that first win, like you said, against India, that set
up the whole belief, I think. But I listened to
Divine afterwards two in the interview, and there was something
she said kind of intrigued me as well, when I
thought was basically a clue maybe to the key of
the wind as well. The wind as well was I
(17:20):
think she said something about they played ten or fifteen
games coming into the warm up, you know, before the
T twenty four against a couple of the hardest teams
in the world, you know, and they lost them all.
But I thought something in that, you know, because that
would have given them, even though they lost the games,
(17:40):
the preparation because you can't beat you know, playing on
the field for a match hard and experience, you know,
and for that to come through, because you can have
all the theory you want, and you can practice in
the nets, and like any sport, you can go out
in the range and the golf and hit as many
bulls as you want, but when you're actually in the competition,
that's when that's when it comes through, you know. So
(18:03):
I noted that point that she said. I don't know
if other picked up on it, but I thought there's
probably something in't that. You know, they lost them games,
but they were playing hard competition, which has probably prepared
them fantastically or as good as they could be prepared
going into that World Cup. So and ye. The other thing,
the other thing that I thought was fantastic to see
(18:24):
was and what pointy, I don't mind saying, I'm not
the hardest man in the world. It wet a bit
of a tear to my eye when I was watching
Sophie Divine and Susie Bates and Tahu talking about how
they had gone so far together, you know, fourteen years
of a journey together, winning and losing as like sisters
(18:46):
and family and friends. You know that you've become in
that sporting environment when you play with each other for
so long and you're going ups and downs and write
it and I just thought, wow, what is such a special,
beautiful moment for those girls, you know, especially those senior
players that have been there, like Susie Bates and Divine
from the start and who over mate, I reckon the
(19:08):
turn was as good as a merely occur as wickets
were and taken that main South African girl that was
really given it to us, and I was starting to
wonder whether they were going to pull it off, you
know and get that record score. But that Tahu over
where she go only scored I think they only scored
three runs off her and she and she cut the
flow off and stopped it and they were going all
(19:30):
guns blazed, and then Amelia occurred come in and took
the wickets. That was the set up one that allowed
us for that victory.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
I think, yeah, I tend to agree for I think
there were a lot of good overs bold by New Zealanders.
But I think Leo to wh who's over that you've
referenced there definitely was not a turning point than a
key moment. I thought New Zealand bold beautifully brilliantly. I
mean a thirty two run win and a T twenty
game is well, you know, extrapolated out, it's like winning
(19:59):
by seventeen or fifty over match. You know, it's a
comprehensive win and you know they utterly, utterly deserved it.
They played brilliantly. Thanks philp seven twenty six. We're going
to chat shortly to the only other Kiwi who's lifted
a ICC Women's cricket trophy for US, Emily Drum who
(20:22):
did it in two thousand when we won on home
soil in the fifty over World Cup. Back then, keep
your text and calls coming. Oh eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty nineteen nine to two on TEX seven to
twenty six back after this, forget.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
The riffs call, you make a call Olive eighty ten
eighty Sports Talk on your home of sports US Talk
SIBS talks the B.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Seven twenty nine. Lots of good stuff on TEX Presas Pinty.
Spectacular weekend for Kiwi sport. I think the only fair
thing to do is to extend your power rankings to
the top twenty this week. Probably not a bad idea,
Kathy says. Jason is a sports lover and YACHTI I
had Emirates Team New Zealand top of the world until
other results. Wow. For me. Liam is number one White
(21:03):
Ferns two black Caps third team New Zealand fourth and
Ali wallacedon fifth. Thanks Kathy, I'm going to I'm going
to take that under advisement. When i've my power rankings together, well,
I've I've got about five sheets of paper here, all
with different rankings on them, will reveal them and it's
just my opinion. At around quarter to eight, Lamb number
(21:24):
one by far says this one he'll end up driving
as for Stappin's teammate, will be challenging for the championship
very soon. That was a shoemaker like drive in an
Okay car. Peris was only two places ahead with a
much better car. The yachting was great too. What are
we going to watch at one am? When we keep
waking up? What's going on? And Ryan says Liam all
day and next year as Red Bull's number one driver
(21:46):
with for Stappin as his teammate. Let's go all right.
Half past seven, we've heard from Sophie Devine. The only
other New Zealand captain to lift a women's ic Sea
trophy was Emily Drumm, who led New Zealand to victory
at the two thousand World Cup on home soil. Emily,
thanks for joining us when we're looking for explanations as
(22:06):
to how a team with no lead in form whatsoever
has gone on to win the World Cup. Where should
we start when we're trying to find an explanation for that.
Speaker 5 (22:17):
Wow, that's a really good question. And you haven't really
come to the right place for lots of answers either,
because they didn't know, We didn't know. I mean, isn't
that just the beauty of sport? The fact that all
predictions and expectations are throwing well and pretty out the window,
and somehow, somehow this team has got up in the
(22:38):
most unlikeliest of circumstances to win the biggest prize of all.
And it's just an incredible story and one that I
really hope doesn't get overlooked with so much other sport
going on and so much success going on. But this
truly is an incredible achievement by this bunch of players
and the management of the team as well.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Will we right or wrong to doubt their credentials before
the tournament? Not at all?
Speaker 5 (23:07):
I mean, form is important, especially leading up to a tournament.
We all know that, however, there had been a shift. Look,
it's unfortunate when you play Australian in any sport leading
up to a tournament, but often they are the second
and most sports, and especially Crackett being so strong, they're
a good sight to see where you're at. And I
(23:28):
noticed in those three t twenties we've got soundly beaten
in the UK in the winter, and that was a
bit of a down. I thought, gosh, our chances are
really remote. But we played against Australia probably two to
three weeks before this tournament, and I saw signs of
the side showing some really good character. Even though we lost,
we were playing a better brand of cracker and I thought,
(23:50):
gosh it peace together, a couple of good innings, a
couple of good games, we could be within a shout
of getting to the Semis. And then you come up
against the really good, strong teams of depth and loads
of money that have prepared ridiculously well for a tournament.
So I saw the signs were there, but I did
not expect us to win that first game against India,
(24:12):
but that was almost a catalyst for this tournament. And
then to beat sides in an environment that we're not
that familiar with in Dubai, which really should suit the
subcontinent side. We had to beat Pakistan and Shurrunka, who
had lost to in the last twelve months as well,
just to make the semi finals. So the story is
(24:32):
really remarkable, it really is, and it's important that we
share how difficult this win really was and the fact
that it came from nowhere is even sweeter in.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Tournament cricket Emily, and you'll be able to speak to
what happened in two thousand here as well. How important
is momentum When you've got games every few days, you're winning,
your winning, your winning, How important is that momentum.
Speaker 5 (24:55):
It's huge because it means he's confidence in the side
and when you're losing, and that habit is a losing habit,
and that confidence is low as can be. I think
what really helped us this time round was the gap
between the semi and the final was so short. The
players didn't have time to dwell. They were pretty much
on a roll. They were ready and their confidence was
(25:16):
as high as it's ever been. Over the last twenty
four to thirty six months. Gosh, there's been some tough
defeats and some tough moments with the size probably looking
at each other going what are we doing? But Finally
they've they've found a way to perform on the big stage,
and not just the big guns either. Yes, they're important
to any side. You've got to have your superstars performing.
(25:37):
But we had lots of players that we're back. We've
seam score not many runs or not do a lot
with the ball, come good. We missed players like Rosemary
Mayo during the winter and she was out with injury
of that turn. She was awesome last season. So having
your best players available and we've got pretty slim perkings,
(25:58):
I think that was a huge factor. And then that
confidence just they just enjoyed being in the environment and
when you win, got it for.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Those good You could tell that. You could absolutely tell
that of the eleven who played in the final, six
of them are twenty five years old or younger. Meli
Kerr as he Goes, Georgia Plumber, Eden Carson, fran Jonas
and Rosemary Mayor. Could that be the core of a
team that takes the White Ferns forward with greater consistency
and success.
Speaker 5 (26:26):
Yeah, I hope. So we still rely heavily on Susie
and Susie and Sophie Show to score the bulk of
our runs. But we shouldn't be afraid of bringing new players,
and the Georgia Plumbers of the world are so important.
We need players like her to learn how to score
fifteen hundreds in the longer format because we can't keep
relying on the older players to do it. And there
(26:49):
will be avoid when those singer players move on. So
the confidence that this win will give the group will
be enormous. And most of our batters are north of thirty,
and we've got to start blooding them in earlier. Then
trying to blood into Georgia Plumber, for example, at international level,
that was hard work. We've seen four or five years
(27:10):
of pain with a teeny bit of success and all
of a sudden founder confidence in the last six weeks
and we're seeing a different player. And when you become successful,
it rubs off on the senior players even more so,
very infectious when you've got things going your way, and
certainly when it's going the other way, the opposite way,
it can be devastating. So those six players, yes, we
(27:35):
want to build a team around them, but we've going
to each out as much as we can of these
older players so that the migration is not so great
and the golfer is not too big for the new
players coming in.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Very good point in a thirty two run, when that's
a bit more comfortable than your nail bit a in
two thousand four run. Wern Emily, did today bring back
some memories of that fine Lincoln nearly twenty four years ago?
Speaker 5 (27:58):
For you? Well, considering I'm quite old and remembering all
those moments, I look, you know what, when I jumped
in the shower this morning, I was just like, oh
my god, we've finally broken the duck. Please don't let
it be another twenty five years before we get to
see the celebrations and the enjoyment and the reward that
(28:19):
these players have so desperately wanted and us as fans,
and I haven't. Actually, it's a really good question because
I actually didn't think about it, and we have our
own World Cup group chat and the delight and the
sharing of information from those players, and you know that
there's tears of joys and we're seeing photos of champagne
and things like that. So it means just as much.
(28:41):
It's like a coach. When you've been a player, you
get so much reward when you see others do it
and share the sheher feeling of being a World Cup winner.
You just can't put it into words that much. And
we've had our time and that was great and fantastic
that these players, because cricket never gives you what you
think you deserve. These players have experience that the highest
(29:05):
of highs that they will ever experience today.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Indeed they have. Emily, thanks so much for joining us.
Great to get your inside and your memories as well.
Emily Drum, captain of the White Ferns team they even
called the White Fans back then. I don't know. In
the year two thousand who won the fifty over World Cup,
which was all there was then on home soil by
four runs against Australia in the final. Great to hear
her thoughts on this team that has emulated them in
(29:30):
terms of being an ICC World Cup winner nearly quarter
of a century later. It's been a while, hasn't it.
It's been a minute, as they say, twenty two away
from eight. All right, we're going to do the power
rankings in about well five maybe six minutes, so a
chance for you to influence them, that chance they was
running out eight hundred and eighty ten eight. He's just
(29:52):
or if you just want to celebrate a certain part
of the success from the weekend, whether it's the White Ferns,
the Black Caps, America's Cup, netball. Liam Lawson is getting
a lot of chatter around the place, Hayden wild. Great
to see him with a in the season ending World
triathlon event. Not enough to get up to win the
World Series, the World Championship or the world title, but yeah, incredible. Nonetheless,
(30:16):
did you also know I've just found out that we
are canoe polo World champions the pedal Ferns, our women's
canoe polo team beat Italy six to one in the
World Cup final or the World Championship final in China.
It's got to the text line binty White Ferns all
(30:36):
the way. I was totally wrong, says Chris. Also, don't
forget Alie Wallaston gold medal cycling, World Champs. Cricket will
be more positive this summer. The White Fans will draw
big crowds, Chris. I think you might be right. I
think there'll be a lot of people heading along to
watch the White Ferns play across the summer, Simon, says
Liam Lawson. Third fastest in the first round of qualifying
(30:58):
inherit to the back of the grid past salty old
Alonso and the teammate, his teammate Sonoda on the way
to ninth and two points. Credible stuff, says Simon. What
else have we got here? Finally we went as a
family to the Auckland f C game, says Stacy. Fantastic
and I can't fault it, but the black Caps winning
(31:18):
a Test in India is tops for me. Thanks Stacy. Yeah, look,
just on Auckland f C. We spoke a little bit
about it yesterday on Weekend Sport. I mean, huge kudos
to everybody involved in that, in that football club for
what they pulled together in terms of an opening weekend experience.
Just sensational. Just watching back some of the footage today,
(31:41):
not so much of the game, but of the crowd
scenes and the and the people and the people I
don't realize who were there. The a lot on social
media of you know, of people who are you know,
I guess you'd call them famous if there's such a
thing in New Zealand. So many people who are actually
there for the occasion. It was great. Yes, Stacey, I'm
glad you enjoyed it. We'll put you down for the
(32:04):
for the black Caps, speaking of which Sawne says, I
like that Will Young is putting pressure on that batting
order for places. Will Young had a very good Test
match thirty three in the first innings and forty eight
not out in the second to help guide New Zealand
to victory alongside rich And Ravendra, who by the way,
(32:25):
is an absolute gun.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Well.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
I think we've known for a long time that he
had talent as a cricketer. We knew that a long
time ago, but one hundred and thirty four in the
first innings an unbeaten thirty nine in the second starting
now to really realize that potential and he's still so young.
I mean, there's a guy could play cricket for New
Zealand for another ten years plus they'll have the IPL obviously,
(32:51):
there were all sorts of white ball franchises and outside
of the IPL chasing rch and Revendra. What I hope
and what I suspect is that he will want to
play as much for New Zealand as he can. He
has always said rache and Ravender. Where I've seen him
in the media, I've had the chance to chat to
him a little bit he lives in Wellington. I've seen
(33:13):
him around a little bit and he always always talks
about how much he wants to play for New Zealand.
So hopefully the I mean, you know, the money that's
going to be thrown around is enormous for him, But
hopefully he can scratch that itch and the likes of
the IPL and maybe another competition along the way which
(33:35):
also allows him to play test matches in particular for
New Zealand but also the other forms as well. Liam
all day long. In five years time, says this text,
it will be the Liam and Lewis Sharp Show, dominating
a global sport at the cutting edge of humanity. It
would also be good if we could someone could convince
Zach Brown to correct McLaren's team National in New Zealand
(33:57):
as well. After all, McLaren's badge is a stylized Kiwi.
Thanks indeed for that white ferns all the way for
number one power ranking. Tawa all the way, says the one. Yes,
I don't know. You might not have seen the footage
that I referenced with Sophie Divine. So four of those
players in that fifteen person squad are from the Wellington
(34:17):
suburb of Tawa, which actually is also my hometown, not
that that has anything to do with this story. And
at the end they got up on the podium with
their medals and spelt out Tawa. I think Sophie was
the t Jess and Mealy Kerr were the A's. I
think Georgia Plummer did the BULLU. But it took them
(34:38):
a long time to work out who had to do
what and how they would make those letters. But they
did Tarmar all the way. Indeed, Lynn says Liam Lawson,
America's Cup, black Caps, White Ferns, and Auckland FC. So
much to like. Black Caps first, says Kevin amazing victory,
Elie Wallaston second, what a motor she has, and Liam
(34:59):
Lawson I have third, a future world champion in the
making tech through here, all in capital letters, White Fern.
There you go, all right, sixteen away from eight. We'll
take a break. When we come back. I'll try to
get it right. I can't guarantee that I will. But
Piney's Power Rankings are up right after this.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
Good day our rankings.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
Yes, indeed, time for Piney's Power Rankings, rating the best
and worst from the Sporting Weekend. It is by some
distance the hardest Piney's Power rankings I've ever had to do.
I've taken your feedback on board. I've decided we need
to have some honorable mentions before we even get to
the top ten. And when I say the best and
the worst of the sporting weekend, there's no worst. Actually
(35:45):
honorable mentions to the breakers.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
Jackson Childline's throwing over the left turn tip score breakers
get it better.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
The odds are insurmountable. Now for the Wildcats, our MPC finalists,
the Steamers and.
Speaker 10 (35:57):
By Plenty are heading to the NPC final.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
And the Lines so rlate on Lions. I've gone one
step further than did last year. They are under the
Bummings NPC Final and also talk back caller Chris and
his wildlife yesterday. Cheepers, Chris, what's going on there? Mate?
Speaker 5 (36:18):
One of my chickens.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
She's a bit clucky. She's just lady. Sorry about that, mate.
Speaker 5 (36:26):
Where's he go away anyway?
Speaker 2 (36:29):
All right? Here is the top ten TENA is the
Heartland Championship Rugby winners, Meads Cup Champions, Tams Valley for
the second time, Tames Valley, Meads Chop Champions and Lahure
Cup champions King Country in an absolute for a lot
that's that came over and the rams when an instant
(36:52):
classics nine our pedal Ferns. She might not have heard
of them, but they are world champions. All forgotten. The
celebrations New Zealand apps for twenty twenty four beating Italy
six to one in the decider. Eight Auckland FC winners
(37:14):
off the field and on it. The new kids on
the A League block are up and running. The Black
Knights stride confidently into the light turnil winners in front
of a sellout stadium at go Media On Saturday seven.
Ellie Williston won a sensationally smart and strong ride once
(37:37):
again from Alie Wallaceton to claim gold two golds in
fact for the cycling Star at the World Champs in Denmark.
Six Hayden Wilde, one of the most talented men on
the circuit and Hayden why will take gold in the
Grand Final and buy a testance here by over a minute,
winning the season ending World Triathlon event to finish third
(37:57):
overall in the World Series. All right top half five.
The silver Ferns thrashing Australia last night when an absolute
hiding sixty four point fifty in Constellation Cup Test one
(38:19):
four four are the black Caps. That's a bit so
after twenty six years, New Zealander win a Test match
in India. Yeah, for the first time since nineteen eighty eight,
victory in a Test and in THEA rolling their hosts
for just forty six in the first innings.
Speaker 10 (38:39):
Three.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Liam Lawson from the back of the grid toninth in
his Formula One return.
Speaker 8 (38:45):
This is exactly the kind of performance Lawson needs to
put in and if he does, I can see him
as a Staffords teammate next year.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
When on the underplus outstanding debuts, are very very proud.
When done, you can be proud of you. SALESBA two
two is Team New Zealand back to back to back
in the America's Cup. The three peat is completely and
Everett's Team New Zealand.
Speaker 9 (39:11):
Win the Lieuis wint thirty seventh.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
America's chap emphatic seven to two winners over Britannia in
the America's Cup match. But I'm sure it won't surprise
you to find out what number is. Who else but
the White Ferns.
Speaker 10 (39:27):
Seven have done it.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
They have tied their interest. They hitched names and history.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
There you go. That's what I've come up with. How
do you feel about those rankings tonight?
Speaker 10 (39:43):
Oh you didn't really add much suspense to it by
having two interviews on the white ferns, and so of
course they were always going to be one, surely, went
Pete Pining.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Jeezu.
Speaker 10 (39:54):
Like if I was an elite sportsperson, I wouldn't want
to win this weekend because you just get buried down
at nine or ten, or if you Flenny and go
into the first NPC final, get the hearty mention of
an honorable.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Mean right, you're right. It's a terrible weekend to be successful,
isn't it. Or certainly when it comes to the power rankings, yeah,
you're you'd want to you'd want to have some clear
air around you.
Speaker 10 (40:18):
We've had losing teams high at the English football team
after they have lost.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
Higher than a lot of these guys. So yeah, that's right,
that's right, No, thank you. Someone wanted me to point
out that Bags Murray is the grandfather of Amelia and
Jess curR. Yes, that is correct. Bruce Murray, former New
Zealand cricketer and absolutely top man. The late Bruce Murray
(40:43):
is indeed the grandfather of the curse. Sisters U and
Leon from Melbourne emails pinety well done to all our
key we athletes tod this past week. You'll have your
work cut out for tonight's power rankings, and saying that
I'm really looking forward to the Fall Classic aka the
World Series for Baseball starting on Friday. The dream matchup
the Yankees up against the Dodgers. Too close to call
(41:04):
for me, but I'm picking New York to overcome LA
and six should be a compelling series. Nonetheless, Thank you Leon,
always good to get your thoughts on emails seven to
eight used talks he'd be coming up four to eight final.
A couple of pieces of correspondence here I want to
give a shout out, says this text to Hate and Wild.
So good this morning. Big win in the final race
of the World Series, blitz the field against the world's
(41:25):
fittest athletes. Also leading the Super tri World Series. Always
at the top. Haden such a great representative for New
Zealand in this series. It's all overseas and locations renowned
for large groups of spectators. Plus all of the triathletes
are from many varied countries. She hated wild is another
absolute gun and yeah, enjoying watching him do his thing.
(41:49):
I just actually realized that there's some Test cricket going
on at the moment in Dakka, and for no other
reason than the fact that I saw it come up
on my social feed, so I checked the score. This
is Bangladesh against South Africa, first Test, first day. Bangladesh
won the toss and said we'll have a bat. I've
just got a boundary. They're eighty three for eight. Eighty
(42:12):
three for eight, mate. I know I was gonna say
it's off forty six not out, but it's forty six
all out rather, but it's a severe misreading of the
wicket all some terrible batting and home conditions. So yeah,
So South Africa because they're going to bowl, bungle the
dish out sort of early in the second session and Daka.
No indication here is how bad or good the pitches.
(42:33):
But if you win the toss and bat eighty three
for aight is certainly not what you're after. Thank you
for listening in tonight. That is Sports Talk Done and
dust A Dusty Wartergrave back on your radio tomorrow night
