Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncie Wilder
Grave from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be We're joined now by Dame no Lena Todu
as we talk the silver Ferns and why not. Hi Dame,
how are you?
Speaker 3 (00:19):
I'm very good?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Thank you well, you sounded and as you should be.
What are performances you've had over the last three test matches?
And I suppose what happened in Perth that was the outstander,
wasn't it? Because I include myself on this, we know
what the Australians like to do when we get over
there after beating them here and they respond in kind
don't they?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, very much so.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
And that's been probably the history over the last three
or four years where even though Australia's had the Constellation Cup,
we've ended the Series two war but you know, for
some reason when we've gotten over here, as I've mentioned before,
they've either killed us or you know, we haven't quite
been on target. But for us to put that quality
of performance out in Perth.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
And actually win by that at margin is lomon good.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
And we play some real nice, skillful network and that's
that's probably the most pleasing thing It's been a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Made about the physicality and the aggression and what the
Australians bring, but I don't know if you could really
put that victory down to that. It was silky skills.
It's kind of almost like the rugby back line running through,
running gaps, not running the man. Is this something you
plan to do?
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, very much.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
So it's about creating the space, but also for players
to know what their own role is within the systems
as well, and knowing that maybe you may not feel
you know, you may not receive the ball in the
first instance, but when you present for a second or
third it opens up in those phases. So I thought
we were sublime, and you know, they were very hard
(01:50):
on the body right from the start. But I also thought,
you know, defensively, were starting to get really strong systems
and you know they're throwing a lot of changes on us,
but we seem to be on top of it and
able to adapt depending on who they put out on court.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
A lot of mid court for ustration from them. I'd
suggest the speed was part of that, and also that
the fitness. You've really been a stick with the fitness,
haven't you, And that's starting to come through even more so.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah, I mean, you know, a lot's been said over
the years and you know who's not in and all
the rest of it around our fitness levels.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
But when you see the quality of.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
Combativeness and also performance and intensity out there on court,
you can understand the levels that we need to run,
specially in our mid court. And you know both came
you order and we've got Cob as well, Cleiar O'Brien
and Maddie. You know they're running huge miles out there.
But the ability to play that explosive game is the
(02:47):
difference and repeated efforts. I'm real happy by how people
physically are handling everything, but you know our execution that.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
This stage is on top of it are you know, it's.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Just next level and looking forward to seeing what that
looks like in Test number four?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
What did you discuss before this third Test match? Much
of the same alterations. How did you go into this
Test match? Because there's a lot of pressure on you
actually do well again after those two outrageous victories in
New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Yeah, I mean it's always it's always a fine line,
you know, when you don't want to sort of go
back on history and we don't want to nullify the
things that we are doing well or sort of you know,
keep one eye open and one leye class and say
things that actually negate you know, our positives.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
So it was really about us doing our.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
Business as usual, making sure our recovery and our food
is really important to us, so we're on point in
that respect, but really looking at our opposition and being
clear about if changes happen, which we predict that they
would and they have been right throughout, that we could
adjust on the fly with our systems and make sure
(03:52):
that we can change it up. But attacking wise, it's
always going to be about ball posision. You know, if
you can win the position and keep ball in hand
that or no matter what sport that's that's always going
to be the difference. And obviously with our ability to
take the board for you to Gracie at the other end,
they're having a bit of headaches as to trying to
nullify her. So at the moment it's all coming together
(04:14):
quite nicely. But you know that tests for is another
biggie one for us, and just to consolidate and make
sure that our confidence still remains high.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Dame Annolling Toddu is our guest. I'm glad you mentioned
Grace Wicki, who's been an absolute sensation, but that's no surprise.
Do you think the better she plays and the more
she plays like this, the more likely it is that
maybe you Zella Netball might give her a bit of
dispensation along the lines. I think there's only one other
player who's been given that hasn't it. Is there an opportunity?
(04:46):
Would you look to do that? Dan Well?
Speaker 4 (04:49):
I think opportunities are always open, and you know, it
depends how it's viewed.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
In the perspective of that.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
I'm very clear, well, you know, people are very clear
where I sit around the full support of her and
knowing her intent to.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Be a best netballer.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
That's why she's taken this opportunity to play in the
SECN and I can only support her and know and
understand because of my experience how well she will come
back and with more intel and just that ability to
be better.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
So there's definitely upside.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
And you know, like when I talked previously about one
eye open and one eye closed, it's definitely about that.
But you know these are I know where we are
sitting at the moment, and you know it may open
up decisions to be made by the board or Netball
New Zealand and time will tell where that sits.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Do you lean on them? You've enough weight to kind
of throw around the place? Do you think?
Speaker 4 (05:46):
I don't know if I have weight, but definitely not
short and come forward. Let's put it that way and
put my perspective across. So you know, my thing is
about silver ferns us been winning Constellation Cup is the
first thing, but also you know, preparation for Commonwealth Games
(06:06):
and also twenty twenty seven Worlds. And I'm not dumb
to know that she's one of our big targets for US.
And you know, things do change when we don't have
her out on court, as it did a Netwle Wheel
Cup in South Africa last year, so we know what
that's like. And she's such a massive she's just so good.
(06:27):
You know, she's a wheel class player.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
So I will.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Always push for that and definitely not slow in putting
my thoughts across.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Next curb off the rank Noline, who is that when
you look at that attacking section, have you got another
upcoming player that you've got faith in that we're be
able to I suppose bridge the gap. Should we not
have access to Grace either through selection or injury.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yeah, we do.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Amelia Warmsley, we've had her in the side over the
last two seasons. She's a youngster, she's nineteen. She's still
available for the will Cut next year, so you know
she's a level of reading us and she's raring to go.
And then we've still got a couple in the levels underneath.
But you know, if the others are coming in, you've
(07:11):
got to make that move for next year, so you know,
you just can't bring them in and think they're going
to save the world. So that's sort of working with
our depth at the moment. But as I say, we'll
see what happens moving forward and possibly the decisions that
need to be made.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
How important has Briani Akleben in this?
Speaker 4 (07:31):
She's such a cool chick, you know, like she's a
head coach New South Wales and they've got a history
of women success, not only in the SECN but in
previous competitions. She's got that oddie attitude where never say
die and never expect anything from but the beast, so
that has definitely rubbed off on us. But she's also
(07:53):
an attacking master as well, so just having her expertise
and her understanding of international players is definitely of value
to us.
