Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from news Talk zed be.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
By.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Hello there, welcome into Friday's edition on Sports Talk. My
name is Darcy Waldgrave. November one, It be twenty twenty four.
All right, now you can put your Christmas decorations up
makay still too early, but you know a ven it's call,
isn't it.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
And at the shops you start advertising your Christmas fare
you do it? Not Octoby, There's something wrong with you, right, glad?
I got that one off my chest. Not but anyone cares.
We're talking sport now. It will be quiet about that
coming up into the next of the program me. You everybody,
oh eight one hundred and eighty ten ound you Lianes
are open nineteen nine to two. That is the text
(01:11):
line of standard text charge does apply. Toward the end
of the program, David Dome joins us, the general manager
of the Worth of Phoenix. Wow, Auckland, Wellington, Derby and
pro sports are cool. Why didn't they? I'd live to
see the day well outside of Super Rugby anyway. It's
just fantastic looking forward to it. Sky Stadium over the weekend,
(01:35):
will talk to David about how it's progressed, how it's going,
and he tickets they have sold, the dues, that don'ts
the where's the wat's, the wise, the so on's the
so forth. Before we get to that, we've got an
appointment with an All Black captain. Not the current All
Black captain. That'll be impossible. It's early in the morning
over there. But former All Black captain twenty plus games
(01:55):
is Skipper fifty poll fifty right on the button actually
games as an All Black captain the Crusaders Canterbury. He
coached of Canterbury's name is Ruben Thorn, Rubin Thor, Reuben Thorn,
and he joins us shortly to talk about this all
Black team that has been announced today. It's looking on
the money, it really is. And then we'll ask you
(02:16):
your thoughts. Is this as close as we're going to
get to the best team we can select? When I
say we, I mean Scott Robinson's got nothing to do
with us. But I love your thoughts on that one,
especially around the axis of nine to ten. Bodin Barrett
and I was inside Cortez get a total man at
the start of the seasons. Yeah, righty, But bro We'll
(02:37):
talk about that later on the piece, and I'll keep
it up to the cricket when they get out there again,
which is in around about fifty five minutes time. They
are at lunch, currently three down over that first two
hours of the opening session of the third and final
testings on winning the toss and putting themselves in so
they don't have to chase on a turning pitch. How
(02:59):
good is that? Right? Enough, let's get into this Sport Today.
Sports Today. English rugby captain Jamie George would rather throttle
Joe Marler than give him the cattle after the props
poorly worded social media anti hacker outburst.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
Really grateful to Joe and his loud mouth on social media.
It's fantastic. That's been the stem of the questions in
media this week. No, I don't Joe and I don't
always agree on everything, and we certainly don't agree on this.
I'm a massive fan of the hacker.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
She nicks start. There a league women's campaign away tonight
against Weston United, the last nine of them eleven away
games last season. Bart coach Paul Temble isn't interested in
the concept on an away curse.
Speaker 6 (03:43):
There's a different team, different season. I don't think kind
of those things normally follow overseasons and things like that,
so it's a fresh start for us. There's definitely things
as well that we're doing to try and help in
terms of the away travel, just those little one percenters.
Hopefully we'll see the benefits.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
The Schrodingers League player Sean Johnson is all over the
contribution from two Kiwi legends, Rubin Wiki and Mark Graham.
Speaker 7 (04:09):
We have a lot of ex players influencing the group
store to have them give up their time come back
in the camp. So she's two players and the caliber.
It's pretty special and I'm sure you know the boys
can get around it for a few photos and enjoy
that process.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
So Mark Graham kent at the studio that I tell
he was in bloody good Nick and the MIT's on
the boy. You shake his hands, it swallows your entire arm.
Huge individual and looking Rick Das and his older agent
Jordi Barrett still trusts his brother Boat and well that's
handy to say the least, because they're playing first and
second five eighth on Sunday against the English Peril.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
It's actually the first time I've been outside body in
a Black jersey, So that's exciting. It's been a long
time coming. But like he just gets about his work
and I'd like to think we've got a good combination
now that we can trust each other.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Handy trust basis of everything and that's sport today. We're
joined out now by a former All Black captain, Ruben Thorn,
as we take a look at the upcoming Test match
at Twickenham. Ruben, welcome, good evening.
Speaker 8 (05:12):
I trust you well, yes, I'm very well, Doust you
think you Let's.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Look forward to Twickenham. Is there a mightier place to
play rugby? You might say Newland's, you might say joe Berg,
But Twickenham. That is a venue, is it not?
Speaker 8 (05:25):
Yeah, No it is. It's very special. It's the National
Stadium and there's a lot of history there and it's
quite it's a little bit different from other grounds, particularly
the changing rooms and all the history that surrounds it
makes it pretty special to play it.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
When you first walk out there on to the turf,
when you first get there knowing the history, how do
you not cope with that? But how do you balance
that because that'd be wouldn't say emotional, but quite overwhelming.
Speaker 8 (05:48):
I'd suggest, yeah, it's a noisy place because I mean
the famous crowds and a lot of the European crowds,
they tend to sing and chant and do a lot
of that, and there's a real buzz around that ground
when it's full. But I think most players just try
and feed off that energy and it's pretty exciting to
be part of.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
The winning and the losing of the game. Where does
it sit? I know you're going to say forwards, because
it always does, But if you could expand maybe a
wee bit on that, what has to happen for either
side to maybe get the upper hand and maybe reach
toward victory.
Speaker 8 (06:16):
I mean, looking at the four packs that, particularly the
Type fives, there's a lot of experience on both sides there,
particularly up front, so I think that's going to be
a real type battle. But if we can get an
ede there and we can dominate the line outs with
hard and scrumbs and at the breakdown, then I think
our backs will have a bit more firepower. So I
think you did right. It's always upfront where it starts
(06:37):
and ends, and as a former Ford of course I
think that. But you know that type five battle is
going to be huge, and I think if we get
an edge there, then our backs will be They'll just
have a bit too much firepower.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Rubin Thorn join us from All Black Skipper, All Black
to boot. Looking ahead to the twicken and Test match,
Let's look at the loose forwards where you used to sit.
It's been fascinating to see that Sam Cames not only
been re selected, but he's back on the Northern Tour.
He's got the seven jump on his back and he's
(07:08):
flanked by a couple of outstanding players. We know how
good ardis Harvey is this what a Siti character. He's
got a lot about him. What do you make of
that six seven eight combination room?
Speaker 8 (07:18):
Yeah, well, I think at the start of the year
most people would have expected Sam would have been, you know,
perhaps on the outer he is moving on. We all
know that he's had his time and maybe people expected
to raise blood some new players in that position, but
he's just played really well. He's been super solid. He's
obviously still a big influence around the team, a good
positive influence on and off the field. So it just
(07:40):
shows that they do value his presence there and his
performance is a warranted selection. So Yeah, you can't argue
with that. Titi. Yeah, outstanding. I mean he really came
up at the end of Super rugby and he's he's
one of those guys who's been able to carry that
form and that influence through into Test match rugby, which
is really good for a young guy like that. So yeah,
it's a good mix. You know, they are playing well,
(08:02):
complimentary schools and quite a dynamic threesome.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Really, I'm interested in reving your thoughts around Sam's place. Look,
he deserves it. Yes, he's playing particularly well. We know
that Scott Robinson's having a love Affael with his shoulder.
That's fantastic. But surely in a tour like this, don't
you start blooding in the next generation. Is this maybe
counterproductive having him there?
Speaker 8 (08:25):
Well, you could argue that, but he still wants to
win Test matches and I'm sure there are other games
on this tour where they might make some changes and
try some stuff, but you know they want to start
the tour. Well, they want to start. You know, this
is arguably the strongest team they can put out at
the moment, so they're going to put that market down
first and then I guess, depending on results and injuries.
(08:46):
We'll see how the guys get their opportunities along the way.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Reuben Thorne we've got a situation with to Va and
has had time in the Jersey and he's really established
and grown. Corteza is another one. He gets the nod
to start. Camroygard only fresh coming back, but no TJ. Pernara,
Fhilly Christy's gone by the wayside. This has been quite
the explosion, hasn't it. What a rise and rise for
(09:09):
mister m What do you make of his contribution to
the side in that nine Jersey?
Speaker 8 (09:16):
Well, I like the way he plays, you know, he's
he's a strong halfback. He's playing really well. You know again,
he's sort of earned that spot and I like it.
I like the combination. I think he's obviously looking at
the future in that area and he's put his hand
up so he's been slepted there and deservedly so. A
little bit surprised not to see TJ in the mix somewhere,
but then again cam Brogard is again and not to
(09:39):
the future and someone who is working his way back
in and you know, he's a player who can make
a real difference off the bench, So you know, I
like it. I think it's exciting to see those guys
there and the Sleepers showing faith in them.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Oh, how we're going to replace Aaron Smith. Oh it's
the end of the world. Hold my bed, bad two
guys straight into place. What do you make of b
Outen Barrick coming in at ten, that combination of nine
and ten and of course the Maat coming off the
bench later. Is that the you think will work against
this English site?
Speaker 8 (10:09):
Yeah, well, I mean Damien's had plenty of opportunities at ten,
and I guess they are saying, well, look, whether they're
not quite satisfied there or not, it's hard hard to
know without hearing the coaches talk about it. But Boden's
just got the experience and he's been there, he's done that.
He can handle the big occasions. We know he's a
big occasion player. So they want to see him and
that cauldron have taken them and give him the opportunity.
(10:30):
So yeah, you know, for me, either one of them
could have got it, but I think they've just said, look,
Damien's had some opportunities, but we want to give bode
in this one.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Put your coach hat on, put your captain had on
put your player's hat on. Who do you want in
that jersey? Is it Boden or is it d Matt
guy front of it?
Speaker 9 (10:45):
For us?
Speaker 8 (10:45):
Reuben, look for me right at the moment, I would
probably lean towards Boden just because he's got the experience.
You still need a strong leader in that teen jersey.
And Damian. I think he's a brilliant player, don't get
me wrong, but I just don't know if ten's his
best position. I think he's probably more valuable either at
fallback or alay off the bench.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Don't think you're on that one, ruben Thorn. We're going
to finish things off shortly. But before we do that,
your old teammate Rasor Robertson. You play with them? Why
crusades to play with them? Canterbury? Do you play from
all blacks as well? I mean you guys know each other. Well,
he's had an interesting year. How do you think he's
handling the demands and the rigor and the balance of
(11:25):
being an all black coach, a job he's always chaerised.
It's been a big year for him.
Speaker 8 (11:29):
Yeah, Look, there's no doubt it's been a big learning curve.
I would imagine. But you've got to remember that this
group of coaches and even the players, it's probably gone
through the biggest change around in twenty thirty years. I
don't know. It's been almost a complete change from the
manager through that whole coaching group and certainly some very
senior experienced players that have also left. So it's been
(11:50):
a big change for them and they're navigating their way
through it, you know, and I think Raisers would have been.
He's been learning a lot through this, I guess, just
the extra challenges of test matches compared to Super Rugby.
It is a different environment. There's so much more scrutiny,
no second chances if you look purely at result. There's
been a couple that have got away on them, But overall,
I think he's building a group there, and he's building
(12:11):
a coaching group and a management group as well at
the same time. So you know, I think they will
they will take a lot out of the season and
be all the stronger for it.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
You know him reasonably well, you'd know that tells you know,
how reacts. Have you seen anything in the way he's
reacted that have suggested that's hit him harder tour or
is it just a case of that's Razor doing what
Razor does and he's adjusting as it goes along.
Speaker 8 (12:35):
Well, he's pretty strong in his convictions and the way
the way he wants to play and get things done
and do things, so he'll stick to his guns. Look,
there's no doubt there's been a bit of pressure on him,
but you know, I don't see any obvious signs that
he's struggling with it. It's just natural that there is
more pressure and more expectation and it's a bit tighter
at the top when you're in that hot seat. So
(12:55):
I think after the season he'll reflect on it and
there'll be a lot of learnings, a lot of growth
for personally around how to manage and all that group,
how to bring him together now, how to get the
best out of those players that you know, there's quite
a few guys in there he hasn't coached before. So
the more time they've been together, the more they work together,
I think the smoothest things will become.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Let's finish it off with a very predictable end with
the prediction who wins how much by.
Speaker 8 (13:21):
I think just looking at the teams on paper, I
think they all blecks. If they get this set piece right,
I think they'll they'll win. I'll say twelve and over.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I like that confidence. Let's hope they don't saw the
bed cheats in the last twenty minutes. That's our big thing.
Ruben Thorn, thank you so much as always for joining
us here on News Talks ab mate you enjoy your weekend.
Speaker 8 (13:40):
Thanks Artie Kiss.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
No need for the DMO. We've got the breakdown on
Sports Talk, News Talk.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Rubin Thorn there joining the program form all black form,
Blex skipper, crusaded, Canterbury player coach. So let's go on
and on and on. Great to have Rubin on this show.
Very positive around that. A lot of these guys don't
like to pick New Zealand by a big score. They
get all freaked out. It's going to be a tight margin,
so that's nice and going to say, you know what,
(14:11):
we get our seat piece right, we're gonna roll straight
through them. Not one hundred percent sure myself, but no,
who is You can't predict the future, but if anyone's
got an idea about where the strengths and weaknesses lie,
it is going to be Reuben form. The teams are
out We're ready to go. It's coming up at ten
(14:31):
past four on Sunday morning, live and free on News
Talkings ZB and we get Smith. Our mouth of rugby,
our voice of rugby, our lips and the larynx of
rugby will be on the spot giving it what for. Right,
We're rolling up the lines now for your calls. A
one hundred eighty ten eighty. Let's not make this difficult.
It's Friday, after all, nice and simple. Have you all
(14:54):
Blacks got this twenty three?
Speaker 9 (14:56):
Right?
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Th England?
Speaker 9 (14:58):
There you go?
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Do you want to run through it for you?
Speaker 9 (15:02):
Well?
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Have you got it already? Off by heart? The twenty
three that's been named to take on England and what
is a grudge match? England of course still smarting from
not getting the job done over here at the start
of the international season, lying in wait, keen to leap
out of the alleyway and mug the All Blacks. The
(15:24):
all Black's got it. I'll talk more about that shortly,
but I much rather you rang and talked to me
about that. Our one hundred and eighty ten eighty lines
are open. Nineteen ninety two, that is the text line
standard text charge does apply and later on the piece
will talk black and yellow, black and yellow taking on
black and blue black. It doesn't quite sound the same.
(15:45):
David Don Williams and Phoenix general manager joins us talking
about the great big Old Derby, the Kiwi classic O.
What are the names? Can we call it?
Speaker 4 (15:54):
Don't know?
Speaker 3 (15:55):
This is news talks it be but the start hell
Glass with the field.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Forget the riffs.
Speaker 9 (16:14):
Call you make a call on.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Sports Talk on your home of sports news.
Speaker 10 (16:20):
Talks have been talk.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
Never I think you.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Said twenty five Sports Talk on Friday night. And remember
one of the and the autograve O one hundred and
eighty ten eighty and so you can get through to
us in the studio, are still waiting for the return
of the players away from lunch out of the first
day of the Third Test between New Zealand and India
(16:52):
and the tasks they insert themselves. They're currently ninety two
for the loss of three, lay them out for twenty eight.
Conway gone for four and Revendra out for five at
the Chris Mitchell eleven and Will Young on at thirty
eight to the phones a go. Now we're talking rugby.
Why are we talking rugby? Because the English shower coming.
Speaker 9 (17:14):
Hey, Rob, how are you good? A Darcy? How are
you look? I think it's a good team, but I
still don't think it's quite right in terms of positional players.
I mean Satidi is an out and out number eight,
and I know we've got Ardie and his will player
of the year. I also think that I wouldn't have
(17:39):
fee now in the squad. His work rate's not good enough.
He goes missing, he's out on the wing and he's
just standing off all the time trying to put the
glory shot on without doing the work. And he's not
a line out option. Did you think in his.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Case though, he's been given a chance to say, look,
you didn't really impress, have a crack this time because
this is a big, big stage and we'll give you
a week. Yeah, I hope, but you're a bit limited.
Speaker 9 (18:05):
I'd love to see the stats, you know how they've
got the tracking stats on them between him and Blackadder
in terms of work great right, because if I watch
him quite a lot and he's he's often not there
to the breakdown and he's often like that last game,
he's often out wide.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
So I think, now, why is that? Do you think, Rob,
when you look at that is his decision is this
he's not precked and ready to go. Is it something
that's been shouted down to him from high saying, actually,
we want you out of here because we think you're
probably maybe more devastating one on one We slightly I
don't know what have you found him there?
Speaker 9 (18:45):
I reckon that he's used to playing in Seper fifteen
and like the Chiefs and that and that can all
be effective, but when you come up to different defensive
patterns and different pods setups, you need you need all
your six, seven's and eight's making tackles, and I just
(19:05):
don't think it's work. Great. Larkou's great, but I think
we really need Ethan's a great player, and he gets injured,
but we really need a sixties line out option as well.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Would you look to mover to provide there?
Speaker 9 (19:23):
You could do because Lord's coming and he's a big
unit as well. But that's what they sort of did
with Barrett. Didn't know they sort of you could move
Scooter there and put another bigger lock him. But I
think against the bigger teams, particularly South Africa, we need
as many line out options as we can get.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
So you're not a fan of having female out there.
I'm presuming you're like the rest of that. The question
around the nine and teen, is this the right decision?
Those guys are combos?
Speaker 9 (19:59):
Yeah, I think Look they have to give bear a shot.
The thing that does my head and with Bowden, and
I'm sure you've seen it watching it is when you're
on the tech and you're near the twenty two and
he puts a kick three, it literally does my head.
And he's done it already this year.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
You want to see him feeders bags right?
Speaker 9 (20:18):
Yeah, absolutely absolutely, and he is lucky. He's a master player.
But sometimes when you put that boot three, you could
literally tear your hair out. So why did you do
that when you've got it's like Caleb Clark outside you
and anyway, look that's just.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
My web and that's all there after. Thanks so much
for ringing and presuming you're getting up live for this
one switch the radio still in bed. You are good
on your rob It's like dedication mate. Thanks very much
for your call. I had an eighty ten eighty If
you'd like to join on in asking about the strength
of twenty three. Does it represent the best side, the
best combinations to take on the English? So there are
(21:01):
still two extraordinarily stern tests coming up after that. This
is not a one and done. This is the start
of an aggressive trunvert of games that will sorely test
the all blacks. You have taken a game by a game?
Does this represent the best side? We're going to go
around playing with players and moving players around into varying
(21:22):
positions that they're not comfortable. I've had the discussion up
here at the office. The long running discussion is the
twelve and thirteen right, Well, it is what it is,
and it's there. So Barrett and one need they know
each other. That's fine. Will Jordan is the best fullback
space envision time now on the ball, brilliant Mark Palia
(21:46):
on the right side and Caleb Clark marauding out on
the left. I think anyone's got too much of a
problem with that, the Barretttima combination. We all know my
views on Barrett. Well I know my views on Barrett. Anyway,
I am much more comfortable having the old head, even
though he might be a yard of pace down, much
(22:08):
more comfortable having the old head in there controlling. And
McKenzie comes on off the bench of twenty to go
and we're down by five. I'm starting to freak out
quite frankly, but there you go. He's in there to
start our Courtiz is just game fit, isn't He's match fit.
He's in there. You've got to like that. And then
we go through the rest of the pack. But I
love your thoughts on this. Uncomfortable essentially with what we
(22:32):
have got here, but I think the key here is
boding sensible too. Coming in at number ten, it's got
to be good as long as you can. Yeah, feed
your backs. As Rob was talking about before, ten eighty
lines are open. It is twenty nine minutes to eight.
Couple of quick text for you that we'll jump into
the phone calls. Great interview with Ruben Thorn. He is
(22:53):
still sharp, Christia, Thanks very much. Great to have Ruben
on the program. Go is a das he's on his
O Carbalo. Good weekend sports wise. Not sure this will
be one to remember. I hope I'm wrong. There's a
draw playing sixteen bucks for the English and the All
Blacks wouldn't put them past that word. Then we had
(23:15):
another lap of victory kind of from the English. Of that,
does it? I eight one hundred and eighty ten eighty.
I mean it's the bench of more interest, so it
does not work for me. But that's fifteen slash twenty three.
You see victory in the naming of this team. Of
(23:35):
course you do an all Black fan his news talks,
heb I one hundred and eighty ten. Out of your
lines are open. Let's get amongst Yeah, you know what?
Anything I do him?
Speaker 9 (23:54):
God, I do it.
Speaker 5 (23:55):
Yep, I'm screaming fast now, but I pulled on the line.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
Line's you see me?
Speaker 11 (24:03):
You know anything?
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Fucking yellow and yellow yellow? Is there a pop song
with black and blue in it somewhere? Do you want
to get your turn tables going on? Andy Dove go
and cut some mean beats up for us with both
of those in why are we playing that? David Doane's
(24:28):
going to join us shortly, going to Compedix general manager
ahead of the derby tomorrow Auckland to play Wellington and
the A League for the first time, happening again in
early December up in Auckland town as well. What a
stiti has been quite defined during this All Black season.
(24:48):
He's made every post to win it. How is he
going to deal with the media? We will answer that
right here right now, this is what is talking to
our very own Elliott Smith.
Speaker 12 (25:02):
First time in London. How are you finding your blacks
experience and the the English capital.
Speaker 13 (25:08):
Yeah, it's been good. I haven't really done in too
much exploring, but it's a beautiful place. Feels like there's
a lot of heritage out here and you can see,
especially were staying, there's a lot of culture. And yeah,
enjoy the cold, I enjoy the colt. So yeah, it's
been good so far.
Speaker 12 (25:25):
How do you reflect, I guess on that Japan performance
on the weekend today. You're one of the ones that
stayed over there and played as a squad. How do
you feel came out of that and what do you
take out of that heating into this week.
Speaker 13 (25:36):
Yeah, I think first and foremost has got opportunity to
get some minutes under our belts. A lot of boys
haven't played in in a few weeks so to get
some minutes, and then also a lot of boys that
wanted to prove themselves. And yeah, I think it was
good credit to Patty on his on his leadership as
well for something captain and he led us off at
the weekend. Yeah, it was a good challenge and Japanese
(25:59):
some a very strong team, so we're happy to come
up with.
Speaker 12 (26:02):
Her when played England personally, but the squad did back
in July. Do you take much out of that series
as you get into this test this weekend?
Speaker 13 (26:10):
Yes, said no, take confidence out of what we did
earlier in the season, and you know, we'll look back
to those moments and reflect on those moments. But at
the same time, they're a better team now and they've
had a lot of time together now as well, so
we've got to expect a new challenge and a big
challenge coming up for us.
Speaker 12 (26:27):
What kind of game do you expect from the Jicks
then they haven't played since then. You expect much of
the same from from what we saw back in New
Zealand and in the middle of the year.
Speaker 13 (26:36):
I think we expect a big, physical, physical, physical game
and we'll expect them to kick a lot, so we'll
work on our sort of make sure we protect the
board there and but yeah, first and foremost, we'll expect
a bigger forward pack coming towards us.
Speaker 12 (26:50):
So how do you reflect back on the year that's
been so far?
Speaker 13 (26:54):
Oh man, it's a crazy experience, say, surreal and something
I'm still, you know, coming to terms with and we've
got to pinch myself every day and understand that I'm
gonna I'm grateful to be in a position that I
am and you're just trying to enjoy it.
Speaker 12 (27:10):
So so I was looking at teamless a while ago.
You're playing Chiefs development back at the start of the season.
You got to the Chiefs and then the All Blacks.
I mean, do you look back and go hit the
spin a crazy ride the last few months?
Speaker 3 (27:20):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 13 (27:21):
I always talk about it over. My family reflect back
a lot. We reflect back a lot, and yeah, come
ble as far as crazy and I'm just truly grateful.
Speaker 12 (27:30):
So how do you at least keep growing in this
team and make sure this is a long stay in
the All Blacks environment?
Speaker 13 (27:36):
Yeah? Oh dad, My dad always says that's a challenging,
bitter thing in the team. So I think it's about
keeping my feet on the ground, understanding that we can't
get comfortable in this environment and there's boys out there
that are fighting to be where you are. So I
think it's just sort of mixing myself with the right guys,
right right people, and make sure I get bed every day.
Speaker 12 (27:57):
So you played number eight on the weekend. You've played
a bit of blindside this year. Do you have a
preference for which one's your first choice?
Speaker 13 (28:04):
Look, wherever they put me, that's where back to coaches are,
back raiser, and where he puts me, and I'll try
my best to do it justice.
Speaker 12 (28:11):
So it seems like the differences are becoming fewer now
between those positions, especially you know, maybe you sit down
on the scrum at the back of the scrum and
number right, but on the park itself, it seems like
the differences and the loose forward aren't as big as
perhaps there.
Speaker 9 (28:24):
Used to be.
Speaker 12 (28:24):
Is that how you see it as well?
Speaker 5 (28:26):
Oh?
Speaker 9 (28:26):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 13 (28:26):
I think whoever's out there and the loose forward toure,
we've all got our strengths and it's about playing to
our strengths and making sure the balance is right, I guess,
and at the end of the day's run hard to
take a hard and make sure we work hard for
each other.
Speaker 12 (28:40):
So yeah, Artie Savia, talk about the way that you've
come to the environment, and then perhaps that you know
the way that you've learned off him this year. Has
he been as sort of a mentor if used him
as a mentor this season?
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Oh yeah, a lot.
Speaker 13 (28:53):
See someone I feel comfortable with being around and someone
I can go to with whatever, even if it's not rugby.
So just to have their connection is definitely coming and
it's helped me a lot throughout the environment throughout the season,
and just have having someone down in an environment just
I guess, just calms me and allows me to go
to do what I do.
Speaker 12 (29:12):
So, speaking on this weekend, seventy odd thousand from memory maybe,
but more than that, English fans, have you got an
idea of what you might expect to come Saturday afternoon?
Speaker 13 (29:21):
Oh? Just talking to the boys, it's I hear, it's loud.
Got the chance, I've got the scene going on, and
I'm excited to hear that and excited to experience that.
So yeah, it should be a good should be.
Speaker 14 (29:33):
A good one.
Speaker 12 (29:33):
How do you block that out on on a Saturday afternoon?
Speaker 9 (29:36):
Anyway?
Speaker 4 (29:36):
You shouldn't.
Speaker 12 (29:37):
You don't know until you get there. But how do
you block that out and play your own game?
Speaker 13 (29:40):
I guess try and familiarize yourself with her, maybe make
sure we can we're able to think under pressure and
make sure our presses are right throughout the throughout the week.
So when we get to Saturday, all guns blazing.
Speaker 12 (29:52):
So and I guess you played on Japan and there's
a big busy three weeks coming up and football's actually
to be feared. But England Island, France. This is a
I guess, a good barometer of where this All Blacks
team is getting.
Speaker 13 (30:04):
Yeah, oh yeah, for sure. Got challenges coming up. So
the way we confronts up against these big teams is
going to define who we are and identity we're trying
to build as well. So I'm excited for these challenges.
We've got England for a stop, and that's where our
focus is at the moment.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
I'm quite sure of Ring. They know what they face
and what it's satiki. In fact, I'm not quite sure
if anyone knows how good he is up until he
burst onto the scene and Wellington fans do Chiefs fans
to excuse me. I'm still living in my black and yellow,
black and yellow, black and yellow space. It's another wonderful
(30:44):
player in the production line. This is every year, every
couple of years, someone turns up seemingly out of a
blue like, wow, where did this guy come from? We
know if you watched MPC right, which plenty of people
have this season. It's been great a the Cuiket is
back on the park again. Mitchell is on eleven between
one balls there it's got to strike great at fifty
(31:05):
two they're out there now. Three wickets down. Oh no,
the Menace of Washington Sundar has got the ball already
taken two wickets. Not unplayable this guy. Hey least black
Caps won the toss Day one of the Third Tests.
Just shivendy three wickets down, that'll carry on becoming. Next
(31:29):
we are talking about the Phoenix taking on Auckland FC,
Big Dabby tomorrow afternoon at five o'clock. David Dome gets
amongst next.
Speaker 11 (31:50):
Walking upon the Sea, inc upon the world. You want
to drug your deal? It's on a steeper then living
who'sa feels like Rudio.
Speaker 9 (32:06):
I was just.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
It's a massive game of A league football this weekend.
We have not seen anything this big in the history
of the A League when we look at New Zealand competition.
David Dome joins us now is the general manager, the
boss man of the Phoenix has been for what seventeen
odd years.
Speaker 9 (32:27):
This is huge.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
This lo called derby David Massive.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
The whole club's just so excited about it, and I
know the Auckland guys are as well. We've been waiting
a long time for a second team.
Speaker 10 (32:37):
We've often looked at.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
The Australian clubs with their derbies, you know, the two
Melbourne clubs and the two Sydney clubs going at it,
and we never really had that. But the amount of
interest around this game is incredible and the ticket sales
have really gone through the roof in the last couple
of days and we're literally right now we're opening up
more bays as we speak to accommodate more ticket sales.
So now look, just can't wait for the game and
it's going to be so exciting.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Give us a rough idea. What are you looking at?
How many heads you reckon you're going to get through?
How many bodies? How many bums on seats? David Well,
I think.
Speaker 10 (33:05):
As at least twenty thousand, maybe twenty one.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
And we now targeted our regular season record, which is
twenty four thousand that we've got against wen United, and
we came back after COVID.
Speaker 10 (33:15):
It was our first game back home.
Speaker 9 (33:16):
Up to COVID.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
We've got twenty four and a half thousand, So that's
the target now for the team, and it's certainly tracking
towards that. It will depend on how it fowls on
the game on game day, but the weather forecast is great,
so I don't think that's going to be an issue,
but it could it could be. Realistically, we're targeting our
highest of a regular season attendance.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
The game, David, is of utmost importance. That's what we
want to see. They want to see a quality game
of football. But you'd be insane if you didn't make
the most of this opportunity. So I've seen you guys
have been flying planes around, poking the borax. What else
is the Wellington Phoenix doing around this fixture to really
bring it to life and to make it more than
(33:54):
just a football match.
Speaker 10 (33:55):
Yeah, there's a lot of activation around the game.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
I know both of the supportive clubs are going big
on the game and they're having functions before the game
and after the game. Look, there will be a lot
of activity in the game and around the concourse at
the stadium, a lot of stuff for the kids. But
we've also got potentially, well we're hoping that we're going
to have something for display on the game and tying
in our relationship with our Manifano partner, Chatiawa. And we
(34:21):
really want to make the most of it because, as
you say, it's a once in a lifetime it's never
going to happen again to be the first ever derby,
So we're going to go big on it, and we
want to make sure that.
Speaker 10 (34:29):
It's something for the fans to remember.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Is this a time as well to encourage non football
fans to the game, to get them along based on
what this actually means, Are you looking at that or
more targeting the actual football audience themselves.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
We know that when we're selling more than twenty thousand tickets,
it's the general public that it's coming.
Speaker 10 (34:46):
Yes, it's the football fans are certainly there.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Then the sports fans are coming because they're interested, and
then you've get the wider population who are coming along
because they know it's an event and they know it's
something special.
Speaker 10 (34:56):
So that's definitely happening. Those people are coming along because
it has sparked.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
The interest of the general public who want it, like
I say, who really want to be there for something
that's ever going to happen again.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
So how the study of troops right now. They will
come back from Perth. It's a dog of a journey
before you're playing a local derby. Hey heavy are their leagus?
They're feeling all right. You've been out there audience, your
clipboard and your wrestle having you.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
David under the clipboard, not Gareth Morgan, but I know
you're right. It's a long trip but it's good to
get that out of the way early. So we've got
that guy you know, win in there, got our three
points come back. But they're recovered well. So they've had
a good few days of recovery. Chief has had them
out on the training ground a few times. We're confident
that the team's going to be in good shape to
(35:36):
take on to take on Auckland and look, I really
think it's going to be a great game. These are
two really good teams top two, one and two on
the table and whoever comes out of this not only
gets the bragging rights.
Speaker 10 (35:46):
But it goes top of the table as well.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Public service announcement, plainly, there's information you need to get
out there and tell people who are coming to the Dame,
and I know the first thing and to say.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
Get there early, get there early, it's a five o'clock
kick off. We're going to open up the gate ninety
minutes before, so from three.
Speaker 10 (36:04):
Thirty onwards, the gate's going to be open.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
Look with this amount of people coming, we know it
does take a little bit longer to get through the gates.
Speaker 10 (36:10):
Don't leave it to the last minute. There is activities
going on at the stadium.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
We know that both Wellington Yellow Fever and Auckland the
Port have marched the matches, so that'll be interesting as well.
Speaker 10 (36:20):
But you don't leave the last minute.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
I get there really and enjoy you entertainment around the
game and like I say, the full cust is going
to be great, so well, everything will be in the.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
Sun and another thing as well for interested parties. You
know you still got fans of the Phoenix in Auckland.
You do know that, don't you. Is it true you're
not coming back? What you've got a TBC possibly? But
is the Phoenix got a future playing at what one
of the air fortresses? Eden Park? You come back up here,
David or not?
Speaker 10 (36:45):
Well, we love Eating Park and we're dead keen.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
I mean, I'm hopeful that we'll play that Phoenix and
Auckland will play some game at eden Park in the future.
We are looking at it and we're trying to get
that across the line. But you know that that's a
three way conversation. Now it's not as easy as it
used to be in the old days. I mean, we
are going to christ Church. We are going to play
there at the end of gym. Really excited about that
as well. And then of course that's a three year deal.
So the first game is at the Orange there at
(37:09):
the current stadium, and then of course we moved to
one New Zealand stadium after that. So look really looking
forward to christs But you know, at some stage in
the future we can come back to Auckland. Outside the derby,
it's playing Auckland baby Edon Park.
Speaker 10 (37:22):
They'd be huge.
Speaker 3 (37:23):
So there's a will. It's just a matter of finding
out a way and hopefully sooner rather than later you
can confirm this what we know by the end of
the season or not. Yeah, I'd say so, Yeah, I'd so,
David Doan. Thanks very much, Hey, you enjoy the weekend.
This is huge for football in New Zealand, for football
in Auckland and Wellington as well. Roll on the derby
and everybody keep it friendly. Let's spread the daha, right, David,
(37:47):
thanks for your time.
Speaker 10 (37:48):
Thanks Darsie. I appreciate sports you.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Hear it from the biggest names and sports and men.
Have your say on eighty Sports Talk or more on
your home of sports and news Talks.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
It be eight minutes away from eight. That's the Ontington
Phoenix cap kind of right at the very top. Well,
what about the Auckland f C cat. What have they
got to say about the price of fishing? All this
talking about violence at the game. Surely not. We're better
than that, aren't we. Surely we are, Nick Becker, is
(38:20):
there any credibility around these reports?
Speaker 7 (38:24):
No?
Speaker 15 (38:25):
Nothing. I haven't actually seen anything at all, so I
think it just seems to become a mountain out of Molehill.
Speaker 5 (38:31):
Sorry.
Speaker 15 (38:32):
I haven't seen any credible evidence of such a thing,
and I don't think there is. I think all I've
seen over the first two weekends at go meters positivity,
Our fans have been fantastic, our official supporters group the
port have been amazing. I haven't seen any kind of
silly stuff going on. I think it is just purely
keyboard warriors and trolls. I think it's actually disappointing. It's
(38:53):
a slur against football fans and it's not what we
stand for. Our fans have had so much fun over
the first two weekends and I'm sure they will down
in Wellington as well.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
Yeah, CEO, there of a k IF c Orklan Football
Club at Nick, so away from what won't happen on
the terraces or in the crowd. What about Auckland Football
Club during this match? Coach Steve Kraka on what we
can expect.
Speaker 14 (39:19):
Yeah, so it's obviously another game, but it is a
derby game and it is for the fans. You know,
they want that bragging rights and obviously we want to
continue our run. But yeah, we want to control the game.
Obviously we want to we want to play good football
as normal, but you know it is going to be
passionate and we've got to make it that way. It
(39:40):
is a derby game and I think you know what
I've seen before in the derby's that we've been involved in.
It's both teams are really very physical. It's going to
be a fast game and what we expect from derby's.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
It's Steve Courriker then talking about the derby coming up tomorrow,
afternoon at five o'clock. I would be lovely if you
got a situation like this in the NRL, wouldn't they
be fantastic? But if you don't know by now, the
two guys from the NRL rolled over in the Arl
the Landy's Abdo saying, look, it's never gonna happen in Christy,
(40:15):
don't me. Doesn't matter how many bids you get off
the ground, Let's give us sixty million bucks that I'm interested?
Are you nuts? I mean, you've got a good product?
Great sixty million dollars? What is smoking? It's really depressing
and you want to read more about it. Trevan McEwan's
piece and sports Inside ins to hero dot co dot
(40:36):
inz well Worth a read pulls no punches on what,
quite frankly was appalling behavior from the NRL. But we
expected something different, of course we didn't. Awful It is
five minutes to a quick update in the cricket now
(40:57):
no further wickets, which is good because of only a
couple of minutes into the second session. Mitchell's eleven off
twenty four, young at fifty four off ninety seven half
entry good on yeah young e one hundred and twelve
for the loss of three through thirty overs current partnership
forty runs and if you extrapol eight, that would be
(41:17):
quite a good day. It'd be like three hundred odd
for nine. You shouldn't do that because it never works
out like that, does it. You said on one the
task they go in one hundred and twelve or three,
and we're looking forward to the next two sessions. And
I say we, I mean me because that's me. Now,
I'm going to go home. I'm gonna watch creckit It
till midnight. I'm going to crawl out of the scratcher
at four in the morning and come in here. And
I tend to put a radio show together. Andy Duff
(41:39):
will be producing. I apologize for you now, Andy Duff,
because I will be strung out, to say the least,
I'll probably wake up in team with dribble on my chest.
To be honest, that's sport and that's it. And we've
got one text to Darcy. Rugby players should be seen
and not heard. All you get is a media trained
word salad. Well, it's something, it's something. What kind of salard?
(42:07):
Is it a Waldorf selard?
Speaker 8 (42:12):
What is that?
Speaker 3 (42:13):
Apple's walnuts?
Speaker 9 (42:16):
It doesn't matter.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
Any you have. Thanks for reducing the program, Thanks to
our guest David Dome to a ribbon thorn, ribbon thorn,
ribbon thorn, to the calls, to the Texters, and to
everyone out there listening to us here at News Talks
AB back again tomorrow seventh through nine, the All Sports Breakfast,

(42:38):

the same on Sunday too, Interviews, calls, texts, all the
fun of the circus. And on that note, bye lad.
