Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk zed Be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
The black Caps have created Test cricket history in Mumbai.
New Zealand have beaten India three to nilo in a
series at home, winning the final Test by twenty five runs,
bowling India out for one hundred and twenty one in
their second innings. Last night. Ajs Battel finished with eleven
for one hundred and sixty to earn Man of the
Match hon as, while Will Young was named Player of

(00:35):
the Series for his two hundred and forty four runs
across the three Test matches at an average of forty
eight point eight. Will Young is with us well, congratulations
on a magnificent achievement by you and the black Caps.
Where does this series win rates among the highlights of
your cricketing.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Career, Hi, Pony, thanks for having me on. No.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
I think it's it's certainly got to sit right at
the top of certainly my career. But you know, talking
to the guys last night and even staff in this
group who have been part of New Zealand cricket for
a long time, you know it's I think it's sitting
at the top of the tree for everyone.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
It's yeah, it's been a.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Remarkable three weeks or so over here, and the boys
are just, yeah, so stoked with with how it's gone.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Having won the first two tests of the series and
therefore having secured an historic series win. Was there a
different feeling at all heading into the third test?

Speaker 4 (01:34):
You know, we talk about trying to you know, play
test matches, just game by game, and obviously the first
victory was the first time since nineteen eighty eight that
would want a test, and then our sites were set
on right, you know, we can actually win a series here.
And we went to poone and we knew the conditions
would be different and it'd be, yeah, a completely different

(01:54):
set of challenges, and we had our had our eyes
firmly set on winning the series. And then you know,
we celebrated really well after that, and we went to
Mumbai and you know, just that that final carrot dangling
of you know, no team has ever done this before,
and you know, we're in uncharted territory in a way,
and and the boys really excited at the prospect of that.
And again it was just a slightly different tapoone. You know,

(02:17):
the ball was bouncing more than it was there and
and and seem has bowled a little bit more. To
be honest, it was it was tough against seam what's
the new ball? But I think we just embraced the
challenge and and tried to keep it, you know, just
game by game and session by session and keep doing
our bits and and in the end, yeah, to be
where we are now and to be talking to you

(02:38):
three nil was just just amazing. So proud of everyone
and all they they put in over the series.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
You know, everyone chipped in at different times.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, I want to talk specifically about that in Just
to See. But but New Zealand came into the series
off the back of a couple of defeats in Sri Lanka.
I know you didn't play in those test matches, but
did anything change in India?

Speaker 4 (03:00):
No, to be honest, you know we've we talk about
you know, sticking to what we know and you know,
bringing our strengths to the to the table and firing
a shot.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
And you know we tried that in SLUNKA.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
But you know, you don't always succeed in sport, and
and sometimes you learn more from your failures than you
do your successes. And I think we went home and
we just had a bit of a regroup and and
just you know, tidy up a few things around, you
know what it is you want to bring to the
team as a bloke.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
You know, we're all all good cricketers.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
But you know, just remembering like who you're representing and
it's the guy next to you, and you know, just
little things like that.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
I think.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
And we went to India and it's always exciting playing
cricket over here, and I think the guys just felt
refreshed and read to fire fire a shot. Really we
had nothing to lose, and that's the way we played.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
It was.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
It was special, really special to be part of a
group with that sort of feeling.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
There were some standout individual performances in the series, right
in Revendra's century in Bengalaru Mitchell Santna thirteen wickets and
pune aj S Pattel eleven in Mumbai, but it seemed
as though across the series there were important contribution from
everybody who took the field. Did this feel like a
true team effort?

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, yeah, it truly did.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
Yeah, it seems like a while ago now, but you know,
the way rutchingbattered in Bungalore was incredible. You know, the
seamas in that game got us into the game to
start with, and then the spin came in later. It
was if you look at the averages of our batters
throughout the series, you know, they're all right up there.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
We've all contributed at different times and.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
Personally, like I've come away with the player of the series.
But it feels a bit funny, you know, I didn't
score one hundred. I just sort of, I guess, just
quite consistent. And that's what we talked about, is as
a batting unit was coming in at different times, firing
a shot, building small partnerships, because those small partnerships really
do add up over here. And if you can stop

(05:00):
that momentum and stop you know, to speaking cliches, you know,
losing the wickets and clumps, you can put some pressure
back on back on the Indians.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
And that's what we managed to do. And yeah, it
was so cool.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
Like obviously this last game with the ball as well,
the way a Jazz bold was incredible. He certainly likes
to bawl in Mumbai, so as you say, Poney, you know,
just yeah, awesome, awesome contributions throughout and in the field too.
You know, different guys stepped up at different times with
the ball, with the bat. It was just, yeah, a
real team performance.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Yeah. Well, you talked about your consistency and in a
series where ball did dominate bat, the numbers would tell
you one hundred and twelve wickets fell for two thousand
and seven hundred and twenty eight runs. That's an average
of about twenty four runs per wicket and amongst that
you averaged nearly fifty. How happy were you with the
way you batted and your contributions to the series win.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Yeah, yeah, I was really pleased, you know, to come
into the side.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
After doing some really good training.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
We were in India before the Sri Lanka series for
a game that got washed out, and then you had
to train away in Sri Lanka and you know, go
about my bits and feel nice and prepared and relaxed
and go out and do it and just do it
in my own way. You know, it's pretty awesome to
be honest, and you know, I've had some really nice
messages and things, and yeah, I guess that's cricket. I've

(06:21):
just got to keep doing that over and over again.
But no, it feels really special to contribute.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
To this thing.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
And was it particularly special to hit the winning runs
in the first Test, the first victory for New Zealand
and a Test in India since nineteen eighty eight.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Yeah, yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
You know, it's always just sort of the cherry on
top if you get to hit the winning runs. So yeah,
I mean, just to be out there and to be
involved in the win and you know, have that little
partnership with Rutchan to get us over the line. I
think I took a lot of confidence from that into
the rest of the series and yeah, managed to build

(07:02):
from there, which was nice.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
When India we're batting on the very first day of
the seat reason, they're losing wickets like they're going out
of fashion. I mean, did you sense even back then
that that something quite unusual and quite cool was happening
when you bowled your hosts out for forty six.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
Yeah, I remember, you know, with you know, for the
crickets listening, you know, if you can get a few
wickets and the team, you know, you all get really excited.
But we didn't really lose our heads. It was it
was quite a cool feeling, you know. O'Rourke and Henry,
were you know we're on fire, but we didn't lose

(07:43):
our heads. We just sort of stayed nice and sort
of calm and collected, and you know, it was intense
and we wanted to take more and to do something special,
but yeah, there was just this calmness throughout the group,
which which was awesome. I think that led on to
the batting and you know, posting a decent first settings
total and getting that lead and getting ourselves right into
the game was just that calmness.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
I think.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
I don't know if we expected to do something special,
but it just sort of, you know, we were trusting
each other, and yeah, it was It was a great feeling.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
You've had to be patient and Test cricket obviously will
and wait for your opportunities. You've taken them absolutely in
the last three Test matches. Do you feel like you're
batting in India, will secure your spot to play England
at home starting Ladder in the month?

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Well, I've got no idea, Poney.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
My my role leading up to this series and for
the last couple of years has been that reserve better
and if there's an injury, I've just got to be
prepared to step up in whatever role that might might
be in the in the top five, and unfortunately Kine,
you know, I had to sit on the sidelines for
this series, so no doubt he's he'll be fitting ready

(08:55):
to go for the England series. And if that means
I sit on the sideline and you know, a great
light Caine can step in, then so be it. You know,
I'll just take take it game by game and see
what happens.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
It's an incredible latitude, mate. Look, I feel like they
need to find a way, but I know you're not
going to say anything about that, but we Yeah, Look,
I really hope to see you in those test matches
back here. I just wanted to double check one more
stat with you. You've only hit five sixers in your
test career, and three of them came in this third Test.
Now that speaks to supreme discipline in your red ball game.

(09:28):
But did you realize that the lack of sixes that
have occurred in your test career?

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Yeah, yeah, there's yeah jokes to me so how they
reminded me of that quite often because he said, yeah,
I got off off the mark last summer against South Africa,
so at least I was off that and Lea must
get a few more of this last last game.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Brilliant And just finally, how do you celebrate a three
nil test sary sweeping in there? Because no one's ever
had the chance to do that, How did you celebrate?

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah? It was, it was. It was cool.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
We we got back to the hotel and we've been
superbly looked after and all the places we've stayed in.
The hotel staff brought out a couple of bottles of
champagne and just sort of sat set around in the
team room and talked and joked and laughed and you know,
reminisced on what's been a great couple of weeks. It's yeah,
it's important to yeah, to sit down as a group

(10:25):
and to sort of take stock of where things are
at and have a couple of drinks.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
It was.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
It was awesome times last night and throughout the series,
to be honest, to be.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Honest, Yeah, and well deserved too. Incredible what you guys
have done. We loved watching every moment of it. Back
here will congratulations to you and the team. Safe travels back,
look forward to catching up when you get back home.
Thanks very much, pony No, thank you well, well young
there out of India.
