Speaker 2 (02:41):
So the black Caps have created Test cricket history in Mumbai.
New Zealand have beaten India three nil in a series
at home, winning the final Test by twenty five runs,
bowling India out for one hundred and twenty one in
their second innings last night. Ajas Battel finished with eleven
for one hundred and sixty to earn Man of the
Match honors, while Will Young was named Player of the

(03:04):
Series for his two hundred and four forty four runs
across the three Test matches at an average of forty
eight point eight. Will Young is with us well, congratulations
on a magnificent achievement by you and the black Caps.
Where does this series win rates among the highlights of
your cricketing.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Career, Hi, Pony, thanks for having me on.

Speaker 5 (03:26):
No, I think it's it's certainly got to sit right
at the top of certainly my career. But you know,
talking to the guys last night and even the support
staff in this group have been part of New Zealand
cricket for a long time. You know, it's I think
it's sitting at the top of the tree for everyone.
It's yeah, it's been a remarkable three weeks or so
over here, and the boys are just, yeah, so stoked

(03:48):
with with how it's gone.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Having won the first two tests of the series and
therefore having secured an historic series win. Was there a
different feeling at all heading into the third test?

Speaker 5 (04:03):
You know, we talk about trying to you know, play
test match is just game by game, and obviously the
first victory was the first time since nineteen eighty eight
that would want a test, and then our sites were.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
Set on right, you know, we can actually win a
series here.

Speaker 5 (04:17):
And we went to poone and we knew the conditions
would be different and it'd be a completely different set
of challenges, and we had our had our eyes firmly
set on winning the series. And then you know, we
celebrated really well after that, and we went to Mumbai
and you know, just that that final carrot dangling of
you know, no team has ever done this before, and
you know, we're in uncharted territory in a way, and

(04:40):
and the boys really excited at the prospect of that.
And again it was just a.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Slightly different to poone.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
You know, the ball was bouncing more than it was
there and seem has bowled a little bit more. To
be honest, it was it was tough against Seam with
the new ball, but I think we just embraced the
challenge and tried to keep it, you know, just game
by game and session by session and keep doing our bits.
And in the end, yeah, to be where we are

(05:06):
now and to be talking to you three nil was
just just amazing. So proud of everyone and all they
they put in over the series. You know, everyone chipped
in at different times.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, I want to talk specifically about that in just
to see. But but New Zealand came into the series
off the back of a couple of defeats in Sri Lanka.
I know you didn't play in those test matches, but
did anything change in India?

Speaker 5 (05:29):
No, to be honest, you know we've we talk about
you know, sticking to what we know and you know,
bringing our strengths to the to the table and firing
a shot.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
And you know we tried that in Srilanka.

Speaker 5 (05:43):
But you know, you don't always succeed in sport, and
and sometimes you learn more from your failures than you
do your successes. And so we went home and we
just had a bit of a regroup and and just
you know, tidy up a few things around, you know
what it is you want to bring to the team
as a bloke. You know, we're all all good cricketers,
but you know, just remembering like who you're representing and

(06:05):
it's the guy to you, and you know, just little
things like that, I think. And we went to India
and it's always exciting playing cricket over here, and I
think the guys just felt refreshed and ready fire fire
a shot. Really we had nothing to lose, and that's
the way we played. It was really special to be
part of a group with that sort of feeling.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
There were some standout individual performances in the series, rights
and Revendra's century in Bengalarue Mitchell Santna thirteen wickets and
Poune Ajs Battel eleven in Mumbai, but it seemed as
though across the series there were important contribution from everybody
who took the field. Did this feel like a true
team effort?

Speaker 4 (06:43):
Yeah, yeah, it truly did.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
Yeah, it seems like a while ago now, but you know,
the way Rutch embatted in Bungalore was incredible. You know,
the seamas in that game got us into the game
to start with, and then the spin came in later.
It was if you look at the averages of our
batters throughout the series, you know, they're all right up there.
We've all contributed at different times and personally, like I've

(07:09):
come away with the player of the series. But it
feels a bit funny, you know, I didn't score one hundred.
I just sort of, I guess, just quite consistent. And
that's what we talked about, is as a batting unit
was coming in at different times, firing a shot, building
small partnerships, because those small partnerships really do add up
over here. And if you can stop that momentum and

(07:29):
stop you know to speaking cliches, you know, losing the
wickets and clumps, you can put some pressure back on
back on the Indians. And that's what we managed to do.
And yeah, it was so cool. Like obviously this last
game with the ball as well. The way a Jazz
bold was incredible. He certainly likes to bawl the Mumbai
so as you say, Piney, you know, just yeah, awesome,

(07:51):
awesome contributions throughout and in the field too. You know,
different guys stepped up at different times with the ball,
with the bat. It was just, yeah, a real team performance.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah. Well, you talked about your consistency and in a
series where ball did dominate bat, the numbers would tell
you one hundred and twelve wickets fell for two thousand
and seven hundred and twenty eight runs. That's an average
of about twenty four runs per wicket and amongst that
you averaged nearly fifty. How happy were you with the
way you batted and your contributions to the series win.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
Yeah, I was really pleased, you know, to come into
the side after doing some really good training. We're in
India before the Sri Lanka series for a game that
got washed out and then you had to train away
in Sri Lanka and you know, go about my bits
and feel nice and prepared and relaxed and go out
and do it and just do it in my own way.
You know, That's that's pretty awesome to be honest, And

(08:44):
you know, I've had some really nice messages and things,
and yeah, I guess that's the that's cricket and I've
just got to keep doing that over and over again.
But no, it it feels really special to contribute.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
To this time.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
And was it particularly special to hit the winning runs
in the first Test, the first victory for New Zealand
and a Test in India since nine eighty eight.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
Yeah, yeah, it was.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
You know, it's always sort of the cherry on top
if you get to hit the winning runs. So yeah,
I mean, just to be out there and to be
involved in the win and you know, have that little
partnership with Rutchan to get us over the line.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
I think I took a lot of confidence from.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
That into the rest of the series and yeah, managed
to build from there, which was nice.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
When India were batting on the very first day of
the seat reason they're losing wickets like they're going out
of fashion. I mean, did you sense even back then
that that something quite unusual and quite cool was happening
when you bowled your hosts out for forty six.

Speaker 5 (09:51):
Yeah, I remember, you know, with you know, for the
cricketers listening, you know, if you can get a few
wickets and the team, you know, you'll get really excited.
But we didn't really lose our heads. It was quite
a cool feeling, you know, O'Rourke and Henry were you know,
we're on fire, but we didn't lose our heads. We

(10:13):
just sort of stayed nice and sort of calm and
collected and you know it was intense and we wanted
to take more and to do something special, but yeah,
there was just this calmness throughout the group, which which
was awesome. I think that led on to the batting
and you know, posting a decent first inttings total and
getting that lead and getting ourselves right into the game
was just that calmness.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
I think.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
I don't know if we expected to do something special,
but it just sort of, you know, we were trusting
each other and yeah, it was It was a great feeling.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
You've had to be patient and test cricket obviously well
and wait for your opportunities. You've taken them absolutely in
the last three Test matches. Do you feel like you're
batting in India will secure your spot to play England
at home starting Ladder in the month.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
Well, I've got no idea, Poney.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
My role leading up to the series and for the
last couple of years has been that reserve better and
if there's an injury, I've just got to be prepared
to step up in whatever role that might be in
the in the top five. And unfortunately Kine you know,
had to sit on the sidelines for this series. So

(11:22):
no doubt he's he'll be fitting ready to go for
the England series. And if that means I sit on
the sideline and you know they're great light Caine can
step in, then so be it. You know, I'll just
take take it game by game and see what happens.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
It's an incredible attitude, mate. Look, I feel like they
need to find a way, but I know you're not
going to say anything about that, but we Yeah, look,
I really hope to see you in those Test matches
back here. I just wanted to double check one more
stat with you. You've only hit five sixers in your
test career, and three of them came in this third Test.
Now that speaks to supreme discipline in your red ball game.

(11:56):
But did you realize that the lack of sixes that
have occurred in your test.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
Career, Yeah, yeah, there's yeah.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
Jokes to me how they reminded me of that quite often,
because he said, yeah, I got off off the mark
last summer against South Africa, so at least I was
off that and lea muice to get a few more
of this last last game.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Brilliant And just finally, how do you celebrate a three
Niel test sary sweeping into be because no one's ever
had the chance to do that. How did you celebrate?

Speaker 4 (12:30):
Yeah, it was, it was. It was cool. We we
got back to the hotel and we've been.

Speaker 5 (12:34):
Superbly looked after and all the places we've stayed, and
the hotel staff brought out a couple of bottles of
champagne and just sort of sat sat around in the
team room and and talked and joked and laughed and
you know, reminisced on what's been a great couple of weeks.
It's yeah, it's important to yeah, to sit down as
a group and to sort of take stock of where

(12:57):
things are at and have a couple of drinks.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
It was.

Speaker 5 (12:59):
It was awesome times last night and throughout the series.
To be honest, to be honest.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
And well deserved too. Incredible what you guys have done.
We love watching every moment of it. Back here will
congratulations to you and the team. Safe travels back, look
forward to catching up when you get back home.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
Thanks very much, Pony, No.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Thank you will Will Young there out of India. I
think they hop on a plane tomorrow to come home,
might even be today anyway, regardless, I'll be back. And
the next order of business with the red ball, anyway
is that upcoming Test series against England with Test matches
in christ Church followed by Wellington and then Hamilton. Want
to get to that team in a minute you've heard
from Will Young. Let's celebrate this, hey, our eight hundred

(13:37):
and eighty ten eighty. If you like me, you've watched
this all play out with a sense of growing wonder
and astonishment. A three NILS series win in India. Not
only had we never come close to doing that, no
one had ever done it in the history of Test

(13:58):
cricket back specifically to us, though a month ago we
had won two Test matches in India. In two years
now we've won three more in the last three weeks.
It is the most extraordinary achievement in our cricketing history,
in our sporting history. Perhaps it's the Hellberg judges I

(14:22):
feel sorry for, because Howia ranked this alongside the white
Ferns World Cup one before we even start thinking about
everything else, all the Olympic success we had thankfully that
is not our problem. But speaking of conundrums and are
be keen fear of you on this too. One that
has been created by this series is the new Zealand

(14:44):
selectors now have to, I reckon, find a way of
keeping will Young and the team for the upcoming Tests
against England. When came Williamson comes back, which, by the
sounds of it, he will because if came Williamson is
fitt he plays. It's as simple as that. So where
does will Young bat? He's just been named Man of
the Series in India for this incredible consistence. See he

(15:06):
has to play right, but where where does he bat?

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Well?

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Not an opener, We've tried that. He averages twenty two
opening the batting and Test matches. I think we've tried
that and bind it. We've got a pretty good opening
combo there. Now anyway Kane plays obviously bat's three. You're
not going to drop rich In Revendra, You're not going
to drop Darryl Mitchell. You're not going to drop Tom Blundell.
He's the keeper. Hard to drop. Glenn Phillips his runs, spin,

(15:33):
bowling wickets energy pretty important. So that's the top seven. Really,
you could play all of them, and will Young bat
will Young at five, drop Mitchell, Blundle and Phillips down one.
But that leaves just three seam bowling spots, which might
work as long as you got some overs out of
Daryl Mitchell. I think that's what i'd do, Conway Latham, Williamson,

(15:57):
Revendra Young at five, Mitchell Blundell, Phillips at eight, then
Henry Southy O'Rourke, and the great irony of all of
this as would be leaving out the lo who got
thirteen wickets in poone, Mitchell Santna and the bloke who
just got eleven and Mumbai a jazz Patel. But then
again he got ten in an innings last time he
was over in India and still got to drop back here.
Different rules of course. In New Zealand. I read today

(16:18):
actually that New Zealand spinners have taken six wickets at
Hagley Oval in ten years, and half of those six
we came Williamson, and that we'll get the ross Taylor got.
So you might not need a spinner at all, and
if you did, you'd get the spin bowling overs out
of Phillips and Ravendra if you gamble on not needing
Phillips and you want to pick a fourth seamer, you
could do that as well. What would you do? Play

(16:41):
selector for us? Or just luxuriate in this victory? Either
thing is fine tonight Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty
is O number seven twenty three? Hello Kevin?

Speaker 6 (16:53):
Oh good?

Speaker 7 (16:54):
Even?

Speaker 8 (16:54):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (16:55):
I'm very good? Thank you Kevin? How are you?

Speaker 9 (16:56):
Mate?

Speaker 10 (16:57):
Hey?

Speaker 6 (16:58):
Not too bad? Of course, enjoy it and joined the
how do you say? Ben a key where you're watching
the author author victory?

Speaker 7 (17:04):
Just good?

Speaker 6 (17:05):
And of course the of course, given the have I
noticed is it just me? Or while we're celebrating, we've
also kind of given our transcendent neighbors the absolute mind
games more more to be cough, to be outright arrogant
heading into the upcoming Border Gavis Contest series. Certainly, but

(17:26):
what to three weeks?

Speaker 2 (17:28):
All right? So you think that you think that US
beating India and India will fuel the fire and them
and I'll go down to Oussi and and and beat
our Australian brothers.

Speaker 6 (17:38):
No kind of redemption. But no, I'm just saying that
it'll give the Aussies where Owen has given the AUSSI
is a bit more momentum to be arrogant to kick there,
to kick their kick their on their on their soil
in three weeks.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
So I hadn't, Kevin, and I hadn't even correlated the
things together. But you make an interesting point. I kind
of feel as though India will be hurting when they
come down to Australia. Australia will back themselves, obviously always do,
but I feel like I feel like India might be
hurting it. But maybe that that they, you know, Australia
might get the backlash from this historic series loss.

Speaker 6 (18:16):
Or who knows, maybe maybe it worth work for them
or against them, So you never know. But of course
I know that pakistanis and I'm absolute in the deep
in the city and the year river right now from
what I'm here on top of leve right now.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Yeah, and then yeah, one fifty nine for seven they
are now Pakistan and the fortieth over, so yeah, that's
that's not even a good score in T twenty these days,
live alone in a fifty over match. Thanks Kevin, good
to chat to your seven twenty five. I've got to
get a breakaway Ian, please hold one a chat to you.
There's a spear line for you as well. Eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty heaps on text, including an idea

(18:52):
that I am one hundred percent not a fan of
not a fan of it has been suggested a couple
of times. I'll tell you what that is and take
some more calls after this on Sports Talk, No need.

Speaker 11 (19:01):
For the DMO.

Speaker 9 (19:02):
We've got the breakdown.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
On Sports Talk call eight hundred News Talk seven.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
Eight, Nathan says, easy, blundle out Latham keeper. The next text,
Conway keeps blundle out. No, and no, I'm not at
home to that idea. I don't mind it. In white
ball cricket, not on test matches. You have to have
a specialist keeper. You can't have a part timer, and
particularly you can't have a part timer who also opens

(19:31):
the batting. No, no, no, unless that's what you're about
to suggest.

Speaker 10 (19:39):
Ian, No, No, I'm not. Jason, just ringing up to
congratulate the boys and young Will. He was on the
phone earlier just now, fantastic guy from down in the neck.
I wanted to give some kind regards to Ags. Fantastic

(20:01):
ball up. Never seen a guy like him. Now mate
joined the right team, played for News. He's playing for
New Zealand and he was born in Mumbai. I think
was he? Yep correct, Yeah, and most of the whole team,
you know, congratulations, it was good. I didn't I watch it, Jay,
so I listened to the whole thing on the radio

(20:21):
five days, right through the night. It was good, fantastic,
nice workout.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
Thanks mate. Yep, no, good on you. And yeah, I
can only echo your sentiments. Ajas Pattel a very special
bowler in conditions that suit him. He must, he must
want to pack up that Mumbai track and just take
it in a suitcase. He must love it. Over there,
a caller pointed out, it was just about to drive
into a very dodgy area. But had the time to

(20:47):
tell Andy that New Zealand won these three Test matches
in a combined eight and a half days three test matches,
fifteen days of Test cricket. Right, we're not here eight
and a half days total test cricket, and New Zealand
won three Test matches. Astonishing.

Speaker 8 (21:02):
Hello, Wayne, oh toney, I have waited so many years
for this, for ever. I think I grew up. I
think I was fifteen years old and ie thing. And
that was when Heavy five eighty six the Australian.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
Yes, yes, series, and it was the first time.

Speaker 8 (21:22):
If you watched cricket, my grandfather was explaining the game
and I just knew that I was going to the
Kiwi team. And that's how I got into cricket. And
you know, I go to all the games at the
Basin in Wellington, the female games as well. I just
loved the game and oh but oh that was just amazing.

(21:43):
I really didn't think we'd win three in a row,
but I voted on the thing and I said, yes
we would. Just you know, I had a pup.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Did did you give it that? You gave her the
boundless optimism?

Speaker 8 (21:56):
Yes? Oh I was lovely And to tell you what,
we'll young. Yeah, he was definitely. I thought about it
when they named him the man of the serious talk
about it. He was the only consistent vestment through the
whole series. And he's always head to beck up the
cane and he has to be. He has to be
in the teenth Who's expense? So I've got the solution here.

(22:21):
So you've got Ben Filips. Okay, yes, So he bowls
and over and then he keeps the next time?

Speaker 4 (22:30):
Who keeps?

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Who keeps? When he's bowling who keeps he's bowling there. Well,
I've always said, I've always sad way and I must
have always said that nothing should be off the table
in conversations about innovation. That would be very innovative, my friend.

Speaker 8 (22:47):
But it was a team. It was a team ethics.
Every player stood up in every game at some stage
and I'm really proud of them.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
May yeah, good stuff, me too, mate. And then eighty
five series you talk about there, Yeah, we must be
the same age, I think because I was in my
mid teens then too, and uh yeah, just yeah, astonishing.
I think this that has always been my favorite Test series,
eighty five back into eighty five in Australia, Richard Hadley
thirty three wickets in that series, Martin Crow big Ton

(23:17):
at the Gabba. But I think this one is starting
to knock on the window of that. Thanks Wayne, good
to chat you a question here before we get to you, Jamie,
why would you pick Williamson? Says Dave. He has no
central contract and the team are coming home and off
the back of a three mil series win can beat England. Dave,
all I would say, I think I just refer you
to the numbers thirty two Test centuries, approaching nine thousand

(23:43):
Test runs, only about fifteen or sixteen guys in the
history of Test cricket have scored that many. I have
always said that Came Williamson is one of those players
who exists above the selection line. When you're selecting a team.
There are certain players who, if they are fit and available, play,
they just do. And Kan Williamson is one of those.
He comes back in somebody else drops out. If you

(24:06):
keep will young, Jamie.

Speaker 7 (24:09):
High, great, gay, If I know you're going all good.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
I'm going great. Thanks mate. How are you getting on?

Speaker 7 (24:15):
Oh? Yeah, that just you just can't believe, you know,
what they've achieved and just turn around from for most
of the rest of the year they've been pretty poor.
But but you know, just over the last three weeks
has just been amazing. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
I agree, and I mean the point you make there
as well, Jamie. It's even more remarkable given the lead
in I was going to say, the lead in form,
the leading lack of form. The whole game against Afghanistan
was washed out. Then they lost twice, recently convincingly to
Sri Lanka. Nobody expected this, mate.

Speaker 7 (24:48):
Yeah, that's right, and I probably probably go along with
your suggestion play with you. Yeah, they had to give
a six s batsman bundle at seven in four ballers.
I mean probably bit hard on Glenn Phillips maybe, but
but yeah, I think that's probably years is probably that
I think there might be the way to go.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
I think in christ Church. I think in christ Church
it probably is Jamie with the with Christ. I mean,
like I said before much have you heard it, but
only six wickets have been taken by New Zealand spinners
in ten years at Hagley Oval. So yeah, and so
you might say, okay, well we're probably going to need
if we need a spinner, You've got Revendra. He can bolspin.

(25:29):
So you could say to Glen Philips say, sorry, Glen,
you sit this one out. You're back in contention for
Wellington and Hamilton. But you pick four seamers. You sow
that you've got Saudi Henry O'Rourke plus maybe Sears would
be your fourth one.

Speaker 7 (25:42):
Yeah, I mean you can maybe go another spinner, like
maybe maybe set in that but unlikely I know, But
but I mean you can't. Yeah, you can overlook what
the what the spinners and a movie has been a
lot more helpful and I wish we'd have could have
pictures like that music.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
Yeah, I've bet your ideas for Telvis is that, dude,
Betty wish is I mean, what an incredible, incredible oddity
that Ahs Bettel has never taken a Test wicket in
New Zealand. It's remarkable, isn't it.

Speaker 7 (26:14):
I mean, it's just it's just just the way pictures are,
you know, I mean the climate conditions. It's yeah, we
can't up there, but yeah, there would be call these
one or two wickets there.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, indeed it would be great if yeah, if you
just got one here, wouldn't it just even if you
just got one somehow? I mean, Ross Taylor's got a
wicket in New Zealand and Hstel has it. It's crazy,
it's crazy stuff. I got on you, Jamie, thanks for
calling him. Mate. It sounds like you're enjoying it just
as much as the rest of us. Really appreciate your right,
your call if you text to get to before we
get to the tab and Thad Taylor it's Melbourne cup Eve.

(26:49):
Of course, let's not forget that pony ree Will Young.
Surely we have a squad of specialist batters and we
pick the most suitable for the conditions, just like we
do specialist bowlers. It's an interesting point. I don't know
that we do. I think batters are across conditions. You
pick your you pick your top six or seven, depend

(27:09):
as the case may be, because they are your best
batters across all conditions. You might perhaps if you were
choosing between a couple of players, say, Okay, well he's
a better player of spin, and if we're playing in Asia,
then he's your guy. But I, yeah, I think it
is quite different. It's an interesting point, though, interesting point. Jason,
what do you think of Blundell coming in at six?

(27:31):
Surely we should have Caine and Will Young batting in
the top six with the keeper coming in at seven,
like most other teams do, says Ben. Yeah, I guess
that means. But then you've got to drop somebody above
those two, don't you, Ben, And it's not Kine and
it's not Ravendra. I don't think, and be hard to
drop Daryl Mitchell. Your openers are there, so I think
the only way to shoehorn Will Young in is by pushing.

(27:56):
It's two ways. You keep the top seven as it
is and add Will Young, so that Phillips spats at
eight and then have three seamens. Why you say goodbye
to Glenn Phillips, which I think would be so tough
on him. So he comes out the top seven. I

(28:17):
think Young probably bats at five, Mitchell comes down to six,
Blundle at seven, then four seemers. I think that's the
way you do it, and there's no tidy way of
doing it. There's pros and cons for In fact, it
might be that they get back here and say, hey, well,
great work in India, mate, but you're the one who's

(28:41):
going to miss out. Paul says Biny the most threat
on formers Devon Conway. I'm not sure that's actually true anymore.
I don't know that he is under threat for form
many more. Devin Conway in India ninety one, seventeen seventy six,

(29:02):
seventeen four and twenty two, two hundred and twenty seven
runs at an average of nearly thirty eight. I think
he's found his form again, and I think, like I
said before, I think you've I kind of think we've
done the well young opening thing. Carl says, and join
the conversation. In christ Church, we have so few wickers

(29:23):
being taken by spinners because we don't play them. It's
so right, Cal, Australia always bigg a spinner. It feels
like we should as well. The interesting point, Cal, very
interesting point. All right, we want we better move because
I want to get you some hot tips before the
Melbourne Cup tomorrow, the race that stops two nations, the
one hundred and sixty fourth running of the Melbourne Cupps

(29:44):
tomorrow around five o'clock New Zealand time at Flemington. Sat
Taylor with us from the TAB. Fag great to Jet
you looking for some advice here, mate, But first of all,
how big a day is this for you? Guys? How
big a day for the TAB? Is this your biggest
day of the year.

Speaker 8 (29:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (29:59):
Absolutely, it is the biggest day of the year for
the TAV There's no doubt about that.

Speaker 7 (30:02):
Look.

Speaker 11 (30:02):
Cup Day down in christ Church coming up and around
week's time will be the second biggest day the Trotting
Cup they're held at Addington, But certainly the Melbourne Cup
is the biggest day for the New Zealand Tab. Still. Look,
just to give you some idea, you know, the total
turnover on the day for just racing will be up
close to thirty million dollars. The sales on the Melbourne

(30:24):
Cup alone will be hovering between thirteen and fourteen million.
And in the busiest time before the Melbourne Cup tomorrow
afternoon we'll be processing around close to seven thousand bits
a minute for the Melbourne Cup. So speaking of busy
to be, all hands to the pump come Melbourne Cup time.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
Incredible all right. No New Zealand trained horses last year
free this year? Who are they and what are their chances?

Speaker 11 (30:47):
Yeah, that's the first great thing that we had, got
some great Kiwi interest in the race. There has been
a little bit scant in terms of New Zealand trained
horses in the Melbourne Cup in the last few years,
just for the way the Melbourne Cup has gone sort
of heading towards the European Stars. But we do have
three runners in the race. Was unfortunately going to be
four before Mahara and failed a veterinary scan prior to

(31:09):
the race of Maha. Rajan is unfortunately not going to
be there. But we do have three runners. I'd say
the best of them would be sharp and smart. It's
Ause trained by Graham Rogers Graham and Debbie Rogerson. He
ran a very good third in the Mooney Valley Gold
Cup last time out, getting home strongly, which is what
you want to see as they're stepping up to the
two miles of a Melbourne Cup and book he won
our Derby, he placed at a VFC Derby's coming back

(31:32):
to formers Sharp and Smart. Look he's still sixty to one.
I'm not going to suggest he's a leading charts, but
he is Our best chance will be at a long shot.
Chance is Sharp and Smart. The other two runners their Positivity,
trained by Andrew Foresman. Look, she's been very good. The
last start was a little bit disappointing and then she's
out there at a one hundred to one. Is Positivity,

(31:54):
but her form leading if you can forgive her last
start failure form prival that had been very good. So
I few willing to entertain the hundred and ones around Positivity.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
Now.

Speaker 11 (32:03):
Other horse is a horse called trustin You. He's a
really a very solid galloper. He never puts in a
bad race where he's out of his depth from a
class perspective. He's trained by Bruce Wallace and Grant Cooksley,
but he's been running some very good races in Sydney,
and some strong races coming out of fourth and a
cint ledger up there in Sydney, and look he gets
his chance. It's great to have a runner in the

(32:24):
Melbourne Cup. Again, I'm probably padding because they are one
hundred to one in this market. Would be surprised to
see a Kiwi win the Melbourne Cup. But it is
great to have three Kiwi runners and as I say,
the best of those three will be sharp and smart.
I see him sitting in around sixty to one. He's
number six in the.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Book tomorrow, all right, leck zooman. Then on the favorites,
the race favorites. Who did the punters like? Who do
you like?

Speaker 8 (32:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (32:46):
Look, I mean the Buckaroo's been sort of setting the
benchmark this so far this season. It was a very
good second in the Melbourne Sorr in the Corefield Cup
last so much to a traditional leader to a Melbourne Cup.
But he then he came out and drew barrier twenty
one of twenty four, which has probably just indented his chance.
As no surprise where he's going to get to in
the run, he will get back a long way and

(33:06):
whether he can make a big run. Bukaruba trained by
former Key we say former key we Kiwi Chris Waller
who trains now in Sydney, the great trainer Chris WALLACEI
Buckaroo has been favorite for a long time but just
been taken over just in the last of twenty four
hours by all's called vau Barne, who brings some brilliant
European form over came over last year and he was

(33:28):
very very well backed. I think he almost started favorite
in the race last year and just didn't do it
for whatever reason. But his trainer Willie Mullins is an
absolute genius, thinks he's got vau Barn better this time
and look chased over horse champion called kit Brios last
time out and there up there at the cur and
I think Willie Mullens thinks he think has vau Barn
ready to go at his second crack in a Melbourne Cup.

(33:50):
But the Europeans do sort of hold the key.

Speaker 9 (33:52):
Here.

Speaker 11 (33:52):
The likes of one smooth operator for Brian Allison, Craig
Williams the great was he jockey Board he won the
Geelong Cup and the lead up to this He'll be
your player at eight dollars fifty, As were the likes
of c King, who won the Bendigo Cup only about
seven seven or so days ago into this at thirteen dollars,
so it's not surprised in the Europeans that to hold

(34:14):
the hand here you would say with the likes of
vobarn one smooth operator and seeking of the ossie changes
of Dozy trained by James Cummings and the grandson of
the great Bark Commings gave does who run on the
Saturday just a couple of days ago before the Melbourne Cup,
just like his grandfather would have and Doze he's been

(34:34):
very well backed in the race. And then a horse
called Okeita Sushi trained by Kieren Marer won the Mooney
Valley Gold Cup. Last time we opened him up around
twenty three dollars. He's worked his way into fourteen dollars.
But of a move for a horse called Okeita Sushi
trained by Karen Marr.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
All right, some good horses to look at. There a
lot of people that only bet once a year and
it's on Melbourne Cup Day. It's there once a year.
Flutter if there are first time punters listening, and I
know there will be any advice for them.

Speaker 11 (35:03):
Yeah, I mean the great thing about the Melbourne cupp Is,
you're in with the charts, rule them with a chance.
So look, their race has changed so much over the
last twenty five years, Jason. I mean we would have
recognized a lot of the horses, you know, twenty five
years ago they would have been old Australian and the
Kiwi stayers, but you sort of headed that European way
and they are generally the stronger staying horses. So if

(35:25):
I could give you one piece of advice to entertain
those European developers, I think that they will be so
one of them will be saluting the judge, which one
wouldn't be one hundred percent sure, but the European staying
forms are very very strong, So look for some of
those European horses will be My advice certainly put them
in New Quanella's entr effectors because they've got the recipe
now to be competitive of a Melbourne Cup and they have

(35:46):
been for a fair few years now.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
Great advice from yours always. Thanks for joining us on
Melbourne Cup Eve, say it all the best for a
great day.

Speaker 11 (35:54):
Tomorrow, exciting Jason, Thanks for having me, and good luck
to every run out there tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Yeah, good luck to you too, thanks indeed, Sad Taylor.
There from the tab one hundred and sixty fourth running
of the Melbourne Cup tomorrow around five o'clock New Zealand time.
The biggest race day on that side of the Tasman
and on the side of the Tasman. Two seven forty five.
All right, let's get a breakaway when we come back.
It's it's been tough today. There's been a lot to

(36:18):
try and get our heads around. But we've ranked them,
We've rated them. Piney's Power Rankings coming up right after.

Speaker 9 (36:24):
This Ladies Power Rankings, say Monday night time for Piney's
Power Rankings, rating the best, the worst and the in between.

Speaker 2 (36:37):
Bits from the Sporting weekend, and it is a stacked field,
a stacked field to choose from this weekend. Ten ten
the Wellington Phoenix.

Speaker 12 (36:46):
It's an opening night when for Western United, a game
in which they trailed only to unleash a.

Speaker 2 (36:52):
Four gold flurry, a tough start for the Phoenix women
and a derby loss to the men which we will
reference again soon. Nine nine the Key West. This might
be the only chart cutter cutter. A valiant fight back
from twenty four nil down to twenty four all just

(37:13):
not enough in the end as Tonga got there. Twenty five,
twenty four, eight eight is f a Cup halftime entertainment
now Wickham Wanderers provided not your usual halftime spectacle, instead
opting to let a guy who was on his stag
dude dressed up as Elsa from Frozen sing one of
the famous songs from that movie, ca canny.

Speaker 10 (37:42):
L L.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
Yeah, hindsight, that's probably a little bit high at eight
seven seven, Liam Lawson and Laws and bed Night, how
much it.

Speaker 8 (37:57):
Comes home to take tenth place for Sergio Perez behind.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
Them back in the points and a chaotic Brazilian Grand
Prix and importantly ahead of his rival Sergio Faire is six.
The Kiwi Ferns are at six shaping the kick ten
does kick out line?

Speaker 11 (38:13):
Looking for Wiki?

Speaker 8 (38:14):
Great take that fee not done?

Speaker 12 (38:17):
That's going to your debut to remember whom kenzie Wiki?

Speaker 2 (38:20):
She's got a hat trick for the Kiwi Ferns, a
dominant display to book a final with Australia for the
Pacific Championship Crown this coming Sunday. Buy into the top
half the breakers. What a performance from New Zealand.

Speaker 12 (38:34):
They improved to five and two and proved their nose flash.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
In the pan, absolutely destroying Adelaide and sitting nicely at
the top of the a nb L letter four four
is our man. Chris was waiting Hords one moment. That
is all he needs Forest Man. Mine is then again
another goal eight in the Premier League this season, already

(39:00):
through just ten games, and Forrest up to third on
the Premier League ladder. In a free the All Blacks.

Speaker 10 (39:13):
It's away.

Speaker 9 (39:15):
It is away in the All Blacks when I.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
Throwler at looking twenty four, twenty two and three tests
to nil against England this calendar year two two. Auckland FC,
New Zealand Football's blue bragging rights for the A leagues.
New Boys, you can't deny. They have started brilliantly, three

(39:42):
wins from three and top of the A League ladder.
But there's no way they were going to be number one,
because that, of course is the black Caps, from the
historic lows of Sri Lanka to the highest they have
ever scaled.

Speaker 9 (39:56):
Yeah, it's all over.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
It's New Zealand. They blink talt Indiana Test Series.

Speaker 3 (40:04):
While it's quite phenomenal. Rabi after leaving Sri Lanka in
disappointment and this bunch of men. They believe, that coaching
staff believed. I'm not sure how many others did. This
is the greatest Test series when in New Zealand Test
cricket history.

Speaker 2 (40:20):
Couldn't put it better myself, Simon Dall, how do you
feel about the order of the power rankings tonight?

Speaker 12 (40:27):
Hey, there was a pretty sound order, Pinty. Obviously the
black Caps were even not going to be number one.
Now I've got to see. I send you like little
wee scripts to help you get your hit around the
audio cuts.

Speaker 2 (40:37):
I know what you're going to say.

Speaker 12 (40:39):
And I know you completely ignored the Auckland f C one,
which I'm going to say now to Auckland f C,
the home of New Zealand football.

Speaker 2 (40:49):
Yeah see, I always just take your scripts as a
rough guide.

Speaker 12 (40:53):
Well you should do more than that, mate, They are
highly thought out pieces of knowledge gems most of the
time that you should take more seriously.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
Sure, Auckland Seymour seriously, I've taken Auckland FC very serious.
Don't you worry about that? Don't you worry about that?
We must mention and I'm sure you've seen this. The
wonderful work of their marketing team who got an electronic
billboard up outside sky Stadium as everybody was leaving that
game that had welcome to Ellington. We've taken the w

(41:29):
back to Auckland. Masterful, absolutely brilliant banter. The rivalry after
one game well and truly alive. Yeah, it was really
only the black Caps that kept Auckland FC the Black
Knights out of top spot. But well, who knows what
the rest of the season might hold. Piney's power rankings

(41:50):
are back same time next Monday. No, no, what do
we nineteen fifty six holiday? Why I'm using that as
the method of telling the time. It's four minutes away
from eight o'clock evening. Piney says, ret, what an incredible
display of cricket from our black Caps after a two
nil series defeat to a three nil series win. Just unbelievable.

(42:13):
I couldn't be any more stoked for this team, our
best test series win and one I won't ever forget.
My face is numb from smiling. It'll take years to recover,
but it is so worth it. Absolutely rich. You and
I have spoken often about cricket over the years here
on z B and on one of our predecessor stations.
I thought a lot about you yesterday mate, when the

(42:35):
black Caps got the job done. That is us for tonight.
Thanks to Anne McDonald for pulling the show together. Thank
you for listening and taking part. Marcus Lush will take
you through the rest of Melbourne Cup Eve Darcy Watergrave
on Sports Talk tomorrow night, through the rest of the week,
and we're back on Saturday at this light earlier time
of eleven fifteen, straight after the All Blacks talk to

(42:57):
you then, have a great week five an
