Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talk z'b.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Very popular golf tournament on the way. It's called it
Chasing the Fox, and here's the fox that everybody is chasing. Ryan.
How are you on?

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Good? Thanks Darcy?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
So this is up and running. Now how long we
got to go before it starts? Because I believe that
it's going gang buses as far as people are concerned.
And the ticket sales are through the.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Roof mainteenth November, so hopefully that's not unlucky weather wise.
And yeah, it's been going great this year. You know,
we're in our third year so far, and you know,
got bigger and better every year, and this year has
sort of got some legs, you know, with our list
of celebrities and YouTube golfers coming down to play as

(00:58):
pretty impressive.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
And we're going.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
To be live on TV and Z as well, which
is pretty cool for a Friday night.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Why do they come for this so you can say
it's all about me. They want to chase me. But
obviously there's something else in the air if you're running
this successful in the ticket sales are still going out.
What's the attraction for the crowd and obviously for the
celebrities and the players that you get.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
In, well, I actually think it's got less to do
with me and all to do with the other guys playing.
You know, I think people are coming to watch because
we've got the Warriors, the rugby guys, we've got Olympians,
we've got a politicians team. You know, we've got legends
of sport and media and politics in New Zealand that

(01:42):
are playing. And you know, they love golf and it
gives people a chance to go out and interact with them,
to see them up close. And you know, the last
couple of years it's been pretty good out on the
golf course. With that, people have been able to get
close and talk a bit of stick and have a
bit of fun out there. And you know, I think

(02:03):
just through weird of mouth, that's got bigger and yeah,
I think everyone that's played and it's had fun, and
I think, you know, again, word of mouth for this
year in terms of people coming down to play have
been like, yeah, I'd love to play.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
It sounds it sounds like a lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
It's it's six holes, it's not too stressful for the amateurs.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
It's it's a.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
Scramble for Ambrose format as we call it here. Just
everyone hit the shot, take take the best one, and
you know it's pretty quick. It's you know, six holes.
You know, we're not trying to reinvent golf or anything
like that. It's just a different way to to view
us and maybe get some people into the game that
haven't really been involved in it before, haven't seen much

(02:45):
of it, and I think having people from different walks
of life and having it on on free to air
TV will we'll hopefully encourage that.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
So the way you've said it up with the Ambros,
they don't actually have to be to play. Have you
got a limitation on how they can hit a ball?
They have to see what they do before you say yeah,
right mate, you can come on down.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
No, no, And I'm not going to single anyone out
intentionally here, but I say David Seymour's played the last
couple of years, and I mean fair play to him
for putting himself out there. He doesn't play any golf whatsoever,
but you know he is. He's signed up the last
couple of years. He's loved every minute, a minute of it.
He was part of John Key's first ever hole in

(03:27):
one a couple of years ago, and yet like you know,
he signed up again this year, which is which is
pretty cool. So you know, there's no limit on the
shots he has to hits or whatever.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
He's just he's.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
Brave enough to put himself out there and you know,
try not to kill anyone and let people make make
a little bit of fun of some of the bad
shots he hats. And you know, I think that's kind
of the beauty of it too. It's not all about
people playing good golf. It's there's plenty of bad in there,
and I think that's probably what makes it. We're trying

(04:03):
to make it more accessible in that way too, that
you know, golf can be even if you're not very
good at it.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Great, That it's free to wear, that really really works,
and it's increasingly something that New Zealand's leaning into. They
don't want to pay for sport anymore, and things like
this they're really underline how how good it is. People
be keen as mustard, won't they.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Yeah, I hope. So, you know, I think golf's going
that way as well. You look at YouTube golf that
is just going all guns blazing at the moment, really
you know, we've we've got a few of the YouTube
golfers coming down and they've got great followings around the world.
And yeah, to have TVs in on board and to
have it live, especially in prime time as pretty incredible.

(04:44):
And you know, I'm I'm sure I'm not through all
the ins and outs of how all the TV coverage
is going to work, but you know, we're going to
have some pretty exciting stuff, access to all the guys playing,
and you know, I'm sure there'll be some crowd involvement
of some level as well. It's yeah, it's hopefully make it,

(05:04):
make it exciting, make it fun, you know, show everyone
having a bit of fun out on the golf course.
And you know, if we can encourage a few more
people to play the game, that's great. But yeah, just
to be able to have golf on free to wear
primetime in New zealand's pretty incredible.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Ryan Fox joined just Chasing the Fox. So that you
mentioned the ryse and rhymes of social golf. It's becoming
more and more popular. Can you pick your finger on
why people are climbing into this game again.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
It's going to sound weird.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
I actually think it started with COVID I don't know
why it's kept going. But you know, if you look
at you know, two or three years ago, I think
you know, golf was one or four years ago now. Basically,
you know, golf was the game that seemed to be
safe to play, and you know, when everyone was kind
of on lockdown and worried about interacting with people, when

(05:54):
you could you could still hang out with your mates
and be in this great open area and not worried
about you know, getting COVID or whatever it was.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
And that seemed to resonate worldwide.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
And you know, whether the governing bodies have managed to
jump on the back of that and do a good
job in marketing and I don't really know. All people
have just really enjoyed it and got their mates into it.
And it's hard to say, but golf and the last
couple of well last four years, has had a huge resurgence.
And yeah, some of it thanks to COVID, and I'd

(06:29):
like to know what the rest of it's from.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
But long mate continue.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
I think recreationally socially we're in a great space. I
think the professional games, still on the men's side at least,
is a little bit messed up, but we don't need
to go onto that, but yeah, it's it's going great
guns And you know, again for chasing the Fox, we've got,
you know, a bunch of people from very different walks

(06:53):
of life, who who for the most part, all enjoy
playing golf socially, and you know that's there, that's one
of their main hobbies.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
So yeah, it's it's cooled about to showcase that.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
And how about your yet, how's it gone? What are
you heading to? What's the off season up to? What
happens in twenty twenty five? How's your master plan?

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Ryan?

Speaker 4 (07:14):
Well, the first things first is a bit of rehab
on a hip injury I've got which I sort of
picked up in the middle of the year and played
through without really knowing what was going on. So I've
got a bit to sort out there in the off season.
I've got probably eight more weeks off before heading back
to the PGA Tour in twenty twenty five, so got

(07:35):
plenty of time to get that sorted. Obviously, got a
little bit of golf in December.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
To play as well.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
But yeah, it's I if I could grade my year,
it would be probably.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
A C C plus.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
You know, it's a pass mark I managed to keep
my card on the PGA Tour, which was Numero uno goal.
But yeah, I certainly would have liked to play a
little bit better than I did. And you know, hopefully,
you know, being able to sort this little injury ouse
and be able to play a little bit better, understand
how the PGA tool works, a bit better, know the

(08:09):
golf course is better. Hopefully that translates into a big
twenty twenty five.
