Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncie Wildegrave
from News talks Be. We're joining it now by Umanga.
He's the head coach of Mwana Pasifica. There squad came
out today for Super Rugby twenty twenty five. Tanna, welcome
on board. I trust you.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, oh yes, no, very well, thank you very much.
And now you know, it's exciting times. Now all the
things have been named and now we're just kind of,
as I said, excited about waiting to get into preseason.
I don't think the players are excited about preseason as
much as coaches, you know, but you know, it's just
part of the part of the job these days that
(00:45):
they've got to come in and get ready to sweated out.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
This is like being a parent and taking out what
your parents did on you and you as a kid
on your kid after your preseason. You're now canning it
back to the players now that you coach right.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
One hundred percent, As you said, it's so much better
watching than actually being involved in doing it. And like
you say, it does bring back, you know, some some
bad memories of what we went through, but now we're
all experts and telling them how far they can run
and when when you put the shoe on the other foot,
it's definitely different, definitely different.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
It starts pre season. What in a couple of weeks
time are you across the condition and the state of
all your players currently you've been having a good look
at them, pestering them, hiding outside their homes.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
A little bit of that. There's a little bit pestering around,
reminding them, you know, around making sure that they come
in good condition. Don't wait to come into pre season
to get fit. You want to come in to get better.
And so you know in the break, you know they've
all got programs. We've got a couple of we've got
a few players that are that have come coming together
(01:56):
and training together at the moment. So we've got our
hands and it's there's rugby balls in site. So they're
a little bit sad, but it's good. They'll be ready
by the start of the season. So that's what this
is all about.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
As far as Turno is concerned. I mean, you've lost
a lot of players, you've got a lot of new
people on board. How does that operate from a coaching
point of view? With that high turnover? How do you
approach that time.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Well, I think first and foremost, you know, it's probably
just accepting that's the way, you know, in terms of
how we contract and the way forward for us. It's
probably that's why it's going to work, and just making
sure around you know, when we are recruiting, what is
that against? What are we trying to achieve? And I
(02:48):
think you know, as we've talked about before, it's four
years now, you know, this is our fourth season and
we've we've grown with those pioneers that started one of
PACIFICA off, know, through the coaching staff and the management
and in those more formative years, then the player squad.
(03:08):
We've just kind of moved forward and we've tried to
improve all those things that those guys have started off.
And I think the change is all part of that.
And you know, we had a lot of planers that experience,
players a lot of experience, and then we've been you
know that those set us up. You know, they got
(03:29):
the ball rolling for us and they started us off,
and then we've got a new group coming through that's
hopefully carrying on and and still a spattering of those
original players that are still there and stuff. So it's
a you know, it's it is a bit of a
difficult job trying to manage and understand that. You know,
(03:51):
it's like you're restarting quite a bit every season with
the group. But you know that's exciting as well, you
know for us as coaches because we get to teach
another group know what it's like to become a professional athlete. Also,
you know, you're developing younger players and hopefully growing the
(04:13):
base for specific nations as well, and also helping these
young players get a real taste of what it really
is like to become a professional rugby player. And you
know a lot of that professional behaviors and habits that
you need off the field to have a long career
in this job.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Consistency is a hard one for Mona Pasifika. There were
some reasons there you outline and explained why it is.
What else do you think you struggle with? What is
your second year in the job now? What you'd like
to pack up? I don't know what it comes down to.
Is a success on the field that you need? Is
that a standout individual that puts bums on seats like
(04:58):
Ardie sar there for example. Is it competition against the
Blues is it where you're actually playing the games? There
how many variables?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah, that's right, that's right. Well, I think for us,
the big thing for us is really about that professionalism,
you know, people to understand the players, especially our players,
to understand you know, like as I talked about, the
consistency of performance come from the consistency of your preparation
(05:29):
and the consistency of your habits. You know, it doesn't
just happen on the field, and you can't just wait
till the weekend. I think it's going to happen. You know,
it's all about preparation and that's probably the biggest leaning
cure for a lot of our players. You know, some
of them are we've got a reel even though we're
all Pacific is a diverse starting point for a lot
(05:52):
of our plans, you know, from the Islands. Some of
them come from Club Rugby, you know, not necessarily in academies,
and obviously some from academies that have come through the
NPC so and you know, some from Australia. Some have
been scored in another places. So it's just really coming
together and for me, I believe it's really teaching them,
(06:15):
you know what it takes to be a professional off
the field more so than on the field. I think
the on field and a believer that you know that
will take care of itself because you know, that's these players,
that's what's you know, picked down interest in them is
what we see on the field. But we do a
lot of work, as do most coaches these days, about
you know, what are their habits off the field? Are
(06:37):
they toachable? Do we think they've got enough in them
that can help them grow? And because it's in the
best interest of the players, you know, to learn how
to do that because it'll give them, as I've stayed before, around,
they'll give them a long givity in the game. How
to look after their body, How do they keep growing
(06:59):
with the game? How do they really understand the game?
And that again comes back to having their consistency of
different behavior to give them consistent performances which will help
us give me what we want, but get what we
want on the field.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Head coach of Mona Pacificaumang joining the program. What about
the sense of identity? You said you've got a mix
of different cultures, different island cultures coming together, Australian's coming
over as well. Do you have a clear sense of
what the team is, who they represent. Do you have
an identity that needs to be put down after a
(07:33):
few years in the saddle?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Now?
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Do they know who they are as a team?
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yeah? I think that's something that for us. You know,
we know who we are. You know, we we're proud
Pacific Islanders, you know, predominantly you know, And when I
think that's the key thing is understanding that within our organization.
You know, we are a standout in terms of regular
union and our sport will probably you know, in most sports,
(08:01):
and that where owner operated run civic organization from the
front office to the back office. And that's what we're
really proud of. And so in terms of our identity,
we know who we represent and our culture, you know,
(08:21):
that's a un that's the thing that binds us. And
even though we do come from we represent a lot
of different ethnicities within the islands, our Pacific culture is
really the thing that binds us, you know, and our
understanding of you know, where we're from a huge aspect
for our families those have been before us. And then
(08:44):
also you know what we want to do and while
we're together and who we who we play this game
for and also the opportunity that's been given for us
to promote our culture, to promote our people, and then
making sure that we make you know, even though we've
this thought has been open for us, you know, we've
(09:06):
got to make sure that we leave it open for
those that are coming through. I think you see everywhere
around in terms of these contact sport's, especially the involvement
of Pacific Islanders on the field as such, and you know,
we want to grow that much to start on the field.
We want that uh and coaching realms, you know, and
(09:29):
the business realms and that governance realms as well. You
know that we have we play a big part of
these games, and you know we want to be able
to not just have to play them. You know, we
want to have some ownership around making decisions around when
the game goes as well.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
So how does that that? Densen? You obviously soul them
what you're doing where you're coming from, and you've been
together now as a team for a few years. I
suppose the big step here is playing success in the field.
You need victory, you need to win, you need to
be right up the top there is that the only
way to transfer what you've got to bums on seats,
because that's a big battle that no one pussy Faker
(10:08):
have got. You've you're up against the Blues for a start,
who are established. You keep changing your venues, which is
not ideal, But how do you transfer what you've got
to the fan base so they start following you?
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Yeah, I think you've just in the you know, the
shop front Windows is our team on the field, and
when that has success, you know, as we've seen most
other teams, when they have success, people start to get
interested and they want to get them behind it and
support it. And you know, just being Pacific doesn't necessarily
mean we'll have all the Pacific Olanders following us, because
(10:42):
you know, we relate to the party here super Raggby.
You know, we've got to start somewhere, and it's great
that we've started. But now, as you're it's really the
proof is in terms of our results, and it's it's
just the nature of the game for us. But you know,
we're we're confident in what we're doing. You know, we're
(11:03):
confident in the squad that we've selected for for this season.
As you said, we've got some experienced players. We've also
got you know, some plans that have been here for
a long time and who were really invested and have
been successful and making One Pacific success again that success
on the field. And then there's some We've got some
young players that have really taken the opportunity to join
(11:28):
us and you know, they believe in where we're going
and we feel that it can live their career as
to where they wanted to get to. But you know,
it all starts in pre season. Really. You know, we've
got to we've got to make sure that we're competitive
on the field. And we showed glimpses of that and
moments last year last season, but we've got to have
(11:50):
more access simple as that. You know, we've got to
stay competitive, competitive for longer moments, uh, and just keep
keep going at it. And you know, I think, you know,
we have a lots of there and his brothers needs
two experience play highly experienced, and you know then obviously
what they bring on the field is what you want
(12:12):
to notice the seas that's what they've been offt the
field that I think can really help build our players
around again. Yeah, those professional behaviors and habits that we
need to really keep pushing forward and hopefully push us
toward getting some of those results on the weekends.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Well, having about the cardisav A playing, He's going to
drive attitude, professional and culture within the side along with
his brother. So that is a massive get for the franchise.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Without a doubt.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
And then you add Alamilo coming back over from rugby
leg Solomon and that's another good get. So you are
attracting some quality players and that will lift the standards
and you'd expect it will also lift the engagement from
the public as well. They want to go and see
star players like that. Toney, you can't really avoid that,
can you.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
No, No, Sometimes it's a simple equation. And you know,
I see you've been to a couple of times around
just getting people to come and support us and get
those bums on sets. And I think having a designated
home ground this year is going to be a big,
big help for that. Being based at North Harbor Stadium
(13:29):
is as sums for us. You know, it's difficult when
we had to travel around a bit last year. You know,
it's it's hard to get a real following, and it's
also it really doesn't give you any advantage, you know,
because we don't get to sleep in our own beds.
We have to travel just like like our opposition, and
(13:50):
so it's it is like you're playing away all the time.
So you know, having a home, home ground, and then
for us to go back to the Islands during the
season is great for us to reconnect you know, with
the with the roots or a lot of our players
and give back in that way, so you know, the
(14:11):
quality of still the players we're brought in it will
really left us. Yet again, we still have to do
the work. I think that's the message that we that
our players have to do the work on and off
the field to really lift our level be competitive. And
the new season that's coming up, You've.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Got a home, which is fantastic because you've got that consistency.
Get is that ideal being way out there on the
north shore. Is that that close to your supporter base?
Is that you've got it? Which is great? Could there
be better? What do you do to actually turn that
into your home where it is?
Speaker 2 (14:50):
You know, obviously our supporter bases is definitely out South Auckland.
Yet trying to trying to play out there and find
a place where we can actually have a high performance
facility that there was just ours. We couldn't find one
(15:11):
in that area. So have being based in North Harbor
really helped us in there. And you know when we
talk about being high performance, being professional and you know,
and but you're turning up day by day and for
the plant and the stuff and team. You know, some
of the facilities that the previous teams had to do.
(15:33):
It's hard to really look your plants in the in
the in the eye. And so we're high performance, but
there's you know this sitting in warnings because they can't
fit under fit in the change room for the change
room is too small. Uh. And you know that you
have to travel around uh South Aukland just to go
(15:56):
from one one stilly to be able to just say
you can get a way session and into a field
and you know it just it just doesn't work well.
And so before we were fortunate to day Gad Harbor
Stadium have everything in one place. And I know it's
a big act for our communities and in the South
(16:17):
to come out to North Harbor Stadium. But hopefully we
can develop a following also we can they come up
with some ideas and strategies to try and keep them
out there. And we play sudden a style of game
that they're proud of to support and make effort to
get out there. But you know, we've got a bit
of work to try and get them out there. And
(16:38):
that's you know, that's again on us putting those results,
on making them feel like this is a team for them.
And I think the other side of that is we're
in a new we're in the on the North Shore,
and so it's also connecting the community because that's the
one that is closest to us and those are the
(16:59):
ones that you know, we were based there in terms
of our training the last season and know we're really
supportive around us being there. So you know, there's I
think we're just going to make sure that we look
after all the communities that we're we're connected with. You know,
we've got a bit of work to be done to
(17:20):
try and bring them to us. You know, we can't
expect this by signing this player and that player that
they're just going to turn up. And I think they
want to support a team that has success or or
they see that you know, they are representing who they
say they're representing to the best of their abilities, and
I think that's you know, that's the work that we
have to put.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
In a lot of mahe no doubts. Starts with you
thracing them with a stick at the start of pre season.
I'm glad I'm not involved in that consistency, that's what
you're after. Difficult with the players, but let's hope you
can get consistent victories, consistent performances and drag that crowd
to North Harbor Stadium. Keenly anticipating what you got for
(17:58):
us this year among a real pleasure.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Thanks very much for your time. Wise appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
