Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildegrave
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be it's off to Vegas we go now, and
we're joined by Mick Akers. Here's a writer for the
Las Vegas Review Journal, just newspaper in Nevada. Mick, Welcome
to the show.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
How is it right now in Vegas with the Formula one?
Has it got the traction that everybody thought it would
get now that it's actually settled there?
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Yeah, you know, you picked up obviously, they started promoting
their race a little bit later in the year and
than they did last year, so they said that was
my plan. Once they did that, ticket sales picked up.
The majority of the spaces have sold out. There's a
few high end spaces and a couple of GA ones
that are still open. So you know, you're seeing the
ticket sales pickup walking pitt Row right now, and you
know everyone's just kind of taking in all the teams taking,
(00:55):
you know, practicing their pitstops and all that lot of excitement.
So you know, it's just the first night and it's
already kicking off right now.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Considering where you are. The majority of the fan base,
they're going to turn up. Who rocking for? Who do
they want to win? What shirts are they wearing? Mick.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
You know, I'm seeing a mix of everything. And we've
seen some Ferrari, We've seen some Mercedes. Uh, you know,
a little bit of everything. I would say a lot
of people are you know, crowding around ver Stopping's garage
right now. Obviously well, one of the favorites out here
in the US. Obviously he's had the most successive recent siety.
I guess a lot of people who might be new
to the sport in the US are taken to that.
(01:31):
But you know, some of the people who have came
out here from around the world, you know, they have
their alliances and such. So I'm seeing a pretty good
mix of pretty much everything right now.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Critical Mass, How is it going as far as the
acceptance of Formula one? It's been around for a long time,
but Liberty media are really going for it. There are
three races in the stits now. They really want to
pick up involvement. Is that working? Are you seeing a
lift and interest from everybody concerned?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Yeah, especially out here in Vegas. Last year leading up
to the race, there was you know, several months of
rehaving what would be the street circuit a lot of
it and Los Acas Boulevard caused a lot of traffic headache,
so people were kind of ticked off about that all year.
This year is a lot more smoother because they didn't
have to do any of that repaving. They just had
to start doing the tracks set up with, you know,
putting some lighting, some track barriers and such, so it
(02:21):
was a lot less disruptive. So and they also slashed
some of the ticket prices out here, so a lot
of people are now looking at it as more of
something they might be able to attend and not something
that's going to be out of their pocket range. So
I'd say, you know, with the less disruption, people maybe
look past that this year and they're actually looking at
the race and it's actually peaking their interest.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Right now, you mentioned next for stopping. There's a guy
over here in New Zealand who's going to be running
and he's had a few Grand Prix already for the
Rebel ricing team. His name is Liam Lawson. Does that
ring a bell for anybody? The people know who he
is over there, you know.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Not necessarily anyone out here in Vegas. Like I said,
they know the big names. I'm sure there's a few
diehards and might know, but I'd say for the most part,
the US fan the probably isn't as educated has you know,
the international audience at this point. But as you know,
as you mentioned, one's trying to you know, get the
interest out her growing and I think we're in the
baby steps of that right now.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
So he's part of Racing Bull not Red Bull Racing
excuse me, the Racing Bulls team, and he's trying to
get rid of Sergio Perez Checko. He wants to take
that seat. And I expect there's quite a large Mexican
population that will be turning up for this race with
its vicinity two Mexico and the population based there in California.
(03:35):
So I think some of those fans would know who
he is and wouldn't be wishing him the best mech.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
That would be correct. Yes, there is a lot of
Czecho fans out here. I saw it last year. We
saw it at the fan fest when they announced the
race a couple of years ago. You know, he had
the biggest turnout, would say, of people at that So
there is a large fan base out here. So you
are correct, they probably wouldn't be a big fan of
him o absolutely trying to nudg him out of his spot.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
We joined by Mick a Kids in Las Vegas as
we take a look at the upcoming grom Prix the
conditions lot. You mentioned that I have to relay the track.
What else do we need to know? I'm talking hate
the weather. What teams have been saying about what they've experienced,
see and time round.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, so today and tomorrow s itcially pretty nice that
it'll be around you know, in the low fifties I
forty degree temperatures. No, when Saturday might be a little
bit more chili when could be an eighteen miles per
hour with gust up at thirty five miles per hour,
so you know, might be similar to last year's weather
(04:37):
where it's pretty chiley and when you at the same time,
so you know, it wasn't the greatest thing to be
outside of past midnight with those temperatures. But as far
as right now, it's actually pretty nice. A lot of
people aren't even wearing coats at this moment at this point,
so hoping for the best, but you know, preparing for
the worst.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Nick Indyka is the big open wheel racing category racing
class in America. We know, because we've got a champion
in Scott Dixon that's been dominating for years. Do you
think there's a chance thatif one will gain equal footing
with NB can where they staying with the motorsport fans.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
You know, I think there is a chance. Obviously with
all these marquee events and you have Vegas thrown in
the mix of Miami, you have Austin, so you know,
it's kind of you got one on one coast, you
got one in the middle, and you got one on
the other side of the US. So I think they're've
been pretty smart in that way of kind of spreading
the events out and trying to get people maybe would
go to only the East coast go to that one.
People might just go to the one in the Midwest.
(05:32):
We go to Texas and then one here on the
West coast that come here to Vegas and from around
the world. So I think, you know, if they keep
working at it, and you know, they keep having these
big events, all eyes on them, they go on ESPN
and do all that thing. Uh, you know, I think
it'll take some time, but I think they're you know,
there's a real chance that you can and surpass a
eddycar racing.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Make it will navigate close to NASCAR, though, will it?
Speaker 3 (05:54):
No, I wouldn't see that. That's you know, that's the
American racing they'd like to call it out here, So
it might be a bit of a threat to catch
up with that one.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
As Bruce Buffer going to kind of stumble as why
will can through the driver introduction to gain and all that?
What have you call it? As far as celebrity buying,
because people love a good celebrity, I'm sure a lot
of the American rock stars, film stars and the like
will want to be around. So tell us about Bruce
is he coming back and who are the other rock stars?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
You know, they've been pretty quiet about who's going to
be the celebrities and who is gonna do the introductions,
But you know, Bruce Buffer is one of the main
guys that does it, Oliver, he does it all the
Raiders games here at Elitia Stadium, all kinds of special
events and obviously UFC, So you know, I would bet
he would be here returning on that. And you know,
(06:43):
just based on last ye what I saw, you know,
I saw rock stars from guns n' roses, Axel Rose.
I saw Shaquille o' neil, the NBA star. You know,
all kinds of a list, movie actors, all kinds of
people were out here at this race. So it's going
to be a return of you know, of the stars
here at the track.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Donald Trump turned up in the garage of McLaren. I
wonder if he will repeat that one as well. Am Mick.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Hey, you never know. I haven't heard any saying, but
it wouldn't surprise me with the way he gets around.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
And on that. We'll get on with very busy time
for all concerned me. Thank you very much. Mike Acres
from the Las Vegas Review Journal out of Vegas in Nevada.
Enjoy yourself, mate, thanks for yours, Thanks for having me.
