Speaker 8 (01:50):
Voltaran and now he's absolutely served it up to Miana PACIFICA.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, that was the game that ended the weekend. Three
hundred and twenty seven points across the five games, an
average of sixty five points per game, but an average
winning margin of just five points. High scoring games, close contests.
Surely that is the perfect combination. Super Rugby CEO Jack
(02:16):
Mesley is standing by the chat to us shortly your
thoughts on opening weekend as well? Did it live up
to the hype? It did for me, I have to
say you might agree or disagree. Well, so can you
get your thoughts on something else I've read this morning
regarding Super Rugby and a particular sporting crowds in Auckland.
Once Super Rugby really gets going, the Warriors are in
(02:40):
season and Auckland FC continue their charge towards what could
potentially be an A League championship. So your thoughts on
that would be welcome as well. More on that in
a sec Monday night also means we rate the weekend
Party's Power rankings, putting the spotlight on the best, the worst,
and the in between. Bits from the Sporting Weekend. Please

and eighty ten eighty Sports Talk all on your home

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Edbess mentioned Round one of Super Rugby Pacific is in
the books and what around it was?
Speaker 9 (03:27):
Fatima.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Now here's some space Mackenzie's flight thro how appropriate Damien
Mackenzie over twenty three fourteen check to come.
Speaker 7 (03:39):
That might be enough for the Chiefs to win it well,
a second half statements from the Chiefs fourteen six down
at halftime, twenty five fourteen winners.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, the Chiefs betting the Blues and a repeat of
last season's final just one of the talking points of
the weekend. In fact, all five games had storylines galore,
lots to get excited about. Let's bring in competition CEO
Jack Mesley Jack in general terms. First of all, how
did you assess the fe just weekend off Super Rugby
Pacific for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 9 (04:10):
Well, I mean, firstly, you just got us on the park.
I mean one of the amazing five games. We had
incredible spectacles, a lot decided by a point in and
a lot of them going all the way into into
and pass the eighty eight minute. So yeah, we've sort
of spent the day to day reviewing all of those
(04:31):
sorts of things, looking at the product itself, looking at
the match officials reviews, looking at our marketing and attendance
and audience reviews and all of those things.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
And yeah, we were very lucky.
Speaker 9 (04:43):
We had a great start and a highlights reel that
you know you'd be lucky to get at the end
of a season after the first round.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Indeed, Well, I want to unpack a few of the
things you've said there. But high scoring games with close margins,
I know you can't manufacture these things, but is that
kind of the ideal combo for you across a round
of Super Rugby.
Speaker 9 (05:03):
Absolutely, I mean, we know Super Rugby is always always
been high point scoring, you know, lots of tries, and
we sort of innovated the first bonus point mechanisms back
in the day. But to balance that with an average
of a five point march, I think we had on
average nine tries a game and with a five point margin.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
You know, that's the idea or kind of balance we find.
Speaker 9 (05:27):
We have free flowing, attacking rugby, but close games with
lots of lead swings and at the end of the day,
nice and close games.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
All three Australian sides who played one as well, And
I know how much a competitive Super Rugby Pacific competition
is important to you. Does it give you optimism for
the strength of those sides and the reads who, of
course we'll see in a round two the season given
the effect we've gone from five to four teams in Australia.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean we want to see.
Speaker 9 (05:58):
Ladder position change from year on year and regardless of
where those teams come from, the brumbis winning on the
road in FG is a tough road trip for anyone,
so that's a great effort. But yeah, I think one
of the things we look at is ladder position change
year on here, which we know creates interest.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
So you know, we really want to continue to see that.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
You talked about about your Monday review and highlighted a
few different categories inside that review. What were the main takeaways,
you know, from from giving the weekend but a breathing
room and discussing it all today, We're.
Speaker 9 (06:38):
Really pleased with how our laws and focus areas were
dealt with by the match officials.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
We think they did a great job on the weekend.
Speaker 9 (06:49):
Still some things to a few small things to.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Nail, but in terms of the way that they moved
the game forward, you would have seen, you know, we're
only stopping for major injuries. For example. The referees were.
Speaker 9 (07:02):
Very consistent and focused on getting the ninth to clear
the ball. So all of those things were really good
and I think helped set up the spectacle. There was
no doubt that the games were fast, fatigue with the factor,
and I think that helped us, you know, helped the
(07:23):
games set up to go deep into into the eightieth
minute and beyond.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
As far as the officials role in all of this,
how how deep is your involvement with them, Jack, in
terms of making sure that they that they play their
part in the product that you want to see.
Speaker 9 (07:43):
Well, I mean we you know, collectively they're a committee
that looks at what our focus is for the season.
That then goes into the match official teams and the
managers of those teams then go and work work through
that on a on.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
A weekly basis.
Speaker 9 (07:59):
The match if it was manager will do a full
review across every game and then we'll just check in
with them to see if they are there are any
sort of glaring issues that we need to we need
to talk about or address and you know, also go
public with if need be.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Thankfully, you know, we don't think there are any major
decisions that were that needed clarification, and in terms of
just flow of game, implementation of laws and implementation of interpretation,
we're really pleased with that. So yeah, so there was
no no major sort of outcomes or changes for this
(08:35):
next round.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
And we receive the media Judicial update this morning that
simply said there are no disciplinary matters resulting from Round
one fixtures of Super Rugby specific so nothing to see here.
I know that you know that won't be the case
right throughout the season. Seven yellow cards, none upgraded, but
you'd be pretty happy with that as a.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Metric to Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 9 (08:56):
I mean, I think you know, we talked a lot
about increasing the transparency and communication around the competition.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
But when we don't, we don't have anything to report.
That's also good news in many instances.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
How happy were you with viewer numbers if you've seen
them and attendance numbers for the weekend.
Speaker 9 (09:13):
Yeah, I haven't got the full debrief on audience, but
in terms of attendance, we're really really pleased. I think
we almost twenty percent up on Round one last year
with one less fixture, which is a great result. So
some really strong signs there, and just really pleased that
all of those that went to stadium and watched on
(09:34):
broadcast got such a great spectacle to watch across all
five games.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
And Fantasy Super Rugby had its launch a week or
so ago, well in the lead into Round one. Have
you received any sort of feedback anecdotal or or quantifiable
around Super Rugby and the fantasy element this weekend?
Speaker 9 (09:56):
Yeah, Well we had over fifty six thousand fans playing
Fantasy over the weekend, which were really really pleased with
four year one and great to see just the discussion
that that is fueled, you know all the way through
just from discussions I'm having with my mates to know
(10:16):
how that's fueling discussion on social media and through into
the broadcast itself. So really pleased with that. And you know,
so you know, what we really wanted to do was
make sure that it not only heroed our big stars,
but also featured the emerging stars, so you know, to
have that narrative play out where the big stars scored
(10:37):
big points. But then you also everyone that played Fantasy
now knows Kyle Preston, for example, you know who only
zero point one percent of those Fantasy teams had him
in there, but there'll be a lot of people looking
looking at that going forward.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
So that's played out really well. Yeah, I mean we're.
Speaker 9 (10:57):
Certainly listening and looking for feedback to see how we
can improve things in future iterations. That's certainly, you know,
one of our core focus is not just within Fantasy,
but in all facets of the game to make sure
we're listening and learning and seeing what we can do
to improve moving forward.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Did you say fifty three thousand players? Is that what
you said?
Speaker 3 (11:18):
I think it was over fifty six out.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Well, okay, well that makes me feel like about my
sixteen thousand, six hundred and ninetieth place, I'm almost I'm
in the top third. Jack This is an excellent start.
This is an excellent start for me.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Yeah, your expertise is not being questioned.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
I can assure you that it is. I can assure
you that it is all right. So round one of
the books. I know there was a big build up
to the start of the season. Now I guess you've
got to do it again and again and again. How
do you feel as you look forward now to this
week and how different will it be from last week
where it was all new?
Speaker 9 (11:50):
Well, I mean, I just look at the features we've
got this week, and we've got.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Some absolute ripperts.
Speaker 9 (11:56):
So you Chiefs hosting the Crusaders will be phenomenal. We've
got the Canes hosting the Drewer, which is going to
be great to see FG on the road, see if
they can back up that great performance they put on the.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Weekend Highlanders Blues as well. And then we've got Reds.
Speaker 9 (12:12):
Coming off the bye who were really strong last year
and had a great preseason. And then it finishes off
with Brumby's Force and a local Australian derby down in Canberra.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
So you know, I think this is the great thing
this season.
Speaker 9 (12:26):
We've got five fixtures, they're all going to be tight,
and you know there's no rest for the wicked. I mean,
I think we've only got a short season, but it's
sort of like a middle distance run, isn't it. Like
it's only sixteen rounds, but there is no break, so
it's a spring in many regards.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Well, you're sprinted well from the starting blox around one
of the bookses, I say, thanks Jack for joining us
and being successful. All the best for Walleyes. I hit
of no doubt we'll catch up again at some stage soon.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
Thanks Bone, I hope you get up in that top
top third.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Thanks for your time, mate, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Jack Measley, CEO of Super Raypy Pacific a fairly happy ceo.
You'd have to think after round one of the competition,
all right, you've heard from Jack. You took it. I'm
sure some or all of the Super Rugby action over
the weekend are your chance to react to anything you saw.
Anything you want to pick up on from what Jack
Measley said your own experiences at eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty, how did you enjoy the first weekend of
(13:28):
the Super Rugby season. If you want, you can ring
and skyte about your team or you can like I
will be furrow your brow over the performance of your team.
In fact, I won't furrow my brow over the Hurricanes.
It was just one game, wasn't it. You can come
back to me in four or five weeks if they
haven't had a win and we could chat then perhaps,
But no, I'd keen to hear from you about what
(13:50):
you saw and what you liked. I've already had a
couple of people on text telling me to call my jets.
Don't get too carried away, Piney, don't get too excited.
It's just the first season, well the first game of
the season. Well, I do have some thoughts on that,
but the phone lines just starting the light up, so
I think we should go straight to those. Kevin, thank
you for holding How I you?
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Thank you?
Speaker 10 (14:08):
They're being Jesson, How are you very good?
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Kevin? Thank you?
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Hey not too bad?
Speaker 10 (14:13):
How do I say this? I can I can sum
up week one of Super Rugby as whim and thank
you man. That's how that that's that's that's how awesome
it has been this week, And of course I've been
able to get it's a good way to especially it's
to see how see how finally see our mates across
the ditch and no longer walkovers. And especially they've got
(14:35):
the upcoming British Lians Tour later this year. It's come
come to put your hands up in case of you
want you want to spot in that that in that
historic call that generational tour.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
That's just Kevin. That is such a good point because look,
you're right. We we all want Super Rugby to be
ultra competitive. We want all eleven teams to have a
chance on their day to beat any of the other teams.
We want that jeopardy around a game. We don't want
to sit there and go we know how this is
going to turn. But you're so right. All those all
four of those Australian teams have players in them who
(15:11):
want nothing more than the opportunity to play against the
British and Irish Lions, which for most people comes along
once in their career. Best way they can do that
play well for their Super Rugby team, catch the eye
of Joe Schmidt and go from there. It's such a
good point you.
Speaker 10 (15:24):
Make, Thank you very much. And yeah, of course that
I've also be to have that the chance to watch
it from another broadcaster's perspective. Legally, which is it's been
really good.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Excellent, Kevin, that's great to hear. I've got some figures
actually from sky which are very encouraging. I'll give those
to you and just to see.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
I thought the fact that all three Australian sides that
played we know the Reds had to buy the fact
that all three Australian sides had wins was an interesting
little layer to this. The Warritars beating the Highlanders thirty
seven thirty six, the Brumby's going to Fiji to Suva
and beating the Fiji and Drewer thirty six thirty two,
(16:01):
and then out west late on Saturday night the Force
oring that late try to beat Mowana pacifica forty five
forty four. Now, I know what you're going to say.
I know some of you are going to say, okay,
but the three Australian sides only beat Moana pacificather Fiji
and Drewer and the Highlanders. But it's not they can
(16:23):
only play who's in front of them. I get what
you're saying. I get Look, I'm only hearing you in
my head. I get what you're saying. But that you
might you might want to wait until some of those
sides have played the likes of the Blues or the Chiefs,
for example, and we've got to wait a couple of
weeks for that to happen. But I thought for a
starting weekend, it was very good. Seven twenty three. G
(16:45):
I'm going to get you right after this. Eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty is our phone number speed line
if you want to jump aboard anything you picked up
on or would like to pick up on from opening
weekend of Super Rugby Pacific back in a moment on
sports Talk, No need for the DMO.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
We've got the breakdown on sports Talk. Call oh eight
hundred news Talk, said B.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Seven six on news Talks. Here be talking the opening
weekend of Super Rugby. It on the lines at the moment,
Glenda says on text chats, and I really enjoyed the
way the refs did their job hurrying the players along,
not letting them waste time. It was fantastic. Glinda totally agree,
totally agree, Graham. Your teams off to a winning start.
You're going to be back to your back to the
top of the mountain.
Speaker 11 (17:27):
I like getting too carried away, but I'm pretty happy.
Jason and hurricane. You Urraca seem are a good side.
They started well and anyway, I rang here last year
those first five weeks and we didn't win, and it
was getting pretty it was getting pretty drad. But yeah,
I mean I had really good positive feelings about the
Crusadoes before this season, and I like to thank you
(17:51):
for Kyle Preston.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Yeah, I was only sorry, Graham. I was I was overseas.
I was over and Aussie actually, and I was I
was having an early dinner on Friday, so I wasn't
watching the game, but I kept on getting these buzzers
on my mobile and people people were saying exactly what
you'll say, how did you let Carl Preston go?
Speaker 11 (18:12):
Well, it's one of those nobody can keep everybody, and
you know people with let players come from go from
here that you know, someone's been stars and other teams
and it's just a reality. But you know, you know,
he came on and played so well early. I mean,
he's a highly experienced player with Wellington. He was part
of the winning MPC team last year. And you know
(18:33):
that's a great, a good you know, you know, buy
for the Crusaders. But yeah, it was a good performance.
I thought all the games were good, but it was
a great atmosphere in christ Church.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
I was going to ask you that because I know
you would have gone to the game. What was it?
I saw some ideas about fourteen fourteen thousand or so
in that seventeen thousand seat stadium of yours.
Speaker 11 (18:53):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, Well I thought it was a
good crowd, and to start with them, obviously with a
sort of breast of cricket and the fact that rugby
season yet, I think people have been sort of really
looking forward to getting into it. I think good on
you for you're enthusiasm. A lot of people like talking
rugby down and saying it's too early, and then they go, well,
(19:15):
don't get carried away. But Jesus, you know which you're
going to live for the moment.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
You know, Oh Graham, I look and no, not me.
I'm not going to Yeah, I am going to live
at the moment. I'm not going to play it down.
I've been looking forward to the sea. Yeah, no, no,
I just yeah, I know, I know. Look, I you know,
like you, Graham, I just bat that stuff away, you know,
you let it sort of roll over you and you
just feel the way you feel going to go back
to Carl Preston for you and just get your view
(19:41):
on this. I thought that was a gutsy move for
him to go to the Crusaders when they had Noah Hotham,
who we know is probably going to be the number
one and at all Black four many years to come,
Mitchell Drummond, who always always does a job for you,
Cayle Preston really would be going down there as number
three three half back. I thought it was quite a
gutsy move. It's worked out for him hoth them, you know,
(20:01):
not to not to wish ill on anybody is going
to be out for a month now, so he's going
to get a bit of a crack in there. I
thought initially a gutsy move even to go to christ You.
Speaker 11 (20:09):
Yeah, I think there's been a few. Yeah, well it was.
And I mean I saw him play out Rangiora and
he played very well against Canterbury and yeah yeah, but
like James O'Connor, the Connors was they put a people
A lot of people made a lot of controversy around that,
but I mean, I mean, I know he's loving it
here and you know, he made a real contribution off
(20:30):
the bench, and you know he's brought something to that,
Tam and you know it's going to help Ta Kamara,
I mean and Rivers Ryana. He's out for a little
bit longer. But yeah, I mean I think they're going
to make but step forward having him there, you know, Yeah,
I think he just brings a lot and he looks
he looks quick too. He might be thirty five, but
(20:52):
you know he looks twenty five.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah. Yeah, I heard him say. I heard him say too,
Graham that he said that Taha Kamada is one of
the most gifted rugby place he's ever played with. And
James has been around for ages.
Speaker 11 (21:05):
That's right. So I mean obviously, you know with the
first I mean the standard first five we've had coming
out of here. Yes, a world class and you know
were were spoiled for so many years. So but I
bet he's played with some very good players. But yeah,
and that was he wasn't just saying that. You know,
that's a highly promising statement from James conna Is concerned.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Yeah, a Greg Graham, how good to chat mate. And
I'm glad your your season has started well. I got
the Chiefs on Friday, another good one. That's up on Hamilton,
of course, I know you have eyes or ears on it.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Graham.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Good to chat to you. Just on James O'Connor. I'm
not sure if you saw this he pulled into I
think it was the Macus drive through. I'm not sure
whether that's the best postmatch meal, but I guess when
you win, you know what you like. Anyway, he was
in the Macas drive through and he saw the car
in front of him where it was full of Crusaders fans.
They must have had their flags out the window or something,
so hops out of his car, walks down, says good
(22:02):
to them, then pays for their food. What a champion.
That's the way, and der yourself to your new fan base.
Twenty nine to eight.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Hello Chris, get out of mate.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
What's on your mind?
Speaker 3 (22:15):
Chris?
Speaker 6 (22:16):
Oh at the Crusader I just put my patch back on.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Mate, Leave it there.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Leave it.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
They They should never come off ever.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
Absolutely, But I mean last year was a bit of
a a little bit of a problem problem.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
Sorry, Chris, that's a good way of describing it. It
was a bit of a yeah, Houston, we have a problem. Yeah,
Christ you just did have a problem last year. Anyway,
karl It it.
Speaker 6 (22:45):
Was a bump in the right, you know, like all
of the Apollos worked apart from one. So you know what,
what I like, what I thought like to see in
this game against your team. My apologies is that as
soon as James kind of came on, the ability for
(23:06):
him to link with Jordan's was it just changed the game.
And I'm looking forward to a good season for US Crusaders. Auckland.
We're coming to get you.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
That's the spirit, Chris.
Speaker 6 (23:23):
We're back and I'm very proud of the boys. There
was a bit of a depressions down in the Republic
of Canterbury last year after what happened, So I'm looking
forward to this.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Man, I am too, Yeah, I am too. Like I
don't think well, I was going to say, I don't
think anybody really delighted in the in the demise of
the Crusaders last year. That might not be entirely going
to say. Some people might have from.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
No, no, no, I'm going to tell you that from the
people of Bluff up to the people of Timaru, and
then from from about Blenham North right up to north Onto.
Yes they did. But we're rubbing our hands now and
saying where come they get you? I love it and
enjoy one year bears that we had in us on
We're coming back.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Good on you, Chris, lovely change has always mate. I
love it. And I look at that Crusader's side, thanks
for your call. I look at that Crusader side and
I think it actually is pretty stacked. You work your
way down the team. Let's look at the All Blacks
and that and that Crusaders team that played the other
night to mighty Williams Fletcher and Newell, Scott, Barrett, Ethan Blackada,
Noah Hotham who started came off quite early, Seva Reese,
(24:37):
David Harvilly, will Jordan, George Bauer on the bench as well.
And then you come down and find James O'Connor there
a fairly distinguished Wallaby's player. And it is a good side.
It's a good site. I'm really really interested to see
the development of Taha Kamada at first five for the Hurricanes,
(24:57):
for the say the Kanes, for the Crusaders. I'm actually
speaking of the Hurricanes, quite interested to watch the development
of Harry Godfrey in the teen jumper for the Hurricanes.
Got some comments to play from Corey Jane, assistant coach
of the Hurricane shortly. But back to the Crusaders. Look,
we'll probably find out a little bit more about them
(25:18):
on Friday night against the Chiefs, who were very good,
very very good. In fact, probably the standout team of
the weekend the Chiefs in beating the Blues at Eden
Park on Saturday night twenty five fourteen. Damien McKenzie. He
say what you like about Damien McKenzie, but he is
(25:40):
an absolutely superb super rugby player. Yes, he's had some challenges,
some challenges taking the step up to the All Blacks jersey,
but as a super rugby player, he is phenomenally good.
I said a week ago, I thought the Chiefs were favorites,
(26:00):
still do. Thought they were favorites last year lost in
the final. Thought they were favorites the year before that,
lost in the You just wonder whether he got to
lose two to win one. Who knows. I know Clayton
McMillan wasn't getting too carried away afterwards. But again you
look at that team and I absolutely loved Clayton McMillan's
(26:21):
innovation around his bench. It wasn't necessarily a bomb squad,
but when he left two port Valli Summer Penny Female
Cortez Ltima, Anton Lennett Brown and Immoni Nadawah on his bench.
I had an eyebrow raise. But then when he injected
(26:42):
those players into the game in the second half, you
could see exactly what he was thinking. So who knows.
I mean a Cortez Latima, I think everybody expected that
he would start in the nine jersey. Xavier Rowe got
the role. I think everybody thought that Damien McKenzie might
start at ten. Josh Jacob got that role. I wonder
whether you might see Jacob at ten and Mackenzie at fifteen.
(27:04):
Often Shawn Steven's away at the moment, so there's a
bit of tinkering to do back there. None of satiros
on the other wing I was checking on. I mean,
there's Chiefs teamers talk about the Crusaders being stacked the
Chiefs teamers as well, just from the Hurricanes. Actually, before
(27:24):
I get to this couple of texts, don't get carried away, Poney,
says Paul. Sixteen thousand at Alians with the su ALII hype,
there's an embarrassing turnout. The Warriors had twenty three thousand
away from home in a preseason game. Let's see how
Super Raby's looking after three rounds when the main course,
(27:46):
the NRL starts, says Paul. For me, Paul, a couple
of things. I don't think it has to be one
or the other. I don't think that. Yes, there are
people who will only be able to afford to go
to one. But I'm not sure that just because the
Warriors haven't started yet, and when they do we'll see
it decrease in Blues crowds follows. I don't think that
(28:08):
there follows. You talk about the Warriors having twenty three
thousand away from home in a preseason game. They were
just down the road in Hamilton, to be fair, weren't they, Paul.
So it's not a long drive from Auckland, particularly South Auckland,
where there's a huge fan base for this team, down
the road to Hamilton. But I take what you're saying
and I look forward to seeing what happens when the
(28:29):
NRL starts and Auckland the FC are still going. Steve
says Pinty. Don't get excited over the first round four
KIW teams playing each other. Now we'll get the boring
one sided games, just like last year. Steve to that
I would say that that was why I was so
pleased to see the Australian sides doing well, because I
want to see contests. I don't want one sided affairs,
(28:55):
because you're right, they were one sided, you know, more
often than not last season. I think I said on
the Sholve a number of times across the Super Rugby
weekend season, I would watch the Hurricanes regardless of whether
they were playing, because they were my team and any
other New Zealand derby. But I wouldn't necessarily make an
(29:16):
appointment to watch a New Zealand team playing an Australian
team or two Australian teams playing one another. But now
I might interested to see how the Reds go. There's
been a lot of chat around about the Reds and
how good they might be. They've got Mana Pacifica in
the first game of their season they had to buy
(29:38):
this weekend, that is on Friday night, following the Chiefs Crusaders.
You know what, I'll watch the Chiefs Crusaders. I might
just hang around to see how the Reds go against
Mowana Pacifica when we get to round three or get
the Chiefs at home to the Brumbies. I look forward
to seeing how the Brumbies travel across to New Zealand,
(30:02):
and then they'll stay and take on the Blues. I'm
looking forward to seeing when the Crusaders visit the Reds
in round four, how they go on a Sunday afternoon game. Look,
this might all fall to pieces in the next three
or four weeks, but all we can judge it on
is what we've seen so far. Andy says, beast opening
round of Super Rugby I can remember, although not as
(30:26):
hot as the thirty three degrees that Gore reached yesterday.
Thirty three degrees in Gore. The Highlanders, concludes Andy, have
an average age of twenty two. Jamie Joseph will get
them humming. I hope, so, I hope so. I think
it'll be drawing a long boat to say that the
(30:47):
Highlanders will be in championship contention. But very very pleased
to see that those young players are responding. And look,
they could have beaten the Warretals. Couldn't they just going
to go back and check on the on the scoring. Well,
they were ahead, weren't they thirty six points to thirty
till right at the end. The Warritars got that try
(31:08):
right at the end to win that game, so the
Holands could easily have gone to Sydney and got the result.
I think for a lot of people, the war Tars
are probably the best of the four Australian sites. You
can't deny that that getting rid of the rebels and
spreading that talent has been a good thing for the
Super Rugby competition. Here's Corey Jane, Hurricane's assistant coach, on
(31:32):
Harry Godfrey the new starting first five for his side.
Speaker 12 (31:36):
You know, he's put in so much work in trying
to drive this team and I thought Harry played well.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
But if you look back at.
Speaker 12 (31:45):
The beginning of pre season. I remember last year, they've
been in the team for a couple of years with
them and every time he got up to speaker, one
would laugh at him because he was kind of like
a jokester and like the little the little boy. But
now he's just turned into absolute general of our team.
And straight from the beginning of preseason how much he's
I guess stepped in and gone on want to be
(32:06):
the starting ten and the boss of this team. And
you've seen it from the beginning all the way to now.
It's been awesome to see and he led our guys
well and he'll get better too. But I just like
the growth on his off field and when he's speaking
to the boys and meetings. It's unbelievable. You have to
come into a meeting.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
I'd love to come into a meeting Corey on the
first round in a wider sense, What did Corey Jane
make of the first round in terms of the rugby
that was on show across the five matches.
Speaker 12 (32:38):
Yeah, I mean if I was a Hurricane fan, I
wouldn't be happy, But no, just awesome. I think you
know that the people need it. You know, you look
at even all the Ossie teams winning great for our competition,
there's some good try scored as well, and so hopefully,
you know, people get behind it and think, you know this,
the product that is out now is going to be good.
(33:01):
And like I said, the Aussie teams they'll scratched one.
So some of the tellents that have gone to other
teams and you know, the better they play, you know,
the better competition is going to be. So it's a
tough one.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Also from Corey Jane, does he think the rule changes
have helped to speed up the game and improve the
spectacle of Super Rugby.
Speaker 12 (33:21):
No, I don't even know have to wall changes are
changing anything. To be fair, teams just get better and
better at attacking. And you look at five years ago,
ten years ago what their game was and the skill sets,
like there's not many forwards that running around in rugby
today that don't have the skill sets for catch and
pass and you know, goose steps and all that kind
(33:43):
of stuff. Now it's where ten years ago, twelve years ago,
they just went in cleaned rucks, you know what I mean.
So if the skill sets were coming on the rugby
and most coaches or attacking coaches you know, are trying
to get the teams to use their flair and so
again for the coaches as a challenge, but you know
for people watching, it's awesome.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
And finally from Corey Jane, does he think this will
be one the closest Super Rugby competitions in recent years?
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 12 (34:10):
I think. You know, you look back at probably when
South Africa were in the competition and you know, you
just didn't know which teams were going to win and
be at the top, and you know, there's going to
be some challenging game against the Aussies because they are
better and I've shown it in the weekend and they'll
want to build on that and us New Zealand teams
WI want to get better too, so we want to
(34:32):
win a championship.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Those are the thoughts of Corey Jane, assistant coach of
the Hurricanes and former All Black. Of course, from Gavin
on text, with all due respect to Richie Mornger because
he's a great player. I thought it was really good
to see the first fives getting recognition and not having
to listen to people calling for Richie Mornga to immediately
come back. Look, I agree this is super rugby. It's
a chance to see different guys Taha Kemana at the Crusaders,
(34:55):
Josh Jacob at the Chiefs, how he got free at
the Hurricanes and others. Of course, if this is the
way that super rugby is going to continue, then bring
it on. I say, high scoring, close contest, it's a
great combo. Sixteen away from eight. Let's right come back
and see which Super rugby sides have made our power
rankings for the weekend. Piney's power rankings coming up right after.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
This ladies our rankings.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Indeed we are Monday night means we rate the Sporting
Weekend courtesee. If Piney's Power rankings, here we go ten
and right at the bottom. Wada utterly toothless in their
wet bus tickets. Slap to this guy's a second, quite simple,
(35:48):
unstoppable there three month ban, no missed Grand Slams. Something
just ain't right here. Former British number one Tim Henman says,
it all seems just a bit convenient.
Speaker 13 (35:59):
Having just won the Australian Open to miss three months
of the tour and you know therefore be eligible to play,
you know, at Roland Garrel. The timing you know, couldn't
have been any better for Sinner. But I still think
it leaves, you know, pretty sour taste for the sports.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
Nine.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
Wellington Phoenix in Melbourne, only Burgos in the box.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Here's Nickoska gos the perfect delivery and the perfect header
at Melvine.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
Victory leads and held the lead to win one nil
twenty three games at Amy Park. Now without a win
for Wellington Phoenix. Even my presence there couldn't help break
the hoodoo cheat Malwana PACIFICA a long long flight home
from Perth after last minute agony against the Force.
Speaker 7 (36:47):
Sp Donalds and as a space.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
He's got Harry Potter with him.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Hey won't let them. Hey won't go under the pin.
They couldn't shut the gut on my goodness.
Speaker 7 (36:57):
And don't believe it.
Speaker 11 (37:00):
Oh dear o deer o.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Dear indeed defeat by forty five points to forty four.
Chris Wood. Yet another Premier League goal, just one from Forest.
But Chris Wood has a chance.
Speaker 6 (37:12):
Here, Honey cut it away.
Speaker 7 (37:15):
Chris Wood and his brilliant.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Past eighteen Premier League goals for the season now for
Chris Wood. Unfortunately it came in a loss for Nottingham
Forest against Fulham, but they do stay third six. Patrick
Reid acingh the party hole at Live Golf's Adelaide tournament.
Speaker 13 (37:34):
Goodness me.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Patsy rating beauty and as in the first hour on
day one five the most incredible game of rugby league
in the UK Super League season opener, Wigan and Lee
made it to full time without having scored a point.
It was nil all, then in golden point extra time.
(38:00):
This I'm playing on the right.
Speaker 5 (38:01):
Foot with the truck gulfs Britch for the Skies A
little win. It has taken eighty two minutes for the
past points on the Super League season, but it comes
in dramatic circumstances and it's so much winning moments.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
He never has there been such excitement about a one
nil school line in Rugby League.
Speaker 11 (38:26):
Four.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Our Black camps wait.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Born and that's it.
Speaker 11 (38:30):
New Zealand left the Trination Trophy here in Karachi at
the National Bank Stadium, a team that just couldn't be defeated.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
They're silverware in the cabinet, but just the entree. We
hope now onto the Champions Trophy. Three Crusaders halfback Kyle Preston,
he's working at out of the walks for twenty two.
Speaker 7 (38:49):
He kicks her back at field.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
Oh oh, they love him down there. On debut off
the bench early to score a hat trick of tries,
Kyle Preston the first player ever to do that on
Super Rugby Devo against the Hurricanes, of course, and he's
a Wellington boy. Two to the Chiefs.
Speaker 7 (39:12):
Half statements from the Chiefs, a bomb squad effort from.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
The chief vengeance for their defeats and last year's Super
Rugby Final twenty five to fourteen winners over the Blues
at Eden Park to start the new season. One again,
our snow sporters doing us proud. Alice Robinson at the
Alpine World Ski Champs on the slopes of zal Bark
in Austria.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
Robinson for New Zealand's and look at the clock one
point seventy That is quite remarkable.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
Silver and the giant slalom Alice Robinson's first World Championship medal.
And then eighteen year old Finn Melville Ives winning his
maiden free ski halfpipe World Cup events in Calgary after
leading from the very first run. I just can't believe it.
I'm like so so snoke. I'm just so happy to put.
Speaker 11 (40:08):
Down my run and there's been a dream.
Speaker 2 (40:09):
Run of mind for so long, so just to finally
put it down in the pipe is It's unreal. Man
has run included a left double corked sixteen twenty mute
grab leading into a left alleyu of double corked flatsman
ten eighty mute grab. I don't know what any of
that means, but it sounds impressive to me. And those
are Piney's power rankings for tonight. How do you feel
(40:30):
about those?
Speaker 8 (40:31):
Yes, I did a sheepskin for twenty double twirl on
the pipes the other day.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
I don't know what.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
I'm making out with.
Speaker 8 (40:39):
Hey, Piney, you know, it's interesting with this league game
that finished one nil first round of UK Super League.
It was a game this weekend as well Gate kept
this information from you. It was a Saint Helen Saints
versus the Salford Red Devils finished eighty two nil. So
it's a bit of a bit of him. I don't
know if there's much parody in that league, but a
(41:01):
fantastic first week of storylines and the other storyline Kyle Preston,
Do you know what he was before a rugby player?
Speaker 2 (41:08):
I don't.
Speaker 8 (41:09):
Well, before you claim him as a Valentonian, he was
also a rufer, which was my old job. So rufus
unite clinie, rufus unite fantalytics stuff.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
While we're claiming stuff, do you know what school he
went to? Oh geez, no, Tawa Collins.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
I should have known that.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
My old school, Well, my old school, your old job.
He's surpassed, well, he's risen above both of those things.
Speaker 8 (41:31):
Exactly, and he lead my favorite rugby team over yours.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Happy days he did just to finish on that. Lots
of questions about his dad. Is his dad John Preston?
The answer is no, he is no relation to John Preston,
the former All Black. He's a pretty good player. Kyle
Preston six to eight News Talk seed me that hour
has fly on three and a half away from eight.
That's all we have time for. That's all we're rosted for.
Even if we wanted to carry on, we would not
