Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Bang Bang Bang Bang.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
As Joe Parker said to us last night, Daly, you
want to go and bang bang with Daniel du Bois
Willie more on that later on the piece. Good evening,
Welcome into sports to It. My name's Darcy Waldegrave. Great
to have you on board. Seven after seven it is
It's Friday night, twenty twenty five on this evening's program.

(00:59):
A bit of boxing, a bit of cricket and a
bunch of yourself, a sprinkling of me too. Looking forward
to your calls. Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty three
phone number nationwide. You can text nine two nine to two.
That's the ZBZB. The text charge does apply. I'll be
keeping you up to date with the action in Super Rugby,

(01:22):
the two well two unbeaten teams facing off the Chiefs
hosting the Crusaders. Admitted into that game so far, surprise, surprise.
It's a met apiece. Good looking crowd though it has
to be said, not saying that pretty, but it appears
to be quite a part of them down to FMG,
which is great to see. For game number one of

(01:43):
the second round of Super Pacific twenty twenty five. So
that's our plan. That's what we're going to get up
to this we net things. Great news I think for
New Zealand cricket, great news for me. You've got a
new deal with sky TV International cricket rights, six year contract.
We'll talk about the effect that we'll have on New

(02:05):
Zealand cricket on sky TV and on yourselves out there
in Vision Land. Is this the right decision to go
back to SkyTV. We'll talk about that after we've talked
with Scott Wink he's in on Crickets CEO. But before
any of that, let's do a whole lot of this.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
Let's get it on.

Speaker 5 (02:26):
Let's bang bang bang today.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Yeah, that guy.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
In Sports Today, Phoenix Geffer.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Gian Carlatario gives not a singular hoot about the building
from Auckland f C fans. Tomorrow's derby game will give
the local Black and Blue fan base, aided and abad
by the port, ample opportunity to vocally bludgeon the visiting
Black and Yellows. And that's all good by me, says

(02:54):
coach Chiefy.

Speaker 6 (02:56):
Any club he's built on great rivalry, you know, you
look at all the big Super Classic ouse.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
The atmosphere is great.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
You know.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
I think the first rby was like that, and that's great.
You know, it's good for the game. And I like
the hostile crowd.

Speaker 7 (03:07):
I love if they were like bulling for ninety minutes,
so it'd be great.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
I love that, love that take.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Joe Parker has had a last minute change of opponents,
and then buy is pauled a SICKI so mart McCauley
has stepped up. The twenty one and one Congolese is monstrous,
but promoter Eddie Hearn has spotted a hole in his defenses.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
One of book Holy's weakest points is his fitness, so
you'd have to think sitting in a congo, he's not
one hundred and ten percent, but he believes he can win.

Speaker 4 (03:38):
Good luck to him.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
The bromance between Crusader pivots shows no sign of abating.
James O'Connor's description of Taha Keimerda as the most naturally
gifted first fight he's in a scene has elicited this
from young.

Speaker 7 (03:52):
Taha obviously grew up watching him, he said, the chance
to learn off him every day, so that obviously means
a lot for me and Ben Gifted probably goes so far,
so I do take that as a content, but also
obviously Ben Gifted is not the end product that have
DoD a lot of hard work to get to go.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
On to get to and the tall Blark beat up
on Hong Kong and last night it's Asia Carper coach
a flavorlos stope for their defensive efforts.

Speaker 8 (04:13):
We really wanted to make sure that our defense was
going to get the job done. And looking at the
stats and you know, we were able to force twenty
four turnovers, I think, and really capitalize on that and
basically I think that's probably read the game was.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
One smashed them bro, and that's spot Today, eleven minutes
after seven Scott Winning joins us NOW Cricket's CEO and
New Zealan Crickets CEOs announced today that SkyTV now has
the rights to home games of cricket involving the Black
Caps and the White Ferns. To add, of course to

(04:46):
the fact they've got the overseas contracts as well. It's
a six year contract. But what about the domestic rights.
What about the effect that's going to have on us
the eyeballs, We'll find out, Scott joins us. Now, good evening, mate,
Hi Darthy, I trust you're well and absolutely stoked at
your new deal with SKYT they came out today. Tell

(05:08):
us all about that, the pleasure behind it, and I
suppose the mechanics behind that deal.

Speaker 9 (05:13):
Scott, yes, thrilled, thrilled to close that deal overnight. You know,
Sky have been obviously a long term partner of New
Zealand cricket, previously a very experience experience broadcasts of cricket,
so we're really really comfortable from that point of view.

(05:34):
TV and Z have also been a fabulous partner and
we've really enjoyed and been appreciative of the free to
wear that television New Zealander has provided. So as part
of this deal, one of the key elements was to
ensure there would continue to be free to wear aspects
to it. So eachat the first game of each T

(05:59):
twenty series will be will be free to wear, and
we're also going to continue to show Soups Smash.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
On free to air. So no, we're really really delighted.

Speaker 9 (06:10):
You know, it's a tough broadcast market, so to lock
in a long term deal at this stage gives New
Zealand cricket, you know, some some real certainty around commercials,
but also reach ensuring we maintain some free to air.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
So how long is the deal for Scott?

Speaker 9 (06:27):
So we've got the remainder of this year and then
next season with TV and Z and then from twenty
six to twenty seven we will move to Sky for
the six years following tell.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Us about the Super Smash situation. So that's purely going
to be free to wear? Is it going to actually
be on the Sky platform as well? Just sharing out
and that's that's the whole competition itself.

Speaker 9 (06:54):
No, So what we what we what we carved out
particularly was as I say, one international T twenty of
each series together with the Super Smash that we plan
to package up together to then you know, to then
potentially provide to TV and Z.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Or another free to wear provider.

Speaker 9 (07:15):
So the Super Smash won't be shown on on Sky,
it'll be a free to wear provider.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Right and you're not sure where that's going to go yet,
still negotiating.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Is that open for everybody?

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Scott? Yes? Absolutely, yep.

Speaker 9 (07:28):
So this the deal with Sky was purely we agree
to just before international matches and that we would deal
with the Super Smash separately. You know, it was really
important to us to ensure that the Super Smash stage
free to wear because of that, you know that that
fan engagement aspect to it. And look, the numbers have

(07:49):
been fantastic this year. The quality of cricketers obviously been incredible,
and the numbers that tv Z have sort of shown
as you're on Super Smash have been great.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
So that's been a huge takeaway out of this delance
away from Sky over the last few years. What you
went to Sparkman TV and Z now back again that
free to were actually works for eyeballs. This is something
you need to be engaged with.

Speaker 9 (08:15):
Yeah, it works for eyeballs.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
Obviously, it doesn't work quite.

Speaker 9 (08:18):
So well for the commercial aspects, and so that's why
you need to balance it up because ultimately the New
Zealand cricket financial model is still heavily reliant on broadcast
fees and in particular domestic broadcast fees. So it's a
case of balancing up getting those commercial broadcast fees by

(08:40):
having some cricket behind a paywall while trying to maintain
some free to wear to kind of continue to generate
fan engagement. So it is a difficult balancing act. If
we could, we'd have absolutely everything free to wear, but
that's just unrealistic from a commercial model.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Scott, was there much of a fight? Did you have
to challenge anyone else to get these? Just roll in
and go?

Speaker 3 (09:08):
TV ands can't afford it. Here's our offer and how
did that end up working through?

Speaker 5 (09:13):
No.

Speaker 9 (09:13):
Look, we've been in discussions with both TV and Z
and Sky about our future rights for probably about nine months,
and so this was just a unique opportunity came up
with Sky. You know, they made a very compelling offer
to us and it made sense to look at that now.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
But as I say, one of the.

Speaker 9 (09:39):
Key elements to it was to ensure that we still
maintained the free to wear element.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
What are they paying for it?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Oh well, I couldn't tell you, but I couldn't tell you. No,
it's commercially sensitive. But you know, look at it's a
fair deal.

Speaker 9 (09:55):
Look, we're obviously really pleased, but it's a good deal
for Sky too, because you know, the Black Caps and
White Fern's brands are absolutely humming at the moment, and
you know, we expect a partner together to really drive
the Sky business as well. So so look, I think
they are really pleased to have us back, and we're

(10:16):
obviously really pleased with the with the you know, with
the commercials and been able to kind of get some
certainty for revenue streams sort of long term.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
We just to reiterate that they came to you with
the offer. I mean, you've been in negotiation, but they
basically said this is what we've got, and you just
rolled with that because it was good enough.

Speaker 9 (10:36):
Yeah, I mean I've known Sophie for about thirty years.
She's actually had law school with my wife. So so
we had breakfast about nine months ago as you kind
of do, and just started talking about what a deal
might look like if you know, if we if we
decide to do.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
That, and then just you know, the opportunity came up.

Speaker 9 (10:58):
I think you know, black Caps brand is flying high.
You know, Sky wanted to ensure they have some really
good content. So there was just a confluence of things
that came together at this time that that.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Sort of you know, pushed us together.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Great having it on one platform from my point of view,
and plainly MoMA Sky customer have been for as long
as I can remember, not that it's difficult to switch
back and forth, but having all of the cricket on
the one platform, not you guys oversee someone else back
here at home. I suppose that that ease of access
has got to be a consideration too.

Speaker 9 (11:37):
Yeah, I think Look, I think people WI almost view
sky as a as a little bit of a utility.
So so the feedback that we've had has been has
been very positive. But you know that we will all
going well continue to also have cricket on TV and
Z with the Super Smash and potentially one of those

(11:59):
international matches each series, and TV and Z has done
you know, in conjunction with Whisper has done a really
job with the cricket too, So they'll still have to
switch potentially switch between two platforms, but in terms of yes,
all the international stuff it will be on one platform.
I suspect that's going to make things a lot a
lot easier for people.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
And as far as confirmation of carrying on with the overseas, right,
how long is that locked in for? What do you
have to go through to make sure that is secure
again for a similar length of time?

Speaker 9 (12:30):
Yeah, Well, well look last year we locked in a
long term deal with Sony to show cricket into India
and that's our biggest that's our biggest broadcasting contracts. So
we're in a great position in that, you know, our
two biggest broadcasting contracts are now locked in until thirty one.

(12:50):
That provides you know, a lot of certainty around being
able to you know, first of all invest in our game,
but also you know, continue to pay our players so
that you know, again nice to have that. And then
the other major revenue streamers as ic C distributions and
again that's driven by broadcasting and DU India two and

(13:15):
you know that's locked in for about another three or
four years.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Lessons out of the time away and the transfer between platforms,
anything key that you've actually picked up on that time.
And I suppose any regrets as to the decisions that
were made, not that they were under your watch and
I've been there what year and a half now, But
what do you take out of that whole? But that
revolution for one of a better phrase.

Speaker 9 (13:40):
Yeah, Look, I think I think Spark coming into the
sports market was.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
Actually incredibly positive.

Speaker 9 (13:48):
For first of all, the technology you know, they came
in and their platform was very very good, and that
meant that everyone including Sky have had to lift their
game and also TV and Z they were probably almost
too early. I think if you were doing a Spark
deal now, with the fact that almost all TVs are

(14:09):
smart TVs, so therefore you'll be able to have a
Spark Sport app sitting and sitting on your TV, I
think Smark Sport probably would have made it, you know,
would have found it.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Far easier to really get good traction.

Speaker 9 (14:23):
So look a bit of a timing thing, you know,
the Sparksport deal that was then ovated TVNZ. It has
been phenomenal for New Zealand cricket really, but you know,
if you're doing the Spark deal now, I think there
would have been a far better chance of it being successful.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
And finally, Scott Wenning, CEO he Cricket. Now's all thanks
very much for your time in your availability. Like I
start watch the first innings, I'm up till two in
the morning. Okay, as the see of New Zealand Cricket,
are you allowed to stay up the whole night and
then check into work about two in the afternoon.

Speaker 4 (14:57):
It's exhawesome. No, I've got to I've got to set
the standards.

Speaker 9 (15:00):
I've got to kind of be the last here and
first in So what what I typically do is, you know,
watch couple of hours and then I'll sort of wake
up in the middle of the night and watch an
hour and then and then get up at five am
for the for the last hour and a half, which
makes yeah, which makes for very tiring periods when we're
playing overseas. But absolutely delighted with the way we're going

(15:23):
with black Caps going at the moment, you know, the
way they played in that first game. So hopefully we
can get on a roll and and you know, and
go as deep into the tournament as we can.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Go deep and go right to the very top. And
if I have to stay up all night for four
or five games, I'll take it. Get in there again
amongst Scott winning things for your time, mate, you go
well of a great weekend.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
Thanks to r C Bluey for the DMO.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
We've got the breakdown on Sports Talk col.

Speaker 10 (15:52):
News Talk.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
SEW. This is Sports Look on News Talks. Abe Chiefs
leading Crusaders out to twelve minutes ten nil. So far
it's got waning. Joins us Or joined US selling credit
CEO sky I now have the rights for a six
year contract beyond twenty twenty six. Free to wear though,

(16:16):
well that's still very much up in the year, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
Does that mean Sky doesn't want it?

Speaker 3 (16:20):
What does it mean? They're actually really really interested in
keeping at New Zealand Cricket the Free too Wear site
because it attracts people on his eyeballs there as well.
I like this that it's going to Sky. I'm all
for ease of access. I can do it all off
one remote call me selfish, but they need money otherwise
cricket dies. Good day, Chris, how are you?

Speaker 4 (16:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (16:41):
I disagree he's made a confuse mistake that cricket needs
more promotion than rugby. I mean, I don't actually really
care about the footy that much, but I'm a cricket
man and I've got Sky as well. But they did
a lot bit of job promoting domestic cricket, Test Cricket,

(17:06):
one day, cricket and Nashley into everyone's homes. Cricket has
boomed the last two years. And the other thing is
Mate Sky and the poop look sex year. If that's
a joke, I'll tell you what. The receivers have been
knocking on Sky's door in two years.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Well, been a TV and Z in any bitter state.

Speaker 11 (17:25):
No, and I blame Willis. She's cut everything back. What
does she know about cricket anyway?

Speaker 3 (17:30):
Well, I'm not allowed to climb into political debate because
it's not but I don't know when you look at
his own cricket, surely they've got to get some money
for their output. Otherwise dualgo broke too. And if Sky
willing to pay, why not go. I think you're a subscriber,
so it doesn't matter to you because you've already got
it on tap right.

Speaker 11 (17:50):
Oh yeah, sure, And last time, I remember what's his name,
you know, the previous Seer that he's played for ND
about one hundred years ago. David White, Yeah, saying oh,
you know, Sky were disappointed, but you know TV and
Z had stumped up with the money. Well that was
under the government and Nicholas coming and cuddle that back.
But anyway, the end, But at the end of the day,

(18:13):
I would have asked him about the contract with English
cricket because they haven't had it, and none of the
English Test series in England in June July when it's
good to watch here in the winter have been shown
and they have not got they have not got a
contract the Sky has not got a contract with English
Cricket Board. So are you going to see the Ashes? No?

(18:35):
Are you going to see the other home series in England?

Speaker 7 (18:37):
No?

Speaker 3 (18:38):
I think though that that develops in time, and I
think the questions of that. I'm a cricket fan. I'd
love to watch it, but talk about the wrong end
of the day. Will they actually get people watching it?
It's in the middle of the night and you've got
to worry about cosper where Surely what.

Speaker 11 (18:54):
About the Ashes? It doesn't matter when it's long.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Well no, but maybe to you and maybe to me
because I've got some real issues around cricket, and I'll
watch it.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
I don't care what it is.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
But if you're forking out a whole the money for
exclusive rights for an ASHES series that's in England, how
much is that worth when you consider that not many
people are actually going to bother watching it in Britain
and Australia. Yeah, sure there'll be a lot of people
on it, But in Britain and I think that's going
to be a series by series.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
Deal.

Speaker 7 (19:24):
I think.

Speaker 11 (19:26):
I'd watch it. I'd watch it till you know, I'd
watch it a midnight then record it just like wo
you know, watch it but.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Not ever runs like.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
Not ever runs like us.

Speaker 11 (19:38):
No, I know that, mate, But anyway, we'll see what's happening.
But this stage I'm pretty negative about it, right.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
I've just been told Chris and you'll love this that
any daft producer extraordinary Ashes in Australia this time around,
and Sky I have a deal with Ashes with Australian cricket,
so they'll be fine.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
So we'll get it.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
I'm saying about the other side of the world, when
it's a really usual, difficult hour. Why would you buy
those rights if you're not going to hear anyone watching it?
Doesn't make commercial since and this is where we're at
in this day and age, no one has any money.
Well it's a couple of blokes through they live in America,
they own everything, but over here no one's got any money.

(20:16):
Very very careful, parsimonious if you will, around that they're
spending anywhere. And Sky have made an effort. They've climbed
in and they said we're going to give you this much,
we want this much. Are you keen injured cricket? And
there's two ways this could have gone. Skyt Weening Zelling Cricket,

(20:38):
and he said it was very important that we had
a free to air platform, very important because it worked
for us and got people engaged. So that's their line,
But it could have been a case worth Sky. We
want international, we're not interested in domestic cricket. We couldn't
care less. We're not paying for it. Don't you don't

(20:58):
want it?

Speaker 2 (21:00):
So they don't get it.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
So what do they do?

Speaker 3 (21:04):
They packaged it up with one free game that started
a T twenty series with the Super Smash, and they
try and push that on a freeowere station, probably TV
and Z because they have a relationship with them. Are
there any other freedowere stations left? I don't even know.

(21:26):
I know mack up a studio here. I'll give you
a commentary. It'll be different. Oh one hundred eighty ten
eighty lines are open. Chief Leading Crusaders are to eighteen
minutes still ten ZIP and new Zelling Cricket making the
right decision by returning for the most part with the
international game to Sky TV. Does that sit with you?

(21:49):
I'm fine, I like it. You may disagree.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
I love if you did. To tell me, what is
the news.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
CB on sports or.

Speaker 1 (22:08):
Forget the riffs call. You make a call on eight
hundred and eighty eight sports talking on your home of sport.
These talks have be talks.

Speaker 12 (22:18):
Fuel Crusaders straight back, but cuting Grace on.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
The outside fires.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
An inside park to pass to who Kyle resident he
scored again. That's forts Trice in a game in a bit.
So the Crusaders are going to convert there it is
that is now team play seven Chiefs. So the Crusaders
after twenty two minutes super Aby Pacific twenty twenty five.
It's quite a burst down the flank from Oh Collen Grace,

(22:55):
nice week. Let's get back to the phones O one
hundred and eighty ten eighty if Sky made the right
so News on Cricket made the right call by returning
to Sky. TV galliances with spark that fell apart off
they shot to TV and Z now back to Sky
again recycling Hello Allen.

Speaker 13 (23:16):
Oh look at that. Absolutely it's a return to normal.
I mean, you know, I remember watching crickets a friends
and I he's taking the day off school to go
and play backyard cricket, and I think watch the riches.
I don't know whether but TV.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Allen, it was free. You could do that if you
had to pay for it, could you still do that?
That's the issue I think people have.

Speaker 13 (23:42):
Yeah, so it's it's it's really important. Actually when I
went to Spark that was like a free ride taken
away from everybody.

Speaker 11 (23:50):
And chriss is.

Speaker 13 (23:53):
You know, he's you know, he's got a point. You know,
the Ashes series. So there's probably a lot of customers
for Sky who would maybe drop Sky or but if
the Ashes series on, they'll buy it.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
Well, we just looked at the contract again.

Speaker 3 (24:07):
From what I believe though, the contract with Australian Cricket
does end at the end of this summer, so the
Ashes at the end, so that's twenty five twenty six.
But I would be stunned if Sky didn't do another
deal with Australian Cricket and picked it up again.

Speaker 13 (24:24):
They'll get a lot of subscribers, and there's a lot
of sort of people, you know, there's quite an amount
of people out there emerging Mendigan population too.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
They liked, well have you got Sky Ellen, we hung
up on himself.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
It's a good trick magic be a Sky or not.
A lot of people would have turned off.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
When suddenly cricket became free to wear and that was
it accidentally fell into the arms of TV and Z
didn't it once Spark went bally up. I'm not a
fan of rugby and there's no cricket. Would you Is
this enough to drive you back to Sky if you've
left because of the free to air?

Speaker 2 (25:12):
And do you do that reluctantly? Do you do it
with open arms?

Speaker 3 (25:18):
Status quiet? For me, it doesn't bother me, but that's
my job. Very different out there for you people who
can't can't claim your Sky in your Texas text line
nineteen ninety two, that is z B z B and
is in a crickets moving on from the odd golden
era to having perennially good teams and putting it now

(25:39):
with the best and they are sean thank you, right
decision to go back to Sky. But so much damage
has been done regard the fan connection. I don't understand that.
How has the damage been done with the fan connection?
It is it damaged because the fans that loved it

(26:01):
on Sky they can't be damaged because they still got
it on free to air. Going back to Sky and
then taking the games away from free to air, are
they true fans if they wouldn't pay for it in.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
The first place.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
Oh, one hundred eighty ten eighty lines are open twenty
five minutes to eight.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Hi, Sean, how are you.

Speaker 7 (26:24):
Good?

Speaker 6 (26:24):
Darky? That was quick good? But hey then I think
it's a good thing that skoty. I've got the coverage back.
I've kind of I've missed some of the stuff that
Scott used to do on the periphery of the actual
games that I think Sky does better than a lot
of other service providers.

Speaker 3 (26:41):
So the exterior, the add ons, if you will, Yeah,
I think sorry, t's just been sinbin. The big lot
for the Chiefs has gone for a dangerous tackle carry on.

Speaker 6 (26:55):
Yeah, yeah, they're peripheral stuff. I don't know, things like
the cricket shows and all that sort of thing. I
think it whilst it might not be free to air,
I think the game almost gets more of a profile
because they they do more with the coverage than the
likes of TV.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
In Dead probably takes sense to stage more than TV
and Z would want to do more with it. They
simply haven't got the money to do it.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
They can't.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
They focus on the pictures and that's it. They're going
to go move and spend your money somewhere else. So,
at least for Sky, a sports station, the focus is
more on the game itself.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
I think so, and I think Sky. I think they
have more broadcasting either talent or thumbs on the seat
to do it to the thing, so I think they can.
It's more scalable for them than the likes of TV.

Speaker 3 (27:44):
In dead to have did you follow Cricket to Spark
like did you did you climb on board?

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Did you change? Did you drop Sky?

Speaker 6 (27:54):
And they didn't drop Sky. I just paid more money
got another subscription because I love loving the cricket mate
for the thing, but I thought Spark was pretty disappointing
with the cricket to the deal. Know, yeah, you got
the games. They were there for the thing, but I
don't know there's I think with any sport there's more
to it than.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
Just the games, and I think much perit of package
on you. Sure, hey, thanks very much for sharing a
one hundred eighty ten eighty. If you want to claim
on in, I'd give you updates on the second practice
of the supercars, but really only petchel heads are interested
in that, so I won't bother. Thank you, Producer Duff

(28:35):
seventy seven. That's news talks. There be on sports talk
off to Reard next Saudi Arabia. Liam Napier is over
there for in z me give us the latest on
did Daniel Dubois pull a siki or what? What do
you have the hoods par to reneg on to deal

(28:56):
with this Sadi royal family and what's going on with
Parker and the new Dudel Is it a chance? Find
out from Liam Napier? Up next news talks?

Speaker 10 (29:08):
Heb, no, you c some stars.

Speaker 3 (29:18):
This cry some by myself one supports the gone news talks.
Here b go to Liam naked Rider for the New
Zealand Herald is over and you Yard at the moment
for this big fight night talk about the disappearance.

Speaker 2 (29:33):
Of du bike man. It's not synesthes just he's got sick.

Speaker 3 (29:36):
Right, How did Joe Parker find out about it? Take
a listen, just been announced.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
Oh let's go.

Speaker 14 (29:45):
We're not we're not scared. Everybody, Well, yeah, we're not
scared of when.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
Did you learn it was gonna be my because it's
just been an outstairs just just.

Speaker 14 (29:53):
So like I didn't to be to be fair, I
didn't I got some calls over when we was on
the press conference, we got some calls. There was three
people mentioned. Joe never turned anybody down. All amaz are welcome,
Let's go.

Speaker 5 (30:09):
I disappointed out to fight isn't happening, Listen, it's It's
all a part of a lot of boxing and part
of the journey. But I guess one opportunity goes away
and anyone comes in, I'll find you. Marta to McCaulay,
who's been waiting for a big fight. So let's get
it on and hopefully we can revisit this fight down
in the line. I want to be champing of the world.

Speaker 14 (30:28):
I'll be fair play to your Pcoley's the most avoided
heavyweight out there.

Speaker 5 (30:31):
Riccoley is the most avoided heavyweight. But I love to
challenge myself myself. Andy Spencer sat down and had a
discussion with Turkey and we just had a quick talk
and we were welcomed anyone. And now we've got Martin peccauley,
which is great.

Speaker 7 (30:45):
The IVF situation, I mean, you'll have your chance skin
at some point.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
I'll have my chance to get at some point, but
for now now my focus on Martin McCauley, right he's
a beast, so let's get ready.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
It's so good the way he weared me mask there
he got told and it's like, yeah, I would take
it on. Where's boxing, let's go, I'm into it. He
didn't miss a beat, although he'd be thinking himself, why
he's so my chance to pick up a world title?

Speaker 2 (31:08):
How dare you do? Bois?

Speaker 3 (31:10):
Enough, it's set off to Saudi Arabia. Now we're Liam
Napier away.

Speaker 10 (31:16):
It's made evening dars.

Speaker 3 (31:19):
You're over there in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and
all hell broke loose, pandemonium over like New Zealand time.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
When Daniel Dubois like, what's he done? I haven't heard?
Is he pulled a sickie?

Speaker 3 (31:31):
I mean, if we heard any news about why he's
walked from this title.

Speaker 15 (31:35):
Fight, details very sketchy gars or we know his promoter
Frank Warren would not divulge details. And it does seem
a little bit murky, and you know, this is the
world of boxing. Twenty four hours earlier, du Bois performed
his public workout and it didn't seem to be any
issues there.

Speaker 10 (31:52):
He was giving interviews.

Speaker 15 (31:54):
And then a day later he's gone nowhere to be seen,
wasn't in promotional photos. But it's a massive setback for
Joe because he's waited nine years for a second crack
at another world title.

Speaker 10 (32:09):
He hasn't fought since March.

Speaker 15 (32:11):
He's put all his preparations in for this and to
have a late change like this, you know, will be
incredibly frustrating.

Speaker 3 (32:20):
Rumors around Dubois and why they've made this decision, because
if he is pulling a sickie, there's got to be
an endgame.

Speaker 15 (32:27):
Well, I guess the conspiracy. Theorist in Midas looks to
the undisputed fight on the horizon with Alexander Usik, the
Ukrainian kingpin of the heavyweight division, and the massive payday
that would be for Daniel Dubois, probably in the vicinity
of twenty million dollars. He holds the w the IBF title,

(32:51):
and so Olexander Usik holds all the rest of the
heavyweight belts.

Speaker 10 (32:57):
So that is a massive fight.

Speaker 15 (32:58):
Maybe his promoter and Daniel got together and said, hey,
this isn't worth the risk. But there is also that
he is sick, that he's come down with some form
of illness and is not able to fight. So all
we know is that they're telling everyone he's sick, that
he was being a test by a doctor. And now

(33:20):
Joe Parker is still fighting, but on twenty four hours notice,
he's preparing for a new opponent.

Speaker 3 (33:25):
He'd got to be pretty brave to across the Saudi
royal family. So I'm presuming it is reasonably truthful what
he's going through. Let's talk about NICOLEI, the guy that
he's fighting. Eddie Hearn said, hey, look he's a big,
scary man. He's got a great record, he's ranked high
right across IBFWO, etc.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
But he's a chance he's going to run out of steam.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
His fitness is not the greatest and he's been sitting
around on the congo, so he's ripe. When you consider
the ability of Joe Parker to pace his fight, so
it might be all right.

Speaker 15 (33:57):
Yeah, I'm a bit nervous to us. I think, Look,
Joe should have the endurance. He's incredibly well prepared in
terms of his body comp position. He's going to weigh
in at a career heaviest for this fight. That was
always the plan. He'll be around one hundred and eighteen
hundred and nineteen kg, which should give him more power
and more durability, which he wants against his really heavy

(34:21):
hitting opponents. And mentally he's very confident p Parker based
on the work he's put in with any Lee and Ireland.
You know he's waited for this chance for a long time.
But look, Martin McCole is the most avoided fighter in
the heavyweight division.

Speaker 10 (34:38):
They call him the Boogeyman, and.

Speaker 15 (34:41):
In his last fight in August, he absolutely steamrolled a
guy called Jared Anderson, who was a highly touted prospect
out of America, and he flawed him inside five rounds,
just to really underline.

Speaker 10 (34:56):
How just how powerful he is.

Speaker 15 (34:58):
So similarly to Dubois, similarly to Jhontay Wilder and Zang,
who Parker defeated in his last two fights.

Speaker 10 (35:07):
This is another very heavy handed.

Speaker 15 (35:09):
Guy that Parker will need to be wary of early on,
Box and move and then, like you say, down the stretch,
take Bakoli into deep waters, test his fatigue, and then
he could be vulnerable.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
Why would he say yes to a fight like this,
do you think, Liam? Because it does represent a clear
and present danger. We know he's brave, we know he'll
take any fight. It doesn't matter, and here the same
situation when people didn't want to fight him as recently
as a couple of years ago because he was a
dangerous prospect.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
So why would Parker take a fight like this song?

Speaker 15 (35:42):
I think it's as simple as keeping the card and
checked us that you do not want to get off
sides with the turk Alishik and the Saudi ruling class. Essentially,
that there's so much money tied up in these events
and they want to keep the card going.

Speaker 10 (36:02):
Joseph Parker's here, he's putting.

Speaker 15 (36:04):
All the work, he's ready to fight, and the promoters
want this to go ahead. So look, Joseph, his reputation
in recent times is that he ducts no one. He
will take on anyone that that comes his way, anyone
that they want to feed him.

Speaker 10 (36:20):
And so look he's under contractor fights.

Speaker 15 (36:24):
He's here and he's ready to go, and he's I
guess what, above all else, he's proven again that he's
incredibly fearless.

Speaker 3 (36:33):
You're over there, Liam, taking a good look. You kind
of only disappeared a matter of a few days ago.
Tell us about her.

Speaker 2 (36:40):
What's it like?

Speaker 3 (36:41):
Because you're a foreign journalist, so I expect you're getting
fated and treated like a like a god.

Speaker 10 (36:48):
No, I'm not sure about that, but I wish.

Speaker 15 (36:53):
Look, it's an interesting place my first time in the
Middle East. It's in the middle of the desert, obviously,
so it's a bit of a I guess you could
say a bit of a contrive world. Where the press
comments was last night, it was in a place called
Boulevard City, which is very strange places, but like Disneyland,

(37:14):
there's a lot going on.

Speaker 10 (37:15):
There's a cable car and.

Speaker 15 (37:17):
Lots of music and eateies and then you have this
press conference there, and then not too far from there
you've got a UNESCO Heritage site where the Saudi ruling
family used to live. And yeah, sort of desert all around,
very busy, a lot of money in this area with.

Speaker 10 (37:37):
Oil, so yeah, just sort of soaking it in and
taking your look around.

Speaker 15 (37:42):
But it's I guess that the money involved in this
boxing event now has certainly changed the game. READD is
now the basically the de facto home of boxing because
of the money the persons involved. We're seeing now the
best fighting the best, So it's very the boxing landscape

(38:04):
has been turned on.

Speaker 10 (38:05):
Its head in the past couple of years. And in
terms of what we're seeing with.

Speaker 15 (38:09):
The best fighting the best, we haven't seen that for
a long time. And you only have to look at
this card and go through it to see that it's
been called the card of the century. So in terms
of the sport and the fans that they getting great matchups.

Speaker 3 (38:23):
Now, I love David Higgins a few years ago, So
how on earth did they make these fights when suddenly
they had all the best boxers in the world. He goes, Oh,
it's quite simple, Darcy. They put everybody around the big table,
put a sack of money in the middle of it
to do what some of this that everybody signed. Well,
it's pretty simple, isn't it. It's in a complex sport like.

Speaker 15 (38:42):
That, that's the money talks to us. And look, if
you and I were offered ten million to get in
the ring and pound each other, I think we'd probably jump.

Speaker 10 (38:51):
At that as well.

Speaker 3 (38:52):
It wouldn't last five minutes, mate, for either of us
would both get the stitch and collapse. So just at
an Enlamb napier. What's he pocketing from this? You get
any idea what Joe's going to walk away with.

Speaker 10 (39:01):
I think it's single figures.

Speaker 15 (39:02):
But You're probably looking at something in the vicinity of
fire five to seven million, so it's not it's not
a bad payday.

Speaker 10 (39:10):
But if if he gets through this.

Speaker 15 (39:12):
Then he puts himself right in line for a title shot,
hopefully for Parker's sake, and you're looking to double that purse, so.

Speaker 10 (39:22):
Big, big sums, big figures.

Speaker 15 (39:25):
And the other thing for Joe is he he is
putting his WBO Interium title on the line, so he
was set to vacate that heavy fort Daniel Dubois. But
now that fight's not happening, that that title does go
on the line this weekend, So a lot at stake
for Joe in terms of his well right now the

(39:47):
purse is involved, but also his short and long term
future in the sport.

Speaker 1 (39:51):

Speaker 2 (40:04):
Joe Parker.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
There was Liam Napier joining us from Oria, Saudi Arabia
talking to us about that drama that went down after
Duboi went in nice week. Joe Parker, Well, I have
to be positive about this because I've already bought the fight.

Speaker 2 (40:24):
Hey, it's a shame. It's not a title fight. It
really is.

Speaker 3 (40:30):
Who knows how to joint me? That's boxing for you.
Seventeen fourteen, halftime.

Speaker 2 (40:34):
Crusaders, Chiefs. Chiefs actually scored? Is it Xavier? What's his
the halfback's name?

Speaker 3 (40:42):
Bro? That's right, he scored just after the man came
on from the yellow card to but he came back
and then they hit back again to the Crusaders. Sev
Reese setting up Ethan Black at It seventeen fourteen. She's
pretty tight, she's pretty aggressive, she's pretty brutal.
