list right Former Keywek Skysport Rugby League analyst Richie Barnett

from yesterday's game against the Raiders that need to be
addressed and addressed fairly rapidly it's only round one. Let's

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Be a somewhat brutal reality check for the Warriors in
Las Vegas yesterday.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
The Camera Raiders triumph in Vegas. They have come here
with a mission and they have run over the Warriors.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
They did. Indeed, the Warriors going down thirty points to
eight to the Canberra Raiders in Las Vegas conceding five
tries to two and being outclassed in pretty much every
area of the game. Let's bring in form a Kee,
longtime rugby league professional and Skysport rugby league analyst Richie Barnett.
Always good to chat rugby league with you. Richie. How
worried though should we be about that first up performance

(02:49):
from the twenty twenty five New Zealand Warriors.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
Yeah, I mean you'd certainly be worried about the performance.
Being the first up game in Las Vegas. You know
that all the hype was real and the tone was
spit for a fantastic matchup and what we had last
year was incredible, but they didn't deliver as we'd expect
and there was one side camera who were incredible, to
be honest, and the Warriors were just suffocated. It was

(03:15):
really concerning.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
What will be taking up most of coach Andrew Webster's
thinking time on the flight home.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Oh, there was certainly the execution part, but I think
without their go forward and their territory, it was really
difficult and that was because of camera's brutal defense and
they just basically, you know, over that period of the game.
They just wore them down physically in the attack and
physically in defense. So they'll be concentrating on really getting

(03:42):
the yardage game going, getting into the territory where they
can attack straighten up the defense. They were very much
east to west. They weren't direct enough. We saw that
in the trial matches where they were really executing their
set pieces and their shape looked really, really good. I
thought Metcalf played really well in the pre season in
terms of squaring the set piece up and there was

(04:05):
a nice balance, but just seem to fall the pieces.
And I guess you know, when you're up against a
side who was probably one of the fittest team on
the well in the comp and also the youngest. They're
the youngest side in the competition, believe it or not.
They've lost quite a lot of their strike power over
the last year, and so as the Warriors, but they
performed extremely well.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
What a team like the Raiders is dominating you like
that physically when the Warriors had the ball, what's the
best way to combat that.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
It's interesting, and it really is. It's just an aggressive approach.
They really do have to match the energy. But when
I look at it, actually when I start to delve
into it, they have really traditionally in their forward pack,
it's pretty straight up and down. Kirk Capewell. You see
the Cordy who just runs direct. There's no real footwork
in the way they play. Most of them don't have

(04:57):
a step with Aidan Fanila Blake's gone, so there was
a player that actually could step through. Most of them
run direct. There's no real footwork late footwork at the line.
Most of the forwards actually in the camera raiders are
a prototype that has got one strength and secondly that
footwork of the line late that gets them through through

(05:17):
the line. And they're really physical. For some strange reason,
they are very very strong players. I couldn't believe it.
I couldn't believe what I've seen, and I don't think
it gave it just justice when you were actually watching
about how physical that game was.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Indeed, well you talk about the writer's stepping through the
defensive line. The Warriors missed forty tackles twenty eight in
the first half alone. Richie, how do you explain that.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
Well, it's this young fellow called Tamale and he got
weeks at Fallback and Tomorrow and Chris sebast In Chris.
Somehow they have got the strength to get through. They
were throwing numbers at them. They would have three or
four tacklers in there and they'd still get through one.
It's an attitude. Secondly, it's energy. Thirdly, you've got to
give it back to them as well. Sometimes you've got

(06:08):
to pivot a little bit too. It looked like that
was again very pedestrian in the way it is. It. Actually,
the game actually unfolds as you start to win the
battle of the ruck, and once you start winning that
things are different. Then you start to question everything in
your seeing as we are questioning everything now what needs
to change? And then we start to look at the
spine what are they not doing? Well, you can't do

(06:30):
anything if you're not going ford, youre not winning the ruck,
and you're not being physical in the ruck. And so
there's so many facets to where they lost the game,
and it all combines to a really average game where
you just can't win anything. The kicking game, they were
back at the forty kicking and most occasions that's why
it looked pretty boring because they were kicking it on
the forty. They couldn't challenge their kick, so they weren't

(06:51):
building pressure off the kick. So everything was just a
real Mundane watch, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
It was? Yeah, And you landed on such a good
point about the halves and whether we can assess them
or not without a platform. But how did you assessed
the performance of Chanelle, Harris Devita and Luke Metcalfe. No
Sewn Johnson anymore, he's a big loss, But what about
these two?

Speaker 4 (07:13):
I just think you can't even really gauge it when
you forward's are not going forward to now had three runs.
I think Luke metcalf had three runs. And they'll direct
thin thing with both of them there there there, they're
run the runners of the ball, so you're not going
to get creativity as such, but there'll only be effective
if you're going forward to winning that battle. So there
wasn't really anything. I thought Chanelle's kicking game was pretty

(07:35):
good considering we was kicking it from Luke had obviously
not a great game on that right side they tried to.
If we saw what they they were constructing, it was
very very east to west, you know. And in the
trial match I saw something that was quite different than
what I've seen in a while they executed it well.
There was nice synergy and balance between what they're doing

(07:59):
in the pre seasons, but this one here just looked
like they were starting new. They didn't know each other's play.
I know that you build chemistry and combination, but to
start the season off they win the battle of the ruck.
That's concerning.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
And to build chemistry and combination, you have to play
together often, don't you. But do you think Andrew Webster
will be attempted at all to think about TOMIGHTI Martin
in one of those positions, I reckon.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
There's a huge consideration what I do have an issue with,
And like anything, when you leak, we're not in that
battle of the ruck. You get exposed on the enders,
you know, decision making. As much as we've got real young, talented,
robust runners such as Leo Tower, they were pretty he
was exposed to early, you know, when they scored the
first try Sebastian Chris and the left And that was

(08:51):
a real, real simple thing for me where an experience
comes into play. He turned, his body was in front
of the defender inside he turns by the inward, so
he was stuck. He was gone then and there, and
they scored a try, which is the first try of
the game, which could have been saved, and that's the
start of the game. For the for the camera wires,
it's those decision making from youngsters, which is concerning for

(09:13):
me because when you're on a when you when things
happen for you, it's easy to defend. But when things
are you're against the war, that's when the true defenders
come out. And I just wonder if they start to
look at Harper to come into the side or experience center,
because they've got an experience on the centers, that's where
all the defense, that's where all the attack goes. That's

(09:34):
where all the decision makers have to be really really strong.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
Do you reckon? He'll stick with Roger too? About to
shake on the wing?

Speaker 4 (09:40):
Yeah? Made he was He carried the bull ti unsred meters.
Is that he was the only one that featured really
highly out there. They're back three. I think we tell
them scored about two measured about two hundred meters and
we struggled. I think there was about three or four
forwards that actually got over one hundred meters, So just
highlighted maybe they I think they should they wouldn't stick

(10:01):
with the side, I think they've got an opportunity to
actually prove people wrong and show because I've trained that
way for that side. I don't think they'll change much
in it. They just need to show up in terms
of their attitude, their directness, their physicality, their grit. Just
like what we saw in camera, they were gritty. That's
their identity. That's our identity as an organization is to

(10:24):
be gritty and uncompromising. And that's exactly what the Worries
need to bring to the next game against Manly, which
is going to be a very difficult.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Game for them to turn around, just to finish, just
to finish. Do you reckon the occasion got to them
at all?

Speaker 4 (10:42):
I struggled with understanding as the occasion did. They had
ample time to get settled, to go through the first
days and have a bit of fun and wallow and
all the lights and the sentry overload. I personally think
that's an excuse. I personally think that you know, you've
looked at a camera side that's way and experienced, and

(11:05):
we're experienced enough to go on there and do the job.
So I think it's more for an excuse than it
is to come up with other ideas, because clearly they
didn't win anything in that game, and that's every facet
of the game. That's not because they were overwhelmed by it,
are overwhelmed by not delivering.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Always appreciate your analysis, Richie, thanks so much for joining us.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
Mate.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
Here's Buddy good only.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Mate, that's Richie Bunnett, former Kiwi Ragby League analyst, astute
observer of the game, Skysport Ragbill League commentator, Your chance
to react Warriors fans O eight one hundred and eighty
ten eighty. Where should Andrew Webster be focusing his attention?
In your view? There are a few areas to choose from,
and Richie picked up on a number of them. There

(11:47):
it just seemed like they were second best everywhere yesterday
miss tackles on attack, making errors, not physical enough, no
platform for the halves. There's quite a bit there. I'd
also be very very keen to hear from you on
the Vegas experiment. Should we call it that the Vegas experiment?
What do you make of this? Cameron? George told me

(12:09):
yesterday on the show that they pitched for the chance
to go, they had to actually put a proposal to
the NROL to say, hey, we'd like to be one
of the four teams that goes. This is a five
year deal. This is the second year of a five
year deal. There's been a lot made of the empty
seats in the stadium yesterday. Look, I'd prefer to focus

(12:30):
on the full ones, if I'm honest. What an experience
for the traveling fans, And maybe that's what this is,
it's an experience for existing fans. Because there's absolutely no
way in the world rugby league will gain a footprints
of any size in the United States. Rugby union's been

(12:50):
trying for a long time. Remember the United States rugby
team came to the nineteen eighty seven Rugby World Cup.
That's nearly four decades ago. And while they do have
Major League Rugby, yes that's there, a professional comp no
one goes to watch it. Cricket's the same over there.
The NRL must know they are never going to threaten
the traditional American sports baseball, NFL, ice hockey. Just like

(13:13):
those sports won't ever really get any real traction back
here because they're not generational. Rugby, rugby, league, cricket, netbel
those are our sports. I see Peter Peter Valandi's is
already talking about reducing the number of games they play
there on the day in the next three years. They'll
go back for the next three years, that's their contract.
But four games yesterday two NRL games, a Super League

(13:36):
match and a women's Test match. The venue was actually
at its fullest for the Warriors game, but the numbers
steadily decline from there, and Peter Valandis has already said, yeah,
we're looking at three games next year because of the
length of the day and fans leaving after their team
has played. And that's probably fair enough. Oh, eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty if your Cameron, George, are you

(13:58):
getting back here and look put the result to one
side as an experiment, as an experience and as a
pro file building exercise. Was it worth it for the Warriors?
Is it worth it for the NRL? I eight hundred
eighty ten eighty is a number or what you saw
on the field and what you would be trying hardest

(14:19):
to fix if you were Andrew Webster. I eight hundred
eighty ten eighty, Hello Paul.

Speaker 6 (14:27):
Then finally, I think there's a misunderstanding with a quickly
what you mentioned about the reason going to the state
that's it's not abutlet's takeover and win. The Hearts of
Americans exercises very much about you know, the gambling, the
you know, the beating market and byballs on TV. You

(14:50):
been on the mains Fox channel which was over the weekend.
So if they can capture a bit of that betting market,
that's extra revenue. So that's that's it's not about that
they're no longer ever take over America. Like you said,
just on the game, Piny, just the few concerning things.
It is easy to get carried away with one game

(15:11):
and then they didn't fire a shot. I tend to
think I agree with your comments around being spit star
struck with the bright lights. They you know, Ricky Stewart
prepared that camera team incredibly well. They just came out
of the blocks. You could just tell they were focused.
They had a game plan and they stuck to it,
you know, the off loads and we just seen like
we just never never really were in the game, you know.

(15:35):
I mean, if you look at the Panthers, they are
absolutely incredible. You know, they didn't even have a pre
season game. They had a post session against each other,
no preseason game. The guys come back from surgery and
you look at their play, the speed of their back line,
the speed of their play. You know, they're just an
incredible team. And for us to have well off the preseason,

(15:56):
all the preparations over entered this set up was just
absolutely diabolical. Mate.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Yeah, Paul, I always enjoy your calls because I know
you're you're a a deep thinker about the game. You
watch a lot of Warriors. So I want to ask
you about a couple of players. I've seen a bit
of a bit of negative comment about James Fisher Harris.
We know what a brilliant player he is and has been.
It's only one game again, but what did you make
of his performance yesterday?

Speaker 6 (16:25):
Well, you know, I think people base it on the penis.
You know when he was at Penriis, you don't remember
that him and Moses the Ota were the reason why
clearly had time and space. Because of that goes forward
to quick play the balls. I was disappointed Fisher howrise
didn't have long minutes. You know, he didn't really have
long minutes, and I don't think he used the bench

(16:46):
that well. But Fisher Horse was the reason why clearly,
clearly there were games we've seen in the past where
Fisher House or the other are injured or they don't
have a good game and clearly doesn't shine. So you
know that doesn't wash with me. It wasn't him. We've
got a very inexperienced number seven and caff and it

(17:08):
does take quite a long time for a seven to really,
you know, to really learned how to manage and conduct
the game. And he's very very green. I don't agree
with Chanell Harris Savida at number six. I think he
should be on the bench at of utility. He can
cover multiple positions. I'd like to see to mighty Martin
come back at six at head past two and if

(17:30):
it doesn't work, we've still got ten of boys to
come in. But we can't drop and change. We can't
throw the baby at the basketball at the moment. You
know that we do only have time sort to sort
of do that. But I'm very, very disappointed in that performance.
But there's only one game, mate, Paul.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Great points well mate, as usual by you, mate. Please
stay in touch, as I say, love chatting rugby league
with you, and I'm sure we'll do it again across
the season. At eight hundred and eighty ten, eighty.

Speaker 7 (17:54):
Hello Kevin, Oh good, Evan Jason, how are you?

Speaker 2 (17:59):
I'm good, Kevin? What do you make of taking the
NRL to Vegas? Are you a fan?

Speaker 7 (18:06):
The second year? Second year got me, But the first
time was that please explain now? Of course, I wasn't
too much into the Warriors game. I was more interested
in the Super the actual Super League game, the Women's
Test match and the Pants and the Panther's Sharks game.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Yes, and what did you make of those?

Speaker 7 (18:30):
And I was watching because I had what Fox leagues coverage,
So basically I was looking at the Wigan and Warrington,
the one that they showed us up, and I wasn't
And I was not at all pleased with Sky not
showing not only the Women's Test match, which I was
keen for, and also the Super League game. Yes, really,
I was really. I was really dead pan, flat out,

(18:53):
flat out and flat out embarrassed. That's the That's the
most radio friendly version of what I really think of Sky.

Speaker 8 (19:01):
Kevin.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
I'm not sure what the situation is around those two games.
There may not have been rights for them. I know
the Sky have the NRL rights, therefore they can show
the NRL games. I'm not sure that they had the
rights to the other games, so I don't think we
should jump to conclusions too quickly there, mate, Thanks for
your call, THO, Saint Jay, how are you fixing the Warriors?
It's only one game, mate, we shouldn't panic. But what
are you focusing on if you look and try and

(19:22):
fix what happened yesterday?

Speaker 8 (19:25):
I don't know what went wrong yesterday, but I knew
we were going to lose because of Harris, says Tavida.
That guy is not worth it, and tomorrow Martin or
his friend has to get up and tell the coach
we don't need them. That's why we got a stream
for half backs. Has come all the way here to
make this team look very well. How long they have
been playing number six and number seven? Last year we
missed out because of them because of the field goals.

(19:47):
They can't kick a field goal and they get paid
two hundred to three hundred thousand dollars. Yea, we spent
our money to go all the way to watch them,
and I feel sorry for the fans who went all
the way there to watch Charrace Tvida. First minute, Harris
Tevida had a chance to offerad the ball. He was
to score the third by himself. A heart doesn't work like.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
That, Okay, Sanjay, Right, we're getting a little bit hot
under the all over there by the sounds of I
think you've made your point though, thanks for calling in Bill.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
Hello, Yeah, we haven't got the Rochester Civil League mate,
which pisses me off. But anyway, back to the Warriors,
there were the last in mate, so is Clox did
he needs to go back to the reserves for a week,
but he won't. We had two of our best fully
explaining on the wings because we've the because the Aussie,

(20:34):
because the coach won't the Assie coach won't go out
of his squad and put faith in New Zealand players
who were bigger, stronger and faster than the two wingers
we had on the yesterday. So when Roger went to
play for the All Blacks, he well, when he tried
to play for the All Blacks, he found out that
our young players are pretty good.

Speaker 2 (20:58):
Bill, just I'm just trying to unpick this. I actually
thought Roger to Vasisik was our best player yesterday playing
all that he should have been.

Speaker 5 (21:04):
He should have been at you should have been on
the he should have been playing fullback, mate, because we
had a fullback that lost his He lost it, Mate.
He got hit hard in the first half and then
he didn't want to take the ball anymore. So he
should have been off the field, but we were Roger
too Brush and check was actually taking most of the
high balls in the second half. I don't know if

(21:24):
you notice that. So we we've got two playmakers that
aren't that aren't doing the Mate. So Tavida Harris the
only one of the few chances we got in the
first half to be in there without a mistake. We
got the fifth tackle in the red zone and he
ran the ball into them because and we had there

(21:45):
was the only chance in the first half. We had
to roll the ball in and get a repeat six.
But we don't do that. We've got a coach that
likes the old up and under, the old kicking hope
on the fifth mate, and it doesn't work. So he
had metcalf kicking the ball on the fifth but he
wasn't trying to put pressure on on the player catching
the ball. Unlike Canberra, who weren't worried about making yards,

(22:07):
they were worried about putting pressure on the catcher and
getting hit at the same time as you got the ball,
so he had won. So we had a half pack.
Who they get, they get, they get in the situation made.
I've played legal all my life and I'm and I've
always played with a standoff. Who could roll the ball
in and get a six? I said, a six? But

(22:28):
we don't have that. We should have bought, We should
have brought. We should have bought a Tom Brady, mate,
spent all our money on Tom Brady and Stead. It's
been you know, Fisher Harris had a hard game the
week before the intensity of the Moldi of the Moldi
game was ten times higher than the intensity of the
first Warrior game of the season. Now, I've got to

(22:48):
blame the coach. I might be a bit biased because
I know too Harris's family. But when he came out
and said that Toy he didn't know anything about Toy
Harris's wrist injury. What kind of coach are you? You
must have known about the rist injury the whole year.
So now he's saying he's he's very disappointed. You they
what's the news conference? But that's not good enough, mate.

(23:10):
You've got to trust their Kiwi players we've got strong
first Kiwi wingers. One of those wingers should have played fullback.
But anyway, Constant is going to have another game next week. Right,
He lost his confidence and then he started to roll
back and catch the wall. Instead of going up and
near to get the ball, he rolled back and tried
to catch the wall line on the ground and they

(23:30):
scored a try. So after their performance, he should have
gone off the field.

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Yeah, Bill, I can tell again, very passionate, very passionate
comments from you, and I appreciate you taking the time
to call. I think he'll stick with Roger t Vasa
Chek on the wing. He seems to be all in
on that. I think Chance nicol klicks are. Like you say,
Bill will probably play full back again. In fact, I
wouldn't be at all surprised if he doesn't make any

(23:55):
changes for the next game, because it's one game. You
can't throw the baby out with the bath water. It's
a bad performance, it's subpar in many areas. I'll look
at it and I'll say there's not a lot really
to be positive about here. But you have to move on.

(24:16):
It's round one, and so there are two ways you
can do it. When your team doesn't perform the way
you hope they would, you can either make wholesale changes
or make some changes, or you can say, you know what, guys,
go back out there and make it right. I look
at that team and I think I would say he
will probably go with the same team. He'll stick with

(24:38):
Janelle Harris, Tavita and Luke Metcalf and the halfs Roger
will stay on the wing, Charms will stay at fullback.
I think, you know, the four pack will be largely unchanged.
And what he'll hope and what I think will probably happen,
is that he will get a response and there'll be
a heck of a lot better next time than they
were yesterday. A couple of techs through Arm Nathan says

(25:01):
the Worriors looked underdone, unfit, uncompetitive. I'd rather be a
feeni fans settled down, Nathan. This one says, Finally, I
know there are lots of Warriors fans out there, but
I watched the game yesterday. Terrible display in a half
full stadium. Yet everyone in the media banging on about
what a success it was. With three hundred Warriors fans
traveling on a charter flight to watch. Yeah, I think

(25:23):
there were a few more than three hundred there. Everyone
I talked to yesterday on the show maybe they were
just you know, they were they were having you know, hyperbole.
Maybe it was a bit hyperbolic, if that's the right word.
But everybody who I spoke to on the show yesterday
and the leadout to the game said all you saw
was was Warriors jerseys and that the Warriors fans were

(25:44):
outnumbering the rest significantly. And if you take it just
as an experience, and I know not everybody can afford it.
I know that, I know not everybody can can make it,
but what an experience for those fans. Email here from
Leon Piney listening to you chatting with Mike this morning
in regards to the Vegas NRL evans the fact the

(26:07):
NRAL couldn't sell out the stadium. I believe there were
just over forty thousand. Their shows that the average American
sports fan is just not interested. Listening to ESPN and
Fox Sports Radio Networks not a single mention of the games.
I know for a fact. The Melbourne Storm says, Leon
have been invited both years, but I've turned down the invitations.
The NRL should instead focus on expanding the game in

(26:28):
this part of the world for long term growth. The
Vegas event just comes across as a novelty and won't
succeed in breaking the market there again yet thanks to
going for your emails always. I don't think the NRL
have any illusions that they will break into the American
market really, And if they do have those intentions, then

(26:52):
I kind of feel like they have to look around
at other other examples of sports that have tried the
same thing. American sport will always be dominated by the
big American sports baseball or anyf el's the biggest Baseball, basketball,
ice hockey, those four, they are the main ones, and

(27:12):
getting a foothold in there is so difficult, so so difficult.
Final text before we go to the break. One day
you'll be saying, basketball, rugby, netball, and league are our
main sports. Basketball is the most popular sport at schools
at the moment, is it not?

Speaker 9 (27:28):
Yet?

Speaker 2 (27:28):
You'll notice that I left out basketball when I talked
about the sports that won't get a foothold here. Basketball
is one that has but that is globally popular. And
you might say, yes, so is baseball, so is ice
hockey to a degree, But basketball is truly globally popular
and you're right, it is becoming a juggernaut here. We've

(27:49):
talked about it a lot on the show. Twenty five
to eight TALKSB back in a moment, I think it's
my turn to speak. Thank you. Twenty three away from eight.
This is Sports Talk on News Talk ZEDB. Northland's Toy
Henderson has won the twenty twenty five Golden Shars Open
Sharing Final in Masterton.

Speaker 10 (28:05):
The winner of the twenty twenty five Bailey's Goldlin Shaars
Open Sharing Championship.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
Toy Yeah, Toy Henderson first to finish sharing his twenty sheep.
He did that in sixteen minutes, fifteen points seven seven
nine seconds to be precise, beating wided Up. I hope
David Buwick by eight seconds. Then his quality was enough
to carry him through to win overall. Toy Henderson is

(28:34):
with us. Congratulations to on being twenty twenty five Golden
Shares Champion. How much does this title mean to you?

Speaker 9 (28:42):
Hey, mate, I'll let you know. This has been the
dreamwine ever since I was a little Hollor. I've made
every Golden Shaar's final from the novice right through to
the seniors and yeah, today. To win the Open means
so much to me because I.

Speaker 2 (28:59):
Know that last year you were the hot favorite, but
it didn't go anywhere near the way you wanted it to.
Twenty four What happened last year?

Speaker 9 (29:07):
First of all, I think I went down to Marcel
and but two tenths mate, Like you know, it's you
know when when you can change them with those fellows,
you know, it's all about you know, if I must
have win there all there for one thing. But this
year I just went down. I was chewing my drink gum,
had to drink the water. And yeah, I just couldn't

(29:31):
give you know, two guys, and yeah, I just done.
Just just got up there and share and what I
do every weekend and just and just sure and got
to win.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Now, tell us about the mix that you need of
speed and quality because you can finish first, But that
doesn't necessarily give you the title, does it. Can you
just explain it for us?

Speaker 1 (29:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (29:53):
Well, on Saturday night it was a big one because
I knew David Bilke, you know, he's he's a dark horse,
you know, same as Leon, Samuel's rolland Smith. But they
went in the final that night, and so David was
sort of the one on one on my mind. And

(30:15):
then yeah, we just got the final, and yeah, I
just made sure. You know, I've got to keep my
quality and try and do what I do best. So
there's time points and then hopefully, you know, all those
fellows that are chasing makes mistakes and I can get
the win.

Speaker 2 (30:34):
Yeah, because they can't take time off, you can they,
but they can take points off for quality. How do
they judge quality? Is it just is it just the
literally the way you share each sheep?

Speaker 9 (30:44):
No, it's so you got the judges on the board,
they look for sticking cuts and you've got the judge
out the back. But yes, there's a big one. They
you know, they did the whole time and I'm just
so grateful, you know, I've got to bring their title
better to KYL.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
Did you feel confident once you'd made the final.

Speaker 9 (31:07):
Yeah, I would say, like, you know, after missing out
last year, there was no way I was going to
miss out again. And and after making that Golden Ches final,
you know, and I was sitting down with all the
boys and I just thought, you know, there's me and
six of them, five of them, and uh, yeah, I'm

(31:30):
just going to do it. And you know, if you
want to beat me, I'm going to put my best
thought forward.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
What were the emotions like once you knew you'd won.

Speaker 9 (31:41):
Oh, you probably have seen a couple of reels, mate,
But I I have.

Speaker 8 (31:45):
I have.

Speaker 9 (31:47):
That's a dream comes true for me, you know, my
my sharing career. That's all I do. Like I've been
up here practicing for years, mate, Like you know, I've
been over it. You know, it's been it's been a
good seven eight years. You know, I've just been training, training, training,
dreaming about Roland Smith, dreaming about you know, Paul Avery,

(32:11):
Johnny Kirkpatrick, David Fagan. And the last week I was
just I was down the mass and all I had
done was I went to the Golden Chairs and I'll
come back home and I was just watching Golden Chess
finals and you know, if I made that final, I
was just trying to expect, you know, what am I
going to do? And and yeah, I made the Golden

(32:35):
Chess final made and I've done it.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
So you know you're based in Kywalker in Northland, So
how far do you have to travel to to compete?
Not just for Golden Chairs, we know that's and wide
it up, but traveling around to other competitions. You must
spend a bit of time on the road.

Speaker 7 (32:52):
Do you.

Speaker 9 (32:53):
Yeah, we spend a bit of time on the RoadMate,
Like it's usually so we call Hamilton Hay so Hamilton's
about three hours from home. So usually from Hamilton back
you know, I'll keep ticker with it. This's better half
from Hamilton and then yeah, so we just our know,

(33:17):
me and my dad we.

Speaker 7 (33:18):
Do ca there.

Speaker 9 (33:18):
I usually one in the morning. This morning, me and
my wife left Pumers in Norfolk to two o'clock this morning.
We went back talking about nine o'clock and here to
fly out. So yeah, it's just it's it's always a mission,
but you know, to to finally, you know, get there,
get their trophy and bring it back to Norfold.

Speaker 7 (33:41):
You know.

Speaker 9 (33:42):
Oh we're all proud of Yeah. I love my family
for it, so.

Speaker 2 (33:46):
You should be. So you shall be very proud. And
next year in Masterton it's the World Sharing Champs. Is
that on your radar?

Speaker 9 (33:54):
Yeah, there's always been on my radar, mate. I always
want to be a Royal Champ. But yes, I finally
last night I got my bed with a with a
silver fun on my chest. So I'll get my blazer
in that and yeah whatever comes after that, you know,
I always be there for our country, and well I

(34:16):
can hope is the best and yeah, let's go awfully.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Let's go indeed. Amazing achievement over the weekend tour. No
one can ever take this away from you, mate, twenty
twenty five Golden Shears champion. Thanks for taking the time
for a chat.

Speaker 9 (34:29):
Yes, mate, thank you.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
Thank you to Toy Henderson. There after winning the Golden
Shears on Saturday night in Marsterton, iconic event, Gavin says, Jason,
thanks for having sharing on the show. But I think
sharers at the top level get the recognition they deserve
as athletes. We've had so many successful sharers over the years,
Thanksgavin here we have indeed, I think David Fagan is

(34:52):
the name that jumps instantly to mine, but many others
as well. And Toy Henderson the latest to win the
Golden Shears in Marsterton sixteen away from ages. Before we've
got to break. Another text comes through here about basketball.
Pinty a lie basketball, But how can it grow beyond
its means? Here? You can play NBL. We might even
get a second team. H that's the AUSSI NBL, we

(35:13):
might even get a second team. Participation doesn't mean global domination.
We're joining the NBA ever, or even qualifying for the
Olympics here. It's a good point you make, and you're right.
Participation doesn't equate to global domination. But maybe that's what
basketball is here. It is a participation sport. Yes, the
cream will always rise to the top, and we've got
the breakers and who knows, maybe another one. We've got

(35:35):
the National Basketball League for both men and women, and
that is growing all the time. But the number of
kids who play it, I'm talking under eighteens, basically anybody
who hasn't left secondary school. The number of kids who
play the game is just astonishing incredible. But does that

(35:57):
mean it will equate to success on the global stage,
qualifying for the Olympics that sort of thing. Well, I
feel like we've got a better chance than we did.
And a look at some of the young men and
women coming through who are picking up scholarships and who
are playing at a very high level, and what are
under seventeens, under eighteens, under twenties have done in recent times?
I think, you know what, maybe maybe there will be

(36:18):
a time where we start to compete more and make
Olympic games again and make a name for ourselves. Fourteen
away from eight. Let's take a break when we come back.
It's Pinety's Power rankings for the weekend.

Speaker 1 (36:35):
Ladies Our Rankings.

Speaker 2 (36:39):
Monday Nights Our Staple feature Piney's Power Rankings as we
rate the best, the worst and the end between bits,
well some of them anyway. From the Sporting weekend, Let's
go gen the Warriors. They just never fired a shot
in Vegas. Today.

Speaker 3 (36:54):
The Camera Raiders triumph in Vegas. They have come here
with a mission and they have run over the Warriors.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
Well, thankfully, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. There's
only one way to go from here.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
Nine.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
The Wellington Phoenix men's sight a third loss in succession.
Their road to the playoffs is now a very very
tricky one.

Speaker 5 (37:20):
That is that.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
On Friday Night in Wellington, Marco Tello, who cannot stop
scoring against Wellington Phoenix, has done it again. One of
the lost to Melbourne City on Friday nights eat Matt Henry.

Speaker 7 (37:35):
Up in the air.

Speaker 9 (37:40):
And taken in the dead.

Speaker 2 (37:41):
Five wickets for Matt Hendry. Yea the one bright spot
of the black Caps performance overnight against India, a five
wicked bag all in vain on to South Africa Wednesday
night in the Semis seven that a league Auckland FC
Adelaide United Classic at go Media on Saturday. Elliotts shut
up still there, shut.

Speaker 7 (38:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
I couldn't get all the goals and there were eight
of them of four all draw are quite thrilling. A
league contest six the Chiefs and Super Rugby three from three.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
Sitting on the rep right, he's only a brown.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
They dropped the pool and the Sea discovered one.

Speaker 4 (38:24):
Rotten the end.

Speaker 3 (38:25):
Jacob puts it over the middle to make it forty
nine points to thirty four.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Can anyone deny? They are Super Rugby favorites in twenty
twenty five. Five into the top half we got Scott
Dixon and the Indy cars. Hope Dixon, he is trying
to line something up here. This isn't over for a
second so long. Here he comes up and on the
inside of Joseph Newgarden.

Speaker 5 (38:46):
That's p two.

Speaker 2 (38:47):
But the sixth time champion of great move from Scott
Dixon to take the second place and impressive second place,
especially given he had no comms with his team.

Speaker 9 (38:56):
I think they were trying to call me in because
in that last up we had before we petted there,
it was just so much traffic and we lost two
or three seconds and that's where you know the ten
car got us, so definitely frustrating.

Speaker 2 (39:05):
I think we had the speed. We have a great car.
Four Mike Phillips. A record breaking performance at the topaw
Ironman three in a row for Mike Phillips and top
three Ryan Peak. What a story. The New Zealand Golf

(39:30):
Open champion and a chance to win a life changing
tournament here at the New Zealand Open.

Speaker 5 (39:39):
Peaks last story here at Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
What a story. Indeed, he used to be in a
biky gang, had five years in prison. Now he's won
the New Zealand Open and he's off to the Open Championship.
Two OW Women's Blacksticks taking the Nation's Cup title in Chile.
New Zealand are.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
Champions of the FIH Hockey Nations Cup.

Speaker 2 (40:04):
Is this the start of and upward trajectory perhaps for
our women's Black Sticks? But there can be, as per usual,
only one number one, and it is Dame Lydia Coe.
A continuation of her utterly superb recent form. At the
Women's World Golf Championship in Singapore.

Speaker 5 (40:25):
It's a master cass from Lydia Coe, the champion at
the HSBC Women's World Championship.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
Crazy thing about Dame Lydia is that she was, from
all reports, going to give it away or was contemplating
her future after the Olympics last year. Wasn't she or
going into the Olympics? Win's gold? When's the British Open,
goes into the Hall of Fame, when's the Hellberg Supreme Award,
when's the World Championship?

Speaker 7 (40:50):
There?

Speaker 2 (40:51):
I just carry on, Andy.

Speaker 10 (40:52):
If I was here, Well, do you think if she
did retire, she'd just join a biker gang and do
the reverse Ryan peak on that one?

Speaker 4 (40:59):
Avy?

Speaker 2 (41:00):
I really can't see Lydia Coe in a sort of
a Sons of Anarchy type situation, can you.

Speaker 10 (41:05):
She'll be a trail blazer, She'll break the mold. But
I'd keep playing golf as far as here.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
Yes, so would I so would. I can see her
doing that more more often than doing whatever biky gangs
to ride their bikes. I guess those are Pioneers Power
rankings for tonight and for the weekend. They're back again
next Monday evening six to eight, and that is us
on Sports Talk for tonight. Thanks for tuning in, Thanks

(41:32):

get all of your calls and emails and texts on
the air, but we do appreciate you interacting with us.

couple of days off, mate, I will too. We're back

(41:53):
radio after eight to help you through the rest of
your Monday evening as a safe Thanks for tuning in.

just just have a good one. I think it's what
I'm trying to say, and I hope you do. Liye
