Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Sport. Seven minutes after seven. This is sports Stalk on
News Talk ZEDB. Good evening. My name's Darcy walder Grave.
Still bouncing after last night and this morning's outstanding victory
over South Africa. The black Caps do it again over
the Proteus and to celebrate that, we're going to take
(00:53):
your calls, questions, fear around that you want to leave
Gary Stead alone. Now, we had a bit of a
wobble at the T twenty World Cut. The lame as
a wobble. A guy's been in charge of wow when
it comes to his zellen Crock over the last handful
of years. But we'll talk about that. We'll talk about
the game coming up on the program, Ravishing Wreck. Rutchen
(01:17):
Ravindra joins us on the show, fresh after a stunning century,
a wonderful partnership with one of his idols in Cain Williamson.
We'll talk about the whole game, the whole team, what
they did, and what happens next now that they are
on their way to take on India in the final
(01:38):
of the Champions Trophy. Will it be Twepty twenty all
over again that we will see. Toward the end of
the show. We'll catch up with a gold medal sevens
player for the Black Ferns who went on to play
a bit of rugby league for Newcastle then decided to
give up sevens and come back and play a bit
of fifteens with Chiefs money while they're playing tomorrow. Tanika
(02:01):
Willison joins us on the show toward the end to
talk about that. But before all of that, what about
lots of sort today? For the Hurricanes, rock starter Perlo
Sardi Savia is tapping into his Rich Caines history to
provide some punch for this Saturday's Super Rugby Pacific showdown.
(02:24):
The Majana Pacifika captain explains his channeled in a drive.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
As afte to be trying and to use anything everything
to build the knot in your gut to build their
energy to go out there and want to play well
and can's being a past team, you know, that's something
that I want to go up there on Saturday and
try and perform to the best.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Be afraid it'd be very afraid. I all turned to
sewage last year for the Brisbane Broncos right, The former
darlings of the NRL waded through their own excrement in
twenty twenty four the undernew coach, former Kiwi task master
Michael McGuire. The expectations are huge after the last seasons
superstar laden twelfth place Dumpster Fire captain Adam Reynolds isn't
(03:08):
buying into the hype slash hope ahead of their opening
fixture tonight. This is the Roosters. We haven't done anything
that heartatheticals are all good. You know, you listening to
people and the outside, you end up on the outside.
So we know we've had a good preseason. We worked
hard on it and we just have to keep.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
A let on it.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Football fans Veta and then Alongo knows she has a
target on her strip ahead of the twenty twenty seven
World Cup. She could appear in the tournament for a
barely believable sixth time, but she's fully encouraging the next
gen to step on her player should be banging on
my door and taking my shirt, and that's what we want.
So I'm realistic and where I am, and my job
(03:47):
is to make sure that that next generation are ready
and ready to go. Ardie back playing against the Hurricanes
and crusaded. James O'Connor is up against his old bunch,
the Reids this weekend. Playb for five years. Finished last season,
he reckons he can still pick up the odd call
from his old team.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
It's not that easy to change your whole language, I'll
put it that way. But I'm sure like they're a
smart coaching group and players as well. I'm sure they
would have tweaked a lot of things. But again, I'm
coming off the bench, so I think they'll just be
worried about playing their game.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
And that's ten pars seven. Let's get into a bit
of cricket, and why would we not celebrate? Who will
we celebrate? Worth Well? Quite frankly the star of the game,
although there were plenty of them, It was a genuine
team effort last night, as the proteust just didn't have
enough in the barrel to deal with what the black
(04:40):
Caps released. We join now by a man that scored
has fifth ton and white ball I see see tournaments
managed to roll his arm over to great effect as well.
His name is a Ruction Revenger. He joins us now,
Good evening, Russian.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
Hey, good morning, Darcy, how are you?
Speaker 2 (04:59):
While I'm really quite happy, but not as happy as
you and the team first and foremost, because it is
a team game, flight back and away down to Dubai,
it must have been very satisfying for you all.
Speaker 6 (05:11):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 7 (05:12):
I mean it's always a great feeling being able to
want to knock out a game of cricket and push
off the place in the final. But I think more
was just the emphatic fashion that we did it, and
the complete team performance was extremely pleasing.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
You say complete team performance, I don't think that is
an overstatement at all. Everybody's positions, everybody's roles, they all
applied and it all worked out. Could you even believe
what was happening out there? You're not like scored five
hundred runs, But to a man, everybody performed.
Speaker 6 (05:43):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 7 (05:44):
But I think that's been the theme of the BLACKFS
teams throughout the Champions Trophy entry series.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
You know, the roles are clear on everyone sort of
executing the skills. Well, we know that.
Speaker 7 (05:53):
Sometimes happens, sometimes doesn't, but you know, everyone's clear about
what they're supposed to do and it's worked out reasonbly well,
and that's when the cool part and seeing it all
come together.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Guys worked really well, worked quite hard during the start.
Will young You know, they put together a reasonable partnership
to start, but it probably wasn't as easy as it
looked Iniceially there was some mucky there wasn't there to
get through.
Speaker 7 (06:17):
Yeah, for sure, I think really well at the top
and bother very straight, didn't really give us much to score,
and then once broke the shackles.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
But it's actually Younger. You hit a couple of nice,
nice shots to get us.
Speaker 7 (06:26):
Going, and I followed soon and we're just able to
build a nice partnership going forward.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Your relationship and partnership with Kane Williamson, they talked about
the Master and the Apprentice. Was there a touch of
that about that.
Speaker 7 (06:40):
Or about that It's still a very, very very long
way to be even considering an apprentice that came with episode.
But he's unbelievable to bet with. I really enjoy. I
think we've shared some core partnerships over the last year
and a half, and you know, it's special to be
able to beat with one of my idols and witness
a truly world class player in full flight.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
At the other end, I was talking to former Black
Caps coach John Bracewell today and John said, the difference
in the way you apply yourself when Cane's at the crease,
it's market It's almost like he brings a big calm
around what you're doing and you play beyond your years.
Is that a fair enough statement? Russian?
Speaker 6 (07:19):
Ah, I'm not sure. I haven't really thought too much
about it. Maybe just because he's a coming presidence.
Speaker 7 (07:25):
He brings the serenity to the crease, and maybe it
helps me out to him, and maybe it's a little
bit of I don't want to li him.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
Down because he's the best player of us, so I
want to impress him.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
I guess it's just the way the partnership goes, and
we get well, you know, we get on wile off
the field and be able to relay on the field
in terms of the way we bet. So yeah, I
guess we know each other's games reasily well and able
to help each other out.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Amazing strike rate. You played really really well. Shot making
was exquisite, especially the finding of the gaps. You must
be satisfied with that. It was it was pinpoint, of course,
it was so fast the outfield. All you had to
do was pierce that in a ring She's all over.
Speaker 7 (08:01):
Yeah, I mean the beauty of playing in this part
of the world and these pictures.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
And you know, you don't really need to try to
force anything.
Speaker 7 (08:07):
You get into good positions, hit good cricket shots and
hopefully you can score quickly and at a good clip.
And that's something I pride myself on. How I can
continue doing as my career progresses is hitting good cricket
shots and you know, backing my technique and timing because
like I'm not the biggest guy in the worlds I
can't necessarily muscle it all the time. But you know,
being able to trust that part of my games been important.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
You look filthy when you got out. Understandably, no one
likes to lose in their workout, but you must have thought, oh,
there's an opportunity slip there because I'm so I'm so
in rhythm right now.
Speaker 7 (08:39):
Yeah, sure, I mean there's sort of been a thing
I'm wanting to do is take it a little bit deeper.
I mean, I wouldn't have chose a different shot to players,
see they bounced a little bit more than I thought
in as orders, But I mean I'd love to you know,
you're never satisfied as the bestment, so you'd love to
beat into the forty forty fifth over and see what
you can really do.
Speaker 6 (08:56):
And but to be fair, I can't really complain.
Speaker 7 (08:58):
We've got three hundred and sixty GP and there center
Caine sent it, So I think it really happens for
a reason.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah, I Caine really scraced around a start, but that's
kind of came William said. He really finds his place
and then he goes for it. So when you left
is like, hold my beer, watch this, and he went
to town. But I'm glad you mentioned dazz and what
he did in GP toward Gen because he was sure
to trot was Mitchell, but he knew exactly what he
was doing. He fulfills a role particularly well without too
(09:24):
much fuss, right.
Speaker 7 (09:25):
Rogen, Oh definitely. I think Daryl is mess for our team.
The word his competitiveness and the way he's able to
take the game on and you can just see it
in his eyes that it was pretty stitched on to
this one.
Speaker 6 (09:34):
I mean, who wouldn't be.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
But it's just his intensity and the way he gets
up every game is amazing and it just brings so
much to our group that number four positions vitally and
I think he's almost averaging fifty and one day cricket
a striker out of almost hundred, so.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
He's doing his job brilliantly.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Well do I hate to think, well, you're averaging when
it comes to ICC whiteball tournaments? What that's the fifth ton?
What is it about the big dance that really pushes
you up and beyond? You love that focus? Or is
it just tournament cricket? What is it do you think? Rogen?
Speaker 7 (10:04):
Yeah, I know I have a nice question if you
sorry to be so sorry mate, No, no, no, no,
do not mean in a bad way at all. I mean,
it's more me trying to find an answer that I'm
not sure what it is. I mean, I'm happy it's happening,
but I guess it's just you play the aim in
front of you, and luckily enough I'm able to do
reasonbly well on these stages. And look, I know I'm
(10:26):
very early in my career and there's a long way
to go, so hopefully long may it continue. But I
don't know, there's something I like playing in these games.
It's you know, you're playing for your teammates and you
know there's a common goal in these tournaments, and you
know each step you take takes you closer to that.
And also I think that's what excites me the most.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Word rutting on the captaincy of Mitch Santner. He's a
wily bugger, isn't he. He appears to be able to
pivot very very quickly, understand what the pressures are, what
is needed, and apply that right on the spot, like
when he took you the ball, for example. He knows
what he's up to. He must be wonderful playing under
a guy.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
Like that, Oh for sure.
Speaker 7 (11:01):
I mean I love set not on the field, off
the field. He's such an amazing character, so calm, he's
so chill.
Speaker 6 (11:07):
He's a very funny guy.
Speaker 7 (11:08):
Although he doesn't really se him on the field, but
he's got such a presence about him and the calmness
that you know, exemplifies our group, you know, and it's
it's perfect and it's it's great for us, you know,
and something, you know, whatever he bowl, something happens, right.
He's just such a world class bowler and it's kind
of reflective in its leadership and his captaincy and the
way he's able to make those changes like timely situations,
(11:31):
and it's worked out so well, you know, so far,
and hopefully one more game that can it can keep going.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Well, that's it. And I've been saying this for a
few years. You're stepping up. You first to get to
see me. Finals, don't win them. Quarter Finals don't win them.
See me. If you start one and then you get
to final, that's the next step. You've got to start
winning these things. But the memento behind what this team
has achieved over the last five years, you must be
quietly confident even though it's India, India looking at you,
(11:57):
guys going not those bogey mean again they always blast away.
Speaker 7 (12:01):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's incredible. I mean the way
we've been playing, and you know, the whole thing about news,
the teams always getting into the knockouts and the semis
and stuff. But yeah, I mean, every time you go
and play Tom you want to win it. And I
think that's always going to be there. But I think
if we continue to do what we do, focus on
what's important to us, and hopefully play the credit that
(12:22):
we've been playing, I'm sure we'll be fine and understanding. Like, look, Indi,
you are a very good team on a on a
big stage and on the ground that you never quite
know what the pitch is going to do.
Speaker 6 (12:30):
So we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
And you've got a bit of a rest now before
you take it on board. We've been a travel plenty
of that, but you would have dealt with that quite
easily by now. So what do you have to if
you can? What has to improve between now and the
big final against India personally and from the team point
of view.
Speaker 7 (12:49):
I think a lot a lot of it personally is
getting horizontal and resting our minds, to be honest, basic,
there's it's, it's it's it can not stressful, but it
can be. It's exciting, and there's a lot of things happening,
I guess, So for us it's important to have that
downtime and then come the day before we train what's
important And you know what that challenges facing India looking
like I said, we don't know what the work it's
(13:10):
going to be like. It could be spin friendly like
it was for our group game, it could not be.
So we'll cover all basis and we've got you know,
the death and the squad and the guys are playing
I know that we've got.
Speaker 6 (13:21):
The ability to adapt to what ever surface.
Speaker 7 (13:23):
So I think the name of the game will be
resting up and then switching on when there's a data
go is there anyone broken?
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Because I think that Kane took a wak on the hand.
I think there was a bit of a rollover as
well on the outfield from Matt Henry.
Speaker 7 (13:36):
Everson's okay, yeah, Caine's fine, he's he's all good. And
I think they're just assessing Tisser at the Matt Henry
and he came back in bold, which is positive signs.
So we'll see how it goes on the next couple
of days.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
And finally, I've started calling you ravishing Rick Revendra, which
probably either confuses your drives you crazy. Do you know
who ravishing Rick Rude actually is?
Speaker 7 (14:00):
It was a lot before my time, but I heard
on the bus that it was a WWE dude.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Is that right American professional wrestler from way back in
the day. He's got quite the rig on my line
about the tight pants though. Check out rec Rude, and
please don't be upset if I start calling you like
a few other people are ravishing rec Revendra. Mate, you
go well go hard and carry on playing the way
you're playing. It's a thing of beauty.
Speaker 6 (14:23):
Cheers, Dusty, appreciate it, man, thank you, have a good one.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
And there he is Ruchen Revendra and I'm sorry to
his family, his parents for me calling him ravishing rec.
I just can't help myself. Honestly, their haircuts they're almost identical.
What a player, what a performance. Sitting up last night
watching that entire innings until eventually after the close the end,
(14:48):
it's like, wow, I gotta go to bed. But the
reward was watching Darryl mitch of the way he played,
then Phillip's the way he played ruch In revengdeer it
with an exquisite performance. And came Williamson doing what Cain
Williamson does captaining in the second watch on replay when
I got up from Mitchell Center, this team's hard to fault,
(15:12):
it really is. And who is controlling it? Who's pulling
the strings behind this team? It's Gary Stead and we're
pretty quick to get the trigger finger out when things
didn't go well at the T twenty World Cup last year.
But if you look at what Gary Stead has achieved
bringing this team through, developing this team, the seamless transition
(15:35):
between the old school and the new Cup new school.
This is hard to fault. Gary Stead has become the
coach of the black Caps that have always wanted. I
don't want to see him go, quite frankly, but your
reflections on that game, I don't know if you can
get much better what I reckon Ross. They're in the
(15:55):
best state they can be in to take on this
Indian threat. This is the final of let's say the ages.
But man, it's got a lot about it.
Speaker 8 (16:03):
Hasn't it.
Speaker 9 (16:04):
It's a huge game. I watch any much the second
half of the South African innings because I stayed up
to watch the New Zealand Indian game and I was
a bit naked after that, so I thought, get up
at three o'clock and watch the rest of this, which
I did. But what worries me, and it worries everyone
in this country, I guess, is bowling at the desk
(16:26):
with those three speeds. There's bowling long hops to those
South Africans or that miller and getting crunched everywhere. The
Indians would just pace those boys unless they do something
about it. You know, whether that was a plan just
to bowl them long hops or what the sixers and
the fours that they scored from Miller scored were just awesome.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
He was on fire. Well, I don't know, Ross, what
do you honestly think around that? Because you can look
at it in a couple of ways. One of them,
when the Indians were playing it was a dead rubber
water we get out of it. The second one last night.
By the time they came back on again, the game
was so far gone. I wonder if the intent or
(17:08):
the energy was there with the bowlers to actually do that,
because it didn't matter what Miller did. There was no
way they were going to win from there. That might
be a bit too much of an excuse.
Speaker 9 (17:19):
Though, but he Miller came in at number five, I believe,
and they said right at the end, if they only
had bounces like that when he first came in, he
could have.
Speaker 10 (17:26):
Won that game on his own.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Could have should have water didn't.
Speaker 9 (17:31):
That's the key thing.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
So if you look at that bowling attack, what do
you do there? Because Dylan Cleaver he writes a newsletter
called the Bounce Substack. I think it is former colleague
of mine at New Zeland Herald. Fantastic writer on cricket,
and he wrote today about the advantage maybe that the
Indians might have knowing what they can do with the
(17:53):
extra steepling bounce that I Raw and Jamison provide different
in red ball cricket white ball cricket. It could be there.
Speaker 9 (18:02):
Downfall, they'll just ramp them over the wiki keeper. They
could have ran so many of those balls because they're
just sitting there to be ramped. And there's no defense
against a good ramper.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
There must be. I think that good bowlers don't look
at that and go, there's no defense I need to do.
Do you bowl slightly full or of a length and
bowlt to the off side a lot more? What they
did last night? Yeah, well if you can. But did
you see what they You see what they did last
(18:33):
night though, And what I was really impressed what the
South Africans did is they changed up their pace frequently.
And that is a wonderful trick if you can do it.
It's not the because you get it wrong, you're over
the boundary. So that might be there. And also the
adjustment and the changing of the utilizing the likes of
(18:54):
Revenderer and Phillips and the part timers. So you're constantly
changing what you're doing with the point of attack from
the placement of the spinners, and I think Santa is
capable of doing that.
Speaker 9 (19:05):
I agree with all of that, but they're just the
bowling of the death and those last four overs. We
can't afford to do that. If they if they only
need forty in the last fall overs, i'd say, be
touch and go.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Well, I'll be there watching it. Well, I won't be there,
but be watching it. But I'll tell you what, Ross,
If you're not excited going into this game, the former
team of the last five years up against the runaway
superstars of world cricket. Wow, this has got everything.
Speaker 9 (19:32):
I'm just a bit cautious, and I'm just a bit
cautious that I'm positively cautious and do that.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
I think you should next. You're right as the fan base,
I'd love your calls on this, Ross, Thanks very much
for your contribution. O. Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
loving the unsang hero of this site and it is
Gary Stead. You think about who Gary Stead's worked into
this team, about the players that have been lost, I'm
(20:01):
here and talk them about Bolton South anymore, and it
might as Ross point it out come to pass that
it is a weakness. But the fusion of this team,
the young and the old, the experience, the inexperienced, and
the new Campton who's casting a spell over it. They're
(20:22):
irresistible right now. Gary Stead's a huge part of that.
If you stayed up and watched it, good on you.
Let me know. If you saw the highlights, good on you,
let me know. And if you don't want to talk
about Gary Stead, Rassia Revenger, how good is this guy
going to be? Like he told us before, because I
don't think I'm even close to being an apprentice to
(20:42):
that master. Oh, I think you are, my friend. You've
got the biggest future and we're looking forward to it.
Twenty seven minutes after seven, Let's celebrate the black Cats.
I know it's only a semi final, but hey, it
is what it is. Let's celebrate here on News Talks.
(21:02):
They are in my life.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
You hear it from the biggest names and sports and
then have your say one hundred eighty ten eighty Sports
Talk or on your home of Sports News Talk ZV.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
Seven thirty stills The b Thursday March six, twenty twenty

I'll tell you what I'm into you right now. I'm
sitting there going not bees guys again, and I would
(21:45):
say the ghosts of the three Test series defeat. It's
still there. It's still lurking amongst them. Different format, different venue,
but this is in their head now World Test Championship,
a number of other places. This is gonna be something else. Right,
let's go to the phones. Gooday, Conrad, how are you?
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (22:07):
Yes, I was going to mention that too, that we've
played each other quite a bit recently. I think the
other key aspect of this is that they had that
tri series, so they've got used to their conditions both
in Pakistan and do By coming up into the tournament.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
The New Zealand Cricket for not giving them a decent
preparation moving into a tournament this time, they gave them
more than enough and it's worked.
Speaker 11 (22:31):
Yeah, that's right, that's great. I mean that showed. I
mean I actually think we'll win this. I think it's
like sixty forty in out in our favor because basically
our batting is really hitting, you know, hitting their stretch
really well at just the right time. We got Williamson
back in the side. And my only concern is got
that Previcord just just the Jamison and O'Rourke, if they
(22:54):
could just change their lines of slightly diffraction and they're
still time to alter it a little bit. And also
in that game against India a couple of days ago
that I think we deliberately threw so that we didn't
have to play Australia.
Speaker 8 (23:07):
Conrad, I know that's.
Speaker 11 (23:11):
Naughty when you took degree the max fixing, but I
just think that avoiding Australia we don't have the psychological
issues that we have, we can beat in the other
side on the planet easily. So yeah, I'm backing us
to win. And I think we'll learn our listens from
that sinner as well. We had practice against them. The
Indian spin I think is Varin in the in the
previous game. So so yeah, so yeah, all all credits
(23:34):
to Sentner and feed as well, thank you.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Yeah, and you saw what Verin did against Australia. Wasn't
was Travis Head who didn't even have a look at
him and tried to bash him out of the park
and got caught in the deep. So let's not do that. Conrad,
thanks very much for your call, your thoughts. You want
to make like Conray, please do eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty lines are open. Where's your confidence at? It's
got to be all time, doesn't it, Jamie?
Speaker 4 (23:58):
Oh, exactly me. And yeah, always good to beat the
surfers for cricket or rugby. I mean, apologize to the
South African listeners there, but but you know, it's always
always good to get one over them. But yeah, Gary Stead,
yeah it must have been. I'd probably been one of his. Yeah,
probably have to eat a bit of humble pie. I mean,
(24:19):
i'd probably be one of those who have said the
probably should be replaced, like about even just a few
months ago. But but you know, his record is his
record over was very good. And you know, especially if
they win it, they can go on.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
If he wins, all the team wins this time around,
that's that's the cherry more than and I know his
contracts up. He might go, you know what, I can't
do anything more. I'm walking. We might go.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
I love this.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
I'm not going to stop and what he's won. It's
not him and I think that's what we like about
Gary Stead. It's not about him, it's about as players,
it's about the team. He just sits in the background,
quietly going about his business. But thanks for bringing up
and dining on humble pie, mate, We all love that.
I think I a bit of a crate and gone,
(25:07):
hame mate. Do you think maybe your time's over? But
every time.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
Hoping that are you there?
Speaker 2 (25:15):
Yeah, I'm here.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Oh yeah, you're just hoping that Matt Henry's shoulders and
shoulder thing isn't too serious. I mean, because I think
he's kind of vital for us to take some take
some wickets at the top, and because you know, I mean,
you saw the other bottlers last night getting Canada around
the book, which isn't it wasn't It wasn't great but
yet but you know, but obviously we had the game
(25:38):
in the bay. But still, yeah, I think met Henry
is quite important.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Quite important.
Speaker 11 (25:42):
You know.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
The beauty of Henry and the beauty of Matt Henry
is that he sat and he played sick and fiddle
behind Bolt and Salthy for how long. Finally he got
his chance to come out from under the crowds. Look
at what he's doing now, Yeah, I fantastic. What about that?
Good on you, Jamie. Thanks for your call mate. One
eighty ten eighty lines are open twenty five at minutes
(26:05):
to eight. Tanika Wilson, former rugby league player, former gold
winning met gold medal winning sevens player for the Black Ferns,
now playing for She's Mine. What she joins us before
the end of the program. Back to the phones we go,
Dave Good evening.
Speaker 8 (26:23):
Look, I think we've learned from mistake, even though there's
nothing wrong on that game with the other night, and
we won't take a backward step against India. And we've
got plenty of pretty of experience in the bowling and
then we've got pretty of fire pound about it and
the two fast bowlers and well three of them pretty good.
(26:44):
We want to let the Indians get away with like
the last time. You know, we'll they'll learned from you know,
the even though the heats got them last time. I think, well,
I think I had a good chance to beat India.
They all beat them. This time. They're not going to
be frightened.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Them and what doesn't they ever are? But that are
the Indians frightened of us. I mean, look at Verrek Coley.
He's in superb format the moment, but when it comes
to these big pressure games, who carries the weight of
expectation on sturdier shoulders.
Speaker 8 (27:15):
I think they've got a game plan for them, really
that our bowlers, you know, look at look at Smith
and Henry and Jameson and Glenn Phillips and and Mitch
Mitchell Fandler, you know, you know, the middle India one lab.
But at this time I think I know what what
to expect against India and they'll they won't get get
(27:38):
away with it this time against the black Cats, and
we've got plenty of fire and I think we do. Yeah,
and look at them. Kane Williamson is batting well, you
know he's he's in.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
He's Kane Williamson. Of course he's betting well, he doesn't
know how to bet in the other way. And thanks
for you call the interesting around Kine that he didn't
look great to start with, the commentoes like, oh he's
looking a bit scratches, like its Kane Williams and does
he looks gratchy and then your blink and he's on
one hundred and run a ball, not the way that
(28:15):
Ratchen doesn't think he's even close to being an apprentice
to the master. That is, came Williamson. I think you
are more of your calls coming up next day one
hundred and eighty ten eighty miles. Thanks for this calm down, Darcy.
We haven't wont anything yet.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
You know.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
I don't do calm very well. I'm celebrating what I
watched last night. I'm celebrating everything so far and I'm
going to carry on doing it. And if we lose,
we lose. But I ain't going to take away the
joy I have right here, right now. There's a newstalk ZEB.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
Love Me, Love Me.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Away from mates, forceful care and Newstalk ZB and Darcy Waterberg,
thanks for joining us as we go whoo about the
black Caps and why wouldn't we said if you want
to send out of Chess Manoa to join us toward
the end of the program as you look at super Picky.
But let's carry on with the cricket. Aaron, how are
you good?
Speaker 10 (29:17):
Dancy? And you how do you think? Xcited? I know
you're tired. This is your sleep deprivation kicking in like
the rest of this that loves cricket.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
That just happened to me. I got eighty HD. I
just get really excited at the job. Well maybe it
didn't sleep deprivation.
Speaker 10 (29:35):
All right. The two flies on the world dank. Which
one's going to get into the top of this? Oh
the black one already? Yeah? Yeah. Now do you remember
the last time I rang you about cricket. You probably
won't get a million calls a year, so I'll remind you.
It was during the champions Trophy, you know, for the
five Day cricket, and we were when we won it,
(29:59):
and I rung you like three times that week.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
Oh, the World Test Championship, the World Test Championship.
Speaker 10 (30:05):
Your world tis champion, and look confused, like I said,
sleep deservation, And I said, we've got this, We've got this,
We've got this. And then we took it, and took
it quite easily in the end. And tomorrow and Sunday night,
I think is going to be the same because cricket
has this thing. I find that and it's unlike other sport.
(30:26):
Well some sports are like it. But you've got your form,
which most of them have all got at the moment.
But you get in the zone and there's this zone
that the whole team's in and that they showed last night,
and when that happens is when magic happens in sport.
And some of the greatest memories we ever have in
sport is when a group of people just get in
a zone. And I think that's what's happening at the moment.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
And you could be very right, Aaron, And what I
like about this group of players that it's not reliant
on one or two or even three players to do
it well. As Rutch and talked about before. Every body's
got a role and someone might fall over, but there's
someone else there. So you're getting six, seven, eight guys
performing you do that. It's a team game of individual performances.
(31:13):
It's very hard to beat, right.
Speaker 10 (31:16):
Yeah. And throughout this tournament we've seen who the six
or seven that stand up in each game has changed
and rotated round, which is even more impressive, rather than
sitting on one player where you're going, oh boy, they've
been performed tonight and then they go out for four
or two or something and then you're like, oh, game's over.
That's just not happening at the moment. And that's why
(31:36):
I'm incredibly proud of this team and where they're at
and looking forward to Sunday night.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Carry on me the sleep deprivation, Aaron, thanks very much
for your time. It is sixteen minutes to eight. Shortly,
Tanika Wiilson joins. Just run through a couple of quick
texts for you. Hi, Darcy. The Revenger interview was good.
He's so easy to talk to. I don't think he
realizes how valuabilit he is to the team. And his
(32:02):
bowling isn't bad either. What we did realize how valuabilit
he was. I don't think it tell you anyways. Humble dude,
you know. And he's got a great attitude around that.
Three hundred and forty five Bruce gets going big. That's
Tom Bruce. Surely he gets running the home series for
Central Districts. He scored the third highest first class scorer
ever today. Fantastic, Darcy. I don't disagree with you about
(32:24):
Gary Steed. He has had good results with some of
our best ever players. He's had some bad dips as well,
but like, hey, yeah, generally he's been fantastic and on that.
Let's about out, listen to some salient's advice and move on.
(32:46):
To super rugby. Oh, Picky, we're talking chicks mana next
here and he's talking.
Speaker 12 (32:54):
I'm asking Jill Cousin.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
Twelve minutes to eight comparable Marcus lush up after eight o'clock,
bringing you Marcus last night's right the way through until midnight.
Here's calls his ideas, his curious and distinct way of
chatting about the way the world turns of eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty. That's my number here and that's
his number as well. Right now they were going to
(33:25):
talk a bit of super rugby, Opicky, are we going
to go to the chess Manoa camp who got steamrolled
by Matha Thu last weekend up against the Blues coming
up tomorrow? And we are joined now by its Niko
Willison as we look at that, and good evening to you,
I trust you well.
Speaker 12 (33:43):
Shout out yes, Sam, thank you, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Great to hear You've got a game coming up tomorrow
which I find a little strange. Why a Friday game?
What happened there? What happened to weekend rugby? Tanika for
chess Manoha.
Speaker 12 (33:56):
I'm not so sure, but I quite like the Friday night,
Friday night games Friday night, put it in then actually
have the whole weekend. I guess recover in all that
kind of that good stuff. But no, not as sure.
But yeah, I quite like it.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
You get told me to play, you just turn up
and play, right.
Speaker 12 (34:12):
Yeah, exactly, we got the easy job.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Makes no you haven't. It makes it nice and simple though,
So you're not carrying any of the damage from the
matter two defeat last week because it's the first time up.
Speaker 12 (34:25):
Yeah, well yeah, first game. But I guess, as cliche
as it sounds, we are one team, so together we
I guess we take that loss, but we take the
learnings out of it and fills that played last week
I think have dropped that game onto a new week
with Blues. We can't be dwelling on anything coming up
against a strong Blues side, So no looking forward to
the weekend or tomorrow. Sorry, And yeah, first game back,
(34:50):
pretty exciting and see.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
The old habits die hard. You still think it's the
weekend as well. So I love when athletes say they
pick up lessons from the game, and then I get
to ask some of the obvious questions. So what were they?
What did you group learn out of that defeat?
Speaker 12 (35:03):
Yeah? I think something that we've been focusing on as
around just our roles, something which is something we can
be doing a lot better. But obvious, Yes, there was
a second game of rugby for the season. There's Munaway
and we saw I guess trying to figure out our
combos and all that kind of stuff. But yeah, one
(35:24):
big thing is skill, a skill execution.
Speaker 9 (35:27):
We all know how to.
Speaker 12 (35:28):
Play rugby, so it's considering that and Rishia take care
of itself.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
I suppose when you look at that game last week,
it was it was sitting okay and then Marta II
just pulled out an amsolute banger on the second half.
It was not almost like shell shock the team with
what happened. So all your respect to Marta II for
what they did, but you guys question your defensive structures,
defense of the part that you played in the fact
(35:54):
that they were such an offensive threat.
Speaker 12 (35:58):
Yeah, no, I mean, I guess there's players. There are
times where you are kind of qustioning, you know, like, damn,
what kind of system are we running? As it's going
to work, But that's what the time. We have a
short time, short turn around in a really short season,
so it does kind of get to those points at times,
but at the same time we showed glimpses that it
(36:18):
does work. And I think that we talk a lot
about the trust piece that we need to have stay
within each other, the ones that are playing on the field,
but also the trust that we have and the coaches
that are I guess playing out these these systems, because yeah,
a few look at our coaching stuff. We have got
some pretty different coaches and behind these events and attacking systems.
(36:43):
So I guess it's just for us figuring out how
we want to play it and just trusting it because
it does work. We've showed glimpses of there. I think
that's the biggest thing is, Yeah, I've shown that we
can do it. It's just being able to do it.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Janika Wilson joined us here on news Talk ZB you
linking up with a couple of SEVENS mates. I suppose
Ruby Tooey stands out there. I mean, she's pretty hard
to suppressistency, that lady. But you're journey and I've spoken
about this before around the Wayne athletes within rugby rugby league.
You've got a zigzagged through various versions, haven't you. Sevens.
(37:19):
You picked up a gold medal. You played in what
the Newcastle team? So you played league. You're back playing fifteens.
Now how does that work for you? Havn't I suppose
constantly pivot for a new role.
Speaker 12 (37:32):
Yeah? Yeah. Firstly to be jamming alongside Ruby two again,
it's been a long long time and I think the
last time we played alongside each other was twenty twenty one,
which is in trial matches for the Tokyo Olympics, so
not even on the word stage. And to be it's
quite full circle to come back around to be home
at Chiefs Manoa after the season in twenty twenty three
(37:55):
which he wasn't here. Yeah, running back with her this season,
it's pretty exciting and I'm of course I'm excited to
have made who I played alongside twenty twenty three as well,
so that SEMs. Yeah, really cool to be playing alongside
those two and to find it back with Ruby and
for me just around the switching of codes, I think
(38:15):
I've always been someone to chop and change in between
the team and also just to keep my options open
and not have all my eggs in one basket. So
with sevens you got, I generally found myself finding things
outside of sevens and that was like for a refresher
with sevens it is, you know, because of this full
(38:36):
time and quite so long, you're competing every single day,
and then if you travel away with the team you
might not even play. So things like that kind of
took a tole on me personally, just been in the
sevens for so long. I don't think I played enough rugby.
So where what I did was look outside of that environment,
(38:56):
went and played things for clubs, came back to Oprah key,
I've played touch where if I could as well, and
yeah them lucky enough up here to go to the league.
I played for Newcastle, which was very exciting. I never
played league before and really grateful for them to take
a chance on me, someone who's just gets headless and
know what up to. But people around me help me
(39:20):
a lot and that just makes me me so that
I can go whatever i'm at the time, I go
back to whatever it is, refreshed and video the role.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
I think the transition across codes would be more difficult
if you're playing up front. I'd suggest it probably would be,
wouldn't it. Being like fleet Foot, I suppose it transfers
quite well, doesn't it to Nika.
Speaker 12 (39:44):
Yeah, no, real like lucky to be in the positions
that allows me to transfer those skills. What were They're
quite similar, like you said, so I need to outside back.
Generally you can transfer into anything. Then that's what I
found with the help of the players around me though,
just kind of continuously supporting me, helping me where they could,
(40:07):
and then have.
Speaker 11 (40:09):
Some fun with it.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
All right, tell us a wee bit about what happens
tomorrow night. What do you think you're going to achieve?
What are you going to put down there for the
fine people of Auckland City to take a look at.
Speaker 12 (40:22):
Yep, to the Garden of Eden. I'm pretty pretty cool
place to play it. I would say that pretty cool stadium.
Not as cool as SMG Sadam here and like, but
I think we're going to put on a show for sure.
Obviously we've losed, like I said, are a good side.
I don't think we've even scratched the surface of the
(40:43):
potential that we have in our team. So one thing
that I want to know as my individual role is
to just bring some aggression, and then the second thing
is making sure that I can give to those around
me in terms of in terms of skill, electric execution
(41:04):
and role clarity. Is playing some rugby? Clinical rugby is
what I wanted you're going to see from the chief
man of what tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (41:13):
Is there any revenge lurking around the sheds after what
happened last year when you got rolled in the final
at Eden Park.
Speaker 12 (41:21):
Look, there's three teams in the competition, four teams you know,
and you'll have a bit of Banta and whatnot holding
something against each team, So it's not so much revenge.
I guess it's more like speaking about the potential and
we haven't the inspection service of it yet another chance
for us to just go another level early on in
(41:42):
the season, but also wanting to make our mark and
I guess show that chefs are here to turn up,
turn up and play and then we ain't going to
be any easy team to let anyone run over us.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Looking forward to it, get amongst, enjoy yourself in the
garden of Eden and thanks very much Sneaker Wilson for
your time here on News Talks B most appreciate it.
Speaker 12 (42:08):
Yeah, thank you, thank you for your time. Appreciate you
having me on here today.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
And thanks for yours. Je's mine eye blues Women five
after five tomorrow at the Garden of Eden. You know,
the Indians haven't traveled one single bar in this competition
so far. That's the champions trophy. He's hell to have
traveled over seven thousand kilometers and he had deserved to
get rolled. BCCI. Thanks Ans MILLISEI for producing. I'm Darcy Autograve. Goodbye.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
