The New Zealand women made 137 for two, with returning allrounder Amelia Kerr hitting an unbeaten half century.

But the Aussies cantered to the target in 13 and a half overs, finishing on 138 for two.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks'd be she.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Has a chance hit the winning runs here deserves to.
What's a boundary to bring it up? And we'll get
it with a lovely shot easter way through the off side.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
A sparkling display. New Zeala.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
They will be shell shocked going into the break. They
thought they probably had something to defend and in the
end they were so far short of that.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Australia win it by eight.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Eight wicket victory, comfortable. Joined now by Sophie Devine. She
made a return to playing for the White Ferns in
this game. Soave you good evening, Dancy. How are you
after your first turn back? You took a bit of
a race arrest, a well being rested climb back into
the team and I was fascinated to listen to you
saying you weren't sure if you're ever going to play

(01:01):
at the international level again. Well you have and you're done.
How did that process itself?

Speaker 4 (01:06):
Yeah, look, it was certainly a long process and it's
only been a couple of months, but it was it
got to a point where I needed to step away. Obviously,
well being is so important not just to need but
to everyone, and to get to that point it was
it was necessary. Obviously I never liked missing cricket, and
during that time, being completely honest, I wasn't sure whether
I'd make it back. I think I had to think

(01:27):
what was going to make me happy, and at that time, yeah,
cricket probably wasn't doing that, so it certainly crossed my mind.
But to be able to get to a stage now
we're obviously today be able to pull this shut back
on and go out and rip suit my mates and
my country. You know, I'm really proud of myself for
doing that. But yeah, there's certainly been a fear bit
that has gone on to get me there today.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
So you've played that first game. You see, you were
nervous when you went in, but as it started going,
it's like, AKA, comfortable a pair of shoes. I'm back
on the bike again. I know how this rolled right?

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, yeah it is. I mean the nerves didn't stop
anything like that. I think you've always got expectations on yourself.
It doesn't matter what level you're playing it. I think
you always want to do well, and you know, unfortunately
today we're on the wrong side of the ledger. We were,
you know, we were out of class by a quality side,
but it was nice to get back out. They had
to spend some time and it's probably a bit of
a thing for me this trip is just to go

(02:21):
out there and play with the mates and just enjoy
every moment because you don't know when it's going to end.
So yeah, I think disappointing result. And you know, I'm
the most competitive person going around, so I hate losing,
especially to the bloody Aussies. But you know, sometimes he's
a bigger picture to it as well.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Okay, so let's go back to the start of the game.
You get in and you probably didn't put enough runs down.
Would there be a fair thing to say one hundred
and thirty seven on for a couple?

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Yeah, absolutely, especially when we're only two or three down.
I think, you know, the find reflection me and merely
not that we weren't trying to accelerate the scoring rate,
but we just we just couldn't. Obviously they theyre bowled
pretty well, but yeah, we just didn't have enough runs
on the board. And to be aside, like Australia, you're
going to have to score one sixty one seventy minimum
to put them under the pump a little, so we'll

(03:07):
certainly reflect on that. Obviously, there's not much time to
turn around before the next game in the Mount Long
and NOI on Sunday, but there's there's some real positive
signs there. Obviously the group's going really well. We're shrinkers,
so there'll just being you know, quick fix two conversations
and how can we keep improving as.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
A team one aspect one point that you'd like to
pack up and I said, you just couldn't push on
with it, even though it was a good start and
you had plenty of wickets in hand. Was it the
deck or was it the nature of the Australian bowling
the way they feel. Is there one thing that pushed
you into that quantity you think, Sophie.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Oh, look, I think when people talk about Eating Park,
everyone talks about the short, straight boundaries, But from a
woman's perspective, it's actually not too dissimilar to most other grounds.
When you strike the from the end, it's still a
sixty sixty five meter boundary, which compared to the men,
that is very short, but that's actually about normal for women.
So sometimes you can get I guess infatuated with it
and obsessed with it and sort of forget about the
rest of the ground. And I thought Australia byl Well

(04:06):
bowled into the wicket and made us hit to the
big pockets. You know, merely was was really smart with
how she played at playing your rents and maps and
being able to access what was a short side because
there's only forty five I think meters that way. But yeah,
a lot. I think they bowled well, but you've got
to expect a team to do that. They're not just
going to hander half follies all day. So you know,

(04:27):
that's certainly something for us to learn, is how we
can keep scoring and you know, putting away those suit
of balls.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
So you rolled in, tried to defend what was a
pretty small total, the attitude toward that, the plans you
had in place.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Oh look, we certainly spoke about how well they did
in terms of bowling at heavy length and we just
didn't do that. I think we were pretty timid and
we floated the ball up and they punished us. The
best many was exceptional, but we probably played into their
hands a little bit in terms of allowing them to
hit down the ground which is obviously slightly shorter. So
again we've got to be prepared to take the game
on and be aggressive. And you know, I don't think
we used enough of the short ball on a wicket

(05:01):
where it's big square, So.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
You've only got a couple of days to turn things
around and go. You can't really dig too much into
this game, can you and readdress or can you because
there's such a short turnaround?

Speaker 4 (05:14):
Well no, and that's the nature of a tournament serious
like this. I don't actually think we trained before the
next game, so it is it's going to be about
these conversations and reflections, probably watching a bit of vision
as well in terms of week, and we address those areas.
But yeah, look it is. I think that's what you've
got to be able to do, is to be able
to make those adjustments without heading a ball necessarily. So yeah,
that's on us. I think, you know, we've got fantastic

(05:36):
coaching staff and players that can obviously have those conversations. Well,
so yeah, that's going to be up to us to
how we review and reflect that. We know that one
training session isn't going to change things.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Good to get the gang back together again. A couple
of you athletes coming back and putting on the national
colors and playing in they must have been exciting for
our yourself and merely and Leat, Yeah it is.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
I think that's great. It's obviously been quite nice to
see so many youngsters coming through. I think there was
five debutantes over the last sort of month or so,
so really pleasing signs. But it's always us to be
able to come back with a few of the old heers.
Obviously Leah as well has been out out of action
for a couple of months and merely obviously having been
over in India with the WPL. So look it was,
it was. It was really nice to come back and

(06:18):
to the side. I guess it's just how we can
jell into it because they've been going really well. It's
I guess up to us new bees coming into the
side to be able to you know, fit in and
make the best of it.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
I feel the fear and run with it because they
want your job, you know that. And the more they
want your job and the better you they players, the
betty you're going to play, right, that's going to push
you up right.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Oh absolutely, And I think that's something that we've we've
spoken about at length is wanting to be able to
I guess, you know, have those competitions for places because
we probably haven't had it for the last couple of years.
We'll probably struggled with when you look at the likes
of Australia and England and India and the volume of
players that they've got. So for us to have players
now that it's starting to knock on the door and

(06:57):
you know, challenge spots, it's exactly what you want because
it makes you better, not only individually but us as
a team as well. So it's great. It's awesome Phumuseum
and cricket and there's some really positive signs. But yeah,
we've got to make sure that we keep making ourselves
better and pushing the script forward.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Great to see you bet, Great to see you're playing again.
I can tell you got a smile on your face
right now, get in there and right the wrongs down
at the mountain a couple of days time. Safety Divine,
thanks so much for joining us here on ZB Always
a pleasure, awesome.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Thanks each with it that.
