Speaker 4 (01:48):
The celebrations figures often epsy are a league premious.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, you might have got a little bit of that,
and we can probably play a little bit of it ance,
can we maybe we wait for a bit later in
the show. There you go, George, there you go. Actually
that was the most apt and behind that bit of commentary.
All right, here we go, bring.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Out the pipe cleanlander celebrations figures a a league premiers out.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
I mind it minded for wolf song point. It just
goes with the commentary so well it does, all right,
Thanks George, and I hope that little snippet scratched your
itch tonight. Yeah, what a what a morning for Liverpool fans.
Auckland FC, meantime, have celebrated securing the A League Premier's
Plate with a one nil win over Perth Glory at
go Media Stadium last night. That already claimed the Premier's

(02:42):
Plate the night before on Saturday night. With Melbourne City
not able to be adelaide, that meant that Auckland FC
could not be caught. They knew even before they kicked
off yesterday that they would be claiming and lifting the
Premier's Plate at the conclusion of the game. It was
pretty damp there at go Media last night, but funnily enough,
the rain kind of cleared right at the end and

(03:02):
allowed the plate to be presented and then paraded in
front of the home fans. Head coach Steve Coricker is
with us. Terrific night, Steve last night. How about the
celebrations afterwards, as expected.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
By any you know, an amazing season. Very damp night,
like you said, but the crowd was buzzing so and
so we're the boys and the staff afterwards celebrating. So yeah,
this was a lot of fun. Obviously we went to
the Black Knights Club with all the families and then
after that the players went off and the staff went
off and celebrated separately. And you know, it's good. It's

(03:38):
good to see the boys celebrate what is such a special,
special victory really for us in the premiership, for the
premiership plague.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
When you wake up this morning and you know, reflected
on last night and I guess on the season up
till now, I mean, how deep is your sense of
satisfaction as to what you've managed to achieve so far
this season.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
I haven't had too much time to think about it.
I think probably after the season ends. I think I
just want everything to keep moving along nicely because we've
still got a little bit to do yet, one more
game to go, and then obviously main focus is on
the finals and trying to get to the final first.
But it has been amazing. You know, it's gone better
than probably everyone has expected. A lot of people didn't

(04:26):
think we'd be here. We've proved them wrong. You know,
we've proved to ourselves that we are a very good
team and we can go all the way and that's
to the final and hopefully winning it.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
How does this one. Compare to the Premier's Plate you
won as a player at Sydney FC and then the
Premier Is Plate you won as coach at Sydney FC.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
It's definitely a different feeling, obviously, starting a club from
fresh bringing the boys in. You know, at Sydney the
players were there when I was there, you know I
took over as head coach. We had a lot of
success as well. And don't get me wrong, that was
is amazing feeling to to win a trophy. It's not easy.

(05:08):
I've said that before, so the boys should be really proud,
but this is something different, you know, to work with
Terry mcflynn and Doug Corse setting up the team, it
was really challenging, but eagerly Now obviously it was paid
off and yeah, obviously very proud of everyone.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
How was the atmosphere before the game yesterday? You turned
up there? Obviously Melbourne City had drawn the previous night,
so you knew that you were getting the plate regardless.
Did you find it in any way challenging to get
the boys focused or what was it like before the game?

Speaker 6 (05:42):
Now?

Speaker 5 (05:43):
It was quite easy, actually, I think the pressure was
off the boys. You could probably see when they went
into the game. You know, that was probably one of
our best games we've played all season. It could have
been a lot more of the score line, but other
than Noll sail Or making it a few great saves.
But yeah, just there's a real buzz around. You know.
I had it last the night before when I found
out City had drawn. You know, it took me two

(06:06):
hours to get to sleep after that, so you know,
and that carried on the next day, and that's what
the players were feeling, you know. So you see feeling
of excitement and obviously can't wait to lift that played up,
which we did after the game in front of our
amazing fans.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Do you think Marley Franz while was trying to score
from that corner.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
Well, he was able for the back post because that's
what we were working on, so he definitely hit the
back posts. Yeah, no, it's good for him. You know,
obviously it's his first goal. You put the ball in
the right areas and you get rewarded sometimes, and you know,
he obviously had a couple other shots set up, one
for Max Matter that got obviously I think might have
hit Olie in the head or whatever it was. But yeah,

(06:50):
he played really well Marley, and I'm really happy for
him to get his first goal in such an important game.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
All right, so let's look ahead. One more regular season
game away at Western United this coming weekend, then a
weekend off, and then the home and away seemi's against
whoever it is. First of all, this week, Steve any
tim at all to rest a couple of guys.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
No, none at all, really, I look at it. If
I rest some players, they won't play for three weeks,
and that's probably not what we want right now. They'll
get a little break in that week off that we
have next week before the away semi final, so we'll
go with whatever is available of the boys. There's a

(07:32):
couple of boys that have picked up little injuries through
the game, but I don't think they're not too much.
I think they're probably the only one who is Felipe
whether he'll be back for the game, and then we've
got to make a decision around that. But yeah, that
would be as normal. We want to continue doing what
we've been doing. We want to win a game away

(07:52):
from home. We want to make it fifteen games unbeaten.
So there's still plenty to do for us, you know.
We can It would be nice to reach fifty goals
as well, if we could get there. We've still got
three to go, so in one game it might be difficult,
but see how we go.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
And then beyond that, it's a little bit uncertain of
because you don't know who your opponent is going to
be in the semi final until you've got you get
the week off, you get to watch the two knockout games.
How do you go about structuring the back end of
the season, Steve, You know there are things are the
things you can do regardless of who your opponent's going
to be, for example, in the first week that you
have before those knockout games.

Speaker 5 (08:28):
Yeah, you know, we concentrate on ourselves first and foremost.
You know the opponent come will come later. And you
know we've played most well. We've played all these teams
at least twice, and Western if it would be Western United,
we've played them. There will be a third time by
the time we even play them in the semis if
that's the case. So I think we know you know

(08:48):
by now, you know the teams, you know what their
strengths are, you know what their weaknesses are. It's more
about our focus going into the games. You know, you've
got to two games to get to a final. We
don't have to win it in the first one, but
you know, we definitely don't want to lose it either
in the first game. So you know, we've been very
consistent away from home and at home, so you know,

(09:10):
we're fairly confident going into the game of whoever we play.
I think it's going to be an exciting time anyway,
because next next week's you know, there's about three teams
that can finish second so and it all pans out,
you know, on in the table, the top six, so
there's a little bit to do from some teams. So
there's going to be an exciting win next week to
see how that all goes.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
I'm not sure whether whether you think about Sydney FC
anymore or not, but I'm sure you know the equation.
They've got to avoid defeats against They've got to avoid
defeat against Melbourne City to sneak in above Adelaide United.
Do you still hope Sydney FC make the six?

Speaker 5 (09:46):
Yeah, Listen, that's a tough one obviously.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
To quote. Yet I'm not going to quote.

Speaker 5 (09:54):
It's just going to be an interesting week. So let's
put it that way. Because Melbourne City needs to win
because they need to finish second to finish in that
Champions League spot as well. Sydney needed lease a draw.
So they are a very good team, Sydney, and you know,
they are a very good footballing team and they will

(10:15):
be dangerous if they get to the finals. So sometimes
it's better if.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
They're not in it.

Speaker 5 (10:20):
So and there's more pressure on me obviously when I
come up against my old clubs. So but you know,
I'm pretty sure you know, they could get a point
at least Melbourne City if not win the game. So
we'll see when that happens.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
It's very exciting that it's come down to the last
weekend that you know, apart from you guys finishing, top
positions below you too through seven are yet to be decided,
which I guess is the hallmark of any good competition.
I know this is out of your hands and maybe
jumping ahead a bit too much, but if you were
to make the Grand Final, would you like to play
it at go Media Stadium?

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yes, I would. You know, we've played all their games there.
The boys are used to it. You know, you go
to another stadium, it's not like home. It's a little bit,
you know, if we go to a bigger stadium. But
for us, my point of view is if we go
to go media, we know it really well and the
boys are fans, they love it there, and we'll see

(11:18):
what happens.

Speaker 7 (11:19):
You know.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
Obviously that's sometimes out of our hands, but you know,
obviously my preference would be for that.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
And just finally, just back to the immediate aftermath of
the game last night. You're down on the grass, The
players are there, their families are out there. There are
kids and partners and all sorts of hangers on as
well down there. Did you actually get the chance to
enjoy that little moment while it was happening. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Probably. I didn't really get to see too much of
the port because I was doing interviews, but you know,
they've been really special to us support. Obviously the boys
went over there to celebrate with them. I missed sort
of that sort of little bit, but it was nice
to hold up the premiership plate with Heroki and the
team and all the staff behind us. You know, everyone's

(12:07):
put a lot into this season. Obviously, very rewarding for
all of us so far, and something special because there's
first ever trophy from New Zealand team as well, so
so obviously we're very proud about that.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Congratulations Steve to you and the team everybody involved in
the club on ticking this box. All the best for
the next.

Speaker 5 (12:27):
Month, Jess Finey, thanks mate.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
No, thank you, Steve. Steve Coriker joining us on Sports Talk,
head coach of Auckland FC Premiers plate winners at the
first time of asking, twenty past seven. Time for your
reaction to this. Now, where does this stand in terms
of sporting achievements by New Zealand sides? Oh, eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty. Now we can make a direct

(12:51):
comparison with the other New Zealand sides who play in
Australian competitions. The Warriors, they were Minor premiers in their
eighth season two thousand and two. They finished top in
the regular season, runners up in the grand final season
and again in twenty eleven, so eight seasons it took
for them to win the minor Premiership as they call

(13:14):
it in the NRL. The Breakers, it took them eight
seasons to win the Australian National Basketball League, which they
did three times in a row. Once they'd won it
once they kept on winning it. The Phoenix have never
won the A League's Premiers Plate or even reached a
Grand Final in their eighteen years of existence. In their

(13:36):
very first season, Auckland FC have lifted some silverware. It's unprecedented.
Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty And I've been asked
by quite a few people as well over the last
little while whether I expected Auckland FC to be as
good as they have been as quickly as they have been.

(13:57):
In other words, did you expect them to win it
quite so quickly? Hard question to answer, really, because you
have to think back to how you felt at the
start of the season, so it's always twenty twenty. But
if I think back, I'm pretty sure that I couldn't
hand on heart say yeah, they're going to sweep all
before them and win silver were in their first season.

(14:17):
It's always hard to tell, particularly in the A League,
because the player turnover is just so frequent that from
season to season teams can change markedly, let alone pulling
one together from scratch and try to predict how they'll go.
None of the players really knew each other very well.

(14:38):
The imports, I'm sure who were recruited would never have
heard of their teammates, I'm pretty sure, but they quickly
forwarged a connection. They got their culture together, that wonderful
word that is very hard to define, get on the field,
and from the very startup it seem as though they'd
be a good team, hard to break down, consider very
few goals won. Their first six games, had a couple

(14:58):
of blips along the way, But since they lost their
second game to Perth and January, fourteen games unbeaten now
practically impossible to beat. So if you look back a
few months, I don't think anybody really could have hand
on heart predicted this. But as you look forward now
to the next month, you think to yourself, well, it
would be absolutely no surprise that all of they went

(15:19):
on to win the whole thing. Oh, eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty Kevin.

Speaker 7 (15:24):
Hello, good evening, pony, How are you very good?

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Thank you?

Speaker 3 (15:29):
Kevin?

Speaker 7 (15:30):
Hey, Yeah, I didn't want to. I didn't watch it again.
They form me wonders. As I said, I'm wonder I'm
openly at one side, I'm a wondrous supporter at the end.
They it's also kind of I kind of felt, if
you it's good one I'm I like to say it
was a good win for New zeal football, but also
kind of a it feels hollow, but you don't get

(15:52):
that chance to play Asian Champions League, you know what
I mean?

Speaker 2 (15:55):
I do yep, just to explain to people who aren't
aware of this, because the Awknand FC and Wellington Phoenix
teams are based outside the Asian Confederation, it's a bit
of an anomaly where an Oceanni are of course, but
this is we're playing in an Australian competition. But yeah,
if you win it, then normally the winners of the
A League go and playing the Asian Champions League. Auckland
f C won't have that opportunity, and.

Speaker 7 (16:17):
Of course it all I think the rules to apply
for the women's team because since now there's a women's
Champions League, so it's yeah. And also also if Auckland
or one into Phoenix do win the Australia Cup, they
can't play the New Asian the second the second tier competition.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yeah yeah, so basically yeah, the path to Asia. Yeah,
the path to Asia is closed for Auckland f C
and for Wellington Phoenix yep.

Speaker 7 (16:42):
And of course, as I said, I'm looking forward to
the final four games because we've got my mom's got
macarthuron Melbourne City. I'm looking forward to the final four
games and then basically see who gets that. Which Ozzie
team gets that Asian Champions League spot next season.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Yeah, it's the team that finishes second. Right. So at
the moment as I see it, Kevin, you're a lot
Western SYDNEYA in the mix. So are Melbourne City, so
are Western United, and so are Melbourne Victory. So four
teams can still finish second.

Speaker 7 (17:13):
Yep, and that spot and that spot for that, for that,
for that spot, Austrendan spot in the Asian Champions League.
Macarthy macarths already in the a CL two next season.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
So yeah, well, Kevin, I wish you well. As a
Western Sydney Wanderer supporter, I'll also say to you that
I think once we get to the finals and Western
Sydney have secured their place, they will be a very
dangerous side. They are hitting a really good run of
form at the right time. They're playing well. They came
back to draw one all with Auckland FC in Auckland recently.

(17:48):
There was a very very very late goal that allowed
Auckland to beat them over there. They're a good team.
So yeah, don't sleep on the Western Sydney Wanderers. Thanks
for your call, Kevin, Robbie, Hi.

Speaker 8 (18:05):
Come on all the way, all the ways.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Oh you sound like you're in the port.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Robbie, I love it one hundred percent. Caddin Blue bed
in the port every Saturday. But hey, get help burs it.
You know, I'm gonna lead United fans. So I've had
a good week you have. I've never thought, you know,
this time last year all can they see with just

(18:32):
a twinkle in our eye? And now we're here.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
Yeah, Robbie can ask you what what? So you've been
obviously involved in the act of support from the start.
It just seemed to happen straight away. It wasn't even
a slow burn from that first game.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
A hundred percent. The port got organized you know, several months,
about three months beforehand, and like you said, from day one,
and let's be honest, I mean, what a breath of
fresh air for the A League. You know when we
saw those first few games, you know, auctand we had
I think was it at Brisbane the first game we
had about eighteen nineteen thousand, it just got bigger and bigger,

(19:12):
and we were watching empty stadiums in Australia apart from Sydney.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
Yeah, and Robbie, you're so right. And look, I think
unfortunately for Wellington as well, the weekend showed the two
ends of it. What we saw last night at go
Media the night before at sun Corps Stadium and Brisbane
no one there, terrible person not much of the game.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
Really.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
Yeah, it was it.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
Was like, you know, you had the two advertisements for
good and the bad, but you know they will Letmophel
well done on autan listing, management, Alie Williams and the
crew and whoever else was involved, because it's not just
about football. I'm part of the tailgate community that meets
beforehand and so you know, i'd get down at about
three o'clock and I think we left last night about
nine o'clock. Was an early night because of the weather,

(19:57):
and you know, so many people have said, look, you know, Magship,
we don't go so well, we'll still be there. It's
a community that they're building. It's not just game by game,
but it's a community.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Robbie, you're so right, and it's everything that's wrapped around
it as well. You know, you look at it, you
look at that. You're right. The tailgate stuff, you know,
those who gather for a beverage or two before the game,
you know, the march down into the port area. I
need to ask you if, if, and probably when Auckland
FC make the Grand Final, presumably you'd want that at
Mount Smart.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
One hundred percent? Is talk of taking into Eden Park?
No no, no, no no. Would you take Liverpool out
of anfield, No you wouldn't. You wouldn't take Chelsea out
of Stamford Bridge, No you wouldn't. So it's got to go.
It's got to go to Mount Smart. What they do,
which would be very hard again the kids play area
with the slide and everything else. Fantastic is that I

(20:48):
see so many kids come and mom and ed, they
see you in ninety minutes, off the kids go. But
what they do is have to probably open up that
bank at the end for you know, general admissions. And
I think we could get thirty thousand in there. And again,
like a lot of these Champions League game World Cup finals,
there are people who miss out. But even Park wouldn't
do the same. Eden Park and Cittney in Australia wouldn't
be the same.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Love it, Robbie, love your passion, mate. I'll see you
at the semi final in first instance, and I totally
agree with you. Look they got thirty one thousand and
there for the All Blacks in twenty twenty three when
Eden Park was unavailable because of the Women's World Cup.
They took the All Blacks test against South Africa amount
smart and they put some temporary setting in got it
up over thirty thousand. I think taking it to Eden

(21:30):
Park would be a great shame. This is it's if
they make the Grand Final, Auckland will host the Grand Final. Now,
just to explain this, Auckland FC don't get the final say.
The final say goes to the APL who run the league.
They take all the ticket revenue from the finals matches. Therefore,
one of their main concerns is getting as many bums

(21:52):
on seats as possible to maximize ticket revenue. They want
to have it at eden Park where there are more seats.
We all know Eden Park is nowhere near as good
a viewing ground for rectangular field cut odes as go
mediasts because you're too far away. It's like Sky Stadium
exactly the same because it's a multi purpose venue. You're

(22:15):
too far away. Yes you might be able to get
more people in, but it's nowhere near as good a
viewing experience. And for Auckland FC, Go Media Stadium has
become their fortress, an absolute fortress. And I think winning
the minor premiership, finishing top earns you the right to

(22:36):
have that home advantage. And I think that home advantage
would be diluted considerably if that game was taken to
go Media Stadium. Half past seven. More calls in a moment,
oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty back in a
second Sports.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Talk, No need for the DMO. We've got the breakdown
on sports Talk. Call oh eight hundred News Talk seven.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Point thirty two talking Auckland f C. Hello Derek, Yeah, Jose,
I was at.

Speaker 6 (23:06):
The game last night, and yeah I was. I had
that guy before. I was quite surprised at how great
the surface was. It was smooth for passing and from
where I was looking at I was right on the goal,
So I was right behind the goal the corner kicker
and it swerved around into the corner and it was
more of a relief that goal went in because they
dominated the game with the yearsual pressure play didn't play

(23:28):
as well I thought last week. I thought last week
was a master class and tactics by Kiriger against a
vastly superior victory team that was that's a real good team,
especially in front of their own fans. That was a
wonderful victory, I thought. But the way they held victory
out last week and then ground them down and got
two good late goals, I thought that was a master
class performance. But last night, look it was more of
a celebration. They played great football, Max Marti could have had.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
Five goals.

Speaker 6 (23:54):
A little witful. But I saw Liverpool this morning and
they had sixty one thousand and they had I don't
know how many hundreds of thousands outside They couldn't even
get into the ground. So that guy was right, you know,
Steve corrig is right. You know, imagine giving away your
home advantage. And I think it is an advantage for
them to play there. It's a great service. It's a
great crowd there, it's a fantastic atmosphere and Eden Park

(24:17):
is a raby ground. I don't like going there. I
don't like having to go there. I don't know how
to get a park. I don't like having a walk
all the way there. I don't like being accosted by security.
I don't like miles away from the field. In as
much as I spend ninety percent of the time looking
at the big screen, might as well be at home.
And then whether you win lose the drawer, then you
got a long walk back to your car and then

(24:37):
and then it's just not worth. Eden Park is where
atmosphere goes to die. It's a raby ground, that's what
it does. And I agree with Sewan Johnson. I think
two seasons ago when there was talking about the Warriors
going there to get more people, to get more revenue,
where he said, we didn't play all year so we
could play at Eden Park. And it's the same thing here.
And you can imagine Liverpool at one of the top

(24:57):
clubs getting into the European Cup final or an FA
Cup final. Whe they've got the chance to play at
Wembley or any of the great grounds around Europe, or
the chance to play at end. They take anfield every
single time because it gives them a massive advantage. And
I think this team really has got their own culture
going on at the moment. The only problem I have
with Auckland at the moment is that the team has

(25:20):
sort of set up to provide a lot of pressure
and to win a lot of games in a league format. Okay,
whereas a one off playoff match where a coach might
take might decide to play four upfront for whatever reason,
might want to go all out attack. They might get
early goals and then they might change tactics and that
might upset Auckland, who are very much a methodical, pressure

(25:42):
driven side. That's the only way. And also a couple
of weeks ago I was going to call you about it.
I never got a chance to call you about it
after the four all draw of Adelaide, where I thought
the var got involved with they didn't need to and
they've done there. Gave it another penalty at the end
of the game too with a class with Callum Elliott
in the final and would have been by four with
three goals been given to Vaar. I mean, that's ridiculous.

(26:05):
And then the week after that, of course he was
a one all drawer with a Strata getting sent off
for winning a tackle. I mean that was just ridiculous.
Vai reference. So as long as they can they can
stay clear of var interference and as long as they
can carry on doing. Look, first of all, I really
like the way Kruger has got four wingers, and he
revolves those four wingers quite a bit. He plays two
at a time and it's quite attacking the maximater incident.

(26:28):
I quite like him because he's a center forward, which
gives Duerrillimo mayor chance to fall back in the midfield,
collectible turn and create chances as well as shoot. So
there's a lot of options here. But if you ask,
did I think they were going to do well at
the beginning of the season. When I looked at the
roster and the experience that was at the back especially,
I thought, well, wait a minute, they've got a good
base here, and with Poulsen coming in behind that defense,

(26:51):
all of a sudden, I thought, yeah, I think they
could do well here. I didn't think of my wildest
streams that go right through and play as well as
they did, did not lose any matches and dominate a
lot of opposition. Apart from that four in a loss
at home to Western United. I was at that game
as well. But apart from that, though, no, Look, there's
been a joy to watch, has been a joy to
go and have a look at. And they're an easy
team to They're said they have good characters on the

(27:11):
team as well, these good leaders. There sake has been
I couldn't speak highly enough. I didn't realize it's as
good as he was. I think he surprised a lot
of people. My player, he's my manner that the seism
for the club, should they should I get a vote.
He's been great. But no, it's been great. And I
don't know how you guys try and stay neutral in
the box because it's been so exciting. You just want

(27:33):
to jump on the back of Orphan and just you know.
And Steve Cory, I think really last night he was
trying to suppress himself in your interview that he just
had with them. But I think it's a simple case
and he just wanted to grab that plate and he
just wanted to throw it at the port and say,
there you go, We've done it. Take the trophiest all yours.
I think you wanted to do that.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
Yeah, I agree, Derek. I agree. I've got to get
Tom Doyle on the air. But great points well made
as always from you, and yeah, we do try and
stay neutral in the box. We don't always succeed. Let's
bring in form all Whites and Phoenix defending our Sky
Sport commentator and analyst Tom Doyle. Tommy that you were
there last night as part of our coverage on Sky's Boy.
What stood out for you in terms of the occasion
last night?

Speaker 8 (28:09):
First of all, it was just incredible to be there pinting.
I mean you were standing there with me. There was
just an emotion around the stadium with the fans, the players.
You stow it with Steve Corriker's interviews after the match.
You could see how much it meant to them, but
how much it meant to football in New Zealand I
think was the biggest thing it was. Especially as a
former player, it was special to be a part of it.

(28:31):
To be honest.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
You live in the Auckland region. You know there hasn't
been a team there for a while. Did you sense
that there was a fan base there just waiting for
a team like this?

Speaker 6 (28:42):
Oh?

Speaker 8 (28:42):
Absolutely? I mean you you'd know as well as anyone
when we came up to Auckland when I was playing
for the Phoenix, we would get you twenty plus thousand
at in Park to come and support them play so
there were people crying out for a team. I know
in the past, Orkan teams haven't necessarily worked out, but
it just felt with all the youngsters getting into the

(29:03):
game and the hype around football now and Auckland that
it was time for them to have a team. And
thank god they did because look at what they're doing.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
This is probably an impossible question to answer quickly, but
what has made Auckland FC let's start on the field
so successful.

Speaker 8 (29:20):
I think I think with the coaching staff they bought him.
So you've got Denny Hay that came in. He knows
a lot of those KII players. He's worked with him
as well in the All Rights, so for his knowledge
of who's available around the world, not just in the
pool of New Zealand players locally, but also that are
playing in teams overseas, like Logan Rogison players like you know,

(29:46):
you've got de Friese obviously locally, but then Nando Pineker.
The list goes on of players that probably you needed
inside knowledge to know what they could deliver on the field.
But then the foreigners on top of that that they're
boughtom have just been absolutely class. Have a foreigner come
into a foreign team and Sarkai and captain it and

(30:08):
lead it the way he has germo My. Again, the
list goes on of quality, quality imports that have made
a massive impact on the team, just.

Speaker 2 (30:17):
On the Kiwi players, and I think you're absolutely bang
on the importance of the Kiwi players and the quality
of the Kiwi plaiers that have been recruited into this team.
Francis de Reese plays the same position used to play
so well for Wellington Phoenix at left back. Can you
give us your assessment of what you've seen from Francis
de Reese in his first A League season.

Speaker 8 (30:36):
I think I've almost said it every single time I've
been asked to do some commentary with him. He's got
a left foot that I can only dream of. I
thought I used to have a good cross on me,
but he's he's got an engine. And the way that
Steve Criker plays as well with it enabling the release
of those fullbacks by overloading it with the midfield of
dropping in gives some license to get forward and unleashes

(30:58):
their foot delivery. And it'd be fair to say he's
the best in the league at doing it. He puts
it on a dime every time, and it allows the
strikers or the other side winger to get into the
box with a knowledge of that ball being delivered time
and time again onto that penalty spot for them to
run an attack. So it almost I'm not sure if

(31:19):
they planned to go that way, but it by default
became their biggest strength I think going forward. So I
mean he's had a massive part to play, not just
in one of the best defensive lines or the best
defensive team in the league, but also in their attack
going forward. So I think it's been a massive breakthrough
for his career, especially at the.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
Back, at the very back. Alex Paulson, Now, you've played
in front of a lot of goalkeepers, some more competent
than others, some i'm sure who give you more confidence
than others. How much confidence would playing in front of
a goalkeeper of the caliber of Alex Paulson give, not
just as defensive line, but his entire team.

Speaker 8 (31:58):
It goes without saying it's some unbred a stat yesterday
that he's kept twenty four clean sheets in two seasons.
It's remarkable, but it goes about saying the reason that
it've had such an impressive defensive liners because they all
trust each other and having a keeper that not just
dominates in pivotal saves in the match, but then also

(32:19):
just has so much calmness and composure on the ball
that allows him trust to be able to play back
to him, to get in shape and know that he'll
be able to pick a pass as opposed to having
to just clear the ball out, which we do commonly
see at times in the A League. But look, I
think I'd love to say that he's going to stay
on shores for fans to watch him in Auckland for

(32:40):
the coming years. But he does feel like a player
that's just going to be on to bigger and better
things and I'm going to be definitely a fan watching
from the sidelines.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Absolutely right. All right, So premius plate secure that's the
regular season. We move into the final series. Now, knockout
football is very different from a twenty six game season.
How do you evaluate Auckland FC's style and how effective
it will be when it comes to knockout football.

Speaker 8 (33:07):
It's a great question. Actually, it's got to be a
challenge because there've never been there before. But then again,
we were saying that at the start of the season
with being in the league. I think being defensively strong
really put you in good stead if you're leaking goals
going to finals, I usually see those teams struggle but

(33:27):
being so defensively sound, and it feels like they've now
got a bit of arrogance about their attack. I really
am picking them as Grand finalists. I think the time
off as well to recalibrate and obviously shake off having
won you know what they've won already, to then go
right it's finals time, because no New Zealand team in

(33:48):
football not only have won silverware, but we've always naturally
struggled when it comes to finals footballs and in that
pressure games. But there's an arrogance about this Orkquan team
that I love and that I think we've lacked in
this country for a while when it comes to football.
So look, I think my money will be on them
making it to the Grand Final.

Speaker 5 (34:07):
And then.

Speaker 8 (34:09):
It feels like a flip of the coin. At times.
It's very hard to pack who's going to win a
Grand Final? But you know, why not back the homeboys?

Speaker 2 (34:16):
Why not? Indeed, and just on that Grand Final you've
probably heard these conversations as I have about where that
might be. Obviously the club itself doesn't get to decide
apl who run the league, run the final series and
have the final say on where the Grand Final should be.
There's talk of it being at Eden Park because of
its bigger capacity. Would you prefer to see it stay

(34:37):
at go Media or move to Eden Park?

Speaker 8 (34:40):
Look, I understand that they need to potentially look at numbers,
but for me, they've made Mount Smart their home ground.
Taking that away from them, I think would be a
big loss. I mean every game I can remember when
we came up from Auckland as a Phoenix player, we

(35:00):
played it Eden part so it almost doesn't feel like
it's got anything to do with the Auckland team. It
found more like a Phoenix stadium, if I'm being quite frank.
So I think taking that away from them is actually
a massive disadvantage. I know it's out of their control
and they should be really pushing to have it at
Mount Smart, but you know you were there as well
on the weekend. There was nothing like it that the

(35:23):
crowd was humming, they were close to the action. It
was a perfect football environment, and I think taking that
away to potentially, you know, a less favorable football stadium,
they'll probably lose that culture that they've created with the
fans and being able to celebrate with them as much.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
Yep, I totally agree. Exciting times ahead regardless of the venues.
Loving your work on Sky Sport, Tom, thanks for joining
us tonight.

Speaker 8 (35:48):
Mate, Thanks Binney, appreciate it mate, No, I.

Speaker 2 (35:50):
Appreciate your time, Tom. Tom Doyle there former All whitesand
Phoenix defender and Sky Sport commentator. Fourteen away from eight.
So where will walk on the FC turn up in
Piney's Power rankings. We'll find out right after this.

Speaker 9 (36:06):
Rankings.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
Monday Night has always means Piney's Power Rankings as we
rate the best, the worst and the in between. Bits
from the Sporting Weekend. Let's get underway. The Penrith Panthers,
the four time defending champions, are six defeat in eight
games to start the season. Sure he's so.

Speaker 4 (36:36):
Quick, he's so fast, he turned from nowhere.

Speaker 2 (36:42):
The Panthers bottom of the ladder, almost impossible to comprehend.
Nine Wellington Phoenix a third straight defeat, this one to
second bottom Brisbane who hadn't won at home all season.
Bucar with the back yeld bear gain.

Speaker 10 (36:57):
That's some quality. That is a strike from the Richmond
Florid bere on.

Speaker 9 (37:08):
Yeah, he's second of the season.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Brisbane laid in their final home match of this season.
Just one game to go for the Phoenix's coming Friday
Night against Perth Glory sat. The Blues, the defending Super
Rugby champions, starting to slip off the top six. Pace
the rolling mall.

Speaker 6 (37:28):
It's got two within six meters the Blues line. This
will be the game.

Speaker 1 (37:32):
They've got to stop it.

Speaker 5 (37:33):
The rolling mall. Oh, it's charging.

Speaker 10 (37:35):
Towards the Blues line up to the line.

Speaker 5 (37:38):
Try the rets.

Speaker 9 (37:41):
We'll secure the.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
Points they did indeed in the Blues with four games
to go, need to get a bit of a riggle
on soon. The Hurricanes, speaking of getting a rigg alanted
so beating the Brumbies and camera for the first time
since twenty seventeen. Prupt to the hearken.

Speaker 11 (37:56):
They draw all the Brumbies defense across to the right wing.

Speaker 10 (38:00):
Side and he comes to hollow shut the gate.

Speaker 7 (38:03):
The big boys bolted.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
Try now up into the top six for the Hurricanes.
Six Number six is our own Mike Hosking, who's done
God's work in lobbying Sky Sport to screen one of
the biggest sporting events in the world. I've got very
good news for both of you.

Speaker 3 (38:22):
Sky I have been victorious and successful sky Sports seven
as of tomorrow night at nine o'clock live snooker.

Speaker 6 (38:30):
That's a victory.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
That is a victory. World done, Mike, and well done
to sky Sport. Two five private Hetty Adams from the
New Zealand Army Band with one of the best renditions
of our national anthem you'll ever hear at the AFL
game between Melbourne and Richmond at a jam packed mcg
over the weekend. Four four is the Crusaders starting to

(39:15):
play frighteningly like the Crusaders again and that is the
end of the game.

Speaker 12 (39:20):
It is the Crusaders who are scored six tries to
two after leading by twenty one points to the middle
at halftime, a runout convincing winners by forty three points to.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
Ten three the Warriors our first win in seven games
to start their season. Tower about a back take one,
here's top tea, top tea.

Speaker 1 (39:44):
I don't think.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
There's gonna be any doubt about that one. I was
in an Hawaiian the big don't argue with the bed.

Speaker 7 (39:51):
Time on his chest left there.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
And did the for everyone to see. Yeah, a couple
of tries for Adam Pompey, a couple of Jackson Ford
our year, Liverpool Premier League champion, sun Breaker, Paul on Stopa,
Paul On.

Speaker 9 (40:07):
Shaker, Paul on a SHOT's Liverpool. I've reached the promise line,
which four games to spare.

Speaker 2 (40:18):
Yeah, five to one one over Tottenham and a jubilant
Anfield giving Liverpool the Premier League title. But they're not
number one. That of course is Auckland FC. Silverware in
their very first season.

Speaker 4 (40:33):
Bring out the pips, lenders, celebrations, figures of an FC
are a league premiers.

Speaker 11 (40:43):
There you go, ents thoughts, I like how you were
pretending before the airs that we didn't know where you
were going to put Aukland FC. Oh, I've done two
interviews on them and a whole bunch of talked about,
but I'm going to put them at number two. Yeah whatever, Poney,
we all saw through that.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
Your your citicism and in sensive realism is noted. Ants.
Those are Piney's Power rankings back again next Monday night.
That's us for tonight. Thanks for listening in Marcus Lush
after eight o'clock. Huge thanks to answer Melissa for producing
today Sam on text party. Your restraint has been noted.
I'm not a Liverpool supporter, I'm a wolves man forever,

(41:17):
but I wanted to say the airtime and the glory
you've given Auckland FC tonight has been solid. I'd love
you now to let loose and celebrate a Premier League win.
All right, Sam, Well, if you insist, I will see
on the weekend.
