Speaker 3 (01:58):
So brilliant scenes over the weekend at sun Corpse Stadium
for the NRL's Magic Round, sixteen of the seventeen teams
gathering in Brisbane for the annual Rugby League Extravaganza, eight
NRL games across three days in front of jam pack stands.
It all kicked off actually on Thursday night with the
opening game of the women's State of Origin Rugby League Series.

(02:20):
Magic Round has been held since twenty nineteen, with the
exception of twenty twenty when it wasn't held because of COVID,
each time at sun Corpse Stadium, which has the contract
for at least the next two years. The Warriors had
It won over the weekend too, which made it even better.
Let's bring in Fox NRL commentator and presenter Jake Duke.

(02:40):
Jake ahead to look at your Instagram. Your latest Instagram
post says and capital letters. Magic Round never misses and
the photos look good too, mate. What do you think
Magic Round works so well?

Speaker 4 (02:53):
Oh God?

Speaker 5 (02:55):
That collection of Instagram pictures is very much a good
summation of what Magic Round is. The highs and the lows,
both on the field and off the field. It's a
big weekend. I think it worked so well for a
number of reasons. First of all, I think Brisbane is
the perfect place for it. It's just so central. Brisbane
has a really fantastic nightlife, so it offers so much

(03:17):
for people to make a weekend.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Out of it.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
A lot of people go for Bucks parties and it's
just a great weekend away. Casing Street right there, close
to the city, close to Fortitude Valley at sun Corps Stadium,
obviously an amazing ground to watch football at.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
I think all the teams really embrace it.

Speaker 5 (03:34):
The NRL does a fantastic job, and yeah, it's just
this perfect combination of everything in the right place that
kind of creates this fantastic atmosphere, and I think rugby
league fans just love a good time and getting together
and having a beer in the sun as well, So
it is just it is magic.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
It doesn't really miss ever.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Do most fans come for the whole weekend or are
they fans who dip it on out for a day
or to most people, especially from out of state, come
for the whole shebang, I think.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
Yeah, people mix and match.

Speaker 5 (04:05):
I know people that come for a night and then
they might go to the races in Brisbane the next
day or something, and then you have people to do
all three days. And I will say all three days
is a long slog. If you're there until eight nine
o'clock last night, like I was, you're really fading out. Luckily,

(04:27):
I'm just sitting here watching the replay of the Raiders
Storm game, which was the last game, and it was
a fantastic game that really kept everyone in the atmosphere
kind of rolling right through.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
To the end.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
I think there's previous years where people maybe have been
fading out once it gets plus six pm, but that
was such a great game last night that there was.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
No spare seats.

Speaker 5 (04:45):
Everyone stayed around for it and really ended the Sunday
really strongly. But I think for the most part, people
come and do the three days, but they're probably selective
sometimes with how early they get in and you know,
they go up to Cason Street for a bit or
you know, it is a long time to sit there
for all three days.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
You've got to kind of pick your battles.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
I think justi's handled with so many teams in town
and so many games packed into such a short space
of time.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
I do sorry.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
It runs so smoothly now, like you credit to the NRL,
they take over the whole thing that's not left up
to the individual clubs. So teams just kind of move
in and out of the dressing rooms. That there's four
dressing rooms at sun Club Stadium, so you can kind
of have one team in one that's playing and then
move in, you know, two more behind them.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
And they do they do a great job just logistically.

Speaker 5 (05:39):
There's people everywhere, there's staff everywhere, and it runs so smoothly.
Like I went to the first one in twenty nineteen,
and to be fair, from the very start it was
a great concept that was run really well, and that's
I guess why it's been such a success that the
clubs love coming, you know, they all kind of dip
in and out, unlike the fans, you know, the clubs

(06:01):
come for their game and then kind of get out
of the way. And as brisbanees are kind of perfect shit.
Everything's central, easy to get around and there's lots of
hotels that kind of everyone can fit in and come
from out of town or in town. So it is
a big road show, but it works really well.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yeah, it's been a Brisbane as you've seen every time.
And Brisbane awarded three more years of hosting in twenty
twenty four, so that's this year and the next two
pumps millions of dollars I'm sure into the Queensland economy.
So there must be other suitors, Jake, do you think
there's ever a chance to magic round what happens somewhere else?

Speaker 4 (06:37):
There's always talk about it.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
I think the Queensland government is pretty key to keep it,
and I think a lot of people in rugby league,
you know, sometimes think don't shoot the golden goose, you know,
just because something works really well and maybe you can
try and get a little bit more money somewhere else.
But do you sacrifice the experience and just the great

(07:00):
product you've created. Because as I was saying before, I
think Brisbane's the perfect sit for it. Lots of people
come from into state, everything's close. If it was somehow
you know, Sydney, it's a bit different. Sydney's a lot bigger,
a lot more spread out. If it was out of alliance.
You know, that alienates the West a little bit.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
If it's out in the west, it alienates people from
from the coast in Sydney.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
So and then you've got to account for the fact
that you need enough accommodation, you need enough places for
people to stay. That rules out more regional places like Townsville.
So you've kind of got a I think Brisbane is
just the perfect place for it. It works so well
and everything's so central. But who knows, you know, money money,
money rules.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
At the end of the day.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
But I think the Queensland government also Queensland, you're going
to remember, is also just such a massive rugby league town.
There's so much history around sun Corps Stadium and that
area just it really is the perfect place.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
I've seen lots of photos and footage Jake. It's just
you know, rugby league ripped like a jersey's as far
as the eye can see. It's almost like it's you know,
it's compulsory to wear team colors. Did you see many Warriors'
shirts around over the weekend?

Speaker 6 (08:13):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (08:13):
There there was so many Warriors fans. I was talking
to someone earlier. I think the two highlights of the
whole weekend was the ending to this game I'm watching
right now, the Raiders and the Storm, but the Warriors
cowboys came and just the Warriors fans.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
And how loud they were.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
They were the most supportive team of the weekend for sure,
because in that part of the world there's so many
expat kiwis and whenever the Warriors playing Queensland, they just
come in force. And it was a cracking game and
the team held on against all odds. And after the
game we interviewed Shawn Johnson and on the field and
right in front of all the Warriors fans and they

(08:50):
went nuts for him and it was the loudest stadium
was all weekend. So yeah, plenty of Warriors jersey getting
a round.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
I was. I think the old school Warriors jerseys, the
white ones, they're pretty cool, they're pretty pretty great.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
Those vintage Warriors jerseys are on the get one on
a hand on one myself, so I saw plenty of
them over the weekend.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Well, it sounds like you've seen plenty over the weekend.
If your Instagram's anything to go by, and the slight
croakiness in your voice, you've done well to get through mate,
if I'm honest. Thanks for spending some time with us. Look,
I know it's a bucket list event for many rugby
league fans on this side of the Tasman, so I
think you'll be seeing a few more Warriors jerseys in
the years ahead.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:32):
Absolutely, fantastic week and I've just only gotten home actually,
and I think I'm going to get into bed and
stay there for another eighteen hours or so.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
Thanks for taking that call, Jake. Great to chat, no problem,
good to talk, No good to talk to you too, mate,
Jake Juke there out of Fox Sports and their NRL coverage.
If you've been to NRL Magic Round, I would love
to hear what it's like. Give us your first hand experiences.
If you've been across there at some stage over the
last five or six years, maybe even the weekend just gone.
I presume it will be sort of getting back in

(10:02):
their dribs and drabs today. Maybe you've just got back
from the weekend tell us about it, oh eight hundred
eighty ten eighty and watching it all unfold over the weekend,
I couldn't help but think that Super Rugby needs to
bring back super Round, but it needs to do it
properly this time. You might remember, or actually you may
very well have forgotten. Super Round was held the last

(10:24):
three years in Melbourne, but it never really took off.
In fact, it was a flop, very poor attendances, zero
media interests, no cut through even among die hard rugby fans,
and it's not really hard to see why it was
in the wrong place. Melbourne's AFL territory. It's Ossie Rules

(10:48):
and nothing else there. There's just no rugby fabric in
Melbourne at all, and now there's no team there either,
so we can scrub that as a venue. Now there is,
without doubt an appetite to revisit and resurrect super Round.
Among the powers that be here is Super Rugby. Pacivic
chair Kevin Malloy on the radio with me yesterday.

Speaker 7 (11:11):
Yeah, absolutely, it's part of what we're talking about now
in terms of the draw we'd very much like to
get super Around back in the mix. It's then the
number of conversations going on now with a couple of locations,
and obviously there's financial considerations and logistics considerations, but we're
working pretty hard to see if we can get a
super Round back in next season.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
So there you go. That's good news. The big question
and the thing which the success or failure of it
largely swings on, is where. Now I've got two suggestions.
One's a little bit left field, and you might have
mentioned or might have heard me mention this before Fiji
Fiji for super Round. The scenes up there for Fiji

(11:53):
and draw matches absolutely magnificent, massive crowds, incredible atmosphere and
absolute winner. Now I will concede that there are certain
logistical challenges to overcome, but it should absolutely be on
the table super Round up in Fiji. Second suggestion Dunedin.

(12:21):
Good venue, rectangular, it's got a roof on it, so
whether it doesn't become a factor handy to the octagon
for anyone who wants to kick on afterwards. They love
their rugby down in Dunedin and with the influx of scarf,
he's at the start of each year. It would absolutely
go off there. So Fiji and Dunedin, I'm putting on

(12:42):
the table keen for your views on those or other
potential places that super Round could be held. Oh, eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty, and how do you set
it up? I presume yet because there's eleven teams, right,
so somebody misses out and Steve has already said on
text Bindy with eleven teams, how would you pick which
team misses out on Magic Round?

Speaker 4 (13:04):
Steve?

Speaker 3 (13:04):
I guess I just do it the same way that
the NRL do it. Because there's seventeen teams in the NRL,
only sixteen can go. I guess they just go on
a rotational basis. What I would do, though, is I've
actually even come up with a drawer. I've been thinking
about this this afternoon and I've even come up with
a drawer as to who you'd you know, who the

(13:26):
matchups should be in terms of when I think you'd
have a game on the Friday night, three on the
Saturday and one on the Sunday. So Friday night game
seven o'clock. Then you'd have a two o'clock, a four
thirty and a seven o'clock on the Saturday, and then
you'd have a Sunday afternoon game to wrap it up with.

(13:46):
And like I said, I've even come up with the
matchups because I thought to myself, there, you know, you'd
want it so that all five games had something about it,
had something about them. You wouldn't want people to to say,
for example, come along on the Saturday just for the
two o'clock game and then think to themselves, don't really
you know, not too much ready to see here in
the fourth thirty or the seven o'clock. So I've cut

(14:09):
that off at the pass with a with a proposed draw,
but that would just be for the first year, because
you couldn't have the same team missing out every year. Steve,
it's a good point, oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
If you've been to Magic Rounds in Brisbane, tell us
all about it. If you're keen on Super Rugby's Super

(14:30):
Round returning, whereabouts should it be and any other thoughts
as well about the return of Super Round with ten
of the eleven teams gathering in one venue for a
weekend and making it into something special, a rugby extravaganza,
a bucket list event which is what Magic Round has become?
Seven two on US TALKSB with back. We're back with

(14:52):
your calls right after this.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Forget the refs call, you make a call on eight
hundred and eighty eighty Sports Talk on your home of
Sport News Talks ABS Talks.

Speaker 4 (15:02):
The B.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Seven twenty four. A lot of suggestions coming in the
new christ Church Stadium, says this one. Magic Round should
be at christ Church's new stadium, says Danny, or the
Super Round for Super Rugby. Just before I go to
the calls, Paul says, pinty Super Rugby will never take off.
What Australian fans will flock to New Zealand and vice versa,

(15:24):
what Molwana and Druwer fans will flock to Ossie on
New Zealand. You can't manufacture tribalism. The nrol's one hundred
years old. What you can do? I think Paulter's make
a stars because I think if you make it an
occasion then people will come. I look at the sevens,
remember the Wellington Sevens. Sevens had absolutely no history and
yet they created this event that people wanted to be at.

(15:46):
Magic Round only started in twenty nineteen and they probably
thought who's going to travel to Brisbane. NRL's a new
South Wales sport. Who's going to go to Brisbane? Goodness me,
they get so many. I take your point. It will
take time. You can't just snap your fingers and make
it happen. But I tell you what you can do
a heck of a lot better than having it in Melbourne.
Have it in New Zeald where we love our rugby,

(16:08):
or up in Figi where they clearly go mad for it.
Turn it into a you know, a bucket list event.
Andy and I were talking about this earlier. If Magic
Ground sorry super Round was in Suva or in Lautoka,
the first two seats they sold on the plane would
be Andy and me. We'd up there in a heartbeat. Hello,

(16:31):
christ I completely agree with you.

Speaker 6 (16:37):
So I'll talk about the NRL. I didn't go, but
I am going to go next year, and like just
to see all the fans there from a different club,
but you also get to see the fans from which
club supports which team. So a lot of people will

(16:57):
going for the Raiders the other night against Melbourne because
we all hate Melbourne, you.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
Know, like I've got the tribal of them.

Speaker 6 (17:05):
And then if we had that stay in Auckland one year,
Sydney the next year, Brisbane, then.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
Christ Church blah blah blah.

Speaker 6 (17:13):
If we did that, we're there the same thing. You
go along and you'd be like there for one or
two days and you would watch five or six games
and you'd just go right like I get to see
these teams in force. I think Super Rugby did this
as stupid when they put it in Melbourne for so

(17:33):
long to try and keep the game there. And I'm
glad that we lost Melbourne, but we kept her, you know.
So I'm thinking it's going to be interchangeable between the
eleven teams and some sort of rotter because I would
go to cig like you just said, to be there
for that, like it would be an absolute, an absolute week.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
Yep, yep. You stalk about dinner ol on the way
up all the way back sort of. You know, I
don't know whether they could have it all in Loutoka.
So I'm just spit balling here, Chris. That's all we're doing,
just brainstorming. You know, Lovetoka Suva. You might have to
have it across the two grounds to make sure that
the grass held up. Okay, it's only five games. Like
I just feel like there is there needs to be

(18:18):
a can do attitude about this.

Speaker 6 (18:22):
And it's about spreading the love of the game and
retaining the fans that you do have, Like like when
you go up to the Broncos home stadium, Same Court Stadium,
I've got bars and everything all around there, and it's
a thing and that you're you're involved. But I was

(18:43):
watching the many John's shows last night and it's an
incredible platform for everybody to be involved. And I think
we can do that in Awkham and christ Church as
well with Rogue Union.

Speaker 4 (18:56):
So why not give it a go?

Speaker 3 (18:59):
Why not get that's a that's the attitude, Chris, give
it a go, Give it a go. I think you
know you have to start somewhere. Brisbane and in the
NRL obviously decided in twenty nineteen we'll give it a go.
And Brisbane they would have had a few suitors. I'm
sure probably less enthusiastic suitors than they've got now because
it was all new. But Brisbane obviously got some state
government backing and said yeah, will do it, We'll do it,

(19:21):
and in its first year, I think they had it
over four days in its first year. Then it was COVID,
so they didn't have it in twenty twenty, so restarted
again in twenty twenty one and since then. I mean
they get fifty thousand every day there. Now they sell
the tickets out. You actually can't just rock up and go.
The tickets sell really really quickly down he says, it's

(19:45):
a great product, great climate. The day passes a bit pricey.
It's two hundred and fifty dollars for a day pass. Yeah,
that's up there, especially if you go for all three
days and then factor and travel, accommodation, food and beverage,
all that sort of thing. But people travel all the
time and spend money on food, accommodation, airfares, all that

(20:06):
sor the thing. So if if it's if it's the
bag you're into, if it's dull thing, then you know
you pay the money. What Jake say, You have stag
dues and things like that up there, imagined the carnage
and a stag do it magic round now, Graham, I
know where you want to hold it.

Speaker 2 (20:22):
Yeah, I mean I'm here now. Actually, it's just.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
What are you at the newt.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
Mention? Dan? And I don't want to start a wall
with the need but but I mean no, they can
have their turn. But yeah, i'd like to see uh
you know christ Church, I mean with I'd like like
the last Colleen know his stuff a bit about rugby
en League and rugby union en League and yeah, I
think it's it's it's worth talking about because I mean

(20:50):
the Melbourne idea was full a disaster in terms of
we have trouble with crowds anyway, and then taking it
to as you say, an a FL city and it's
also got a very good league team there too, and
you know there's so many sports thread everyone a sport.
You know, it was ahead of rugby and the pecking
order in Melbourne, you know, it's barely rates. You know,

(21:12):
it's what's the death notices they have the rugby results
and you know, small writing.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
So I know you're right, you got to go You've
got to go way back in the sports pages. Grime
here you get in the middle of AFL season. Yeah,
you've got to go about fifteen sixteen pages back to
find anything on anything else.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
Yeah I've heard that, but yeah, I mean I love
it here. Obviously it would take you know how long
gets organized, But you know, cig and I did. Everyone
would have to put up, you know, because I've often
moaned about teams going over there where we lost we
we lot one this year there at last. But you know,
everyone a BDS, so everyone's got to put up with
the you know, the conditions and obviously fig threw they

(21:51):
you know, when they can the infrastructure there, I don't know,
but certainly they would deserve it if you could snap
your fingers and give it to a group of rugby
fans thegan runs of each near the top of the list,
wouldn't they.

Speaker 3 (22:06):
And I think and for visitors as well, I mean,
Fiji is a is a tourist destination Graham. I'm not
saying christ I'm not saying.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
International people come to come to New Zealand cities. But
if in New Zealanders most people go and they gave
to the other islands are very popular now too, rare
Tonga and Tonguan and sam Are. But yeah, but that
would be great, Yeah, I mean if they could, if
they could pull it off, that would be wonderful because yeah,

(22:39):
be good for the game. And I think the idea
of having a centralized you know, like Captain and Brisbane
over the weekend, not that I saw much of it,
but it was certainly certainly looked pretty spectacular what I saw.
The oddies do those things, well, well, they've got the stadiums,
they've got got the bars and the stadiums, they've got
the club, the rivalries. So yeah, but now if we

(23:00):
could do it, yeah, good on there, Jason.

Speaker 3 (23:03):
Yeah no, look, Graham, if look, if if it could
turn up at your new state, him down there again,
I would be on the plane down there to experience
it all. Now, you'll enjoy my draw that I've put together.
I'm not gonna read it out just yet. I've got
a couple of other things to do, but you'll enjoy
the drawer I've put together. The Crusaders are in it.
Obviously I haven't given them the buy. You'll be pleased

(23:24):
to know. But I do have a drawer, a draft
drawer for Super Round. Thanks for your call, Graham, Ruben Mamma.
You might know the name and the voice. He regularly
reads the sports news here on news talks. He'd be
He's been in Brisbane for Magic Round. In fact, I
think he's headed to the airport now to get a

(23:45):
late flight back. So I'm not quite sure what kind
of shape he's going to be, but let's get him
on the radio. How was it, Ruben? How was Magic Round?

Speaker 6 (23:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (23:54):
Play, that's good to be on. It's been a fantastic
few days for sure. I think obviously I'm a big
league here for the first time going to Magic Round,
there was just an awesome festival like atmosphere.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
It felt like, you know, like guessai.

Speaker 8 (24:09):
Equivalent of a music festival, but it's all about footy,
so it's a bit of dreamland.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
Just they run it so well.

Speaker 8 (24:14):
I think I can't remember how many years prisons had
it now, but I've only heard good things, so I
wanted to get amongst it, and it was amazing, just
all like no matter where you went outside Tungklek Stadium
in the city, inside the stadium, it was just awesome
for the whole duration.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
So there were eight games across the weekend, a couple
on Friday night, three Saturday, three yesterday. So how many
did you go to?

Speaker 4 (24:37):
We end up going to six.

Speaker 8 (24:39):
I actually ended up with we only mavntaged because I
mean it's a hot ticket and the thing I forgot
about when we initially went for it. We only mad
to get the group of us as eight of us
that went, know, we only man to get two days
worse because it was so hot, but managed to me
and one of the boys mass to scramble to the
Sunday which had the biggest crowd. I made about forty
nine thousand there for the Broncos game, which is the
Broncos stand. Was just horrible, but it was yeah, great,

(25:03):
I think majority of people. Definitely, I would have been
surprised when he went to the fusel Head, I think,
come yesterday.

Speaker 4 (25:10):
But yeah, it was. It was really good.

Speaker 8 (25:12):
I think regardless of the people couldn't quite get a ticket,
you get a messed in the atmosphere, regardless out in
the out in the concourse and everything and the like.

Speaker 3 (25:19):
Because you know, most of us support one team right where.
I know you're a Broncos fan. A lot of our
listeners Warriors fans, but there's fans were all sorts of places.
But the fact that you went to five games that
didn't feature your team, I think that's the secret sauce here,
isn't it. Because if Super Rugby are looking to do
something similar, it's a matter of getting people along just
for the sport, just for the occasion. Isn't it, rather

(25:41):
than I'll just go and watch the Broncos.

Speaker 4 (25:44):
Yeah, I think that's it.

Speaker 8 (25:45):
I think everyone that went there is a rugby league
die hard no matter what. And you know, I was
wearing my Broncos jersey on Friday and Saturday even though
they didn't play till Sunday.

Speaker 4 (25:54):
At the time.

Speaker 8 (25:54):
It was funny because I thought I would only wear
it on Sunday because I didn't want to, you know,
be you know, to looking too hard at wearing it
that long, and then you get there and you felt
naked if you didn't have a jersey on. So it
was pretty cool, like every and it's just like a
big festival ever and showing their colors.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
Yeah, it was. It was awesome.

Speaker 8 (26:10):
I think this everyone loves their footye, so they just
wanted to come and get amongst it. And even if
you didn't support it, like there was a lot of
points scored, so you just enjoyed. And I think a
lot of people in big groups of their mates. So
I think that's all what it's all about. Pine In
it's probably a puge Rugby going to do similar that
sort of the atmosphere they need to have and build
it into a little village really. I think that's where
it works too, because you're only five minutes from the
stadium and go to Catson Street, which is notorious for

(26:31):
all the Broncos stands before their games, and everyone just
based out of there, so you've got only a small
little precinct. Rather than have to travel too far to
get to places, they just run it really well, which
I think my brisonin had it so long.

Speaker 3 (26:41):
Yeah, well you've survived, You've come through the other side.
I know you're not on a flight till late tonight,
so you've stal got a bit of time on that
side of the Tasman. I'm sure you'll avoid the trouble.
Thanks for joining us on sports talk Robes look for
to send you back here.

Speaker 4 (26:55):
Thanks Piney, take care of mate.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Now you take care to Rubin. I think you should
take care more than me. I'm okay. You've still got
a couple of hours over there, Ruben Mama from our
news Talk Z'B sports team, Jason Mountain. He says, Simon
put some stands at Bay Oval. You got the Chiefs there,
the Blues just up the road. Cane's territory goes as
far as telled I do it? Agree, Simon, do it?

(27:20):
Chris says, I think rivalries are the best way to
go about a super Round. I like the idea of
duned and definitely more one against Fiji Highlands v Crusaders
for me, says Chris. The Chiefs miss out.

Speaker 4 (27:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:31):
See, I don't think i'd leave any of the any
of the New Zealand teams out of super Round. It
feels to me like New Zealand's the place for it.
If you're not gonna have it in Fiji, which you know,
like I say, might be a bit optimistic, then in
New Zealand. And I think if it's in New Zealand
then all the New Zealand teams have to be in it.

(27:51):
A couple of people have pointed out to me, including Gary,
the big forty weekends sounds great. Bear in mind though,
you're going to need a venue that has ten thousand
beds available for out of town visitors. Yes, another good point.
Somebody else has made a similar one on on tien Y.
I guess with Wellington when they had the sevens they

(28:14):
managed to find beds for two lots of thirty five
thousand people across a weekend. It's yes, it's a challenge.
But on one I'm sure that you know, the tourism
arm of Dunedin would take on in a heartbeat if
you told them that, you know, fifty thousand people across
two or three days we're going to come into the
city to watch from rugby and when they needed somewhere

(28:35):
to stay, I reckon they'd find some solutions. It's a
good point, though, a good point.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
Right.

Speaker 3 (28:39):
Here's my drawer. Here's my drawer for Super Out Friday Night.
This is in Dunedin. Okay, if we haven't Dunedin Friday Night,
Mawana Pacifica the Great Entertainers against the war Retars that
kicks us off on the Friday night. But I was
sort of buffet. But you know, plenty of running rugby
between those two Triple Heater on Saturday two o'clock in

(29:02):
the afternoon Hurricanes Brumbees four point thirty on Saturday Fiji
and Drewer against the Reds Saturday night, Southern Derby Highlanders,
Crusaders Sunday afternoon Blues Chiefs. That'll be my draft drawer

(29:24):
for Super Rugby's Super Round. With apologies to Western Force fans.
Twenty one away from eight Force talk on newstalk, z'd.

Speaker 9 (29:35):
Be right running pall Higgins onto his boots, Sullivan soon
Sullivan's not for dries Balent Sullivan, what a night for him?
Dropped onto the pope from Higgins and Balen Sullivan with
a smile a mile wide that says that is my

(29:55):
fourth Tryumph.

Speaker 3 (29:56):
The Knights and the Canes are home. They're thirty five
to seventeen ahead with a kickta cup. Yeah, four second
half tries to Bailan Sullivan saw the hurricane stunned the
tabletopping Chiefs thirty five seventeen and they're super Rugby Derby
and Wellington on Saturday night they came from behind seventeen
nine at the break, twenty six unanswered points in the
second half, courtesy of bail and Sullivan's four tries, three

(30:17):
of them converted by Ruben Love Bailon Sullivan's with us.
Thanks for joining us, mate. What was it like coming
on quite early? You came on with seven minutes gone
when Kenny Nahlo Saturday pretty serious injury. What was it
like coming on that early from the reserves bench and
into a somewhat unfamiliar position.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
Yeah, I was actually pretty shell shocked.

Speaker 10 (30:40):
You know, the whole week training at midfield, swapping off
Billy and ever hit too many rips on the wing.
But yeah, I guess I just got to trust myself
and trust what I do on the field, and yeah,
I guess you get four tries.

Speaker 4 (30:56):
Out of it.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
So once you get out there, are you are you
taking quite major guidance from from some of the other
back line leaders As you say, you trained obviously to
cover mid mainly, but I guess there is always a
possibility you'll end up on the wing. But are you're
getting a bit of guidance from some of the leaders
in the back line when you get out there.

Speaker 10 (31:14):
Yeah, yeah, no, I leant on Nanny and Ruben quite
a bit during the game and now they helped me
quite a bit through some of the moves, and yeah, no,
it was It was really good to be able to say,
have the opportunity to get.

Speaker 11 (31:31):
On the wing and I guess get the ball.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
It was halftime, it's seventeen to nine to them. They
get that runaway try just before half time to go
and seventeen to nine ahead. It was a really tight
arm wrestler of the first half. What was the mindset
like at the break? What were the conversations at the halftime.

Speaker 11 (31:49):
It was actually pretty calm.

Speaker 10 (31:50):
The boys were, well, we had a bas meeting and
the boys are really calm and how we were talking.
We're real clear on what our next jobs needed to be.
And I guess it was just down to executing it.
And yeah, the boys are the Fords the depart as well,
and yeah, I guess it all came together and that
second enough and it was really.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
Cool, and the tries just started to flow. Forty six minute,
fifty ninth, sixty fifth, seventy fourth. Why do you think
everything just came your way?

Speaker 11 (32:21):
I guess with.

Speaker 10 (32:24):
Sure Stevenson going on on the naughty chair, I think
we exploited the opportunity going wide and kickspace behind. So yeah,
I think we did really well in that space and
took our opportunities, and yeah, I guess it paid off.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
How important and and needed was this win off the
back of a really good performance against the Brumbies a
week ago, back to back wins for just the second
time this season. How important was this this win to
stay firmly in the top six conversation.

Speaker 10 (32:54):
Yeah, like, I guess it's from It's really important, not
only just for the table, but for us as a team,
like we really start to win every game and you know,
so I'm going to just ever been going our way,
So I think as a team connected us a lot
more and it goes to show that our trainings are

(33:16):
how do you proof in the pudding? And yeah, so
it's it's really cool to actually do what we're doing
at training and putting that on the field.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
Was there any frustration around the inconsistency, because, as you say,
you know there was there's games where you look a
million dollars and then you know the next week it
doesn't quite go. You're why you're starting to buy the
looks of it anyway, build some consistency. Is it frustrating
when it doesn't come together for you on the field sometimes?

Speaker 10 (33:41):
Yeah, definitely, Like it's like playing those eight games before
not early in the season are starting and it's done
the midfielders, Like it was really frustrating because I know
how good our team actually is and we all know
it ourselves, and every time we come back into the
change rooms after a loss, it's alway, isn't it always

(34:02):
in our own way? So I guess it was good
to get out of our own ways, and yeah, put
on a performance that we did last night, so it
was pretty awesome.

Speaker 3 (34:11):
And you started the first nine games of the season
in the centers. I know that that thirteen jersey is
your favorite jersey. How did you handle the challenge of
moving into the reserves with the return of Bully Propter.

Speaker 10 (34:23):
Yeah, obviously a little bit goats, but like I'm happy
to step down or step aside to let him come through.
Like he's an awesome player and I really got a
lot of respect fromhim, and yeah, and he's performing really
well with the moment, and you know, why not keep

(34:43):
him in that jersey? And you know, obviously I'm pretty
good about it, but it's a bit of another team,
and you know, I'm just.

Speaker 11 (34:49):
Here to make sure our.

Speaker 10 (34:50):
Team's making their top finals than their civil finals.

Speaker 11 (34:55):
Yeah, obviously get it, but that is what it is.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
And look, we don't know the extent of Kenney's injury.
I guess we'll find that out in the next little while.
But if there is a vacancy on the wing, imagine
you'd be pretty happy to put your hand up to Philip.

Speaker 11 (35:10):
Yeah, one hundred percent.

Speaker 10 (35:11):
Like I've played a lot of FBC on the wing
when I was previously at the Chiefs.

Speaker 11 (35:15):
Yeah, obviously I played on the ring.

Speaker 10 (35:17):
And you know it's a place there are boys, not disregarded,
but always you know, I'd always beat myself on the
wing and been in the most of it. Obviously got
a lot more more, but you know, wingers, if you
get busy, you get trials like that. I but yeah,

(35:38):
that's definitely opportunity I'm going to take in.

Speaker 11 (35:41):
Hopefully Kenny's it's not as serious as as we were
thinking as at the.

Speaker 3 (35:46):
Moment, so yeah, yeah, we'll keep eyes on it. And
milestone X for Brad and your say, has fiftieth game
for the Hurricanes. I know milestones like these aren't necessarily
you know, significant toil afterwards, but do you use milestones
like that as a bit of extra fuel for for
certain games when they do come up for your teammates, Yeah.

Speaker 10 (36:05):
For sure, friends an awesome player, and he's an awesome
man off the field, so to get one up for
home as Yeah, makeing the lost for sure. The boys
had a lot more fuel in the tank towards the
end of the game because of it. And yeah, no,
definitely deserves are winning diffinitly deserves the fifty games and to.

Speaker 3 (36:24):
The bye week now as well. Get a week after
you get you're gonna get away? What are you gonna
have you going to spend the bye week?

Speaker 10 (36:30):
Yeah, I have to talk to my partner about that. Well,
you know, we'll organize some link and hopefully you'll be
able to kick the feed up and lit a bit
of training here and there. So yeah, I'm looking forward
to the time off.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
I bet well. Bailing with four tries, I mean, it
was just awesome to watch. Anyone caught your teammates off guard.
We had both Bully Procter and du Plus on the
radio after the game and neither of them knew. I said,
did he get four? Did he get four?

Speaker 4 (36:53):
Well?

Speaker 11 (36:54):
Asking me another come on, boys, I love it?

Speaker 3 (36:58):
Correct, So on last night. Look forward seeing how the
rest of the season plays out.

Speaker 11 (37:01):
Yeah me too, brother, awesome man, Thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (37:04):
No, thank you bailing Baylon Sullivan, the four tries hero
for the Hurricanes. On the weekend fourteen to eight, Piney's
Power Rankings up next our Kings Say Yes, Indeed, Monday
night time for Piney's Power Rankings, rating the best, the worst,

(37:24):
and most of the in between. Bits from our Sporting
Weekend let's go the Wellington Phoenix. There's season in many
ways thankfully has come to its end for Wellington Phoenix.
They stumble across the finish line with another defeat at home.
A major refresh needed ahead of next season.

Speaker 10 (37:45):
Nine.

Speaker 3 (37:46):
The Indian Panthers are sorry, Saga that never felt like
it would end well.

Speaker 7 (37:51):
It was always going to be a disaster right from
the word go. It's been an exercise that hopefully we
never go through again.

Speaker 3 (38:01):
Jeff Green just one of those who predicted the Panther's
demise eat Lillam Lawson's at eight another disappointing Formula one
outing for the racing balls Kiweeds, Liam Lawson and the pets.
He is out of this race. That's a fourth retirement
from this Miami Grand Prix, Lawson never recovering from being
clipped on the opening lap. Greg Popovich may be the

(38:25):
greatest ever NBA coach, calling time on his coaching career.
Also pop the master of the quarter time interview. What
happened offensively in that period?

Speaker 4 (38:37):
Turnovers?

Speaker 3 (38:39):
What about on the defensive end?

Speaker 7 (38:40):
They had their most productive quarter?

Speaker 3 (38:41):
What'd you see there?

Speaker 4 (38:42):
Turnovers?

Speaker 3 (38:43):
Pop neck turnovers? Then six the World Snooker Championship has
reached its final. The wiley Welshman fifty year old Mark
Williams on top of the world.

Speaker 12 (39:02):
What Williams's twelve men up against the Chinese pretender Jao
Shintong is s Honey's down one in the crowd to
show their appreciation.

Speaker 4 (39:17):
Erronial suivant Josey Chong.

Speaker 3 (39:20):
He's in the final and leads that final the best
of thirty five framed decider against Mark Williams eleven six
after the first of two scheduled days. Five into the
top half with Newcastle Knights five eighth Fletcher Sharp. What
been away to celebrate your twenty first birthday than this
gives it?

Speaker 5 (39:38):
Fector Fletcher Sharp, He'll weave his way all the way.

Speaker 8 (39:42):
To a twenty first birthday.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
Hat trick, leading his side to a thirty points to
four win over the rabbit Os. Sure four is Baalon
Sullivan who scored that very number of tries for the
Hurricanes against the Chiefs on Saturday Nights.

Speaker 9 (39:57):
Sullivan, though Sullivan not for tright Baylon Sullivan, what a
night for him?

Speaker 3 (40:05):
Off the bench and to the headlines. Sean Johnson and
the Warriors fans who took over magic round and shared
their love for their recently retired prince. Yeah, to see
them achieve what they've worked all week for. For the
tile on Erad's faces, I'm the wise and.

Speaker 5 (40:22):
They to leave it, go and say hello Pa god Gomes.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
Go on the field. Sewan Johnson's successor in seven, Luke Metcalf,
does his legs go out from Yes they do.

Speaker 4 (40:37):
Yes, it's his nic favor from Metcalf.

Speaker 3 (40:39):
It's a beauty. Well that might just be the defining
moment of this enthralling contest, and it was indeed, as
the Warriors went on to win. Luke Metcalf growing into
that seven jumper week by week, but he's not number
one that goes for I can't remember how many times
the Blackburn seven's continuing to set the seven standard in

(41:02):
a class of their own. One final time for the
season has done. He's helling to the double league winners
and World Championship winners. How are you feeling about that lineup?

Speaker 13 (41:16):
You know, Piney, If Luke metcar continues this level of growth,
we're going to have to start calling him met cow.

Speaker 3 (41:25):
How long you've been warning to use that?

Speaker 13 (41:27):
About twenty four hours, mate, And I think I nailed
the delivery. I was actually practicing the delivery of that
before this segment.

Speaker 4 (41:36):
Anyway.

Speaker 13 (41:36):
You know, I think put Greek popo Itch up two
places and I'm pretty happy with that.

Speaker 3 (41:40):
Good power Inkings, Piney, You've done well. They're back next
Monday six to eight and that is us on Sports
