the Silver Funds am Z starts this weekend. The premiership
(01:13):
is on. We'll talk to her about that. Plainly. We've
got to talk about Grace Wicker and what happens there,
what's going to happen, what should happen, what hasn't happened, happened, happened,
it goes on. So Dame Nolin Toto will join us shortly.
Heath Mills is on the show. Will Cricket Association Chair
and he's only Cricket Players Association boss man as well
(01:36):
IPL Parcel players. We know that Pakistan and India are
having to crack at each other again and a lot
of New Zealanders with the PSL they want out. We'll
talk to him. Excuse me about their chances of returning.
Are they just going to go to Dubai? Are they're
going to come all the way back here to New Zealand.
Heath has been talking to the powers that be only
(01:59):
a few hours ago. He will join us after we
talk with Dame Nolen and we'll for instan things off
with a bit of Rugby League. Brad Walter, seeing that
journalists with NRL Digital takes a look at the Warriors
chances over the weekend and as a look at some
other big games that are happening. I'll tell you what
last night I had a bit of a slow patch,
but there was some storming tries the end of that
(02:21):
Eels game up against the Dolphins that was worth sitting
through some of the dross for I tell you, I
am tragic. And also I'll keep you up to date
with the fun and games as the Blues take on
drewer Over in Suva game kicked off about five minutes ago,
and we'll keep you up to date with that game
as it continues, because the Blues need to win. We'll
(02:43):
see what goes on there. But before we do any
of that, let's climb on into the sport today and
in sport today, prepare for chaos, be precise, expect the unexpected.
Blues coach Vern Kottra has alerted his team to the
threats of Fiji and Drewer. The game in the Islands
has just kicked off. I wonder if they took any
(03:05):
notice of I.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Think we have to be prepared to accept line breaks
but scrambled hard to get back. I think we are
prepared to be surprised at times by the way they
can keep the ball alive and I think that's been
a key focus to us, and also when we have
the ballers, making sure that we are very accurate with it.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Don't panic. Mounts Martle hosts the A League Final that's
if Auckland FC qualify. The firm boss Nick Becker explains
the process.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
First of the Alien made a decision.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
On the venue.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
They had a preference for Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
The thirty first for the Grand Final, Eden Park isn't
actually available.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
That night, so that was a big consideration in their
decision making. It also comes down to broadcast preference.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Black Fans coach John Barnteing spoke of the selection of
Braxton the ghost Runner, Sirenson McGee, the debutante who will
boot up against the Waller Ruz tomorrow at five pm
over a Newcastle as it goes.
Speaker 6 (03:59):
She's here, she's instinctive and we had awesome Oprah Kim
so here to gun represented family and thank.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
You for the first time.
Speaker 7 (04:07):
It's a pretty special moment.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And Silver Fern color Jackson has given Australia netball the
big year nah national representation and her love for the Pulse.
We just too much for her to bolt across the Tasman.
Speaker 8 (04:22):
I would love to go to Australia, but I love
playing for the Silver Ferns more, which has meant missedaying
back in New Zealand. And I also have so much
hearts with the Pulse that would really love to win
a Z premiership again with them.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Was that deliberate heart with the Pulse? Possibly not the
Pulse start the A and Z Premiership tomorrow in Parmis
the North up against the Magic and that's sport today.
It's a big hello to Dame Noling Toto is the
coach of the Silver Ferns head off the A and
Z Premiership. Ready to go. The work starts now. It's
(04:57):
all about Mahi for you, isn't it, Dame, Welcome to
the show.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Oh thank you for having me And as you say,
this weekend's a good start for us to see everybody
on court. It seems like a long time coming. But
really looking forward to seeing what the new rules look like.
Where people are at obviously for slection, but just to
get the ball rolling. But it's a good vibe at
(05:21):
the moment, so can't wait to see what this week
he looks like.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
We'll look at the new ruling shortly, but plainly, the
story around the Ferns, around New Zella Netball is Grace
wiki and where we sit with that. Anything advanced over
the last couple of days because a lot of former
players are coming out now going you know, you've really
got to change your mind, and I think New Zealand
Netball are starting to not cave in but showing the
ability to flex with what seems like a natural progression
(05:49):
for someone of Grace's talent.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
Yeah, very much. So. I think there has been, as
you say, a lot of the happening and the media,
past players and current players making comments, which to some
degree is actually quite good for our sport as well.
You know, we're our there. I look at being a
discussion that's been had behind the scenes for a very
long time since Grace left. From the board perspective, CEO myself,
(06:17):
there's a few people that have been in those discussions
I understand. I mean, I think right from the startup
sort of voiced my opinion and really wanting Grace to
pay for the Silver Firm, so I've sort of been
open about that. But I also understand from a strategic
from a commercial, from a broadcasting what that also means
(06:40):
and their ability to be able to offer something to
the rest of our athletes as well in the domestic competition.
So you know, I understand that, and you know, if
we can get ourselves to a win win situation, which
I know Netborn New Zealand are working through, that would
be fantastic. But you know, there's a lot writing on
(07:02):
well for us in the Silver Ferns to have Grace back.
But as I say, I understand the domestic competition and
where everybody else needs to sit as well, so hopefully
we can get a win win for everybody.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
It's got to say it's quite liberating that the national
coach can actually come out and express opinion that is
against essentially the process of netball New Zealand and you're
not hushed. People can speak freely about what they want.
I think that's really healthy for the sport at an
international level.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
Yeah, I really do. And you know, as you said,
people have voiced their opinion recently and that's really what
it's all about. It's our ability to voice things that
need to change or how can we do things differently
in our system. I don't think it's a negative as such,
and as I say, there has been discussions since Grace
Leaf last year, so it's not something that the board
(07:54):
don't know, but they've got to work carefully as to
what it looks like for the system everybody, the Silver
Firms but also Grace as well.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Is there a middle ground knowing that you can see
that might be looked at. So I know that the CEO,
Jimmy Wiley, is particularly keen to see it happen. It's
not a Cords it's the board's call. But is there
a middle ground where everyone would be happy that you
can see?
Speaker 6 (08:19):
Yeah, I always think that there is. I always feel
that there's got to be a give and take. But
I also feel we've got to be clear strategically, as
I say, from a commercial aspect, from a broadcasting because
you know, that's where the dosh comes in, you know,
so we've got to be really clear about that. And
you know, another thing that people need to know as
(08:39):
well as you know, secing is fantastic, like you know,
like I've been here myself through my time with Lightning
and also my association with Briany, who's you know, our
one of our supports staff with the Silver fun So
I know what it's like over here. It's tough, you know,
(09:00):
And that was one of the convens that Grace had said,
you know, like it's a full days work where it's
a different vironment to when we're at home. And even
though there's a myth about getting more money over there,
that's not the case. So you know, reality is different
sometimes too when people look at it, they think, oh, hey,
you actually might be better at home. So you know,
(09:22):
there's a lot of things to work through every year,
somebody has always been approached. Every year, the player has
always asked me, and every year we've always investigated. So
it's not new, but you know, these decisions and probably
waiting to see what happens with the sky as well.
Broadcasting will come into effect.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
There are so many movable parts of this. We'll get
a Jay and Z Premiership next. But you must be
happy with what you're seeing in Grace and in her
time with the Swiss, because we know she's coming up
against are not to belittle what's happening over here, but
a very stout defensive well right across their championship that
(10:04):
they know all about defense. This is quite a for Grace.
She appears to be rising to the occasion.
Speaker 6 (10:10):
She's thriving over here. We still a lot to learn,
still a lot to add to her game. She's in
the high forties or fifties and volume and as you say,
coming up against world class defenders. So you know she
can only get better. And that's probably the scary thing
for the opposition in other countries that she's just starting
(10:33):
her journey so to speak. But you know, on she
adds to probably adding a different flavor as well to
what they have, you know in Australia, the very high performance.
But she's got her own swagger in her own way,
so I know it's a reciprocal sort of relationship. But
I'm wrapped. I'm raped where she currently is and the
(10:54):
shifts I've seen in her game so.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Far right ain Zed Premiership. That's where the focus is
going to be this weekend. The primary with these three game,
the primary thought process is the new rules or laws
of w what do you want to call them? Around
how the game operates with this extra point shot? What
are you what are you expecting from this? Because this
is all new for the coaches and the players.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
Yeah, I'm the extra shot you know, or the what
you call it shooting from distance? Getting two points is
something that has been in SECN over here and also
Vitality Cup in England, and we do have an amended
sort of shorting game which is called fast five where
they had that same distance anyway with two points. So
(11:39):
it's not new, it's just new being brought into.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
A and Z.
Speaker 6 (11:43):
The thing that I absolutely love about this this change up,
I suppose in our game is in SEC and it's
a three meters from the post and in my mind
as shoot as you should be shooting three meters anyway,
but our competition is three point five, which is longer.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
And I think you must have seen something about that
that's well.
Speaker 6 (12:08):
In my mind, you should be shooting three three meters
like where SECN currently is, it's like nearly just past halfway,
and I think that's ridiculous. There's what shooters should be
shooting anyway. You shouldn't be getting two points. But where
we've taken it, which is three point five, which is
further out, I'll say, man, if a shooter can get
in that in that distance, man, I'll be happy to
(12:30):
give them three on that shot. So you know, it's
you've got to be strategic if you take that shot.
It's just not willy nilly. But what I've noticed is
that it's showcasing more of our prowees and more of
our shooters who are willing to go to the post.
But it's also opened up the circle as well, so
(12:52):
I think that's making our game look good. The opposite
of that, which people haven't really talked about, is the
defense end, which is terrible. So what usually happens in
SEC over here is that that they usually leave the
post open and go and stop the two pointer. So
it's an easy one point. So you know, defense of
(13:14):
attack wise, it looks great. Defense sucks like it's curable
for our game, so taking that extra out then it
still keeps what to call the purity of our defense structures,
not a lot.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Of gray area when you speak, Dame Nolen Totu for that,
I'm truly grateful when you look at your team though,
advancing through because you've got a plain new Constellation Cut
which you're defending, which is so good. Have you written
your team down or does it all start from go
at the start of the premiership like everybody's on notice
(13:47):
that I'm picking based on format? Is that how you running?
Speaker 6 (13:50):
Or yeah, very much so. I've just sent out a
blueprint so to speak, on what's required, what's expected, what
the approaches are going to be in regards to selections.
Just sent that out last week actually, so everybody knows
what we're looking for. This A and Z is going
to be massive like it is in previous years anyway.
(14:13):
But you know, this is our last year to consolidate
and as you mentioned, we did really well with Constellation
Cup and winning that last year, so we really need
to back that up. But next year we've got Commonwealth
Games in twenty twenty seven is the World's So this
is our last year to be able to consolidate and
we'll go into selections.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
In August and we're looking forward to whoever gets named
to wear the black dress and hopefully if things go well,
we're going to have a grace wiki in exactly that
dress and on that Dame Noling Ttuer as always, thank
you very much for your time and for being so
open with us.
Speaker 6 (14:51):
All awesome. Thanks for your call, DMO.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
We've got the breakdown on Sports Talk cool oh eight
hundred news Talk.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Said Damon Noling. That Toto a head coach of the fans.
Can you imagine Scott Robinson talking like that? Did you
imagine Ian Foster's talking like that? Could you imagine anyone
in any other setup being so free with their words
and saying exactly what they think and where they're going.
It is marvelous. Good on your knowles. Twenty two minutes
(15:24):
out to seven. Coming up next, we're talking Cricket modd Association.
Cricket Association Chair also head of in New Zealand Cricket
Players Association, Heath Mills joins us. Who trouble between Pakistan
and India and who's caught in the middle, well, not
in the middle, but slightly to one side. Oh yeah,
the cricketers. We'll talk about that next here on a
(15:44):
news talk's THEREB and it's eleven minutes done the Blues
through Massel and after six minutes scored the opening try.
Now twelve minutes in, it's blues. Five drawer metals. News
Talks EB.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Two two one hundred fast. My food ain't touched.
Speaker 4 (16:02):

Speaker 4 (16:06):
You say, where's the fun in there?
Speaker 7 (16:09):
Let's go put some.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Forget the riffs call you make the call on sports
Talk on your home of Sports News Talks B.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Sports Talk on News Talks E. B Well Cricket Association
chair and he's doing Cricket Players Association boss, mister Heath
that Mills to join us. Now, good evening, Heath, good
Darcy part of the Players Association. You run it. It's
the last thing you need to hear is the trouble
(16:50):
that's going on between India and Pakistan, specifically with the
with the p yourself. This is the scary times, aren't they?
Heath and welcome.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Yeah. Look, it's not good for anyone, you know, it's
no one likes to see what's happening, and then you're
in Pakistan at the moment, and of course for us
with our members plying their trade in both the Pakistan
Super League and the Indian Premier League, it's pretty unnerving.
So it's good to see and we've been doing our
best to stay in touch with our people over the
(17:22):
last week or so and in try and help the
way we can.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
What do you know meanything at all about what's going
on and what may happen because we know that PSL's
basically been moved, hasn't it to the United Arab Emirates?
They're out of Pakistan? Is that it?
Speaker 4 (17:36):
Yeah, that was good news overnight. We effectively heard that
that was happening last night New Zealand Time, so where
we're pleased to wake up this woman and that had
been confirmed. So the players have the whole whole situation
is very unsettling for the players. We know that they're
safe in the hotels, they've got excellent security around them.
(17:57):
We've worked a lot with our security expert, Rich Dickerson
and time that he's got men on the ground in Pakistan.
We know that the park is done to do a
great job there, so we know they've been safe in
the hotels and we know the same as for the
guys in India. However, with what's been happening and what's
on the TV screens, drones and effectively being shot down
(18:18):
and around the cities where the guys have been housed,
obviously they've been extremely anxious and worries as you can imagine,
but so too their friends and family back home. So
you know they've been wanting to get out for a
few days now, and you know, to hear that the
ps PSL was going to be moved late last night
(18:39):
to buy was great relief for the guys, so especially,
just been in communications with some of them over the
last hour or so and they're hopeful that they'll be
out sort of late earlier this evening Pakistan time, and
then to Dubai, which would be a great step.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Is there a thought maybe they want to actually come
home full stop or is it still very much on
we're part of the PSL, We're going to keep playing.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
Oh, look like the guys have wanted to most of
them have wanted to come home for the last four
or five days. But of course that's that can't can't
happen from here. It's a the Pakistan Super League as
a Pakistan government run essentially event in New Zealand Cricket
Australian Cricket to player associations, we don't have anything any
(19:21):
control over that. So unfortunately they've had to stay there.
Hasn't even been an ability to get out of Pakistan
for the last three or four days with the airspace
closing at time, so they've been stuck there. They've wanted
to come home for a little while, but to go
to Dubai's as a good start, so that getting out
of Pakistan and to Dubai later later on today their
(19:42):
time will be a good outcome you've.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Got And as you see, you've got no control over that.
But is there a thought that maybe from Dubai it
might be a case of exit stage left? Can you aid?
And that is that that likely? Heath or not?
Speaker 4 (19:55):
Oh? Look, look, some of the guys are pretty keen
to come home, that's for sure, completely a bit back
to New Zealand and back to their loved ones. So
once they get to Dubai there will be discussions. I'm
sure where some players we'll talk to their teams and
see if they can also get home to New Zealand.
But I think in the first instance, everyone's just delighted
to get to Dubai and then then take a breath
(20:17):
and reassess things all about the other.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Side of the border with the IPL, because the paint
is Indian Pakistan, but maybe India with a stronger arm.
But the issues there closer to the border. Have been
in touch with anyone who might be in and around
that vicinity.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
Yeah, we've been in regular communication with it, with our
members in both countries and had various teams calls and
had our security guy talked for everyone frequently, so they've
been a regular concert. The guys are safe, feel very
safe in the hotels and the cities where they are
at the moment, but equally some are pretty keen to
(20:53):
come home as well. But as I sort of said earlier,
that's a decision in this case for the Indian government
in the Indian Cricket Board, that's who the guys are
applying their trade with them, are working for you, and
it doesn't look like the IPL is going to be moved.
When you think like that Orthough, who knows that decision
might be made in the next day or so. One
(21:15):
thing I would say is certainly in Pakistan, I was
on calls yesterday with some of the senior ministers that
they were on the call briefing the guys and that
they are very comfortable about the safety of our people
over there. They don't think they're at risk. Most of
this conflict is occurring in the northern region, but they
(21:36):
understand that nonetheless because of what's going on everyone that
it's a health and well being concerned for all the players.
So that's the key reason why they've made the decision
to move the PSL. And we hope at some point
maybe the Indians might see it the same way, that
it's not doing anyone any good to be constantly on
each about what's happening around them. So it would be
(21:57):
nice to see the Indians move the IPL, but if
that's a decision for them, so we have to just
wait and see.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
New center and credit players say Boss Heath Mills to
join us. Who's paying for REGs Dickison And plainly he's
not free. He's very good at what he does. He's
been around for a long long time, but is it's
player association money. He's like cricketer climbing into this. Where
does that come from?
Speaker 4 (22:23):
So we've had a long standing relationship with reach with
a New Zealand Cricket Players Association obviously for many many years,
going back about twenty four years since our incidents. Some
people may remember back then that the New Zealand team
was caught up in the World Crickets Association has a
contract with Redge actually has done for a long period
of time and we can access his support through them,
(22:45):
which we do. He's renowned, no one is an expert
in this business for us. He also has people on
the ground in the PSL. He has a contract with
the PSL to a number of the teams to have
security managers with the team. So he has a really
good relationship with the various government authorities cricket monstrators in Pakistan.
(23:10):
So we soon learn what's going on and we give
a view from him as to the capability around the
team and how good the security blanket is. He's been
an excellent eesset for us for a long period of time.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
It's more than a blow to the Pakistan leagues. This
is huge. What does this say about the future of
this competition. I'd suggest after this there'll be a lot
of players going I'm not really sure I want to
go there. It's not the end or is it close?
What is this doing?
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Oh, look, that's a fair question. I want't overreact to it, though.
I think what we've learned after having our people in
that part of the world over many many years, We've
dealt with a number of incidence over time, and the
situation can change quite quickly. At the moment, clearly it's
not a place where our people want to be and
(24:07):
they want to get home, and I think most Kiwis
will understand that. But you know, we all like to
think and I'm sure everyone hopes that the situation and
in there in Pakistan resolves itself pretty shortly and things
can get back to normal. So you wouldn't wouldn't rule
anything out for the future. Yeah, hopefully the situation, the conflict,
they escalates soon and we can get back to the
(24:30):
normality and including with cricket in the future.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Yeah, And like always when you're touring that part of
the world, the due diligence is huge. Before we've seen
any athletes into that area. What about Pakistan the India
and their cricketing relationship doesn't look entirely good for that either,
doesn't he.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
Yeah, Look, I think it's important to understand when the
players are with the New Zealand team or a New
Zealand team going to anywhere in the world, the New
Zealand cricket is responsible for their safety and we obviously
take a keen interest in making sure the right standards
are in place. But in these situations, the players are
independent contractors and they choose to go and play in
(25:11):
various leagues and they're really doing it under their own steam.
To a certain extent, we can only support them when
issues like this emerge. So but in terms of India
and Pakistan, this conflict has been going on for many,
many years. I'm certainly not going to be able to
solve that. He with you now, Darcy. It's not great
for cricket, but it's it's not great for people. It's
(25:34):
not great for the people of India, it's not great
for the people of Pakistan. It's not great for the
world in many respects to see this conflict beings. So
of course it's going to it continues to impact cricket
where India don't play Pakistan outside of ICC events and
you know who knows that that even might be questions
question in the short term at the moment, So yeah,
(25:54):
it's not not a good situation for anyone, and no
one loves to see what's going on and obviously clearly
impacts cricket like it does everything else in life.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
You hear it from the biggest names and sports and
many of your sale always eighty Sports Talk more on
your home of Sports News Talks ivy.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
Twenty five minutes to eight. It was heat that Mills
Will Cricket Association chair and his in Cricket Players Association
boss are looking at what's happening in the IPL more
distinct the the ps L, so it looks like players
will be out of there to Dubai and what are
we looking at Pakistana roughly five six hours behind us,
(26:34):
so that should be happening overnight New Zealing time, which
I'm huge relief to the families of the players that
are over there playing in the ps So he thanks
very much for your time. Fijian Drewer and the Blues
Blues have scored again through Fanaki Barrett has converted that

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Butt's gone. He's still twelve at Neil Blues over and drawer.
Fen Barrack converted that for Knacky triumph twenty away from
my eight. Let's sink our tea thin to the nr L.
Plainly the wires are looking for four on the bounce
and they take on George Dragons that's coming up tomorrow evening.
(28:16):
It's a pretty crazy game. On last night, and there
are some other interesting fixtures on the horizon. And we're
joined now by NRL senior journalist. His name is Brad
Walter and he's with us now.
Speaker 7 (28:30):
Good evening, Brad, Good evening, Garcie, how are.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
You very well? Washed? A cracking old game last night
of the NRL like it had its slow parts, but
at the end was a barn burner and it was
two pretty average teams. Wasn't it that he was taking
on the Dolphins? Well?
Speaker 7 (28:46):
Mate, what a finish? Hey?
Speaker 9 (28:48):
And yeah hamisode wo il Fido and Josh had Oca.
I don't think Well, there's always been debate about who
the fastest player in the NRL is, but I'm giving
it a hammer now after what we saw last night.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Stunner. And this is the problem with the NRL, Dan Garda.
I watch a team and ites our watch fifteen minutes
and suddenly, you know till else I've gone. I've watched
the whole match because it's such a good watch. Look
this weekend, aside, the Warriors are looking to go four
on the bounce. Talking about that first, what about the
other key games? What do you look toward.
Speaker 9 (29:24):
Well, mate, the rabbit Os versus Broncos. Is a is
a real interesting game. You know, the two teams that
two teams that lost last weekend, but you sort of
feel with you don't know what you're going to get
with either of them, and both of them are capable
of probably a beating just about any team on their day.
Speaker 7 (29:44):
Latrell Mitchell back for the for the rabbit Os.
Speaker 9 (29:47):
So the Broncos, Yeah, like they've put in some great
performances this year and they've put in some poor performances
and they've done it in the one game as well.
So I'll be still looking for the Broncos to bounce back.
But I'm also thinking, you know, the Rabbits, they started
the season quite well with a lot of injuries and
they still have got a high injury told but just
(30:08):
the return of Latrell and also young Jamie Humphries are
half back, could get them back on track. So that's
an interesting game. But the game of the round is
undoubtedly the Raiders and the Bulldogs down in Canberra. They're
one and two, Bulldogs first, Raider second. Hasn't happened since
nineteen ninety four that those two clubs were in that
(30:30):
position at any stage of a season. Since so thirty
one years ago I think, and they played in the
Grand Final that year, So this could be a precursor
to a Bulldogs Raiders Grand Final that which is a
grand If it is the case, it's a grand final
we weren't expecting.
Speaker 7 (30:51):
At the start of the season.
Speaker 9 (30:52):
And the fact that these two teams are top of
the table, I think anybody was expecting that that would
be the case as well.
Speaker 7 (30:59):
But it's sold out down in Canberra. Raiders have been
in terrific form.
Speaker 9 (31:03):
They knocked over the Storm last week and the books
have discontinued to build on what they did last year.
Speaker 7 (31:09):
So yeah, I think that for me, that is the
match of the round. Really looking forward to that game.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
The Bulldogs took on the Broncos and fell apart. What
did the Raiders learn from that because that was out
of nowhere. You're a couple of percent off and you
can get run down. I think a lot of people
were shocked by that result, probably more of the Broncos
than anyone.
Speaker 9 (31:28):
Yeah, absolutely, and well I think the Broncos showed what
they're capable of in that game, and yeah, the Bulldogs
were a bit off. The Bulldog The Bulldogs have been
hit hard by suspensions. They had a buy last weekend.
They're coming off a buyer so they're fresh, but they
have been hit out by some suspensions, so they're not
going to be at full strength and it's a real
good opportunity for the Raiders to knock them off and maybe,
(31:51):
you know, I suppose you know, maybe the whorls will
come off or if that's the case for the Bulldogs,
but they're really well coached team. I said that it's
a strong team across the park. Matt Burton's back from suspension.
Any team that any team's got Stephen Crichton in it
is always going to be a threat. So yeah, I
(32:13):
think I don't know, it's just a fascinating game. Because
I said, I don't think anybody thought, well, I think
last year the Bulldogs they made the eighth. It was
their best season for probably nearly a decade, and I
think we all thought, Okay, they're probably going to improve
a little bit on last year. But the Raiders, they've
just come out of nowhere and they've got a lot
(32:36):
of young kids in that back line, a lot of
speed that seems to be the key, and they've got
just a hard working forward pack that's really prepared to
get in and you know, go head to head with
every forward pack that they play, and they seem to
really thrive on the sort of the physicality and the
aggression and the confrontation.
Speaker 7 (32:57):
As well.
Speaker 9 (32:58):
Led by Joe Tapenhay and Corey horse Berg is out,
but they've got a couple of English players. Mattie Nichols,
he was an unknown. He's come over. He's proved to
be a sensation. So yeah, so they're a really exciting team.
Has had a young backline with lots of speed, Exavier Savage,
Ko Weeks, Ethan Strange. Really yeah, just good to watch.
(33:22):
And I said, a big crowd, full house down in
canber it's going to be game worth watching. That's the
Saturday afternoon match.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Yeah, Nights Feed Titans thirteen sixteenth, that's starting shortly. I
have little or no interest in that one. I think
the Cowboys Panthers. The Cowboys will be locking their wounds.
The Panthers are actually looking up. Finally, you've got Storm
taking on West Tiger's that's fourth B eighth. That could
be interested. And then Sharks and Seagulls seventh v. Six.
(33:49):
I like that on Sunday, but Before all of that,
the game that New Zealand fans are concentrating on Warriors
sitting in third place, looking to chuck out four consecutive
consecutive victories up against the Dragons. Not an easy task
and wolln gong. But this team shown the Warriors that
they can actually pluck these things out, can they.
Speaker 9 (34:12):
Well, that's one thing they've shown this year, isn't that
they know how to win. They win in the close games.
They're winning games that they would have lost in the past.
And what a difference it makes on the table when
you can you know, you can, you can win a
golden point game by kicking a fifty penalty goal, or
you can hang in the way they did last week.
(34:33):
You know, they came out of the box against the Cowboys.
I think they were leading thirty to twelve, and then
the Cowboys came back at them, and you know, and
it was thirty to twenty four, and they just hung
in there.
Speaker 7 (34:46):
They would looked like they were going and out on
their feet, and the Cowboys really sense that.
Speaker 9 (34:50):
And they had some injuries out wide, which is really
I think the Cowboys targeted that. They lost rock o'berry
and they had to move Kirk Capele out of the centers,
but Ed Cossi was out on the wing and he
had a busted shoulder, so they were really really struggling
on the end. Deser And I said, the Cowboys took
advantage that they scored three tries in eight minutes in
(35:11):
the second midway through the second half to bring it
back to thirty twenty four. And you thought the here
the Cowboys are going to roll over the top of
the Warriors, because they just looked like they were gone.
But they managed to like just dig in, hang in there,
showed some real defensive resolve and desperation when they needed
to because obviously the two points was at stake in
(35:33):
the game that they thought they were going to win.
They set young Sam Healy came on, made his debut,
but I think he played the last fourteen minutes just
basically came on to bring in a bit of energy.
He's a half back turned hooker, but he was playing
lock in the middle of the field and yeah, like
and I think he made twelve tackles in fourteen minutes
(35:53):
out there, but he also nearly scored a try. I
thought I was never seen him play before. I thought
he was really Yeah, like he thought he added some
spark and probably built the energy at the right time.
I thought it was a great move by Andrews that
bring him on when he did, because he said he
was called in late to make his debuts, sat on
the bench for sixty six minutes, so he actually wondered
(36:14):
whether he was going to get on it all and
then you know, came on playing out of position, but
just brought a bit of energy that may have been
enough to like just get you know, turn things around
and help them hang in there and get their win.
So those are really gutsy win the in fact, just
they've won games in different different different ways. You know,
they won comfortably against Newcastle down in down in christ Church,
(36:37):
so yeah, each of their wins has been different. But
they've managed to find a way to win all of
those games and that's what's been really impressive. And they're
not at full strength. They haven't been at full strength,
you know, probably in most of those games. Have had
some injuries, especially in their outside back, so you know
that's you know that that also shows the I suppose
(36:58):
the depth of the squad and the quality of some
of the younger players.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Or to do Vasishik and the reserves and of course
in the comeback Dan's Lishniek. What a headache for Webster,
What a good headache to have. And on that one,
Brad Walter, we think a for your time and your expertise.
Have a cracking weekend, my friend.
Speaker 7 (37:15):
Same to you, Darcy, looking forward to the footy.
